Florida Shooting

Motive for Florida family’s massacre may never be known By Terry Spencer and Freida Frisaro Associated Press

Investigators say that when they captured Marine veteran Bryan Riley outside the Lakeland, Florida, home where he allegedly killed a couple, their 3-monthold son and the boy’s grandmother, he told them, “You know why I did this.” But they say they don’t and, in fact, may never know why Riley launched an attack against a family he had no known connection with, except that he may have been mentally ill. Riley’s girlfriend told investigators that he had been saying he could communicate directly with God. “The big question that all of us has is, ‘Why?’” local prosecutor Brian Haas said after Sunday’s slayings. “We will not know today or maybe ever.” Riley, 33, is being held without bond after Sunday’s massacre on four counts of first-degree murder. During his first court appearance Monday, he said he intended to hire a lawyer but a public defender was appointed to represent him until he does. Riley, who served as a sharpshooter in Iraq and Afghanistan, surrendered Sunday morning after a furious gun battle with authorities. After it was over, a deputy rushed into the home and rescued an 11-year-old girl, who was still conscious despite being shot seven times. She was in stable condition on Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office said. According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, Riley told interrogators that the victims “begged for their lives, and I killed them anyway.” “He is evil in the flesh,” Judd said. “Just because you have mental health issues,

does not mean you are not criminally liable.” Judd identified Justice Gleason, 40, as one of the victims. Citing a state privacy law, Judd only identified the other victims as a 33-year-old woman, her infant son and the boy’s 62-year-old grandmother. Facebook posts and public records show Gleason was in a relationship with Theresa Lanham and they had a baby boy, Jody, in May. Lanham’s mother, Catherine Delgado, owned the property and lived there. Gleason also had an 11-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. According to Judd and court records, on Saturday evening, about nine hours before the attack, Riley stopped his truck and confronted Gleason as he mowed his lawn. Riley, who lives 30 miles away in Tampa (50 kilometers), told Gleason that God had sent him to prevent a suicide by someone named Amber. Gleason and one of the other victims told Riley no one by that name lived there and asked him to leave. They called 911, but when authorities arrived, Riley was gone. A deputy searched the area, but didn’t find Riley. Judd said given the circumstances, there wasn’t much more that could be done. “We get thousands of reports of suspicious people,” Judd said. “To suggest that we’ve got time to stop and do an investigation of every suspicious vehicle is not possible. He made zero threats. He was just a guy that was saying some really goofy stuff.” Riley returned around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, arranging glowsticks to create a path leading to the house in what Judd said may have been an attempt to draw officers “into

an ambush.” Shooting soon began — and when a deputy in the area heard popping noises, he sounded the alarm, bringing state and local law enforcement officers to the scene. When they arrived, they found an apparently unarmed Riley outside, dressed in camouflage, and his truck ablaze. But Riley ran back into the house, where authorities heard more gunfire, “a woman scream and a baby whimper,” Judd said. Officers tried to enter the house, but the front door was barricaded. Judd said when they went to the back, they saw Riley, who appeared to have donned full body armor. Riley and the officers exchanged heavy gunfire, with dozens “if not hundreds of rounds” fired, before Riley retreated back into the home, Judd said. Everything fell silent, until a helicopter unit noticed that Riley was coming out, the sheriff said. He had been shot once and was ready to surrender. Officers heard cries for help inside but were unsure whether there were additional shooters and feared the home was booby-trapped. Still, one officer rushed in and grabbed the wounded girl, who told authorities there were three dead people inside. The sheriff’s office said they all had been huddling in fear, with the boy dying in his mother’s arms. Even the family dog was shot dead. “I will never be able to unsee that mother with that deceased infant in her arms,” Judd said. “It is a horror of the utmost magnitude.” Family friend Pansy Mincey Smith told The Ledger she last saw Gleason at the hospital shortly after his son was born. “You were smiling from ear to ear about your new little baby boy, you had that big teddy bear for him. This is so heartbreaking,” Smith wrote on Facebook. Authorities said Riley’s girlfriend told investigators he was never violent but had become increasingly erratic. She said he claimed to be on mission from God, stockpiling supplies for Hurricane Ida victims including $1,000 worth of cigars. Riley’s vehicle had also been stocked with bleeding control kits and other supplies for a gunfight, authorities said. He worked as a private security guard and had no criminal history, the sheriff said. Officers took Riley to jail in a white jumpsuit later Sunday. He appeared downcast, hanging his head and hardly opening his eyes, as reporters asked why he killed the family. “This guy was a war hero. He fought for his country,” Judd said. Now, “he’s a cold-blooded killer.”

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) – As the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks approaches, Americans increasingly balk at intrusive government surveillance in the name of national security, and only about a third believe that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were worth fighting, according to a new poll. More Americans also regard the threat from domestic extremism as more worrisome than that of extremism abroad, the poll found. The poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that support for surveillance tools aimed at monitoring conversations taking place outside the country, once seen as vital in the fight against attacks, has dipped in the last decade. That’s even though international threats are again generating headlines following the chaotic end to the 20-year war in Afghanistan. In particular, 46% of Americans say they oppose the U.S. government responding to threats against the nation by reading emails sent between people outside of the U.S. without a warrant, as permitted under law for purposes of foreign intelligence collection. That’s compared to just 27% who are in favor. In an AP-NORC poll conducted one decade ago, more favored than opposed the practice, 47% to 30%. The new poll was conducted Aug. 12-16 as the Taliban were marching toward their rapid takeover of the country. Since then, Afghanistan’s Islamic State affiliate launched a suicide bombing that killed at least 169 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members, and experts have warned about the possibility of foreign militant groups rebuilding in strength with the U.S. presence gone. In a marked turnabout from the first years after Sept. 11, when Americans were more likely to tolerate the government’s monitoring of communications in the name of defending the homeland, the poll found bipartisan concerns about the scope of surveillance and the expansive intelligence collection tools that U.S. authorities have at their disposal. The expansion in government eavesdropping powers over the last 20 years has coincided with a similar growth in surveillance technology across all corners of American society, including traffic cameras, smart TVs and other devices that contribute to a near-universal sense of being watched. Gary Kieffer, a retired 80-year-old

New Yorker, said he is anxious about the government’s powers. “At what point does this work against the population in general rather than try to weed out potential saboteurs or whatever?” asked Kieffer, who is a registered Democrat. “At what point is it going to be a danger to the public rather saving them or keeping them more secure?” “I feel like you might need it to an extent,” Kieffer said. But he added: “Who’s going to decide just how far you go to keep the country safe?” Eric McWi l liams, a 59-year-old Democrat from Whitehall, Pennsylvania, said he saw surveillance as important to keeping Americans safe. “I wasn’t for the torture stuff, which is why they did it outside the country. I wasn’t for that,” McWilliams said, referring to the harsh interrogation techniques used by the CIA to question suspects. “But as far as the surveillance is concerned, you gotta watch them – or else we’re gonna die.” Americans are also more likely to oppose government eavesdropping on calls outside the U.S. without a warrant, 44% to 28%. Another 27% hold neither opinion. About two-thirds of Americans continue to be opposed to the possibility of warrantless U.S. government monitoring of telephone calls, emails and text messages made within the U.S. Though the National Security Agency is focused on surveillance abroad, it does have the ability to collect the communications of Americans as they’re in touch with someone outside the country who is a target of government surveillance. About half are opposed to government monitoring of internet searches, including those by U.S. citizens, without a warrant. About a quarter are in favor and 2 in 10 hold neither opinion. Roughly half supported the practice a decade ago. The ambivalence over government surveillance practices was laid bare last year when the Senate came one vote short of approving a proposal to prevent federal law enforcement from obtaining internet browsing information or search history without seeking a warrant. Also last year, Democrats pulled from the House floor legislation to extend certain surveillance authorities after then-President Donald Trump and Republicans turned against the measure and ensured its defeat. Despite general surveillance concerns, six in 10 Americans support the installation of surveillance cameras in public places to monitor potentially suspicious activity — although somewhat fewer support random searches like full-body scans for people

boarding commercial flights in the U.S. Just 15% support racial and ethnic profiling to decide who should get tougher screening at airports, where security was fortified following the Sept. 11 attacks. About 7 in 10 Black Americans and Asian Americans oppose racial profiling at airports, compared with about 6 in 10 white Americans. As the U.S. this summer was ending the two-decade war in Afghanistan, most Americans, about 6 in 10, say that conflict – along with the war in Iraq – was not worth fighting. Republicans are somewhat more likely to say the wars were worth fighting. When it comes to threats to the homeland, Americans are more concerned about U.S.-based extremists than they are international groups. FBI Director Chris Wray has said domestic terrorism, on display during the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, is “metastasizing” and that the number of arrests of racially motivated extremists has skyrocketed. According to the poll, about two-thirds of Americans say they are extremely or very concerned about the threat from extremist groups inside the U.S. By contrast, about one-half say they are extremely or very concerned about the threat from foreignbased militants. While Republicans and Democrats are generally aligned in their concerns about international extremism, the poll shows Democrats are more likely to be concerned than Republicans about the homegrown threat, 75% to 57%. On other top national security matters, about half of Republicans and Democrats are concerned by North Korea’s nuclear program, and about 7 in 10 say the same about the threat of cyberattacks. Majorities of Republicans and Democrats also believe that the spread of misinformation is an extremely or very concerning threat to the U.S, though Democrats are slightly more likely to say so. But there’s a much greater partisan divide on other issues. Democrats, for instance, are far more concerned than Republicans about climate change, 83% vs. 21%. But Republicans are much more strongly concerned about illegal immigration than Democrats, by a margin of 73% to 21%. The AP-NORC poll of 1,729 adults was conducted Aug. 12-16 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.

Essential Workers

4 vaccinated front-line workers cope with pandemic’s toll By Alexandra Olson and Mae Anderson Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — The early months of the coronavirus pandemic shined a spotlight on essential workers. As cities shutdown, thank you signs went up on windows and applause rang out each evening for the workers still out there. At the time, there was hope the pandemic would be short-lived. Instead, the virus spread, evolved and unleashed new challenges. More than 60% of U.S. workers had jobs that couldn’t be done from home during the pandemic, according to a Pew Research Center survey. Front-line workers struggled with inconsistent masking policies, fought for hazard pay and campaigned for lasting changes, including a $15 minimum wage and adequate paid sick leave. The arrival of vaccines has brought new trials. Labor advocates fought for paid time off and other policies to help give workers access to the vaccines, while confronting reluctance among many to get the shots. At this latest crossroads, The Associated Press caught up with four of the workers it profiled last year: a nurse’s assistant, a subway driver, a janitor and a warehouse worker. For all four, the biggest change was getting vaccinated. They have taken tentative steps toward normalcy, hugging family and traveling. But the pandemic continues to define their work and life.

THE JANITOR

Annette Brown’s boss called her into the office one day a few months ago. He read emails the medical staff had written, praising Brown’s dedication to her job as an overnight janitor at a hospital in Halethorpe, Maryland. The recognition was hard-won. In the early days of the pandemic, Brown wandered around the hospital in search of leftover N-95 masks because the nurses had priority amid a nationwide shortage. A member of the 32BJ SEIU service workers’ union, she pushed unsuccessfully for hazard pay. By her count, 11 other janitors at her hospital quit during the pandemic. A single mother of two, Brown couldn’t consider doing the same. For a year, she spent days guiding her children through remote school before collapsing for three hours of sleep before returning to her overnight shift.

This month, she was promoted to supervisor, earning her a $2 hourly raise that bumped her pay to $17.90 an hour. “They started showing a bit more respect to the housekeeping staff because they saw us in action and how important our job is,” she said. Last year, Brown told the AP what she wanted most was a vaccine. She got hers in February but her fears still linger, especially for her children who will start school in person in the fall. Her east Baltimore neighborhood has one of the city’s lowest vaccination rates, at less than 50%, according to Baltimore City health figures. Brown’s oldest son, 13, is eligible for the vaccine but told her he needs time to think about it. “I’m know for a fact that I’m not going to make him it get it if doesn’t want to,” Brown said. “But I feel like it’s best.”

THE SUBWAY DRIVER

Transit workers in New York City became eligible for the vaccine in January, but Desmond Hill did not get his until April. T he su b w ay c ondu c t or wor r ie d “because of how fast the vaccine was created as well as the politics that went into it.” His grandmother and father begged him to get it. He finally rolled up his sleeve at a station where the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York’s mass transit agency, was hosting a vaccination drive. “The change of heart came from realizing what kind of job I have and what it requires of me as far as being in contact with thousands of people a day,” Hill said. According to the MTA, at least 171 of its workers have died from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, the majority of them people of color. By May, just 40% of employees had been vaccinated. The state government finally required MTA workers to get the shots or face weekly testing by Labor Day. Nearly two-thirds of MTA employees have now been vaccinated. Employer support has made a big difference in getting workers vaccinated, according to a survey of almost 9,000 service and retail sector workers by Harvard’s Shift Project. For instance, the survey found that 68% of workers who — like Hill — were able to get the vaccine at jobsites were vaccinated. In contrast, less than 40% of workers who had no employee support were vaccinated. Hill says getting the vaccine has made a “night-and-day” difference.

“Last year, like everyone else, I was afraid of being outside and afraid of being around people, I took lunch breaks in my car,” Hill said. “Now I’m vaccinated and I feel more comfortable.” He celebrated with a trip to Las Vegas, and best of all, resumed weekly visits with his grandmother. “She’s sitting right beside me,” Hill said with a laugh. “We had lunch and went on a shopping run.”

THE WAREHOUSE WORKER

The pandemic pulled Courtenay Brown into activism. It started in March 2020 when she saw social media posts from fellow Amazon warehouse workers demanding more protection from the virus. Brown, who works at an Amazon Fresh fulfillment center in Newark, New Jersey, jumped in after someone dismissively wrote that Amazon workers should just be grateful for their jobs. Soon, she was recruited by the United For Respect labor advocacy group, and found herself talking to journalists and lawmakers. It was thrilling for Brown, an exuberant storyteller whose childhood included bouts of homelessness. During a news conference last fall, she made headlines when she threw out the phrase “turkey apocalypse” to describe fears that the holiday season would lead to a surge in infections. But the slow pace of progress was disheartening. Amazon, for instance, never reinstated the hazard pay that was the key demand of the “turkey apocalypse” news conference. “It’s one thing to be on the outside of the fight and suffering. It’s another thing to be in the fight. You get your hopes up,” Brown said. “Having no hope isn’t as bad as having hope and repeatedly having it crushed.” Brown, a Navy vet, got vaccinated as soon as possible at a VA hospital and tried to talk hesitant co-workers into getting the shots. Amazon has held more than 1,100 on-site vaccination clinics. It has also offered bonuses and even a lottery for a car and a $500,000 cash prize to encourage its workers to get vaccinated but so far has stopped short of requiring the shots. Still, the warehouse work itself has taken its toll on Brown, who developed tendonitis and plantar fasciitis over four years on the job. Amazon recently announced that it would ease up on, but

not eliminate, its “time off task” tool that dings workers for taking too many breaks, which labor safety advocates have blamed for the company’s injury rates. At this point, though, Brown yearns for a job that won’t punish her body. “This is the last physical job I’ll ever have,” Brown said.

THE HEALTH-CARE WORKER

Linda Silva hasn’t regained her sense of smell more than a year after contracting COVID-19 while working as a nurse’s assistant at two hospitals in New York. But she’s grateful be alive. A doctor reminded her, “A lot of people lost their lives, all you lost is your smell,’” she said. “Now, I’m moving forward.” A study by Kaiser Health News and the Guardian found that more than 3,600 U.S. health care workers died of COVID19 during the first year of the pandemic, two-thirds of them people of color. That study also found that nurses and support staff such as Silva were more likely to die than physicians. After hurting her arm in October, Silva switched jobs to become a contract administrator for her union, 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. She’s not alone: Hospitals across country have struggled to retain staff. Silva got vaccinated as soon as she could in January. At the time, hospitals, nursing homes and clinics ran into surprising resistance to the vaccine from workers, an ongoing challenge that has prompted a growing number of local governments to impose mandates. About a quarter of health care workers in New York remained unvaccinated when the state government imposed a mandate for them in mid-August. For Silva, the vaccination has brought joy. For weeks at the beginning of the pandemic, she avoided hugging her husband and two sons. Instead, they would put their arms around themselves each day and and say, “I love you.” By May, the rest of her family was vaccinated and celebrated with a trip to Kissimmee, Florida. “It was our first time going out and doing something — it felt great to be able to get out there,” she said. “I want to let people know it is very important to take the vaccine. We can get back to more normalcy.”

Rockford Rocked Interviews

Chatting with Dead Daisies Axeman Doug Aldrich ahead of Apollo show By Todd Houston Contributor

Todd Houston: Hey Doug how’s it going? Doug Aldrich: Hey Todd I’m doing great! TH: It looks like you guys (Dead Daisies) are going to be here in Belvidere at the Iconic Appolo Theater on September 10. How’s the tour going? DA: Yeah, we sure are. Actually, the Appolo show is the first date on the tour. We did about nine warm up gigs here in New York but yeah, we are very excited about Rockford. Great city, great people. We have about three or four Illinois shows. We always love it there and Rockford is famous for the Cheap Trick guys. TH: Who’s in the band? DA: We got Tommy Clufetos from Black Sabbath on drums of course, Glenn Hughes vocals and bass (former Deep Purple) and David Lowy on second guitar. We actually made the album in 2019 and sorta sat on it because of COVID but now we are finally starting to do some shows and we have a great bill. We have comedian Don Jamieson

from “That Metal Show” opening. It’s going to be great man and we can’t wait to get started. TH: Nice! What guitars are you bringing out on the road with you? DA: I have three guitars that I’m bringing with, two are Les Pauls and one is a Scallen guitar which is very similar to a Les Paul in terms of feel and everything. My main guitar is a Goldtop that I got in 2008 which was a backup to my original Goldtop that I used with Whitesnake and DIO. Sadly, my original had the headstock snapped off. I got it fixed but really didn’t want to take it on the road anymore. The one I’m using now has this big, throaty sound which is great. TH: So, you’ve played with David Coverdale obviously in Whitesnake but David was also in Deep Purple. Now you’re in a band with Glenn Hughes who was in Deep Purple as well playing bass and doing a lot of the lead vocals. Is it ever strange to you to look over across the stage or whatever and see Glenn Hughes, someone you

grew up listening to wailing away? DA: Well, the thing is I’ve known Glenn for a long time and we have been friends forever so when I look over at him, I see a friend. I have been very lucky to have worked with some great singers and people in general. I’ve worked with Kelly Hansen from foreigner, James Christian, etc. I took a bit of time off and then I got the call to work with Ronnie (Dio) and he just blew me away. Then of course David Coverdale, John Corabi and now Glenn. Glenn is an unbelievably talented man. He’s a very sweet, kind soul and he just kicks ass. His singing is as ferocious as his bass playing. TH: In the past when you were with Whitesnake and Dio, I noticed that you really try to stay true to the arrangement and guitar solos that you are covering. DA: When I joined Dio I asked Ronnie how I should play the solos that Vivian Campbell or Craig Goldy wrote and he told me just stick to the parts that you think are important. I figured a solo is written a certain way and I should respect that. I

can’t play exactly like anybody but with Vivian Campbell we are huge Gary Moore fans so I get what he is doing. When I see guys play my solos I like when they stick to the solos that I actually recorded. TH: Getting back to comedian Don Jamieson, I love how quick witted that guy is and his overall routine. I’ve been watching a lot of his stand-up stuff on YouTube lately. DA: Yeah, Don is great. With this bill you get to go out and see a band play and you’re also getting lots of laughs. The thing with Don is that he’s going to be joking on us too! That’s part of his thing man. He’ll come up to me after the show and say “Did you hear what I said about you tonight?” And I’ll be yeah, I was standing right there on the side of the stage you jerk! (Laughter) TH: I won’t keep you too long Doug. I’m sure I’ll be looming around September 10th so maybe I’ll you there and say hello. DA: For sure Todd! I am very excited to kick this thing off. It’s going to be like no other man! TH: Thanks for chatting brother!

Harvesting fruit trees BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

At the University of Illinois ExtensionWinnebago County oce, we have two peach trees, ‘Reliance’ and ‘Contender’ which were planted about 10 years ago. Peach yields can be ‘hit or miss’ as these trees cannot withstand temperatures that reach -8° F for consecutive days. When that happens in our region, I expect to not have peaches that year. Luckily, we were able to harvest from both these trees this year. Peaches should be harvested when the fruit has no green color on the outside.

If the peach is still green, you’ll find that when you cut into it, it will still be immature. The peach should have a bit of firmness but not too much. The peach should almost feel like a softball. We are just now harvesting our peaches so yours should be either now or soon. Apples have just started to be harvested. Usually, you will harvest apples based on their seasonality. If this is one of the first years of your apple tree harvests, you will want to look at some guides. For instance, Zestar is an early season apple that is usually harvested mid-August. Granny Smith may not be ready until the end of October.

One way that I look to see if my apples are ready are to see what the orchards around me are picking and/or their harvest calendars. This can give me a greater estimate of when my apples might be ready. If I am growing a variety not listed, you could see if there are varieties similar and estimate that way. There are numerous Extension guides that go into detail of when to harvest certain apple varieties. Color could be used to indicate apple maturity. The skin color can at times be a good indicator of when the apple is ready. Of course, if your apple is a mixture of red and yellow and not one color solely, it may

be hard to determine the readiness. The ground color is where the skin of the stem is. When the apple matures, this color will go from green to a yellow. Yet again, this will be based on variety. Orchards will commonly do a starch test. This is done by cutting the apple and dipping it into an iodine solution. An apple that is strongly purple is considered immature while mature apples that are ready will have a subtle blue-purple color on the edges. You can do this on your home orchard. ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Recycling is not enough BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL

ILLINOIS RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTORS

During the depression of the 1930s recycling was a way of life. Within families clothing was handed down from older children to younger ones. As it wore out it was braided into rugs for household use. Governments provided jobs, conservation projects and relief. During WW II, recycling eorts intensified and women entered the workforce. Fat from cooking was poured into empty tin cans, string was saved and rolled into balls for later use. Metal cans, glass bottles and even toothpaste tubes were recycled. Tires were recapped to prolong their life. Used motor oil was collected and recycled. The reforms were taken seriously and citizens did their jobs. With the end of the war, the recycling eort dwindled and the economy focused on what became the throwaway society with formerly useful materials buried in landfills. Not everyone was ready to abandon such frugal habits. But frugality slowly withered under the incessant gospel of consumption and economic eciency. Why put time and money into recycling or repairing an item when it could be quickly replaced with an appealing new one with new features? Many items were made to fail quickly requiring their replacement and growing the economy. That business model persists today and wastes proliferate.

As litter grew across the landscape people organized against it. An early eort to place an economic incentive for recycling bottles in Michigan was abandoned by the legislature when industry oered to build a new bottling plant in the state if the incentive was dropped. Legislatures preferred economic growth and jobs to environmental concerns. Years later the state did pass a bottle bill. Eorts to pass similar legislation in Illinois continue to face resistance although electronic recycling events do occur. Industries funded early recycling eorts as a way to protect their profits and avoid taking financial responsibility for the wastes and pollution resulting from increasing levels of consumption. According to an article by Laura Sullivan the industry knew that recycling plastics was not a good solution to the problem but funded eorts to popularize it and pass their responsibility on to the public. Widely known now are the massive amounts of plastic wastes swirling around the ocean. Newly recognized are the microplastics found in food chains impacting numerous life forms including humans. In an economy focused on economic growth, profits and jobs, environmental and health impacts from the activities are overlooked and considered external to many economic transactions. We know that plastics in their varied forms have injured or killed a variety of wildlife. Not fully understood are the potential adverse impacts of microplastics on human health.

Recently Chicago Craine’s ran a series of articles on microplastics in the Great Lakes. Since microplastics are known to be released from washing polystyrene based clothing and passed through sewage treatment plants, its distribution is widespread in our waterways, drinking water and foods. We are left to wonder what levels of microplastics are in the Rock River and other streams and lakes in this region and what their impacts are. The oil and gas industry is looking toward an expansion of plastics manufacturing to increase the consumption of fossil fuels being lost to the emerging electric transportation fleet. While plastics have proven benefits there is growing resistance to their adverse impacts. The concerns add to the calls for a dramatic reduction in fossil fuel consumption while developing a more environmentally sustainable economic system. The plastics issue adds to the impossibility of infinite growth on a finite planet. And in turn that contradiction leads to the questions of if, when and how society resolves it or suers from ignoring it. Part of the answer involves in simplifying our lives and reducing consumption, but industry and commerce must incorporate environmental concerns into their business models to become sustainable and responsible. A far more aggressive model similar to earlier conservation and environmental restoration eorts appears essential to sustaining a healthy planet for its life forms, including humans.
