Whitney Martin returning to local news Staff Report

ROCKFORD - Veteran TV journalist Whitney Martin is returning to Rockford. Martin, who moved to Milwaukee in 2017 and anchored “CBS 58 Morning News,” will serve as assistant news director and anchor of “Eyewitness News in the Morning,” which airs weekdays from 5 to 7 a.m. on WTVO 17, and 7 to 9 a.m. on FOX 39. Before moving to Milwaukee, Martin worked at WIFR Channel 23 for 10 years.

“I’m beyond thrilled to return to the anchor desk in my hometown,” Martin said. “As a new mom, I understand the fast pace of mornings and know how valuable your time is. I’m honored to become a part of your morning routine and hope you’ll join me as we prepare for the day together.” Martin’s first day on the air will be Monday, Nov. 4. “Our newsroom is deeply rooted in this community, with many longtime familiar

faces,” WQRF-TV FOX 39 Vice President and General Manager Kelly Lattimer said. “Combining Whitney’s journalistic experience in the morning with that of our evening team of Eric Wilson, Mimi Murphy, Candice King, and Scott Leber makes Eyewitness News the most recognizable news team in the Stateline, and fits perfectly with our philosophy that nobody can cover the Stateline better than those who call it home.”

Democrats weigh formal vote as probe quickens BY LISA MASCARO, MARY CLARE JALONICK AND LAURIE KELLMAN ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Democrats are gauging support for a vote to formally authorize the impeachment inquiry as another ocial testified Tuesday in the deepening probe of President Donald Trump’s eorts to have Ukraine investigate Joe Biden. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to meet privately with Democratic lawmakers later Tuesday to survey attitudes about a possible vote, according to people granted anonymity to discuss the planning. She told reporters she’d have more to say “later,” after the evening meeting with House colleagues. Trump, who calls the impeachment inquiry an “illegitimate process,” has pressured Pelosi to take a formal vote. Republicans want to test politically vulnerable Democrats with a roll call that could be dicult in areas where Trump remains popular. But Pelosi has so far resisted, saying Congress is well within its power to conduct oversight of the executive branch as part of the Constitution’s system of checks and balances, and no vote is needed. Senate Majorit y Leader M itch McConnell opened the chamber on Tuesday suggesting Democrats were trying to “cancel out” Trump’s election with the march toward impeachment. The inquiry is moving quickly as a steady stream of ocials, largely from the State Department, are appearing behind closed doors this week, some providing vivid details about the events surrounding the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in which Trump urged Zelenskiy to investigate a firm tied to political rival Joe Biden’s family and Ukraine’s own involvement in the 2016 presidential election. In 10 hours of testimony Monday, a former White House aide, Fiona Hill, recounted that national security adviser John Bolton was so alarmed by Rudy Giuliani’s back-channel activities in Ukraine that he described Trump’s personal lawyer as a “hand grenade who is going to blow everybody up.” The former White House aide detailed Bolton’s concerns to lawmakers and told them that she had at least two meetings with National Security Council lawyer John Eisenberg about the matter at Bolton’s request, according to a person familiar with the testimony who requested anonymity to discuss the confidential interview. Hill, a top adviser on Russia, also discussed U.S. ambassador Gordon Sondland and acting White House chief of sta Mick Mulvaney, the person said,

telling the three committees leading the investigation that Bolton also told her he was not part of “whatever drug deal Sondland and Mulvaney are cooking up,” an apparent reference to talks over Ukraine. Giuliani was heavily involved in the eort to pressure Ukraine on the investigations. He said Tuesday he was “very disappointed” in Bolton’s comment. Bolton, Giuliani said, “has been called much worse.” Giuliani also acknowledged he had received payments totaling $500,000 related to the work for a company operated by Lev Parnas who, along with associate Igor Fruman, played a key role in Giuliani’s eorts to launch a Ukrainian corruption investigation against Biden and his son, Hunter. The two men were arrested last week on campaign finance charges as they tried to board an international flight. Giuliani’s attorney, Jon Sale, has notified lawmakers that Giuliani will not comply with a subpoena issued to appear before House investigators in the impeachment inquiry. Democrats set a Wednesday deadline for Giuliani to provide documents and it is unclear how they will respond to his refusal to comply. On Tuesday, House investigators heard from Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent, who was concerned about the “fake news smear” against the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, whom Trump recalled in May, according to emails obtained by The Associated Press. T he inter v iews, l i ke t he ot hers conducted by House impeachment investigators, took place behind closed doors. Republican lawmakers have aimed their ire at the process, saying witnesses should be interviewed out in the open. Hill also told the investigators that she had strongly and repeatedly objected to Yovanovitch’s ouster, according to the person familiar with the testimony. Yovanovitch testified to the impeachment investigators Friday that Trump pressured the State Department to fire her. Hill quoted Bolton, whom Trump forced out last month, as saying in one conversation that Giuliani was “a hand grenade who’s going to blow everybody up.” A whistleblower complaint about that call, later made public, prompted Pelosi to launch the impeachment inquiry. Five more ocials are scheduled this week, mostly from the State Department, though it is unclear if they will all appear after Trump declared he wouldn’t cooperate with the probe. Sondland is expected to appear for a deposition under subpoena Thursday and will certainly be asked about those talks.

Sondland, who is the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, is expected to tell Congress that a text message released earlier this month reassuring another envoy that there was no quid pro quo in their interactions with Ukraine was based solely on what Trump told him, according to a person familiar with his coming testimony. The cache of text messages was provided by one of the inquiry’s first witnesses, former Ukrainian envoy Kurt Volker, and detailed attempts by the diplomats to serve as intermediaries around the time Trump urged Zelenskiy to start the investigations into a company linked to Biden’s son. Michael McKinley, a former top aide to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who resigned last week, is scheduled to testify Wednesday. McKinley, a career foreign service ocer and Pompeo’s de facto chief of sta, resigned Friday, ending a 37-year career. In the emails from March, Kent shares with other State Department ocials a “daily update of the fake news driven smear out of Ukraine.” The emails include news reports and other commentary, some from U.S. journalists, that “goes after Masha,” as Yovanovitch was known. While interviews have focused on the interactions with Ukraine, the probe could broaden as soon as next week to include interviews with White House budget ocials who may be able to shed light on whether military aid was withheld from Ukraine as Trump and Giuliani pushed for the investigations. The three committees leading the probe are seeking interviews next week with Russell Vought, acting director of the Oce of Management and Budget, and Michael Duey, another OMB ocial who leads national security programs, according to a person familiar with those requests. That person wasn’t authorized to discuss the invitations and requested anonymity. Once Democrats have completed the probe and followed any other threads it produces, they will use their findings to help determine whether to vote on articles of impeachment. Because of the Trump administration’s edict, the Democrats have been subpoenaing witnesses as they arrived for their interviews – a move sometimes known as a “friendly” subpoena that could give the witnesses additional legal protection as they testify. Top Democrats say testimony and evidence coming in from other witnesses, and even the Republican president himself, are backing up the whistleblower’s account of Trump’s July 25 phone with Zelenskiy.

Turkey

Trump’s sanctions won’t bite a vulnerable Turkish economy By David McHugh Associated Press

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) – The sanctions the U.S. announced against Turkey this week over its offensive in Syria fall well short of doing serious damage to an economy still healing from a recession and currency collapse. President Donald Trump could take far tougher action that would deter foreign investment and credit that Turkey badly needs. But doing so could backfire in a number of ways, and it’s not clear he really wants to. Trump has said he could “destroy and obliterate” the economy of Turkey and called on the country to rein in its Syria offensive. His warning came after both Democrats and Republicans questioned Trump’s decision to give Turkey a green light for a military incursion against Kurdish fighters who were U.S. allies in Syria. However, the U.S. sanctions announced Monday did not match the rhetoric; analysts and financial investors saw them as minimal. The measures were limited to the Turkish defense and energy ministries and three Turkish officials, the ministers of defense, energy and interior security. They block transactions involving any assets they may have in the U.S. financial system and bar U.S. residents and businesses from dealing with them. The U.S. also raised tariffs on Turkish steel exports from 25% back to 50%, where they were in May, and suspended talks over a U.S.-Turkey trade deal. Given the dominant role that U.S. financial institutions and the dollar play in world commerce, such measures fall far short of what the U.S. could do by targeting Turkey’s banks and their links to the global financial system. Turkey’s currency and stock market both rose Tuesday as investors breathed a sigh of relief that harsher

measures were not imposed. Timothy Ash, emerging market strategist at Bluebay Asset Management, called the sanctions “minimal” and “window dressing,” noting that the trade deal was years off in any case. The muted initial response from investors “flies in the face of President Trump’s threat,” said Jason Tuvey, senior emerging markets economist at Capital Economics in London. One risk from the current sanctions, Tuvey said, is that they may be a prelude to tougher ones, given support in Congress for action against Turkey. And even though the direct impact on the economy may remain slight, the bigger risk could be on investor and financial market confidence in the country. The imposition of sanctions has re-started talk of Turkey possibly putting limits on the flow of money to prevent it from being taken out of the country. That could support the country’s currency but deter foreign investors. “If Turkish financial markets do come under fresh downward pressure, the resulting tightening of financial conditions will stifle the recovery from last year’s recession. The impact would probably be a lot more severe if sanctions are expanded to include Turkey’s financial sector,” Tuvey wrote in a research note. Trump’s move against Turkey does not come close to sanctions against Iran, where the U.S. persuaded the international financial messaging system SWIFT to cut off Iranian banks. The U.S. re-imposed the sanctions as it withdrew from a deal limiting Iran’s nuclear programs. That said, Turkey’s economy remains vulnerable despite returning to economic growth after a recession and currency plunge in 2018. Its currency, the lira, has stabilized and a strong tourism season this summer helped reduce the net outflow of money and investment. Thecountryisstillplaguedbydouble-digit inflation and the International Monetary Fund said last month that economic stabilization “remains fragile.” Many companies owe money in foreign currency, leaving them vulnerable to another drop in the lira. German automaker Volkswagen said Tuesday it was postponing a decision on where to locate a new production plant. German media have reported that Izmir in western Turkey was the leading candidate over sites in Bulgaria and Serbia. Josef Braml, head of the Americas program at the German Council on Foreign Relations, said that Trump appears to be trying to get ahead of calls for sanctions from Congress amid resentment among security officials over Trump’s decision to let Turkey invade a strip of northern Syria

to create a buffer zone. The military action is aimed at Kurdish fighters whom Turkey considers terrorists but who have been U.S. allies fighting Islamic State. Braml said that much may depend on what kind of understanding Trump reached with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before announcing he would withdraw U.S. troops from the area, giving Erdogan a free hand. “He didn’t sell the Kurds for nothing,” Braml said. Tougher sanctions risk unintended consequences, such as pushing Turkey closer to China. Trump did not impose sanctions on Turkey even after Erdogan last month defied the U.S. over buying oil

and gas from Iran. Trump appears to want to appear tough on Turkey to pre-empt questions from Congress and the U.S. security services over the implications of his decision to let Turkey attack the Kurds in Syria, Braml said. “It’s always better, if you have a revolt against you, to get ahead of it,” he said. “You appear as the strong man who is doing sanctions, otherwise Congress would force him to do something.” The open question, Braml added, is “whether he’s really serious about using the full arsenal - if it’s just window dressing or is he more serious.”

Roscoe woman sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting boys By Jim Hagerty Reporter

ROCKFORD - The Roscoe woman who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two boys was sentenced to prison last week. Gina M. Colwell, 41, was sentenced to 7 1/2 years behind bars for predatory criminal sexual assault in a case involving a 12-yearold boy and 48 months of sex-offender probation for aggravated criminal sexual abuse in a case involving a 13-year-old boy. She pleaded guilty to both offenses as part of a plea agreement. Colwell must also serve a mandatory three years on parole and register as a sex offender for the rest of her life. Eight people gave statements in front of Judge Brendan Maher at Colwell’s sentencing hearing, including the 12-yearold victim’s mother, who said Colwell befriended her in order to pursue a sexual relationship with her son. “Between November 2014 and February 2016, Gina groomed my son and preyed on him and our family,” she said. “She went

out of her way to help me and be a friend to me. She had parties at her house and would invite the parents to gain their trust, then let the boys stay the night.” Those parties, she said, were nothing more than makeshift breeding grounds for abuse that often occurred when other people were also in the house. “This all happened right under her husband’s nose,” she said. “It’s sickening how a 38-year-old woman can assault a child while her husband is upstairs sleeping or her son is in the other room.” The distraught mom said some time after 2014 she noticed slight oddities about her friendship with Colwell. Gina was suddenly making overwhelming efforts to get close to everyone in her family. And when her son’s behavior started to change, she turned to Colwell for advice. “I remember talking on the phone with her one night and I started crying, telling her how worried I was about (my son), and she said, ‘I’m sure it’s nothing, just teenage hormones’. The fact that this

monster knew that she was destroying my child and continued to assault him shows what a sick predator she truly is. She was conniving and calculating.” While the boy’s mother praised the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office for presenting strong evidence against Colwell, she was anything but pleased with the length of her prison term. “Our family is very, very disappointed in Judge Maher’s decision to only sentence her to 7 1/2 years,” she said, adding that prosecutors asked for a 30-year prison term. “I can’t tell you how frustrated we are with the legal system of the State of Illinois and how angry we are with this sentence. The court had a chance to set an example that the court and this country take sexual abuse and assault by female offenders seriously. And they failed to do that with this pathetic, slap-on-the-wrist punishment. Think of my little boy who did not have the emotional skills, the knowledge, or the ability to stop the rapes or change his circumstance. He was lost,

alone, and helpless. This is an epidemic and it needs to be stopped.” Both victims played youth football on a team coached by Colwell’s husband. A school resource officer also gave a statement and read texts between Colwell and a 15-year-old boy, messages that described specific sex acts. She was not arrested for that alleged incident, however, the boy’s mother told the court Colwell also befriended her before the exchange with the teen began. Prosecutors presented the court with the initials of 11 others boys who told investigators Colwell had abused them sexually, some as far back as 2009. No charges were ever filed. The investigation against Colwell began in February 2016, when the Roscoe Police Department received information that she had multiple sexual encounters with one of the victims between 2014 and 2016. She assaulted the other boy between Dec. 31, 2015, and Jan. 1, 2016.

Fort Worth Police Shooting

‘Smart, ambitious, kind:’ Shooting victim a family linchpin By Jamie Stengle Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) – Atatiana Jefferson was devoted to her family and had moved into her mother’s Fort Worth home earlier this year to help as her mom’s health declined, relatives said. With her mother in the hospital, Jefferson and her 8-year-old nephew were the only two people home early Saturday when a police officer fired a gunshot through a back window, killing Jefferson. The 28-year-old Jefferson, who family members sometimes called “Tay,” and her nephew had devoted their night to Call of Duty and were still up playing the video game when the officer shot. They had the front door of the home open to let the cool breeze in, said Lee Merritt, an attorney for Jefferson’s family. “They did that all night – from sunset until the time that they lost track of time ... when they heard someone prowling around in the bushes,” Merritt said during news

conference with her family Monday. “He and his Auntie Tay experienced the fear of someone prowling in the backyard,” Merritt said. “His Auntie Tay did not allow him to check the window, she checked herself.” The white Fort Worth officer, responding to a call from a neighbor who was concerned about the open door, fired a split-second after shouting at the black woman to show her hands. Police bodycam video shows the officer didn’t identify himself as police. He resigned Monday and was later charged with murder. Amber Carr said her sister, Jefferson, loved spending time with her nephews. “My sister, the relationship she has with my sons is undescribable. Sometimes people think that they are her kids and not mine,” said Carr, who also has a 4-yearold son. She said the last time she spoke to her sister was a week before she was killed. “She came to the hospital in Plano

where I was recovering from a major heart surgery. She came and brought me food, she brought me a new cellphone,” Carr said at the news conference. Jefferson loved playing basketball and video games with the 8-year-old, but she also helped him understand he had to be responsible for getting himself ready for school each morning and wrote him a schedule to help him get organized, Carr said. “She helped him become more independent and self-sufficient,” she said. Jefferson grew up in the Dallas area. She graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree of science in biology, and her family said she worked from home selling medical equipment. Merritt said Jefferson was considering going to medical school and had been studying for the Medical College Admission Test. Another sister, Ashley Carr, who read from a statement prepared by the family,

described Jefferson as “a smart, ambitious, kind person with an adventurous spirit.” She also called her a hard worker. She was good about saving money, the family said after the news conference. They had been paying someone to cut the grass at the mother’s home, but Jefferson bought a lawn mower and weed eater when she moved in and even taught her nephew how to mow. When Carr picked the 8-year-old up at a facility where police had taken him after Jefferson was killed, it was the boy who told his mother about the shooting. In the days since, the child has been the one comforting his mother. Carr said she can see Jefferson’s loving influence in the boy’s actions. “In the middle of the night when I’m crying, he wakes up and tells me to breathe in my nose and out my mouth,” Carr said at the news conference. “He holds me, he hugs me.”

FAMILY FUN DAYS AT

I wouldn’t call myself a country music fan by any stretch, but some country stars – like Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and Loretta Lynn – were household names. But barely a day goes by without at least one Patsy Cline song popping into my head. (Especially lately with the commercial featuring “Back in Baby’s Arms” and hearing the tune to “Walking After Midnight” in last week’s episode of The Walking Dead.) Sissy Spacek’s Oscar-winning portrayal of Lynn in the 1980 film Coal Miner’s Daughter reinforced the singer/songwriter’s status as a musical legend. It also oered a glimpse of her close friendship with country queen Cline (played by Beverly D’Angelo). Then in 1985, Cline got the royal treatment in the movie Sweet Dreams, which earned Jessica Lange an Oscar nomination for playing Cline, who died in a 1963 plane crash at the age of 30. Lifetime’s new TV movie, Patsy & Loretta oers a new take on the friendship between these two strikingly dierent country singers – Cline was brash and bold, while Lynn has always been shy and a bit modest. Instead of having actors lip sync to classic recordings, Lifetime opted to cast Broadway vets Megan Hilty and Jessie Mueller as Cline and Lynn, respectively, and let them sing some of Cline and Lynn’s

biggest hits in the manner of the legends. Stepping into the shoes of musical legends is something both have done before. Hilty played Dolly Parton’s role of Doralee in Boradway’s 9 to 5: The Musical, and Mueller won a Tony Award for portraying Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Despite key art that looks like a countrified take on Thelma and Louise, the Lifetime movie explores the evolution of their friendship. Trying to survive and thrive in a male-dominated industry they could have become rivals. Instead, Cline – who was already an established star when they met – supported and mentored the inexperienced Lynn, and their friendship between the two young mothers blossomed. Written by Angelina Burnett (The Americans, Genius), executive produced by Neil Meron – who has mastered live televised musical productions like Jesus Christ Superstar: Live, and worked with Hilty on the TV series Smash – and directed by Callie Khouri (Nashville, Thelma & Louise), the movie is in good hands. Keeping things in the family: Cline’s daughter, Julie Fudge, and Lynn’s daughter (and Cline’s namesake) Patsy Lynn Russell served as producers.

Stock Market

Solid company earnings power broad rally for US stocks By Alex Veiga and Damian J. Troise Associated Press

Stocks notched solid gains on Wall Street Tuesday as investors welcomed surprisingly good quarterly results from some of the nation’s biggest companies. Strong earnings from UnitedHealth Group, JPMorgan Chase and other companies helped power the market’s broad gains, erasing modest losses from a day earlier. Investors are looking to the wave of quarterly report cards due out over the next few weeks to give them a clearer picture of what impact the trade war between the U.S. and China is having on corporate profits and the broader economy. The encouraging earnings reports came with a spate of surprisingly good forecasts for the rest of the year, which helped ease concerns about a slowdown due to the costly trade conflict. “That was what everybody was afraid of,” said JJ Kinahan, chief market strategist for TD Ameritrade. “Instead, we got ‘no, the future looks good.’” The S&P 500 index climbed 29.53 points,

or 1%, to 2,995.68. The benchmark index is now 1% below its all-time high set in July. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 237.44 points, or 0.9%, to 27,024.80. The Nasdaq gained 100.06 points, or 1.2%, to 8,148.71. Small-company stocks also bounced back after leading the decline a day earlier. The Russell 2000 index picked up 17.87 points, or 1.2%, to 1,523.30. Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 1.77% from 1.75% late Friday. Bond markets were closed Monday for Columbus Day. Technology, health care, financial and communication services stocks drove much of Tuesday’s broad rally, which gave the market its fourth gain in five days. Utilities and makers of consumer goods fell as investors regained an appetite for more risk. The sectors are considered safe-play holdings and usually lag the market when investors are more confident. The latest batch of company earnings reports gave investors a confidence boost that, for the moment, sidelined concerns about whether Washington and Beijing will be able to work out a trade deal. On Friday, the U.S. agreed to suspend a planned hike in tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese goods that had been set to kick in Tuesday. Beijing, meanwhile, agreed to buy $40 billion to $50 billion in U.S. farm products. The U.S. did not, however, cancel plans for more tariffs in December and the sticking points of intellectual property and trade secrets still hang over the dispute. “There really isn’t any pen to paper, it’s just people talking and nothing definite,” Kinahan said. “The earnings are definite.” UnitedHealth Group jumped 8.2%, leading all S&P 500 stocks, after the company hiked its 2019 profit forecast following third-quarter results that beat Wall Street’s expectations. Traders also bid up shares in other health insurers. Anthem gained 6%, Cigna added 5.7% and Humana rose 4.8%. Johnson & Johnson gained 1.6% after it raised its profit forecast for the year following solid third quarter results. JPMorgan Chase rose 3% after the bank beat Wall Street’s third quarter profit forecasts. Citigroup also delivered solid results, lifting its shares 1.4%. Other major banks, including Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo reported mixed results, but their shares still rose. Goldman Sachs added 0.3%, while Wells Fargo gained 1.7%. Investors have been worried that corporate profits could be hampered by the U.S. trade disputes with China and growing economic uncertainty. Corporate earnings are expected to contract by nearly 5% during the third

quarter, according to FactSet. That forecast could soften as more companies report results for the third quarter. Similar forecasts were made ahead of both the first and second quarter reporting periods and companies in the S&P 500 managed to deliver only a modest contraction each time. Investors are in for a busy few days for corporate earnings, including Bank of America, railroad giant CSX, Netflix and IBM on Wednesday. Benchmark crude oil fell 78 cents to settle at $52.81 a barrel. Brent crude oil,

the international standard, dropped 61 cents to close at $58.74 a barrel. Wholesale gasoline was unchanged at $1.61 per gallon. Heating oil declined 1 cent to $1.91 per gallon. Natural gas rose 6 cents to $2.34 per 1,000 cubic feet. Gold fell $14.10 to $1,477.60 per ounce, silver fell 32 cents to $17.31 per ounce and copper fell 2 cents to $2.60 per pound. The dollar rose to 108.84 Japanese yen from 108.37 yen on Monday. The euro strengthened to $1.1035 from $1.1031. Major stock indexes in Europe closed mostly higher.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Maintaining renewable energy momentum BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL CONTRIBUTORS

Extending the cool season garden BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

The cold frosts we experienced this past weekend have slowed down the garden considerably. Tomatoes and peppers will slow down in growing when temperatures stay above 40°F. However, temperatures into the 30s will result in crop damage. Most cool season vegetables are able to tolerate colder temperatures into the 20s. After this, it may be more crop dependent which ones are able to survive. They will grow slower or die o. Root vegetables like carrots, radish, and beets can be protected with a straw mulch layer. Some growers report that their carrots taste sweeter after a hard freeze even with some straw mulch protection. If you are thinking of winter protection, a floating row cover could be an option. It is a synthetic, spun bound fabric that protects against colder temperature but has the ability to allow for rain and sunlight to penetrate through to get to the plants. Depending on the thickness of this fabric, some row covers are able to assist in protection of 2-6 degrees F. This temperature protection can keep your plants alive longer. Row covers can be combined with PVC pipes that create a hoop when both ends of the pipe are placed in the soil and

Curiosity in the

Corn

bent over the row. The row cover can then go over the pipe. This method is called the low tunnel. There are thicker row covers available that can provide increased degree protection; however, it will block out the sun and rainwater so will need to be removed on warm days. On the other end of season extension is the high tunnel or hoop house. Basically, it is a greenhouse without electricity that protects the soil and creates warmer temperatures using the sun. Many fruit and vegetable growers in the Rockford area have these as they can provide protection up to 35 degree dierences. They may extend their crops into November or start their spring season a month early. While most high tunnels are large enough to drive a tractor in, there are smaller ones available for homeowners. Coldframes are micro versions of a high tunnel, still oering some protection for what you are growing. For the smaller high tunnels and coldframes, there are kits and DIY designs available to make these your own. Grant McCarty is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension. His tips and tricks for local eating and your at-home garden appear every week in The Rock River Times.

Govenor J.B Pritzker announced that he doesn’t anticipate the passage of a broad energy plan during this fall veto session. The session is set for three days starting October 28 and three days beginning November 12th. While he indicated energy policy could be discussed his statement was met with disappointment from some organizations pushing for funding for wind and solar development along with energy storage. The groups are seeking passage of the Path to 100, which would provide additional funding new energy projects for which state funding will be exhausted when 2019, comes to an end. However, federal tax incentives will remain in place at a somewhat lower level through 2020 to help reduce the cost of renewable energy installations Without additional funding potential projects could be delayed pending passage of new legislation during next spring’s legislative session. For Rockford and some 40 other communities and four counties in Illinois earning the SolSmart designation the lack of action might be disappointing as well. The designation indicates that a community has removed obstacles to local solar development while encouraging solar growth. Much of the push for renewable energy and energy eciency programs is driven by the need to curtail the burning of fossil fuels to reduce the damage it inflicts on the planet and society. The climate changes being experienced in Illinois in recent years are an expected outcome of rising carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels. While California is a leader in transitioning to renewable energy additional reforms are essential to lessen the impacts of climate change. In California fires are a part of natural conditions and often occur in fall after vegetation dries

out from the heat of summer and the annual oshore winds drive the spread of fires. This natural process is being intensified by climate change. W hile the annual average global temperature has risen by 1 degree Farhenheit over the past 100 years, California has warmed by nearly 3 degrees according to Alexandra Borunda in an article in the National Geographic. The hotter temperatures produce drier plants and extended periods of droughts resulting in more extensive fires. The area burned in the state in recent years is seven times greater than in was in the 1970’s. Given the loss of lives, property and ecosystem services, the question has arisen as to who is responsible for the cost of the damages. With the worse fires in recent years coming from sparks from electrical power lines, Pacific Gas and Electric has decided to temporarily curtail electrical services to thousands of its customers during time when the risk of fires from sparks from its power lines is high. PG&E’s temporarily curtailing their electric service as a means to prevent damaging forest fires marks a new era in dealing with the impacts of climate change. It serves as a temporary solution to the long term problem of living in a climate changing era. As the need to address climate change intensifies, accelerating the transition to renewable energy oers some hope of lessening the extent of damage. While the form the damage takes will vary in dierent places, the nature of the problem is global and needs to be addressed on the individual, local, national and international levels. Additional funding to maintain renewable energy momentum can be seen as a temporary solution to a problem requiring a long term solution.

INTERNATIONAL CREDIT UNION DAY

Celebrating the 71st anniversary of Int’l Credit Union Day Local Service. Global Reach. On October 17, 2019, local credit unions will join with 56,000 credit unions around the world in celebration of International Credit Union (ICU) Day®. There are 200+ million credit union members around the world – more than 100 million in the U.S. alone – and local credit unions join them in celebration of the not-for-profit cooperative spirit that all credit unions share. This cooperative spirit has led to life-changing opportunities for people all over the world who’ve wanted to start a small business, own a home or continue their education but were denied access

to other financial institutions. In many parts of the world, people’s first taste of democracy is through their credit union, where “one member, one vote” is the governing structure. At its most basic level, a credit union is people pooling their money to provide each other with aordable loans – it is literally people helping people. This is why local credit unions celebrate ICU Day. Because credit unions empower people, wherever they are in the world or life, to take control of their financial future. The public is welcome to stop by local branches and celebrate a movement that concerns itself with the financial success of all people.

ROCKFORD - Not pretty. That is what coach Derek King said of the Rockford IceHogs after the club dropped its first three games of the 2019-20 season. “We look good on paper,” King said. “But we’re not a good team right now. We’re not a team. Team is the key word there.” King said he could blame the early skid on the newness of the season, and that it may take some time to figure out lines but doesn’t want to make that excuse. The ‘Hogs are putting in the time at practice and in meetings and he has a good feel about the roles they need to play. But things just haven’t translated well come game time. “We’re just not quite there,” he said. “We practice hard, and we do everything right in practice. But when the games start, we shy off a little bit.” So, now it’s me trying to beat that into them – that it’s okay to make a mistake, but it’s not when every time we make one it ends up in the back of our net.” Such was the case in Monday’s tilt with the Laval Rocket as the IceHogs rarely played in the offensive zone and were outshot 43-22 in a 3-1 loss. As in the first two games, Rockford struck first but then struggled with controlling the puck in the neutral zone. “We are letting them come through the middle with speed,” King said. “And when you do that, you start playing on your heels and it’s hard to recover.” Despite being winless, Rockford’s goaltenders have been the bright spot. The three-man rotation of Kevin Lankinen, Matt Tomkins and Collin Delia have kept the IceHogs close, but they’ve also been left out to dry at times. Delia was the latest victim, stopping 40 Laval shots Monday, keeping a rout from happening in front of home fans on a sunny Columbus Day afternoon. “It’s a good thing (he) was on,” King said. “But that’s not how we want to play and it’s not the way we can afford to play. We’re going to have to tighten it up.” Delia also got the start in last Saturday’s home opener and stopped 24 shots against

Grand Rapids. The spotlight in the 4-2 loss, however, was on rookie Kirby Dach, who was reassigned for conditioning a few hours before the opening faceoff. The stint could determine whether he remains with the Blackhawks or is sent back to the Saskatoon Blades to finish the season. The third overall pick in the 2019 draft, Dach could be with the IceHogs for three more games but can’t be in King’s plans this season because the 18-year-old isn’t eligible to play in the AHL. Dach had some special moments Friday, but spent most his time settling in. He was less of a factor Monday but proved that when he has the puck, he controls the tempo. “It’s nice for (the Blackhawks) to give him to us for a little bit here,” King said. I think he played well for someone who hasn’t played in a while.” Dach was expected to be in Chicago but suffered a concussion in the NHL Prospect Tournament and hasn’t played since Sept. 10. Per Canadian Hockey League rules, 18-yearolds claimed from the CHL but not retained by an NHL club, must be sent back to their junior team. They may play in the AHL for 21 days for conditioning purposes but can’t remain on a roster. Dach is eligible for nine NHL games before Chicago must decide whether to send him back to Saskatoon. King said he has no say in how long the 6’4” forward will be here, but is happy to have him, especially when the club is battling for its first win. “He’s a gifted player who will be an NHL hockey player at some point,” King said. “He’s a big body. He’s got great hands. He’s a smart hockey player.” Dach is not certain about his future in Rockford either but said he will make the best of it. “I am going take this one day at a time,” he said. It’s been a blast so far with spending a lot time in Chicago then coming down here. I’ve enjoyed everything about Chicago and Rockford, so I am looking forward to it.”

The Prodigal Son: Trubisky’s return must lift battered Bears By Robert Zeglinski Contributor

The distinction between a franchise quarterback and a replaceable washout in the NFL isn’t convoluted. Franchise quarterbacks are capable of taking flawed rosters and lifting them to previously inconceivable heights. A franchise quarterback can help a mediocre team overcome an otherwise complete opponent, and often does. Washouts, journeymen, also-rans, nervous Nelly’s – every label is appropriate – veer toward a nexus of neutrality and outright clumsy absent-mindedness. They are either a neutral fold in the grand scheme of things, never swinging the pendulum meaningfully in either direction. Or they take an already haphazardly built group of men and lead them into a bottomless pit of failure. In extreme cases of emotional investment and attachment, that pit mercifully eventually levels out to channelled despair. The quarterbacks who play late into January somehow always have a life preserver on hand in case their ship sinks. They’re the ones courageously punching tyrannical great white sharks in the nose, all the while asking for more danger. Their direct juxtaposition in a running mill of names of passers who have never found a stable footing, are devoured by the ocean’s most infamous apex predator the moment they suffer an unfortunate traumatic wound in the open water. Instead of punching a carnivorous and conveniently human-sized fish in the nose, they only serve to place themselves in more precarious positions the more they struggle. The more they flail their arms, the more danger they’re in. In terms of measured time in the professional football universe – which now meanders about similarly to most contests thanks to inundated and faulty officiating reviews – it’s been quite awhile since Mitchell Trubisky strapped on shoulder pads in a meaningful context. Roughly three weeks in the NFL means having missed out on a cornucopia of controversies: justified and manufactured. It translates to a risk of losing out on the particular season’s latest trend or hot button topic sweeping the league. You might as well be playing a divergent era in any instance you miss almost a month of play. Football time does not prescribe to the strict laws of the natural universe, as any mind of a single-minded, drill sergeant coach will readily profess. What an extended absence affords any player, aside from the ability to disconnect from a harmful cultural ecosystem that refuses to sleep, is the pleasure of being forgotten. That may sound like a charac-

teristic most would want to actively avoid. But in Trubisky’s unique circumstances as a quarterback who has yet to find a steady footing, there’s nothing better than being given a clean slate. Disconnecting allows for proper recalibration. (It’s not the type of “disconnecting” where you unplug a charger and plug it back in desperately hoping for a miracle because you have no other technological savvy.) The last anyone saw of the third-year passer, Trubisky was writhing around in excruciating pain on Soldier Field’s turf. After an unfortunate scrambling attempt went awry, the 25-year-old happened to enjoy a slight tear in his non-throwing labrum along with a dislocated shoulder. In his absence, the Bears managed not only the passable and palatable of any team without its starting quarterback, but the admirable: they stayed afloat with an entirely anodyne 1-1 record. The Bears did not thrive without Trubisky. Far from it, in fact. But they didn’t exactly miss his penchant for sailed throws, brain freezes in the middle of crucial plays, and hurried panic at the first sign of no pressure. Trubisky hasn’t been an active hindrance, but he’s a left a lot (a lot) to be desired in the basics of quarterback play taught at Pop Warner levels. Absence not only makes the heart grow fonder, it also opens the door for the possibility of redemption to those overlooked and disgraced that are seeking it. As much more sizable bodies in the form of injured reserve mates Kyle Long and Akiem Hicks figuratively begin to drop around Halas Hall, the quarterback’s directive is simple. It’s his job, no one else’s, to lift up an ailing team on the brink of coming apart at the seams over the next 11 weeks (and change, if Chicago enjoys a fit of fortune). It’s a good thing Trubisky started the week as a full participant in Bears practices: always a positive premonition. Now as Matt Nagy deploys the typical cliche nuclear secret game of “will he or won’t he?” before announcing Trubisky’s official return, that vision can’t become a nightmare. Something jives well with an analogy of a child’s rubber-like malleability to a professional athlete avoiding monstrous 300-pound men running full tilt. “If he ends up playing, then he plays,” espoused Nagy when asked to elaborate on Trubisky’s status for a monumental bout against the 5-1 Saints this Sunday. “I was dealing with my son playing youth football this weekend, you know. If he’s hurt, and he’s going to get the OK to play; you can’t tell somebody to play a game and not get hit, you can’t do it. If you’re OK to play a game, then you’re OK to get hit. It’s not hard, you

know. It’s pretty simple – for me, it is.” An overly defensive tangent aside, it’s a sound indicator that the Bears can expect their former No. 2 overall pick to be at the wheel against New Orleans. Bearing in mind the state of their conference and division, the 3-2 Bears need all hands on deck, especially their anointed captain. Chicago’s defense is special, but it can’t be the sole calling card of victory to lean on. Eventually the hand betrays you and you overdraw. The NFC on the whole, and the NFC North to a lesser extent, figures to have too much of a glut of ebbing competence and efficiency. There is no juggernaut. There is no dividing line between greatness and everyone else chasing after a Holy Grail. There’s only chaotic, primordial violence separating the best from the worst in accordance with Darwin’s teachings if he paid one iota of his attention to athletics. A survival of not only the fittest, but the prudent. A rumble the Trubisky-led Bears will be lucky to walk away from unscathed. Every game from here on out has the capacity for the Bears to take significant, fatal damage to their hull, or merely continue sailing on. Every game carries

the weight of a playoff berth and a new narrative, for better or worse. In their moment of need, while plunging full speed ahead into a coming storm, the Bears need the man they selected to be their franchise quarterback to finally start featuring like a franchise quarterback. If he doesn’t, the stuffing will come out out of the fresh creases and it will create quite a mess all over the floor. The kind of mess that can’t be readily stitched back together good as new. Never before have the Bears needed Trubisky as much as they do in this present moment. He’s been hardily tested to this point, but not as stringently demanding in a situation like this. The next three months either sees Trubisky redeem himself and live up to his proposed potential, or help plant early seeds into the Bears’ minds of their near future at quarterback. In other words, the referendum of a franchise quarterback or journeyman is about to be made. Definitive rulings on game-changers and inept amateurs are routinely made in far less time with little attention to detail. Robert is a writer, editor, and producer.
