Rosemary Collins get chairman’s nod for interim state’s attorney By Jim Hagerty Reporter
ROCKFORD - Winnebago County Board Chairman recommended Judge Rosemary Collins for interim state’s attorney last Friday. The recommendation went in front of the full board Tuesday. The result of that vote was not available at press time. As state’s attorney, Collins will be sworn in Dec. 3, when current State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato is sworn in as circuit judge, a position she held for more 30 years. “We had more than one qualified, outstanding candidate,” Haney said at a press conference Friday. “The burden when you have this many candidates is to pick the one you believe – when you factor in everything – best fits the needs of the community and the office at this time.” Haney said Collins’ background as prosecutor, public defender and judge weighed heavily in her favor. There were a total of six applicants interviewed for the elected position Collins will hold until 2020 if the appoint-
ment is approved by the board. County Democrats, on Thursday, recommended Marilyn Hite Ross, who now leads the office’s criminal division. Assistant prosecutors Wendy Larson, Paul Carpenter and Alison Meason also applied along with Rockford attorneys Rene Hernandez and Dan McGrail. The county declined to interview Deputy State’s Attorney Jim Brun because he’s pulled Republican ballots in the county, leading officials to believe appointing him would violate state law that requires Bruscato’s successor to be a Democrat. “All factors were taken into consideration,” Haney said. “There’s a lot to be proud of. I received feedback that respect and admire greatly. Part of this process included talking to folks in the public safety continuum. I wanted feedback on questions we should ask in the process. So, I was talking to people on the court side – not about the people but about the questions to make sure we fleshed out the right answers so we make the best recommendation possible.”
Some of the feedback Haney received during the selection process came from Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara, who praised Collins in a Nov. 13 letter. “During her time on the bench, she has overseen and rendered verdicts in hundreds of high-profile and difficult cases,” the mayor wrote.”She has worked specifically to address the issues of family violence and crime prevention and understands the impact of the many issues facing our judicial and law enforcement system. She would, of course, bring that broad perspective to her work as the state’s attorney and is well aware of the public safety challenges facing our community.” Collins has a reputation as an advocate against domestic violence and said Thursday she would work strongly with other community agencies to help children live crime-free lives. Her vision coincides with McNamara’s for a Family Justice Center and the city’s Office on Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking. R.

"But I don't want to move to a nursing home." Every year thousands of mature adults are forced to leave their homes and move into nursing homes or assisted living centers. According to Mary Anne Johnson, M.D., "Most nursing home admissions are unplanned." For this reason, the decision to transition "Mom" or "Dad" from home to "long term care" can be an emotional minefield, often creating feelings of distrust, resentment, and even betrayal amongst family members. Those being forced to move resent being made to give up their homes and independence, while their adult children may feel immense guilt for insisting that "Mom" or "Dad" be placed in a "safer" environment. Some families never fully recover from the emotional damage inflicted during this life changing transition. “She’s really gone downhill since I saw her last.” The primary reason for nursing home placement in the is physical impairment. Weakness, painful joints poor balance, limited flexibility, lack of endurance-any of these can make it difficult (or even dangerous!) to perform simple tasks like cooking, bathing, stair climbing, or even getting up from the commode. Family members are often shocked to visit and find an older loved one has declined over a short period of time and feel obligated to raise the alarm to others. ”Mom can hardly get up from the chair and nearly fell twice while I was there, Something needs to be done,” Let’s face it; declining strength and mobility are just part of growing older. The sad truth is - there will likely come a day when we will need to be cared for. But you know what is even sadder? Many allow that day to arrive prematurely, due to lack of knowledge. The truth is, our bodies are amazing and resilient machines that respond positively to exercise and activity at any age. Studies have repeatedly shown that people in their 90’s achieve increased strength, balance, coordination, and every other positive benefit associated with exercise and physical activity.
Dr. Ron Samaniego, PT, DPT is a premier consultant at helping people overcome physical impairment...it's what he does best! Instead of usual exercises alone to strengthen weak muscles and improving unsteady gait, Dr. Ron uses REVOLUTIONARY manual techniques and ADVANCED technologies to improve his patient's condition. Don't wait until a fall in the kitchen or a slip in the tub results in an unplanned nursing home admission. Take action now and be confident in your ability, to be safe in your home for years to come! You'll be doing yourself and your loved ones a great service! TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Many Central American migrants camped in Tijuana after crossing Mexico in a caravan said Monday that a protest over the weekend by residents demanding they leave frightened them and left them even more anxious while they try to get into the United States. The angry protests have been fed by concerns raised by President Donald Trump’s month-long warnings that criminals and gang members are in the group and even terrorists, though there is no evidence of that. About 500 people demonstrated in an affluent section of Tijuana on Sunday against the caravan. Dozens of protesters then marched to an outdoor sports complex near downtown where 2,500 migrants are staying, sleeping on dirt fields and under bleachers after arriving at the border city a week ago. Dulce Alvarado, 28, from Lempira, Honduras, said she was stepping out of a corner grocery near the complex carrying her 2-year-old son when she was surrounded by the demonstrators chanting “Get out!” and “We don’t want you here!” “I was very scared,” Alvarado said. A Tijuana police officer saw them in the crowd and helped them get out and behind police tape marking off the block where the sports complex is located. The protest eventually ended peacefully. On Monday, a Mexican holiday, streets were quiet with many businesses near the complex closed. Tensions have built as nearly 3,000 migrants from the caravan poured into Tijuana in recent days after more than a month on the road – and with many more months likely ahead of them while they seek asylum in the U.S. The federal government estimates the number of migrants could soon swell to 10,000. U.S. border inspectors are processing only about 100 asylum claims a day at Tijuana’s main crossing to San Diego. Asylum seekers register their names in a tattered notebook managed by the migrants themselves that had more than 3,000 names even before the caravan arrived. For most of this city of 1.6 million, the arrival of thousands of Central Americans is not noticeable. Most migrants stay within a three-block radius of the sports complex that faces the towering metal walls topped with barbed wire at the
U.S.-Mexico border. But many residents fear with the passage of time their presence will take its toll and crime could go up. Since 2016, thousands of Haitians who also tried to get to the U.S. ended up settling here, while at the same time, Tijuana has taken in thousands of Mexicans deported from the United States. Tijuana also has been struggling with drug violence and some say they do not want the caravan bringing more problems. Sandra Lucia Montanez, 28, a Tijuana psychologist, said news reports last month of Central Americans storming Mexico’s southern border fed the fears. But, she said, it’s important that Tijuana not forget it is a city of migrants. “Almost no one here is from Tijuana,” Montanez said. “We have to help the neediest ones. They come from countries with a lot of poverty. Honduras is worse off than Mexico.” The United States has dramatically increased border security in preparation for the caravan’s arrival, closing lanes at ports of entry to place cement barriers topped with razor wire that can be quickly moved to block passage should there be a mass number who try to force their way into the country. But the lane closures have also made it harder for cross-border residents to go back and forth into the U.S. to work and shop. The San Ysidro port of entry is one of the world’s busiest border crossings, with more than 40,000 vehicles and 34,000 pedestrians using it daily. On Monday, U.S. authorities closed off northbound traffic for several hours and closed a pedestrian lane at the crossing to install more security barriers, after a tip that people were gathering in Tijuana to rush the border checkpoints. “Waiting until a large group of persons mass at the border to attempt an illegal crossing is too late for us,” said Pete Flores, director of field operations for Customs and Border Protection in San Diego. Demonstrators at Sunday’s protest complained that some migrants have been aggressive, yelling insults at U.S. Border Patrol agents and climbing walls and getting into fights at Tijuana’s Pacific beach. But Tijuana police officer Victor Coronel, who has overseen security outside the sports complex where the migrants are staying, said those fears are based on the bad behavior of only a
handful of migrants. “The problem is that there has been bad information circulating on social media, with videos of two or three migrants acting badly, climbing the wall or grabbing food in stores,” said Coronel, adding that most are poor people simply trying to find work. Coronel said he hopes as time passes, many will opt to go home or find jobs in Mexico and integrate into society. Lesbia Navarro, 36, stayed inside the stadium with her four children ages 3 to 16 as they listened to the shouts and insults from the protesters Sunday. “We only want to be here awhile, until we can get into the United States to work,” said Navarro, of Choloma, Honduras. “We don’t want to cause anybody problems.” The Tijuana protests came amid what may be a hardening of positions in some northern Mexican states against the migrants. In Jalisco state, which the caravan passed through on its way to Tijuana, officials said they would no longer open shelters, citing problems with fights involving migrants last week. Instead, the state will provide water, some food and escorts at nine points along the main highway through the state to help ensure the migrants don’t have to stop. Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum has called the migrants’ arrival an “avalanche” that the city is ill-prepared to handle, calculating that they will be in Tijuana for at least six months as they wait to file asylum claims. Gastelum has appealed to the federal government for more assistance to cope with the influx – while more migrants continue to head to the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump used Twitter on Sunday to voice support for the mayor. He wrote that like Tijuana, “the U.S. is ill-prepared for this invasion, and will not stand for it. They are causing crime and big problems in Mexico. Go home!” He followed that tweet by writing: “Catch and Release is an obsolete term. It is now Catch and Detain. Illegal Immigrants trying to come into the U.S.A., often proudly flying the flag of their nation as they ask for U.S. Asylum, will be detained or turned away.”

Freshman Dems face thorny forstyour support of our 1 Birthday first vote: Yes or no on Pelosi Party! Have a Happy & Blessed
By Lisa Mascaro and Alan Fram Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s the thorny first question confronting newly elected House Democrats: Will you vote for Nancy Pelosi? Even before they’ve taken office, the freshmen swept in by the midterm elections are caught at the center of an escalating power struggle over Pelosi’s future. The clash intensified Monday as Pelosi’s critics unveiled a letter signed by 16 Democrats, including five freshmen, vowing to oppose her. If that holds, it could be enough to derail her bid. If not, she could reclaim the gavel she once held. “It’s the question that we got most often,” said Rep.-elect Joe Neguse of Colorado, on CBS. He intends to support Pelosi. “You know I think that it’s important that we have steady leadership right now.” The vote on a new speaker will be among the first cast in the new Congress, a dramatic roll call that often becomes fodder for campaign ads. For many of the Democratic freshmen, it’s a moment of truth after a number of them promised on the campaign trail to oppose Pelosi and demand new leadership. For now, just five freshmen have signed onto the letter opposing Pelosi. Two of them, Anthony Brindisi in New York and Ben McAdams in Utah, are in races that have not yet been called by The Associated Press. Other freshmen who have said they would oppose Pelosi did not sign the letter, and the fight for their allegiance is raging behind the scenes. The showdown is splitting Democrats after they took control of the House in the
midterm elections, overshadowing what would be the historic return of the first woman to ever hold the speaker’s office. Pelosi ally Jan Schakowsky of Illinois says she understands the freshmen’s nervousness. But she also says, “Two years from now people are not going to decide whether they re-elect these people based on Nancy Pelosi. And even now I think it had very little to do with affecting the election. Hello! We won with Nancy Pelosi.” On the one hand, Pelosi’s supporters say now more than ever the party needs the California Democrat’s leadership as a skilled strategist and tireless fundraiser to confront President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans in Congress. On the other, Pelosi’s critics say she has become such a weight on the party, starring as the chief villain in Republican attack ads against Democrats, that she needs to step aside and make way for a new generation of leadership. Among those leading the effort against her, Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts has said his group is trying to protect the freshmen so they can survive their re-elections without having Pelosi’s image hanging over their campaigns. The Pelosi opponents’ theory is, once it’s clear she doesn’t have the votes, a new leader will emerge. “Our majority came on the backs of a majority that said they would support new leadership,” the group wrote in the letter. “We promised to change the status quo and we intend to deliver on that promise.” All of the freshman opponents so far are men, and Pelosi’s critics have been criticized, especially on social media, as being led mostly by men. Just two of those signing the letter are women. Several high-profile freshmen who

have vowed to oppose Pelosi are notably missing from the letter. Rep.-elect Abigail Spanberger of Virginia said Sunday on ABC she had “tremendous” respect for Pelosi, who “blazed a trail” for the record number of new women, but would be voting against her. She has not signed on. “If we are going to turn a page and bring civility back to the political discussions, we need to change the people who are directing that conversation,” she said. “But I have been very, very clear and honest about my intentions.” Rep. Lauren Underwood of Illinois said Sunday, “I have not made up my mind.” Pelosi’s office insisted Monday she has the backing to become speaker again. “Leader Pelosi remains confident in her support,” said spokesman Drew Hammill. With the Democrats holding 232 seats, Pelosi can’t afford to lose many votes and still hold the 218 needed to become speaker, presuming all Republicans oppose her. That margin could shift, though, if lawmakers are absent or simply vote “present,” which reduces the threshold. Her supporters say that after winning difficult elections against Trump’s campaigning, the Democrats can’t afford to get bogged down in a protracted leadership fight ahead of the Jan. 3 vote. They are heading toward an internal caucus vote when lawmakers return from the Thanksgiving recess that will test Pelosi’s support. One potential rival, Rep. Martha Fudge of Ohio, did not sign onto the letter. That’s a similar tack to the one taken two years ago by Fudge’s ally, Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, who challenged Pelosi during internal caucus elections. Fudge has said she will decide after Thanksgiving if she is running. Republican Rep. Tom Reed of New York, a Trump ally who has said he could vote for Pelosi if she agrees to rules changes to move power away from the speaker’s office, warned freshmen against waffling. “They’re going to get crucified, crucified with that first vote,” Reed said in an interview. “You better think about that long and hard.” Some freshmen appear to be moving in Pelosi’s direction. “Right now she’s the only person who’s running, so it would appear as though that’s where my vote would go,” said Rep.elect Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, on CBS. “She’s an effective person in that job.”

Priest at center of 2006 lawsuit on Diocese sex abuse list By Jim Hagerty Reporter
A former Rockford priest at the center of chilling allegations and a 2006 lawsuit appears on a list of 15 priests accused of sexual abuse. Theodore “Ted” Feely, who Rockford resident Donald Bondick claimed in a fivecount lawsuit molested him and other boys, is one of the 10 men on the list released by the Diocese of Rockford Wednesday that have since died. The list is part of a letter by Bishop David Malloyand includes six priests, one deacon and eight priests/brothers. The accusations range from 1925 to 1991. According the 2006 lawsuit, Feely raped Bondick in 1969, when Bondick was 13. “Feely repeatedly molested Plaintiff to develop various psychological coping mechanisms and symptoms of psychological distress, including depression, repression and dissociation,” the complaint reads. “As a result, Plaintiff was under a disability and has only recently been able to link his severe psychological and emotional problems with the acts perpetrated by Feely.” Bondick’s lawyers claimed the Diocese failed to take any action regarding the abuse, which the suit alleged was consistent with a decades-long practice of failing to respond to credible allegations.” “On numerous occasions since at least 1960 the Defendants received credible allegations of sexual abuse but failed to take the actions necessary to properly investigate the allegations,” the suit continued. “On information and belief, the Defendants engaged in a pattern and practice of pedophilic behavior, to protect its reputation and avoid the scandal that would result if parishioners and the public at large were aware of the incidents of pedophilia in the church community.” The Diocese responded to the lawsuit in a Feb. 24, 2006, statement: “We steadfastly believe that lawsuits should be resolved in a court of law, so we have no intention of attempting to try this case in the media. However, the allegations in this complaint are so sensationalized, harassing and irrelevant, justice demands that we respond. “First, all charges and characterizations regarding the diocese and its officials in this complaint are false. “Sexual abuse of minors is a grave sin and heinous crime. Victims should be comforted and assisted in their efforts to achieve healing, perpetrators should be severely punished, and the public should be protected from them. “The diocese has consistently acted in accord with these principles, and we will continue to do so in the future. The complaint filed against the diocese is based on a number of assumptions that are false.
In response to these assumptions, we note specifically that: “Franciscan Father Theodore Feely was not a diocesan priest, did not work for the diocese, and was never under the direction of the diocese. He was a member of the Franciscan order and not a priest of this diocese. “The diocese had absolutely no knowledge of alleged abuse by Franciscan Father Theodore Feely until 2002. At that point, the allegations were over 30 years old and Feely had been dead for a decade. Nevertheless, the diocese immediately notified officials of the St. Bonaventure Province of the Conventual Franciscans, who had jurisdiction over Feely and St. Anthony Parish. Soon thereafter, the Franciscans notified parishioners of St. Anthony Parish of the allegations of a cover-up, the record shows that we were forthcoming to our members and to the public regarding this case.” Bondick is one of two men who accused Feely of sexual abuse. He recounted what happened to him in a 2005 TRRT series, under the name “Thomas White” because was not ready to reveal his identity. Bondick said the abuse started during a four-day trip to Wisconsin Dells. Feely got permission from the boy’s mother to take him along. Before they even arrived at their hotel, Bondick said the priest offered him a cigarette. As the night progressed, Feely fed him liquor and beer. Bondick said he woke in the middle of the night to Feely choking him. The boy was then sodomized. On the way home, Bondick said Feely warned that if he told his parents what happened, they wouldn’t believe him. Confused, he attempted to find refuge in the church and told another priest about his weekend with the man some boys called “Creepy Feely.” “I was very direct and tried to use clinical terms,” Bondick said. “I just said, ‘Father Feely put his erect penis in my anus while he choked me.’” The priest’s reaction was not what Bondick expected. “He pulled me out of the confessional by my hair, called me evil, then pushed me down the stairs,” Bondick said. “I remember sitting at the bottom; I told him if he ever touched me again I’d kill him.” Ted Feely’s parish history: 1958—Ordained; 1959-1961—St . T hom a s C hu r c h, Arlington, Calif.; 1962—St. Paul the Apostle, Pismo Beach, Calif.; 1963—St. Bronislava, Chicago; 1964-1968—Queen of Angels, Riverside, Calif.; 1969-1973—St. Anthony’s of Padua Church, Rockford;
1974-1975—Our Lady of Guadalupe, Riverside, Calif.; 1976—St. Thomas, Riverside, Calif.; 1977-1978—Queen of Angels, Riverside, Calif.; 1979-1980—St. John of God, Norwalk, Calif.; 1982—St. George, Stockton, Calif.; 1983-1988—Queen of Angels, Riverside, Calif.; and 1989-1991—St. T homas Aqu i nas Cathedral, Reno, Nevada. In Wednesday’s letter, Malloy said faithful Catholics “have experienced hurt and grief and indignation, the natural consequences of the horrendous sexual abuse scandal plaguing the Catholic Church.” Following are the names of the accused priests, followed by their ordination year. Priests Mark A Campobello, 1991 Harlan B. Clapsaddle, 1977 Thomas Considine, 1966; Died in 1988 John C. Holdren, 1971; Died in 2018 William I. Joffe, 1957; Died in 2008 Joseph M. Tully, 1925; Died in 1982 Deacons Michael Frazier, 1982 Priests/Brothers James Campbell, 1972; Died in 2007 Theodore Feely, 1958; Died in 1991 Walter E. Johnson, 1953; Died in 2018 Augustine K. Jones, 1953; Died in 2007 Peter D. Kohler, 1968; Died in 2014 Richard Kuhl, 1954; Died in 2009 Joseph M. Lessard, 1980 William D. Virtue, 1975 Malloy said the names are part of a working list that has been published in The Observer Catholic newspaper and reported by other media outlets. Some priests are left off if their investigations are pending. “In some cases, names of clergy not previously disclosed appear on this list, and that is because the allegations in their regard were reviewed in the process of compiling this list and were judged to be substantiated,” the bishop said. Bondick said has no reason to believe Malloy and that the list is egregiously incomplete. And he doesn’t mean there’s a few names missing. He says investigations not withstanding, the number should be in the hundreds, if not more. “We are talking about almost 100 years and a large Diocese,” he said. “I’d say the number could be at least 1,000. But it’s not. Because it’s their practice to protect these people and the church.” Since making his allegations public, Bondick says he has met more than 200 people who say they were abused by local priests, including Ted Feely, a man he was
a split second from killing three years after the trip to the Dells. It is a day he rarely spoke about before undergoing a decade of intense psychotherapy. It was the day 16-year-old Donald Bondick looked through the iron sights of a 12-gauge shotgun and dialed in between Ted Feely’s shoulder blades. High on heroin, Bondick drove his 1973 AMC Javelin to Feely’s church and strategically positioned himself for the kill. He knew when the priest would arrive. He stalked the man for months and had the attack planned. He’d park where he had a clean shot, blast a deer slug into Feely’s back from about 40 yards, then drive off into the night. When Feely arrived, he pulled his blue Dodge Dart into the rectory garage and exited the car to close the overhead door, unaware he was moments from meeting the God he claimed to serve. But that meeting would have to wait another 18 years. “I had the bead on him,” Bondick said. “But I couldn’t do it. I said to myself, ‘He doesn’t deserve this. He doesn’t deserve to get it in the back. He deserves to see it coming.’” Bondick had bouts with drugs and alcohol for the next 17 years, self medicating and stuffing memories of what happened at the hands of a man he trusted as much as his own father. That’s the way it was in those days. To parishioners, priests were not only “men of God,” they were the next best thing. Donald Bondick’s family was no exception. Ted Feely drank beer and watched football with his dad and often had dinner with them. Bondick’s outlook is different today. Since getting sober 30 years ago, he’s been vocal about the way the church handles allegations of sexual abuse by priests. Sometimes he is received with open arms, other times he’s shunned, ridiculed and told to “get over it,” the last thing he says anyone should say to a survivor. He says he can count on one hand, one finger to be exact, the number of church officials who showed him compassion for what he’s gone through for nearly 50 years. He’s also come to terms with what he says he’s come to know about the Catholic Church. “It’s a cult,” he said. “And these men are pimps, nothing more. They sell their soul when they become priests.” Bondick’s lawsuit was eventually dismissed because of statutes of limitations, so there were no monetary damages awarded. The church, however, paid for his 11 years of therapy. “I made the trip to downtown Chicago twice a week,” he said. Bondick retired from the United States Postal Service in 2003 and is now writing a book about his life. R.

8 films you didn’t know were filmed in Illinois By Dann Gire
symmetry. The railroad tunnel at Tunnel Hill in Johnson County figures in, as do Marion’s town square, downtown Vienna and Ferne Clyffe State Park near Goreville.
Film critic of the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald
Maybe Illinois has produced so many cool movies because it offers such a vastly diverse spectrum of locations to tell highly visual stories. Or maybe our state has pumped out impressive pictures because the Illinois Film Office and Chicago Film Office cut through red tape for appreciative filmmakers. Or, maybe Illinois seals those deals with its attractive 30-percent tax credit on film production costs. (Being the only state in the union with a diversity provision as part of its tax credits can’t hurt.) Many local scenes turn up in iconic Illinois-filmed motion pictures such as “The Blues Brothers,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Home Alone,” “The Breakfast Club” and “The Fugitive.” Here are eight others filmed at locations across the state that are worth a special mention, too.
2. Munger Road
St. Charles writer/director Nicholas Smith and a crew of young filmmakers from Chicago’s Columbia College shot this atmospheric “suburban legend” horror tale over 16 nights in Bartlett, St. Charles, Elburn, Geneva and Sugar Grove. Smith was 26 at the time. Set during St. Charles’ annual Scarecrow Festival, the story involves an escaped serial killer and two teen couples stuck over a set of railroad tracks allegedly haunted by the ghosts of children killed in a fiery crash.
3. Groundhog Day
The town of Punxsutawney got so miffed that Harold Ramis chose suburban Woodstock to play the Pennsylvania town in Danny Rubin’s supernatural comedy that it refused to allow the real Punxsutawney Phil to appear in the movie. Too bad that Punxsutawney’s Town Center didn’t look good on camera, according to Ramis. Woodstock turned its movie fame into an annual “Groundhog Day” festival.
1. Dig Two Graves
Hunter Adams’ horror tale hails from the comic book tradition of “Tales from the Crypt,” but it stands on its own as a crisply edited, surprising display of craftsmanship on a budget. Adams fell in love with the rich, diverse and truly creepy locations in several counties at the state’s southern tip, where he whisks us into a rural nightmare of Kubrickian
4. Contagion
Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 virus-pandemic thriller shot scenes all over
the suburbs, most notably at the old Sherman Hospital in Elgin and the Central Elementary School in Wilmette. A key grocery scene (with Matt Damon) was filmed in downtown Western Springs. Even Waukegan got into the act, with its Amstutz Expressway acting the role of Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway.
5. The Fury
Much of Brian De Palma’s stylistically sleazy 1978 horror movie was shot in Chicago. It used the same room from Chicago’s now-extinct Plymouth Hotel that would later be used in 1980’s “The Blues Brothers.” But the film’s best claim to fame would be the deadly carnival ride filmed in the once-immensely popular Old Chicago indoor amusement park in Bolingbrook.
6. The Untouchables
Brian De Palma returned to the Windy City to shoot a 1987 version of the popular TV series starring Robert Stack and created one of the two best films to showcase the city of Chicago as an essential presence on the silver screen. The highlight? The slow-motion gunfight on the steps at Union Station, a breathlessly constructed homage to the famous Odessa Steps Sequence from Sergei Eisenstein’s seminal 1926 silent Russian masterpiece “Battleship Potemkin.”
7. The Dark Knight
The second film to showcase the city of Chicago as an essential presence on the silver screen. Except now, the dark and gritty Windy City plays the role of the even darker and grittier Gotham City in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman movie. The highlight? A carefully planned explosive flip of an 18-wheeler upside down in the middle of LaSalle Street. No digital effects needed.
8. Lucas
This 1986 high school coming-of-age drama shot several scenes in Glen Ellyn (including Glenbard West High School, Lake Ellyn Park and The Glen Theatre) plus Highland Park High School and, most notably, Arlington High School in Arlington Heights, which had been closed before being transformed into the Christian Liberty Academy. The movie gave Glen Ellyn actor Tom Hodges his first speaking role. The weekly Illinois Bicentennial series is brought to you by the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors and Illinois Press Association. More than 20 newspapers are creating stories about the state’s history, places and key moments in advance of the Bicentennial on Dec. 3, 2018. US stocks take sharp losses as tech, internet companies drop By Marley Jay Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Big technology and internet companies tumbled again Monday, leading to broad losses across the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly fell 500 points. Apple, Microsoft and Amazon, the most valuable companies on the market, sustained some of the worst losses. Facebook, another longtime investor darling that has fallen out of favor since this summer, also skidded. After a brutal October, stocks had started to recover early this month. But continued losses for tech companies have sent major indexes lower again. Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide Investment Management, said investors are dumping the high-profile technology companies that have dominated the market recently. He said investors are picking companies based on traditional profit and revenue figures instead of the kind of user growth figures favored by tech companies. “These things had outperformed the S&P by a mile over the last three years,” he said, but that’s changed now. “On good days they’re not the leaders, and on bad days they’re the laggards.” The S&P 500 index fell 45.54 points, or 1.7 percent, to 2,690.73. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 395.78 points, or 1.6 percent, to 25,017.44. It was down as much as 512 earlier. The Nasdaq composite skidded 219.40 points, or 3 percent, to 7,028.48. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks lost 30.99 points, or 2 percent, to 1,496.54.
Investors focused again on trade tensions between the U.S. and China after the two countries clashed at a Pacific Rim summit over the weekend. A steep loss for Boeing, a major exporter which would stand to suffer greatly in a protracted trade war, weighed heavily on the Dow. Boeing gave up 4.5 percent to $320.94, but is still one of the best-performing stocks in the 30-stock index. Apple fell 4 percent to $185.86 on renewed worries that iPhone sales could slow, Microsoft lost 3.4 percent to $104.62 and Amazon gave back 5.1 percent to close at $1,512.29. High-dividend stocks like real estate companies and utilities, which investors favor when they are fearful of market turmoil, held up better than the rest of the market. The disagreements between the U.S. and China at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting left investors feeling pessimistic about the prospects for a deal that would end the trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies. For the first time in almost 30 years, leaders at the summit could not agree on a joint declaration on world trade. Talks between the U.S. and China are continuing ahead of a meeting between Ch inese President X i Jinping and President Donald Trump planned for the G-20 summit later this month. Among tech and internet stocks, chipmaker Nvidia dropped another 21 percent to $144.70. Nvidia said last week that it had a large number of unsold chips because of a big drop in mining of cryptocurrencies. Facebook sank 5.7 percent to $131.55 and Netflix lost 5.6 percent to $270.21.

The S&P 500 index of technology companies has now plunged 13.1 percent since the end of September. Nissan said its chairman, Carlos Ghosn, was arrested Monday and will be dismissed from the company after allegedly under-reporting his income. Nissan said an internal investigation found Ghosn under-reported his income by millions of dollars and engaged in other “significant misconduct.” U.S.-traded shares of Nissan lost 5.8 percent to $16.90. In Paris, shares of Nissan’s partner Renault dropped 8.4 percent. Industrial companies and retailers also stumbled. Caterpillar fell 3.1 percent to $125.98 and Nike lost 3 percent to $72.52. Benchmark U.S. crude reversed an early loss and rose 0.5 percent to $56.76 a barrel in New York. U.S. crude prices have dropped for six weeks in a row and are trading around their lowest level in about nine months. Brent crude, used to price international oils, was little changed at $66.79 a barrel in London. Wholesale gasoline added 0.4 percent to $1.58 a gallon. Heating oil gained 0.6 percent to $2.09 a gallon. Natural gas surged 10 percent to $4.70 per 1,000 cubic feet. The parent company of California utility Pacific Gas & Electric fell again after it disclosed that it had a power line failure near the start of a deadly wildfire the morning the fire began. The Mercury News of San Jose reported Saturday that the company said it had an outage at 6:45 a.m. on Nov. 8 in Concow. The Camp Fire has killed at least 77 people and destroyed more than 10,500 homes. PG&E stock fell 4.7 percent to $23.26. The stock has plunged 51 percent since Nov. 8 as investors try to assess the damages the company might have to pay if it’s held liable for the blaze. Gold rose 0.2 percent to $1,225.30 an ounce. Silver inched up 0.1 percent to $14.40 an ounce. Copper held steady at $2.80 a pound. Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 3.05 percent from 3.07 percent. The dollar slipped to 112.54 yen from 112.83 yen. The euro rose to $1.1453 from $1.1412. The pound rose to $1.2855 from $1.2831. France’s CAC 40 gave up 0.8 percent and Germany’s DAX slid 0.9 percent. Britain’s FTSE 100 slipped 0.2 percent. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 0.7 percent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 0.7 percent. South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.4 percent.

100% renewable energy for Illinois By Drs. Robert & Sonia Vogl Contributors
Our last two articles provided a detailed look at how Bruce Roe, a retired engineer, has approached making his home more energy efficient followed by a description of his solar system and how he is maximizing its electrical output. The point of highlighting his work is to illustrate the effectiveness of combining using energy efficiently and solar electricity as a means to move society toward a cleaner energy future. His intent is to illustrate how an existing home can become a zero net energy building in northern Illinois. On ComEd’s website an energy usage guide informs citizens how much electricity their household items use. It serves as a starting point to making a home or business more energy efficient. Owners of single family homes, two flats, condos and town homes are eligible for free energy assessments. Even renters are eligible if the property owners agree to have one performed The new state law calling for getting at least 25 percent of energy from renewable sources by 2025 includes a substantial increase in solar electrical production. Currently less than 100 megawatts of solar installations exist in Illinois. By 2023 nearly 20 times that capacity could be installed in the state. Some concern has been expressed regarding achieving that substantial an increase. Toward that end, organizations such as the Sierra Club, Illinois Citizens Utility Board and other nonprofit organizations have been explaining the opportunities available to citizens to benefit from the energy efficiency and renewable energy incentives available in the state.
Illinois’ goal of 25 percent of renewable energy by 2025 is likely to be exceeded by an even more ambitious goal. Governor elect JB Pritzker promises to put Illinois on a path toward 100 percent clean, renewable energy and assure that every community justly benefits during this transition. While no date for achieving the 100 percent renewable energy goal is indicated, judging by the concerns raised in the latest IPCC report an aggressive reduction in global carbon emissions needs to be well under way by 2030 to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. Minnesota faces a similar challenge in attempting to meet a goal of 10 percent solar by 2030 since now only about 1.2 percent of their electrical generation is provided by solar. It represents a 10-fold increase over a longer time span than the Illinois goal. A recent study by the Center for Energy and the Environment along with the Great Plains Institute and Clean Power Research conducted for the state Department of Commerce and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy reports that Minnesota can economically secure 70 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2050. The results of the Minnesota study could provide a model to influence Illinois energy policy. While the justification for expanding renewable energy resources in Illinois is primarily based on concerns over climate change, other environmental challenges beyond those of cleaner sources of energy need to be addressed. Although renewable energy expansion is a desirable goal, it alone is unlikely to lead to a sustainable society. R.

Mr. Green Car
Winter driving advice By Allen Penticoff Columnist
With an early arrival of winter this November and a few inches of snow, it is time for us auto writers to bring out many of the old things that come up every year for winter driving advice. In this column I’ll bring together some themes I’ve written about separately at length – but briefly this time. Tires – having good tires and proper inflation is the most important thing you can do for your car to get through the winter safely. Firstly, check or have your tires checked for adequate tread depth. Waiting until the wear bars show is far too late for winter driving. If you are going to need new tires anyway, may as well get them before the snow gets deep. They won’t be any cheaper – and may well save you an accident or getting seriously stuck somewhere on the worst weather day of the year. I have long advocated, and use myself, “winter” tires. The difference in performance in snow is amazing. Stopping distances are much shorter. Cornering and acceleration are much better too. It can be like adding four-wheel-drive to a two-wheel-drive car. The problem with winter tires is that they are noisy and wear out quickly on dry pavement. Most drivers who use them have them mounted on a separate set of wheels so they can easily change between seasons. I am facing this dilemma myself right now. My 2002 Suburban with two-wheel drive has worn tires that do poorly even in rain, much less snow. But I don’t really want to buy a set of wheels for it, plus the cost of winter tires, as I’m not expecting to keep it much longer - although I know this would be best. So I am considering getting better quality “All Season Truck Tires.” I
read reviews at TireRack.com and check on prices. The reviews mean a lot to me, and although there are negative reviews of every tire, I sort of read between the lines for details. In my case the Michelin Defender LTX M/S (mud/snow) tire at $180.99 that costs about $50 per tire more than lower end tires, seems like a good compromise between spending $130 per tire for summer tires, and another $130 or so per tire for winter tires. I’ll be able to get by in the snow, but not as well as if I’d gone all the way. Beware that nearly all tires are now called “all season.” Many reviews indicate they are often terrible in snow and sometimes even rain. Consumer Reports has tire categories of: all-season; ultra-high-performance all-season; performance all-season; winter/snow; performance winter/snow; all-season SUV; all-season truck and all-terrain truck tires in their 2019 Buying Guide. Paying more does not necessarily mean better. Many of the lower priced brands put out a very nice tire and can be a good value. I drive on them myself. Shop carefully. If you start driving and the steering wheel starts shaking or vibrating badly – stop someplace safe and check to see if snow has accumulated on the outside and inside of the wheel rim. Clear it out and see if that’s the cure. Clean out all the wheels before you drive while clearing the windows if there is obvious accumulation. Batteries – again, if your battery is getting old or weak, change it out now before it fails you at an inconvenient time. ALL auto parts stores will test your battery for free. If you have an older vehicle, you might check that the battery terminals are clean. Most newer cars and batteries have side terminals and sealed batteries, so the
problem of corroded terminals is a thing of the past. Tune Ups – those are things of the past as well. It once was recommended before winter. A new set of spark plugs never hurts, but most newer cars have nothing to “tune up.” Beware the mechanic that says you need one unless your car is running poorly or has a lot of miles – then by all means get it running right. Fuel – keep the gas tank full, or at least half full all the time. The extra weight helps with traction and the extra gas may well keep you warm if you get stranded. If you do get off into a ditch and decide to stay with the vehicle, be sure the exhaust is clear of snow – and crack a window open for fresh air. Be sure to have winter appropriate clothes in the car even if you don’t think you will need them. Old school is to have blankets with you as well. Personally, I’ve never bothered with that or carrying a shovel either. I am not a big fan of warming up engines before driving. The engines and lubricants now permit driving off in any temperature as soon as the engine is started. Although I’d maybe warm up a bit if a high-speed drive is going to happen right away. Vehicles running to stay warm/warm up not only pollute the air but are a frequent target of thieves. If your windows are fogging up - check that the ventilation is set for fresh air (and snow is clear from the fresh air inlet, usually at the back edge of the hood). If it is on recycled cabin air, your warm moist breath will just fog up or freeze on the inside of the windows. Running the air-conditioner briefly with the defroster will help get rid of the fog quickly. Scrape off all the snow and ice from your windows so you can see. Makes sense
doesn’t it – but we’ve all seen folks driving around looking through a peephole scraped in the windshield. If you intend to keep your vehicle for many years – I highly recommend washing it more in the winter than in the summer. Every time it gets road salt on it, have it washed off, especially underneath where the most important parts of the car like brake lines live – and rot. Whenever I wash a car – even at a drive through car wash, I bring along towels to wipe down the inside door seals and bottom edges. I’ve seen so many folks lovingly wipe down the outside of their car in the winter – only to ignore the areas that will rust first and devalue their vehicle. I hose down under the hood too, but that takes some mechanical discretion as to where to point the spray. Most newer cars are pretty well inured to water under the hood, so I spray fresh water liberally to keep the salt off. Lastly - some admonitions about winter driving. First, no vehicle stops well in snow and ice. Let off the gas early and coast up to a stop. Don’t wait to hit the brakes and start sliding around! Likewise, you can’t take off like normal either unless you have all-wheel drive and winter tires. Plan more space for pulling out into traffic. Be in less of a rush – just because you have all-wheel drive does not make you immune to slippery conditions. Plenty end up in the ditch. I rather like winter driving. I enjoy the extra challenge at times. My wife and I will go shopping or to a movie on a snowy night that has encouraged everyone else to stay home. Heck, we live in Northern Illinois, this is just part of life here. We get prepared for it. Then enjoy it. Drive safe and have a great holiday season. R.

Thanksgiving viewing By Paula Hendrickson Contributor
While my extended family and I will spend Thanksgiving gathered together playing ridiculously silly (and sometimes embarrassing) board games, eating way more food than any humans should, making fresh evergreen wreaths, and laughing until our faces hurt – with nary a TV in sight – millions of families incorporate the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and back-to-back football games into the holiday. Some even spend the day planning their Black Friday shopping strategies. But this year there are a lot of non-football, non-parade Thanksgiving Day
marathons running for those who have a little down time while the turkey cooks and before your guests arrive. One of the strangest programming blocks I’ve noticed has to be BBC America’s “Chimpsgiving,” which consists of nature programming culminating with the documentaries Chimp Sanctuary and Chimps of the Lost Gorge (at 8 and 9 p.m. CT, respectively). Thanksgiving Day is a great day to run marathons of popular shows. Here are just a few to note: Gilmore Girls on UpTV; The Office on Comedy Central; The Andy Griffith Show on TVLand; The Simpsons on FXX; TBS has a series of mini-marathons
including Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, and Friends; and CNN is planning a 12-hour marathon of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. Of course, urgent breaking news could preempt CNN’s plans. Honestly, you can turn on almost any cable channel and find back-to-back-toback episodes of something you like. If you’re a fan of Fixer Upper or House Hunters, turn on HGTV and you’ll probably find one or the other. If heartwarming reality shows are more your speed, TLC has a 12-hour block of Long Lost Family. One show I didn’t notice among all of the marathons? How I Met Your Mother, the show that originated the phrase
“Slapsgiving.” Of course it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving if Lifetime and Hallmark Channel weren’t airing blocks of their own original Christmas movies. You say you prefer classic films? The Godfather trilogy starts at 8 a.m. CT on AMC, and Sundance will be repeating Gone With the Wind all day on Thanksgiving. While all these are fun options to football, I hope each and every one of you is fortunate enough to spend at least part of your Thanksgiving Day with friends or family. If that’s not possible for you this year, hopefully you can at least relax and watch something entertaining. R.

5 Tips & Tricks about Stroll on State By Elizabeth Miller Rockford Area CVB
We’re just over a week away from Stroll on State, presented by Illinois Bank & Trust, so I hope you’re getting excited! Since I’ve been involved with Stroll since the first year 6 years ago, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks about the event. Whether you’re planning on attending Stroll on State for the first time this year, or you haven’t missed a year yet, take a look at these 5 tips & tricks to make sure you’re prepared for the event!
Where Should I Park?
Finding parking downtown during any big event can seem daunting. But I’m here to tell you that you have nothing to worry about! The biggest piece of advice I can give is this: take a FREE shuttle to the event! Skip the hassle of even looking for street parking (which might end up being really far from the event anyway) and opt for taking the shuttle from one of the three shuttle locations. You can pick up a shuttle from the YMCA downtown (200 Y Blvd.), Heartland Community Church (1280 S. Alpine Rd.), or Illinois Bank & Trust (4048 E. State St.). Shuttles start running at 2 p.m. and run continuously all day until 9:30 p.m. The beauty of the shuttle bus is that it drops you off right inside the Stroll grounds! Goodbye walking long distances to the event in the cold! There are also handicapped paratransit buses at the YMCA shuttle locations for those who need it. A big thanks to Rockford Mass Transit District for sponsoring the shuttles!
Parade Preparation
Stroll on State’s Merry & Bright Holiday Parade (sponsored by The Power Connection – IBEW 364 & NECA) is going to be even bigger and better than last year. I’m talking floats, marching bands, characters, Santa…and HUGE festive balloons! The parade starts at 3 p.m. and is one event not to be missed the day of Stroll, so
Stroll on State 2017 make sure you’re prepared. First, just like in any parade, make sure you stake out your spot early. Any spot along the parade route is prime viewing area, but if you have a specific spot in mind you want to watch, make sure you start hanging out there in plenty of time. Another way to be prepared is to make sure you’re ready for the candy! Bring a bag or a coat with really big pockets so you have storage for the gobs of candy you’re bound to get.
Write to Santa
When I was a kid, my sisters and I loved writing our Christmas wish lists to Santa, and on Christmas morning, we usually got a little note back from him! Kids at Stroll on State can have this same magical moment at Letters to Santa inside City Hall (sponsored by FurstStaffing/ FurstProfessionals). There will be paper provided where kids can write there lists, and then drop them off in the special mail box that goes straight to the North Pole! Make sure you include return addresses though, because Santa will write back to everyone who writes to him!
Littlest Family Members
In the last year, I was lucky enough to become an aunt to a niece and nephew! The holidays are extra special now with the additions of the little ones, so events like Stroll on State are even more fun when you have babies and kids to enjoy it with! We know that bringing babies can seem intimidating to parents, grandparents and friends, but we want to let you know that we welcome guests of all ages! And when the time comes that babies need to be changed, nursed, or maybe just take a break from the cold or crowd, parents can visit the Nordlof Center where there is a designated area for babies to be changed, nursed, or calmed down.
Tree Lighting Ceremony
It’s no secret that the highlight of Stroll on State is the tree lighting! It really is a magical moment – guests all gather together, sing songs, count down to the tree lighting, and then watch the fireworks burst over the Rock River. It really is an experience to be in the middle of the crowd
to watch the tree lighting, but if you get a little claustrophobic or feel like you need a little more space, I’ll tell you a secret… the tree lighting looks just as magical from down the street or even across the river! If you’re feeling too crowded right in front of the tree, view the tree lighting from the side of the tree on Wyman Street! And just a word of advice, if you’re on the west side of the river during the tree lighting, plan on staying on the west side for a little while after so the crowd can disperse. You can still go to the indoor SantaLand, ride the horse & wagons, sip on hot chocolate, shop at Frosty’s Merry Market and more all on that side of the river. (The tree lighting ceremony begins at 5:45 p.m. with the actual lighting of the tree and fireworks at 6:15 p.m.) There you have it! I hope this helps you plan your Stroll on State experience a little. If you need more information or want to see what events and attractions will be at the event, visit www.strollonstate.com. We’ll see you in downtown Rockford on November 24!

The Rockford IceHogs slipped to fourth place in the standings last week after dropping three straight games on the road. The first loss came Nov. 14, when the club fell to Grand Rapids 3-1 in the Griffins’ School Day Game. Collin Delia logged 31 saves in the losing effort, which extended his save total to a league-high of 330. Jacob Nilsson scored the lone goal for Rockford. It was a nifty play, he grabbed a Nathan Noel pass and slammed it in top shelf to beat Grand Rapids goaltender Patrik Rybar. Friday night in Austin, Rockford fell victim to a third-period scoring onslaught as the Texas Stars exploded for four unanswered goals to drop the IceHogs 5-1. Jordan Schroeder scored Rockford’s goal, his first since returning from injury. After the teams skated into the second intermission with a goal apiece, Texas defenseman Taylor Fedun threw a long shot from the point at a screened Collin Delia to start the big Stars’ period. Travis Morin, Samuel Laberge and Colton Hargrove closed out the scoring. A 2-1 nail-biter marked Satuday’s contest in San Antonio. Rookie goaltender Kevin Lankinen kept the IceHogs in the game and stopped 19 shots in search of his first AHL win. Instead, he suffered his second loss in three starts with the ‘Hogs. Rockford and San Antonio played scoreless hockey for nearly two full stanzas before the Rampage’s Austin Poganski broke the silence. Nilsson responded with a power-play goal with 1:55 remaining in

the second period. With 9:07 left in the third, Adam Musil sealed the contest for San Antonio, beating Lankinen stick-side. Jordan Binnington slammed the door on Rockford from there to preserve the victory. “We’ve got to play down in (our opponent’s) end a lot more,” Rockford coach Derek King said. “We seem to be trying to make plays that are not there. We did some good things, but we still have a lot to clean up.” R.
NOTES
Lucas Carlsson finished the week as Rockford’s lone skater with more than one point. The rookie defenseman tallied a pair of assists last week and has now found the scoresheet in five of his last seven contests. Rockford enters Week 7 with the fourth-best penalty kill in the AHL with an efficiency of 86.1 percent, and have allowed the eighth-fewest power-play goals (11) in the league. Rockford has scored just one goal in each of its last three games since Nov. 14, and has been held to one or no goals in eight of 18 total games during the 2018-19 season. Forward Matthew Highmore underwent successful surgery on Nov. 13 to repair an injured right shoulder and is expected to miss four to six months.

Full steam ahead: Bears control their own destiny, this time with staying power BY ROBERT ZEGLINSKI CONTRIBUTOR
When the Bears traded for Khalil Mack in early September, you knew the facelift was going to change the complexion of their future. You understood that the move would be remembered in NFL annals as one of the most shocking, galvanizing trades in professional sports history. What you couldn’t properly ascertain was the extent as to which the Bears’ future had changed, and whether the Mack trade would be more remembered for the deal itself, or his actual impact on turning his new team into a championship contender. 12 weeks later, and we have a definitive answer: the Bears have arrived, are relevant, and will likely feature in the NFL’s postseason picture and more. After a scintillating 25-20 win over the Vikings on Sunday night, there’s no other reasonable conclusion for a rambunctious team sitting in an advantageous 7-3 position with six weeks left on the docket. That’s after a result where the Bears socked the reigning NFC North champions in Minnesota in the mouth, and never received retribution in return because of how relentless they were. Thanks to the addition of Mack and the steadying modern presence of a head coach in Matt Nagy, these Bears are here to stay. They’ve booked their hotel room among the NFL’s elite, and they plan on extending their stay for quite awhile. Why not get comfortable? They have everything going for them. It’s time to live a life of luxury. A tension-filled but resounding victory over the previous

class of the Bears’ division enlightened as much. It was all the information we needed to know how good and how real these Bears are. “We grew stronger,” Nagy said in his Monday press conference of the unifying experience for his team. “We became closer in so many ways.” That’s what happens when the Bears finally meet expectations. Nay. When the Bears exceed all preordained expectations and are now capable of dreaming big and reaching for the stars of the NFC. Anything is possible when talent, discipline, and chemistry work in beautiful, synchronized harmony. “I wanted them to soak it all in and have that feeling,” Nagy said. What was previously impossible in a playo berth for the Bears, will now be disappointing if it doesn’t come to fruition. A team riding high on it’s first four-game winning streak since 2012 has loftier goals than just making it into the dance. They’ve been taking some classes and want to show o their moves after an extended (seven-year) absence. What was previously impossible in Pro Bowl berths and national recognition galore, now has NFL pundits all around taking notice of the core of the Bears have built. It’s not just Mack in this bunch. It’s Eddie Jack son - who had a game-winning pick-six against the Vikings - that is increasingly becoming one of the most terrifying defensive backs for quarterbacks to deal with. It’s Akiem Hicks who decided to impose his will on the Minnesota oensive line as long as he
felt like it. Spoiler alert: he felt like it the entire night. It’s Leonard Floyd, finally living up to expectations of a versatile and beyond talented former first-round pick. The names and lists could go on and on and it’s not because the Bears are overachieving through any stretch of the imagination. It’s because there’s a belief in their process. They know what they’re capable of. They understand how long it took and the amount of work involved in becoming this prominent of a contender again. They’re not about to waste a precious opportunity. One could argue this hungry team is still improving, waiting for another primetime moment to show o in front of the entire country. The last time the Bears started a season 7-3, it was the beginning of the end for the Brian Urlacher and Lovie Smith era. A team that started the season 7-1 overall would lose five of it’s last eight games in a deflating and flawed collapse at all levels. A disappointing end to a revitalizing era. The year before that, the Bears started 7-3 on the heels of a five-game winning streak. Their optimism didn’t last long as a Jay Cutler broken thumb in the midst of that seventh victory over the Chargers ended a promising season before it only had just begun. Caleb Hanie a prominent black mark of a name in the context of Bears’ quarterbacking failure as Chicago would lose five of it’s last six games. Two flawed Bears rosters and philosophies both failing in spectacular but crushing fashion. There’s something dierent about these revitalized Bears, and it isn’t just
the talent. There’s unity and energy in every phase. Everyone is playing for each other, with each other, and having fun doing it. Everyone’s on the same page, with nary a stray soldier or mind in the ranks as focus hasn’t been this high on the lakefront since, oh, 12 years ago. The Bears’ process has merit, and there’s a strong foundation as to what the Ryan Pace-Matt Nagy Bears can do both in the short term and long term. The league’s best defense in a surplus of categories and an oense that still hasn’t completely broken through says as much. Who’s going to stand in their way? If the Bears win out the rest of their schedule - unlikely, but certainly possible if you’ve been paying attention - they will have earned a first-round bye in the NFC. An unthinkable proposition to utter a mere three months ago, but that’s the state of aairs in this meteoric rise for the Bears. They keep breaking through the metaphorical ceiling while everyone around them exasperatingly asks, “how much higher?” At this blistering pace, everything is up in the air for the Bears, in a good way. They can clearly accomplish anything they put their mind to. One step at a time. It’s on to Detroit and a very thankful Thanksgiving Bears showcase at a million miles per hour. “We’re sending home the message of ‘here we go’,” Nagy said Monday. “We’re right back at it.” R.
