What’s Local: Thrive Cafe opens downtown location By Jim Hagerty Reporter

ROCKFORD – Thrive Cafe is now officially part of the downtown community. Well, almost. The popular health-conscience eatery started a soft opening for “Thrive Cafe On the Go,” at 326 E. State St., Thursday. “We haven’t really told anybody but we already have people coming in,” Owner Jason Rager said. “We know they will put it on social media. So, Monday we are going to blast it out there.” A 15-year fitness instructor, Rager founded Thrive Cafe in 2015 inside Peak Sports Club on Perryville Road after creating protein smoothies, grab-and-go

meals and cold-pressed juices to connect his clients with nutritious foods. He opened his first storefront in 2017 at 731 Broadcast Parkway. Thrive On the Go offers a full juice bar and packaged food, some prepared at the Loves Park location and some downtown. “We don’t have a hood down here so we aren’t preparing any of our hot bowls,” Rager said. “But we have our ‘Grab ‘n Gos.’ Those can be either heated at work or heated at your house. We have all of our salads, Overnight Oats, and our muffins.” Other downtown menu items include a variety of Thrive favorite like chia pudding, wraps, smoothies and peanut butter balls.

Depending on how things go, Rager said he may remodel in the future to accommodate a full kitchen at the new location. “We like this area,” Rager said. “We like the building.” Thrive is located in the space formerly occupied by Bath & Body Fusion, which consolidated its operation to the adjacent storefront at 324 E. State St. The businesses announced the move earlier this year. “Both companies thrive off of their commitment to fresh, quality ingredients,” Bath & Body Fusion owner Jennifer Ralston and Rager said in a joint release in April. “The two fusing together will allow the Rockford community to feel their beauty from the inside out.”

Black Friday

Black Friday: Half of holiday shoppers have already started Staff Report

WASHINGTON - More than half of consumers have already started their holiday shopping and nearly a quarter of purchases have already been made, according to the annual survey released today by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. “This is further evidence that the holiday season has grown far beyond the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Thanksgiving is still a hallmark of the season, and there’s billions of dollars in shopping still to come. But many consumers have already been shopping for weeks, and retailers are increasingly adapting to that.” The survey found 56% of consumers asked during the first week of November had already begun their holiday shopping, about the same as the past few years. That was up from 48% who had already started at the same point a decade ago. On average, consumers had completed 24%of their shopping, the highest level in the history of the survey and up from 16%in 2009. Only 4% had finished shopping. Those numbers are even higher than an earlier NRF survey that found 39%of holiday shoppers planned to start before November this year, saying they wanted to spread out their budgets and avoid both crowds and last-minute stress. Another 43% planned to start in November, and

only 18% said they would wait until December. “Consumers don’t wait for Thanksgiving or Black Friday anymore and neither do retailers,” Prosper Executive Vice President of Strategy Phil Rist said. “Retailers responded this year by offering promotions earlier than ever, with some rolling out holiday deals even before Halloween.” NRF defines the holiday season as November 1 through December 31 and has forecast that sales will total between $727.9 and $730.7 billion. Consumers expect to spend an average $1,047.83 – including purchases made earlier – for an increase of 4% over last year, according to NRF’s annual survey released in October. There are only 26 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, down six days from last year and the shortest number possible, but NRF does not expect that to make a difference in spending given the number of people who begin shopping earlier. Even with many consumers shopping earlier, NRF estimates that 165.3 million people will shop in stores and online from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday, drawn by good deals, tradition and the social aspects of spending time with friends and family. Similar to recent years, clothing and accessories are the top gift category this year, purchased by 58% of those surveyed,

followed by gift cards (54%), toys (39%), books/music/movies/video games (37%) and food/candy (32%). Consumers plan to purchase three or four gift cards on average at an average $47 per card for a total of $27.5 billion. The top reasons for giving a gift card are that it allows the recipient to choose their own gift (46%,) and is easier and faster than choosing a traditional gift (29%). Restaurant cards are the most popular, chosen by 35%, followed by those for department stores (30%), coffee shops (23%,, Visa/Mastercard/American Express/Discover (also 23%) and entertainment such as movies or music (18%). Barbie remains the top toy for girls this year, followed by dolls, LOL Surprise dolls, American Girl items and LEGO. For boys, LEGO tops the list followed by cars and trucks, Hot Wheels, video games and Paw Patrol. Credit cards remain the top form of payment at 42% followed by debit cards (37%) and cash (19%). Forty-four percent of holiday shoppers plan to use alternative payment systems, with 32% saying they will use PayPal, 10% Apple Pay, 7% Google Pay, and 5% each Samsung Pay and Venmo. The survey of 7,917 adult consumers was conducted October 31 through November 6 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points.

Esper says Trump ordered him to stop SEAL review board BY ROBERT BURNS ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) – Defense Secretary Mark Esper declared on Monday that President Donald Trump ordered him to stop a disciplinary review of a Navy SEAL accused of battlefield misconduct, an intervention that raised questions about America’s commitment to international standards for battlefield ethics. Esper, who initially favored allowing the Navy to proceed with a peer-review board for Chief Petty Ocer Edward Gallagher, which could have resulted in him losing his SEAL status, said he was obliged to follow Trump’s order. But he also directed the Pentagon’s legal oce to review how service members are educated in the laws of armed conflict and trained to wartime behavioral standards. “I can control what I can control,” Esper told reporters when asked whether Trump sent the right message to U.S. troops by intervening to stop the Gallagher review. “The president is the commander in chief. He has every right, authority and privilege to do what he wants to do.” Gallagher was acquitted of murder in the stabbing death of an Islamic State militant captive but convicted by a military jury of posing with the corpse while in Iraq in 2017. In yet another twist to the Gallagher saga, Esper also made an extraordinary accusation against Richard V. Spencer, whom he fired on Sunday as the civilian leader of the Navy. Esper said Spencer last week had gone behind his back to propose a secret deal with the White House in which Spencer would fi x the outcome of the Gallagher review. Esper said this was a violation of the military chain of command and that Spencer acknowledged his misstep. Through a Navy spokesman, Spencer declined requests for comment on Esper’s allegation. However, in a resignation letter Sunday he had said he could not in good conscience follow an order that he believed would undermine the principle of good order and discipline in the military – suggesting that he had been ordered to stop the peer-review process for Gallagher. Earlier this month, Trump restored Gallagher’s rank, which had been reduced in his military jury conviction. Trump also pardoned two soldiers -- a former Army special forces soldier set to stand trial next year in the killing of a suspected Afghan bombmaker in 2010 and an Army ocer who had been convicted of murder for ordering his soldiers to fire on three unarmed Afghan men in 2012, killing two. B e yond t he Sp encer f i r i ng, t he

Gallagher case has raised questions about the appropriate role of a U.S. president in matters of military justice. Esper said Trump had a constitutional right to intervene, but others worry that such actions undermine the credibility of American claims to be a leader in ethical and lawful behavior on the battlefield. “What concerns me the most is the chilling eect this will have on special forces’ willingness to report when they see illegal behavior,” James Stavridis, a retired Navy admiral, said in an email to The Associated Press. “That is tragic because in the end what separates us from our opponents on the battlefield is our willingness to follow the rule of law.” Sen. Jack Reed, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee and an Army veteran, accused Trump of “inappropriate involvement” in the military justice system. “The White House’s handling of this matter erodes the basic command structure of the military and the basic function of the Uniform Code of Military Justice,” Reed said. Carl Tobias, a law professor at the Universit y of R ichmond School of Law, said Trump’s action undercut the military. “We want to be a standard for the world in terms of rule of law,” he said. “I’m concerned that it undermines our own military; it undermines our standing in the world.” Trump has said Gallagher was treated unfairly by the Navy. “I think what I’m doing is sticking up for our armed forces,” he said Monday. “There’s never been a president who is going to stick up for them and has like I have.” Last week Trump tweeted that Gallagher must be allowed to retire as a SEAL, regardless of the Navy’s intention to review his standing in the elite force. Esper’s comments Monday revealed that on Sunday Trump had given the defense secretary a direct order to make this happen. Even before receiving that order, however, Esper had decided the Gallagher process should be stopped. He said his rationale was that, “given the events of the last few days,” it was no longer possible for Gallagher to get a fair shake. “As professional as they are,” he said of the Navy review board members, “no matter what they would decide, they would be criticized from many sides, which would further drag this issue on, dividing the institution. I want the SEALs and the Navy to move beyond this now, fully focused on their warfighting mission.”

In announcing Sunday that he had dismissed Spencer, Esper said he acted after learning of Spencer’s secret plan to “guarantee” in advance the outcome of the review board that was to convene next week. Spencer had “proposed a deal whereby if the president allowed the Navy to handle the case, he would guarantee that Eddie Gallagher would be restored to rank, allowed to retain his Trident and permitted to retire,” Esper said Monday. This was “completely contrary” to what Esper and the rest of the Pentagon leadership had agreed to, he said, and contrary to Spencer’s public position that the Navy disciplinary process should be allowed to play out with no interference. Esper said he had previously advocated for allowing the Navy review to go forward. But when Trump gave him a “verbal instruction” to stop the process, he did so. Esper did not say explicitly that he disagreed with Trump’s order. Once Trump gave the order, Esper said he responded, “Roger. I got it.”

FEDERAL RESERVE

Jerome meets Jasmine: Fed chief observes economic struggles BY CHRISTOPHER RUGABER ASSOCIATED PRESS

EAST HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) – Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell normally spends his days in the marble halls of Washington, meeting with senators and Fed economists. On Monday, he learned about the job market from an 18-year-old named Jasmine. A recent high school graduate, Jasmine Ayala explained to Powell how she has just landed a good job as a laser operator at aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney: After graduation, she received seven weeks of training, backed by a grant from a local nonprofit called East Hartford CONNects. “It was an amazing opportunity,” Ayala said. Her exchange with the chairman of the world’s most powerful central bank came during a visit Powell paid Monday to a hardscrabble neighborhood of East Hartford. The trip included a neighborhood tour and a meeting with residents to get an up-front look at their challenges. Monday’s events are part of an ongoing outreach by the Powell Fed to representatives of labor unions, educators and community development groups. Many participants have told Fed ocials that despite entrenched poverty in some areas of the country, more disadvantaged Americans are finally finding jobs and making economic progress. One major reason for that is the existence of training programs like the one that helped Ayala. Since becoming chairman nearly two years ago, Powell has sent a message seldom heard from his predecessors: That the Fed should consider the struggles of the lowest-income Americans in setting its interest-rate policies. Low interest rates generally help sustain a solid job market, which, in

A 7-WEEK PROGRAM FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR QUALIFIED PARTICIPANTS NIMS CREDENTIALS

turn, can encourage job training eorts. As unemployment has reached a nearly a 50-year low of 3.6%, more employers are taking more chances on young people without college degrees and are training them. “We try to create a strong labor market, but for some it’s not enough,” Powell said after residents told of vital help they have received from East Hartford CONNects, including child-support assistance that allowed them to re-enter the job market. “They need to be given a chance.” The notion that the Fed should try to sustain the expansion to help the most disadvantaged people might seem self-evident. But throughout its history, the Fed, whose mandate is to stabilize prices and maximize employment, has rarely expressed the need to suit its policies to benefit the least fortunate. With unemployment low, most of Powell’s predecessors would have focused on the threat of high inflation and the possibility of raising rates to forestall it. The prevailing belief has been that addressing economic inequality or poverty is the purview of Congress, not the Fed. “What I sense is dierent is that he sees those benefits (to workers) as so important that he is less willing to lose those benefits to quell phantom inflation,” said Tim Duy, an economist at the University of Oregon. Powell still says the Fed’s main focus is the health of the job market and the stability of prices. But as he nears the end of his second year as chairman, he has increasingly opened the door to the idea that the Fed can also lift up those who still struggle years after an economic expansion has boosted the fortunes of most Americans. One driver of that change has been the outreach eort the Fed launched a year ago as part of a review of its financial tools and strategy. In August, at an annual gathering

of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Powell began his speech by observing how the U.S. economic expansion – the longest on record – was finally benefiting working people, through higher pay and more plentiful job opportunities. His speech took some economists by surprise. “It is almost inconceivable that Powell’s predecessors would have begun an important talk on monetary policy this way,” Dean Baker, an economist at the progressive Center for Economic and Policy Research, later wrote in a column that called Powell a “Labor Day hero.” “Powell has explicitly made the plight of the poor and working class part of the Fed’s agenda,” Baker wrote. Janet Yellen, Powell’s immediate predecessor, had begun to raise these issues during her tenure. At the 2016 Jackson Hole conference, some of Yellen’s deputies met with members of “Fed Up,” an organization that advocates for low rates to support economic growth and hiring. But Stephanie Aaronson, director of economic studies at the Brookings Institution and a former Fed economist, said Powell has linked Fed policy more explicitly to issues like inequality. Ben Bernanke, who preceded Yellen as Fed chair, spoke about economic inequality, but his stated remedies were in areas outside the Fed’s reach, like education and job training. And in the past when Fed ocials would meet with community groups, they tended to discuss issues that only indirectly help the economically disadvantaged – fairness in bank lending, for example. The Fed’s current outreach “is actually about monetary policy – and that does make it really dierent from the usual types of interactions that the Fed has

with community groups,” Aaronson said. Aaronson co-authored research this spring that found that a persistently low unemployment rate can significantly narrow employment gaps between whites and African-Americans and Latinos. Her research also found that the narrowing of that gap accelerated as unemployment fell further. In East Hartford’s school system, nearly half the students are Latino. Chela Gage, director of talent acquisition at Pratt & Whitney, which is based in East Hartford, said the persistence of low unemployment has led the company to think more creatively about hiring. “We are stretching our arms to see where the talent lies,” she said. Ayala was working part time while still in high school, applying make-up at weddings and other events for $10.10 an hour. That income helped her family, and she wasn’t sure she could have given it up for training without the stipend she received. Her new job at Pratt & Whitney pays $29 an hour. She’s also attending school at night to earn her bachelor’s degree. “Things don’t happen unless you work hard,” she said. J.W. Mason, an assistant professor at John Jay College, said that Fed ocials haven’t often acknowledged that their policies have varying consequences for dierent socioeconomic groups. Many economists have long argued, for example, that when the Fed raises rates to try to stop prices from accelerating, it risks hindering the kind of robust job market that disproportionately helps disadvantaged workers. “It’s not just about the whole economy,” Mason said. “It’s about who’s benefiting. It’s always been true, but people didn’t want to acknowledge it.”

Crime

The Veronica Blumhorst Case, Part 6:

Big Bureau Creek and a camouflage SUV Editor’s note: The following is the sixth installment in a series about the disappearance of 21-yearold Veronica Blumhorst, who vanished Sept. 20, 1990, after finishing her shift at a Mendota, Illinois, grocery store. Her car was found in her garage less than a mile away and it is believed she had only $10 on her when she vanished.

By Jim Hagerty Reporter

MENDOTA - While Veronica Blumhorst is still officially listed as missing person, new information suggests the case should be a homicide investigation. Since Blumhorst disappeared without a trace more than 29 years ago, several theories have emerged. Did she secretly leave town in search of her birth parents without first picking up her paycheck? Did Veronica mean Mendota when she reportedly told a colleague she had to “get out of here”? Or, was she, as some suspect, picked up by someone she knew, killed and dumped somewhere? Some say the latter is not only the case, but that Veronica’s remains have likely been right in law enforcement’s back yard this whole time. A source The Times talked to said a September 2014 search of the Lee County

Water and Soil Conservation District’s Bartlett Woods Nature Preserve that turned up nothing was not expansive enough. It focused on a small area northeast of Knox Road between Henkel Road and Big Bureau Creek, about three miles from the town of Sublette, Illinois. The effort, which included a small amount of digging, followed two 2013 searches by cadaver dog teams hired by Veronica’s brother, Todd, who has since died from cancer. The source says had police continued west, they would have likely found clues about 475 to 500 yards downstream near a creek belly that’s about 10 to 12 feet deep. “I cannot say within feet, but she’s either in the belly of the creek before the 90-degree bend, or around the area of the hay bales next to it, possibly even under them,” the source said. “If they search in that area, they would either find her remains in the water or some sign of her buried near there.” The source, who does not wish to be identified, would not say how this information was gleaned only that there is strong reason to believe Veronica was strangled, possibly shot, wrapped in a blue tarp and dumped over the west side

of a metal bridge on Knox Road near Bartlett Woods. Blumhorst family spokesman Doug Truckenbrod said he reviewed the latest information and cannot find any reason police should ignore it. “If the source agrees to work with police, the search should be expanded with the source giving direction,” Truckenbrod said. “I trust the source. The faith in the Mendota Police Department was lost 29 years ago.”

a Woodhaven vehicle in Mendota, Truckenbrod said he wasn’t alarmed at the time. He wasn’t thinking about Veronica Blumhorst. He had no reason. Nobody knew she was missing until late morning Sept. 20. Then came a statement by Veronica’s boyfriend that he may have picked her up in a van or a truck and hurt her. Truckenbrod also learned another fact about the case. “I was talking to my mom about the boyfriend and she mentioned his dad and that he was head of security at Woodhaven,” Truckenbrod said of the 1990 conversation. “I about fell off my chair. I immediately called the Mendota Police Department and (Investigator John) Pakenham came up and took a report about what I saw.” After speaking to Veronica’s boyfriend, police searched his family’s Sublette property and found no signs of her. An extensive search that included dozens of volunteers and nearby fire and rescue teams also turned up nothing. Anyone with information about the disappearance of Veronica Blumhorst i s u r ge d to cont ac t t he Mendot a Police Department at 815-539-9331 and mendotapd@mendotapolice.com.

An ordinary truck?

Truckenbrod, who grew up across the street from the Blumhorsts, said he’s been immersed in the the case since the night Veronica went missing. At around 11:45 p.m., Sep. 19, 1990, Truckenbrod was on his way to his thirdshift job at RR Donnelley when he pulled into a gas station at Jefferson Street and 13th Avenue and noticed something he hadn’t seen in small-town Mendota before--an SUV with a drab camouflage paint job parked next to the building. Its other markings indicated it was a security vehicle for Woodhaven Lakes, a camping resort in Sublette, about 12 miles away. While thinking it was odd to see

tube talk

More changes to Comcast line-up By Paula Hendrickson Contributor

On rare Sunday afternoons when I don’t have cleaning or yardwork to catch up on, I often tune into Turner Classic Movies. But a few weeks ago the screen was blank, except for a message saying I needed a subscription to view TCM. I’m already a Comcast/Xfinity subscriber, and the channel had been there a week earlier, so I was confused. I called Comcast’s toll-free number – 1-800-934-6489 – and was told TCM had been moved to a premium “Sports and Entertainment” package. I could upgrade for an additional fee. No thanks. I hate sports, and already resent the expensive sports franchise fees included in my Xfinity bill. The representative offered a one-time $15 credit to my account, which I accepted. It’s not what I wanted, but better than nothing. At the same time, rumors were swirling that Comcast/Xfinity might remove STARZ from its lineup starting in December. The representative told me that was still under negotiation, so she didn’t know what would

be happening. Local Comcast subscribers have already been complaining about losing TCM to a costlier tier, but instead of relying on what a stranger on the phone says, I decided to ask Jack Segal, Regional Vice President of Communications for Comcast, to answer a few questions about the changes to the line up. Here’s what he had to say.

Where did TCM go, and what channels have been added to offset the loss of TCM?

Segal: We regularly evaluate our channel lineups and sometimes make changes to ensure we’re offering customers a variety of content, even as programming costs continue to increase significantly. Effective October 10, Turner Classic Movies moved to the Sports and Entertainment Package, a subscription-based service. As a result, customers who want to watch this channel can continue to do so if they subscribe to that package [for an additional fee]. On Sept. 10, we added the Hallmark Drama channel to our Xfinity Preferred tier. Hallmark

Drama features classic holiday movies and TV shows from the Hallmark library.

Are we going to lose STARZ, too? If so, when, and what will offset that loss?

Segal: We are continuing to negotiate to reach a deal with Starz that makes sense for us and our customers before our current deal expires, but we have been unable to do so at this time. Over the last decade, the video marketplace has evolved dramatically, with more and more streaming and direct-to-consumer offerings marketing themselves as an alternative to traditional cable. We have seen the streaming marketplace grow from essentially two services to dozens of significant over-the-top (OTT) platforms, with more launching all the time. Starz has chosen to change its business model in response to these trends by making its content available a-la-carte on Amazon Prime and Roku and selling its service direct[ly] to the consumer through the Starz app. All we are asking for is the same treatment for our customers.

Note: Starz currently is available to Xfinity Basic and up customers for an additional monthly cost on a stand-alone basis or as part of an add-on package of premium channels. We have notified our customers that Epix will replace Starz in packages of premium channels starting Dec. 10. Epix has a wide variety of movies, documentaries and an array of original series, including “Get Shorty,” “The Godfather of Harlem,” “Pennyworth” and many more.

And perhaps most importantly: Whenever channels are removed, subscribers get angry and rumors fly. What misinformation currently floating around do you want to dispel?

Segal: Yes. Customers can still access an abundance of classic movies for free via Xfinity On Demand. Say “classic TV” into the X1 Voice Remote and it will bring up numerous classic movies to choose from. (I just did it, and it came back with 1,731 free titles.).

Rockford Art Museum, Tate Modern both showcasing American abstraction From Sarah McNamara Rockford Art Museum

Rockford Art Museum (RAM) isn’t the only art museum showcasing postwar American abstraction this season. Bold Abstractions: Paintings from the Thoma Collection is on view through January 26 at RAM with free daily admission throughout the exhibition provided by support from the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation. This 15-week major exhibition, organized by Carrie Johnson, executive director/curator of Rockford Art Museum, marks the first time the couple’s significant post-war painting collection has been shown at a public institution. Bold Abstractions explores new forms of abstract painting from the 1960s, following the heyday of Abstract Expressionism, and features an international group of 33 artists associated with some of the key painting movements of the mid-20th century: Color Field, Post-Painterly Abstraction, Hard-Edge, and Op Art – including Helen Frankenthaler, a defining force in the development of American painting who has long been recognized as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. London’s famed Tate Modern museum

is also showcasing postwar American abstraction this season, with five paintings by Helen Frankenthaler currently on view – one of which recently became its first acquisition by the legendary artist, reported ARTnews this week. About the piece, Tate said in a statement the gift from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation “transforms our ability to represent postwar American abstraction, while also reflecting the vital contribution made by women artists, such as Frankenthaler, during a critical moment in art history.” Rockford Art Museum visitors can view Helen Frankenthaler’s White Makes Four in Bold Abstractions for free through January 26 at RAM, located inside the Riverfront Museum Park building at 711 North Main Street in downtown Rockford, Illinois. RAM is regularly open daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursdays 10 a.m.-7 p.m. (closed November 28, December 25). Support for Bold Abstractions: Paintings from the Thoma Collection and its related educational programming – including free daily admission to all visitors for the duration of the exhibition – is provided by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation, and partially supported by a Partners in Excellence grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Stock Market

US stocks jump to records as tech, small companies lead way By Stan Choe and Damian J. Troise Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) – A flurry of buyout deals and rising optimism about U.S.-China trade talks sent stocks back to record heights Monday, the latest bit of fuel for a market that’s been climbing since early last month. Technology stocks and smaller companies led the way after China issued new guidelines for the protection of patents and copyrights. Theft of such intellectual property has been a big sticking point in the trade war between the world’s largest economies, and markets saw China’s move as an encouraging sign for negotiations on the first phase of a deal. Not only did stocks rise worldwide, the price of gold fell as investors saw less need for safety. A measure of fear in the U.S. stock market called the VIX volatility index also touched its lowest level since July. The S&P 500 rose 23.35 points, or 0.8%, to 3,133.64. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 190.85, or 0.7%, to 28,066.47, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 112.60, or 1.3%, to 8,632.49. All three indexes set records.

The Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks rose even more, though it is still below its peak set last year. It surged 32.96, or 2.1%, to 1,621.90. Stocks have been rallying for weeks as worries about a possible U.S. recession have faded. A resilient job market, which helps households continue to spend, and three interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve have bolstered confidence. Optimism has not been as high for other economies around the world, though, where growth remains slow, said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management. “People are still nervous about the rest of the world,” he said. “All of this is sort of acting as funnel, directing cash into U.S. equities.” More clues about the resilience of U.S. consumer spending should arrive soon when retailers report on this week’s kickoff of the holiday shopping season. Economists say it needs to remain healthy given pullbacks in spending by businesses amid all the trade uncertainty.

“It’s a battle between nervous businesses and confident consumers,” Kelly said. Some companies showed confidence to spend Monday by announcing big buyout deals. Charles Schwab said it would buy rival TD Ameritrade for about $26 billion, and French luxury group LVMH agreed to pay $16.2 billion for Tiffany. Tiffany jumped 6.2% for one of the biggest gains in the S&P 500, while Schwab rose 2.3% and TD Ameritrade gained 7.6%. Technology stocks had the largest gain among the 11 sectors that make up the S&P 500, up 1.4%. Many tech companies have deep ties to China, depending on both suppliers and customers there, and their stocks prices have often swung with sentiment about trade talks. Nvidia jumped 4.9%. Utilities were the only sector in the S&P 500 to fall. Other stocks known as “defensive” investments, which tend to be in favor when the economy is slowing, also lagged the rest of the market. The upcoming week will be a short

one for investors, with trading closed on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Otherwise, highlights include reports on consumer confidence, the housing market’s strength and consumer spending. In overseas markets, the Nikkei 225 in Tokyo rose 0.8%, South Korea’s Kospi gained 1% and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong jumped 1.5%. London’s FTSE 100 climbed 0.9%, France’s CAC 40 gained 0.5% and Germany’s DAX returned 0.6%. Benchmark crude oil rose 24 cents to settle at $58.01 a barrel. Brent crude oil, the international standard, rose 26 cents to $63.65 a barrel. Wholesale gasoline was unchanged at $1.67 per gallon. Heating oil climbed 1 cent to $1.94 per gallon. Natural gas fell 14 cents to $2.53 per 1,000 cubic feet. Gold fell $6.50 to $1,456.60 per ounce, silver fell 12 cents to $16.87 per ounce and copper was unchanged at $2.65 per pound. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 1.75% from 1.77% late Friday. The dollar rose to 108.97 Japanese yen from 108.65 yen on Friday. The euro weakened to $1.1009 from $1.1020.

Museum Theft

US stocks jump to records as tech, small companies lead way By David Rising and Frank Jordans Associated Press

BERLIN (AP) – Thieves broke into Dresden’s Green Vault, one of the world’s oldest museums, early Monday morning, making off with three “priceless” sets of 18th century jewelry that German officials said would be impossible to sell on the open market. The treasury of Augustus the Strong of Saxony was established in 1723 and today contains around 4,000 objects of gold, precious stones and other materials on display in Dresden’s Royal Palace. Authorities said it appeared the thieves had broken open only one glass case containing three sets of Baroque jewelry made up of dozens of gems each. “This is a bitter day for the cultural heritage of Saxony,” the state’s interior minister, Roland Woeller, told reporters. He said the thieves “stole cultural treasures of immeasurable worth – that is, not only the material worth but also the intangible worth to the state of Saxony, which is impossible to estimate.”

Police said they have established a special investigation team, code-named ‘Epaulette’ and comprising 20 specialist officers, to solve the case. Museum officials said the sets that were stolen included intricate and dazzling brooches, buttons, buckles and other items. Green Vault director Dirk Syndram stressed that the collections in the museum have “invaluable cultural value” – particularly their completeness. “Nowhere in any other collection in Europe have jewels or sets of jewels been preserved in this form and quantity,” he said. “The value is really in the ensemble.” Police said they were alerted shortly before 5 a.m. by unarmed museum security guards who had spotted two burglars inside the downtown museum on video surveillance cameras. The first officers arrived on the scene within minutes but the thieves had already fled in a waiting getaway car, which managed to elude immediate attempts to find it in the surrounding area and on the nearby highway, Dresden police chief Joerg Kubiessa said.

Police later confirmed that an Audi A6 matching the description of the getaway car was found burned in an underground parking lot in Dresden. “It’s not just the State Art Collections that was robbed, but us Saxons,” tweeted Michael Kretschmer, the governor of Saxony, where Dresden is located. “One can’t understand the history of Saxony without the Green Vault.” Investigators suspect that a fire at an electrical junction box near the museum, which took out the streetlights at the time of the robbery, was linked to the crime, police said. The outage affected lights in front of a window through which the thieves gained entrance, somehow getting through bars and safety glass to reach the Jewel Room. Security footage released by police shows two hooded figures entering the room, then smashing open the glass case with an ax. “In total, the entire crime only took a few minutes,” police said in a statement. Dresden’s State Art Collections director, Marion Ackermann, said it was impossible to estimate the value of the items.

“We cannot give a value because it is impossible to sell,” she said, appealing to the thieves not to break the ensembles into pieces. “The material value doesn’t reflect the historic meaning.” Woeller pledged that investigators would “do everything in (their) power not only to bring the cultural treasures back, but to capture the perpetrators.” Exhibition rooms at the museum focus on treasures featuring jewels, ivory, silver and amber among other objects. One of its most famous and precious treasures, the Dresden Green Diamond, is currently on loan with other valuable pieces to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for an exhibit. The 41-carat green diamond was acquired by Augustus III, the son of Augustus the Strong, in 1742, according to the museum. The museum said the purchase cost 400,000 thalers, compared to the 288,000 thalers it cost to build Dresden’s lavish Frauenkirche church at around the same time.

Realistic expectations to meet environmental goals

Growing Sunchokes/ Jerusalem Artichokes BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

Sunchokes are a common vegetable that the University of Illinois Extension oce is asked about during vegetable production programs. While not commonly seen at local home and garden stores to grow in the backyard garden, it is a vegetable that shows up in trendy recipes from time to time. Most of it has to do with it being a very good potato substitute due to it being a tuber and a starch. Plan now and you can harvest them in time for your 2020 Thanksgiving meal. Sunchokes are in the sunflower family in which they have a similar plant structure while producing tubers underground. First cultivated by Native Americans and called Sunroots, the plant was then given the names of Jerusalem Artichoke and Sunchoke later on. There is a lot of debate as to where the name Jerusalem Artichoke comes from though we do know that the Sunchoke name was given by Frieda Caplan in the 1960s, a produce wholesaler who was trying to increase awareness of the vegetable. While Sunchokes do taste similar to an artichoke, they are not in the artichoke family. The common globe artichoke can be grown in our planting zone but require

a vernalization period, which is exposure to low temperatures. Because of this necessary step, it is not easy to grow the globe artichoke compared to other vegetables. By comparison, sunchokes are actually easy to grow. You’ll plant tubers the end of April like a potato. Plant them 2-6 inches deep and 12-18 inches apart while spacing them in rows 36 inches apart. Sunchokes need full sun and may benefit in a raised bed as they tend to spread. Sunchokes will be harvested after 110-150 days from planting which is around September/October. Sunchokes can be dug up and harvested when the leaves begin to die back. They can be sweeter following a light frost. If any tubers are left in the ground, they can regrow the following season. Potentially, you could treat sunchoke like a perennial though depends highly on our winters each year. From there, you can expect to use them like other root vegetables in your cooking. The skin is edible and does not need to be removed unless you want to. Grant McCarty is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension. His tips and tricks for local eating and your at-home garden appear every week in The Rock River Times.

We have spent our lifetimes involved in protecting the environment as teachers, consultants and authors. While many of the issues of concern remain and new ones continue to arrive what has really changed is the scope and intensity of deteriorating environmental conditions. In the 1970s the book the Limits to Growth called attention to the potential long term consequences of the ongoing growth in human population and economic development on the health of the planet and human wellbeing. Implied in their scenarios was the likelihood that life would be more dicult for humans and the planet if environmental concerns were not adequately addressed. We are in the early stages of living in those deteriorating conditions and society is attempting to address a major issue of climate change by increasing applications of energy eciency, renewable energy and increased electrification. These solutions while appealing also reinforce a commitment to economic growth. Since deteriorating environmental conditions are gradual and incremental they are dicult for many of us to recognize while society’s eorts at addressing them trail far behind what scientist determine are needed. Since the problems are so ubiquitous and widespread society’s eorts at reforms may also fail to address the full scope of the needed actions. Addressing climate change is a major focus of environmental reform advocates. Although progress is being made through the growth of eciency and renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions, the benefits continue to be oset by ongoing eorts to expand the use of fossil fuels. As climate change eorts are a focal point of current environmental concerns, other issues clamor for attention. One example is the issue of what an increasing number of scientists are referring to as the sixth mass extinction. It is defined as an epoch in which at least 75% of all species disappear from the planet. The last mass extinction occurred when a large asteroid strike wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. All the earlier mass extinctions occurred from natural disasters or a change earth’s climate. The most recent concern regarding the potential of mass extinctions is linked to the ever growing human population and the economic system supporting that growth. A wide range of human activities contribute to the loss of species. Habitat loss, over hunting, overfishing, invasive

species, pollution and climate change are some of the major factors contributing the loss of species. A global scientific review published in the Journal of Biological Conservation raised the concern that the collapse of global insect populations could lead to a collapse of ecosystems. Insects serve as food for birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. While species extinction is a natural condition, current loss rates have accelerated greatly due to human activities. It takes years to determine whether there is a trend toward species loss. For example, people we know who spend a lot of time outdoors have commented on this year’s insect observations. They noticed a dramatic increase in black flies and the increased length of their presence probably due to the excess of rain. However, the anticipated increase in mosquitos did not occur as expected from higher moisture levels. One pleasing observation was an increased presence of frogs. Another unexpected surprise was the siting of an increase in fire flies. These are merely observations and multiple years of similar observations are necessary to establish trends as reported by scientists. The decline in species reinforces the conclusions of a planet under environmental stress which in turn is likely to make human well being more stressful. Some environmental writers such as Nate Hagens suggests that we could still live well by consuming less instead of being focused on increasing consumption and accelerating economic growth. He recommends that individuals both design their lives around lower consumption, learn skills to be more independent and join with others with similar goals.

ROCKFORD - The Rockford IcHogs skated to a pair of overtime games on their short trip to Texas last weekend and returned with three points in the Central Division standings. Dylan Sikura scored with two seconds left in regulation and Jacob Nilsson registered the game winner in overtime Sunday to cap the weekend at San Antonio’s AT&T Center. Nilsson’s goal gave the IceHogs the 3-2 victory over the Rampage, their second straight against the club this season. With the IceHogs trailing 2-1, Philip Holm fired a slap shot from the point that Rampage goaltender Adam Wilcox kicked into the slot. Matthew Highmore grabbed the rebound and found an open Sikura for the late equalizer. The deciding play unfolded 16 seconds into OT, when Nilsson took an Adam Boqvist pass at center ice, split a pair of defenders and solved Wilcox on a backhander. “Team resiliency,” Rockford goaltending coach Peter Aubry said. “We stuck with it, and you could see that resiliency. (We) were getting pucks back in the offensive zone, and we were able score a couple goals out of it.” IceHogs goaltender Matt Tomkins finished with 21 saves. Wilcox stopped 22 shots for San Antonio. In Saturday’s action in Austin, the IceHogs fell 7-6 in shootout that capped a back-andforth contest between Rockford and the Texas Stars. Trailing 6-5 with three minutes to go in the third, Brandon Hagel grabbed an Anton Wedin rebound and tied the contest. The IceHogs knocked on the door several times in extra time only to be stymied by Texas goaltender Landon Bow. In the shootout, Texas winger Jason Robertson and Dylan Sikura scored in the second round to keep things even. Joe L’Esperance’s put an end to that in the next round, however, with a five-hole dagger that gave the Stars the extra point in the

standings. The IceHogs have now picked up points in seven of their last nine games and are 6-2-0-1 in that span. Saturday was a night of multiples for Rockford. John Quenneville registered his seventh career multi-goal game with a pair of tallies while Adam Boqvist set a career high with three assists. Alexandre Fortin, Tyler Sikura and Anton Wedin each posted multipoint efforts with a goal and an assist each. Texas’ Jason Roberston finished with a team-high two goals and an assist for the Stars. “It was a wild game,” Rockford assistant coach Anders Sorensen said. “But we didn’t think we did as good of a job that we need to do, especially on the road in terms of our checking game and picking guys up. But we got a point out of it. It was nice to see some guys get on the board, and our power play got on the board twice. Those are positives for sure. And we will take those with us going into tomorrow.”

Highmore recalled

Highmore was recalled by the Chicago Blackhawks Monday. The 23-year-old has notched 10 points (4g, 6a) in 17 games with the IceHogs this season. He picked up an assist in Rockford’s overtime victory over San Antonio on Sunday and now has three points over his last five contests with two goals and a helper in that span. Overall, the third-year forward has posted 62 points (31g, 31a) in 93 career AHL games with the IceHogs from 2017-20. The Halifax, Novia Scotia native joins the Blackhawks with two career goals in 13 career NHL games with Chicago during the 2017-18 campaign. He made his NHL debut March 1 at San Jose and scored his first NHL goal on March 10 at Boston. The Blackhawks face the Dallas Stars Tuesday at the United Center.

Back in Mack: Bears’ talisman serves up reminder of brilliance By Robert Zeglinski

any other factor. As Mack goes, the Bears follow and fall in line. If he falters, chances are, they probably will take after his example. In five of the last seven weeks, the Bears’ five most recent losses, Mack recorded but one sack and a few dozen or so tackles. Be it hazardous obstacles of routine double and triple-teams, the lack of a complementary pass rusher in Akiem Hicks’ absence to draw attention away, or a combination of serendipitous calamity on an overall regressed Bears’ defense, Mack was reduced to an afterthought; an also-ran as easily dismissed as any forgettable role player. A player routinely placed on pedestal of “generational” and “game-changing” was instead only shifting the pendulum of games by virtue of accomplishing little to nothing. Sometimes all a person needs is a jolt of inspiration. That, or an experience against an over-matched offense and a quarterback who wants nothing to do with their presence alone. On Sunday against the Giants, the Bears saw the Mack of old. The same traffic cones of offensive linemen that were previously miring Mack in the muck of the same commute every nine to fiveer experiences during the week, were reduced to turnstiles. Rookie Daniel Jones could not channel the same quarterbacks who eluded Mack’s monstrous wing-span or rid themselves of the football before he had the opportunity to touch them. If there was a place for rookies to have a late “Welcome to the NFL moment,” Jones had his come in late November against Mack. He didn’t have a choice in the matter. Most never do when Mack is involved. The sequence that has defined Mack’s career happened in a flash. As the Bears wafted away in the wind of another disap-

Contributor

Those who have seen Khalil Mack play football aren’t used to him being a non-factor. For years, when the 28-yearold buzzsaw has strapped on his pads, buckled his chinstrap, and put his hand in any rough turf, he’s delivered a one-man defensive reckoning. He’s been the subject of many an offensive coordinator and quarterback’s nightmare. He’s taken over games and manhandled 300-pound human beings as if it were they effortless endeavors, not Herculean undertakings. The contrast between Mack putting the fear of God into his opponents, or managing little more than a shoulder swipe of an impact is so vast, it jars the sensibilities of what many think they understand about football. In the midst of a disappointing season, many have been scapegoated. In a year where the Bears have barely floated above .500, conversations have centered on Mitchell Trubisky falling into a chasm when forced to make The Leap. Matt Nagy’s coaching pedigree has been called into question, asking whether he was up to the task of capably leading 53 men with a steady hand. Various players outside of Trubisky’s sphere – Anthony Miller, Leonard Floyd, Adam Shaheen, to name a few – have been called irreparable busts, outright wastes of investments. In trying times, everyone is dragged down into a pit of invalidation, and everyone finds no lifeline to climb back out. Whereas generally every Bears player and coach has been derided in trying times, Mack and his recent penchant for invisibility have managed to escape criticism relatively unimpeded. But his short term fall from grace is as much an emblem of Chicago’s ongoing disappointment as

pointing first-half effort, the perennial All-Pro decided to impose his will. After a field goal had given Chicago a tenuous 13-7 lead, Mack fought his away across the face of the New York offensive front to swat the ball out of Jones’s hands. The Bears would recover near the goal line; not without a fervent reaction from both the Soldier Field crowd and a sideline of teammates that had been patient in waiting to see Mack do his thing once more. There were various other occasions where Mack found himself playing pinball with the Giants’ offensive line as his presence was felt and amplified. But none stick out more than a demoralizing strip-sack. None ever could exemplify Mack at the top of his game in a more accurate fashion. It’s his calling card, and foreshadowing of what might be on the horizon. “You felt ‘52’ everywhere today,” Matt Nagy said. “You really did. He was everywhere. When we have that, you can feel our game really elevate, and that’s what

it’s all about.” Some athletes’ reputations precede them. Their persona establishes an expectation of consistent greatness, and bewilderment when that baseline isn’t reached. They walk on hallowed, soft ground by virtue of their mere existence. Rarely do they trip in a crack in the sidewalk or lose their balance. They’re more deity than human. They’re not allowed to fail. They’re not supposed to. When a reputation is so formidably compact and fortified: the benefit of the doubt is filtered through on instinct, and surrendered just as quickly. The Bears’ playoff hopes are faint, almost non-existent. But they have a pulse. If Mack has again found his groove, if he’s started to play like people expect Khalil Mack to play, they’ll always have a pulse. Such is the power of someone who has had enough.
