Edwardsville chief on Amazon warehouse: ‘It was definitely one of our worst days’ By Beth Hundsdorfer
Capitol News Illinois bhundsdorfer@capitolnewsillinois.com
In the wake of Friday night storms that left six dead at an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, a disaster proclamation was issued Monday for 28 counties in southern and central Illinois. The proclamation will bring personnel or equipment from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to assist with storm recovery. “My administration is committed to standing with Edwardsville and all of the surrounding communities affected in every aspect of the immediate recovery, as well as on the road to rebuilding,” said Gov. JB Pritzker, who issued the proclamation. “Yesterday, I authorized a state disaster proclamation for Madison County, as well as all storm-impacted counties, to facilitate recovery efforts, as well as the pursuit of additional federal resources. We are working directly with the White House and FEMA to ensure access to all federal resources for this community. And, as local entities work to secure federal reimbursements and recovery dollars, we will assist every step of the way.” The National Weather Service issued a preliminary report that an EF3 tornado struck the Edwardsville area, downing trees, interrupting power service and ripping the roof of an Amazon warehouse, killing six and causing multiple injuries. Tornadoes were also confirmed in Cass, Menard, Bond, Shelby and Coles counties. The counties included in the disaster
declaration include Bond, Cass, Champaign, Coles, Edgar, Effingham, Fayette, Ford, Greene, Grundy, Iroquois, Jackson, Jersey, Kankakee, Lawrence, Livingston, Logan, Macon, Macoupin, Madison, Montgomery, Morgan, Moultrie, Pike, Sangamon, Shelby, Tazewell and Woodford. Pritzker was back at the site of the 593,000-square-foot warehouse on Monday morning with Rep. Amy Elik, R-Fosterburg, and Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, to announce the disaster proclamation. “As our community looks ahead following the devastating storms that hit our region last weekend, now is a time for us to come together to support each other and heal,” Stuart said. “I want to thank Governor Pritzker for deploying resources to our region to help those who were directly impacted by the storms recover.” “The disaster proclamation will provide our region additional resources and funding needed to help our community recover following Friday night’s storm.” Elik said. “I appreciate everything our first responders and volunteers have and continue to do to help the region recover.” Madison County Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler said the storm was erratic and devastating. The warehouses to the north and west of the Amazon warehouse were not disturbed. Frogs from a nearby retention pond were picked up by the tornado and slammed to the pavement, Prenzler said. The tornado cut through the south side of the building.
All of the fatalities were in the south side of building, Edwardsville Police Chief Mike Fillback said. The north side of the warehouse was not damaged. Prenzler met Monday morning with Amazon managers who told him the storm hit as at one of the busiest times of the year as orders are readied for Christmas deliveries. When the storm hit around 8:30 on Friday night, trucks were returning, making accounting for the number inside the warehouse difficult, Prenzler said. Emergency crews arrived quickly and survivors were removed by bus or car. Some were taken to Pontoon Beach City Hall, where grief counselors were on hand. “This was a terrible and random storm,” Prenzler said. “We are still in shock by it all.” Fillback said it was sobering. As the emergency crews worked through Friday night to try to find and extract survivors, they were hit again by a second storm about 3 a.m. on Saturday, Fillback said. “It was definitely one of our worst days,” he said. “Hopefully, we don’t have another like this that requires this level of response again.” Prenzler said he intended to sign the disaster proclamation on Monday afternoon. Cities wracked by opioids close to getting $26B settlement By Andrew Selsky Associated Press
McMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) — The opioid epidemic blew into this picturesque Oregon town like a toxic wind, leaving overdoses, addiction, homelessness and wrecked families in its wake. In a humble, single-stor y brick building, three blocks from downtown McMinnville’s wine-tasting rooms and cafes, staffers and volunteers of a recovery center called Provoking Hope help the casualties. The workers, who themselves are recovering from drug addiction, offer counseling, coffee and, for some, clean syringes. McMinnville and thousands of other towns across the United States are on the precipice of receiving billions of dollars in the second-biggest legal settlement in U.S. history. The $26 billion from three drug distributors and a pharmaceutical manufacturer would address damage wrought by opioids, which the federal government declared in 2017 was a public health emergency States, counties and cities face a deadline in three weeks to sign onto the settlement, and most states have agreed to do so. But a few holdouts remain, including Oregon, where disagreements have emerged between state and local government officials. The money is needed. In Yamhill County, where McMinnville is the county seat, it would expand counseling and treatment, including in jails, expand residential treatment and recovery facilities and fund other programs, said County Commissioner Casey Kulla. As Provoking Hope’s office manager, Anne Muilenburg has seen the devastating effects of drug addiction and also experienced it first-hand. She says her addiction started as many in America did, after her physician prescribed opioids. They were for a painful spinal bone spur. Ten years later, using her prescription and buying two other people’s prescriptions, she was taking 35 pills per day, far exceeding the maximum dosage. “It wasn’t even enough to make me feel high. It was just enough to not make me sick,” Muilenburg said. She described opiate withdrawal — experienced when she would run out of pills — as “the worst feeling ever.” “It makes you feel like somebody’s peeling your skin off,” she recalled in her small office, decorated with posters with sayings like “be kind” and “stay humble.” Muilenburg finally got treatment but then “drug jumped” to alcohol and meth-
amphetamine. She wound up losing her job in a car dealership, lost her husband (they have since reunited), was in and out of jail and found herself living on the street. “My being homeless was one of the things that led me to wanting to change my life,” Muilenburg said. She has been free of drugs for 4 1/2 years. Muilenburg said funds from the settlement are needed to address the community’s drug dependency. “We need more treatment centers. Ever y place needs more treatment centers,” she said. “It’s ridiculous that somebody wants to go to treatment and they have to wait eight to 10 weeks for a bed.” In the U.S., more than 500,000 deaths over the last two decades have been linked to opioids, both prescription drugs and illegal ones. The clock is ticking on the settlement, with a payout second only to the $200 billion-plus tobacco settlement, in 1998, with the nation’s four largest tobacco companies. T he t h re e d r ug d i st r ibutor s -AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson -- and drug maker Johnson & Johnson agreed in July to pay the combined $26 billion to resolve thousands of state and local government lawsuits. But if the defendants feel there’s a lack of participation by states and local jurisdictions, it could cause them to back away from the landmark agreement or eventually reduce the amount of the settlement. “The defendants have the last bite at the apple to say, ‘Do we have a critical mass to justify going forward,’” said Joe Rice, an attorney for the plaintiffs. In exchange for the payout, participating states, counties and cities would have to drop any lawsuits against the defendants and agree not to sue them in the future for the opioid epidemic. “There are complex tradeoffs at stake here,” said Caleb Alexander, a drug safety expert at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “On the one hand, the settlement would offer sorely needed funding to scale up treatment and otherwise address the opioid epidemic. On the other, many parties believe the settlement is not enough.” At least 45 states have signed on or signaled their intent to do so, and at least 4,012 counties and cities have also confirmed participation, plaintiffs’ attorneys said Friday. Washington state has already ruled out
participating, with Attorney General Bob Ferguson calling the settlement “woefully insufficient.” He’s suing the nation’s three biggest drug distributors - the same ones in the national settlement - for $38 billion in a trial that began in November. In Pennsylvania, the district attorneys for Philadelphia and Allegheny County, which includes Pittsburgh, have sued the state attorney general to ensure their lawsuits against the drug industry could continue, saying their communities’ shares from the settlement would cover only a fraction of the epidemic’s financial toll. “We are not going to accept a settlement that is a sellout,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said. Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro says receiving payouts from the settlement is a sure thing, unlike continuing to pursue lawsuits against the companies. Local governments can opt out and keep suing, he said, but the more that do, the less the state would receive. New Mexico is still working out details “and we’re anticipating that counties and local governments will be responding soon,” said Jerri Mares of the state attorney general’s office. In Oregon, lawyers for local governments and the state recently resolved an impasse over how the settlement would be disbursed, according to The Lund Report, a health care news site. The state of Oregon had wanted local governments to apply to it for grants. The local governments instead wanted a larger share of the funds in direct payments. There’s now disagreement on how much of the settlement should go to attorneys who sued on behalf of several counties in Oregon. Kulla, the Yamhill County commissioner, supports the opioid settlement but doesn’t want the state taking excessive control of it. “We at the counties are the ones working with those addicted and their families, and we incur the societal costs of those addictions,” he said. Under the settlement, the payments would be made over 18 years. The tobacco settlement was controlled by state governments, and most of the money has not gone to pay for the toll of tobacco. By contrast, the opioid settlements are structured so most of the money is intended to fight the crisis. Kulla recognizes there won’t be a quick fix. “It’s going to be long term,” Kulla said. “It’s going to take generations, really, to dig ourselves out of this.”

CAPITOL BREACH INVESTIGATION
Jan. 6 panel votes for contempt charges against Mark Meadows BY MARY CLARE JALONICK AND FARNOUSH AMIRI ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection has voted to recommend contempt charges against former White House chief of sta Mark Meadows as lawmakers revealed a series of frantic texts he received as the attack was underway. The texts, provided by Meadows before he ceased cooperating with the committee, revealed that members of Congress, Fox News anchors and even President Donald Trump’s own son were urging Meadows to push Trump to act quickly to stop the siege by his supporters. The panel voted 9-0 Monday to recommend the contempt charges. The House is expected to vote Tuesday to refer the charges to the Justice Department, which will decide whether to prosecute the former Republican congressman. “We need an Oval address,” Donald Trump Jr. texted Meadows as his father’s supporters were breaking into the Capitol, sending lawmakers running for their lives and interrupting the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory. “He has to lead now. It has gone too far and gotten out of hand.” Trump Jr. added, “He’s got to condemn this s—- ASAP.” Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the panel’s vice chairwoman, detailed the texts obtained by the committee as the panel voted to recommend the contempt charges against Meadows, who did not show up for a deposition last week after his lawyer said he would stop cooperating. Cheney said the texts show Trump’s “supreme dereliction” as he refused to strongly condemn the violence of his supporters, and also raise questions about whether he sought to obstruct the congressional certification through inaction. “These texts leave no doubt,” Cheney said. “The White House knew exactly what was happening at the Capitol.” The vote comes as the panel has already interviewed more than 300 witnesses, and subpoenaed more than 40 people, as it seeks to create the most comprehensive record yet of the lead-up to the insurrection and of the violent siege itself. The committee’s leaders have vowed to punish anyone who doesn’t comply, and the Justice Department has already indicted longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon after he defied his subpoena this fall. “Whatever legacy he thought he left in the House, this is his legacy now,” commit-
tee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said of Meadows — a former Republican congressman from North Carolina — ahead of the vote. “His former colleagues singling him out for criminal prosecution because he wouldn’t answer questions about what he knows about a brutal attack on our democracy. That’s his legacy.” In a Monday letter to Thompson, Meadows’ attorney George Terwilliger said the contempt vote would be “unjust” because Meadows was one of Trump’s top aides and all presidents should be aorded executive privilege to shield their private conversations. Meadows himself sued the panel, asking a court to invalidate two subpoenas that he says are “overly broad and unduly burdensome.” Terwilliger noted that the contempt statute has been used infrequently over time and argued that a contempt referral of a senior presidential aide “would do great damage to the institution of the Presidency.” The committee has gradually teased a handful of the emails and texts Meadows had provided to the committee before he ended his cooperation — including 6,600 pages of records taken from personal email accounts and about 2,000 text messages. The panel has not released any of the communications in full. On Monday, Cheney read the texts from Trump Jr. and a series of Fox News hosts as those in Trump’s inner circle attempted to reach the president through his chief of sta, imploring him to take action against the violence that was taking place outside and inside the Capitol. “Hey Mark, the president needs to tell people in the Capitol to go home ... this is hurting all of us ... he is destroying his legacy,” Fox News host Laura Ingraham texted Meadows, according to the committee. “Please get him on tv. Destroying everything you have accomplished,” Brian Kilmeade wrote. In response to one text from Trump Jr., Meadows texted: “I’m pushing it hard. I agree.” Cheney also detailed texts that she said were from members of Congress and others in the Capitol. “Hey, Mark, protestors are literally storming the Capitol,” read one text. “Breaking windows on doors. Rushing in. Is Trump going to say something?” Another appeared to come from a member in the House chamber. “There’s an armed stando at the House Chamber door,” the text read, according to the panel.
If Meadows had appeared for his deposition, lawmakers had planned to ask him about Trump’s eorts to overturn the election in the weeks before the insurrection, including his outreach to states and his communications with members of Congress. Trump’s former top White House aide “is uniquely situated to provide key information, having straddled an ocial role in the White House and unocial role related to Mr. Trump’s reelection campaign,” the panel said in a 51-page report released Sunday evening. As part of its list of questions for Meadows, the panel says it wanted to know more about whether Trump was engaged in discussions regarding the response of the National Guard, which was delayed for hours as the violence escalated and the rioters beat police guarding the Capitol building. The documents provided by Meadows include an email he sent to an unidentified

person saying that the Guard would be present to “protect pro Trump people,” the panel said, and that more would be available on standby. The committee did not release any additional details about the email. In a transcript of the deposition Meadows skipped, committee sta said they would have interviewed Meadows about emails “to leadership at the Department of Justice on December 29th and 30th, 2020, and January 1st, 2021, encouraging investigations of suspected voter fraud,” even though election ocials and courts across the country had rejected those claims. In a text exchange with an unidentified senator, the committee said, Meadows said Trump believed Vice President Mike Pence had power to reject electors in his role presiding over the Jan. 6 certification. Pence did not have that power under the law, as the vice president’s function is largely ceremonial.

Virus Outbreak
COVID toll nears 800,000 to close out year filled with death By Heather Hollingsworth Associated Press
MISSION, Kan. (AP) — Carolyn Burnett is bracing for her first Christmas without her son Chris, a beloved high school football coach whose outdoor memorial service drew a crowd of hundreds. The unvaccinated 34-year-old father of four died in September as a result of COVID-19 after nearly two weeks on a ventilator, and his loss has left a gaping hole for his mother, widow and family as the holidays approach. How, she thought, could they take a holiday photo without Chris? What would Christmas Day football be like without him offering up commentary? How could they play trivia games on Christmas Eve without him beating everyone with his movie expertise? The U.S. is on the verge of yet another depressing pandemic milestone — 800,000 deaths. It’s a sad coda to a year that held so much promise with the arrival of vaccines but is ending in heartbreak for the many grieving families trying to navigate the holiday season. For its Christmas card photo, the Burnett family ultimately opted to hold up a football presented as a memorial by the Kansas City Chiefs to represent Chris.

Carolyn Burnett also set up a special shelf for the holidays, filling it with a drawing of her son, his bronzed baby shoe, a candle, a poem and an ornament of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. But nothing feels quite right this year. “These emotions come and go so quickly,” she said. “You see something. You hear something. His favorite food. You hear the song. There’s just all these little things. And then, bam.” The year began with the COVID-19 death toll at about 350,000 in the U.S., at a time when the country was in the throes of a winter surge so bad that patients were lined up in emergency room hallways waiting for beds. But vaccines were just getting rolled out, and sports stadiums and fairgrounds were quickly transformed into mass vaccination sites. Case numbers began falling. By spring, nearly all schools had reopened and communities were shedding mask orders. TV newscasters began talking cheerfully about a post-pandemic world. President Joe Biden proclaimed the Fourth of July holiday as a celebration of the nation’s freedom from the virus. It didn’t last long. Delta struck just as vaccination rates were stalling amid a wave of misinformation, devastat-

ing poorly immunized portions of the Midwest and South. Hospitals brought back mobile morgues and opened up their pocket books in a desperate bid to attract enough nurses to care for the sick. “People have no idea,” said Debbie Eaves, a lab worker, who grew weary of the wave of death as she collected swabs from patients at Oakdale Community Hospital in Louisiana amid the surge. “Oh, no. They have no idea what it is to look and see, to see it.” In Kansas, Carolyn Burnett begged her son, who went by the nickname Coach Cheese because of his love of cheeseburgers, to get vaccinated. “He was a part of the group that ... just didn’t trust it,” she said, pausing and sighing. “They didn’t want to be a guinea pig. They didn’t want to be experimented on.” She thought maybe he was softening. When his dad got his first COVID-19 shot in August, Chris, a diabetic, told his mother he would discuss it with his doctor. But then one of Chris’ children got infected at a family sleepover and soon everyone was sick. She texted him, “Honey, God’s got you.” His last text to her said: “Mama, I feel him.” He died Sept. 11. School administrators tweeted heartfelt condolences, praising his passion in coaching running backs at Olathe East High School. Tearful athletes paid tribute in TV interviews. The Kansas City Glory, an all-female football team that Burnett coached, asked fans to contribute to a GoFundMe fundraiser to help his children. And he was honored with an inspiration award at a ceremony that recognizes the region’s best high school athletes. “We had so much support that you would think he was a celebrity,” his mom recalled. Now, as the year ends, the delta variant is fueling another wave of hospitalizations, court battles are brewing over vaccine mandates and fresh questions are swirling about the new omicron variant. Steve Grove has seen his share of coronavirus deaths in his role as a chaplain at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Recently, one dying patient’s family gathered in a conference room. One by one they were taken to the patient’s bedside, while the other relatives watched on Zoom. “It’s a huge pain in the butt and the connection drops and it’s weird,” he
acknowledged. “Here’s what I’m going to say to COVID: ‘Up yours.’ I’m getting a Zoom call going, and there you have it. That’s what’s happening today at least. You’re going to do what you’re going to do and you’re going to kill this person. You get to do that COVID. But what we’re going to do today is this. And I’m going to give them a hug when it’s done. “The alternative,” he said, “is that you just, you just give up, and I guess most people in this building have too much faith in humanity.” He acknowledged that he sometimes gets mad at unvaccinated patients because it “didn’t have to be this way. And now there’s a mess that perhaps was avoidable.” “I’ll confess to it,” he said. “And I know I’m not proud of it, and I swallow it down and then I remember as a human being that my compassion reminds me that it’s still somebody’s loved one. It is still death and it still stings.” Dr. LaTasha Perkins, of Georgetown University Student Health, is getting ready to take a job in January in a clinic that helps underserved residents of the community. She is Black and said she felt compelled to make the change after watching the virus devastate her family. She has lost a great uncle, an aunt and a cousin to COVID-19, and she suspects the virus may have played a role in the death of her grandfather. When it struck her own household last December after she had gotten her first shot but the rest of her family wasn’t yet eligible, she spent sleepless nights watching her toddler breathe and took her husband to the hospital, although he wasn’t admitted. She never got sick and credits the vaccine. Her husband also later got the shot. Still, maddeningly to her, only three of her six siblings are vaccinated. Some of the hesitation, she said, is rooted in the “horrible things done in the name of medicine to Black and brown bodies in this country.” She tells them: “If you’re worried about rich white people not caring about you, they’re lining up getting the vaccine.” She has been unable, though, to get through to some of her relatives. It’s part of the reason why she started doing hesitancy talks specifically for African Americans in the D.C. area. “For my own selfish reason, I don’t want to go to any more funerals,” she said, “and I don’t want COVID to come back in my house.”

Miss America
Miss America turns 100. Will she last another 100 years? By Susan Haigh Associated Press
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — As Miss America turns 100, a major question remains unanswered: Is she still relevant? The glitzy competition was born from a 1921 Atlantic City beauty contest, just a year after women were given the right to vote, and maintains a complicated presence in an American culture that has since undergone multiple waves of feminism. Participation and viewership has dropped since its 1960s heyday — when the next Miss America is crowned Thursday, her coronation will only be available to stream via NBC’s Peacock service, shunted from her primetime broadcast throne. Faithful Miss America organizers and enthusiasts contend the annual ritual is here to stay and will keep changing with the times. And even though they may not have indeed devised a plan for world peace, many participants say the organization — billed as one of the largest providers of scholarship assistance to young women — has been life-altering, opening doors for them professionally and personally. And they believe others should have the same opportunities. “I think that people have the wrong idea about what Miss America is all about because it’s not just about getting dressed up and being prim and proper and being perfect on stage,” said Miss America
2004 Ericka Dunlap, who graduated from college debt-free, founded a public relations firm and become a TV personality. Fans of Miss America often cheer on their state’s contender like they would for a local sports team. Yet some have voiced disappointment about some of the competition’s attempts to adapt to contemporary mores and evolve from its regressive beginnings. “It’s in kind of a bind because as it tries to progress, it not only loses its original identity, but becomes less entertaining to the people who like to watch it,” said Margot Mifflin, author of “Looking for Miss America: A Pageant’s 100–Year Quest to Define Womanhood.” Fans, she said, are split over the trajectory of the competition — no longer “pageant.” Some want it to be about “beauty and fitness” while others embrace the move toward focusing on leadership, talent and communication skills, she said. Meanwhile, the competition is still engulfed by calls for greater diversity. In the late 1930s, 40s and 50s, minority women were excluded by “rule number seven,” which stated contestants had to be “of good health and of the white race.” 1968 saw a Miss Black America Contest, held to revolt against the lack of diversity, as well as a protest by several hundred women organized by the feminist group New York Radical Women, which called Miss America “an image that oppresses

women in every area in which it purports to represent us.” It wasn’t until 1984 that the first Black Miss America, Vanessa Williams, was crowned — and she relinquished her title over a nude photo scandal, receiving an apology from the organization only in 2015. At least 11 minority women have won the title in all. Miss America President and CEO Shantel Krebs, a former South Dakota secretary of state who does not take a salary, contends the Miss America organization is “committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.” She said the event has also been at “the center of social issues” over the past 100 years, noting winners have taken on serious modernday issues during their reigns, from HIV/ AIDS awareness to the scourge of opioid abuse. But Mifflin notes the modernization of the competition has happened “well behind the broader culture in terms of women’s progress.” It wasn’t until 2018 that the judging on physical appearance was eliminated, with the help of former Miss America Gretchen Carlson, who ended up having to step down as board chair. Carlson was part of an all-female leadership team that took over following an email scandal in which male leaders insulted former Miss Americas, denigrating their appearance, intelligence and even their sex lives. While some welcomed the changes as a way to make the event more relevant, many state organizations rebelled against the new leadership team. “I say in the book that it’s always been in dialogue with feminism, but behind feminism,” Mifflin said of the Miss America competition. “So it always seems like it’s trying to catch up.” Dunlap, the seventh Black M iss America, believes the competition — which she has no problem calling a pageant — needs to become more diverse in order to remain relevant. She noted, for example, there have been no winners of Hispanic origin. She said more needs to be done to help young women of color get involved at the local level, such as helping them cover the high costs of participating — including developing their talents and buying gowns — so they can pursue the same life-changing opportunities. This year, the nonprofit organization — run by an ardent group of volunteers at the national, state and local levels — announced the top scholarship awarded at the Dec. 16 finale will double to
$100,000. The change was made possible by a donation from Miss America 1996 Shawntel Smith Wuerch and her husband Ryan Wuerch. According to the organization, a total of $435,500 in scholarship money will be distributed in this year’s competition, while more than $5 million is awarded annually through national, state and local programs. Dunlap hopes that instead of looking for what she calls an “it girl” who can attract hits on social media, the Miss America organization in the coming years focuses on the promoting the “longevity of the organization.” Krebs says organizers are doing just that, noting the number of annual participants increased from about 5,000 to 6,500 after the 2018 changes. “I just feel like there’s mixed messaging on whether or not you can be beautiful and attractive and also still be intelligent. And I just think that’s silly to me,” Dunlap said. “It’s like women can only do one thing, so pick a side. And that’s not true.” It’s unclear if the decision to move the competition online says more about the fate of broadcast television than Miss America. NBCUniversal Media has been bullish about its streaming service and Krebs insisted the move to streaming was the organization’s decision and it had nothing to do with viewership numbers. In 2019, the Miss America finale on NBC drew 3.6 million viewers, an all-time low. In contrast, the 1954 competition attracted 27 million viewers when there was much less competition for eyeballs. “If you say you want to be around the next 100 years, we absolutely had the desire to be streamed because that is where our future is,” Krebs said, noting how younger people — and keep in mind, Miss America contestants must be between the ages of 17 and 25 — are less likely to have access to broadcast television. Some fear moving online may spell the downfall of what’s often dubbed “the first reality TV show,” which started airing live in 1954. “We have w itnessed the demise of a historic event that helped shape Americans’ lifetimes,” one fan proclaimed on Facebook. Another agreed with Krebs, predicting “the audience we can reach is greater than ever now!” Yet another fan, still upset the event is no longer in Atlantic City — it moved to a Connecticut casino in 2019 — wrote: “Unfortunately after 100 years it seems to have run its course.”

Understanding our Planting Zone BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR
One of the main limitations to growing perennial fruit and vegetable crops in Northern Illinois is the USDA Planting Zone we live in. This planting zone defines what perennial crops will be able to survive our cold winters successfully each year. It also helps you decide what plants you should plant and those you should never plant. As fruit tree catalogues have started to arrive for 2021, this is a good time to understand your planting zones to ensure you have success in what you plant. There are 11 dierent USDA Plant Zones based on the minimal low temperature range within a defined area and combined
with a perennial plant’s hardiness to survive this threshold range. Each zone is a 10 degree Fahrenheit dierence. For example, if you live in zone 8, your growing area has a seasonal low average of 10 F to 20 F and that you could only plant perennial plants that are able to tolerate that low. You could plant fruit trees that could survive lower than this but you could not plant any perennial plants that cannot survive that temperature range. When you look at the USDA Plant Zone map online, you will see dierent color zones that run horizontal across the United States. Most states have multiple planting zones usually 2 to 3. In most cases, a state will have a dominant
planting zone and smaller zones. You might see a small planting zone within the state’s dominant planting zone. For instance, Georgia has a small dot of zone 7 within zone 8. These smaller dots/ regions of planting zones are based on microclimates which could be tied to the topography of that area. Illinois has 3 planting zones: 5, 6, and 7. If you looked at a map of Illinois with these planting zones, you’d see a line running across Springfield. North of this line is zone 5 while south of the line is zone 6. There are small pockets of zone 6 in Cook County and zone 7 in Southern Illinois, respectively. All of our region is zone 5 which is further broken down into
zone 5a and zone 5b. This is a 5 degree dierence in which zone 5a is “-15 to -20 F” and zone 5b is “-10 to -15F”. Most of zone 5a is west of Rockford. While this dierence may seem minimal, depending on the winter a perennial plant may not be able to tolerate it. So, you live in the USDA Planting Zone of 5a and 5b. Take this information with you as you decide on perennial fruit trees and others to plant in your growing area. A tree listed for planting in zone 4 to 8 would work fine in our area but one that is zone 6 to 9 would not. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Decentralized renewable energy contributions to sustainability BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL
ILLINOIS RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTORS
When we started the IREA we focused on energy conservation, eciency and renewable energy for use in homes, businesses and public buildings. The emphasis followed up on courses we taught at Northern Illinois University in field sciences, ecology, environmental quality, energy conservation and renewable energy. Our concerns over the adverse impacts of fossil fuels consumption on the natural environment stimulated us to continue to focus on such subjects after we retired from our university careers. It was widely recognized in the scientific community that while fossil fuels were integral to the existing economy the levels of their consumption were imposing major adverse impacts on both on human health and the health of the planet. We conducted an energy audit on our home with some guidance from a state publication on Home Energy Savings. Since the state oered a home auditing service for a small fee we also had our home audited by a professional auditor which confirmed the results of our own
audit. For a few years we oered a home energy auditing service as part of the work being done by the IREA. In addition to the auditing service we called attention to state support of small solar installations for homes, businesses and schools designed to stimulate public interest in renewable energy. The dramatic drop in the costs of solar electric systems, along with state and the federal government incentives, are stimulating their widespread installation while cooperating utilities are encouraging energy eciency adoptions. With the current separation of energy programs between state ocials and utility interests we felt a need to remind people of the economic and environmental values of combining energy eciency and solar installations for homes and buildings. The Soul of Wisconsin, a citizen organization in southwest Wisconsin, emphasizes the economic and environmental benefits of adopting both energy conservation, eciency and solar energy installations with batteries for homes, businesses and community buildings. The organization is challenging the construction of a new power line sponsored by utility interests. Rather
than pay for the cost of a new power line, they would prefer to use the funds to transition to cleaner energy sources for customers in their service area. We are not involved with the organization but cite the situation as an example of diering perspectives on how to achieve a transition to cleaner energy sources. The organization claims investing in non-transmission alternatives will secure more carbon reductions at a lower cost from local power production by using solar energy and batteries, conservation, energy eciency and load management as opposed to carbon reductions resulting from remote renewable installations and converting coal plants to natural gas plants. The organization is also concerned about long term losses from converting productive agricultural lands and using them as sites for solar and wind farms. Tourism interests based on the natural beauty of the area fear their industry could be damaged by the presence of a new power line. If energy were used more eciently and more solar systems were installed on existing urban roofs and selected sites it would lessen but not eliminate the need for solar and wind
farms and power lines cutting across the countryside. Carolyn Fortune recently published an article based on a survey of 103 US mayors and their eorts to incorporate technologies to reduce energy use and carbon emissions in their cities. All-electric vehicles, low energy buildings, solar electric generation, ecient lighting and energy ecient appliances, pumps and other systems were some of the most frequently mentioned areas of interest. The most significant challenges to increasing energy eciency and conservation are financial restraints and costs. As we accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources conflicts over where renewable energy sources and their essential power lines will be located will continue. The initial rush to implement the energy transition could become more tempered with time by aesthetic and other environmental considerations. Another approach to cutting energy use and carbon emissions is based on public acceptance of less energy intensive lifestyles. A clear separation of meeting basic needs as opposed to fulling endless wants could lower energy consumption levels and provide for comfortable living.
