RACVB: Stroll on State attendance down, still a win for city By Jim Hagerty Reporter
ROCKFORD - Attendance at Stroll on State was down this year, as an estimated 21,875 people attended the Nov. 30 festival. This year’s total is drastically down from 2018’s record-breaking estimated attendance of 87,500. Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (RACVB) officials say cold and rainy weather, which cut event short, was responsible for the decline. Organizers say despite the poor weather, Stroll was a success thanks to the efforts of a community network that invested 5,406 pre- and event-day volunteer hours. “When Stroll was first imagined, we hoped it could become an event that families and friends would look forward to as a way to kick off their holiday season,” RACVB President John Groh said. “While the weather certainly impacted attendance,
we were pleased that despite the weather so many families still showed up. Their willingness to come out in gloomy weather tells our team that Stroll has become part of their family traditions.” To estimate Stroll’s attendance, Groh’s team evaluates a host of metrics, including aerial photography, feedback from crowd spotters, shuttle bus ridership and sales from local businesses. Other specific metrics showed 11,800 multi-colored lights decorated Rockford’s Christmas tree; 7,000 pieces of candy given out by Mrs. Claus during the parade; 4,000 children visited Santa Claus; and 2,819 people utilized at least one of four park-and-ride shuttles to and from the event. More than 1,200 people signed up for the Dasher Dash 5K. The RACVB said a post-event survey showed that 85% of Stroll attendees
reported a positive experience. Ninetythree percent said they are more likely to come back downtown; 88% said they would recommend Stroll on State to a family member, friend or colleague; 80% said that it was not their first time attending Stroll on State; and 45% said Stroll positively changed their perception of downtown. “Stroll on State instills a great sense of pride in our community and each year continues to remind us of the goodness it brings to so many people,” Illinois Bank & Trust President Jeff Hultman said. The Illinois Bank & Trust team is so grateful to be a part of this ongoing tradition each year.” Illinois Bank & Trust sponsors Stroll on State. The event started in 2013 and today spans 15 blocks downtown Rockford.

State to receive $40.2 million in early childhood development grants By Peter Hancock
Capitol News Illinois phancock@capitolnewsillinois.com
SPRINGFIELD – Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office announced Monday that the state will receive $40.2 million in federal grants over the next three years to improve early childhood programs. The competitive grants are administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and they require a 30-percent cost-sharing commitment from non-federal funds. The grants are
used to build early childhood program infrastructure and expand high-quality preschool programs in targeted communities, the governor’s office said in a news release. “From our aggressive efforts to secure federal funding to our historic investments in early childhood programs and facilities, Illinois will become the best state in the nation for families raising young children,” Pritzker said in the release. Last week, Pritzker announced that the state is increasing child care provider
reimbursement rates by 5 percent statewide and by 20 percent for providers in what the Illinois Department of Human Services calls “Group 2” counties, which are primarily rural counties. The budget that lawmakers passed during the 2019 session included a $50 million increase in the state’s Early Childhood Education Block grant. In addition, the capital improvements program known as “Rebuild Illinois” provides $100 million for construction of early childhood facilities across the state.

McConnell not ruling out witnesses in trial ZEKE MILLER
ASSOCIATED PRESS
PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday that he was not ruling out calling witnesses in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial – but indicated he was in no hurry to seek new testimony either – as lawmakers remain at an impasse over the form of the trial by the GOP-controlled Senate. The House voted Wednesday to impeach Trump, who became only the third president in U.S. history to be formally charged with “high crimes and misdemeanors.” But the Senate trial may be held up until lawmakers can agree on how to proceed. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is demanding witnesses who refused to appear during House committee hearings, including acting White House chief of sta Mick Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton. McConnell, who has all-but-promised a swift acquittal of the president, has resisted making any guarantees, and has cautioned Trump against seeking the testimony of witnesses he desires for fear of elongating the trial. Instead, he appears to have secured Republican support for his plans to impose a framework drawn from the 1999 impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton. “We haven’t ruled out witnesses,” McConnell said Monday in an interview with “Fox and Friends.” “We’ve said let’s handle this case just like we did with President Clinton. Fair is fair.” That trial featured a 100-0 vote on arrangements that established two weeks of presentations and argument before a partisan tally in which Republicans, who held the majority, called a limited number of witnesses. But Democrats now would need Republican votes to secure witness testimony – and Republicans believe they have the votes to eventually block those requests. In a letter Monday to all Senators, Schumer argued that the circumstances in the Trump trial are dierent from that of Clinton, who was impeached after a lengthy independent counsel investigation in which witnesses had already testified numerous times under oath. Schumer rejected the Clinton model, saying waiting until after the presentations to decide on witnesses would “foreclose the possibility of obtaining such evidence because it will be too late.” Schumer also demanded that the Senate, in addition to receiving testimony, also compel the Trump administration to turn over documents and emails relevant to the case, including on the decision to withhold military assistance from Ukraine.
Schumer told The Associated Press on Monday that he stands ready to negotiate with McConnell, and that he hopes questions about witnesses can be settled “right at the beginning.” Without witnesses, he said, any trial would be “Kafkaesque.” “Let’s put it like this: If there are no documents and no witnesses, it will be very hard to come to an agreement,” Schumer said. If McConnell won’t agree, “We can go to the floor and demand votes, and we will,” he added. Schumer told AP the Democrats aren’t trying to delay the proceedings, saying the witnesses and the documents his party is asking for are directly relevant to the charges in the House impeachment articles. Meanwhile, the White House is projecting confidence that it will prevail in a constitutional spat with Democrats. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has delayed sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate in hopes of giving Schumer more leverage in talks with McConnell. But the White House believes Pelosi won’t be able to hold out much longer. “She will yield. There’s no way she can hold this position,” Marc Short, the chief of sta to Vice President Mike Pence, told “Fox News Sunday.” “We think her case is going nowhere.’’ The impasse between the Senate leaders leaves open the possibility of a protracted delay until the articles are delivered. Trump has called the holdup “unfair” and claimed that Democrats were violating the Constitution, as the delay threatened to prolong the pain of impeachment and cast uncertainty on the timing of the vote Trump is set to claim as vindication. “Pelosi gives us the most unfair trial in the history of the U.S. Congress, and now she is crying for fairness in the Senate, and breaking all rules while doing so,” Trump tweeted Monday from his private club in Palm Beach, Fla., where he is on a more than two-week holiday vacation. “She lost Congress once, she will do it again!” Short called Pelosi’s delay unacceptable, saying she’s “trampling” Trump’s rights to “rush this through, and now we’re going to hold it up to demand a longer process in the Senate with more witnesses.” “If her case is so air-tight ... why does she need more witnesses to make her case?’’ Short said. White House ocials have also taken to highlighting Democrats’ arguments that removing Trump was an “urgent” matter before the House impeachment vote, as they seek to put pressure on Pelosi to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate. At one point, Trump had demanded
the testimony of witnesses of his own, like Democrats Joe Biden and his son Hunter, and the intelligence community whistleblower whose summer complaint sparked the impeachment probe. But he has since relented after concerted lobbying by McConnell and other Senate Republicans who pushed him to accept the swift acquittal from the Senate and not to risk injecting uncertainty into the process by calling witnesses. The Constitution requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate to convict in an impeachment trial – and Republicans have expressed confidence that they have more than enough votes to keep Trump in oce. A separate but related fight flared Monday in the courts, where the House Judiciary Committee held open the possibility of adding to the articles of impeachment against Trump depending on whatever testimony it can obtain from former White House counsel Don McGahn. The committee also said that testimony from McGahn could be useful in any impeachment trial in the Senate. A federal appeals court is set to hear arguments on Jan. 3 on whether to force McGahn to comply with the subpoena.

Boeing ousts its CEO after two deadly 737 Max crashes By Cathy Bussewitz and David Koenig Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) – Boeing ousted CEO Dennis Muilenburg on Monday with no end in sight to the crisis that has engulfed the vaunted American aircraft manufacturer since the crash of two of its 737 Max airliners. The Boeing board had supported Muilenburg for months despite calls for his resignation from lawmakers and relatives of the passengers killed. When it became clear in recent days that federal regulators would not certify the grounded Max to fly again by year’s end as Muilenburg had hoped, the board finally abandoned him. Board members decided to remove him on a conference call Sunday, according to a person familiar with the events who discussed the private deliberations on condition of anonymity. The move came after another bad week for Boeing. The aerospace giant had announced it would temporarily halt production of the Max because it wasn’t clear when it could deliver the planes. And Boeing’s new Starliner space capsule went off course during a bungled, unmanned test flight to the International Space Station. The company said Muilenburg departed immediately and its current chairman, David Calhoun, will take over as CEO on Jan. 13. Boeing said it decided it needed new leadership to regain the confidence of regulators. The company – which has been criticized over the design of the Max, Boeing’s failure to tell pilots about a new flight-control system on the plane, and its handling of the crisis after the first crash – promised a “renewed commitment to full transparency.” Boeing declined to make Calhoun or other executives available for comment. Muilenburg had been CEO since mid-2015. The company’s stock soared during most of his tenure, as Boeing benefited from strong demand for new planes to meet the growing demand for travel around the world, although the shares have fallen 24% since peaking just before the second crash. Boeing began designing the Max in 2011 to compete with a new plane from Airbus that was cutting into sales of Boeing’s venerable 737. Critics, including members of Congress, say that Boeing, with the Federal Aviation Administration’s help, rushed the plane into production and minimized safety risks. In October 2018, a brand-new Max operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air crashed into the sea near Jakarta. Five months later,
in March, an Ethiopian Airlines Max went down shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa. All 346 people aboard the two planes were killed. Muilenburg was faulted for Boeing’s initial response to the accidents, when he and the company seemed to blame the foreign pilots. Criticism of Muilenburg grew in recent months as news reports and congressional investigations disclosed internal Boeing documents that revealed concern within the company about key design features on the Max, especially the new automated MCAS flight-control system that investigators say played a role in the two crashes. A faulty sensor caused the system to activate before the two disasters, pushing down the nose of both planes. Boeing had not told pilots about MCAS until after the Lion Air crash, and regulators at the FAA didn’t know much about it either. E a rl ie r t h i s mont h, t he Hou s e Transportation Committee disclosed an internal FAA analysis made after the first crash, which estimated that there would be 15 more fatal crashes over 45 years until Boeing fixed MCAS. Yet the FAA did not ground the plane until the second crash. Ababu Amha, who lost his wife, a flight attendant, in the Ethiopian Airlines crash, welcomed Muilenburg’s departure. “This is something that we have been asking and struggling for quite some time,” he said. “The CEO reluctantly and deliberately kept the aircraft in service after the Lion Air crash. The Ethiopian Airlines crash was a preventable accident.” He added: “What they did was a crime.” Democratic Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, said the CEO’s ouster was long overdue. “Under his watch, a long-admired company made a number of devastating decisions that suggest profit took priority over safety,” DeFazio said. “Furthermore, reports that Muilenburg attempted to pressure FAA into rushing the Max back into service are highly troubling.” FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson expressed concern this month that Boeing was pushing for an unrealistically quick return of the Max. The worldwide grounding of the Max in the wake of the two crashes has undercut orders and deliveries of new planes and caused Boeing to burn cash. With Boeing in turmoil, European rival Airbus has surged far ahead of the Chicago-based company this year. The shutdown in Max production is likely to ripple through the Pacific Northwest and
Boeing’s vast network of 900 companies that make engines, bodies and other parts for the plane. The Max debacle has put the spotlight on Boeing’s culture, which some current and former employees say changed from one driven by engineering to a top-down management system in which containing costs and maximizing profit – and driving the stock price higher – became an obsession. Peter Lemme, an engineer at Boeing for 16 years before leaving in 1997, said the shift began more than two decades ago, culminating with the 1997 acquisition of McDonnell Douglas. “It was really the Douglas management that infiltrated the Boeing philosophy,” Lemme said. Pilot unions, still seething over being kept in the dark about MCAS, said they want more openness from the new Boeing leadership. “It’s the perfect time to step back from the spreadsheet and focus on the reason airplanes fly, and that’s to safely carry human beings around the globe,” said Dennis Tajer, a 737 pilot and spokesman for the pilots union at American Airlines. Boeing stock gained 2.9% following the news of Muilenburg’s departure. Muilenburg was eligible for $39 million in cash severance, stock and bonuses based on Boeing’s stock price of $322.50 at the end of last year, according to a Boeing securities filing. The stock closed Monday at $337.55. Analysts said it was unclear whether the change in CEOs will make any difference in how quickly Boeing can win approval to get the Max flying again. The grounding has led airlines around the world to cancel tens of thousands of flights. In the U.S., Southwest has been hit
the hardest; its pilots union is suing Boeing. Without the planes, airlines had to scale back on plans for more flying. Boeing has estimated it will spend at least $9 billion to compensate airlines and adjust the Max production schedule. Analysts suspect that figure will go much higher. Many analysts believe that when the Max is allowed to fly again, the sudden increase in planes and seats will cause fares to dip. To rebuild trust, Boeing has to repair its relationship with the FAA and other authorities and must be transparent with the traveling public, said Mark Dombroff, an aviation expert and partner with the law firm Fox Rothschild. “I’ve heard it said that ‘If it ain’t Boeing, I ain’t going,’” Dombroff said. “I think that’s something Boeing’s taken great pride in, in my view justifiably, and I think they can get there again if they address these priorities.” Replacing Muilenburg will help Boeing distance itself from some of the problems, he added. “Mr. Muilenburg had become, rightly or wrongly, something of a lightning rod for controversy,” Dombroff said. Calhoun, 62, formerly ran General Electric’s jet-engine business and later was CEO of Nielsen, the television-ratings company. He has been a Boeing board member since 2009 and became chairman in October, when the board stripped Muilenburg of that title. As for whether passengers will feel comfortable flying the Max, that remains to be seen. “As long as they figured out what caused the crashes and they can solve that, then I’m fine with that, I guess,” Southwest passenger Troy Brasher said at the Oakland, California, airport.

The Veronica Blumhorst Case, Part 10: A small-town secret Editor’s note: The following is the 10th installment in a series about the disappearance of 21-year-old Veronica Blumhorst, who vanished Sept. 20, 1990, after finishing her shift at a Mendota, Illinois, grocery store. Her car was found in her garage less than a mile away and it is believed she had only $10 on her when she vanished.
By Jim Hagerty Reporter
MENDOTA - Police were quick to dig up a handful of men Veronica Blumhorst had dated before she vanished 29 years ago. Aside from her current boyfriend, the man who reported her missing and gave peculiar statements to police, nothing appeared amiss. Veronica was cordial with her exes. She even remained friends with one man. And while her most recent beau has been the de facto suspect for the past three decades, investigators may have overlooked a relationship she was reportedly having with another man, a tryst few new little about. “We are looking into details about that reported relationship,” Blumhorst family spokesman Doug Truckenbrod said. “It may have been going on for some time before her disappearance.”
And by some time, Truckenbrod means while she was seeing her current boyfriend, which now makes for a plot twist akin to a low-budget romance novel. But Truckenbrod isn’t ready to call the latest development a love triangle. That will depend on the true nature of both relationships and whether they ever clashed. “Veronica was a young woman trying to make her way in the world and kept some of her personal life private, as many 21-year-olds do,” he said. According to Veronica’s parents, she was seemingly happy with her boyfriend. There was no official engagement but the couple had discussed marriage. And other than a bruise on her face after a weekend with him, there was no established pattern of abuse. Veronica said the injury occurred when she hit her face on a speaker at a polka concert. The matter was dropped. The man’s co-workers reported that he often had angry outbursts but wasn’t known to hurt anyone. And because he has stopped talking to police and there’s been nothing to connecting him to a crime scene, the investigation remains stalled. Although details of Veronica’s rela-
tionship with the second man aren’t clear, information gleaned from sources indicates there was much at stake for keeping it quiet. “What we are fairly certain of is that the man Veronica was secretly seeing w a s ma r r ie d,” T r uc k enbro d s a id. “He was someone who was familiar to her and not someone she had recently met.” Truckenbrod said the latest development may be related to a report that a man, who some claim was an off-duty police officer, was spotted inside Dempsey’s SuperValu the evening of Sept. 19, before Veronica ended her shift and drove home. The man, who reportedly was in the market for approximately 30 minutes without making a purchase, was never questioned or mentioned in a police report. “We find it incredibly frustrating knowing that police went through the trouble of locating some of Veronica’s old boyfriends but did not dig deep enough into other relationships we are finding about now. He needs to be questioned without a doubt,” Truckenbrod said. That questioning may not come any time soon. That’s why Truckenbrod is turning part of his investigation toward
an area near the Blumhorst garage. He is currently working with neighbors, some of whom still live on or around Monroe Street, to find possible clues that Veronica visited an adjacent property before she vanished. Doing so, he said, could tie up loose ends about her romantic relationships and her last night at the grocery store. What Truckenbrod is expecting to discover on nearby property, he isn’t certain. It’s been nearly 30 years; a lot could be lost. But not much about the neighborhood has changed. With the exception of minor upgrades, the houses are largely as they were in 1990, leading him to believe that if something of note has been preserved, there’s no reason it can’t be found. And because Truckenbrod and others on his team are familiar with Mendota, they have an advantage – access to some of the properties, even ones occupied by new families. Anyone with information about the disappearance of Veronica Blumhorst i s u r ge d to cont ac t t he Mendot a Police Department at 815-539-9331 and mendotapd@mendotapolice.com.
Chicago Shooting
13 wounded in shooting at Chicago memorial for slain person Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — One person has been charged in connection with a shooting early Sunday at a house party that left 13 people wounded, four of them critically, Chicago police said. The shooting stemmed from a dispute at the memorial party, Chief of Patrol Fred Waller said at a news conference. He said shots were first fired just after 12:30 a.m. The party was being held in honor of someone who was killed in April. Chicago police announced Sunday evening that Marciano White, 37, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. White was arrested a short distance from where the party was being held, authorities said. The victims range in age from 16 to
48 and suffered “different and various gunshot wounds to their bodies.” Waller said police recovered a revolver. “It looked like they were just shooting randomly at people as they exited the party,” Waller said. Waller did not provide details on the person who was being memorialized, including that person’s identity. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who visited victims on Sunday, said the party was celebrating the birthday of a person who had been killed. Waller described three different shooting scenes at the residential location in the city’s Englewood neighborhood, a predominantly low-income stretch of the city roughly 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of downtown that has high crime. The shooting started inside, then
more shots were fired as people began spilling out of the house. Shots were also fired at a third place nearby, Waller said. He described the shooting as an “isolated incident.” The shooting comes as the city has been on the verge of closing out 2019 with sizable drops in shootings and homicides for the third straight year. Through roughly mid-December, about 475 people were killed, compared with 549 in 2018, which is a 14% drop. In 2016, the number of homicides was roughly 750, according to Chicago police data. The declines happened city wide, including in historically high-crime areas. Still, Chicago still has more violent crime than New York and Los Angeles. Both cities had about 1,800 shooting victims combined, while Chicago has had
about 2,500 this year, according to the Chicago Tribune, which tracks shootings. Police have credited Chicago’s drop in crime to the use of technology used to predict where shootings might occur, while experts also credit anti-violence programs that offer jobs and gang conflict mediation. Lightfoot, who met with victims at the University of Chicago Hospital, urged those with information about the shooting to come forward, even if they want to do so anonymously. “It’s a terrible tragedy and frankly an incredible act of cowardice,” she told reporters. “People in that house know what happened and we’ve urged them to overcome their fears and come forward with information.”

Out with the Old, in with the…Old? By Paula Hendrickson Contributor
For some people the days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve are spent exchanging less-than-perfect gifts, shopping post-Christmas clearance sales, or working. Others might revel in a little extra downtime at home. And there will always be those who use the waning days of the year to get organized and plan for the coming year. The same is true of New Year’s Eve. Maybe you like to celebrate with a large group of friends, have a nice family dinner, or settle in for a quiet evening at home. There’s no right or wrong way to ring out one year and welcome the next. Just as there’s no longer any single must-see live New Year’s Eve broadcast for those who opt to stay in.
Guy Lombardo’s big New Year’s Eve show eventually gave way to Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve (now hosted by Ryan Seacrest). While that’s become a longheld tradition for many, it’s not the only program being broadcast live from Times Square. Fox has Fox’s New Year’s Eve with Steve Harvey: Live from Times Square; Carson Daly hosts NBC’s New Year’s Eve 2020, and CNN has New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. Want something with fewer shots of intoxicated bystanders? You might want to try PBS’s New York Philharmonic New Year’s Eve 2019: Sondheim Celebration. If 2019 was a tough year and you need a little escapism – and aren’t interested in football bowl games – there are always TV marathons. Here’s a tiny sampling of what’s on:
BBC America’s Doctor Who marathon – which started December 24th – culminates with a new episode, “Spyfall, Part 1,” debuting at 7 p.m. CT on New Year’s Day. (The new season resumes with “Spyfall, Part 2” at 7 p.m. CT on Sunday, January 5.) Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek is a critical darling for a reason: It’s a family comedy with heart, centered on quirky characters brought to life by comic geniuses like Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy. Only after it started streaming on Netflix did a larger audience finally discover this little gem, barely in time to watch its final season, which starts in January. If you haven’t checked it out yet, tune into PopTV’s two-day marathon, beginning December 31 at 11 a.m. CT. Over New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, USA will be airing back-to-back-to-back

episodes of one of TV’s longest-running dramas, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. And there’s always Syfy’s annual marathon of The Twilight Zone, which starts at 5 a.m. CT on the 31st. Even if your favorite channels aren’t holding all-day or multi-day marathons, most seem to be airing multi-hour blocks of their most popular shows. If you can’t find something that interests you on linear channels, you can always find something to binge watch on your favorite streaming services. When you think of it, it’s kind of funny that networks like Syfy were doing marathons like these long before any of us ever heard the term “binge watching.” Clearly, they were onto something.

Khashoggi killing
Saudis sentence 5 people to death for Khashoggi’s killing By Abdullah Al-Shihri and Aya Batrawy Associated Press
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) – A court in Saudi Arabia sentenced five people to death Monday for the killing of Washington Post columnist and royal family critic Jamal Khashoggi, whose grisly slaying in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul drew international condemnation and cast a cloud of suspicion over Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Three other people were found guilty by Riyadh’s criminal court of covering up the crime and were sentenced to a combined 24 years in prison, according to a statement read by the Saudi attorney general’s office on state TV. In all, 11 people were put on trial in Saudi Arabia over the killing. The names of those found guilty were not disclosed by the government. Executions in the kingdom are carried out by beheading, sometimes in public. All the verdicts can be appealed. A small number of diplomats, including from Turkey, as well as members of Khashoggi’s family were allowed to attend the nine court sessions, though independent media were barred. The trial concluded the killing was not premeditated, according to Shaalan al-Shaalan, a spokesperson from the attorney general’s office. That finding is in line with the Saudi government’s official explanation, which has been called into question by evidence that a hit team of Saudi agents with tools was sent to dispatch Khashoggi. While the case in Saudi Arabia has largely concluded, questions linger outside Riyadh about the crown prince’s culpability in the slaying. Amnesty International pronounced the outcome a “whitewash.” Agnes Callamard, who investigated the killing for the United Nations, condemned the trial as a “mockery of justice,” saying, “The fact that that the chain of command and the state have not been investigated means that the system that made it possible for Jamal Khashoggi to be killed has not been touched.” “The decision is too unlawful to be acceptable,” Khashoggi’s Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, said in a text message to The Associated Press. “It is unacceptable.” Khashoggi, who was a resident of the U.S., had walked into his country’s consulate on Oct. 2, 2018, for an appointment to pick up documents that would allow him to marry. He never walked out, and his body has not been found. A team of 15 Saudi agents had flown to Turkey to meet Khashoggi inside the
consulate. They included a forensic doctor, intelligence and security officers and individuals who worked for the crown prince’s office, according to Callamard’s independent investigation. Turkish officials allege Khashoggi was killed and then dismembered with a bone saw. The slaying stunned Saudi Arabia’s Western allies and immediately raised questions about how the high-level operation could have been carried out without the knowledge of Prince Mohammed – even as the kingdom insists the crown prince had nothing to do with the killing. In an interview in September with CBS’ “60 Minutes”, Prince Mohammed said: “I take full responsibility as a leader in Saudi Arabia.” But he reiterated that he had no knowledge of the operation, saying he could not keep such close track of the country’s millions of employees. The prince’s father, King Salman, ordered a shake-up of top security posts after the killing. Turkey, a rival of Saudi Arabia, has used the killing on its soil to pressure the kingdom. Turkey, which had demanded the suspects be tried there, apparently had the Saudi Consulate bugged and has shared audio of the killing with the C.I.A., among others. Saudi Arabia initially offered shifting accounts about Khashoggi’s disappearance. As international pressure mounted because of the Turkish leaks, the kingdom eventually settled on the explanation that he was killed by rogue officials in a brawl. The 101-page report released this year by Callamard, the U.N. special rapporteur for extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions, included details from the audio Turkish authorities shared with her. She reported hearing Saudi agents waiting for Khashoggi to arrive and one of them asking how they would carry out the body. Not to worry, the doctor said. “Joints will be separated. It is not a problem,” he said in the audio. “If we take plastic bags and cut it into pieces, it will be finished. We will wrap each of them.” Khashoggi had spent the last year of his life in exile in the U.S. writing in the Post about human rights violations in Saudi Arabia. At a time when Prince Mohammed’s social reforms were being widely hailed in the West, Khashoggi’s columns criticized the parallel crackdown on dissent the prince was overseeing. Numerous critics of the Saudi crown prince are in prison and face trial on national security charges. In Washington, Congress has said it believes Prince Mohammed is “responsible for the murder.” President Donald Trump
has condemned the killing but has stood by the 34-year-old crown prince and defended U.S.-Saudi ties. Washington has sanctioned 17 Saudis suspected of being involved. Among those sanctioned is Saud al-Qahtani, a hawkish former adviser to the crown prince. The Saudi attorney general’s office said Monday that al-Qahtani was investigated and had no proven involvement in the killing. Meanwhile, Ahmed al-Asiri, also a former adviser to the crown prince who was deputy head of intelligence, was tried and released because of insufficient evidence, the attorney general’s office said. The court also ordered the release of Saudi Arabia’s consul-general in Istanbul at the time, Mohammed al-Otaibi. He is among those sanctioned by the U.S. over his “involvement in gross violations of human rights.” The U.S. State Department has also issued travel bans against his immediate family. One of Kashoggi’s sons, Salah, who lives
in Saudi Arabia, tweeted after the verdicts that the Saudi judicial system “was fair to us and achieved justice.” In Turkey, Yasin Aktay, a member of Turkey’s ruling party and a friend of Khashoggi’s, criticized the verdict, saying the Saudi court had failed to bring the real perpetrators to justice. “The prosecutor sentenced five hit men to death but did not touch those who were behind the five,” Aktay said. Although Khashoggi’s killing tarnished Prince Mohammed’s reputation in the West, he is hugely popular at home, especially among young Saudis happy with the social changes he has ushered in. Some American executives who had stayed away because of the backlash over the slaying have resumed doing business with the kingdom. Saudi Arabia over the past months has opened the previously closed-off country to tourists and travelers from around the world as part of a push to boost the economy and change perceptions of the kingdom.

Winter adventures BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL CONTRIBUTORS
Deciding on fruit for the backyard BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR
The winter still remains a perfect time to decide what fruit you might look to plant this spring. Commonly at the University of Illinois Extension oce, we’ll be asked about fruit trees, bushes, and/or brambles that would make good choices to plant. Today’s article provides some additional thoughts as to what can be grown and issues to consider. Fruit trees can take 3-4 years to produce. During those initial years, hard winters and drought can eect the likelihood of yield. You will find standard, dwarf, and semi-dwarf types. Since a standard tree can reach 25-40 feet tall, you might want to stick with a dwarf/ semi-dwarf tree that will mature to a height between 10 to 15 feet. Apple, pear, peach, apricot, and cherry are all suitable fruit trees for the backyard. For apples and pears to produce, you need more than one variety. Peach and cherry are wind pollinated and you can plant just one tree. Cherry, peach, and apricot do not yield every year. Their fruit buds cannot survive when air temperature reach below -8F for consecutive days. Small fruits like blueberry, raspberry, and some very hardy blackberry varieties can do well in Northern Illinois. Blueberry
plants need acidic soil and most likely your soil pH will need to be lowered. You can lower it but it can take months to do. Raspberry plants need to be pruned each year as some will produce on two year old canes. These plants need some sort of structure to keep them in place. Strawberry plants can do well in Northern Illinois but a rainy June can create some problems. For each fruit, recognize that they are perennial and will be coming back year-after-year. You want to do additional research on these crops as you’ll be spending more money on them. Each crop has it’s own insect and disease issues too. You need to prune most of these every year. I also find it important to consider what a spray program can look like. While it is your decision to spray pesticides, know that some years can be harder on these fruit plants compared to others and having an understanding of your spray options is crucial. Deer and other wildlife love fruit trees and plants. Have a strategy to keep wildlife away from your fruit. Grant McCarty is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension. His tips and tricks for local eating and your at-home garden appear every week in The Rock River Times.
As children of the depression and deprivations of World War II, we looked forward to Christmas and the many practical gifts we received such as gloves, socks, scarves and an occasional big present like a board game to play with our siblings and friends. Some of the presents included items like sleds and ice skates to enjoy for the remainder of the winter. In general we were happy with what we received and looked forward to the event. Given the general economic conditions none of the other kids in our neighborhood received any outlandish gifts which could have generated a measure of envy within us. There was always a mixture of some wanted and some unexpected gifts which assured a measure of satisfaction. We looked forward to outdoor activities with friends and the Christmas gifts supported those interests. Early in our teaching careers we looked forward to Christmas breaks and made some simple expeditions. A number of times we hiked in a snowstorm and delighted in visiting the home of a former professor of ours. On one such hike we were stopped by a curious and somewhat suspicious policeman in a squad car wondering what we were doing trudging across an open field on the outskirts of town. When a heavy snowstorm hit one year, we merely walked the two miles to a friend’s home and shared the evening with the hosts as others invited to the party all cancelled. Another winter adventure was one that caused a minor disturbance for neighbors bordering the Cedarburg Bog in Wisconsin. We were testing the theories of noted outdoors people advocating the joys of winter camping. A family friend who owned a home adjacent to the Bog allowed us to camp on his property on
the edge of the bog. Sonia’s brother and his friend had laid out their winter abode but quickly and silently retreated to the comfort of our friend’s home when the evening temperature fell to -30°F. We persisted through the night as we kept warm by a wood fire placed a safe distance from the tent with a reflector directing heat into the open end of the tent. Periodically we had to add wood to the fire and when we ran short of firewood we proceeded to chop down a standing dead elm for additional fuel. When the axe struck the tree it sent a ringing sound up and out from the hollow in which we had pitched our tent. When the sound alerted a nearby dog a series of howls and outdoor lights quickly appeared on the exterior of every home we could see. Our chopping was relatively short lived and supplied enough fuel so we did not need to recreate the disturbance. Surprisingly we were not done with our winter adventures and a few years later we spent a weekend at a nature center in Northern Minnesota observing the wolves of the boundary waters for a well organized, informative experience. While the weather was cold it was a mild winter weekend compared to our earlier adventures. This past week we spent a delightful and informative day at the Mississippi Museum and Aquarium. While primarily an indoor experience its exhibits are very well done; informative sta were available to answer any questions we had. We considered the trip as our Christmas gift to ourselves and highly recommend it to others to enjoy and gain additional historic and environmental understandings. Winter outdoor experiences properly done oer another means to reconnect with nature. There are numerous opportunities available through the parks and nature centers in our communities.

OPIOID ABUSE
To battle opioid crisis, some track overdoses in real time BY MICHAEL HILL ASSOCIATED PRESS
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Drug overdose patients rushed to some emergency rooms in New York’s Hudson Valley are asked a series of questions: Do you have stable housing? Do you have food? Times and location of overdoses are noted, too. The information is entered into a new overdose-tracking system that provides near real-time glimpses into the ravages of the opioid-fueled drug crisis. The Hudson Valley Interlink Analytic System is among a number of surveillance systems being adopted around the country by police, government agencies and community groups. While the number of drug overdose deaths appears to have fallen nationally in 2018 for the first time in nearly three decades, the overdose death rate remains about seven times higher than a generation ago. If there’s a spike in overdoses, the system will send text alerts to health administrators and community workers. And system users can see what drugs are being abused for faster and focused responses to the ever-evolving problem. “We can’t get ahead of a situation that’s already passed. This kind of information has to be given almost instantaneously or else the narcotics that we’re trying to track have already been sold, and they’re already on to the next batch,” said Sgt. Julio Fernandez of the New York National Guard’s Counterdrug Task Force, which helped usher in the system.
The Hudson Valley system was adopted earlier this year by two hospitals north of New York City serving areas hard-hit by drug abuse: St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh and Ellenville Regional Hospital. Administrators say nearby Catskill Regional Medical Center is ready to enter information and that Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown will begin data entry next month. Administrators are talking to other hospitals in the region about signing up. When a patient comes in, a nurse or another worker enters data about the overdose and the drug. Patients retain their legally required anonymity, but system users can still glean general information about the age, gender and housing status of people in trouble. The idea is to “get that information out there as eciently and as quickly as we can,” said Daniel Maughan, a senior vice president at St. Luke’s. The data has helped track the rise of fentanyl being laced into cocaine, Fernandez said. Dawn Wilkin, director of prevention services at Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, & Ulster, said the system has guided workers on where to conduct needle cleanup within days, instead of waiting a week or more. Wilkin said there have been no text alerts to warn of a spike in overdoses sent out yet, likely due in part to a drop in overdoses locally. Participation by patients is voluntary. If someone is unresponsive or unwilling to

answer questions, workers enter the data that’s available. Kathy Sheehan, director of emergency and trauma services at St. Luke’s, said many patients cooperate, though there are just as many others who are not willing to speak. “They’re private,” she said, “they’re maybe afraid of the repercussions.” Around the country, workers on the front lines of the opioid crisis are looking to speedier data access as part of their prevention strategy. In northeastern Minnesota, a pilot system involving six hospitals uses information from case reports submitted by emergency room sta to quickly provide health ocials with warnings about overdose clusters or unusual symptoms. The Minnesota Drug Overdose and Substance Use Surveillance Activity system also analyzes blood or urine samples from a subset of patients to be able to detect patient exposure to fentanyl or other substances. In Michigan, the System for Opioid Overdose Surveillance processes data from medical examiners and from EMS encounters in which overdose-reversing naloxone was administered. The system maintained by the University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center sends out reports to county health departments and other users. The most ubiquitous surveillance system is the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program, or ODMAP. The system allows first responders and others to enter data on suspected overdoses,

including locations, times, naloxone dosages, victim ages and suspected drugs. The system designed by the High Intensity Drug Tracking Area program in the Washington/Baltimore area sends out spike alerts to police and other agencies. Launched as a pilot in January 2017, it is now in 48 states. Ocials in Oneida County using ODMAP in upstate New York last month were able to marshal forces after receiving a spike alert notification for 21 overdose reports and four fatalities suspected to be associated with heroin within 15 days. The Hudson Valley system gathers much of the same data as ODMAP, though Wilkin said it also collects information on patients’ housing and transportation status to give system users additional insights into the social conditions of people fighting addictions. The Hudson Valley groups had been logging local overdose data on to a shared Google Document before health-care IT consultant Marisa Barbieri volunteered to create the current system. She designed a dashboard to give users an at-a-glance look overdose trends. She hopes to add a feature to warn where deadly batches of drugs are headed next, similar to how meteorologists track of deadly storms. “We need to be able to predict when a cluster is forming,” she said. “I don’t want to see on the news that 12 people died. I want a system to be watching.” ON AVERAGE, AARP MEMBERS ENJOY

OBITUARY
Baba Ram Dass, spiritual guru and LSD pioneer, dies at 88 BY ASSOCIATED PRESS
HONOLULU (AP) – Baba Ram Dass, the 1960s counterculture spiritual leader who experimented with LSD and traveled to India to find enlightenment, returning to share it with Americans, has died. He was 88. Dass’ foundation, Love Serve Remember, announced late Sunday that the author and spiritual leader died peacefully at his home earlier in the day. No cause of death was given. He had suered a severe stroke in 1997 that left him paralyzed on the right side and, for a time, unable to speak. More recently, he underwent hip surgery after he was injured in a fall in November 2008, according to his website. “I had really thought about checking out, but your love and your prayers convinced me not to do it. ... It’s just beautiful,” he told followers in a videotaped message at the time from his hospital bed in Hawaii. Over the years, Ram Dass — born Richard Alpert – associated with the likes of Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg. He wrote about his experiences with drugs, set up projects to help prisoners and those facing terminal illness and sought to enlighten others about the universal struggle with aging. But he was best known for the 1971 book “Be Here Now,” written after his trip to India. The spiritual primer found its way into thousands of backpacks around the world. “I want to share with you the parts of the internal journey that never get written up in the mass media,” he wrote. “I’m not interested in what you read in the Saturday Evening Post about LSD. This is the story of what goes on inside a human being who is
undergoing all these experiences.” Among his other books were “How Can I Help?” and “Compassion in Action” and “Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing, and Dying.” “In the ‘60s, I was an uncle for a movement,” he told The Associated Press in 1998. “I was always showing people where they could go. I went east, and then there was a big movement east.” Now, he said, “the baby boomers are getting old – and I’m learning how to get old for them. That’s my role.” The Boston-born son of a prominent attorney, Ram Dass entered the public sphere in the early 1960s as a young Harvard psychology professor. Alpert, as he was then known, earned a doctorate at Stanford University. He and Leary, a Harvard colleague, began a series of experiments with hallucinogenic mushrooms and LSD, giving the drugs to prisoners, philosophers and students to study their eects. Ram Dass later wrote that he tried psilocybin, the compound found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, in Leary’s living room. “I peered into the semidarkness and recognized none other than myself in cap and gown and hood,” he wrote. “It was as if that part of me, which was a Harvard professor, had separated or dissociated itself from me.” The experiments got him and Leary kicked out of Harvard in 1963. “It was a little too sensational,” Ram Dass said in 1998. “We were the starters of it.” He and Leary retreated to an upstate New York mansion that drew Beat Generation figures Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac.

By the late 1960s, LSD and other hallucinogens had become part of pop culture and a rite of passage for many young Americans. But Alpert eventually sought a way to reach a state of enlightenment without drugs. Following Ginsberg’s advice, he headed to India in 1967, where he met the man who became his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. There, his guru introduced him to yoga, meditation, Buddhism and Sufism, and gave him the name Ram Dass, Hindi for “servant of God.” (He is often called Baba Ram Dass; “baba” is an honorary title.) Ram Dass wrote “Be Here Now” when he returned to the United States. Around the same time, he told The New York Times that he had turned away from drugs, saying: “I don’t want to break the law, since that leads to fear and paranoia.” In 1974, Ram Dass founded the Hanuman Foundation, which set up programs such as the Prison Ashram Project to introduce inmates to spirituality. He also helped create the Seva Foundation, which works to prevent blindness and helps community groups in developing countries. His Love Serve Remember Foundation is dedication to preserving his teachings and those of Neem Karoli Baba. Ram Dass lived for many years in the quiet town of San Anselmo, California, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of San Francisco, surrounded by the markers of his life straddling East and West: Japanese prints and statues of Buddha, seashells from the South Pacific and a well-used player piano. In later years, he moved to Woodside, California. More recently, he was based in Maui. He said his 1997 stroke brought physical
and spiritual suering, but that he came to see the suering as a source of insight that he could share with others facing their own battles with illness and aging. “It’s brought out new aspects of myself and aspects of my relationship to the world,” he said in 1998. The stroke has gotten me into a stage of life — this is a stage close to death, a stage which is inward.” After regaining his speech, Ram Dass returned to the lecture circuit, starting by touring Northern California sharing tales of what he called his state of “heavy grace.” “All illnesses are part of the passing show,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2004. “You are not just your body. You are the witness of your body.” He had a falling out with Leary in the 1970s after rumors surfaced that the latter, jailed on drug and prison-break charges, oered to provide authorities with information on others involved in the drug culture in exchange for a lighter sentence. But the pair had reconciled in the years before Leary’s death in 1996, joking back and forth and praising one another as they made joint appearances at lectures. When Leary was on his deathbed, Ram Dass came to visit after Leary asked for advice on how best to let go of life. “The mythic level that Timothy and I lived at was that we were adventurers,” he said in the 2014 documentary, “Dying to Know: Ram Dass & Timothy Leary.” Although speaking of Leary, Ram Dass added an epithet that also could be his own: “If you have identified with your soul when you are alive, death is just another moment.”

WEEK OF DECEMBER 22 TO 28, 2019
Horoscope AQUARIUS, PISCES AND ARIES
THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK:
ARIES
With the holidays just around the corner, you’ll decide to concentrate on your relationship. Take time between obligations to put your worries to rest. Try to have some fun and maybe even take off on an adventure.
TAURUS
Unexpectedly, your boss will give you new responsibilities that look strangely like a promotion and a generous pay increase to match. Venturing into the unknown could mean personal and professional success.
GEMINI
If you’re single, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to meet someone interesting. Your interpersonal skills will help you find a solution to a family conflict and ensure a harmonious holiday season.
CANCER
Even if it wasn’t the plan, almost all the holiday festivities will take place at your home, so get ready. You’ll need to approach certain family members with sensitivity.
LEO
You’ll probably make a spectacle of yourself in one way or another. At work, your efforts will be recognized before the end of the year. In love, this is a magical time for marriage proposals.
VIRGO
You’ll try to stick to a budget, but your generosity will get the better of you as you spoil your loved ones. You may also be faced with an unexpected expense. Luckily, you’ll be generously compensated for working overtime.
LIBRA
You may be the one to try to make everyone smile. You may consider buying yourself a new car for Christmas. Be careful on the road.
SCORPIO
As we reach the end of the year, you may start to feel exhausted. Eating well will help and give you the energy you’ll need to celebrate properly.
SAGITTARIUS
An adventurer at heart, you’ll inspire your family to try new activities during the holidays. Sparing no expense, you’ll spontaneously book a plane ticket, hotel room or something else to bring your loved ones together in an enchanting environment.
CAPRICORN
Don’t wait until your guests arrive to decorate and prepare for the party. It would be good to learn to let go in order to appreciate the moment and accept that things aren’t always perfect.
AQUARIUS
Your social nature helps you bring a record number of people to your next bash. Likewise, you’ll be surprised when everyone in your family accepts your invitation, meaning there will be more people than ever at your holiday dinner.
PISCES
You’ll find yourself with more responsibility than expected when certain people who were supposed to help don’t show up. Your boss may need you when you’re trying to spend time with your family.

ROCKFORD - When injuries hamper an NHL team, the club’s affiliates commonly lose key players, causing lineup changes, special-teams shakeups and, all too often, piles of losses. But that’s not been so for the Rockford IceHogs after losing five guys to the deeply wounded Blackhawks this month. With Matthew Highmore, Dylan Sikura, Dennis Gilbert, Adam Boqvist and John Quenneville filling in up top, the ‘Hogs have continued to thrive and are seriously chasing the division-leading Milwaukee Admirals. Quenneville was recalled Dec. 22, as Chicago’s Brandon Saad was placed on injured reserve last week. Quenneville has skated 19 contests with Rockford this season and has registered 13 points. The 23-year-old New Jersey Devils draft pick posted a four-game point streak from Dec. 13-20 and logged four goals and four assists in his last five contests. Quenneville has combined for 132 points (54g, 78a) in 157 career AHL games and five points (2g, 3a) in 33 career NHL games with New Jersey from 2016-19. Boqvist was recalled Dec. 9 for his second stint with the Blackhawks this year. The offensive-minded rookie defenseman has a goal and five assists with Rockford and a goal and two assists for Chicago in 13 NHL games. The Blackhawks also called for IceHogs alternate captain Matthew Highmore Dec. 9, leaving Rockford without that regular name on its scoresheets. Before the callup, Highmore was third on the team in overall scoring with three points in his last five games. The third-year pro has four goals and eight assists in 21 AHL contests but hasn’t potted an NHL marker yet this season. He’s getting solid ice time though and has skated in eight games in two weeks. Sikura is still without his first NHL goal, but produces them quite regularly in a Rockford sweater. In 22 games, the younger Sikura brother has registered nine goals

and seven assists with 99 shots on goal. He was leading the club in goals and shared the lead in overall scoring with brother Tyler when he was called up Dec. 8. He has 11 assists in 41 games with the Blackhawks over the last two seasons. Gilbert has skated in 10 games since his Dec. 4 call-up, his second of the campaign. Before being recalled this month, his last appearance with Chicago was on Oct. 29 and his 6.5 hits per game average was more than any other Blackhawks skater. The moves have left the ‘Hogs with some holes, ones coach Derek King and General Manager Mark Bernard have looked to their bench and the ECHL Indy Fuel to fill. And so far there’s been no complaints. Rockford has continued what it was building before the roster depletion. The club is 15-0-1 when it scores three or more goals, a stat indicative of how the stable of young skaters is handling the increased pressures of the pro game. “They’re filling the void,” King said. “And our guys are getting a little more ice time, (guys) that don’t usually play in these situations. And they’re doing a great job. Our guys are a team. They’re solid and they don’t quit.” Tyler Sikura still leads the IceHogs with 17 points. Following close behind are guys with little or no pro experience. Forward Brandon Hagel has nine goals and six assists in 28 games. Swiss prospect Philipp Kurashev has logged five goals and 10 assists, while defenseman Philip Holm is fourth in scoring with three goals and 11 helpers. In his second pro season, defenseman Lucas Carlsson is also jumping more into the offensive play, something he’ll continue with a thinned blue-line corps. “There’s a lot of young guys here,” Carlsson, 22, said. “They’ve got to step up. And they’ve been doing great. That’s the key.” The IceHogs are currently in third place in the AHL Central Division. They skate with Iowa Friday at home before hitting the road for a three-game slate.

Count to 10. The Mahomes’ nightmare remains BY ROBERT ZEGLINSKI CONTRIBUTOR
Patrick Mahomes knew what he was doing. He will deny it to the end in public circles. He may keep it as a valuable secret he only shares and laughs over with his closest family and friends; the key to the lock never being revealed. But Mahomes had a premeditated plan when he used his fingers to count to 10 in the midst of a Sunday night 26-3 pre-Christmas evisceration of the Bears. “10” for his draft slot in what increasingly looks like the biggest blunder nine other teams will make this century. “10” for how long football’s arguable best player was forced to wait, and for how he was forced to have his patience tested before becoming the face of the game. “10” for his struggling peer Mitchell Trubisky’s jersey designation, a player selected eight slots ahead of the transcendent Mahomes in the same draft. A player who himself helps twist the knife on his failure more and more with every agonizing week. “10” for what could’ve been for the Bears. “10” for might’ve been for a franchise again on the ropes. “10” for what will never, ever be. “I don’t know why a lot of things come out when I do celebrations, but I just try to go out there and enjoy it,” said Mahomes of his moment in front a muted, capacity Soldier crowd. “I know I can’t dance or anything like that, so I leave that to the receivers. I just do what I can do.”
What is humiliating for the Bears is that Mahomes sticking to “what he can do” is still miles and away better than their current quarterback situation. There was always the danger of presenting the chasm, nay, the canyon between Mahomes and Trubisky in front of a national audience. A secondary perspective at least allows for some dissonance and denial of a harsh reality. The mistake that can never be rectified and will reverberate for the Bears for decades to come can be ignored from a distance. Once Pandora’s Box is opened and Mahomes has his opportunity for vengeance, the first hand point of view annihilates all litigation. There is no denying the truth when it’s picking you apart seam by seam in front of your face, rocket throw by rocket throw, and finger by finger in a justified taunt. The Bears missed on Trubisky. Mahomes knows the Bears missed on Trubisky and could’ve had him instead. And there was no one better to remind them of their incompetence, their swing and a miss, better than the man himself. Justice isn’t always served in such a harsh fashion, but then again it also doesn’t bash you over the head with a frying pan as soon as you look away. Mahomes took his liberties, made his stance known, and then drove right back onto the high road in a manner anyone could respect. The Bears looking listless, as if they had already surrendered the rest of their season while led by Trubisky, was almost too poetic in response.
There’s a danger in hindsight decision-making. Whatever looks correct in hindsight is the correct answer because there’s a benefit of possessing every necessary context, background knowledge, and outcome. But the Bears don’t receive the benefit of being defended by the crux of hindsight. General manager Ryan Pace and his scouts are paid, handsomely so, to make the right decision in the moment. When it comes to Trubisky and Mahomes, hindsight says the Bears (who had Mahomes as their No. 2 prospect) air-balled their move on a quarterback of the future. They don’t receive the benefit of the doubt. That doubt is reserved for lesser stakes, lesser moments. You hit, or you miss. There is only adulation for the hit, and only consternation and criticism for the miss. Grey area is a luxury reserved for those who earn it, or those who have an understanding of the color spectrum. It’s somewhere in between. Saying hindsight is 20/20 is the crutch every failure leans on in crisis, and the Bears in their decision to invest everything in Trubisky are no dierent. NFL players physically gifted human beings are on higher planes of athleticism. They can accomplish athletic feats anyone watching their exploits on the couch could never even dream of, let alone conceive. But they remain human to their core. They are motivated by the same slights, warranted or perceived, as their viewing audience. They are pushed by the same demons and detractors alike. Being overlooked and cast
HEARING HELP
o by supposed superiors and evaluators and peers drives their internal success as much as any obstacle a Regular Old Joe has to hurdle. As special as he is and as bright as his career looks to be, Mahomes will never forget his personal embarrassment on a late night in April of 2017. Nine other teams, including the Trubisky-Bears, could have drafted him. He’ll be reminded of that short wait in the green room for the rest of his waking life. Anyone with working brain cells, the Trubisky-Bears once more included, may find it hard to wipe from their own respective memories. And Mahomes, as talented as he is, would never have it any other way. The Bears would use every science fiction time machine if they could to walk back their mistake. Now that they know what they’re missing has a working vendetta, their guilt will never dissipate. Mahomes knew what he was doing, and the Bears didn’t. That’s why someone is getting candy canes for Christmas, and the other has coals waiting in their stocking. “I ended up in a great situation in Kansas City. A situation where I wanted to be,” Mahomes said. “An organization that’s kind of taken me and made me the best player that I could be at this time.” Robert is a writer, editor, and producer.
