Illinois COVID-19 death toll hits 16,000 IDPH reports 4,453 cases of COVID-19 and 105 additional deaths Monday By Raymon Troncoso

Capitol News Illinois rtroncoso@capitolnewsillinois.com

SPRINGFIELD – While the number of new COVID-19 cases and people hospitalized in Illinois continue to decline, the state’s coronavirus death toll has surpassed 16,000. An additional 105 deaths were reported Monday by the Illinois Department of Public Health. That brings the total COVID-19 deaths in Illinois to 16,074 among 942,362 cases and more than 13 million test results reported. The IDPH on Monday reported 4,453 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19

in Illinois. Statewide, the rolling seven-day average case positivity rate from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27 was 7.2 percent. That is three-tenths of a percentage point lower than the seven-day average case positivity rate reported on Dec. 23, the last day IDPH released COVID data before the holiday weekend. That makes one week of rates below 8 percent. At the end of Sunday, there were 4,243 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Illinois, a decrease of 350 from Dec. 23. There were 884 intensive care beds in use by COVID-19 patients as of Sunday night, a decrease of 69 from Dec. 23. That left 840, or just over 25 percent, of ICU beds available statewide. COVID-19 patients occupied 515 ventilators, a decrease of 21 from the Wednesday prior to the holiday weekend. That left

4,205 ventilators, or 73.7 percent of all ventilators, available for use across the state. More than 112,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Illinois since the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were approved for emergency use earlier this month. On Sunday, President Trump signed a bill granting $900 billion in COVID-19 aid, which includes a direct payment up to $600 dollars to some Americans. The bill also includes funds for vaccine distribution and boosts in weekly unemployment benefits. Quincy veterans home resident tests positive for Legionnaires’ disease IDVA, IDPH are investigating the case By Sarah Mansur

Capitol News Illinois smansur@capitolnewsillinois.com

SPRINGFIELD — A resident at the state-run veterans home in Quincy has tested positive for both COVID-19 and Legionnaires’ disease, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and the Illinois Department of Public Health announced on Wednesday the agencies are investigating the case of Legionnaires’ disease in a single resident, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 30 and showed pneumonia symptoms on Dec. 16, according to the news release. The Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy was notified on Dec. 22 of the resident’s positive test for Legionnaires’ disease, which is a severe pneumonia caused by the inhalation of waterborne bacteria. No other residents have tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease, according to an IDVA spokesperson. The positive resident lives in Hammond Hall, which had not previously reported the presence of Legionella, the type of bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. Hammond Hall is one of six residential halls at the Quincy facility in Adams County.

After the positive Legionnaire’s test was reported on Dec. 22, Quincy facility staff and officials with the Adams County Health Department spoke by phone with representatives from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Dr. Avery Hart, who is a medical consultant for the IDVA homes on behalf of IDPH, according to the news release. “On the call, the CDC asked for clean-out and flushing logs which are part of the water management plan for the facility. All actions by the Illinois Veterans’ Home in Quincy are consistent with the water management plan following CDC protocols,” according to the IDVA news release. “IDPH infectious disease staff are working with the facility to collect information and further investigate the resident’s illness.” On Monday, an IDVA spokesperson said the resident who tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease and COVID-19 is responding well to treatment. The last legionella test at Hammond Hall was conducted Oct. 27 and was negative, according to the IDVA release. The last case of Legionnaires’ disease was reported at the Quincy facility on Dec. 21, 2019, in Fifer Hall, according to the release. An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease between 2015 and 2018 killed 13 residents at Quincy. The single incident of Legionnaires’

disease at the Quincy home comes as the facility also faces an outbreak of COVID-19. As of Dec. 26, the Quincy facility has reported five resident deaths related to COVID-19, 123 total positive cases among residents and 143 total positive cases among employees since the pandemic began. The state-run veterans homes at Manteno and LaSalle have also reported COVID-19 outbreaks, prompting Gov. JB Pritzker last month to send members of the Illinois National Guard to assist staff with administrative tasks at all three veterans homes experiencing outbreaks. As of Dec. 26, the Manteno facility has reported a total of 19 resident coronavirus-related deaths. Since the outbreak began, Manteno has reported 69 positive cases among residents and 69 positive cases among employees. As of Dec. 27, the LaSalle facility has reported 34 resident deaths related to COVID-19 since Nov. 1. Since the start of the pandemic, 108 residents at LaSalle have tested positive and 105 employees have tested positive. Three legislative committees are investigating the administration’s response to the LaSalle outbreak, and the Illinois Department of Human Services’ acting inspector general has also announced an investigation into the deaths at LaSalle.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday blocked Democrats’ push to immediately bring President Donald Trump’s demand for bigger $2,000 COVID-19 relief checks up for a vote, saying the chamber would “begin a process” to address the issue. Pressure is mount ing on the Republican-led Senate to follow the House, which voted overwhelmingly on Monday to meet the president’s demand to increase the checks from $600 as the virus crisis worsens. A growing number of Republicans, including two senators in runo elections on Jan. 5 in Georgia, have said they will support the larger amount. But most GOP senators oppose more spending, even if they are also wary of bucking Trump. The outcome is highly uncertain heading into the rare holiday-week session. “There’s one question left today: Do Senate Republicans join with the rest of America in supporting $2,000 checks?” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said as he made a motion to vote. McConnell, who has said little publicly on Trump’s request, objected but gave almost no indication of his plans ahead. “The Senate will begin a process,” the GOP leader said. He said he plans to bring the president’s demand for the $2,000 checks and other remaining issues “into focus.” The showdown has thrown Congress into a chaotic year-end session just days before new lawmakers are set to be sworn into oce for the new year. It’s preventing action on another priority — overturning Trump’s veto on a sweeping defense bill that has been approved every year for 60 years. The president’s last-minute push for bigger checks deeply divides Republicans, who are split between those who align with Trump’s populist instincts and those who adhere to what had been more traditional conservative views against government spending. Congress had settled on smaller $600 payments in a compromise over the big year-end relief bill Trump reluctantly signed into law. Liberal senators led by Bernie Sanders of Vermont who support the relief aid are blocking action on the defense bill until a vote can be taken on Trump’s demand for $2,000 for most Americans. “The working class of this country today faces more economic desperation than at any time since the Great Depression of the 1930s,” Sanders said

as he also tried to force a vote on the relief checks. “Working families need help now.” But McConnell objected a second time. The GOP blockade may not be sustainable in the face of Trump’s demands and as senators face the constituents at home. The two GOP senators from Georgia, Dav id Perdue a nd Kel ly L o ef f ler, a n nou nce d T ue sday t he y supp or t Trump’s plan for bigger checks as they face Democrats Jon Osso and Raphael Warnock in runo elections that will determine which party controls the Senate. “I’m delighted to support the president,” said Perdue on Fox News. Loeer said in an interview on Fox that she, too, backs the boosted relief checks. Trump repeated his demand in a tweet ahead of Tuesday’s Senate session: “$2000 for our great people, not $600!” Following Trump’s lead, Republican Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Marco Rubio of Florida, among the party’s potential 2024 presidential hopefuls, are pushing the party in the president’s direction. “We’ve got the votes. Let’s vote today,” Hawley tweeted. The House vote late Monday was a stunning turn of events. Just days ago, during a brief Christmas Eve session, Republicans blocked Trump’s sudden demand for bigger checks as he defiantly refused to sign the broader COVID-19 aid and year-end funding bill into law. As Trump spent days fuming from his private club in Florida, where he is spending the holidays, millions of Americans saw jobless aid lapse and the nation risked a federal government shutdown Tuesday. Dozens of Republicans calculated it was better to link with Democrats to increase the pandemic payments rather than buck the outgoing president and constituents counting on the money. House Democrats led passage, 275-134, but 44 Republicans joined almost all Democrats for a robust two-thirds vote of approval. In the Senate, McConnell is expected to be devising a way out of the bind, perhaps incorporating two other issues Trump raised Sunday as he ultimately signed the massive package into law. Trump repeated his frustrations over the outcome of the presidential election, which he lost to President-elect Joe Biden, as well as the ability of technology companies like Facebook and Twitter to regulate content in ways Trump believes are unfair. “Those are the three important

subjects the president has linked together,” McConnell said. Trump’s push could fizzle out in the Senate and do little to change the COVID19 relief and federal spending package Trump signed into law. But the debate over the size and scope of the package — $900 billion in COVID-19 aid and $1.4 trillion to fund government agencies — is potentially one last confrontation between the president and the Republican Party. The new Congress is set to be sworn in Sunday. For now, the $600 checks are set to be delivered, along with other aid, among the largest rescue packages of its kind. The COVID-19 portion of the bill revives a weekly pandemic jobless benefit boost — this time $300, through March 14 — as well as the popular Paycheck Protection Program of grants to businesses to keep workers on payrolls. It extends eviction protections, adding a new rental assistance fund. Americans earning up to $75,000 will qualify for the direct $600 payments, which are phased out at higher income levels, and there’s an additional $600 payment per dependent child. Biden told reporters at an event Monday in Wilmington, Delaware, that he supported the $2,000 checks. Economists said a $600 check will help, but that it’s a far cry from the spending power that a $2,000 check would provide for the economy, particularly into summer when vaccinations are expected to have reached a wider swath of the population. “It will make a big dierence whether it’s $600 versus $2,000,” said Ryan Sweet, an economist with Moody’s. Trump’s delay in signing the bill stunned lawmakers, who thought they had the president’s blessing after months of negotiations with his administration. Several sprang into action to push him not to stall aid during the holidays. The president also objected to foreign aid funding that his own administration had requested and vowed to send Congress “a redlined version” with spending items he wants removed. But those are merely suggestions to Congress. Democrats said they would resist such cuts.

Presidential Transition

Biden warns of Trump officials’ ‘roadblocks’ to transition By Alexandra Jaffe Associated Press

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) – Presidentelect Joe Biden is warning of massive damage done to the national security apparatus by the Trump administration and “roadblocks” in communication bet ween agenc y of fic ia ls a nd h is transition team that could undermine Americans’ security. During remarks Monday in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said his team has faced “obstruction” from the “political leadership” at the Defense Department and the Office of Management and Budget as they’ve sought to gather necessary information to continue the transition of power. “Right now we just aren’t getting all the information that we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas. It’s nothing short, in my view, of irresponsibility,” Biden said. He warned that his team needs “full

visibility” into the budget process at the Defense Department “in order to avoid any window of confusion or catch-up that our adversaries may try to exploit.” He also said they need “a clear picture of our force posture around the world and of our operations to deter our enemies.” Biden’s remarks came after he was briefed by members of his national security and defense teams and advisers, including his nominees for secretary of State, Defense and Homeland Security, as well as his incoming national security adviser. The president-elect said his team found that agencies “critical to our security have incurred enormous damage” during President Donald Trump’s time in office. “Many of them have been hollowed out in personnel, capacity and in morale,” he said. “All of it makes it harder for our government to protect the American people, to defend our vital interests in a world where threats are constantly evolving and our adversaries are constantly adapting.” Trump has still refused to concede an election he lost by more than 7 million votes, and his administration did not authorize official cooperation with the Biden transition team until Nov. 23, weeks after the election. Biden and his aides warned at the time that the delay was hampering their ability to craft their own vaccine rollout plan, but have since said cooperation on that and other issues related to COVID-19 has improved. Last week, however, Biden himself said that the Defense Department “won’t even brief us on many things” and suggested because of this, he didn’t have a complete understanding of the full scope of the recent cyberhack that breached numerous government systems. On Monday, Biden said his team still gathering information about the extent of the cyberhack, but described the need to “modernize” America’s defense to deter future such attacks, “rather than continuing to over-invest in legacy systems designed to address the threats of the past.” Pentagon officials pushed back on Biden’s characterization of the disconnect between the Defense Department and the Biden team. Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller said in a statement that the department has conducted 164 interviews with over 400 officials, and provided over 5,000 pages of documents, which is “far more than initially requested by Biden’s transition team.”

Miller also said that his team is continuing to schedule meetings for the remaining weeks of the transition and “answer any and all requests for information in our purview.” Biden also spoke in length about the need to rebuild global alliances, which he said were necessary to combat climate change, address the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for future epidemics, and confront the growing threat posed by China. “Right now, there’s an enormous vacuum. We’re going to have to regain the trust and confidence of a world that has begun to find ways to work around us or without us,” he said. Trump has implemented an “America First” foreign policy that saw the U.S. retreat from longstanding global alliances and treaties. The Trump Administration cut funding from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, withdrew from the World Health Organization and the Paris

Climate Accords. The shift away from international diplomacy also precipitated an exodus of staff from key agencies, like the State Department. Trump himself has had a contentious relationship with the intelligence community, criticizing its findings that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to boost his candidacy. And still other national security agencies have faced staff cuts and unstable leadership throughout Trump’s time in office as the president frequently fired his department heads with little notice, often leaving departments with acting secretaries or vacant positions in their top ranks. The situation has left what experts say is a major morale crisis throughout the federal government, and Biden said Monday that “rebuilding the full set of our instruments of foreign policy and national security is the key challenge” he and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris face when they take office on January 20.

With much of the world eager for 2020 to end, yet unable to go anywhere thanks to the raging pandemic, people are finding different ways to celebrate the new year without leaving their homes. New Year programming stunts abound as always – like Syfy’s annual marathon of The Twilight Zone – but there are feel-good options too. As Hallmark Channel ends its popular wall-to-wall Christmas movies, it launches a “New Year New Movies” event starting January 2. The event consists of five new wintery Hallmark mov ie premieres spread throughout January. Think of them like Christmas movies minus caroling, cookie baking, holiday decorations, and way too much red and green. If you enjoy a wintery vibe and predictably upbeat love stories, chances are you’ll enjoy all five of these movies. Taking a Shot at Love is first up, premiering Saturday, January 2 at 8 p.m. CT. Jenna (Alexa PenaVega) is a former professional dancer and Coop (Luke Macfarlane) is a hockey player recuperating from an injury. Coop reluctantly signs up for private dance classes with Jenna as part of his physical rehab program. There will be an obligatory winter festival, a cozy guest house at Jenna’s farm, and a power outage on a snowy night. A New Year’s Resolution debuts Saturday, January 9 at 8 p.m. CT. Aimee Teegarden stars as Kelly, the producer of a morning show, who resolves to say “yes” to as many

opportunities as possible in the coming year. She soon meets a man, played by Michael Rady, who becomes pivotal to her story, and her heart. Two for the Win, which premieres Saturday, January 16 at 8 p.m. CT, does something slightly different for a Hallmark movie. It centers the plot on the male lead, Justin (Trevor Donovan), a world champion ski racer who comes home to train for a big race, and encounters a local ski instructor, Kayla (Charlotte Sullivan), on the slopes. Something tells me this one will include a bit of snow, and perhaps an apres ski scene or two. Love in the Alps debuts Saturday, January 23 at 8 p.m. CT. You might call this a cautionary tale about assumptions, since an ordinary guy (Brooks Darnell) gets a free luxury vacation and winds up being mistake for a millionaire. Along the way, he and the resort’s concierge (Nazneen Contractor) hit it off, but will the fact that he isn’t rich be a deal breaker for the hardworking concierge? And finally, Snowkissed, premieres Saturday, January 30 at 8 p.m. CT. In this story, a big city writer Kate (Jen Lilley) goes on assignment to Canada and winds up out of her element in the great outdoors with an adventurous tour guide named Noah (Chris McNally). Will any of these movies be nominated for Emmy Awards or Golden Globes? Highly doubtful. But you will feel cozy and warm watching them from the comfort of your own home, especially if it’s snowing outside. Some days, that’s all you need.

Defense Bill

Trump lashes out at GOP after override vote on defense bill By Matthew Daly Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump lashed out at congressional Republicans on Tuesday after the House easily voted to override his veto of a defense policy bill. A total of 109 Republicans, including Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, a member of GOP leadership, joined with Democrats on Monday to approve the override, which would be the first of Trump’s presidency. The Senate is expected to consider the measure later this week. Trump slammed GOP lawmakers on Twitter, charging that “Weak and tired Republican ‘leadership’ will allow the bad Defense Bill to pass.” Trump called the override vote a “disgraceful act of cowardice and total submission by weak people to Big Tech. Negotiate a better Bill, or get better leaders, NOW! Senate should not approve NDAA until fixed!!!” The 322-87 vote in the House sends the override effort to the Senate, where the exact timing of a vote is uncertain. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., wants a vote as soon as Wednesday, but Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders objected to moving ahead until McConnell allows a vote on a Trump-backed plan to increase COVID-19 relief payments to $2,000. “Let me be clear: If Sen. McConnell doesn’t agree to an up or down vote to provide the working people of our country a $2,000 direct payment, Congress will not be going home for New Year’s Eve,’’ said Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. “Let’s do our job.” McConnell said Tuesday that approval of the $740 billion National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, is crucial to the nation’s defense and to “deter great-power rivals like China and Russia.’’ The bill “will cement our advantage on the seas, on land, in the air, in cyberspace and in space,’’ McConnell said. The bill also provides a 3% pay raise for U.S. troops, improvements for military housing, child care and more, McConnell said. “For the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces, failure is not an option. So when it is our turn in Congress to have their backs, failure is not an option here either,’’ he said. Trump rejected the defense measure last week, saying it failed to limit social media companies he claims were biased against him during his failed reelection campaign. Trump also opposes language that allows for the renaming of military bases that honor Confederate leaders. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said

after the House vote that lawmakers have done their part to ensure the NDAA becomes law “despite the president’s dangerous sabotage efforts.’’ Trump’s “reckless veto would have denied our service members hazard-duty pay,’’ removed key protections for global peace and security and “undermined our nation’s values and work to combat racism, by blocking overwhelmingly bipartisan action to rename military bases,’’ Pelosi said. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the bill “absolutely vital to our national security and our troops,’’ adding, “Our men and women who volunteer to wear the uniform shouldn’t be denied what they need — ever.” Trump has succeeded throughout his four-year term in enforcing party discipline in Congress, with few Republicans willing to publicly oppose him. The bipartisan vote on the widely popular defense bill showed the limits of Trump’s influence in the final weeks before he leaves office, and came minutes after 130 House Republicans voted against a Trump-supported plan to increase COVID-19 relief checks to $2,000. The House approved the larger payments, but the plan faces an uncertain future in the Republicancontrolled Senate, another sign of Trump’s fading hold over Congress. Besides social media and military base names, Trump also said the defense bill restricts his ability to conduct foreign policy, “particularly my efforts to bring our troops home.’’ Trump was referring to provisions in the bill that impose conditions on his plan to withdraw thousands of troops from Afghanistan and Germany. The measures require the Pentagon to submit reports certifying that the proposed withdrawals would not jeopardize U.S. national security. The House veto override was supported by 212 Democrats, 109 Republicans and an independent. Twenty Democrats opposed the override, along with 66 Republicans and an independent. The Senate approved the bill 84-13 earlier this month, well above the margin needed to override a presidential veto. Trump has vetoed eight other bills, but those were all sustained because supporters did not gain the two-thirds vote needed in each chamber for the bills to become law without Trump’s signature. Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Trump’s declaration that China benefited from the defense bill was false. He also noted the shifting explanations Trump had given for the veto. “From Confederate base names to social media liability provisions ... to imaginary

and easily refutable charges about China, it’s hard to keep track of President Trump’s unprincipled, irrational excuses for vetoing this bipartisan bill,’’ Reed said. Reed called the Dec. 23 veto “Trump’s parting gift to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and a lump of coal for our troops. Donald Trump is showing more devotion to Confederate base names than to the men and women who defend our nation.’’ Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., chairman of

the House Armed Services Committee, said Trump’s veto “made it clear that he does not care about the needs of our military personnel and their families.’’ The measure guides Pentagon policy and cements decisions about troop levels, new weapons systems and military readiness, personnel policy and other military goals. Many programs, including military construction, can only go into effect if the bill is approved.

Growing stone fruit in northern Illinois BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

If you have eaten a southern Illinois peach before, it might have you wondering if you could grow a peach tree and produce this type of fruit in northern Illinois. The question is yes with some hesitation. While apples and pears grow very well in our climate, stone fruit are a group that tends to have a mix of good and bad seasons. The stone fruit category includes peaches, plums, apricots, and cherries. This group gets the name stone fruit due to their large pits or stones at their center. European plums, some peaches, and tart cherries are recommended for

northern Illinois while apricot and most sweet cherry trees are not recommended. Stone fruit trees are grown in a similar way as you would apples and pears. You will purchase them as dwarf/semi-dwarf, prune them each year, and make sure they are planted in well-drained soil. The reason for a “bad season” for stone fruit is based on our winters. Most stone fruit produces fruit buds the summer before and then must survive winter before finally producing that fruit the following summer. This means that fruit buds of summer 2020 will produce fruit in summer of 2021. Air temperatures of -8° F for consecutive days is the cut o in which these buds will not survive. These

buds may die o or be damaged just for that season. Because these buds may also blossom in late spring, a late frost may result in the fruit not producing that season too. One of the reason we do not recommend sweet cherry trees are that you need more than one variety in order to produce cherries which both need their buds to survive our winters. While the weather is out of your control, one strategy can be to create a windbreak that can help with these vulnerable fruit trees. It may not fully address a cold winter but could at least be a strategy that you could implement. When it comes to growing this group,

you are limited in the number of varieties you could grow. For peaches, ‘Contender’, ‘Reliance’, and ‘Madison’ are the only ones that we recommend. ‘Mountain Royal’, ‘Black Ice’, and ‘Pipestone’ are European type plums that can work too. Tart cherry varieties that can grow well include ‘Nanking’ (bush), ‘Meteor’, ‘Montmorency’, and ‘North Star’. Order your fruit trees from a reliable nursery/greenhouse. These businesses will recommend varieties that grow well in northern Illinois. Expect to have fruit every couple of years due to our winters. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Making holiday memories BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL CONTRIBUTORS

“No one can say I can’t pull off Christmas!” our daughter, Lin, declared after serving our traditional smorgasbord of shrimp, herring, gravlax, ceviche, cucumber sandwiches, cheese, sausage, crackers & bread, hummus, fruit & vegetables, and, of course, cookies. No one would deny that, but they are likely to think of the strange situation in which we had that meal. We usually set out the smorgasbord in the dining room, letting people serve themselves throughout the evening while exchanging gifts. Christmas was bitter cold this year – both the Eve and the Day. Rather than have our big celebration on the Day as many American families do, our family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve, a family tradition that came to America from Germany with our ancestors. The Eve is magical, with stars, candles, and sparkling lights. This year, a novel challenge presented itself to families who want to be together. Covid threatens them. Stay distanced. Don’t have people from dierent households in close proximity. And don’t take o your mask to eat. We met the challenge as we did for

Thanksgiving by having the celebratory dinner for under ten people in the old farm garage. Not an elegant venue, but workable. The sparrows obliged us by staying outside of the garage during set up and dinner. We had a Christmas tree, complete with lights, that Lin had found set out on a curb to be disposed of. Why waste a perfectly acceptable tree and discard precious resources? Three tables were set up six feet part. Lin prepared the food and served plates of it to each table wearing mask and gloves. A small portable CD player completed the mood. When we dispersed, we removed the batteries for another use. Perhaps we thought we were hardened by our below-zero winter camping in the Cedarburg Bog. Of course, we were in our 20s then. One little glitch presented itself with our outdoor dinner: How to deal with the cold? Our mothers’ line was “If you’re cold, put on a sweater.” A sensible way to save heating fuel. Desperate conditions call for creative measures. Dinner was at 2:00 during the height of the sun and the heat of the day; the open door (now a window) facing south. 1970s solar heat. A sheet of chicken house window plastic buered much of the wind but allowed air flow.

We all wore heavy coats and gloves, another passive heating technique (put on a sweater). Of course, long silk or insulated underwear is a must. The one concession to modern tenderness was small propane heaters, each aimed at a table of two (with people from the same household), reminding us of the European tradition of placing a small heater under the dining room table with

the family seated at the table, involved in their individual reading, writing and homework, blankets over their legs retaining heat and fuel. With creative thought, collaboration, and judicious use of heat, these two winter holiday highlights were enjoyed and memorable. With the virus still present, we are making plans for an early New Year’s Eve garage celebration.
