Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, Inc. hosts “Palentine’s Day Adoption Special”: Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, 111 N 1st St., is hosting a “Palentine’s Day Adoption Special” in hopes to get dogs and cats adopted into loving homes. On Friday, February 14 from 12-5 p.m. adopters can adopt cats and dogs at reduced fees. There are many cats and dogs that have been residents of Noah’s Ark for many weeks, if not months. They are all great pets, they just often get overlooked but we know there is someone out there looking for a new pal this Valentine’s Day. They are such sweet cats and dogs so we hope this adoption special will help them to finally find their loving, forever homes. The reduced adoption rates are $25 for a cat over 6 months old and $150 for a dog over 6 months old. Exotic cats and purebred dogs are not included in this adoption special. All of the animals leave Noah’s Ark spayed or neutered, current on all age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipped, and dewormed. They also receive an exam from a veterinarian.

“If you’re looking for a little extra love, please come meet some of our animals. They are all socialized and great with people. We hope this special will help connect them to their purrfect, furever family,” said Brooke Pond, Shelter Manager.

Illinois lawmakers try again to ban certain food additives

Move comes as federal government poised to ban red dye No. 3

lileycarey2025@u.northwestern.edu

For the second legislative session in a row, Sen. Willie Preston, D-Chicago, is pushing to ban several chemicals from Illinois food items.

But this time, Preston and his bipartisan backers have momentum from the federal government on their side.

Senate Bill 93, dubbed the Food Safety Act, passed out of the Senate Public Health Committee Tuesday. It would ban the use of four chemicals in Illinois foods: brominated vegetable oil, red dye No. 3, potassium bromate and propylparaben. All four of these substances have been the subject of scientific studies linking them to elevated health risks over time, and red dye No. 3 has been linked to cancer in animals.

Preston proposed an essentially

identical bill last year, which passed the Senate with bipartisan support but was not called for a vote House. However, this year’s bill comes amid renewed national attention on the issue of food additives. In the past six months, the Food and Drug Administration has moved to ban two of the four substances that Preston’s bill proposes banning in Illinois — brominated vegetable oil and red dye No. 3.

The latter ban was enacted on Jan. 15, just days after Preston reintroduced the Food Safety Act. He said in a news release he intends to amend his bill in line with the recent federal bans.

“Manufacturers already have to comply with California standards, the EU (European Union) standards and now the FDA,” said Sen. Rachel Ventura, D-Joliet, at a Senate Public Health Committee hearing Tuesday. “We’re just asking them to make sure that our state, Illinois, also has those same safe foods.”

The two recent federal bans came “at lightning speed for the FDA,” Preston

said. But the agency has a long history of missing deadlines, Melanie Benesh from the research and advocacy organization Environmental Working Group noted during the hearing.

The ban on red dye No. 3 has been in the works since 1990, when the FDA linked the chemical to cancer in lab rats and to behavioral problems in children. Meanwhile, all four substances that the Food Safety Act proposes banning have been outlawed in Europe and Australia for decades.

Given the FDA’s history of regulatory delays, Preston and other members of the Senate Public Health Committee said Illinois needs to take food additive bans into its own hands.

“I want the FDA to be a leader on this issue, but I cannot allow them the time to be a leader on this issue at the expense of the people of Illinois,” Preston said. California became the first state to ban red dye No. 3 and brominated vegetable oil in 2023, and several other states are currently considering similar bans on food and color additives, including New Jersey, New York, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.

But some legislators believe the recent FDA bans could signal a change to the federal food regulatory process. Sen. Andrew Chesney, R-Freeport, was one of three to vote against the act in committee. He said food additive regulations should be left to the federal government and he expects President Donald Trump “will handle things differently” and move regulations along more quickly.

Sen. Seth Lewis, R-Bartlett, one of four Republicans to support the bill last session, is a chief co-sponsor on this year’s effort.

“Make no mistake — food, and the security of our food and the quality of our food, is a bipartisan issue,” Lewis said at a Wednesday news conference. “We need to make sure that what our children are eating helps them grow to be accomplished individuals here in our society. That is not partisan, that is bipartisan.”

Existential risks: the endgame

In an interview with Nate Hagens of The Great Simplification, Luke Kemp, a researcher at the Center for the Study of Existential Risks, discusses what he refers to as existential risks: extreme global risks facing humanity. While there is a long list of risks, nuclear war, environmental catastrophe and social dystrophia involving mass surveillance and global totalitarian dictatorship are described as extreme risks.

It is a topic the public would prefer not to think about as they struggle with the challenges of living well in a threatening world.

Kemp expresses his disappointment in the recent US Presidential election in that neither candidate discussed their policy on nuclear weapons. In earlier elections the potential use of nuclear weapons played a prominent role.

A Presidential Democratic political ad in the 1960s featured the danger of an exploding nuclear bomb to human survival implying that their Republican opponent was willing to use nuclear weapons. In response to the fear of a nuclear war, people were buying bomb shelters, packing trailers with supplies to escape to the hinterlands, protesting in the streets or building shelters in their basements. In schools children huddled under their desks during safety drills.

We are living in an age of techno-optimism featuring a rush to implement AI with substantial power and wealth eager to implement it. The introduction of new technologies like AI and automated data centers is promoted. Some proponents acknowledge that risks exist but advocate against regulating AI or designing strategies to limit the risks. If a government agency is given the responsibility to regulate an industry, there is always the risk of regulatory capture if the public fails to continue to support the mission of the agency.

AI is expected to accelerate and expand discovering and developing oil and gas resources which release carbon emissions, contributing to climate change. The increase in the intensity of storms, droughts, heat waves and fires experienced globally is linked to climate change in scientific reports. A few commentators wonder whether extreme storm events are influenced by military efforts to control the weather, remembering President Johnson’s claim

of the importance of controlling weather for national security.

In the global race to control access to diminishing energy and mineral resources, controlling the narrative about what is happening, why, and its implications for the lives of citizens has long been part of the strategies countries in conflict use to garner citizen support.

The effort to control the narrative is inherent in political, military, and governmental bodies. Parties on both sides of a struggle put effort into controlling the narrative, leaving the interested public with the challenge of trying to figure out what is going on. If a gap develops between what the public is being told and the reality of the situation, it can lead to a lack of trust in existing governmental leaders. Similarly, if corporate behavior produces substantial harm to the public, it can lead to a lack of trust in corporate behavior.

If the current push for deregulation welcomed by large global financial interests adversely impacts the lives of ordinary citizens, a reaction is expected. One way to avoid a negative reaction is to have an open discussion of the proposed innovation before a new technology is introduced. Open scientific debates regarding impacts of supersonic transport and the dangers of a hydrogen explosion during the accident at Three Mile Island occurred when the public trust in science was high.

All the products and services provided by our economy are dependent on the consumption of energy. If the availability of energy resources and minerals diminish, efforts are made to control pollution, and society will be forced to adjust. Energy efficiency, recycling, more durable products and solar energy can supply a measure of energy security but changes in how we use energy will increase in importance.

In controlling existential risks, Kemp believes it Is important to identify leverage points to reduce risks and scale up existing efforts to reduce risks. Multiple local organizations support environmental and cleaner energy efforts which need financial and volunteer support for their efforts to scale up their work.

Chicago Auto Show – A great exhibition gets even better

The 117th Chicago Auto Show is in progress through President’s Day, February 17th, at McCormick Place, 2301 South King Drive. As always, there are well over a hundred different models on display!

The Chicago Auto Show has always been a great place to compare various manufacturers’ models of cars all under one roof. This year, more companies than ever are offering test drives just outside. About a dozen are also offering rides in their electric vehicles (EVs) on the indoor track.

What makes this year exciting is that Stellantis and BMW have both come to their senses and returned to the show. And Rivian is there for the first time. They are joined by Tesla, Lucid, Polestar, Vinfast, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen, GM, Hyundai, Ford, Honda, Nissan, and many more. (No one of consequence is missing!)

More and more, the show is focusing on being an “experience” as well as an exhibition. Many of the exhibitors are providing entertainment such as Camp Jeep, Bronco Born Wild, or Overlanding Chicago. Subaru makes an impressive salute to the National Parks and the great outdoors. The show itself is offering an automotive career day on Wednesday and a craft beer tasting on Friday. You can even donate blood at the show!

I was particularly impressed by the smart styling of the Lucid vehicles, both the Air and the Gravity. I had not seen them before. They are made in Arizona.

Stellantis featured an electric Jeep Wagoneer, made in Mexico and priced at about $65-75,000.00. The vehicle does not resemble a traditional Jeep.

History is being made in the auto business, and this year’s auto show allows you to see the dramatic changes that have come to the cars we are driving. Even if you aren’t in the market for a vehicle, it’s worth attending just to see what has happened to this industry:

First, you’ll be offered rides from car companies you’ve never heard of. One these companies is from Vietnam! (You can enter to win one of their electric bikes.) These companies produce EVs only.

Second, cars are more electronic than ever. This has been a huge challenge for legacy car companies to gear up. Many of these electronic systems are needed to support EVs, but even gasoline-powered, Internal Combustion Vehicles (ICVs) use electronic systems instead of the more mechanical assemblies we are used to. Many of the new companies (BVD and

Tesla, for example) come from an electronics-based heritage, and it’s catch-up time for the legacy car makers.

One of the most interesting examples is playing out in China. The Chinese government has offered tremendous incentives for car buyers to select EVs. This has set up a grapple between Volkswagen, the world’s second largest automaker, and, historically, the largest producer and seller of cars in China versus BYD, the Chinese manufacturer who has become the world’s 11th largest car maker.

Instead of relying on subcontractors, Volkswagen is desperately trying to develop and achieve in-house mastery of electronic systems to match its historic know-how in building ICVs. After running through several chief executives and a multi-year effort by Volkswagen, this past fall, the German automaker made a $5.8 billion investment in Rivian, largely to get access to the technology it needs to effectively compete.

Back in Chicago, you can judge for yourself how much progress the various car companies have made on electronic proficiency at this week’s exhibition.

Third, it’s electric. There still are ICVs available to buy (for now), but the world has made its decision. The industry is

going electric, and it isn’t waiting for America to climb on board. Battery systems improve every day and new charging systems are making their debut just as often. No matter who is in office, what tariffs are in place, or incentives are or aren’t being offered, the electric vehicle is becoming the global standard. Even the world’s trains are being electrified! (And really, there is no incentive to resist.)

To summarize, whether Stellantis or anyone else produces a vehicle in Belvidere in the future, these are the products that Belvidere must be able to either match or exceed in performance.

Admission is $17 for adults, $12 for children and seniors. You can buy tickets in advance or at the door. Please note that the Auto Show has gone cashless, and you’ll need to use a payment card. This also applies to souvenirs and refreshments. Only small clutch purses and clear tote bags up to 12 x 12 x 6 are allowed inside. A $2.25 shuttle bus will be operating from both Union and Ogilvie Metra Stations. The weekday Metra fare from McHenry County or Elgin is $6.75 each way, weekend days are $7 for a round trip. Alternatively, plan to pay about $27 to park. Website: chicagoautoshow.com.

The challenging and rewarding blueberry plant

If you consistently eat blueberries every day with your oatmeal or add to a smoothie, you might be thinking if you could grow your own. The answer is yes but with hesitation. It is not as if the blueberry plant cannot grow in Northern Illinois. It can thrive really. The challenge is that it is very picky about having certain growing conditions, something that you may not be able to control.

Unlike other fruits and vegetables you grow, blueberries need a soil pH of 4.8 to 5.2. Within this range, it allows for the blueberry plant’s roots to take up the soil nutrients it needs during the growing

season. The issue is that your growing area, whether growing in the soil, a container, or raised bed, is probably not within this range. Most gardens we see are between 6.0 to 7.5, a range needed for every other fruit and vegetable. So if wanting to growing blueberries, you need to grow them in another area.

Another challenge with blueberries are that it can take some time to lower your soil pH. You probably do not have enough time to do this for spring planting. Sometimes elemental sulfur is recommended which is best applied in the fall. Ammonium sulfate can be used while the plants are growing to lower the soil pH though not always perfect. The rates for

ammonium sulfate are 1 ounce per plant at time of planting, 3 ounces for two year old plants, 8 ounces for four year old plantings, and 12 ounces for eight years or older.

To determine your soil pH, you need to take a soil test. The results will provide you with the current soil pH and some guidance on how to lower your soil pH for where you need to be.

For cultivars, recommended highbush types include ‘Blueray’ and ‘Jersey,’ as well as hybrids (cross between high bush and low bush) ‘Northland’ or ‘Patriot’. Spacing is about 4-6 feet apart. Blueberry plants do need to be pruned. Remove any diseased or broken branches laying

on the ground or branches that are size years or older. When pruning, aim for an open center. You may also remove blossoms in the first 2 years for stronger establishment.

If the growing needs of blueberry has you realizing you do not want to grow them, there is an alternative fruit. Honeyberry has a sweet-tart flavor with blue-purple color like the blueberry but without the soil pH needs. We have grown them at our Winnebago County Extension office for more than 6 years and pleased with the plant. It is very early with a crop of fruit starting Memorial Day weekend. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.
