EDITOR’S LETTER

Being born and raised in Colorado, I found my love for the Rockies in a state that holds so many beautiful places. Through the years, I’ve been lucky enough to travel to many of the other states across the Rockies and have found a certain charm to all of them. Something about the fresh air blowing through the evergreens, or the sand blowing across the Southwest deserts, and the aqua blue lakes in the north, I couldn’t think of a better place to say “I do!” than the Rockies. As I begin to plan my own Rocky Mountain wedding using RMB, I find myself in awe of the talented local vendors in each pocket of the Rocky Mountain region. I hope that within these pages you will find all the inspiration and tips you need to make your day everything you want it to be. We’ve scouted the best of the best in your area to provide you trusted local vendors. Happy planning! visit page 16 to see more of melissa & william’s wedding!

ASPEN 101 Advice for a perfect Aspen trip featuring the weather and favorite spots of the Roaring Fork area. Like all of Colorado, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Planning ahead can make all of the difference for your guests and you.

kelly hornberger photography

S E A S O N A L W E AT H E R Spread across four adjacent mountains and brimming with winter and summer activities, Roaring Fork Valley shines as an ideal wedding location in the Colorado Rockies. From June to September, the weather is warm and sunny, making it the most popular time of the year to tie the knot. If you are looking for that warm weather vibe and plenty of rays, July might be your best bet with average temps in the low 70s. On the other hand, if you are wanting a cozy ambiance to your day, look to January when the city is often blanketed with snow. For a more moody day, check out September. While there is a high chance of afternoon rain, storm clouds instantly add a dramatic feel, and they say rain on your wedding day is good luck, right?

W H AT T O P A C K Guiding guests on what to pack for your wedding can take a lot of the guesswork out of their decision. Feel free to add your wedding attire, whether it be cocktail casual or black-tie optional, to your wedding website. Here is also a great place to add little tidbits too, such as packing a shawl for the cooler months, sunglasses if you are having an outdoor summer ceremony, and reminding guests to drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness.

ACTIVITIES During the winter months, hit the slopes at the area’s four different mountains, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass. The four resorts boast more than 250 trails for beginners to more advanced skiers and snowboarders. If you are new to skiing, Buttermilk is your best bet for beginner runs! After a day on the slopes, warm up with apres ski snacks and sips in Aspen town or Snowmass Village. Nestled in the heart of Aspen and next to the Rio Grande Park lies John Denver Sanctuary. This pristine outdoor area provides the perfect spot for quiet meditation or an afternoon picnic. Walk around the Song Garden, which features many of the iconic singer’s song lyrics etched into large river boulders in a perfect sphere to represent the circle of life with a Colorado Blue Spruce in the center symbolizing John Denver’s true spirit. One of the most iconic landmarks in the area, Maroon Bells showcases the natural beauty of Colorado all year round. Due to the popularity of the area, experts recommend taking a bus to Maroon Bells. Once you are there, take in the breathtaking scenery with two towering peaks reflecting in the clear alpine water. In the winter, Maroon Bells is only accessible by snowmobile or a 12-mile round trip snowshoeing hike.

Melissa + William b u t t e r m i l k m o u n ta i n l o d g e

Melissa and William met at a mutual friend’s party. The pair hit it off and met up for brunch the next day, and the rest is history! After three years of dating, William joined Melissa last minute for her work trip to Switzerland. During their trip, the two took a weekend excursion to Florence, Italy. As the sun set, the two took in the stunning sights from Piazzale Michelangelo, which offers panoramic views of the town. There on a cozy corner bench with live music softly playing in the background, William asked Melissa to marry him! Melissa and Will planned a classic mountain wedding for August 3rd.

MAGICAL KICK-OFF

“Our favorite moment was after the ceremony, coming down Buttermilk Mountain via chairlift to be greeted by all of our friends and family who were gathered for cocktail hour -- their cheering echoed throughout the mountains. It was the most magical way to kick-off the evening.”

Laurel + Brian t-lazy-7 ranch

Laurel and Brian met in a very 21st century kind of way - online! After three years of dating, the pair went for a walk in Wash Park, an area very special to their relationship as Laurel lived there when the couple first met. During their walk, Brian suggested they head over to the Boathouse, which overlooks the lake. As Laurel slowly walked ahead of Brian, she turned around to see him down on one knee! Later Brian confessed he had planned to propose on a hike in a few days, but he decided that night he couldn’t wait any longer. Laurel and Brian planned a garden-inspired wedding for July 20th.

“We also incorporated a traditional handfasting, or knot tying, ceremony. I loved the symbolism, and we’re both Irish! We used a piece of fabric that my mom brought me back from a trip to Nepal, so it feels extra special to have that as a more tangible reminder of our wedding day and vows to one another.”

Gillian + Andre d r a g o n f ly r a n c h

Gillian and Andre attended the University of Colorado before going on separate adventures after graduating, but both returned to Boulder at the perfect time to eventually meet each other! The couple enjoyed the next four years together and shared a love of photobooths and collecting photostrips. Andre knew he wanted to incorporate a photobooth into the proposal, and he just had to wait for the perfect moment to present itself. During a trip to San Diego, Gillian and Andre were enjoying a day at the San Diego Zoo when Gillian spotted a photobooth. As the pair snuggled into the booth, Andre asked Gillian to be his wife! Gillian and Andre planned a ranch wedding for July 13th.

WHY THE ROCKIES

“We met in Boulder, and Colorado always had a special place in our hearts. With both of us being from different places, Chicago and San Diego, a love for Colorado was something we had both been raised with. Coming out to the Rockies for ski vacations are some of both of our best childhood memories.”

Nicole + William engagement

Nicole and William met through mutual friends while attending the University of Texas in Austin. It took a while for William to win over Nicole, but after their first date Nicole knew William was the one! The pair dated for four years, enduring a few rounds of long distance from Dallas to Houston and Midland to New York. Through the experience, Nicole and William truly learned that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

real beginnings

THE PROPOSAL

Being a perpetual planner, Nicole never thought William’s proposal would come as a complete surprise. The pair jetted off to Belize for a vacation with just the two of them. One day of the trip, they went out fishing in the ocean for yellowtail and mahi mahi for dinner. After returning to land, William suggested they get ready quickly to take in the sunset on the pier. As they walked down the pier and before Nicole even knew what was going on, William dropped to one knee and asked Nicole to marry him! She was caught so off guard that her initial response was, “Is this a joke?” before realizing William was serious, crying tears of joy and saying, “Yes!” The two finished out their trip as an engaged couple in a bungalow over the water with fresh fish prepared from their earlier catch!

Q & A with

Tara Marolda By: Erin Mitschele

What is your favorite part of the job? I have a passion for visual storytelling, I try and go beyond traditional poses and instead, depict true personality and real moments. On a wedding day, my favorite part is capturing emotion between loved ones with an editorial touch.

What is your favorite tool of the trade? I work with medium format and digital. During a wedding day, I will begin with my Contax 645, and different rolls of film from color to black and white. As the night progresses and the reception takes over, I will switch to my digital camera, a Canon 5d Mark IV and prime lenses.

Where do you come up with your ideas? I let the ideas come to me. When I am photographing, whether it is an engagement session or a wedding, I first and foremost, always follow the natural light. When I have found the best light in a room or outdoors, I will center my subjects around where I feel the light is perfect. With subtle direction, I ask my subjects to engage with their partner, and I will capture a pure and beautiful moment that was completely natural and most importantly, authentic.

What is one thing you wish you could educate your clients on? Many times clients will think that they do not need a wedding planner, and that it is possible to plan a wedding (which is most often a destination wedding in Aspen/Vail area) on their own. This becomes incredibly complicated and difficult to do for a bride and a groom, who should focus on enjoying their most special day and give all of the nitty gritty details over to a wedding planner who can handle it all.

Who gives you the best advice? Whether its through social media, or meeting fine art photographers who come to Aspen, my fellow photographers always give amazing tips and advice. It can be technical advice, or tips on how to deal with tricky clients, and I value every piece of advice I hear from photographers.

Worst wedding SNAFU? How did you problem solve? Recently I was shooting a winter wedding, and we transferred by bus from the hotel to the chapel. I had my camera in my hand and my bags in my other hand. As I was getting off the bus, the driver grabbed my arm to help me get off the steep bus step since my hands were full. He grabbed my elbow and my camera went flying. It crashed in the snow, and my lens was shattered. Thankfully, I always travel with extra cameras! My advice to fellow wedding photographers is always keep your camera strapped to you, and ALWAYS bring a backup camera.

Getting a manicure will ensure your nails and fingers are looking their absolute best as you show off your new engagement ring.

caporal captures photo + film

Having a professional photographer on hand to capture the moment you say “yes” gives you a keepsake to cherish for a lifetime.

This is a great time to show off your partner as well as your new ring. Cheers, you have officially been upgraded to fiancé.

While the bling is the number one focus of a #ringselfie, the background view is also important. Try a few different angles to get the ultimate shine from your bling.

To cast those stunning prisms all around, you need bright direct light. Move your fingers back and forth to create these dashing rainbows.

Add a filter from VSCO or Instagram to brighten any shadows and keep the focus on your ring. Our favs are Lightroom, KiraKira+ and Instasize!
