Those first days when the summer sun gives into the cool fall breeze are the best. Trees transform into brilliant shades of amber and yellow that glow in the sun. College football takes over Saturday entertainment (Go Gators!) and pumpkin spice lattes return at last! Along with all the things we love about fall, the change of season also brings new inspiration and beauty to weddings in Colorado. For this issue of Rocky Mountain Bride, we wanted to stay true to the organic and natural romance of the Rockies. Each real wedding captures both the landscape of Colorado, and also the special, personalized touches each couple incorporated to showcase their love, and at the end of the day, those are the things that really matter in building a beautiful marriage. Along with our love stories, we created some beautiful inspiration that was inspired by the time of year and those natural colors. For The RMB Gown Guide, we wanted to highlight the changing aspens and design the dresses around wearable floral accents that will be next summer’s hot trend. In Durango, inspiration was found in literature, poems and quotes about the mountains. All brought together to create a tablescape with unreal views and a scroll runner hand-written with beautiful words. With so many natural style cues, we promise that you will find a look that will inspire your fall and winter wedding in the Rockies! We at RMB are so honored and excited to help be a part of your Rocky Mountain “I Do!” Happy Planning!

Farm Flowers

Newly located just outside of Aspen, Ali Fortunato Botanics + Styling has been crafting floral for over 3 years. She has set up shop in the Creative Spaces at Cedar Ridge Ranch, working alongside some of the area’s local talent in music, art and design - a perfect space to create stunning blooms for weddings. Ali’s natural and romantic designs blend seamlessly with her love of local floral and the mountains. With her new studio on the ranch, she was inspired to style one of the residents with an organic foraged lilac wreath and share the how-to so you can create your own!

Lilac Wreath

The abundance of natural wildflowers, greenery and plants are everywhere in Colorado. Forage a field to create your floral whim, like a lilac wreath for the baby calf at Cedar Ridge Ranch. 1. Explore Whether your backyard is Aspen or Denver, stroll around to find beautiful plants and flowers that inspire you. The rich Lilac bush on the ranch was Ali’s muse for her wreath.

2. Trim Once you’ve gathered, clip into manageable pieces that will allow you to shape them into the wreath

3. Shape Use floral wire to connect the pieces and blend them together. The leaves of the Lilacs will hide the wire!

4. Tie Use ribbon to add the final touch to the wreath: Silk and Willow was used to create Ali’s wreath and accent the soft textures of the shape and flowers.

5. Model We couldn’t think of a better model for alilac wreath than our sweet little calf. Let your little love strut their stuff in style with their own beautiful floral wreath! Heather & Dan steamboat springs

andy barnhart photography

After a brief meeting in the University of Colorado dorms, Heather and Dan’s love story started on the night of Heather’s birthday years later. A friend asked to bring Dan along and the two ended up dancing the night away. After their first dance both knew they were meant to be! Dan proposed to Heather during a spring hike by their home in Vail. Despite the snow, he managed to set up a picnic with champagne and have Heather’s brother photograph the moment! The two planned a mountain inspired wedding on June 18th.

The Theme: Heather and Dan wanted a casual, yet

elegant wedding that was both comfortable and inviting for all guests. They went with a rustic mountain theme to achieve the look, and incorporated shades of greens, creams, navy and blush for a natural feel.

The Dress: “I never felt like I would find that ‘perfect dress’ that everyone kept talking about. I really wasn’t finding a dress that I felt fit my personality and my husbands. Living in California I always had more of the laid back ‘bride’ feeling and ‘Bohemian,’ but situated in the mountains, look. I constantly researched blogs and websites and finally found a designer that I loved. I went to the website, Rue de Seine, and found the dress that I thought could be ‘the one.’ I contacted the designer immediately trying to figure out how I could try it on and they said there first shipment of the collection was going to be sent to a & be that month. I had already been working with a & bé, but they didn’t have the dress at the time. I made an appointment for when the dress would arrive. Once I tried it on, I didn’t need to look any further.”

The Flowers: Heather wanted an organic look to her

florals. Peonies, her favorite flower, was incorporated into the design along with aspen leaves - she loved how freeflowing and natural they were!

Heather and Dan had two favorite details! First was the location, Marabou was a magical place to them. It’s right on the Elk River and they said it can’t get much more beautiful than that. The second detail they loved was their sparkler exit! Dan’s parents surprised the newlyweds with a ride to the hotel in a vintage Rolls Royce with a very nice bottle of champagne. Heather tells us, they were so surprised and grateful to have a quiet moment as husband and wife.

The Favorite Detail:

The Food: The couple raved about the food! Rex’s

American Grill & Bar did the catering for Dan’s brother’s wedding and they were so impressed, they booked them too! During cocktail hour, guests enjoyed bruschetta, caprese, bison ball bites and stuffed mushrooms. For dinner, they served it family style and offered homemade flatbread, strawberry fields salad, chicken marsala and BBQ pork tenderloin.

The Sweets: A family friend made the Desserts. Her

attention to detail and baking talent made it an obvious choice. She baked up tulip cups, truffle pops, key lime tartlets, a variety of cupcakes and a special white cake with raspberry filling wrapped in European meringue style butter cream frosting for the newlyweds.

Mr. and Mrs. Moment: “We did a first look prior to the

ceremony and it was very special. Seeing each other for the first time, in a private setting, was very personal, emotional, and a beautiful moment.”

Advice for RMB Brides: “Hire a day-of wedding coordinator!! I planned every detail and laid out what I had envisioned for my vendors, but when it comes to the day, you need to let everything go. If something didn’t go to plan, I wasn’t focused on it. Do your best to relax and be present in the moment. The whole day goes so fast! The more mentally present you are, the more great memories you’ll have! Our wedding coordinator, Alex, was wonderful to work with from start to finish. She came to the table with great ideas, communicated easily, and had strong relationships with local vendors. Upon hiring her she immediately got in touch with our vendors and started making plans. During the planning process, she did a great job of working with our vision and offering helpful tips, without stepping on our toes. On the day of the wedding she executed the vision and the plans flawlessly; making sure everyone was where they should be at the right time and keeping the events flowing smoothly without interruption.” Three Words: Sunny, Relaxed, Dance Party!

Quiara & Matthew ridgeway

mattie krall photography

Quiara and Matthew met at CU their junior year. A friend invited her to a get together, where she met Matt and fell in love with his “big, brown puppy dog eyes. There was an instant connection, and the two became friends with an electric attraction to each other.Years went by and Quiara returned to Colorado after some time away. After five years of friendship, Quiara and Matt moved in together, as friends, with mutual friends. Her and Matthew became very close, and after a few weeks started dating - finally! Quiara always wanted to stay in a yurt at Joyful Journey Hot Springs near the Great Sand Dunes. So when Matt booked the trip, she had a hunch it was that moment! They heard a big storm may be headed to Wolf Creek Ski Area, so the two grabbed their split boards and skinned up Wolf Creek. After climbing to the top Quiara was exhausted from the hike. Exhausted, Quiara flopped into the snow. It was then that she heard their inside joke song. She looked up, and Matthew was on one knee. The two decided to celebrate their love with a southwest wedding on June 25th full of personal details and fiesta fun!

38 rockymountainbride.com

Rocky Mountain Bride Colorado

real wedding The Theme: Quiara and Matthew love Southwestern

Colorado, and enjoy it’s mountains, so they stuck with the Southwest vibe for their wedding theme! Chipeta Solar Springs Resort provided that aesthetic and allowed them the space to do everything outside.

The Dress: “I found my dress at a&bé bridal in Denver with

my mom and two good girl friends. I have never been super girly and never really envisioned myself in a traditional wedding dress, so going into a bridal shop was a little intimidating at first. All that anxiety went away when I saw Rue De Seine’s line- I really felt like they were the kind of dresses I could feel like myself in. I tried every single one of the Nomadic Love Collection dresses on! My girl friends were actually the ones that spotted the Eve dress, which I ultimately picked. When I put it on, I immediately felt comfortable and not overdone, but still very soft and feminine. I fell in love with the romantic embroidery details and the low back.”

The Flowers: “I ADORE flowers, so my bouquet was very

important to me! I think flowers are such a beautiful representation of nature’s variance in color and shape, and even smell- they evoke so many senses! I really wanted to include king proteas, they remind me of flamingo feathers and have such a commanding shape. I asked for variegated greenery, because I really enjoy the contrast of colors that look like they are splashed on the leaves. Peonies are my favorite flower, so that was a must as well! Outside of that, I mostly discussed having a variety of colors with no specific theme and keeping the bouquet loose and organic in shape.”

The Favorite Detail: Quiara’s favorite detail of the day was

their ceremony. Her cousin and lifelong mentor, Marlena, married the two. Quiara tells us that writing is among one of her talents, and she incorporated the First Nation’s “Marriage Blessing” as well as Walt Whitman’s “Song Of The Open Road” into the ceremony speech. Quiara felt like the words were perfect for the intimate setting of the mountain meadow they were married in. Then, to get to hear Matt read her the heartfelt vows he wrote, it was so emotional and personal to who they were as a couple.

The Food: Quiara’s mom is well known by her friends for her

delicious cooking. So she made a whole bunch of appetizers and also made the newlyweds a traditional Slovenian bread heart! The main dinner was crafted by Chipeta Solar Spring Resort’s restaurant. Both Quiara and Matthew love Mexican food, so they had a buffet fiesta with all their favorites including fresh guacamole, steak, chicken, shrimp tacos as well as a delicious roasted tomato and black bean soup yum!

The Sweets: “Matt’s Mom and Aunt are amazing bakers, so we

asked if they would be up for making us a sweet heart cake, for just the two of us. They made the most scrumptious vanilla cake with hints of almond and a nice light home made frosting! It was so much better than paying tons of money for something that didn’t come from the heart! Rocky Mountain Bride Colorado

Katie & Brett vail

kara pearson photography

Katie and Brett met at the University of Denver. They both frequented a local bar called The Border where one night Katie walked in and Brett was smitten! He told himself that by the end of the night he would talk to her, but as he was about to, Katie was nowhere to be found. Disappointed, he left the bar, and as fate would have it, struck up a conversation with Katie’s best friend! Upon hearing Brett’s Canadian accent, she excitedly told Brett that she had a friend that talked just like him! And just like that, Brett met Katie! From the moment they met, they had an instant connection. Brett continued his hockey career, while Katie was accepted to dental school in Nebraska.Yet the two remained close and made long distance work, even thought at times there was 14 time zones between them! After seven years of dating, Katie was in Las Vegas for a dental conference when Brett surprised her by flying in to see her, took her to a beautiful Parisan restaurant and asked to her marry him! The two planned their Vail destination wedding for the gorgeous July 11th, and celebrated in the Rockies with friends and family!

The Theme: For their wedding, Katie and Brett wanted a modern mountain design. They had a color palette of gold, blush, cream and white to create the perfect look!

The Dress: Katie purchased her stunning Nicole Miller “Leigh” gown in Chicago. She loved the detail and shape.

The Flowers: Katie and Brett left the floral

design to Bloom Flower Shop, and the couple love how it all turned out - perfect for their mountain modern soirée!

“My favorite wedding detail was the gorgeous arch of flowers created by the florist. The arch framed Brett and I perfectly against the beautiful mountain backdrop. Giving our guests the experience of riding to the wedding site in a gondola was fun for us too.”

The Favorite Detail:

Mr. and Mrs. Moment: “Our favorite moment was at the end of the evening when we were riding down the gondola. Everything was dark and so peaceful. As we descended on Vail, which was so beautifully lit up, we reflected on how happy we were to be together and what a success the day was. I will never forget how I felt in that moment.”

The Food: Katie and Brett loved their wedding menu prepared by the team at The 10th Restaurant! They passed hors d’oeuvres of citrus glazed ahi tuna, burrata with local tomato bruschetta with sun dried tomato pistou, crab cakes with scallion aioli and caviar, and beef and pork meatball skewers with bordelaise for cocktail hour. Dinner began with a first course of an organic green salad with port wine poached pears, candied pecans, blue cheese and a champagne blueberry vinaigrette. For the main course, guests had their choice of wild caught salmon, black angus beef tenderloin, or vegetable napoleon.

Katie loves sweets so the couple had a dessert bar so guests could enjoy a little bite of everything! Advice for RMB Brides: “I would advise all brides to try and stay calm and to keep things in perspective. It’s very easy to get wrapped up in the wedding planning process and lose sight of what’s really important. In the end, the party is wonderful, but it’s getting to marry your best friend that’s the best part of all. Also, having a husband who is interested in the planning process is very helpful. I never felt like I was doing it alone.” Three Words: Romantic, Party, Perfect

Caroline & Marshall colorado springs

green blossom photography

Caroline and Marshall met while attending Davidson College in North Carolina. The two bonded over their love for the outdoors, an appreciation of bluegrass, nerdy curiosities and the itch to travel the world. They both were pretty independent and spent two years dating long distance after college while Marshall was in the UK and Caroline was in Latin America. The two finally ended up in the same city together, and they moved from D.C to San Francisco. Over the three years together in San Francisco their love grew even stronger, and they knew it was a forever relationship. Marshall proposed while they were on a hike, overlooking the cliffs at Salt Point State Park, just north of Sea Ranch on the Sonoma Coast. Caroline said “yes, and the two started planning a woodsy, Colorado wedding to celebrate their love with the people that meant the most to them! On a crisp and clear October 10th, they became husband and wife - the best adventure the two had taken!

The Theme: Caroline and Marshall’s main wedding goal was

to bring the people they hold most dear together in one place and to express their gratitude for raising and supporting them! They designed a relaxed, woodsy fall wedding with pops of burgundy, navy, ivory and natural greens.

The Dress: Caroline chose the stunning “Coretta” gown

by Amy Kuschel. She found the lace A-line dress off the rack in San Francisco!

The Flowers: Caroline and Marshall chose what Cheri

from Southern Charm recommended for their natural and woodsy wedding feel. Caroline loved her designs and called her a “floral creative genuis!”

The Favorite Detail: “The church. It was really important to us to have a reverent ceremony. We had our rector from our church in San Francisco, Claire Ranna, officiating, and we served communion to all the guests. It was powerful. The church and grounds were aesthetically right on point. It was beautiful inside—Marshall was in love with it because it reminded him of an English country house—but with views of the Rockies. And even though we weren’t parishioners, everyone there was incredibly welcoming. My father’s family grew up in the neighborhood, and we’ve all attended Christmas Eve services, weddings, etc. in that lovely chapel.” The First Dance: The new Mr. and Mrs. danced to “As Time Goes By”—the Dooley Wilson version, from Casablanca. When Marshall and Caroline were living in different countries, and would visit each other every four or five months, they would always watch the movie for some reason and just loved the song every time it was sang in the film.

Mr. and Mrs. Moment: Caroline shared two moments

with us! One was the couple serving communion together. They are both Episcopalian, and being able to share a very meaningful rite with people they love was very special. The second was a moment they took toward the end of the cocktail hour, just before dinner, to escape a little ways away from the party and watch everything that was happening. Caroline tells us that, ‘It was great to pause in the middle of all the excitement. It was an incredibly moving moment to see all of these folks from different points in our lives coming together and getting to know one another, discovering they had a lot more in common than just knowing us.”

The Food: In honor of Marshall’s Southern roots, they

served Georgia pulled pork BBQ, mac and cheese, cole slaw, cornbread and other Southern fixin’s. Caroline and Marshall just loved the menu Tony Rosacci’s Fine Catering created!

The Sweets: In keeping with their Southern soirée, the couple served five types of pies for guests to enjoy that included apple, blackberry, pecan, peach, and chocolate.

Advice for RMB Brides: “First, read A Practical Wed-

ding, by Meg Keene. It saved us from so much of the anxiety and insanity we were expecting with planning this thing. I’d also suggest, as she does, sitting down with your partner and picking out three adjectives that you want to describe your wedding. They should be consistent with your approach to your marriage—that’s what all this is for, anyway, right? When we felt ourselves getting sucked into the wedding vortex, we kept going back to those three adjectives. It helped us, possibly more than anything else, have the wedding we wanted.”

Intimate Wedding + Elopement Photographer

I believe there is nothing more romantic than soft unexpected kisses. I love bright color palettes, elegant details, and couples who want to spend their day with their closest of family and friends. With passport in hand, I am ready to go wherever your love takes you.

“There is one thing that photography must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough-there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph” -Rober t Frank

My goal is to create timeless wedding films that aloow you to relive your wedding day at any time. Each couple is unique and every wedding has a great story behind it. I document all the big moments and small details to tell the story of your love. When you get married in the Rockies, the scenery becomes part of your wedding. I love to incorporate mountain town character and the beautiful vistas in each film. I know this is the most important day of your life and I see it as a great privilege to document your wedding day.
