behind the scenes

e d i t o r’s l et t er

Hello darling!

laura murray photography

rene tate photography

I remember the first time I crossed the Wyoming border. It was February, snowy and cold. As we drove past Laramie to Rock Springs, Pinedale and onward to Jackson, I will totally admit that the entire trip I was looking ahead waiting for the Tetons to make their appearance. Granted, I grew up in Florida where the biggest “mountains” I saw were on the drive from Orlando to Gainesville. There was a dip in the road, maybe 10 feet, but it felt pretty big at the time - Ha! Now, having spent a lot of time exploring the land and connecting with it’s people, I have learned to not look ahead, but all around. Wyoming is for lovers. Plain and simple. It is a state that holds so much raw beauty in plain sight. From left to right, you will fall in love with the high desert plains of the Rockies and it’s open spaces. There is a secret escape waiting to be found around each corner. Something unexpected, yet perfect. For this magazine, it was our goal to unearth all of the hidden wonders of Wyoming. Places that require deeper digging to reveal just how special they are. The love stories that take place here are rooted so deeply that you can’t help but be moved. We wanted to create inspiration that not only challenged the expectations, but that rose to what promising forever in Wyoming should feel like. RMB’s Editor, Chelsea, is a proud Wyoming native. She completely foraged a fresh and authentic path for this state with every stunning real wedding and styled shoot she planned! Her love for the square state along with our amazing Sales Manager and Jackson local, Lizzy, made this magazine spectacular! We are beyond excited for you to discover and fall in love with Wyoming!

The Cover Story jessica janae photography

h o l ly & m at t h e w married september 17th

On September 17th, Matthew and Holly were married at Holly’s parent’s home at the base of Casper Mountain. It’s a special place to the bride not only because she was raised in the town, but it’s where Matthew and Holly first met. Matt even proposed on her parent’s land! The couple knew right away it was where they were suppose to become husband and wife. Holly wanted the wedding to be simple and classic. The residence itself is inspired by a french country design so she kept that chic, french rustic theme consistent throughout. Because the mountains and surrounding scenery acted as the backdrop, the amount of decor was minimal. The best decor that the two had were their dogs, Beans and Nancy. It was very important to Holly and Matthew that they were a part of this day. The two Australian Shepherds were a hit and big ceremony entertainment. They wanted it to be natural so they did not have them on leashes. They were free to do whatever! Typically, they follow Holly everywhere she goes and are always at her feet. Her hope was that they would do exactly that for the ceremony. And they did! At first, it was precious. They laid down at Holly’s feet for the ceremony. It was so perfect it almost looked staged! However, by the middle of the ceremony they clearly wanted to play, because Beans started rolling around in the bride’s veil on his back. Everyone was dying laughing, and Holly and Matthew do not regret a dang thang. For as much of a complete blur that day was, Beans and Nancy stealing the show at the ceremony is a moment the bride and groom will never forget.

Ali + Brandon

happy confetti photography

ja c k s o n h o l e

It was St. Patrick’s Day 2009 in Downtown Denver when Ali and Brandon first met. The two were out with mutual friends to celebrate and sparks flew between them immediately! However, Brandon waited two weeks to ask Ali on a date (he claims he already knew they were soul mates), which coincidentally fell on the same night as a horrible spring blizzard! Luckily the couple snuck into one of the only restaurants that had decided to stay open during the storm. As the town became still and the streets filled with snow, Ali and Brandon got to know one another over pizza and beer. The rest was history! Years later they took a road trip up to Montana for a joint family vacation, and Brandon rode in the Butte 100 mountain bike race. With Brandon placing 9th overall, the group decided to celebrate by spending the rest of the trip relaxing at Flathead Lake where Ali spent several family trips growing up. One evening the family was finishing up a lakeside BBQ when Brandon lured Ali out to the dock to capture a picture together during sunset. In front of their families, he smoothly got down on one knee, grabbed Ali’s hand and popped the question. Surprised, teary-eyed, and perfect in every way - she of course said, “yes!” Ali and Brandon became one on August 6th at Snake River Sporting Club surrounded by family and friends!

the star of the show Eight years prior to their engagement Ali and Brandon took their first road trip to Yellowstone National Park and Jackson, Wyoming. When the two were thinking of where to get married, the historic Wyoming town seemed like the perfect destination. Not only for sentimental reasons, but Jackson boasts unbeatable adventure and scenery! The snow capped Tetons and the winding Snake River were an idyllic setting for their special day. Therefore, when it came to planning, the couple let the surrounding landscape act as the star. Besides Ali and Brandon knew the majority of their guests had never visited before so they wanted to ensure they had a front row seat to the same amazingness they discovered on their first road trip together!

the little white dress “For my little white dress, I set out to find something timeless and feminine. A gown that was flattering but not overly sexy. My mom was the one who envisioned me in a two-piece. Honestly when she picked it off the rack I had no interest, but as soon as I put it on I knew it was the one! The Theia gown was fun, easy to move around in and it kept me cool from the summer heat. I adored the feminine lace detail around the neck. I even added buttons down the back of my skirt for more detail and a simple bustle. It was such a fun dress, and I am so happy it was mine!

no words needed “For my floral, I wanted lots of greenery and big blossoms that felt wild and organic. My only specific flower request was that my bouquet and my Dad’s boutonniere included Gardenias. Gardenias have always reminded us of our grandma. Better yet, I learned later that she and my aunt also carried Gardenias in their wedding bouquets. Since my grandma had passed away years ago, I thought this would be the perfect way to make her an important part of the day! I kept this floral detail a surprise for my dad. It was a special moment for us to share without any words needed!”

a backyard feel Jackson Hole DJ and Production Co. strung bistro lights across the dance floor. They gave the evening such a welcoming and warm backyard feel. Guests always wanted to be under them.

advice for rocky mountain brides “Try not to sweat the small stuff and be as present as possible on your big day! I have such a vivid memory that happened right after we finished taking family pictures and we were headed over to join the reception. In that in-between moment the sky turned dark and ominous, and it started to sprinkle rain. I looked out at the outdoor reception and how beautiful our open-aired dance floor looked from a distance. I thought to myself, ‘Soon it is going to start pouring and everything is going to be soggy and wet, but I couldn’t be happier.’ Even what I thought would have been the worst thing to happen that day couldn’t have possibly taken away from how happy I felt! Nothing could have changed how incredible it felt to be married to the love of my life and surrounded by our loved ones. After I had this revelation, the clouds opened up and the sun came back out. Just like that, it was a perfect summer night again. There is nothing more powerful than positive, happy energy. It is contagious, and it will depict your weekend!”

Kaylyn + Ethan

unveiled radiance photography

g r a n d t e t o n nat i o na l p a r k

Kaylyn and Ethan met in 2012 through a mutual friend. Ethan was immediately drawn to Kaylyn and reached out a couple of months later directly. Though Kaylyn wasn’t looking for a relationship at that time, she knew there was something special about Ethan. The two became close friends. Through some serious life changes for Kaylyn, Ethan was a constant, right by her side good or bad. Ethan loved Kaylyn with so much compassion and love that he didn’t date anyone else while he waited for her to be ready. Two years later, Kaylyn moved from Louisiana to Texas. Still Ethan was there for her, promising to marry her if she came home. A couple of months later, the two finally made it official! Ethan helped Kaylyn move back to Louisiana! In July of the following year, Ethan began completely remodeling the house he grew up in for the two to one day make their own. On Thanksgiving Day the same year, he proposed to Kaylyn in the deconstructed space of their now bedroom in the home that the two share. The couple share a passion for National Parks, so they couldn’t think of a more breathtaking location to elope to than Grand Teton National Park on a June summer day.

you are my greatest adventure Since Kaylyn and Ethan love to explore and visit National Parks, they made that sense of adventure the main theme for their elopement. In such a breathtaking place as Jenny Lake, creating a naturally elegant look and feel is effortless! Kaylyn drew inspiration from a color palette of creams, blush and touches of navy to accent the landscape.

love letters “It’s so hard to share just one detail from this day. The entire day was so unique and planned with every bit of heart we could put into it. However, one of my favorite details would have to be what I had done for Ethan prior to the big day. Friends and family are so important to Ethan. I was the first to suggest an elopement, and he knew how important it was for me to do this. He agreed to let this happen, because he is the definition of a giver with a servant’s heart. Two months before our wedding I got in touch with five of his closest friends and ten of his family members and asked them to write Ethan a letter to open on our wedding day. I wanted him to have them and their hearts with us even if they couldn’t physically be there. I gave Ethan the letters the morning of our wedding before I left for the day. It meant so much to him to have those letters. They are something we have saved and hold so dear.”

advice to rocky mountain couples “The most important advice I could give to other Rocky Mountain couples is to remember that this day is yours. Make every detail of your day about you and what you two enjoy. It isn’t about what is trending or what will make others happy. This is about you, your marriage and what makes you the happiest. The mountains are one of the most special places in the world to Ethan and I. Make your wedding, and the destination you choose to share it, a place that you can escape to, to remember the love you share in this very moment.”

yellowstone! “We mostly spent our time in the Jackson Hole, WY area. One morning we drove into Idaho to watch the sun rise from a hot air balloon. It was absolutely beautiful. While in Jackson Hole, we rode horses, went white water rafting, explored every inch of Grand Teton National Park and shopped in the downtown square. One of the main reasons we chose Wyoming was for Yellowstone National Park. We spent two days exploring inside of the park. It was the most phenomenal experience!”

However, Megan had secretly been checking Kyle out at work long before then! That night, their relationship sparked immediately. The couple fell more in love as time went on. A few years passed and they decided to take a vacation together to Costa Rica. On their last night, Kyle planned a romantic dinner at a local restaurant, La Luna. Megan and Kyle soaked in the moment by walking seaside to the restaurant. They shared a bottle of fine wine as they watched the sun set over the crashing blue waves. After dinner, they followed their same footsteps back. The beach was quiet and peaceful. The two held hands and walked slowly as the night stars lit the way. Just then, Kyle got down on one knee and asked Megan to be his wife. Of course, she said,“Yes!”They planned an intimate, fall wedding with their pup on September 24th in Lander, Wyoming.

when it rains “The week before our wedding, afternoon storms rolled through Lander quickly and often. However, knowing the unpredictable Wyoming weather, we stayed optimistic. Sure enough, the morning of, we woke up to rain clouds and a bitter breeze! I panicked, because we didn’t have a backup plan! After a few minutes of near tears and pep talks, Kyle and I decided to just do it! As we got ready, the harsh weather did not lighten up. In fact, it got worse! Luckily, about forty five minutes before the ceremony, the clouds parted. It was fate! We are so fortunate the sun decided to make an appearance, it made for a perfect September evening! Our friends and family got to experience the true beauty of Lander, our home, and we couldn’t have asked for a better night!”

seasons in bloom Megan’s Aunt Lisa, located in Jackson, designed the floral for the couple’s wedding. She is a very special artist as she is a kindergarten teacher by day and a florist by night! Lisa designed texture rich arrangements full of soft, pink blooms and lots of greenery. Megan loved that she included a romantic touch of burgundy into her bouquet to compliment the fall season! The newlyweds were so thrilled to showcase her talents on their special day. It was most definitely one of their most memorable details!

Anna + Travis

ashleigh brown photography

casper

Anna and Travis met in high school. Travis was a year ahead of Anna, and she sat behind him in calculus! They quickly became friends and spent quite a bit of time together. After a few months of friendship, the two quickly realized that they wanted to be more than friends. They started dating towards the end of Travis’ last year in high school, and stayed that way ever since. They both initially attended the University of Wyoming, until Anna transferred to Arizona to finish her schooling. Travis stayed and they continued long distance. After six years together, Travis popped the question on his family’s land on Casper Mountain. In June of 2015, Travis and Anna went up there on a drive and, with the help of their puppy, Myah, he asked Anna to marry him! Of course, she said, “YES!” The two planned their perfect Wyoming wedding for July 9th and danced the night away with all of their guests!

a hometown celebration Growing up in Casper, Anna and Travis wanted their wedding to take place at home where they fell in love. Their day was elegant and rustic. Better yet, their celebration was filled with over 200 of their closest friends and family! Anna used a color palette of neutrals, grays and blush to create her dream day!

buttons and lace

Anna wore a stunning satin sheath gown on her wedding day. She loves the beading and lace along the front straps and the embellished beaded waist. The lace detail on the back along with satin buttons down the dress finished off her perfect little white dress!

rustic and always romantic For the ceremony, Anna’s mother decorated a rusted-iron trellis topped with elk antler sheds, blooms and greenery. It was gorgeous! Between the sun-kissed mountain backdrop and the romantic, rustic decor, the trellis easily became a favorite detail amongst guests and the couple.

Liz + Matt

liz osban photography

centennial

Liz met Matt almost nine years ago in college. Both attended the University of Wyoming. The two were student leaders in Student Government, Liz a college senatorand Matt was trying to get confirmed to the judicial council. He distinctly remembers that Liz didn’t vote for him. Though she insisted that she was just looking out for the interest of the student body! Apparently for Matt, it was love at first sight. The two met again at Liz’s sorority, Chi Omega, when Matt became a hasher at the house. His tasks as a hasher included doing dishes in return for meals with the perk of hanging around the lovely ladies. Once Matt got his lady, Liz, he quit being a hasher‌ mission accomplished! Their relationship grew with every year through moving, career changes, long distance graduate school and finally with a proposal! Today these Wyomingites live is Houston,Texas and work in the oil and gas industry. Who knew these two kids, who grew up only 45 minutes apart, would end up together, but when it came time for their wedding they knew they had to return home.Their hometown Wyoming mountain wedding was surrounded with love and held on a beautiful September afternoon.

wyoming true!

Liz and Matt wanted to create a special day of memories for their loved ones to share with them and have the day flow naturally. Their love story grew in the mountains, exploring and spending time together, so it was only fitting that the two would get engaged and be married in the mountains they love! It was important for the couple to host a true Wyoming wedding in the fall with touches of shimmer and elegance. Liz and Matt wanted every part of the wedding to be a reflection of what they love as a couple: fall colors, favorite foods, style and lots of Wyoming flair! With an autumn-inspired color palette of champagne, gold and burgundy, the couple created their dream wedding day look by being resourceful and creative!

the one When Liz started thinking about her dress, she knew exactly what she wanted. She envisioned something graceful and classic, but extremely unique that complemented the seasonal colors. Liz arranged a special trip for her parents to come out to Houston to join her for trying on dresses! She made an appointment at BHLDN, because she loved their style and bridal silhouettes. While waiting for her appointment, she was walking around the front of the store where the reception dresses were and found the most gorgeous dress. The long sleeved gown was completely beaded in gold, copper and blush with a vintage looking straight skirt. During her appointment, she tried on a couple of traditional gowns, but none caught her fancy like the one dress she found. A few days passed and she couldn’t stop thinking about it. So she called the store, set up an appointment to try it on and immediately fell in love! Best part, it fit perfectly! She even added a flowy, tulle skirt to wear over the dress for the ceremony. Liz ended up with two wedding day looks!

something borrowed “One of our favorite wedding details was all of the handmade and sweet borrowed items that we incorporated. The prismatic champagne coups we used during our portrait shoot and for toasts at our reception belong to my parents. They were the glasses they used at their wedding 38 years ago. We were so honored to use them! For my something borrowed, something old and something blue, I wore a sweet little pin with a blue sapphire that belonged to my great grandmother. We used a brass and lace tray from another great grandmother to hold the boutonnieres. Our confetti had dried lavender in it from Matt’s mom’s garden. The family details made us thankful for all generations of our family and the legacy they have left. We borrowed some of the decorations from friends and our officiant’s wife (they are both best friends of mine) made us a hand quilted tapestry with our last name. I also have an amazing friend, Erica, who did all of the calligraphy for our hand written items. It was one of my favorite details! Since I did all of the wedding planning, getting everyone involved made the day so smooth but also helped connect us all.”

tailgating-good time!

Liz and Matt love football and tailgates, so they wanted their wedding reception to feel like a BBQ, Wyoming style! Their caterer from Carpenter, WY brought his smoker on a trailer up the mountain. He served chopped braised beef brisket, smoked pulled pork and grilled chicken. Sides of potato salad, smoky ranch beans and coleslaw were also available. Drinks were served in a horse trough with ice on the porch so guests could enjoy the mountain views. The newlyweds also served Wyoming Toad IPA from Coal Creek Tap House in Laramie as well as some of their favorite local Texas craft beer!

advice to rocky mountain couples 1. Take the time to enjoy being engaged and celebrate! Don’t hurry into wedding planning mode and miss out on the sweetness of being engaged. Remember you are not just planning a wedding event, but a life together. 2. Don’t be afraid to do something a little different than people expect. If you stay focused on what is important to you both then everything will be as it should! We decided to do a morning wedding, afternoon reception and then an after party in town later in the evening. Essentially we wanted to just spend the whole day with the people we love! 3. Find the best photographer you can- don’t ask just anyone. What is left from your day is your photos (and if they will climb mountains, even better)!

Katie + Thomas teton village

Katie and Thomas first crossed paths in downtown Tallahassee, Florida. Katie was working at an iconic restaurant called Po’Boys, and Thomas was working for a wine and spirits distributor and serviced the account. While it may not have been love at first sight, the attraction was definitely there. One night, after enjoying a few cocktails with friends,Thomas asked Katie to dance in the parking lot of one of their favorite local spots. It was there that they shared their first kiss. Soon after the two were inseparable. It didn’t take Thomas much time to realize that Katie was one of the sweetest, beautiful, most agreeable people he had ever met. Katie knew that Thomas was charming, funny and adventurous.Total relationship material! It wasn’t a year later that they were engaged.Thomas proposed on his own birthday (Thomas knew she saw a proposal coming and still wanted to surprise her)! The two went out to dinner in the romantic downtown Thomasville, Georgia. It was after dinner, outside on the sidewalk lined with twinkling Christmas lights, that Thomas got down on one knee and asked for Katie’s hand in marriage. She was swept away! On February 22, the couple exchanged vows in front of loved ones as they were embraced by the wintery, Wyoming landscape.

the simple things Thomas and Katie’s wedding was very much a family affair! The morning of the wedding, Thomas and his father met the sunrise to choose a location for the ceremony. Shortly after, the soon-to-be bride and groom went into the town of Jackson to get their marriage license. Katie did her own hair and makeup, while her father wrote their vows, and brother officiated. Katie and Thomas’ mothers even gathered and designed the flowers! It was important to the couple for each close family member to have a major role in their coming together. The day was simple, meaningful and effortless. Most importantly, Thomas and Katie stayed present in the moment promising to love one another as husband and wife every day for the rest of their lives.

“After taking pictures and before heading to dinner, we stopped into the Mangy Moose for a drink. The place was PACKED full of people enjoying the evening after a hard day of skiing. We found our way to the front of the bar and made a toast to a lifetime of happiness. Everyone cheered and clinked glasses to celebrate and wish us luck!”

a honeymoon high “First off, we are from Tallahassee, Florida. So having a destination wedding in the Tetons was a pre honeymoon in itself! After the wedding, we spent the next few days skiing before heading to Maui, Hawaii! Our time was spent at the Andaz Maui resort in Wailea. We traveled to lavender fields, sipped cocktails in the sand, drove the road to hana and attended a traditional Hawaiian luau! We would do it all over again. I mean, what is better than watching the sunset in paradise as newlyweds?”

advice to rocky mountain couples “Keep things small and as simple as possible. Do not let anyone else makes decisions on how your day should be! Keep love and your relationship at the forefront of everything you do on your wedding day!”

I N S P I R AT I O N F R O M T H E B R I D E Our desire for our engagement photos was to showcase the beauty of Grand Teton National Park. So much of our time is spent adventuring, exploring and recreating in the park. It was only fitting that we payed a visit to some of our favorite spots. We started shooting on a natural bench by Blacktail Butte. The snow was firmly set up to walk on, and the sun was shining bright and warm against a bluebird sky. We continued north to Jackson Lake, where the magnitude of the Teton Range across the frozen lake made for a dramatic backdrop. Our photographer, Peter Lobozzo, was able to capture me in a red dress, which created a sharp contrast in color that popped against the sun-drenched and snowy landscape. We kept adventuring down to the Snake River and eventually ended our day with a champagne toast with the setting sun at our backs.
