Creating Heirlooms Have you ever wondered what makes a piece of jewelry an heirloom? Passed down from generation to generation, these cherished pieces of jewelry tell the stories of our families and the special moments they have shared. From turquoise stones to vintage squash blossoms, each piece carries with it a unique history and a special meaning that transcends time. Established in 1974 in Santa Fe, Peyote Bird Designs specializes in handcrafted artisan jewelry from and inspired by the American Southwest. With a focus on vintage and contemporary styles, the family-owned business strikes a refined balance between old and new, opening the opportunity for today’s bride to cultivate tradition through the pieces she wears on her wedding and remains in the family line for generations to follow. rocky mountain bride new mexico 2023 / rockymountainbride.com

The Squash Blossom Necklace A squash blossom necklace is more than just a fashion accessory, it holds a rich history and cultural significance in Native American communities. Named after the blossom of the squash plant, which it resembles in shape, the necklace typically features a series of silver beads or blossoms, interspersed with a crescent-shaped “Naja” pendant that is often adorned with turquoise or other gemstones. These unique and intricate necklaces are a stunning example of the artistry and craftsmanship of Indigenous people, and have become synonymous with special occasions such as wedding ceremonies.

A vintage double row cuff is an

equally striking and exquisite piece to incorporate in your look. This particular piece features two rows of meticulously inlaid turquoise stones in varying shades of blue and green, set against a backdrop of silver. The stones are expertly cut and shaped to fit together seamlessly, creating a stunning mosaic effect.

Turquoise drop earrings are a

statement design that can be worn on its own or as a glamorous set giving the appearance of Western flair to any bridal ensemble. Featuring natural American Turquoise from Kingman, Arizona, this pair of oval-shaped earrings are set in sterling silver with three delicate streams of waterfall detailing.

His & Hers His and hers matching wedding bands are a beautiful symbol of love and unity and serve as a lasting reminder of the promises made to each other. With different gemstones to reflect your personal taste and style, choose between traditional turquoise, mother of pearl, or black onyx.

14

rockymountainbride.com / rocky mountain bride new mexico 2023

Mother of Pearl Stunningly iridescent, mother of pearl has been a beloved choice of brides for centuries, and for good reason. Its soft, glowing luster achieves a classically sophisticated look that complements all wedding gown silhouettes and accessories.

Men’s Pieces Southwestern-inspired jewelry for men can take many forms, from rings and bracelets to necklaces and cuffs. Although nothing nods to New Mexico quite like a bolo tie. This type of necktie is a Western American staple consisting of a braided leather cord with decorative metal tips secured by an ornamental metal medallion or stone.

16

The Thunderbird is a legendary symbol in

many Native American cultures, representing strength, courage and protection. A thunderbird stick pin is an excellent choice for grooms who are looking for a unique and meaningful lapel pin to elevate their suit.

Vintage bolo ties with turquoise stones

can come in a variety of styles and designs, from simple and understated to elaborate and ornate. This Navajo necktie features a handful of smooth turquoise stones set in sawtooth bezels and the sterling silver base with tiny silver dots create a visually interesting pattern that draws the eye in various directions.

Embody the spirit of the Southwest by standing out from the rest with this vintage ring that highlights two natural stones. The vibrant rounds of turquoise are set in a dramatic bezel punctuated with elaborate details.

baked to perfection Known as Albuquerque’s esteemed cakery, Figs & Honey Cake Co. strives to use fresh and organic ingredients that are equally gorgeous as they are delicious. Handcrafted with care to celebrate love, all of their cakes, buttercreams and fillings are made with organic eggs, butter, dairy and fruit. “We use the highest quality chocolates and specialty confections,” shares the founder and designer, April Migliaccio. Whatever your design style, Figs & Honey can create an entirely unique cake to finish off your wedding day celebration.

the cake: Beautifully crafted, the Southwestern stenciled buttercream, in sunset hues, subtly honors your New Mexican wedding. Another way to stand out? meet the maker: Innocently enough, owner and artist, April, began baking since she could see over the kitchen counter. From a young age, the New Mexico native dreamt of opening her own bakery and in the summer of 2019, Figs & Honey became a sweet reality. While the wedding planning process can undoubtedly be stressful, working alongside April is a cakewalk. Her style is a touch out of the ordinary with a subtle twist on tradition all while creating an extraordinary cake to devour on your special occasion.

rocky mountain bride new mexico 2023 / rockymountainbride.com

21

the process: As you might expect, it starts with a conversation about bringing your vision to life. Couples will inquire through an online form and schedule a phone consultation to discuss reception specifics, flavor and filling options and, of course, design details. From there, April advises all of her engaged couples to submit mood boards with ideas and inspiration they have collected, which can come from photos of flowers, colors, or cakes. Official tastings take place three times a year with six flavors offered in a tasting box, typically this includes three classic flavors and three seasonal flavors to indulge in. Once the decision is made the fun begins for Figs & Honey. Surprisingly, baking the cake is the final step, prior to that April will source and order natural ingredients. The week of the wedding fillings are started and stored then the cake layers are baked and assembled. Stencils are used if a textured aesthetic is the goal. The night before the big day, the cake is stacked and adorned with fresh florals hours leading up to the reception.

22

the cake: Starting with four layers of anise cake then filled and finished with cinnamon Swiss meringue buttercream, the feminine three-toned cake is almost too pretty to eat. Inspired by biscochito, similar to shortbread or butter cookies, richly flavored with sugar, cinnamon, and anise, the recipe was influenced by local and indigenous customs.

the cake: Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it, too? Goodbye, vanilla. While subtle and traditional are oh-so-lovely, consider taking your all white wedding cake up a notch with multi-tier flavor. A lemon thyme cake sits atop a red velvet cake, both with textured white vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream.

Old West Meets New Mexico From mountains and mesas to volcanoes and rivers, New Mexico covers a vast territory that inspires wanderlust and awe. While Taos and Santa Fe are sought after by couples seeking solitude, nestled in the heart of Mesilla just five miles south of Las Cruces, the town’s historic plaza is much the same as it was over a hundred years ago with its striking adobe architecture and peacefully quiet streets. Clinging to its Spanish authenticity, Old Mesilla has retained its unique, unvarnished character and remains a hidden gem of the Southwest. Dedicated to the Western lifestyle and the raw emotions of those who live it, Raquel of RW Photography captures the essence of soulful love in an unlikely place. With roots that run deep, step back in time to the Wild West era where red chile ristras are strung, pecan groves thrive and an elopement story is told.

Inspired by the sentiment of a Southwestern romance, a talented team of New Mexican creatives intentionally designed this fairytale-esque editorial that draws on spring nuptials, golden colors and warm light. With Pueblo revival architecture as the backdrop, escape to El Monte Sagrado, a posh yet spiritual sanctuary in the historic town of Taos. APRIL 16

Micayla + Ivan Millions travel to visit and experience Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, each year. After all, there is magic around every corner. For Micayla and Ivan it was just another night of dancing at Señor Frogs after work. At the time, Micayla was finishing her internship as a Disney College Program participant and Ivan was working for the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Studios when they found each other on the dance floor. The pair parted ways, but messaged until the early hours of the morning and never looked back. With Micayla’s parents in on the secret, Ivan proposed four years later during the Kavanaugh family Christmas in Albuquerque. “That morning, I did the traditional pajamas and no makeup, and wondered why Ivan was getting ready to open presents in a full outfit so early, but still had no clue what was happening,” Micayla remembers. After sitting around the tree, someone suggested taking a family photo which provided the perfect opportunity for Ivan to get down on one knee and ask Micayla to marry him.

For their spring nuptials, the couple leaned into an intimate affair that allowed guests to feel welcomed and valued without having to worry about accommodations. “Since we were hosting a small wedding, it was top priority to make sure everyone was comfortable and ready for a great weekend with us.” Micayla says. With an eye for detail and design, the bride planned the big day herself, she even searched high and low for secondhand décor from antique and thrift stores. The overall essence? A more natural and found aesthetic, rather than formal. On the grounds of a dreamy desert retreat at a renovated historic adobe compound, Desert Compass, Micayla and Ivan exchanged vows officiated by the bride’s aunt and sealed with a kiss.

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Ultimately, it’s your day. Do what you and your partner want. We received a lot of advice on what we should and shouldn’t do, who to invite and who not to invite, but it was our goal from the beginning to make this day into something that was completely us, special and intimate. I think we did a pretty good job of making sure that nothing was going to stop that from happening.”

MAY 7

Tina + Charley

Neighbors to lovers, Tina and Charley met while living next door to one another in downtown Denver, Colorado. After four years of dating, Charley surprised Tina by getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him with the help of their dog, Margo. “Charley is an architect and we have been renovating our mid-century modern home since we first met. The home is very special to us and something we built truly together. We are not very public people, so the intimate and meaningful proposal in our home was exactly what I wanted,” explains Tina. Their wedding weekend started with a sunrise session at White Sands National Park followed by personal nuptials at the century-old retreat, Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi, in the heart of downtown Santa Fe. If marrying your soulmate couldn’t get any sweeter, think again. Just one day before saying “I do” Tina and Charley found themselves falling in love with a small black puppy who suddenly appeared during their pre-wedding photo shoot. “About halfway through the shoot, our photographer noticed a silhouette following us in the background of the photos. Shot by shot, the little silhouette got closer and closer. At the end, as we turned back to our cars, a sweet black puppy was sitting within 50 yards from us. With our wedding the next day and having an anxious dog at home we were not intending to keep her, but after a few hours with her, we started to fall in love. We are now home, happy and our dog loves her new little sister,” says Tina.

58

rockymountainbride.com / rocky mountain bride new mexico 2023

It was especially important for Tina and Charley to keep the day intentional with moments that were authentic and spoke true to them. The couple forwent tradition by getting ready together the morning of the wedding followed by a first look before the ceremony which is a memory the bride and groom say they will cherish forever. Focused on timeless storytelling Klaus James Photography captured the emotions and details on camera as it unfolded for a tangible keepsake.

Similar to the proposal, the ceremony was an intimate affair with 14 guests. Family members gathered inside the Spanish-style walls of the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi to witness Tina and Charley wed. The library created an ideal atmosphere to exchange vows with a wood-burning fireplace, a viga-beamed ceiling and natural light gently gleaming through the windows. “Our ceremony was everything we hoped for. Keeping with our intimate, Southwestern theme, it was magical having our entire family share this moment with us. We wanted to get married in a place we feel at home and at peace and that is Santa Fe,” shares the couple. rocky mountain bride new mexico 2023 / rockymountainbride.com

JUNE 12

Anusha + Nick

A modern-day romance in the technological age, Anusha and Nick connected on Hinge in January 2019 while living in San Francisco, California. The two met at a bar in Hayes Valley on a Wednesday evening after work and instantly bonded over backpacking in Ecuador, Midwestern values, cultural experiences and their interest in food and cooking. When Anusha graciously walked Nick to his Uber in the rain, he knew she was the one; Anusha was not convinced until later when Nick cooked her a decadent dinner on Valentine’s Day. In the first year of their relationship, the couple traveled thousands of miles together from Oregon and Italy to London and Germany, just to name a few. With several adventures under their belts, Nick asked for Anusha’s parents’ blessing to marry their daughter. Then, in late July during a stay in Santa Fe, Nick proposed. Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the pair trekked seven miles to Nambé Falls. At the peak overlooking the breathtaking alpine lake, Nick asked Anusha if she wanted a nectarine from his backpack, but instead of fruit, he presented a ring. After saying “Yes!” and descending the mountain, the newly minted fiancés celebrated with a bottle of Daou Cabernet Sauvignon that Nick hid in the car. A sentimental wine that they shared on their very first weekend getaway together.

Anusha and Nick spent time exploring the City Different in 2020 and felt an instant connection to the oldest capital city in the country. “Somehow, we literally felt an energy emanating from the ground that we had never felt anywhere else before. We appreciated the confluence of cultures that came together in New Mexico - from Spanish to Mexican to Native American. It felt like a melting pot of cultures and arts and beliefs - something that we were drawn to given our backgrounds of growing up abroad before coming to the United States and being the products of different cultures. Also, we found the nature and natural diversity to be really stunning. The starkness of the desert was beautiful, but we also found alpine forests, mountains, mesas, and wide open plains. If you drive a half hour, the landscape would be totally different. For those reasons, we knew we wanted to get married in New Mexico and share our love for the place with all our friends and family,” explains the bride and groom.

The couple went on to secure Blame Her Ranch, a 1,650 acre property just outside of Santa Fe at the southernmost tip of Glorieta Mesa for a three-day celebration with culture-rich festivities full of tradition. Prior to the Indian Hindu wedding, Anusha and Nick participated in a Haldi ceremony where friends and family smear turmeric paste on the bride and groom to bless them before the wedding. Later in the day, Anusha and Nick donned clean new outfits, custom designed in India for the Sangeet. A celebratory event which translates to music night or musical dancing. After an evening of choreographed performances, the Muhurtham ceremony took place on Sunday morning. While the Muhurtham is composed of several events that culminate to eventually tying the knot, the timing of the Muhurtham is extremely significant, where as, per the Hindu astrological calendar, a priest will determine the most auspicious time to wed the bride and groom based on their birth charts.

Following the rituals that were incorporated into the nuptials such as, Maalai Maatral meaning ‘exchange of garlands’, Saptapadi the seven steps in Sanskrit, and gazing upon the sky to seek wisdom from the stars, Anusha and Nick wanted to shake things up and celebrate their love a different way during the Baraat. Traditionally, the groom rides into the ceremony, oftentimes on a horse before he weds his bride. However, Anusha could not pass up the opportunity to be on a horse alongside Nick, so they chose to ride out of the ceremony on two beautiful white horses guided by spiritual wranglers with spectacular headdresses. “Our guests followed us, dancing along to a traditional Native American drummer and a DJ blasting beats, having a great time,” shares Anusha.

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Create diverse spaces and environments for your guests. I think our guests appreciated being able to explore different settings on property depending on their mood. It helped our guests to feel comfortable, especially over the long weekend, and facilitated really wonderful connections between our guests. Also, provide thoughtful food and drink to unify the events and make people feel provided for.”

Channing + Jett

Texas couple Channing and Jett found love at the young age of 15 and 17 while attending the same high school. The first date? Sonic. Because when you are a freshman and junior that’s the cool thing to do without breaking the bank. As they had hoped, the cherry limeade and romantic drive-in date were well worth it. Fast forward five years, Jett proposed at Buffalo Springs Lake nestled in the Yellow House Canyon of Lubbock, Texas, where he told Channing he loved her for the first time in 2016.

Early on Channing and Jett knew they wanted an intimate, yet beautiful wedding in a place near to their hearts. With ties to New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the couple chose Taos to celebrate their union. As a creative, Channing approached the planning process with open arms and a clear vision of a sunset color scheme inspired by her soon-to-be-spouse always calling her his sunshine. Just in time for the peak of summer, vibrant shades of marigold, lemon and wild strawberry pink graced the southwestern setting.

Perched atop Outlaw Hill at 7,200 feet where desperadoes and outlaws once stood on lookout, the Stakeout provided a quiet mountain presence and abundant fields of sage as Channing and Jett exchanged handwritten promises to each other in the presence of 130 loved ones. “It was such a beautiful setting to share our love surrounded by those we cherish,” shares the bride.

Angela + Richard A lot can come from a really good cup of coffee. Angela and Richard met at Pennylane Coffee in New York City, New York, in 2016. “We matched on a dating app. She dodged me for weeks! Finally, one fateful afternoon, she let slip that she was free for an hour, so I asked if she would meet me for coffee across the street from her office in Midtown,” recalls Richard. “It was an offer I couldn’t refuse!” says Angela, “I was dressed like my girl Ruth Bader Ginsberg, business bun, no nonsense outfit. I had forgotten everything about him, what he looked like, what his hobbies were; it was like walking into a blind date. I watched him wave from the doorway, I saw his bright green eyes and dimpled smile, and I just felt warm.” The two hit it off and discovered they had similar interests; their love of snow sports, spontaneous travel, and a dream of one day adopting a husky mix which they did together and named him Odin. Three years later on December 18th, the couple’s proposal resembled a scene from a Hallmark movie. It all started with a white lie, when Richard fibbed about the evening’s final destination. “It was such a New York moment, trying to hail a yellow cab in the snow, slipping and sliding as we made our way through Central Park, and then, at this random little Christmas Tree next to our favorite place, I turned around to see Richard on one knee!” reminisces Angela.

When the global pandemic hit, the couple ultimately decided against waiting to wed and held an intimate ceremony with immediate family in New Hampshire. However, that did not stop them from planning a sophisticated black tie celebration with moody fall colors and a vintage vibe at La Posada de Santa Fe. Angela and Richard drew inspiration from favored clubs and venues from their former home in NYC, bringing in elements of classic 1920’s décor and southwestern elements such as el Día de los Muertos complete with a disco ball to light the ballroom. The newlyweds wanted their guests to experience Santa Fe for its rich history, breathtaking landscape and to leave feeling like they had been immersed in culture from the start to the end of the festivities. “We never gave up hope that one day, we would host the celebration we so desired with loved ones and friends in the city that we love, and that it would be so worth the wait - and we did, and it was,” shares the couple.

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “The journey is the destination. It’s so easy to get lost in the details and fret over linen colors or table placements, but truthfully, the planning process is longer than the wedding itself. Be present in the moment with one another and find joy in this special time that you are spending together. Once the train leaves the station and the wedding begins, let go and let it take you on a ride you’ll never forget!”

Aubrey + TJ Aubrey and TJ met while attending New Mexico State University. Unlike other students whose love blossomed on campus, the now-couple crossed paths in probably one of the most unique and unexpected places; a sheep barn. During their second semester of studying Animal Science, the class was to participate in lamb checks which consisted of going to the barn at midnight to see if any babies had been born. By the third encounter over lambing season, Aubrey and TJ couldn’t stop talking. Eight months later, TJ proposed late one evening in the mountains. As Aubrey drove up the mountain pass to meet her beau for photos, or so she thought, TJ stood in the middle of the road waiting with a bouquet of flowers in hand to ask her to marry him. After visiting Log River Ranch in the fall, the couple absolutely fell in love with the 40 acre property situated along the banks of the Rio Chama. Sure enough, they headed back to tie the knot one year later for an early autumnal celebration. This time, they were able to share the rustic setting and fresh golden foliage with 100 of their family and friends.

Honoring a decade in the making. With a marriage rooted in hard work, honest conversations, and continual growth, Brit and Corey not only embrace the stages of their relationship, but celebrate them. “The first few years of our relationship were quite challenging and I think it’s important to normalize that while sometimes ‘you just know’, and that’s what’s praised in our culture, oftentimes it takes intentional, meaningful work,” Brit shares. To commemorate the evolution of their love, Brit and Corey traveled to the Land of Enchantment for an anniversary photo shoot with Elizabeth Wells Photography. While the couple calls Colorado home, the state of New Mexico has long enchanted Brit through the eras of her life and easily became a place that Corey fell in love with over the years. “It’s hard to even put into words the unique feeling of Northern New Mexico, but the land is one we both feel incredibly at home in,” they explain.

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Honestly, laughing together, as simple as it is, has such healing powers. Being playful and silly in your love is just the best and is so special to staying connected to one another. Also, you can never say ‘I love you’ too much - ever. Communication is key. Make sure your partner is both a good and willing communicator. You come together as two different individuals with different stories, experiences, expectations, etc. It’s important to be able to communicate through it all. That goes for communication within your relationship, but also when it is your own personal issues that you may be hesitant to share. Lastly, always remember it is you two versus the problem, you’re a team.”

The courtship between Sharon and Bill began in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico. After dating for five months and spending a summer apart, the couple realized they never wanted to be separated again. That was in 1968. Today, Sharon and Bill have been married for 55 years and call the rugged solitude of the Southwest home. To document their anniversary, Amanda Avery photographed their romance among a towering castle-like stone formation on the Navajo Nation Reservation that is reminiscent of a volcanic eruption 30 million years ago.

The wedding invitation suite is the first impression guests will have of the wedding aesthetic. It often sets the tone and evokes excitement for what’s to come. From the official invitation itself to the response cards, each piece of paper plays an important role in conveying the style of the celebration. As such, it’s essential to create a cohesive narrative throughout the stationery. If the ins and outs of proper etiquette or design process seem a touch overwhelming, consider working alongside artists such as Funky Olive Design Company and Letterpress Made to dream up your bespoke vision.

the beginning There is magic in the desert that has taken the wedding world by storm. Simply put, Southwestern style is having a moment and modern, fun shapes, soft curves and gorgeous graphics set the tone for an unbelievably cool, designforward celebration. This particular color palette leans bohemian chic with spicy pops of sienna, clay and terracotta.

A beautiful suite sure to inspire couples hosting a Southwestern soirée. The deep, rich hue of burnt orange contrasted against ivory and cream exudes boldness and personality. Capture the hearts of all who open the terracotta-toned envelope and see a glimpse of the handsketched illustration of where the ceremony will commence. A coordinating wax seal with a Zia sun symbol adorning the belly band is a distinctive insignia of New Mexico, adding an elevated homage to Spanish tradition.

Like any great love, cultivate a story through artful watercolor instead of words. Sealed up neatly in an envelope, a stunning visual of the venue can effortlessly transform into a cherished keepsake on display in your home.
