It’s here. It’s finally here! Welcome to the first edition of Rocky Mountain Bride Utah Fall/Winter!

We are so excited to show off the beauty Utah possesses in the chillier autumn and winter months. From the changing of the leaves in Little Cottonwood Canyon and the crisp breeze you feel across your skin as you walk with your fiancé through downtown Salt Lake City to the crackling fires made for snuggling up close to your lover, there is something so inviting about this time of year and we hope you feel that within the pages ahead.

BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS

Nearly seven years ago, Ali and Jeff’s modern love story unfolded on Facebook when Jeff slid into Ali’s DM’s. The pair arranged a first date in their hometown where they both felt an instant connection and began dating the following day. Five years later, the couple celebrated Valentine’s Day in downtown Detroit, Michigan. Jeff planned a romantic getaway at a historic hotel which included cocktails at one of the oldest Jazz bars in the city. While Ali expected a weekend of fun, little did she know the most beautiful proposal awaited her. The morning of the proposal started with mimosas and massages at a luxurious spa. Later in the day they spent the afternoon at the Detroit Institute of Art Museum where Jeff proposed under an archway in the presence of a hundred people. To top it all off, Jeff’s sister was hiding with a professional camera to capture the moment.

SHANIA + JAKE CAPITOL

REEF NATIONAL PARK

Shania and Jake knew each other for some time when Jake invited her over for a movie night. The pair immediately clicked and ended up talking through the movie. Since then, they became best friends and lovers. Two years later, Jake popped the question at The Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City where the proposal was indeed grand. “Jake held my hand and led me out into the courtyard where lights were strung, flowers in bloom, the fountain flowing, and soft music playing in the distance. I immediately knew what was happening; my stomach was full of butterflies and I already had tears in my eyes,” Shania shares. Two chairs were perfectly placed in front of a projector and a bouquet of all white flowers laid on the chair for the bride-to-be. As the couple sat down, a compilation film unfolded across the screen of Shania and Jake throughout the years accompanied by “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley. When the video ended, Jake got down on one knee and asked Shania to marry him. The answer, of course, was a resounding “Yes!”

SALT LAKE CITY

During the summer of 2019, Gabrielle’s roommate, Caitlin started dating Nate. Tired of being the third wheel, Gabrielle asked Caitlin if Nate had any cute friends she could set her up with. Then, a month later, Gabrielle met Nate’s best friend, Oscar for the first time on a double date in Provo. As soon as Gabrielle laid eyes on Oscar, she was immediately smitten, and as they say, “the rest is history.” After Oscar proposed in the backyard of Gabrielle’s childhood home, the couple began planning their Rocky Mountain I do.

LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON

Emily and Daniel first met through one of Emily’s close friends. The pair developed a friendship overtime and by the spring of 2020 they found themselves together everyday. Nearly five months later, Emily and Daniel officially started dating; it wasn’t long before the couple felt that each other was the one. Fast forward on a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, Daniel proposed at the bottom of the Hualalai Volcano in the city of KailuaKona on a flower strewn pier at sundown with calm and clear waters surrounding them.

PROVO CANYON

It all started when a mutual friend suggested to Connor that he might hit things off with a girl named Rachel. When Connor asked Rachel on a date, she happened to be abroad serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After she returned home, Connor eagerly picked her up for their long awaited date where they spent the evening laughing and getting to know each other enjoying a picnic spread on the lawn of the Capitol Building. Nearly a year later, the couple paid a visit to the The Brigham Young University Museum of Art. After touring the basement level, Rachel and Connor walked up to the Main Level where she noticed an exhibit that hadn’t been on display earlier; four paintings held on easels with the very last canvas covered in golden fabric. As Connor led Rachel past each piece, she realized the hand-painted artwork were significant moments in their relationship. The first painting represented a date during their courtship, the second of the night they said “I love you,” the third of a special day spent at the beach when they talked about the future, and the fourth showed Connor down on one knee, proposing in the museum. As Rachel turned towards Connor, there he was on one knee with a ring, asking for her hand in marriage. To which, of course, she said, “Yes!” Suddenly, family and friends emerged from the balcony to celebrate the newly engaged couple.

Nick + Ryan

In 2017 in San Francisco, California, Nick was reading on Baker Beach when he saw Ryan walk by with a mutual friend. Nick and Ryan introduced themselves and felt immediate chemistry, but they forgot to exchange numbers. Fortunately fate brought them into the same yoga class a week later; Ryan held the door for Nick on the way out of class, they exchanged information, and Nick asked Ryan out on a first date. They’ve been together ever since. Three years later, Ryan planned a weekend to celebrate the couple’s anniversary at the Lodge at Blue Sky outside of Park City, where their family resides. On the first night, they went on an evening hike and ended up at a yurt overlooking the surrounding mountains. A gorgeous golden hour backdrop and curated meal was waiting for them in addition to the first bottle of wine they ever shared. Ryan popped the question, and Nick, of course, said, “Yes!” Their pup, Wrigley, was also there for the occasion.

SWEET BEGINNINGS

Nick and Ryan coincidentally got engaged on the same property as High West Distillery where they stood in front of all their loved ones to exchange vows. “Park City has always been a second home. Our relationship grew over the winters on Park City Mountain and hot summers tubing down the Provo River, we couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere other than Utah,” Ryan recounts.

While Mikayla attended Jake’s surprise party for his sixteenth birthday, the two had actually never met. Mikayla had heard from a friend that there would be a mechanical bull on site so there was no stopping her from making an appearance at the party. Afterwards, Mikayla and Jake connected and became close friends. A few months later, what was once a purely platonic relationship flourished into a high school romance. The couple dated throughout their high school years before Jake was sent off to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After two years apart, Jake returned home where he was reunited with Mikayla. Five years later, Jake proposed with every girl’s dream proposal scene. With the help of a local photographer, Jake orchestrated a faux photoshoot for him and Mikayla to model, which they had done before. Little did she know, Jake had a different agenda this time around. The couple ventured into the snow-swept mountains of Midway to take photos as planned and before Mikayla knew it, Jake was on a rug decorated with flowers and glimmering candles, asking her to marry him. On August 21st, Mikayla and Jake invited 500 of their friends and family members to watch as they said, “I do” at a private residence in the picturesque Heber Valley.

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

Set against a backdrop of modernly fun shapes in hues of burnt orange, rust, and cream, the bride and groom exchanged personal heartfelt promises. Bundles of pampas grass and terracotta-toned florals covered the ceremony space from the aisle markers to the abstract arch. After locking lips, the newlyweds rejoiced down the aisle as husband and wife with a dramatic dip, we all know and love.

JUMP INTO HAPPILY EVER AFTER

Once guests made their way to the reception site, they were greeted by a beautiful white bounce house and grazing table with a colorful spread to feast on and mingle over. “It was so fun for Jake and I to let loose and jump around in the bounce house,” the bride shares. As the sun went down, cold spark machines illuminated the sky for an unforgettable grand exit.

“Things will go wrong, but that is okay! I always thought my wedding needed to be perfect. On your big day try to not stress about the little details and just soak it all in. Even if things go wrong, it will give you something to laugh about later. Our wedding day went by so fast and I wish I could have lived in the moment more. For this, I also recommend a day-of planner. As for marriage, just keep dating. Jake and I have had such a fun first year of marriage because we make date night a priority.”

Shawn + Clayton

While Shawn and Clayton met in Denver, Colorado, nearly ten years ago, the pair became friends and briefly dated before going their separate ways. As fate would have it, they ended up crossing paths again and the spark shared between them so many years earlier was still very much afire. Just before the global pandemic, the couple snuck away to Mexico for an extended weekend. They fell in love with each other and the small town. With hopes of taking time off work to live in Mexico the following winter, Shawn and Clayton made that dream a reality. After two months of living in the quaint town where their love flourished, Clayton proposed at a secret beach as the sun drifted beyond the horizon. Together they planned a natural and intimate wedding adventure.

“When we started to talk about what our wedding should be, we both felt strongly about wanting to keep the ceremony intimate and small. The idea of pulling off a river trip with our families and closest friends felt ambitious and a little risky, but we couldn’t deny how perfectly ‘us’ it would be. The fact that we were able to spend the entire weekend with the people we love most, and knowing that everyone there genuinely loves and supports us, was truly magical.”

Samantha + Joseph

While Samantha and Joey lived in the same townhome community in Scottsdale, Arizona, the two never met until a fateful encounter at an Italian pizza restaurant. The two joke that the universe had them doing concentric circles around each other for quite some time before finally crossing paths. Nearly a year later on December 29th, Samantha and Joey escaped to L’Auberge de Sedona after the holiday festivities for an early New Year’s celebration. At the time, Samantha was convinced if Joey had planned on popping the question it would have been during Christmas with her family present so, a proposal didn’t seem likely. That afternoon the couple poured a glass of wine and walked along the property’s creek to feed the resident ducks. Situated on the lawn near the water sat a bench where Joey suggested taking a moment to relax. Right then and there, Joey got down on one knee to propose to Samantha. She eagerly squealed “Yes” before Joey completed his sentence.

A LOVE AFFAIR IN THE MOUNTAIN AIR

For the ceremony, the couple chose Goldener Hirsch’s Alfresco Terrace surrounded by the autumn palette of green foliage to vibrant shades of yellow and orange. To complement the sophisticated Deer Valley venue, a dramatic round arch embellished with a variety of greenery, flowers, and feathery pampas grass created a lovely textured backdrop for the exchange of vows.

Debi and Scott met while riding bikes in a local bicycle club and immediately hit it off. Two years later, the couple planned a pre-Christmas holiday together at Blackberry Mountain in Walland, Tennessee. As they were enjoying a romantic dinner in front of a wood burning fire, Scott excused himself for a moment then returned and got down on one knee to ask Debi to marry him.

Prior to the ceremony, Debi and Scott shared an unforgettable first look moment with a stunningly romantic backdrop. “Scott waited in the private patio area just outside our room at Amangiri. Sarah was enrolled in esthetician school where she met Stephen’s cousin, Sophie. The girls quickly became friends and soon enough Sophie was playing matchmaker. “She always told me she had the cutest cousin and she wanted to introduce me to him,” Sarah explains. One day, Sarah received a call from Stephen asking her for a date, like a proper gentleman, we might add. That September, after a dinner in downtown Salt Lake City, the couple took a romantic drive through a canyon. It wasn’t long before Stephen pulled off to the side of the road and suggested walking to the view of the valley, the lake, and the sunset over the mountains. With a golden haze setting, Stephen proposed to Sarah. The bride and groom planned a chic winter wedding in the city.

For the ceremony, Sarah and Stephen were married in the Payson Utah Temple where a sealing ordinance was performed. “Being inside our holy temple surrounded by our intimate group of family and friends is a moment we’ll never forget! We had a close family friend seal us in the temple. It was so personal and sweet. It is very emotional and touching. The most peaceful moments of my life being next to my sweetheart and becoming husband and wife forever!” the bride shares.

Sam + Jordan

Samantha was visiting in St. Pete, Florida, for a college roommate’s birthday celebration when Jordan’s sister, Meredith, introduced the pair. Little did Samantha and Jordan know that the connection they made would change the rest of their lives. They began dating and after two and a half years, Jordan proposed on what would have been the 146th Kentucky Derby in 2020, his favorite day of the year. The couple planned an elegant elopement at St. Regis Deer Valley with a touch of rustic charm to match the stunning scenery.

With the help of Jana Tobey, Founder of Wedding Hero, Samantha and Jordan decided to cancel their large scale wedding and elope among slopeside sophistication. The modern, mountain lodge ambiance was the perfect setting for an intimate winter affair complete with a bottle of bourbon and an oversized fur coat for the bride. “Being Floridians, we love the cold and wanted to get married somewhere beautiful,” Samantha says.

SLOPESIDE SOPHISTICATION

Amber + Chris

When Amber agreed to photograph a wedding in Cape Cod, Massachusetts in tandem with a friend, the main photographer, she never imagined meeting her future-husband at the event. “Everything flowed effortlessly that day and toward the end of the evening while taking sunset portraits of the newlyweds, I asked my friend if we could take a photo together. I looked around for a willing participant and saw a guest standing nearby, sipping on his cocktail,” Amber recalls. She asked the man if he could take their photo, to which he replied, “only if I get to wear your camera harness.” The two flirtatiously argued back and forth until Amber finally gave in and helped him into it. After Chris took the picture, the pair continued to chat and exchanged phone numbers before the reception came to an end. The following morning, Amber and Chris began texting nonstop.

Two years later, Chris planned a festive proposal on a walk from dinner to a DJ party in Boston. As the couple and their group of friends made their way through the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, a grand allée of trees strung with Christmas lights, Amber spotted a proposal set-up ahead. Being a wedding photographer, she immediately grabbed her camera to capture the exciting moment, however the arrangement left her puzzled as she noticed a small crowd of spectators and not a couple in sight. Suddenly, Chris grabbed Amber’s hand leading her into the gorgeous display and that’s when she finally understood what was about to take place! Chris got down on one knee and asked Amber to marry him.

SNOW COVERED CELEBRATION

Not only did the bride and groom say “I do” outdoors in a temperature of 3°F with the windchill, but after the ceremony they swapped shoes for boots, threw on balaclavas, strapped into snowboards, and rode down the mountainside fully dressed in their wedding attire. “It was such an adrenaline rush and we felt on top of the world!” shares the couple.

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES

“If I have any advice for couples planning their wedding, it is to do what you want to do! Don’t lose sight of the fact that this day is about celebrating your love for one another and the transition into the next chapter of your lives. Make a list of all of the activities you would do together on the best day (or days) ever, and then build your experience around those. You will never regret prioritizing yourselves.”
