Autumn Issue

We love the new autumn designs from H&M’s home range. Instantly update your bedroom with their stunning bed cover sets. (hm.ccom)

ISSUE No 10

EDITOR'SWELCOME

I

can’t believe Autumn is already upon us. I must admit it is one of my favourite times of the year. When the cool evenings set in, I love to pull the bed covers up and rest in the warmth. So to celebrate ‘Sleeptember’ we have put together a guide to help you relax and sleep well this autumn. As the days get shorter with less natural light we have chosen some of our favourite lighting to help illuminate your home. Also included is an interview with artist William Oxer whose breath-taking paintings have been causing quite a stir on the art scene. With all the usual designer tips, interviews, home tours, restaurant and hotel reviews we have something for everyone in this new issue. As always a big thank-you to all our loyal readers, it is a pleasure to compose each issue with you in mind. Enjoy the Autumn issue and look out for our Christmas Special coming in November!

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN?

I have always loved Christian Liaigre. WHAT WAS THE BRIEF BEHIND YOUR RECENT PROJECT IN THE PENTHOUSE IN KNIGHTSBRIDGE?

The brief was to create a contemporary slick environment with its own personality. This apartment has large windows with amazing views across the capital and getting the right balance between natural light and functional light was essential. It was also important to make the apartment feel warm and welcoming, as there was so much glass in the property prior to renovation. It felt cold and more commercial than a home. The client also wished to display personal treasures as they collect antique accessories so we worked pieces into the contemporary scheme which created character and individuality. WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING AND REWARDING WITH THE FINAL DESIGN?

The most rewarding thing at the end of each project is seeing your vision come to life and the client’s reaction to the final product.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU START CARTERTYBERGHEIN?

CarterTyberghein was formed in 1997. Why did I start my own practice? Well, it was a natural progression, I suppose. It was always in the back of my mind. My uncle, who was an accomplished architect and artist, had without a doubt influenced me from an early age as I completely loved everything about his work and the atmosphere of his studio and this gave me some kind of direction in life. Trine and Torben started creating their new home about a year ago. Prior to that, they used to live in a studio flat that was meant to contain all the functions of a compact living space. Now that they have a few more rooms they really enjoy having the opportunity to create a different character in each room. Torben prefers their home to have a bit of a Rock´n´Roll vibe, while Trine has a fondness for feminine and French bohemian details. On top of that, Torben likes contrasting colours, pop art and the artist Roy Lichtenstein, whilst Trine finds beauty in bright and delicate nuances.
“So it is no secret that is has been a bit of a challenge finding a mutual stylistic agreement, but most of the time it has been a fun journey together” Trine recalls with a smile. Trine’s favorite spot in the apartment is the kitchen, where a shimmering light shines in through the windows. From

Myriam Ruffo, head of bedroom and bathroom at IKEA said: “With more and more people using mobiles and tablets in the bedroom and bathroom, these rooms are no longer safe havens where people can go to relax and revitalise. Technology is encroaching on the bedroom and bathroom,

limiting their healing powers; and this severely compromises people’s ability to cope with everyday stresses and strains. It’s vital that people create a space where they can completely escape and find ways to organise their lives to combat stress before it has even begun. Luckily, there are lots of small changes that people can make within the home, from getting their clothes ready the night before to keeping a pen and paper next to their bed to write down any nighttime worries,

which will give them a better and more stress-free start to the day.” Morning stress is most likely to be driven by overtiredness, being late and feeling overweight; linking back to the number of correspondents who were woken in the night due to stress, with 47 per cent admitting it made them feel tired all the time, and over a third saying it put them in a bad mood. SLEEPTEMBER 10 TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU RELAX AT NIGHT FROM THE SLEEP COUNCIL

1.

Eliminate noise and learn how to relax before bed. Sudden loud noises disrupt sleep. Invest in double-glazing or foam ear plugs to muffle annoying noise. Steady, low sounds are soothing and also help block out other noises. Some people may find special ‘white noise’ tapes help them sleep better.

2.

Run yourself a warm foamy bath an hour before bedtime – this raises your temperature and the sleep mechanism is triggered by the core body temperature cooling down.

3.

Prepare a milky drink or herbal tea for your late night cuppa – avoid caffeine such as tea, coffee or chocolate.

4.

Many sleep tips involve the use of lavender/lavender oil as a relaxant, while this does work it should NEVER EVER be used in pregnancy (like many other oils – check with a health care professional (GP/midwife/pharmacist).

5.

Don’t use alcohol as a sleep aid – it plays havoc with sleep patterns. It may help you fall asleep initially, but will interrupt your sleep later on in the night. You will wake dehydrated.

Regular, moderate exercise such as swimming or walking can help relieve the day’s stresses and strains. But not too close to bedtime or it may keep you awake!

7.

Deal with worries or a heavy workload by making lists of things to be tackled the next day.

8.

Resolve any arguments before bed. Ongoing conflicts are not conducive to putting you in the right frame of mind for sleep!

9.

When you get into bed, try to relax by reading a book, listening to some soothing music or even do some yoga - all help to relax both the mind and body.

10.

A dark room is most conducive for sleep as light tells your body it’s time to wake up. In darkness, your body releases a hormone called melatonin that relaxes your body helping you to drift off. Light suppresses melatonin. Invest in lamp or dimmer light if you want to read in bed. Blue light also inhibits the night-time secretion of melatonin so turn off computers, mobile phones etc. Find out more at www.sleepcouncil.org.uk

AMINDER VIRDEE Aminder Virdee is a London born artist, and disability equality activist, currently residing in Scotland. She graduated from University of Westminster in 2012 with a First Class Honours in BA (Hons) Mixed Media Fine Art. Aminder's interest in art began when she was first handed a pair of safety scissors at the age of two by her occupational therapist. Aminder was asked

to replicate exactly what the therapist was doing; so, for hours they created paper chains of people. From that day, any piece of paper that came her way would be transformed into something new.

I seek to identify issues surrounding image acceptability in the mainstream media, and how Having exhibited across artists and activists have used numerous galleries in London, transgressive reappropriation Aminder was recently featured to subvert existing forms." on London’s Artlyst website as Aminder Virdee. an emerging artist of 2014.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

LISA'S KITCHEN & BAR Lisa's is a stylish contemporary Swedish restaurant and bar in London’s uber fashionable Notting Hill area. Located at 305 Portobello Road, Lisa's delivers a unique culinary experience coloured by owner Lisa Wallén's Swedish roots and childhood memories. Every dish is made with ingredients selected from Lisa's Scandinavian pantry and the menu is dictated by Sweden’s four distinct seasons of the year. The style is one of rustic

food, prepared with a modern simplicity. The vibrant bar is proving a popular destination in itself, with amazing cocktails prepared by head bartender Ebba, exciting seasonal events such as summer crayfish parties and live music on Friday evenings. Lisa’s love of food stems back to childhood memories of she and her sister being taken out to dinner by their father in Sweden and much of this was

her inspiration for Lisa’s, “I used to love all the smells and listening to all the people. I remember seeing the restaurant owner sat at the end of the bar or at a little table in the corner with a cigar and a glass of wine or a whiskey, warmly shaking hands with each client who came over to him. For me, the owner was the person who created the whole atmosphere and everything inside was special because of him.”

Witnessing the rise of chain restaurants during her international career, Lisa was determined to recreate that unique warm, welcoming atmosphere when she eventually opened her own establishment. With heart and soul invested and with her own name above the door, Lisa opened her first restaurant and bar in London during the summer of 2013 and as she explains, “I chose the name Lisa’s so people can always relate to the place with a ‘face’ as I’m always here.” The majority of the food at Lisa’s is served tapas-style which has proved an excellent way of introducing Swedish cuisine to Notting Hill and clients are presented with traditional Swedish food with a modern twist, including different types of meat, fish and seafood depending on the seasons. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available and Lisa’s is also able to offer gluten-free bread and desserts courtesy of Swedish gluten-free bakery Fria Gluten Free. Lisa is keen to keep a local feel to her restaurant and as well as sourcing fish and seafood from the local fishmonger, George's Fisheries on Ladbroke Grove.
