utumn has well and truly arrived! With the darker evenings and colder mornings, the warmth of indoors is beckoning us. This season it’s all about textures in the home, so with this in mind we have created a gallery of flooring and feature on wall coverings - inspiration for bringing an added depth to your home. As our children start to play indoors with the colder weather we have also looked at a few ideas to bring their rooms to life and inspire their imaginations! With a real home tour and interview with the talented designer Sophie Ashby, we have something for everyone this season. Thanks to all our readers who nominated us recently for the Amara Interior Awards, we were overwhelmed by all the support and votes!

MEET THE DESIGNER

SOPHIE ASHBY Inrerior designer Sophie Ashby creates spaces with a unqiue identity. Ashby's aim is to bring authenticity to each project, not only in the selection of furniture, lighting and art but in its use of a natural palette of materials and textures.

Unswayed by the passing dictates of fashion, Ashby draws on her love of antiques, colour, contemporary 'world art', modernist furniture, photography and her latest discoveries to deliver an eclectic richness to each interior

We caught up with Sophie to discuss her latest project in King's Cross, her inspiration and top tips for decorating your home.

INTERIOR DESIGN QUARTERLY

WHAT WAS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR CAREER IN INTERIORS?

Above all, this is a very personal endeavour. A strong architectural and design sensibility developed over the following years, along with sound mentorship and a personal curiosity for “beautiful things” has led me to where I am today. Essentially, what we try to maintain is that each project has a unique identity. What is important to me is that our designs resonate authenticity in our selection of furniture, lighting and art. I definitely have a ’style’, a mood and feel which I really believe in and so all of our projects have a few threads that run through them, though these can of course be manifested in many different ways.

explicit narrative are also really important. WHO DO YOU ADMIRE WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN?

I have an army of design heroes who I believe do what they do perfectly and gracefully: Joseph Dirand, Jonathan Reed, Jacques Granges, Pierro Lissoni to name a few. I look to fashion quite a bit too. I think Phoebe Philo (Creative Director of Céline) is a powerhouse of creativity and originality. Swedish brand Acne Studios is in a league of its own for that archetypal flavour of newness and minimalist cool. Without sounding too clichéd, being in the presence of big, overwhelming nature inspires me. I recently went to Botswana and was in awe of the scale of everything - the size of the sky, the depth of the horizon. It makes you feel like anything is possible.

I have always felt that design is a way of articulating our experience. To live in a space that has been considered, created and curated with love, thought and attention can actually amplify and support us in the way we live our lives. To break it down, with every project I start by considering these three things; 1. The Beauty of Things - By this I mean how we are going to articulate what I call the 'poetry of the materials' we want to use and how they will be used and also how the light is affecting the space, how it moves and changes and what it does to a room. 2. Form/Function - How the space needs to be utilised, how the inhabitants of the property are going to live and what is needed.

3. Personality/Identity - Once you understand the person or people that are going to inhabit WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO the space, the reality of who CLIENTS? they are, what they do, what I take the ‘human approach’ matters to them and their to interior design and strive relationships with each other – to create design that is both you create a coherent whole. WHAT WAS THE BRIEF BEHIND YOUR RECENT KING’S CROSS PROJECT?

We were asked to create an apartment which was full of character and personality. I really just designed this penthouse as if it were my own; the only way I know how to design honestly. To me, the dream home is comfortable, interesting, calm and peaceful, rich in texture and story, lighthearted and soft so hopefully that is what Plimsoll is. I like to use very simple and pure fabrics such as wool, mohair, cotton, linen and felt as I think they are so inherently beautiful that they do all the hard work without necessarily

the need for too much print and frivolity. With a newer building like this one, it’s important not to compete too much with the view which in this case is very powerful and strong.

A bespoke blackened steel and Italian ‘Paonazzo’ marble dining table; the marble is intensionally split in an irregular and off centre way in order to interrupt the veining and make you take a closer look.

WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING AND REWARDING WITH THE FINAL DESIGN?

A geometric, monochromatic, bespoke rug based on a piece of art by Brazilian artist Lygia Pape.

Some of the most successful elements of the project are: A beautiful pair of Arrow pendant lights from our favourite lighting supplier Apparatus Studio, based in NY. We are a bit Apparatus obsessed, everything they design is so stunning and has a very elegant impact on its surroundings.

A large charcoal and brass bookcase with an Aboriginal piece of art on a sliding track to conceal the TV; the concept for the materiality was inspired by the great Italian architect Carlos Scarpa. Hand blown glass pendant lights from Derbyshire based

company Curiousa & Curiousa in a smokey taupe colour with brass chains. An incredible Cloud wallpaper installation in one of the bedrooms - to encourage big dreams. A photography based art collection including some birds with attitude by Leila Jeffreys, Purdy Hicks Gallery and a few pieces from Jon Tonks’ photography series Empire. Some valuable mid-century Danish antiques, reconditioned and reupholstered to sit comfortably in our modern aesthetic. WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE YOU RECEIVED WHEN IT CAME TO INTERIOR DESIGN?

I feel I have been very lucky and worked with many people in my career who have taught me invaluable lessons. My mentor and most trusted advisor Colin told me, when I was just starting out, that I need to learn French, become a CAD pro and go to Parsons in NY: he couldn’t have been more right and I have tried my best to do as he said, though my French is pretty elementary still!

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE INSIDER TIPS WHEN PLANNING TO DECORATE A ROOM?

1. Start by imaging the space in your mind as an empty volume; then begin layering in the pieces you know you love and what to use, as soon as you do this, the story starts to unfold. 2. Limit yourself by understanding what you don’t like and what you don’t want. Follow your gut reactions and trust your instincts, particularly when it comes to the colours you like because you need to have a connection to them 3. Don’t follow fads and trends too closely. Things change very quickly and you don’t want to be stuck with things that feel dated a few years later. 4. Be authentic and try not to imitate or reproduce. There are of course things which we see that inspire us but it’s important to be respectful of designs, especially in the realm of furniture and lighting. Don’t buy copies or reproductions of classics, instead find an original by a new young talent or a design graduate and support the the designs of the future instead.

5. Surround yourself with beautiful things and items I worked for an incredible that you love. Design should designer called Victoria Fairfax enhance our lives and exist as at the start of my career who a framework for our lives - it taught me a lot about colour, she should make you feel good and had an incredible, very sensitive happy. eye for colour and a very sophisticated palette she worked within.

The flowering cherry trees in the mature garden clinched the deal for Gabriela and Johan Eriksson. They decided right at the first screening that the house was just right for them. Gabriela's interest in interior decorating was awakened by the move. She loved the challenge of being able to start from scratch and redecorate everything to her taste. "My husband has given me full control when it comes to decorating the interior, or at least the little things," she laughs. "Actually, I love colour, but right now I think most of the house is in neutral shades. I have gladly opted for white, grey, beige and neutral colours often found in New England. I have tried to work more with materials, texture and design. I have a weak spot for industrial style and like to mix old and new furnishings. Our furniture is a mix between old things we brought with us from our previous home and things we bought for this house. We have also built some furniture and of course, we hunted for vintage design at flea markets and auctions." To avoid the clutter in the hall they installed a walk-in closet.
