ith the smell of freshly cut grass, long hazy evenings and sipping wine on the decking, we all know summer is here. I love the long days and the light that fills my home. It is when I get most inspired to re-decorate my house or find the energy to tackle that job that has been put off all winter. To get your inspiration going this season we have compiled two extensive Lookbooks. One on luxury living ideas for your living room and the other on outdoor living including how to bring the outdoors in. If that was not enough we have a wonderful shoot from an ideal holiday home in Norway and designer tips from Linda Levene Design Director of LLI Design. It is always our pleasure to bring each issue to you, so we hope you can sit back and enjoy!

MARGO SELBY DELIGHT We are currently having a love affair with textile design company Margo Selby. They produce exceptional quality fabrics, rugs and accessories, which blend effortlessly with both contemporary and classic interiors. The design contrasts matte and shiny textures and features a small pinstripe detail inspired by stripes used in traditional shirting designs. From www.margoselby.com

OFFICE MAKEOVER WITH IKEA When ROCO’s editorial team decided to move offices it made perfect sense for us to partner with IKEA Belfast in the design and fitting out of our new working space. Situated in a Georgian listed barn loft, the renovated area provided the perfect backdrop to create an inspiring office for the team. The architecture already lent itself perfectly to ROCO’s aesthetic with its sash windows, white washed brick and vaulted ceilings with beams.

THREE SEAT SOFA IKEA STOCKHOLM

ISSUE No 13
When we met with the inhouse design team at IKEA we had a clear brief for the office. It had to be open plan with three distinct zones: working, meeting and relaxing areas. It was important for us to keep the majority of the furniture white, as every day we deal with hundreds of colourful images and therefore a neutral space is key. To help us visualize the design, the IKEA team planned out the furniture using IKEA’s online office planner.
came to choosing furniture we decided to think outside of the box and use items not normally associated with an office. For example we used the STOCKHOLM TV bench in walnut veneer as our stationary cupboard. It was the perfect height to sit underneath the sash windows and the shelving worked for storing all our letterheads. The walnut veneer also brought in added warmth and subtly broke up the white furniture.
Here at ROCO we always like to be imaginative when designing spaces, so when it

table is the round extendable INGRATORP dining table. This showcases the diversity of IKEA’s ranges and flexibility of its uses. We designed a white sideboard using BESTÅ shelve units and added a glass top also from IKEA. This sat beautifully underneath an antique mirror, showcasing a mix of old and new. For the rest area we already had a Maurizio Bonfanti painting and a large wooden pendant lighting from Hood & Co. We wanted to incorporate these into the design whilst keeping to the ROCO colours. We absolutely

adored the luxurious black velvet STOCKHOLM threeseat sofa and this provided the perfect focal point for the rest area. Coupled with the HEMNES and VITTSJÖ coffee tables we where able to create a quite, restful and relaxing space. Once we had designed the whole space including choosing stationary such as KASSETT magazine files, we decided to use IKEA’s picking service for £15.00. Not only is this a fantastic service for saving time but it also meant we could relax and enjoy a coffee whilst our order was being prepared. The delight in watching a blank box come to life with fantastic results was all down to the dedication and fantastic service we received from IKEA. We couldn’t rate their service higher. LLI DESIGN BURRERTON PROJECT
INTERIOR DESIGN QUARTERLY
WHAT WAS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR CAREER IN INTERIORS?
My design career began as a fashion and textile designer, moving into interiors was natural progression. I have always believed that good design changes people’s lives for the better, whether it is a great outfit or a calming room. I believe design is empowering and designing dream homes for my clients is what what makes my work exciting and dynamic for me. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO CLIENTS?
We deliberately set out not to have a house style. At LLI Design we design and create interiors for each client as an individual - be it classical, contemporary or cutting edge. Everyone is individual, as is every design solution and we work hard to bring out the client’s personality in every scheme. At the beginning of a new project we spend a great deal of time getting to know the client, their lifestyle and their aspirations for the scheme in order to develop the desired aesthetic. Whilst we work on a project all our energy and concentration is on that client and their scheme.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN?
Good design will always endure, good design isn’t about gimmicks or fads so my design heros are as relevant today as they were in their heyday.

WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING AND REWARDING WITH THE FINAL DESIGN ?
The key to the overall success of the project was in changing the whole dynamic of the spaces and re-thinking and re-imagining how the family would use their home. By creating a new layout, flow and design aesthetic throughout, including new decor, lighting, finishes, fixtures and fittings; the whole atmosphere has been transformed. The central living space has been enlarged by combining 2 rooms and

installing a statement glass and lacquer kitchen featuring a substantial island and a wide range of state of the art appliances. By changing the dynamics of the spaces involved and rethinking how the family wanted to use their home, LLI Design have not only maximised the available space, but created an uplifting and comfortable environment which the owners can proudly display to their guests. The project recently received a Highly Commended award for
the Interior Design Private Residence, South East, UK category in the International Property Awards - in association with Gaggenau & Rolls Royce Motor Cars. WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE YOU RECEIVED WHEN IT CAME TO INTERIOR DESIGN ?
I would say that you should not be constrained by design rules Rules and conventions are there to be broken and the results can be astonishing if you take the risk. Always be true to yourself and follow your instincts - if you believe it’s right for a scheme, go for it - compromise always leads to disappointment.

LINDA'S TOP FIVE INSIDER DECORATING TIPS
1. Try and think in 3 dimensions - consider the relative heights of the various objects you have in the room and vary them. If you have tall ceilings make sure you have some tall pieces of furniture or artwork at an appropriate level on a wall to draw the eye. Layering is the key to success, be it heights, textures, colours or materials, keeping the eye interested is what makes a design work. 2. Lighting is fundamental to creating the right atmosphere - avoid the runway effect of 2 rows of downlights down the centre of the room, this only lights the floor and pulls theceiling down. 3. Illuminate pictures and objects with directed lighting and use floor and table lamps to add layered lighting to a room.
ISSUE No 13
Angeling directional downlights towards windows, will give the effect of pushing the walls out. 4. If you have big windows consider some external lighting - it will make the room seem so much bigger at night, drawing the eye out into the garden / terrace, so much nicer than looking at a black rectangle. 5. Wallpapers can make a big difference, painted walls tend to be flat and cold. Even a subtle textured wallpaper can add a layer of warmth and interest. . ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO MENTION?
Enjoy the process, take your time and don’t rush. Give yourself time for your design to evolve and don’t start work until you’re completely happy, its always better to make mistakes on paper.

For the Solheim family, the famous Bygdøy peninsula has become the site of their dreams and their own historic dream house. Their family home is not only a stunningly beautiful house, but also a house with an exciting and historic past. Bygdøy once belonged to the Cistercian monastery Hovedøya, built in the 1100s, but Håkon Magnusson bought the peninsula and gave it to Queen Eufemia in the 13th century. The Bygdøy Peninsula is now one of Oslo's most popular destinations. Although only minutes from central Oslo, it still maintains its rural character. The royal family has a summer home there and many of Oslo's wellto-do residents maintain holiday homes in the area. The Solheim family villa dates from the early 1900s and is one of the peninsula's most beautiful historic houses. The early 20th century was the heyday of the area. The white house was built in a former apple orchard on Huk Aveny 17 and was one of the first buildings to grace the now famous avenue.

the inner Oslo Fjord to the east and south. The couple's three children are close to schools, sports facilities and there are shops and a large recreation area nearby. The house is a listed building in art deco style. Although modernized often, the original style has never been compromised. The family who built the house lived in Florida during the winter and spent their summers in Norway. The America suitcases were still in the house and are now part of the interior décor. The phone in the hallway is the original phone installed when the century was still young. The couple refurbished the house little by little. "An old house always needs a little refurbishment, " says Merethe. "The building was in good condition but with many very bright colours. Merethe chose to keep all the old items, but with a unifying theme throughout and light colours on walls and ceilings.
67 This year the focus of Merethe and Julius' efforts has been the exterior: terrace, winter garden and entrances. They consulted an architect and researched old drawings to determine where the doors originally stood. They had them reproduced by a local carpenter. They moved the flagpole and planted an area full of lovely hydrangeas. The magnificent cobblestone path meanders through the lawn and leads into the garden behind the house. The newly renovated entrance is through the garden where the family loves to enjoy breakfast in the summer. That side of the house has two beautiful terraces with stairs leading down to the garden. One terrace is covered and is especially beautiful with the massive old columns. The conservatory was also renovated this year and can be used all year round.

Following on from the success of the Pebble coffee table, there is now a pouf, which is taller and narrower than its sibling and also serves as a seat. Just like the coffee table had before it, the Pebble pouf stands out for its soft shapes, like those of pebbles which have been smoothed and honed by the sea, which is where Matthias Demacker drew his inspiration for this project. The openings in the frame have both a styling and a practical function, since the body of the pouf itself can house books, magazines or other everyday items. The Pebble Pouf is made of polyethylene.
