RODBOROUGH TRIUMPHS AMERICAN CLASSIC

WITH

Damon Runyon's short stories on which 'Guys and Dolls' are based, although still in print are little-read, which is a great pity.

These stories, written entirely using the present tense, produce wonderful individual and lovable characters, if far away from the heartless reality of the 1930's Bronx background which they portray.

It is these strongly-drawn characters which are the real joy of Loesser's work, widely regarded as one of the finest musicals ever produced, and the strong Rodborough cast realised the fact that had been given licence to recreate these brilliant over-the-top creations. Unfettered by ideas from the previous movie portrayal, it was a joy to see characters such as Will Johnson's Harry the Horse and Tom Rathbone's Nicely-Nicely. Max Hayes, meanwhile, gave Nathan a grubby nervousness which was a delight to watch. Chris Ford, as Sky, had the suave urbanity which the part demanded.

The music is not easy (in fact 'My Time of Day' is practically impossible for all but a highly-trained voice) but the cast acquitted themselves with great credit. If you wish to know the progress which has been made with this company, you need look no further than the excellent male chorus work in 'Luck be a Lady' – the quality of which would have been unthinkable even five years ago.

The two female leads are crucial to the success of any production of this play: Loesser allows them to develop along their own lines, until the audience are dying to see them on stage together. Kate Amy as Sarah had just the right, demure demeanour, but then was able, her inhibitions released by Bacardi, to produce the show-stopping 'If I Were a Bell'. Wonderful!

Francesca Davies brought a fine degree of subtlety to the part of Adelaide. Too often played solely to make the audience laugh at her stupidity, this portrayal was more subtle, and one sensed that a future marriage between her and Nathan would have a good chance of success.

As usual with Rodborough productions, the set, costumes and general production values were nothing short of outstanding.

In addition, the choreography and the Band were excellent and the whole production proved that if you set your sights high, then success is even more prized.

Jordan enjoys YES!

Reporter Miss Spencer Jordan, 9GHS, had a great time when he attended Farnham Fire Service‟s Youth Engagement Scheme (YES).

He was very lucky to be given a place on the course, which is designed to encourage citizenship skills by such hands-on exercises as: Hose Running Use of Water Jets Ladder Work Breathing Apparatus Exercises Road Traffic Collision Procedures First Aid

As a result of the programme it is hoped that graduates will: Gain leadership skills Work co-operatively in a team Increase their selfesteem and confidence Be responsible Think before they act Respect others Improve learning and performance Jordan had a fantastic week and was a real star. School Council

Reporter Tim Feasey 7PGW A few weeks ago we had our School Council elections. Each form elected one representative to take all our ideas on what we could improve in the school today.

Each candidate had two minutes to tell the class why to vote for them. When going for the School Council it can be very hard to get up and say what you want to do and why you should be the representative, but everybody managed.

7CD‟s representative is Joss Eyton Jones 7KB‟s representatives are Olivia McKeand and Benjamin Murphy 7CG‟s representative is Eleanor Swanton 7LE‟s representative is Ben Sheppard 7PGW‟s representative is Tim Feasey 7GM‟s representative is Jai Crinnal These people did very well to get chosen.

The School Council meet every half term to discuses what we need to improve within the school.

Joss, Olivia & Ben, Jai, Eleanor, Ben and Tim will work to put Year 7‟s ideas for a safer, better school together with the ideas from Years 8, 9, 10 and 11.

Together we can make a difference!

A big "Thank You" to all the parents, pupils and staff who kindly brought in Easter eggs for our Easter Egg Raffle at the end of the Spring Term. Between you, you donated a fabulous 113 chocolate prizes and we made £179.70 in ticket sales. All proceeds from the Raffle have been donated to Water Aid.

Readathon

Reporter Miss Kemp Thank you and well done to all our Year 7 and Year 8 students who took part in this year‟s Readathon! Overall, our school raised £1,252.11 for two very worthy charities: CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children and The Roald Dahl Foundation.

The Year 7 tutor group which raised the most money for charity was 7CG, with an impressive £267.01, whilst the tutor group with the greatest student participation was 7KB - 20 students were involved, raising a fantastic total of £247.36!

Three Year 7 students managed to raise particularly impressive amounts and deserve a special mention: Tom Davies, 7KB: £41.00 Eden Allen, 7CG: £47.00 Harry Davies, 7CG: £63.00 Similarly, Zack Lawrence of 8LM managed to raise £47.00 for Readathon!

Once again, thank you to everyone involved; you have set an extremely high standard and we hope you will take part again next year.

New Garden for „Tulips‟

You may have noticed the decorative building which houses Tulips Day Nursery, situated on our front lawn. Tulips is a day nursery for under 5s, open 51 weeks a year from 7.30am to 6.00pm.

Saturday 10 July saw the opening of their new garden.

What a delightful sight to see young children happily playing amongst a pristine setting of grass, bouncy pathways and flowers on a sunny summer morning.

Homemade cakes and soft drinks were on sale, together with stalls offering toys and jewellery, and plenty of activities for the children to enjoy. The garden was officially opened at 11.30am by the Mayor of Waverley, Cllr Carole Cockburn.

Teacher for the day

Wednesday 7th July, a small group of Year 10 pupils spent the day at St James' primary to assist in the running of their International Day. The morning saw our Year 10s teaching basic German to Year 6 pupils using their own resources and reward system, running a European languages quiz and then a French bingo competition, which went down a treat.

After lunch, Rodborough pupils spent time in Years 2 and 3, listening to readers, coaching hand-writing and helping with an art project, as well as making foreign language signs and labels, which are now stuck up around St James' site to encourage the use and learning of French and German. Lastly, the pupils got creative by making a selection of banners and props to be used in the St James' end of Year school production.

The day was enjoyed by all. It was a lovely opportunity for our pupils to take the lead in their own very well planned lessons and for the Year 6 pupils, in particular, to get to know some friendly faces before they start at Rodborough in September.

Year 9 Rodborough Open Golf Tournament

Reporter Mrs Lewis The weather thankfully held up for this years „Rodborough Open‟ at Broadwater Golf Course where 35 Year 9 pupils took part in the first ever „Rodborough Open‟, during activities week.

Some already experienced, and quite talented, young golfers joined forces with others new to golf - eager to „try their hand‟ on the driving range, putting green and golf course. All pupils received both group and individual coaching from Broadwater‟s very own professional, Nick English, before setting off for their afternoon competition round.

The competition saw a 3-way tie for 1st place between Matthew McConnell, Oliver Whiteman and Sean Burton, with Samuel Gravestock coming in 4th with a score of -6. The play-off is likely to be fierce and hotly contested. May the best player win!

Unfortunately, this year‟s event didn‟t see many girls taking part. We throw the gauntlet out now to girls in next year‟s Year 9 – are you brave and daring enough to give the boys a run for their money next year? Congratulations to Josie Canon, winner of „Best Girl Golfer, 2010‟.

Who will be next?

All our current Year 7 pupils have embarked on a new reading scheme, Accelerated Reader (AR). Harry will tell you all about it: For Accelerated Reader, you start by taking an easy online reading test, which asks you to fill in the blanks in sentences. When you have finished the online test, a teacher tells you your ZPD (the range of books that are at the right level for you). You then get coloured stickers to put in your planner to remind you which colour books are in your ZPD. Then it is time for you to choose a book that matches one of the stickers in your planner (so is in your ZPD).

Once you have read the book it is time to log on and take a quiz. This quiz asks you questions about the book you have just read. If you get all the questions right then you have 100% and win all the points available for that book. If you get less than 100% then you win a proportion of the available points. The longer the book is, the more points it is worth. When you have completed your quiz you get a TOPS certificate to tell you your percentage and the number of points you have won. The TOPS certificate also tells you how many words you have read in that book.

You can get prizes for all sorts of things: like getting 100%, winning a certain number of points or reading a certain number of words.

AR is a great reading scheme as it will be different for everyone, and you can choose the books that you will enjoy. It is up to us to decide when to move up to harder levels and we can choose to read long or short books depending on how we are feeling.

I was really pleased to get 100% in my first quiz (a football story by Alan Gibbons called „The Number 7 Shirt‟). I was congratulated by Mr Smith & Mrs Howick and given house points.

With the long holidays in front of us, many of you have been asking how to find books that are in the scheme. Please do come into the library and stock up on books for the holidays and remember that you can also use books from home or from public libraries. The website www.arbookfind.co.uk will show you whether there is a quiz for your book and, if there is, will tell you the level (for you to check against your ZPD in your planner). Good Luck. Carnegie Challenge 2010

Reporters Praise Gunje and Jasmine August

One morning in June, six gallant Rodborough pupils set forth in a minibus on a course for Glebelands School.

In preparation we had attempted to read the eight short-listed books: Nation by Terry Pratchet, The Graveyard Book

by Neil Gamian, Fever Crumb by Philip Reeve, Chains by Laurie Anderson, The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness, The Vanishing of Katherine Linden by Helen Grant, Rowan the Strange by Julie Hearn and Revolver by Marcus Sedgwick.

On arrival at Glebelands we made our way to their school library, where the competition was to take place. That was when we got our first glimpse of our opponents – Woolmer Hill, Glebelands and Broadwater. After a light snack, the competition began.

Our first round was a quick fire „buzzer‟ round.

We lost a lot of ground here as we weren‟t fast enough on our buzzers but we later managed to claw back some points by our immaculate interpretation of the tableau round and our descriptive explanations. Another buzzer round of quick-fire questions sent very few points our way but we redeemed ourselves through the playdough modelling and further tableaux rounds, where we were almost impossible to beat!

Sadly, there just weren‟t enough non-buzzer rounds for our team to gain the lead and Woolmer Hill were the deserved winners of the Waverley Trophy.

There is always a prize for taking part, though, and we each received an inscribed medal to commemorate the day. We also enjoyed a piece of the special „Carnegie‟ cake.

We then received word from CILIP, the National Carnegie organisers, that the winning book was The Graveyard Book

by Neil Gamain.

Thank you Mrs Howick for organising the day and Mrs Bullen, Mr Grenville and Mr Leigh for fetching and carrying us.

Green Notes

Well, what a term it has been! Eco week has proved to be as popular as ever!

The Year 7 cycling activities were well supported with over 50 students cycling to school and taking part in the various events put on through the day.

Year 8 had a good time exploring the environment of the school site whilst Year 9 enjoyed the challenge of finding and measuring footpaths on our local commons. Even the five girls who managed to get very lost and return to school at the end of lunch rather than the beginning were still smiling as they walked back!

Year 10 had a completely new experience. We decided to focus on ethical purchasing and, with the help of the Drama department and the RE department, we ran an extended assembly about fair trade. Our thanks go to Mrs Wheatley of Traidcraft who helped us with the assembly and provided a delicious fair trade chocolate bar for everyone in Year 10!

Thanks to the Technology Department, our Year 10 Technology students had a short taste of child labour themselves, when we set up our own sweat-shop business called Sweat Tech! Using Year 10s as child labour, the students were paid in jelly babies to produce beads for making jewellery which we then sold for 50 pence a piece (the money went to help Fair Trade, honest)!

This was followed by a stern announcement from Mr Smith that the school day would be extended until 6 pm each day to enable students to clean the school and wash the dishes after lunch. Mr Smith also announced that lessons would now be compulsory on Saturdays. To Mr Smith‟s credit he managed to deliver all his „announcements‟ with a straight face!

The students were not sure what to do until they realised that he was, in fact, bringing home the injustices of child labour. The point of both Mr Smith‟s announcement and our Sweat Tech business was not lost on the students. We are all lucky to live where we live and enjoy the lifestyles we do – many people across the globe are considerably less fortunate and, if by buying fairly made ethical products, we can help a bit in spreading our good luck, then we should.

Many of the Eco Week activities have been filmed by Year 9 film crews inspired by the work that they did last winter with the help of the BBC, as part of BBC News School Report. Look out for these Eco Week films on a big screen in a dining room near you soon!

Beyond Eco Week we have been busy organising a new cycling initiative for next year, focusing on getting more girl students cycling to school. A few months ago a parent, Julie Benson, undertook some detailed research into what factors put students off cycling to school. As a result of this work we are putting together some bids for funding to try and provide better storage facilities for cyclists so carrying too much gear with them becomes less of a problem and perhaps extend our existing cycle storage area.

One other exciting opportunity has emerged as a result of the Greening Godalming campaign. We hope to be able to supply classes in Year 8 with energy monitors so students can go home and test just how much electricity different appliances use in their own homes. This is an exciting way to raise awareness of how much power we are using and show us the money we are wasting leaving appliances on standby, overfilling our kettles to make a cup of tea, using electric tin openers ... you get the idea! „Till next term have a good and environmentally-friendly summer!

A „GREEN‟ RAP

So this plea comes with a ‘Please’ Let’s recycle, Save The Trees So people just like you and me Will have a lovely world to see.

Reporter Theo Puddephatt BP Young Scientists Alex Currie, Liam Cole, Elliot Thornton, Katie Becket and Phoebe McKeand and I represented Rodborough Year 9 at the BP Challenge at Sunbury on June 6.

The challenge was for each team to build a model sailing boat to conform to tight specifications and to stay within our $55budget. During our 45 minutes brainstorming time we came up with some excellent ideas. Elliot’s idea was to have bottles on each side of the hull similar to a catamaran. This would add the necessary balance and stability for the craft to sail in a straight line. One of Theo’s ideas was to fill the keel with gravel to act as ballast to prevent the craft becoming top-heavy.

We then had 90 minutes to build our boat.

We decided to split into sub teams to ensure we hit all the criteria: Alex and Theo worked on the sail, Elliot worked on the stability of the boat whilst Katie and Phoebe designed and created our logo, team name and décor. Liam was in charge of financing, mindful that keeping within budget would be critical and, with paper priced at „… would it sink or would it swim?‟ $5 per sheet, we could afford no mistakes!

After the first half an hour of building, sticking, gluing and much debate we were ready to carry out our first test.

We carefully carried our vessel to the pool and „We carried the soggy remnants waited with baited breath; would it sink or swim? back to our base in tatters …‟ The result of the first test was worrying. Our boat didn’t float and the bottles fell away from the side. We carried the soggy remnants back to our base in tatters and immediately got to work on speedy redesign, repairs, adaptations and improvements. Twenty stressful minutes later we were ready for a second test. The result: fantastic! It was perfectly balanced and floated well. Even so we were still apprehensive about how it might compare with other craft at the official testing.

We were second to test our boat on the pool. It travelled across in 3.99 seconds, which seemed to be excellent time.

We then stood by the live results screen with baited breath, watching each school’s timings as they went up. We had an unassailable speed… until St. Joseph’s launched their craft, which was recorded on the board at 3.45 seconds. We were devastated! The competition was not over yet, however, as each craft needed scrutinizing against the original build criteria such as budgeting, good teamwork and aesthetics.

With the board showing St Joseph’s in first place and Rodborough in second, we had a nerve wracking wait as points were counted and verified.

The atmosphere in the room was tense as they made the announcement in reverse order. It was impossible to know whether we had moved up or down the rankings until we were finally announced as the winning team! We were delighted. Not only had we won the trophy but also a tour around the Olympic Stadium next October. As we regrouped with Miss Winn and Miss Stirling they congratulated us on the excellent result.

We all found this a highly enjoyable, interesting and rewarding trip.

Year 8 Engineering Project

Year 8 teams were challenged to design and build wind turbines using a finite supply of resources.

The turbines needed to be attached to a strong base, and be capable of spinning as fast as possible without falling apart. Students were able to purchase items such as paper and corriflute from a store (currency technos) and would be rewarded with 100 technos for each volt of power produced by their turbine. Each team also earned technos for teamwork, meeting the speification, our verbal presentation, completion of worksheets etc.

I really enjoyed the construction project. We made a structural base that was capable of supporting 24 wooden blocks. This demonstrated the power of structural engineering and technology like this is used all around us in everyday situations.

It was amazing to see how strong rolled up paper can be. It all comes down to the way that the material is used rather than the natural strength of the material.

We needed to understand stresses and strains in order to build really strong structures. We held our structure together with nuts and bolts to ensure that our structure maintained structural integrity.

We also made a wind turbine from wood and plastic. We mounted our plastic propellers onto a wooden shaft in such a way that the wind (from a fan) would cause them to rotate. The more „wind‟ produced by the fan, the faster our turbine rotated. All our materials for the build had to be „purchased‟, so we couldn‟t afford to waste a single thing.

Speeds were recorded by computer.

We managed to keep our construction costs under budget.

Different teams had different design solutions – some of which were more successful than others.

When our turbine was tested it was found to be very efficient, „earning‟ us more technos than we had started with. This showed that our engineering design was really good.

A Long Day in France

Reporter Tom Berrill Quotations from Holly Parrott and Tonicha Gaskell-Pluck We arrived at school at about 5:15 am, tired but raring to go. The coach journey seemed to go on forever but after about 50 circles of our favourite i-pod playlists we arrived at the Euro-tunnel station in Folkestone where we stopped for breakfast before then the driver parked up inside the enormous train.

The journey was about 35 minutes but felt a lot longer.

We exited the train and journeyed for 40 minutes to a seaside town called Le Touquet where our first activity began.

… It was a fantastic day that I‟ll never forget!

We split into groups to explore the town whilst we completed some pages in our booklets and bought postcards, which we later wrote home to our parents (in French).

After a quick packed lunch we hopped back in the coach drove to the Nausicaä Aquarium at Boulogne. The aquarium was huge! From jellyfish to crocodiles and sharks to sea lions. I couldn‟t think of any sealife that wasn‟t there! There were underwater observatories for the sharks and the sea lions which was amazing as it brought you so close!

After a short spell in the souvenir shop we set off for Cité Europe – a massive shopping mall and supermarket.

Each group were given €15-€20 to buy a French dinner which for some groups included: baguette, brioche, brie, crème caramel and much more. The coach journey home was surprisingly fun; the comfy recliner seats and the Mr. Bean movie made up for Freddie‟s awful singing!

It was a fantastic day that I‟ll never forget.

Imperial War Museum

Reporters Megan Hurley, Lizzie Rose & Katie Fifield During Activities Week we were lucky enough to visit the Imperial War Museum in London. When we arrived we started by heading to the First World War exhibition.

Here, we learnt about some important dates, such as Germany‟s declaration of war on Serbia 28 June 1914 and Britain‟s declaration of war in August 1914. After learning about Kitchener‟s recruiting tactics and propaganda posters we started to study the trenches. We saw how different soldiers kept different possessions, such as chocolate, tobacco and Christmas cards to remind them of home and to give them hope.

“There were lots of interactive activities…”

Our next activity, the Horrible History Trench Exhibition, was an experience we‟ll never forget! There were lots of interesting facts to learn and interactive activities! We were allowed to try on the uniforms that the soldiers used to wear and played „Splat the Rat‟ – a game that would have been played with real rats! Other activities included detecting different types of gasses used in World War 1 and seeing how the different sizes of bombs affected the explosions.

In the afternoon we wandered through the large exhibits gallery and saw all of the huge machines and vehicles that were used in the wars. These included a London Bus that had been modified for use in Ypres and tanks from both World Wars, as well as the much smaller American Jeep.

To end the day we visited the gift shop where we were able to buy „rationed sweets‟!

Overall, we really loved this trip and would definitely return! mmm . . . humbugs!

Pan Disability at Guildford Saints Football Club

Funded by a £5,000 grant from the Football Association, Guildford Saints have started a Pan Disability Football Club for 7-16 year olds registered disabled or with a special educational need.

Keen footballer Owen (8LM) is a valued member of the team and plays regularly against other local Pan Disability teams.

Activities Week 2010 The break in hot sunny weather did nothing to tarnish the experiences for us all during Activities Week this year. Months of careful planning for this logistical nightmare paid off as over 700 pupils and 100 staff were sent off on different activities all over the South of England. Despite road closures and last-minute sickness, all activities took place as planned and everyone has had a brilliant week!

Year 10 Business Week

Casual visitors to Rodborough last Tuesday could be forgiven for thinking that Rodborough was the venue for an important business symposium!

Year 10 students, in anticipation of a busy day of business simulation, all arrived wearing „business attire‟ – and didn‟t they look the part!

Be-suited men and women, like young apprentice candidates, gathered in the main hall to join members of our local business communities and to await instructions. It was not always easy to work out which were our students, or which were our business helpers!

In no time at all our business men and women had been organised by Mrs Scholey into 18 manufacturing companies. Each company had to use the talents of its team members to make the best possible profit from their £10 start-up fund. Managing Directors had to motivate their buyers, sales executives, accountants, design consultants, quality controllers and workforce to work together to strike the best deals, produce the best products and manage the finances to best effect.

The energy levels rose to record levels as each company worked as well as they could to out-perform their rivals.

At the end of the day prizes were awarded in two categories: most profitable company and best presentation.

Leaversâ€&#x; Prom 2010

The Year 11 Prom was held on a fine June evening at the Lythe Hill Hotel, Haslemere, the first time we had used a venue other than Rodborough. It was our biggest ever Prom with more than 170 pupils attending for the disco and buffet in these great surroundings. Lythe Hill was a fantastic venue and all our leavers looked and acted the part – it was a huge success, with our young people doing us proud.

Mayor‟s Youth Challenge

A record nineteen teams of four pupils and seven supervising staff attended this year‟s Mayor‟s Youth Challenge at the Army School of Physical Training in Aldershot on Saturday 8 May. The day was cold and windy, with a hint of rain, but this did not deter our teams or the Army from having a great day. The competitors ranged from Years 7 to 11 and all our teams took part in a way that did the school proud – extremely competitive but displaying excellent sportsmanship.

A huge number of different challenges faced our teams. A vigorous warm up was followed by the testing of speed and agility in relay races of all descriptions, stamina and strength in the staggeringly well-equipped gym, skill and agility in a number of imaginative activities in the indoor arena and outdoor area, and grit and determination in the assault course. A huge amount of team work, commitment and effort were displayed in all areas.

All our competitors came away with a medal and t-shirt. There were individual awards given to Paul Jackson, Reuben Puddephatt, Emily Kimber, Lydia Sewell and Jessica Webb for outstanding effort.

Congratulations to Team 3: Michael Cheesman, Tom Archer, Jay Nicoll and Finn Bundy who came away with a third place in the older age group.

Cllr John Sandy, who invented the Challenge eleven years ago when he was Mayor, and David Gill, Sport and Community Development Manager at Waverley Borough Council, attended follow-up assemblies later in the term where Team 3 were presented with their shields. Cllr Sandy explained that, eleven years after its inception, he had devised “The John Sandy Award”, to be presented annually to recognise outstanding support for the event. Rodborough proudly received the award for our support for the Mayor‟s Youth Challenge every year. A further trophy was presented to Mrs Ward for organising and supporting our teams during this period.

If you would like to take part in next year‟s Mayor‟s Youth Challenge, keep an eye out for the posters in the late Spring and early Summer 2011. We would love to see you there next year.

After a dominant start to the season the Year 9 rugby team was determined to continue our excellent form.

We dominated the remaining of our pool games beating George Abbot and St. Peter‟s. Strong performances included Matt Wythe, Robbie Campbell and George Dukes (even though he changed sides during one game)!

We then progressed to the quarter finals. Our opposition, Weydon, were new to the tournament. This new side were no match for us, allowing us to score over 40 points.

Notable performances included: Charlie Butterworth, Will Powell, Tom Rathbone, James Ward, Matt McConnell and Liam Cole.

It was Semi-Final time. Our opposers were Alexandra & Albert School, more newcomers to the competition. Newcomers or not, Alexandra & Albert were no walkover team. The game was very tough, seeing Alexandra & Albert scoring first but missing their conversion. We soon capitalised on their disappointment with a Max Onabanjo try to bring the score to 7-5 in our favour. We fought on into the second half defending our line and it was with relief that we made it to our third final in three years. Excellent performances included Joe Ferguson, Sean Burton, Harry Barney, Ollie Whiteman, Max Onabanjo, Alex Kiddier and George Tomes.

Next it was the big one. The final. To be played at Imber Court against Sunbury Manor. They opened by scoring a good try from their number eight. Unfazed, we equalised. At half-time the scores were even. In the second half tension rose when Hugh Brashaw charged down a clearance kick and was awarded a penalty try as his shirt had been pulled to prevent him scoring. In his haste, however, the conversion missed. Sunbury Manor seized their opportunity to get back in the game, scoring two strong tries to take the championship.

Even though we lost our final match, it was still a great achievement to get through to the final. Thanks very much to Mr. Lee, who came out to train us whatever the weather. The whole team looks forward to returning next year to reclaim the trophy that we came so close to this year.

Reporter Mrs Fjord-Roberts Kneeboarding Treat for Year 8 “I thought it was going to be really hard and I would give up – but it was mental – I loved it!”

In May 2010 Mrs Fjord-Roberts decided to reward a few pupils in Year 8 by offering the opportunity to take part in an exciting trip to Prince‟s Club in Bedfont, Middlesex to try the “extreme” sport of Kneeboarding. Whilst not the most extreme of water sports, the outfits, the place and the people involved made it feel extreme!

The 12 pupils were selected from those who had maintained the highest Attitude to Learning grades in Year 8 over two terms - something I believe should be rewarded (I would have loved to have taken an even larger group had numbers allowed).

Despite the sunshine all day the evening was far from warm.

The activity involved our pupils being pulled around a lake by a cable. Inevitably, they would soon fall off and were destined to spend a great deal of time swimming, walking, and laughing during their 6pm to 8pm session.

“When can we come again?”

This was not the first group of students that I have taken knee boarding. Miss Shephard and I have previously taken some Year 11s and was, therefore, prepared for our Year 8s, bedraggled and cold – to be ready to give up early. But no – not Year 8! Made of sterner stuff, they were „extreme‟ in their own special way; clinging to the cable time after time and laughing, screaming and cheering one another along - right up to our 8 o‟clock end time. There was no stopping many of these intrepid individuals – notably Alex Harvey who, without his glasses, could barely see what was in front of him! Annie Simons, Katie Baxter and Elizabeth Rose all held on for dear life, despite wrinkled fingers and blue lips! The Copp twins did their best to out-do one “Awesome, Miss!” another in a contest to remain upright for the longest. A

huge amount of fun was had by one and all- including Miss Shephard, who still cannot get past the second corner! Well done to all who came – you were ambassadors for your Year Group and for Rodborough.

We look forward to going again next year!

Waverley & Ash Games

Reporter Mrs Beale The 2010 Waverley and Ash Games took place at Woolmer Hill School and the Herons Leisure Centre in Haslemere. This year‟s events included Year 7 Basketball, Year 8 Mixed Hockey, Year 9 Water-polo and Year 10 Volleyball and culminated in a Relay as a finale.

Rodborough were selected to organise the opening ceremony.

The two acts chosen were an amazing Gym and Dance display performed by Georgie Major, Holly Phipps, Helena Sharp and Portia Nunn, and an awesome Street Dance performance by Jordan Beardsall and Connor Owen.

Rodborough competed well in all events on the day, working hard to achieve goals and points for the school within their activity. After many matches played against all the schools in the partnership, Rodborough came out on top in Waterpolo, Hockey and the girls‟ relay.

Over all, Team Rodborough 2010 came second. Well done to all the students involved.

Year 7 Rounders

Rounders has been extremely popular with Year 7s this summer as over 40 students have attended practice every week. Their teams have played a number of matches against local schools.

They successfully beat Kings College, Broadwater and Woolmer Hill schools. Rodborough was the only school to enter two teams into the Year 7 tournament. We managed to beat Broadwater and came close with only one rounder in it against Glebelands and Woolmer Hill. A brilliant effort by all the players. The title „Girl of the Tournament‟ has to go to Sophie Richardson who managed to score five rounders on her own in one of the matches!

Well done, girls and good luck next year.

Year 9 Rounders

Reporter Mrs Beale Our regular girls have been out to practice and have competed for their Year Group. Year 9s have been successful this year beating Woolmer Hill, Kings College and Broadwater schools. The effort from the girls in the tournament was excellent, rewarding them with 2nd place over all. The most consistent girls this term have been Amber Walker and Gertie Pethebridge.

Year 10 Rounders

Reporter Miss Shephard The Year 10 Rounders team have held the District Rounders Champions title for the last three years. This year they too (like our Year 8s) faced St Peter‟s in the final. (In previous years their final adversary has been George Abbot.)

Frankie and Venetia could have been a little distracted from the game with the opening night of Guys and Dolls only hours away but, professionals that they are, they remained unfazed.

The Year 10 team, captained by Amy Chalcraft, read the game brilliantly and showed excellent communication on the pitch, adjusting their fielding according to the skills of the opposition batter. Rodborough scored well in the first innings taking the lead. They fielded extremely well in the second innings leaving them just 3 rounders needed to win the game. The girls took the game comfortably and retained their District Rounders Champions title for the fourth year.

The Championship team comprised: Amy Chalcraft (captain), Annabelle Ford, Frankie Davis, Venetia Cook, Hollie Cosslett, Anna Millar, Rachel Singleton, Ellen Macnally, Jo Curtis, and Amy Fifield.

Year 8 District Champions!

Reporter Miss Shephard The Year 8 Rounders team played well in the Waverley Tournament managing to win their passage to the District Final. It wasn‟t plain sailing, however, as they had a very close match v Broadwater, demonstrating some excellent hitting in the second innings to put them ahead. They then faced St Peter‟s, who stole last years title by half a rounder, in the final.

Rodborough‟s first innings was a solid one putting them 2½ rounders ahead. The second innings batting wasn‟t so strong, with St Peter‟s fielders doing well to get Rodborough out with 12 balls remaining. Rodborough would have to match St Peter‟s excellent fielding if they were to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Tension was high at the end of the innings with scores drawn taking the game into extra time.

The game would be decided by every player taking one bat each. Rodborough won the toss deciding to field first. Their fielding was strong only allowing St Peter‟s to score 3½.

We were then in to bat and the tension intensified as, with only one member left to bat, we had scored 3. Needing one rounder to win the match or half a rounder to draw, Hannah D-L was under enormous pressure! She stepped up and hit the ball hard then ran as fast as her legs could take her - right round all the posts for a rounder!

Rodborough had won the game by a half and were now District Tournament Champions!

A Sad Goodbye to „Team 2010‟

The Year 11 Girls‟ Rounders team, „Team 2010‟, represented Rodborough for their final time at the District Tournament; the girls have been champions for the last two years and wanted to finish on a high. During the event they defeated Glebelands and Guildford County with ease and then came Broadwater – the deciding match.

Rodborough batted first. A Broadwater fielder had caught out three of our players leaving Katherine Sharpe as Rodborough‟s final batter; she managed to score a rounder and a half, finishing the innings with 7 rounders. Broadwater are a very strong side so Rodborough‟s fielding needed to be tight. With three balls remaining, scores were drawn and Rodborough couldn‟t let the opposition achieve any more rounders.

The Broadwater batter made good contact and was on her way to score a half thus taking the game. However, Rodborough fielded the ball, throwing it to second; unfortunately, it wasn‟t enough and Broadwater took the game 8-7.

Earlier in the year, the Netball girls lost their District Tournament Title to George Abbot, in a close game with a single goal difference. An opportunity to face them again and move closer to winning the league title came in the semi final. Both teams are very strong and the game was highly competitive. Rodborough‟s defence was incredible, winning the ball back time and time again but, unfortunately, this couldn‟t be converted into goals due to increasing pressure on the shooters and some good defence by the opposition. After 40 minutes of netball, scores were drawn, 14 all. After 10 minutes of extra time the scores were still drawn and the game came down to a golden goal.

Rodborough gained possession and made it into the shooting circle but missed. Rodborough‟s defence won the ball back in George Abbot‟s end third, passed it back and this time scored, bringing a sigh of relief to the parents supporting on the side line and to all of the team.

The dedicated team returned to school during study leave to play the final against Glebelands.

They played some excellent netball, and won 30-6.

Team 2010 will remain on Rodborough‟s wall of fame for years to come. They are talented sports women with excellent attitudes during their matches. Their resume includes: Netball District league and tournament winners Rounders district league winners U16 District football champions Athletic District Winners They also lent their hand to other sports, including Basketball, where they came runners up in the District Tournament. Their excellence, however, doesn‟t stop with performance. They are exceptional leaders too. They have all played vital roles across the school as Sports Leaders, PE prefects and Senior 6 members. They are the definition of role models and they will be sorely missed next year and in years to come.

Girls‟ Football U16 Champions

Girls‟ football was established at Rodborough four years ago. Over this time the teams have enjoyed increasing success and this year they reached the District U16 Final, against Broadwater.

The game was held at Godalming Town stadium in front of a good size crowd.

The game was set to be tight as the previous time the teams met the final score was a goal-less draw. During the first half, Rodborough had the majority of the possession, with several chances just inches from the goal; neither team had scored by half time. Broadwater were strongest in the second half but some strong defence and excellent challenges from Venetia Cook prevented them scoring.

With minutes left, a well aimed Broadwater shot bounced over keeper Amber Walker‟s head and handed Broadwater the lead. Rodborough‟s response showed great character - they didn‟t give up and pushed forward, searching for a goal to draw the game.

With seconds left on the clock, Amy Chalcraft played over the top to Frankie Davis who aimed the ball past the keeper and into the goal, taking the game into extra time 1-1.

In the second half of extra time Frankie took the ball into the area where she was fouled and awarded a penalty. Amy Chalcraft stepped up and fired the ball, striking the cross bar, rebounding off the keeper into the goal, putting Rodborough 2-1 in front.

Rodborough held out with some more excellent defence for the remainder of the extra time to win the game 2-1 and claim Rodborough‟s first Girls‟ Football District Championship title.

Year 10 District Netball League & Tournament

The Year 10 Netball girls were to face arch rivals Guildford County in the District Netball league final.

The Rodborough girls had taken the title of the district tournament away from Guildford County this year so it was set to be a highly competitive match with a lot of pride at stake. The match was close throughout, with Guildford County in front for the first two quarters by two goals.

Rodborough had a storming third quarter going into the final two goals ahead. The last quarter was tense, with the pressure getting to both teams and play became a little scrappy and a there was a struggle for possession. With only minutes remaining, Guildford County pulled ahead, winning 22-20.

Rodborough girls were obviously disappointed but should be very proud of themselves as they played with great determination and tenacity; luck just wasn‟t on their side that day. They are already setting their sights on next season.

Year 8 District Netball League & Tournament

The Year 8 Netball team have become a formidable force this season; all their hard work in training, and refining of their play in friendly games and league matches, has paid off with exceptional results.

They arrived at the District tournament as a relative unknown entity to the Guildford schools who hadn‟t played them since the previous tournament when Rodborough came third. In the 7 minute group stages they won their games 12-0, 14-0 and 7-2 showing excellent fluid netball and strong defence. They faced St Peters, winners the previous year, in the semi which was a close game; however Rodborough won 9-7.

In the final they met Guildford County; Rodborough were too strong for them and won the game, claiming the title.

The B team also did very well; there wasn‟t a B tournament so they were playing all the other schools‟ first teams. Unluckily, they had been drawn in the strongest group; they gave many of the teams a run for their money and won a couple of games to finish a respectable third.

The A team then focused on doing the double - winning the league as well. Their season goal difference was 200+ goals and they demonstrated their quality, beating Guildford County in the final 33-13. Well done, girls; you have shown that with hard work, commitment and the desire to achieve, any goal is within reach.

County Relays The first athletics event of the season took place at Guildford County school. The County Relays consisted of 6 schools within the Guildford area. These included: Rodborough, Guildford County, Glebelands, Ash Manor, George Abbot and Howard of Effingham. The races were extremely close; however, the Year 8 and 10 Rodborough girls and Year 8 Rodborough boys dominated their events helping Rodborough to a respectful third place over all. We will miss the Year 10 girls next year!

Maybe next year the students need to leave the cake eating to the teachers and parents…

Tennis Competition A mixed team of Year 8s were entered into a tennis competition within the Waverley partnership. The eight members of the team played six matches against Weydon, Broadwater and Glebelands. The mixed A team did extremely well and have managed to get through to the next stage of the tournament.

The County Finals will take place at St George‟s School, Weybridge on 15th July. The finalists include: Hannah Drijver Ludlam, Emily Kimber, Henry Copp and Matt Shorrock. Good Luck to you all.

Playground to Podium Festivals These events, organised by Active Surrey, have taken place over the course of this term at Charterhouse School. Rodborough entered a strong team of boys including Tom Foster, Joshua Smith, Owen Morgan and Oliver Bartlett-Scott.

The festival‟s aim is to bring together young disabled people identified as showing high ability in sport in order to assess and nurture their sporting potential.

During the course of the festivals, the participants have tried out a variety of sports including athletics, table tennis, boccia (a Paralympics sport with Ancient Greek roots), swimming and the everpopular wheelchair basketball. Our boys showed exceptional sporting excellence and were selected to take part in the final festival in July.

Year 7s Promising Start

Reporter Jacob Pink 7GM Year 7‟s first cricket match together as a team got them away to a promising start as they beat Woolmer Hill, scoring 115 after some amazing innings from Alex Dyer.

They then went on to score 90 in their next match against Glebelands. Team member, Sam Brashaw commented, „We played very well in the second match but our bowling has been inconsistent.‟ These early matches bode well for the future of this team.

School Sports Co-ordinator News – Summer Term 2010

Reporter Mrs Beale Rodborough kicked off the term with an array of summer sports and competitions.

Athletics and Rounders dominated the curriculum within PE but, outside of the curriculum, Year 7s were cycling hard to achieve their Level 2 Cycling Proficiency Award. 35 Year 7 students took to the roads of Godalming, learning the safety aspects of cycling and, of course, getting fit.

All 35 cyclists passed their awards with flying colours.

Busbridge Juniors‟ Sports Day took place on Friday 25th June, 2010. Many Busbridge exstudents (now in Year 7) were selected to help on the day. These students demonstrated good leadership skills and listened attentively to instructions given.

Mr Samson from Busbridge Infants commented on the ability and helpfulness of the students: “Without a doubt Zach Wright was the star. He used his initiative and was extremely helpful and very enthusiastic. Jaz Jarman was great and helped rotate the lanes. Reuben, Millie, Olivia and Ella were proactive and Alex was great. We will see all the new Year 7s for the same again!

Primary Festivals A successful Football festival for over 100 Years 1 and 2 from all Rodborough feeder schools took place at Busbridge Infants, just in time for the World Cup to start.

St Edmund‟s pupils lead the Festival, taking on the role of coaches and Sports Leaders. The afternoon encompassed a high level of sporting excellence and talent spotters selected more than ten children to join local football clubs.

A brilliant sunny day at Rodborough was perfect for the Years 3 and 4 Rounders event.

Godalming College students and the Rodborough JSLA students worked together to co-ordinate and deliver a successful and competitive event. The standard of play was exceptional, with many of the normal Rounders rules used. Every player used a full size bat and many were achieving exceptional rounders.

The winning team pipped St Edmunds into second place by just two rounders. Well done to the Chandler A team!

National Ball Kids Finals

Reporter Mrs Serpell Will Johnson, 10RL, has been selected as one of the 30 finalists chosen from 1600 entrants in the Ball Kids National Finals for 2010. These 30 will form the Ball Kids squad for the 2010 ATP World Tennis Tour Finals in November. After selection, Will and his squad were treated to an exhibition match between Pat Cash and Mansour Bahrami.

District Sports Success

Reporter Mr Lee Rodborough athletes dominated the District Championship held at The Spectrum on Friday, 18th June. The Rodborough team won 13 of the 17 trophies, including the most coveted Champion School Shield, this year by a margin of almost 300 points.

Other silverware won includes: Year 7 boys Field, Year 8 Boys Track and Field, Year 9 Boys Track and Field, Year 10 Boys Field, Year 7 Girls Track and Field, Year 8 Girls Track, Year 9 Girls Field, and Year 10 Girls Track and Field.

Annabelle brings home the baton to smash the Rodborough 100 Relay Record

This was an amazing effort by all 140 athletes involved on the day. Particular congratulations, however, go to Annabelle Ford and the Year 10 Girls 4 x 100m relay team (Annabelle Ford, Frankie Davies, Ellen Macnally and Venetia Cook) who set new Rodborough records in the 100m and relay respectively.

County Athletes

Congratulations to the following pupils who, following district trials at Charterhouse School, were selected to compete for Waverley at the County Schools Athletics Championships at Kingsmeadow Stadium on Sat 12th June: Annabelle Ford (Intermediate Girls Triple Jump), Alex Kiddier (Junior Boys Triple Jump), Torin Davies (Junior Boys Long Jump), Oliver Pearson (Junior Boys High Jump), Tom Simons (Intermediate Boys Discus), Daniel Ferguson (Intermediate Boys Javelin), Michael Jansen (Intermediate Boys 200m).

Notable performances at Kingsmeadow came from Michael Jansen5th in the 200m final, Tom Simons - 3rd in the discus and Annabelle Ford - 2nd in the Triple Jump with a personal best of 10.57.

Annabelle was subsequently selected to represent Surrey in the Southern Counties Championships the following weekend.

Annabelle also beat the Rodborough record by a massive 27cms at the County event whilst Michael broke the Rodborough 200m record that had been in place since 1979.
