What is the LRC for?  

    

Rodborough LRC has two main roles: The large fiction section is there for you to find books to enjoy.

Rodborough LRC houses around 6,000 fiction titles, chosen specifically for you.

Please let us know if there are new titles we should buy.

The non-fiction section is there for you to find information. During your five years at Rodborough you will be taught how to find information and use it selectively and effectively.

Open sessions are for pupils brought or sent by a member of staff.

Drop in sessions are for students who wish to work or read in the LRC in their free time.

What special rules apply in the LRC?

The LRC is a special part of the school where you will often be expected to share the space with other pupils and staff from different classes and year groups. All normal school rules apply and we also expect:          

School uniform must be worn correctly AT ALL TIMES. Outdoor clothes must be taken off and put on the back of your chair.

Your bag must be tucked under the table where others cannot trip.

You must move around the LRC quietly and sensibly without drawing attention to yourself or distracting others.

You must work quietly. This means speaking in a quiet voice to those in your group.

Never call across the room. All ‘chatter’ should be about the topic being studied.

It should always be possible to hear any background music that may be playing.

Look after all resources carefully. Report any breakages.

Leave the LRC tidy. Use and return resources carefully. Tuck in your chair and clear your table before you leave. Throw all rubbish in the bin and waste paper into Abitibi.

All food must be eaten in the dining room. ASK if you need to pop outside for a drink.

Eating & drinking are not permitted in the LRC. Chewing gum must be left AT HOME. Chewing in the LRC will always result in detention.

The LRC is always a working environment. Please do not disturb those working by playing ball games or shouting nearby.

     

How do I join the LRC?

How many books can I borrow?

You are already a member of the LRC. You may usually borrow up to two fiction and two non-fiction books at any time.

Most books can be borrowed for up to two weeks.

If you would like to keep a book longer please renew it.

Please bring anything that you would like to borrow to the issue desk.

A member of the LRC team (staff or prefect) will issue it for you.

You are responsible for all resources that you borrow.

Never ‘lend’ something to a friend – if they lose it then YOU will have to pay for it!

How will I find books that I like?

     

You can use the online catalogue search or ask at the desk for help.

All members of the LRC team, staff and prefects, enjoy recommending books!

Ask your friends what they are reading – you might enjoy it too.

Join the book club – read books from many genres.

Let us know if there are books you feel the LRC should buy.

If you can’t find something please ask!

 

What happens if I lose or damage a book or bring it back late? you bring books back late then you will be fined 2p per day per late book. you lose a book you will have to pay the replacement cost. you later find it we will refund you. you damage a book you will be expected to repair it. it is beyond repair you will have to pay for a replacement.

What can I do in the LRC at break or lunch times?

You can drop into the LRC at break or lunch time if you want to get on with homework, read or choose a book.  During lunch times there will also be a computer room open where you can get on with any school work. Please observe the ICT code of conduct at all times.  Peer Supporters can be found in the LRC. Come and find them if you would like them to help you.

If you do not have work to get on with or if you don’t want to read please use the playground.

The LRC is reserved for those who wish to work, read or speak to Peer Supporters.



What services are available in the LRC?

You can always ask for help. Whether you are looking for a good book, or trying to find information, the LRC Staff and Prefects are here to help you.  You can ask for advice about setting out projects and printing them.  There is a coin-operated photocopier for your use (please ask for training).  You can use the online search engine to look through the library catalogue and find out which resources you have on loan or would like to borrow.  You can post reviews on the website.  The LRC houses a small number of computers. At lunch times a computer room is also available for you to use for school work.  There is an interactive whiteboard for use during lessons. Please do not touch the whiteboard unless asked to do so by a member of staff.  There is a computer linked to our weather station. Feel free to browse this data.  We can laminate and bind your projects in the LRC and also cover your exercise books.  The LRC can print in colour for you (this is a cash service not part of your print credit) Please check the services price lists displayed in the LRC and on the website.

During busy periods please allow at least 24 hours for services.

When will I need cash in the LRC?

Cash is needed for book covering, project binding, photocopying, library fines and colour prints. Please put correct coins into photocopier as it doesn’t give change. Ask for change at the desk. You will also need to pay if you lose or damage a book or resource.

Check the current price list for all services. Please keep your cash safe.

How can I help in the LRC?

Year 11 Prefects help out in the LRC. If you are not a prefect there are sometimes other jobs that you can do to help. Please ask at the desk if you would like to help us – we reward helpers with house points!

May I do my homework in the LRC?

The LRC is a great place to get your homework done. You can come in during break or lunch time or stay after school up to 4:30 (except on Friday). There’s no need to tell us you are coming – just turn up. If you come after school please sign in and out in case there’s an emergency.

Just ask if you would like some help. Prefects and staff are here for you.

If you want to stay after school but have no homework and do not wish to read quietly please wait elsewhere. The LRC is reserved for those who wish to work or read.
