History of Rodeo Issue...

In this issue we decided to focus on the history of rodeo, and how it all began. The sun is coming up, the smell of coffee is in the air, the cattle are mooing for their breakfast, and the horses are drinking from the nearby pond.

This is the picture of both a rodeo athletes world and a ranchers world. You will see very quickly that rodeoing and ranching go hand-­in-­ hand. Whether you are rodeoing or ranching, you have to ride well, work hard, and not give up just because the cattle got out for the third time in one day. In doing my research for this issue, I found out the word ‘rodeo’ is a form of the verb ‘rodear,’ which means to surround or round up. The word was used to describe the act of gathering cattle before a cattle drive. Now every time I go to gather cattle, I am going to be thinking...let’s go rodeo boys!

When  you  grow  up  in  the  rodeo  world,  chances  are  your  dream  is  making  it  to  the  bright  lights  of  Las  Vegas  to  compete  at  the  NFR.  But  what  happens  once  you  make  LW RQFH \RX KDYH DFFRPSOLVKHG \RXU GUHDPV" ,Q 1)5 4XDOLÂżHU 7HDP 5RSLQJ +HDGHU Colter  Toddâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  story,  he  traded  in  life  on  the  rodeo  road  for  dirt  roads,  roping  steers  for  beef  cattle,  a  living  quarters  for  an  actual  address,  and  the  loud  crowds  and  announcers  for  a  peaceful  piece  of  heaven  on  earth  at  his  family  ranch  in  Arizona.  Colter  retired  at  the  top  of  his  game,  which  is  almost  unheard  of  in  the  rodeo  world,  when  KH OHIW WKH ÂżQDOV LQ +LV GHFLVLRQ ZDV D surprisingly  easy  one  to  make-­-­-­after  praying  about  it,  it  seemed  that  God  replaced  his  desire  to  be  on  the  road  with  the  want  to  be  home.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;When  KH WROG PH , VXSSRUWHG KLP +H SUD\V DERXW KLV decisions,  and  he  knew  that  he  would  not  get  a  second  chance  at  raising  his  kids,â&#x20AC;?  Carly  Todd,  Colterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  wife,  said  about  his  decision.  After  all, Â

Four  generations  of  Toddâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  live  on  The  Warbonnet  5DQFK LQ $UL]RQD ,Q DIWHU JHWWLQJ WLUHG RI the  cold  winters  in  Livingston,  Montana,  Colterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  grandfather,  Larry  Todd  Sr.,  moved  his  family  to  the  warm,  sunny  climate  of  Wilcox,  Arizona.  Colter  was  born  and  raised  on  the  same  ranch  KH QRZ OLYHV DQG ZRUNV RQ +H KDV ORWV RI IRQG

memories  of  growing  up  there,  and  is  grateful  his  kids  will  get  the  same  opportunity.

Working  cattle  and  checking  waters  with  his  NLGV LV D SHUIHFW GD\ IRU &ROWHU +H DQG KLV ZLIH Carly  have  three  beautiful  little  ranch  hands:  Madilyn,  Colter  Lee  and  Traven.  Being  a  Dad  and  a  good  husband  is  a  priority  to  Colter,  and  he  works  hard  to  make  sure  they  are  provided  with  every  opportunity  in  life,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;I  would  like  to  totally  support  my  kids  in  anything  they  dream  of  doing.â&#x20AC;?  When  asked  what  he  thought  of  one  of  his  kids  trying  to  make  the  NFR,  he  replied,  ³, ZRXOG VD\ JR IRU LW +RSHIXOO\ , FRXOG VKDUH some  of  the  advice  that  I  learned  while  I  was  rodeoing,  and  maybe  they  could  get  a  little  further  than  I  did.â&#x20AC;?

Colter  has  a  lot  of  fond  memories  from  going  down  the  road,  and  the  one  thing  he  is  very  proud  of  is  that  the  other  half  of  his  team  was  long  time  friend  Cesar  de  la  Cruz.  Cesar  and  Colter  had  been  roping  goats  and  setting  up  mini-­Thomas  and  Mack  arenas  since  they  were  little  boys.  They  were  a  great  team,  and  proved  to  be  unbeatable  through  junior  rodeos,  high  school  rodeos,  and,  of  course,  through  the  pro  rodeo  ranks.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Roping  with  Colter  was  AWESOME!  Still,  to  this  day,  I Â

WKLQN KH KDV WKH EHVW ZRUN HWKLF RI DQ\ +HDGHU I  know.  We  would  rope  twice  a  day.  We  were  real  young  jumping  into  a  shark  tank,â&#x20AC;?  Cesar  said,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;In  my  eyes  he  will  always  be  one  of  the  URSLQÂśHVW VXFNHUV DOLYH +H KDV URSHG VR P\ things  in  his  life  like  deer,  javalina,  bear,  and  lots  of  wild  goats-­-­-­that  helped  him  be  great.  Great  ropers  to  me  are  great  inside  and  out  of  the  arena,  and  Colter  is  just  that.â&#x20AC;?   Two  team  ropers  who  Colter  has  always  looked  up  to,  and  thinks  are  great,  are  Tee  Woolman  and  Clay  Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Brien  Cooper.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tee  always  shared  a  lot  of  knowledge  with  me  and  was  a  great  mentor,  and  Clay  because  I  never  saw  his  emotions  take  control  of  him.  I  always  thought  he  looked  like  he  was  catching  a  bus,  whether  he  caught  or  missed.â&#x20AC;?

When  asked  what  advice  he  had  for  others  trying  to  make  it,  Colter  replied:  ´+RUVHPDQVKLS +RUVHPDQVKLS LV FUXFLDO nowadays  to  keep  your  horses  working  as  long  as  possible.  I  would  also  say,  in  team  roping,  when  you  get  a  good  partner,  stick  with  him!  Do  not  jump  ship  as  soon  as  the  going  getâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  little  tough.  A  lot  of  times  I  think  teams  do  not  stick  together  long  enough  to  become  the  next  great  team!  I  roped  with  the  same  partner  for  4-­years,  and  it  was  very  special  to  me!  We  had  a  great  time!â&#x20AC;?

Colter  and  Carly  do  miss  some  of  the  more  exciting  times  they  had  on  the  rodeo  trail-­-­ -­the  friends  they  met  along  the  way  and  the  two  weeks  they  spent  in  Vegas  every  year. Â

come  across  that  really  good  one,  one  day!â&#x20AC;?,  said  Carly.  In  20-­years,  Colter  hopes  to  have  many  more  cows,  a  pasture  full  of  nice  horses,  to  be  able  to  watch  his  kids  become  successful,  and  to  still  be  spending  time  with  his  beautiful  wife.  Colter  Toddâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  life  out  on  the  ranch  seems  calm,  VHUHQH DQG IXOÂżOOLQJ +H VHHPV DW SHDFH ZLWK KLV decision  to  stay  home,  not  doubting  the  decision  he  made  to  quit  while  he  was  at  the  top.  And,  after  spending  time  with  him,  I  understand  why  he  made  the  choice  to  stay  home.  Colter  was  successful  enough  rodeoing  to  be  able  to  live  out  his  dream-­ -­-­his  dream  of  being  exactly  where  he  wants  to  be  in  life;Íž  for  most  of  us,  that  alone  is  something  we  dream  of  being  able  to  do.

JUSTIN&ELYSE KOON The  Realities  of  Living  the        Rodeo  Dream  &  Staying       Happily  Married Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  face  it,  being  married  to  rodeo,  I  mean  to  a  guy  who  rodeos,  isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  exactly  the  two-­story  house  with  the  white  picket  fence  suburbia  version  of  the  American  dream;Íž  especially  with  all  the  ups-­and-­downs,  long  nights,  fast  food,  weeks  apart  from  each  other,  and  money  coming  in  and  going  out  at  a  rate  that  would  make  a  bankerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  head  spin.  However,  for  Justin  and  Elyse  Koon,  even  the  less  glamorous  parts  of  the  rodeo  life  are  a  small  price  to  pay  for  the  chance  to  live  their  dreams.  Who  can  put  a  price  tag  on  being  able  to  pursue  what  you  most  love  doing,  especially,  with  the  one  you  love  as  your  team  mate?  -XVWLQ ÂżQLVKHG WK LQ WKH 3%5 %XLOW )RUG 7RXJK :RUOG )LQDOV (O\VH GLGQÂśW JURZ XS LQ WKH rodeo  world,  but  after  meeting  Justin,  decided  it  was  a  lifestyle  in  to  which  she  wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  mind  marrying.  :KHQ DVNHG ZKDW PDNHV KHU ZLOOLQJ WR VDFULÂżFH normalcy  so  that  Justin  can  rodeo,  Elyse  replied:

Eclectic Where is your favorite place to shop? I LOVE shopping at small boutiques with unique items-­-­-­like Fancy Pheasant in Stephenville, TX. With limited shopping time and my ability to get overwhelmed when there are too many choices...small boutiques provide me with the ability assess my purchase options quick, identify my wants versus needs, and go!

You have two beautiful daughters. What do you want most for them in life? Martin

and I both think education is huge; ZH ZDQW RXU JLUOV WR Ă&#x20AC;QG VRPHWKLQJ that they are passionate about and pursue it! But, as their mother, I know the pressure that young girls face regarding their appearance. I want my daughters to live a healthy life, feel comfortable in their own skin, and appreciate their uniqueness.

What out of your closet are you planning on handing down to them? I have told

I have told Gabie I will save my wedding gown for her, but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see that happening with the poofy sleeves and all! Hopefully, I will pass down my ability to be brave enough to come out of my closet wearing anything...even if it is only once :)

Must have daily beauty products?

I go from work, to working out, to coaching Gabieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volleyball, to bottle-­ feedings, and squeezing in vino time with my besties (they help pass the time by ZKHQ 0DUWLQ LV RQ WKH URDG 6R , GHĂ&#x20AC;QLWHO\ KDYH P\ JR WR SLHFHV +DYDLDQDV Ă LS Ă RSV SUDFWLFDO DQG FRPI\ 0\ -LPP\ Choo boots-­-­-­classic. What is your shopping weakness?

Martin would say everything...I love to shop period. But, I do love shopping for my girls (even though Gabie has developed her own sense of style). For PH LW¡V GHĂ&#x20AC;QLWHO\ VKRHV MHDQV DQG RII WKH shoulder tops!

Favorite Accessory?

I always say my favorite accessories are my wedding ring and my charm necklace with both my girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s names on the charms. But, after that...a fabulous pair of shoes can transform any look!

As  we  sat  in  the  bleachers  for  an  interview  last  October  at  the  US  Finals,  I  found  out  very  quickly  that  Billie  Bray  is  a  women  who  is  passionate  about  her  family,  working  hard,  and  competition.  I  also  found  out  she  does  not  like  to  talk  about  herself,  and  does  not  need  anyone  to  pat  her  on  the  back.  She  sees  what  needs  to  be  done,  and  she  does  it!  When  I  asked  her  about  what  to  do  when  life  gets  hard,  her  response  really  stuck  out  to  me,  and  I  would  like  to  share  it  with  you:  â&#x20AC;&#x153;No  one  said  it  would  be  easy;  when  life  gets  tough,   you  just  have  to  bow  up  and  get  it  done.  Hard  work  is  what  makes  the  world  go  round,  it  doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  matter  what  you  do...just  work  hard.â&#x20AC;?   This  reminds  me  of  Nikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  slogan,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just  Do  It,â&#x20AC;?  a  message  I  have  always  liked.  Some  people  today  just  want  things  handed  to  them  on  a  platter;  and,  I  like  to  say,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;News  Flash!  It  is  going  to  take  some  work...â&#x20AC;?
