Editor's letter "Being negative only makes a difficult journey more difficult. You may be given a cactus, but you don't have to sit on it." - Joyce Meyer I’ve learned a few important things throughout the past year. First, I have discovered that sometimes we find ourselves in a state of imprisonment whether it be physically or mentally. But the only one who can keep us from being free is us. I know people imprisoned by fear, jobs, relationships and even some who are imprisoned by the limitations they put upon themselves. We may find ourselves in situations and places we never imagined, but never let circumstances, other people’s opinions, or even your own physical limitations dictate your goals and focus in life. A perfect example of someone who didn’t let his circumstances shackle his purpose is our cover boy, Weston. In an interview about his stolen gear bag right before a big event, he stated, “It’s not the gear that makes you; it’s who you are as a bullfighter. You have to take the punches and roll with it.” I love that attitude. Secondly I have really begun to understand more than ever that everyone living has a purpose. If you are breathingyou have a Purpose designed by God just for you and it’s important we stay focused and not let storms around us derail us from our journeys. And by the way if you don’t yet know where you are going in life - that was my third discovery! Develop a vision and a plan and go for it. Of course it may evolve over the years but that’s the beauty of life - it is ever-changing.

Hall of Fame

Military and Rodeo By Shannon Geddes In the early days of rodeo,1940’s, the men that competed in rodeo were also members of the military. One of the many definitions of veteran is “a person who has had long experience in a particular field or old hand”. This definition holds true for the cowboy as well. One primary example of a veteran/ cowboy was Frank Mendes. Frank was an accomplished bull rider before he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1941. After serving his country and acquiring the nickname of “Captain Cowboy” from his fellow army comrades, Frank returned to bull riding.

www.rodeofame.com

Frank won many events including the Cow Palace in San Francisco and Madison Square Garden in New York City. He loved participating in rodeo and was one of the charter members of the Cowboy Turtle Association, now known as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Frank served his country as well as stood up for the rights of the rodeo cowboy. Frank came from an amazing legacy of rodeo cowboys. All five of his brothers competed in the sport of rodeo and were professional rodeo cowboys. This sport of rodeo passed down through generations of the Mendes Family and his posterity can still be found within the Professional Rodeo Circuit.

Brazilian PBR champ takes Rookie of the Year in US By Brenda Matamoros

This one is for the record books! Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) won the 2017 World Finals event title as the only rider to go a perfect 6-for-6 at the five-day event. The 2017 PBR Brazil Champion capped his near flawless performance with the high-marked ride of the event, covering Magic Train (Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team) for 94.5 points to win the Built Ford Tough Championship Round and earn this year’s Lane Frost/Brent Thurman Award. Leme began the event No. 53 in the world standings and rocketed to No. 7 and claiming the 2017 Rookie of the Year title after his astounding performance adapting to the world’s rankest bulls to net 2,532.5 world points and $416,000. The 21-year-old is now the 20th rider to win the event title and the fifth in PBR history to cover all of his bulls in the process. Leme competed against bull riders he idolized his whole life. “To walk in and see the great talents I’ve been watching on TV is like an amazing dream come true,” said Leme, who arrived in the U.S. a little more than a week ago. “All the riders have made me feel right at home.” Leme, who played semipro soccer in Brazil, is an accomplished competitor in karate, and was in the U.S. for only eight days before making history at the World Finals.

To walk in and see the great talents I’ve been watching on TV is like an amazing dream come true. “I think I’m still dreaming,” he said in holding the eventwinning check for $300,000. “I trained and worked hard to win the World Finals, but I didn’t think I had a chance to win Rookie of the Year. To accomplish that together is without a doubt the best day of my life.”

GOD BLOG

SELLING OUT FOR THE LORD

World bull riding champion, Scott Mendes, shows that passion for God and the sport can go hand in hand. By Brenda Matamoros-Beveridge

In 1994, professional bull rider, Scott Mendes had reached fame and fortune and all the lifestyle and temptations that usually come with it. That was until tragedy struck and his best friend was killed while riding bull riding in NFR - right in front of Mendes. That was the day Mendes became a born again Christian. Everything from then on he did for the Lord including saying no to lucrative sponsorships that involved alcohol and other things he found questionable. Mendes became one of the 20 founding fathers of the Professional Bull Riders and qualified for two PBR world finals and won the 1997 PRCA World Championship all while being true to himself and his Christian faith. “I know God wanted to use my life to show that if someone commits to him, great things will happen,” Mendes said. The third-generation bull rider, originally from Visalia, California and raised in Reno, Nevada - now resides in Texas - is now a pastor and the Founder and Executive Director of Western Harvest Ministries, located in Weatherford, TX. Mendes has dedicated himself to ministering and sharing his testimony all over the United States and putting on bull riding camps through Conquering The Beast Ministries. He is also an actor and produces family films and promotional and educational productions.

“I know when I sold out to the Lord I thought to myself, I don’t care if it’s 100 million dollars, I am not going to do anything that will hinder the eyes of what a true Christian should be for others. I do what I do with passion because I know the Lord has called me to reach cowboys.” SCOTT MENDES Western Minister & Media Producer www.scottmendes.com • www.westernharvestmedia.com • www.westernharvestministries.com

JESS LOCKWOOD

MAKES HISTORY AS YOUNGEST

PBR WORLD CHAMPION By Brenda Matamoros

LAS VEGAS, NV – After five days and six rounds in one of the tightest championship races in PBR history, Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) was crowned the 2017 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) World Champion Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena. Lockwood, 20, is the youngest World Champion cowboy in PBR history, and he joins three-time World Champion Silvano Alves (Pilar do Sul, Brazil) as the only riders to win the World Championship the year after being named the organization’s Rookie of the Year.

He is the 17th rider to claim the PBR World Champion gold buckle in the PBR’s 24-year history. Lockwood earns the PBR’s $1 million World Champion bonus and finished 2017 with earnings of $1,525,292.90 and 4,862.5 world points. “The money is icing on the cake, but money doesn’t mean much and it goes away,” Lockwood said. “The championship buckle will be with me forever.”

Lockwood went 3-for-6 at the 24th annual World Finals, reclaiming the No. 1 spot in the world following his Round 2 victory.

Lockwood battled back from various serious injuries, including four broken ribs, a punctured lung and a lacerated kidney.

In winning three consecutive rounds at the season-culminating event, the Montana cowboy’s name was further etched into the PBR record books.

“A lot of grit went into this,” Lockwood said. “I got pretty banged up this year. You got to cowboy up each and every weekend and make the most of every bull.”

Lockwood won the first three rounds,

BOLTON

HAS ONE FOOT IN THE DIRT OF PBR AND ANOTHER ON THE RED CARPET By Brenda Matamoros the sport and keep up some great relationships,” he said.

Following his appearance on “Dancing with the Stars,” Bonner Bolton did not slow down as a model and entertainment personality. He has appeared as a face for American Eagle jeans in a new campaign and shot with several premium fashion magazines. Bolton has also kept a foot in PBR, when he and his rodeo cowboy dad, Toya, brought their bull, Houdini’s Ghost, to Austin to compete in the PBR’s elite series. The Texas cowboy, who remains on injured reserve after shattering his C-2 in the 2016 PBR season opener in Chicago, found another way to compete against the world’s best. “If I’m not going to be riding, this is a great way to stay connected to

20

www.rodeofame.com

In the fall, Bolton had made a whirlwind appearance at New York Fashion Week, where he hop-scotched velvet-rope soirees just as his cover feature in the premium magazine THE IMPRESSION was hitting. “I enjoy the new world IMG has introduced me to, and I also hope to be able to stay with the stock contracting,” Bolton said. “These animals are the heroes of our sport. I love being around them and taking care of them. Best of all, I have a great partner in my dad, who has a real eye for bull talent.” Toya Bolton is also excited about his son’s new outlet to be in the PBR. “It will be fun to be there together to watch a bull of ours do his thing and hopefully perform like he’s supposed to,” Toya said.

Bolton is now in discussions with IMG to pursue various other projects. Stay tuned for his next move. Bolton’s 2016 accident in Chicago is featured in a new Go 90 series "I Got Wrecked" streaming for free on Verizon's Rated Red Network. The eight-episode series tells the inside story of the most notorious wrecks in PBR history.

THE BUCKAROO PROGRAM MENTORS JR. NFR BAREBACK & BRONC RIDERS By Lori O’Harver The thing about cowboys, both young and old, is their heroes are always cowboys. The thing about champion cowboys is they all share a passion for helping kids with hats too big, real short stirrup leathers and dreams as huge as the Western sky. During the Jr. NFR, Heith DeMoss, Nick LaDuke, Heath Ford, Bobby Mote and JR Vezain will be checking in and helping the kids of the Junior Roughstock Association as they ride at the Las Vegas Convention Center for $35,000 in cash, prizes and the championships. It’s the first year for saddle bronc riding to be included in the Jr. NFR. It’s also the first year for the big cowboy – little cowboy mentoring known as the Buckaroo Program, sponsored by PRG Group and United Concrete. You know the pro’s, here’s your chance to get to know a little about Bronc Ryder DeMers, Rodee Owen DeMers, Sam Tee Peterson, Brice Patterson and Paul Allyn O’Hair. The Jr. NFR starts at 11:45 am at the Las Vegas Convention Center, December 7 through 11.

RULES & REGULATIONS

OUTSIDE the Box

By Lori O’Harver

Governance is important but rules aren’t to be confused with commandments. What has served one generation or phase of business of the sport needs constant review to stay relevant. Join Rodeo Fame and Bronc Riding Nation as we explore the good, the bad and the visionaries who keep the bucking horse industry growing and satisfying to those who depend on the standards set to provide fairness for contestants, horse owners and most importantly, the fans who want to fall in love.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – CINCH Boyd Gaming Chute Out is in its third year of production. Created with innovation in mind, it’s the only rodeo in town that is open to wagering at The Orleans, Gold Coast and Sam’s Town Sports Books. Last year, rodeo history was made when organizers added instant replay as an option to review and potentially reverse the judge’s decisions. In the bareback and saddle bronc riding, the rule states that the rider’s heels must be above the points of the horse’s shoulders when his front feet first hit the ground out of the bucking chute. It’s called the ‘mark out rule’. Failing to keep those feet in place results in an immediate disqualification everywhere in professional rodeo. The forward thinkers involved in the CINCH Boyd Gaming Chute Out have state of the art video replay capabilities. In light of that, they chose to give contestants the right to protest a disqualifying call and have it immediately reviewed by the team of judges.

Wild West Wade Sundell was the first rodeo contestant in history to legally challenge the judges’ ruling and win a reversal on a disqualification at CINCH Boyd Gaming Chute Out 2016. Avid Photography by Phillip Kitts

28

www.rodeofame.com

Wade Sundell, bronc riding’s beloved half-outlaw and RFD-TV’s The American’s ‘million-dollar man’, was the first rodeo cowboy to put instant replay to the test after being called by the judges on the mark out rule in the first round at last year’s event at The Orleans Arena. After a brief judges’ huddle in front of a monitor that replayed the ride from several angles and speeds, the decision was reversed and the cowboy was back in the game. The fans loved it! The historical precedent set has been debated through out bronc riding nation with nothing but positive feedback from the fans and contestant’s side.

+Fearless WESTON RUTKOWSKI The BFO Bullfighter to Watch By Lori O'Harver

Weston Rutkowski, 28, never imagined he’d be the first Bullfighters Only (BFO) reigning champion with his sights set on repeating the feat in Las Vegas this December. He saw his wild athleticism and dedication to disciplined training taking him to a career in the NFL or NBA, but a new passion consumed him when he danced with his first bull. He was 22 years old and his goals were forever altered.

“I had ridden three or four bulls and wasn’t as good at it as I wanted to be. One day, I stepped into the arena and fought one,” said Rutkowski. “Until Bullfighters Only resurrected free style bullfighting and took it to levels only imagined before, a guy just had to work to sell himself to various rodeo committees and hope he could make a living protecting cowboys. The BFO has built a platform that made us contestants and gave us the opportunity to thrive doing what we love.” “Winning the first title was kind of surreal for me. I wanted to win the 2016 BFO Tour, the first of it’s kind in 16 years. I’m bad at losing, extremely competitive. I show up expecting to win and am only happy when it happens,” Rutkowski said. “In this game, it isn’t what have you done, it’s what have you done lately. I want this second BFO title.” Rutkowski views his sport differently than the competition. It’s his job and that work ethic of his? Off the charts. He’s up before dawn feeding his body a specialized diet and training day and night with a personal coach. Speed drills, agility and strength training are part of the relentless program

designed to give him an advantage both in handling the bulls he draws and minimizing injury.

His goal is to sweep the entire BFO series in Las Vegas, from winning the stand-alone, kick-off event, The Roughy Cup, for the second time then working through the tournament style series to be crowned BFO World Champion. “Spitfire is the bull to draw there,” Rutkowski said. “His owner, Manuel Costa, manages him with an incredibly light schedule so he’s always hungry for a fight and brings his A Game every time. His opponent bringing that A Game right back is a thriller from every perspective and a winner every time. I want to be that guy.” Aaron Ferguson, founder and CEO of Bullfighters Only had this to say about BFO events during NFR Week. “BFO Las Vegas is truly our crown jewel event. Not just in terms of the competition itself, which is guaranteed to see some upsets, but our production is staged in a closed tent on the Tropicana parking lot. Fans can expect the same explosive show they’ve come to love with more artistic flair and surprises than ever before. Come early and enjoy the Otterbox Tailgate Party featuring music, food, drinks and games. Stay after the show to hang out with your favorite BFO bullfighters and fans, plus listen to more great music at the Hooey After Party at Robert Irvine’s Restaurant and Bar inside the Tropicana.”

CUSTOM WRAPPING NOT JUST FOR PRESENTS What was once an old sign shop, has now become a booming vehicle wrap business. Justin Watts just happened to be driving down the road one day about 3 years ago and came upon a cool little sign shop for sale and thought that just maybe it would be a good idea for a business for him and a buddy.

be two-toning a ferrari or de-oxidizing, cleaning, and wrapping an older horse trailer to give it a fresh new look, The Graphix House can meet the needs of just about everyone.

The idea for this business came from Justin’s college years. As a student and member of the rodeo team for UNLV, Justin had a couple of guys that wanted to wrap his trailer and pay him to advertise. He got paid to be a mobile billboard. After replacing and upgrading everything, Justin’s business is The Graphix House. With the help of an amazing graphic designer or as Justin calls him, the heart and soul of the business, Albert Trevino and his number one installer Jayson Thomas, they have a business that caters to and understands the needs of the western community. SPEAKING THROUGH ART

Artist, Teddy Charlton is the epitome of setting goals, hard work and perseverance. Her dedication and energy can be felt in each of her paintings. As a young adult, Teddy returned to college at Central Washington University. Teddy was majoring in Graphic Design, however after one of her phenomenal professors, Cynthia Kriebel, reviewed her credits, she advised Teddy to double major and also get her Fine Art Degree. It was a ten year endeavor, but between working two jobs and saving money, Teddy graduated in 1993 with her double major. Teddy owns Riders Heart Studio in Ellensburg, WA. Her work is an amazing collection of oils, watercolors and pastels. Her paintings, whether landscape, animal or still life are so vivid and full of texture, they transport your mind to a happy memory or the want to explore that location on your own.

As an artist, Teddy’s everyday life becomes paintings highlighted in her mind. Ordinary people may see sagebrush and cattle, but Teddy sees a beautiful painting and she makes it come to life. Her attention to detail makes her paintings speak to the viewer. Teddy’s work was most recently featured at the Clymer Museum of Art in an exhibit called, “An Eye for Equine”. She spent many hours on getting this show just right and connecting with her audience. As an artist, Teddy has truly learned to trust herself and it shows through the exceptional work that ends up on the canvas.

STEINER RANCH STEAKHOUSE

STEAK WITH A SIDE OF HISTORY

Steiner Ranch Steakhouse was opened as a tribute by the Steiner Family to the glory days of roping and rodeo. Buck Steiner made his living in a number of ways, but raising cattle seemed to be his first love.

Overlooking Lake Travis in Austin, Texas, Steiner Ranch Steakhouse is located on land that was once home to rodeo cattle and horses. Not only will you find amazing food, but the history located inside the steakhouse is worth the trip alone. The Steiner Family has donated many of the valuable heirlooms for special viewing inside the restaurant.

When in Austin, Texas, stop by the Steiner Steakhouse. With three floors and many odds and ends to see from days of old, you will feel right at home. From steak to lobster, you will have a meal that is sure to please. The Steiner Ranch Steakhouse also is home to an extensive wine cellar and can pair the perfect wine with your entree. Take a moment to stand out on the patio, feel the warm breeze and look out over the land that surrounds Steiner Ranch Steakhouse. It’s not hard to imagine the days when the cattle and horses grazed the land.

The humbleness of the Steiner Family can be felt when visiting with Bobby. The legacy that they have in the Steiner Ranch Steakhouse is something that he is proud of and enjoys sharing with those that enter.

Snuffy Chancellor The Soul of a Clown By Lori O’Harver

In this world, every birth is a blessing. Only those brave and faithful enough to follow their hearts are able to prove it. At 78 years young, Snuffy Chancellor has nothing left to prove and a world of wisdom to share. When Snuffy was coming of age, rodeo clowns were proud of their professions. The distinction between clowns and bull fighters had yet to be drawn. The challenge was to make people laugh and enjoy themselves. The first time he carefully drew on his makeup and stepped out into the arena was on a dare. When the lights went down on that performance, a clown was born. He never looked back. “I loved being a clown and barrel man. My first barrel was an old wooden pickle barrel. That thing sure beat me up,” he remembers. “My partner was my miniature mule, Horsefly. His tricks and antics kept people laughing and me stepping up my game to not be upstaged. Together, we made people laugh

and every time it happened, it brought us all joy.” Chancellor’s home town is Fort Worth, Texas. His favorite rodeo is the Fort Worth Stock Show. “In Fort Worth, my friends all came around and said, ‘Well, Snuffy! We didn’t know you could do that!’ Over the years, I was able to touch many lives, encourage a lot of people to live their dreams. I don’t think I realized it all that much while it was happening. I was just living my own dreams, trying to make people laugh and forget about their troubles for a while.” “The reward for a career well lived comes when it’s over. The memories, the cherished friendships and people who tell you that you changed their lives for the better,” Snuffy said. “I want to be remembered for doing my best.” Find Snuffy Chancellor on Facebook and brighten his day!

BRODY CRESS

Brody Cress meets the press after winning his hometown rodeo, Cheyenne Frontier Days. Bronc Riding Nation Photo

From the time he could stand on his own, Brody Cress could always be found in the shadow of the Cheyenne Frontier Days podium while the bronc riding champions like Billy Etbauer collected their buckles and took their rightful places in the rich history of his hometown rodeo. He wanted just one thing, to stand that hallowed ground and tip his hat to the cheers of the crowd as the buckle was placed in his hands. Last summer, his dream came true and the big wins just kept coming. Cress made history by being the first to win Pendleton Round Up, Rodeo Salinas and Cheyenne all in the same year. At the end of the regular season, he was qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) with $105,664.82 won. That’s 6th in the world standings, just $78,262 and change off event leader, former world champion, Jacobs Crawley. With WNFR’s ten rounds, each paying $26,231 to win, the championship is within reach for the talented, focused 21-year-old.

It’s 100% of the finished product, and I’ve never made a perfect ride. There’s always something I need to work on. That’s what I do.”

While this is the first year for Cress’s name to hit the marquis, the road that brought him here has been long, deliberate and fun. “I dreamed my whole life of competing on the level of horses I had the opportunity to ride this season,” Cress said. “My parents and great friends like Colt

THE STORY OF KILLER BEE By Lori O'Harver ELK CITY, Oklahoma - Late in July of 2005, Molly Bee and her three-monthold blaze-faced filly stepped onto the trailer bound for Nebraska’s Big Rodeo at Burwell. Molly Bee was an old pro. She’d bucked her way up and down the Beutler & Son rodeos across the Midwest and Texas, been chosen to work the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) five times. Not a fan in the house didn’t wonder what the judges would have marked them. “The judges were right, but I had to ask a few of them what would have happened if Wright had gone clean,” said Beutler. “The consensus was that a new world record would have been set that night. What Ryder couldn’t humanly deliver in style, Killer Bee’s score would have made up for.”
