ALUMNI E-NEWS #9 • SUMMER 2014
This is our ninth alumni e-newsletter and that is an impressive amount of ice water you just dumped on your head so hey nice job. AAAAAAAND, WE’RE BACK. (ALMOST) (ALSO WE DIDN’T REALLY GO ANYWHERE) (BUT WE KINDA LIKE THE HEADLINE ANYWAY) —RSS Alumni Happy Hour (21+): Wednesday, September 10, 7 - 9 p.m. at Antler Beer & Wine Dispensary, 123 Allen Street, on the Lower East Side —Class of 2014 at High School Night: Monday, November 24, 6 p.m. at RSS —College Alumni Reunion (for the Classes of 2007 - 2010): Tuesday, November 25, details TBD
THIS IS OUR JAM We asked our boy Sam Shapiro ‘10 to put together a playlist just in time for the dog days of summer. (Sidebar: Did you know the term “dog days” dates back to ancient Rome? True fact.) Sam chose two songs with a person’s name in the title and two songs by bands involving animals. Coincidence? You tell us! Click here to read up on Sam’s picks and click here to listen to his seven songs, plus one from Mr. Palmer. Also, don’t tell Ariana Grande we left her off the list.
WE ARE SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!!! Not to brag or anything, but we think our alumni e-newsletters are downright fantastic, so we figured we should make it easy and appealing for you (or anyone!) to peruse past issues. Thus we’ve started collecting all our e-news over at Issuu, just like a bonafide shelter magazine or something. From now on, you’ll always be able to enjoy the latest issue on the alumni page of our website and all past issues here. Bookmark away, you lovely people! WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS (Literally, we are.) Big congrats to a whole bunch of RSS alumni from the Class of 2013 who play for the 92nd Street Y and won the gold medal at the 2014 Maccabi Games in Detroit last week in the 16-and-under basketball division. They competed against 15 other teams in the tournament, fought off a 14-point deficit in the 3rd quarter of the semifinal game, and came back to win that game after six (6!!!) overtime periods. They then won the final game 70-65 against a scrappy team from Philly with a 6’8” center. Bravo, guys! The team includes Gabriel Ravetz ‘13, Ethan Miller ‘13, Justin Fishman, Matt Zlotnick ‘13, Michael Gatan ‘13, and Jonny Mansbach ‘13.
SCHOOL DAZE, PART ONE Can you believe these kiddos are heading to college right now?! We can’t either! But we are super proud of our Class of 2010 and know they will all have a remarkable year.
SCHOOL DAZE, PART TWO Can you believe these kidlets are days away from starting high school?! We can’t either! (Honestly we kind of can. We did just mail them some goodies from 8th grade graduation, so yeah, of course it’s time for 9th grade.) Anyway, we are proud of our Class of 2014, too! And excited to hear about their big first year.
SAYONARA, STAIRCASE We’ve been rocking hard hats and swinging hammers over at 84th Street during a construction project that will result in a new entrance, a new library, and lots of new and improved shared and classroom space. Check out some photos of the transformation here.
ICE ICE BABY CASEY Obviously every fourth person in America is taking some time out of his or her day this month to dump a bucket of ice water on his or her head, and we have had jolly good fun watching so many RSS alumni soak themselves on Facebook. We are especially proud that so many of you made a point to encourage your friends to donate AND dump ice water on their heads, since the donating part is really the whole point. Nice job, dear alumni, nice job.
CAN’T STOP WON’T STOP Our social media channels have been relatively quiet over the summer because oh hey summer but we are gearing up for all kinds of goodness starting basically now. Join us over at Instagram and also on the Rodeph Sholom School Alumni Facebook page which basically we promise you will love because frankly we are super lovable over here. That’s it for now. We are already excited about next month, when we’ll celebrate the start of a new school year, tell you what to read, and share a list of our 2013 - 2014 alumni supporters. Until then, enjoy the start of whatever you’re starting and be good and we love you! To be our very first alumni supporter of this school year, go here. Instagraaaaaaaam:
