ALUMNI E-NEWS #7 • MAY 2014

This is our seventh alumni e-newsletter. It’s not about Beyoncé but don’t hold that against us. Okay thanks. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are excited to present an opportunity to all of our alumni to make a tangible difference in the life of RSS. This is our first alumni giving campaign. Basically, we want as many of you as possible to make a contribution of any amount to help support a fantastic new-ish endeavor at RSS: The Mane Event, our student-run newspaper in the middle school. Founded two years ago, The Mane Event gives middle schoolers the chance to practice and perfect writing, design, creativity, and leadership. Your donation will help us publish three or four issues in the coming school year, plus increase the program’s budget so our young journalists may attend a conference and/or take a journalism-themed field trip. And to top it all off, your investement in RSS will show the rest of our community just how awesome you (and all of our alumni) really are. Go here to give a gift of ANY amount: Help Support The Mane Event! Every alum who supports the cause will be recognized in the 2014 RSS Giving Report. Plus we’ll give you stuff: $18 or more: a handwritten note from Mr. Palmer (he’s good at notes!) $36 or more: note, plus a shout-out on the RSS Alumni Facebook page $72 or more: note, shout-out, plus a super-duper magnet of an image from the RSS Instagram $180 or more: all of the above, plus an invitation to an alumni leadership dinner For realz, though, our goal is participation - we want as many of you as possible to show your love of RSS and your belief in what we do here by making a gift of any amount. We aim to raise $3000 before June 16. We hope you will help us! IF YOU ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL THEN WE WANT TO SEE YOU IN PERSON! RSS Family Service Day: Sunday, May 18, 9:30 a.m., Crotona Park Class of 2010 Graduation Party: Monday, May 19, 7 - 9 p.m., RSS gym Class of 2012 Reunion Dinner: Tuesday, May 20, 7:30 p.m., Carmine’s

RSS ARTIST OF THE MONTH We are so proud of Rachel Sard ‘04 for, like, a billion reasons, but here are three: she was recently accepted to the New York Academy of Art’s masters program; she recently finished a commissioned portrait that will hang in perpetuity in the public collection of the New York County Lawyers’ Association; and LOOK AT HER WORK (it’s amazing!). Bravo, Ms. Sard! WE WILL, WE WILL BLESS YOU Class of 2010 kiddos: you are cordially invited to a Graduation Erev Shabbat Service on Friday, May 30, at 6 p.m. at CRS, where our rabbis will bless you in honor of your graduation and the beginning of the next phase of your beautiful life. There’s an Oneg Shabbat to follow. RSVP to kbraunfeld@crsnyc.org. Also we’re totally going to cry at this service FYI. YOU WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU (And so will we.) We’ve said this before, but one of our favorite stories is about how once you’re pals at RSS you are pals forever and always. Here are four guys from the Class of 2007 who went off to different high schools and colleges but reunited in Israel just last month: Nick and Brandon and Leo spent the semester together in Prague and traveled to Israel to see Etai, who’s serving in the Israeli army. That’s awesome. THIS IS HOW WE DO If you went to RSS then chances are you have a remarkable foundation of knowledge in the sciences. Here’s a video that shows why. RSS ALUMS KNOW HOW TO ROCK A ROBE Sincere and stupendous Mazel Tov to the Class of 2006 alumni who are graduating college this month. We’ve seen pics from Michigan (bravo, Schwinder!) and Indiana (yay, Erica!) and would love to see more. Also, we hope all our 2006ers will join us at an alumni happy hour this summer. Details soon.

#INSTALATELY Recent alumni awesomeness has included a Class of 2011 study break and kids from the rollicking Class of 2013 reppin’ their high schools for current 7th graders. You can follow events like those and general goingons at RSS on Instagram and the RSS Alumni Facebook page. Woot!

That’s it for now. In a few weeks we’ll welcome our newest alumni into the fold, share some shots from the 2014 yearbook, and report on what we hope will be a successful alumni giving campaign. Until then, as always, be good and we love you!
