Brazilian Aerotropolis | PROFESSIONAL WORK | 2014 | GROUP | URBAN DESIGN | STATE OF SĂƒO PAULO, BRAZIL One of the most important airports in the country prepares for the new century with the intention to become the first brazilian aerotropolis. This concept is recently being implemented in other airports around the world, which provides attractiveness to the airport. It aims to connect urban activities, that creates a direct relationship with the airport, and its functional importance. Therefore, the airport becomes a special anchor that directly influences the urban development in its surroundings and also influences the whole region. After a macro-influence-study our team designed three main urban central areas that will compose the future aerotropolis. The airport surrounds those areas. Nonetheless, the multifunctional guidelines, intermodal urban transport systems, and open space merge together as if it was part of the city while expanding the site and the airport activity itself. After its completion this airport complex will gain its global influence.

Around the airport it is intended to create a compact central area with housing, shops, services, health, education and research facilities. Near the highway was developed a logistics area, while the existing urban fabric , which is precarious, has been redeveloped by creating a new center that recieves the existing population . An important area of this project is the expo center that creates a huge atractiveness to thee area .

The airport itself demands a consistent connection with the city, however, with the aerotropolis , this mobility relation becomes more important . Therefore it is proposed to fetch into the project BRT lines ( Bus Rapid Transit) , Regional Rail , Light Rails ( LRT ) and especially a TAV ( High Speed Train ) linking the airport with major cities . Furthermore, the existing connection to a new highway beltway is proposed.

The streams that pass through the airport site can not be kept naturally in the technical area, but are protected in the urban center through the transformation of its surroundings into a large urban park . Moreover, this leisure area protects the original forest and ground avoiding to create great land movements. It also helps as a structuring space for the mix-used neighbourhood composed around it.

Transforming the Mall PROFESSIONAL WORK | 2014 | GROUP | URBAN DESIGN | STATE OF SĂƒO PAULO, BRAZIL This area on the edge of the city has a suburban shopping mall with large parking areas , isolating it from its surroundings. The proposal of a new center for the city uses this mall as an anchor , but relates it back to the city in order to create a suitable area for pedestrians . This new neighbourhood emphasizes mix-used buildings while the public space projects shared streets, walkways, promenates, ect. There are also commercial and cultural tours all over the area. Urban mobility is covered by an intermodal station BRT and LRT. Moreover, a better connections to the city is designed. A convention center with hotel and offices creates a new economical anchor in the region. An urban park is design to create a better structure to the enterprise. This project is made to show how a shopping mall that is disconnected from the city can become exactly the oposite.

WALKWAY CONNECTIONS

FLEXIBLE PUBLIC SPACES | GARDENS

FLEXIBLE PUBLIC SPACES | EVENTS

During the negotiation about the construction capacity inside the malls lot, the old parking space starts to be transformed into squares for temporary activities, like gardens, fairs, exhibitions, outdoor cinema, ect. The implementation of the proposal fits into the existing urban fabric and connects to the surroundings with pedestrian bridges, crossing express ways, power lines and large gaps. In the picture to the left it is possible to see that the project offers many green connections and among its surroundings. Those connections generate a cultural circuit because of the sculptures scattered throughout the public spaces. Besides the BRT and LRT inserted into the area, there is a bike path system properly design to extend it self every corner of the area. Moreover, a concern exists about broaden the active facades, avoiding areas with walls or without diversity of uses, thus ensuring greater security and promotion for the region, making the project a single neighborhood in the city.

EPHEMERAL ACTIVITIES IN THE SQUARES In this temporary stage the areas adjacent to the shopping mall (shown in the background of this picture in the left) are proposed to function as an open space, because the built coeficient is at the limit for the mall. That does not stop the mall from open stores to these squares. On the other hand, the squares can house temporary events like gardens , exhibitions , outdoor cinemas, fairs, ect.

NEW BUILDINGS FACING THE STREET In the last stage mixed-use buildings are constructed in the areas around the mall turning it into a large open gallery that opens itself to the city. These commercial axes lead into the central park , surrounded by a shared street, and it works as a great space for public events in the region .

New City in Goiás PROFESSIONAL WORK | 2014 | GROUP | URBAN DESIGN | STATE OF GOIÁS, BRAZIL The creation of a new city, close to the capital Brasília, is based on the principles of TOD (Transit Oriented Development) and is designed to generate many neighbourhood centers arround a great urban central area. This large center includes a hospital, university campus, shopping mall, BRT lines, mixed-use buildings with commercial, residencial and business area. The city expands with a clear road hierarchy and with a system of public spaces that makes it very green. The horizontal residential areas that consists in less density has easy access to the centrality and quality public spaces. There are also large environmental conservation areas, which were proposed to create uses that better integrate with nature, as an ecological center, also with events and a low density residencial area around an existing horse farm. The access to the road that leads to Brasília has a commercial buffer that is well connected with the city.

Hamm-Süd HH CO-URBANISM | HCU HAMBURG | 2017 | GROUP | RESOURCE EFFICINECY+SUSTAINABLE URBANISM| HAMM-SÜD - HAMBURG, GERMANY Hamm-Süd is an area of Hamburg east of the city center, and besides its proximity, the occupation is mainly of industries and low-density residences. The result is unutilized public spaces, due to the low-density and segregation of the area, making this area an insufficient sub-center for their population. However, there are several potential changes that could occur. The synergy between industries and residents could change the aspect of the neighborhood, as well as the building occupation is proper for PV electricity production (potential of 8.5Gwh/a, which is above the consumption of the area). This aspect could also make it possible to host densification of buildings and population for the area, making it a very interesting district for the future of Hamburg. Therefore, the project intends to act into those potentials, making the energy production a synergetic catalytic element of development.

CONCEPT The proposal is to create a cooperative organization that would act into a looping chain of activities for urban interventions and energy production. The residents could invest through the cooperative to rent the rooftop of industries to produce electricity, whereas the cooperatives could finance tactical urbanism interventions in the neighborhood and have marketing benefits back. In this system, industries and residents are both investors and grantees, thus uniting interests and cooperation between the two separate occupants of Hamm-SĂźd. The long-term vision for this concept is that, with a cohesive community, the future development of the area can happen with more participation, creating an innovative sub-center for the city, with a self-sustaining solution in terms of energy.

FINAL THESES, 9TH & 10TH SEMESTERS

The Fringe of the City | FINAL THESES FAU USP | 2013 | INDIVIDUAL | URBAN DESIGN | BAIRRO DO RECIFE - RECIFE, BRAZIL The project proposes a more democratic urban transformation to maintain the existing population and increase the capacity of creating new activities. This intention includes income generation, slum upgrading and the maximum use of urban infrastructure, besides the creation of new public spaces for cultural and environmental use. The urban mobility plan prioritize pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, especially for metropolitan waterway transportation, in order to oppose to the individual motorized transport that is current privileged in the city‘s transportation system. The new interventions do not impact the existing landscape, through a connection between the old and the new. The relationship between the city and the water is really important, because the existing urban barrier and sewage deposit. has to acquire a new function of connection, and public space.

ACADEMIC WORK, 9TH SEMESTER

Jardim Jaqueline | FAU USP | 2013 | GROUP | URBAN DESIGN | SLUM URBANIZATION - SĂƒO PAULO, BRAZIL From the analysis of the situation of the informal settlement Jardim Jaqueline, held in participatory process with its residents, the group created general guidelines, Afterwards we designed a model of action, showing how the desired character and the feasibility of the project would improve the physical structure of the slum, as well as the establishment of a better quality of life. In the case of the streets, in order to prioritize pedestrians, it was decided to create sharedstreets in order to take advantage of every space in the street. The proposal also includes the organization of parking spaces, implementation of bins, planting vegetation, etc. Removals of parts of the slum took place in order to create more space for housing, urban equipment and squares. Close to the stream a ramp shaped square supports the flood control during the rainy season. The housing potential increased by 50% in area with the new social housing proposed.

Quiet Life in the Center | FAU USP | 2012 | GROUP | SOCIAL HOUSING| BAIRRO DA LUZ - SĂƒO PAULO, BRAZIL The project is inserted in a historical block of SĂŁo Paulo. Therefore it contains some important heritages. Altought it was needed to create many social houses, it was managed to crontrol the height of the building to create a better realation to the urban landscape. The highest buildings were placed further away from the Tiradentes Avenue to go unnoticed while maintaining the historical landscape appearance. In addition, there are buildings of up to eight floors, but they appear to be lower because of the internal spaces that are all leveled by courtyards in the lower elevation. There are five entries to the inside squares created in the project, like one near to the day care, because it serves as the entrance to a square that is safe and quiet place for children to play with their parents after leaving the class, and another is a great access to a central square, which can house fairs, exhibitions and other activities.

EXTRACURRICULAR WORK, 6TH SEMESTER

Residence Ituverava | INDEPENDENT WORK | 2010 | INDIVIDUAL | RESIDENTIAL| ITUVERAVA, SP, BRAZIL The project tries to take advantage of every space, avoiding areas of unused corridors, and get better lighting and ventilation. At the same time, a formal simplicity is sought that meets practicality with the duties performed within the housing. To create a flexible space there are gardens between the living-room and kitchen. Those gardens can be an extension of this social area, especially because of the glass facade which can be all opened up. Therefore, there is no clear separation between inside and outside, and this reinforces the aspect of a coexistence of living in the interior and exterior spaces at the same time There are three bedrooms, with an own bathroom, which are located to the most intimate area, to create more privacy. Related to this private area it was created a small garden with fruit trees and comfortable benches

COMPETITION

Três Estações | FIRST PLACE| 2014 | GROUP | URBAN DESIGN| BROOKLIN - SÃO PAULO, SP BRAZIL The proposal to revitalize the area surrounding the Berrini train station contains a strategy of Placemaking concepts and Active Design. Therefore, it was proposed to separate the intervention into phases, which makes room for dialogue with the society about the changes to be made. First, it is proposed temporary interventions that expose solutions to the conflict between cars and pedestrians, or exposed wiring, lack of trees on sidewalks, ect. Furthermore, it is expected that the interaction of people and their feedback can qualify the project to other more definitive level, adapting the region‘s infrastructure and connecting the different modes of transportation. Finally, it is expected that this new process of dialogue and transparency can create a scenario to negotiate the renegaded private spaces such as idle lots and fenced or precarious areas such as slums and propose changes to create a more multifunctional space, higher quality , vitality and safety.

Museum Expansion | HONORABLE MENTION | 2013 | GROUP | PROJETAR.ORG 002 COMPETITION | JARDIM EUROPA - SÃO PAULO, SP, BRAZIL The project is on a plot adjacent to the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture (MuBE) and the Image and Sound Museum (MIS). Therefore, the mutual connection is sought of all the museums through this Annex. The main elements of Paulo Mendes da Rocha‘s project directed the proposal as a central exhibition square and the program insertion as a construction of this landscape, enphasized by a major element as a landmark. The Foyer has a double central role in the proposal. On the one hand, it gives direct access to the exhibition galleries, on the other, works as an event space that can be extended by the inner square. The cafe is diametrically opposed to the exhibition complex, as it has a character of articulating the street and the square, the outside and the inside, the city and the equipment.
