Refreshers here We go again... Malika Kingston, Fresh Network Intern writes:
R
efreshers week at Roehampton University is a time where we here at the RSU like to introduce ourselves to the incoming international students, and remind returning students of all the amazing things we have to offer them. Here is what there is to look forward to during this years refreshers week. - Monday 16th January Refreshers fair - Get down to Monte Hall, Union Square and the Student Life Office from 12pm. Meet students that are involved in societies and get involved yourself. Also visit Growhampton’s mini Market Day Extravaganza at Froebel. The Union Bar will be open serving food and drinks. Grand- Enjoy our monthly trip to Clapham Grand. Buses with take you there and bring you back to the University. - Tuesday 17th January Puppy Room- Who doesn’t love puppies!? From 11am – 3pm go to Olive Garnet to unwind with puppies. This requires a booking, so look out for our online launch.
Radio- If you enjoy entertainment and radio and would like to get involved with the University radio station, head over to the RSU building from 12pm – 2pm to learn a few things about the station Secret Cinema- Come and relax back after the winter break with an exclusive film screening in Monte Hall from 8.30pm, with pizza and drinks provided, tickets are available online!
Karaoke at 8pm in the Union Bar always brings in the crowds. What’s your go to song? - Friday 20th January Bop in Monte Hall! Tying up the week. Always a classic night with friends and lasting memories.
- Wednesday 18th January Societies will be having their taster sessions on this day, so why not try something completley new this term? ROEHAMPTON
FEEDBACK
FORTNIGHT 23RD JAN - 3RD FEB
This is your chance to improve your course and the University for the rest of your time at Roehampton, for students coming after you and to improve the reputation of your degree – something which will proudly follow you for the rest of your life. Your feedback matters and it is what drives change and has a positive impact on the lives of students. There are tonnes of brilliant examples on changes that have been made because of students voicing their opinions.
4
There will be pods scattered all around campus where you can grab a drink, have a snack and chat to the fantastic student volunteers who will be encouraging you all to fill in the survey, and talk to you about why it matters. Keep an eye out for the biggest campaign of the year (although I will be surprised if you miss it!) running from the 23rd January until the 3rd February. We want your opinion!

Marie Johansen, VP Education writes:
Unlike module evaluations, which gives more of a snapshot or is a way to discuss individual issues that have gone wrong, this is meant to be an overall look at how your time has been so far. It intends to talk about everything that has happened, and how you genuinely feel about University, so please be honest, because this will be read and it will matter.

Let’s Celebrate Sexuality Our 4th month Leah Stone writes:
January is Let’s Celebrate Sexuality month and it promises to be one of the most fun and flamboyant celebrations of them all. We will be hosting Roehampton Pride Week for the second year in a row, including a Pride March across campus and Rainbow Bop! 2016 was a year of major ups and

downs for the LGBTQ+ community. The shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando was one of the biggest tragedies we as a community have ever seen, Trump’s successful election campaign has caused immense fear throughout the LGBTQ+ community and still across the globe people are being persecuted because of their sexuality and/or gender. Every year reveals more to fight for. Which is why it’s still important to celebrate who we are, the right to love and to be who we want to be. We as a community are known for our celebrations, and you are all invited! Coming together and supporting each other this month is a great start to 2017 and I hope you all have a wonderful year!
Elections Q&A With George and Marie
George Cole and Marie Johansen answer some of our burning election questions:
W
e asked the officers a few quick questions about why they ran in the elections and what they have gained from their time at the RSU.
1. WHY DID YOU WANT TO RUN IN THE ELECTIONS AT ROEHAMPTON? M: Because I saw so much potential for improvement at a place that had given me so much, but at the same time I did not feel thoroughly supported or represented. I had ideas I wanted to see be implemented, and I felt ready to stand up to leadership and to fight for all my fellow students. G: I wanted to make a change on my college (Whitelands) at first, making sure that students had the best time and then I wanted to make sure all students had the best time, my passion just wanted to reach everyone.
M: It has made me so much more resilient and understanding, both in my personal and professional life. There are so many different kinds of privilege, and it is all about using yours to fight injustice where you can! In many ways, you can say this is where I discovered my own values.
3. WHAT IS THE BEST THING THAT CAME FROM YOU BEING IN THE ELECTIONS? M: Without a doubt, the very best thing about running in the elections are all the new people you speak to. You learn about their concerns, worries and ideas which adds fuel to the fire you’ve got going on inside you already! It is still to this day these students I think about when I struggle for motivation – they keep me going. G: I think the best thing is seeing the people whose lives you change with your work and your help, it is priceless to see students smile who before weren’t and you know you helped to make a difference.
4. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE SOMEONE RUNNING IN THE ELECTIONS? G: I would suggest that just be yourself and give it a go. If you want to help, run campaigns or just feel you have something to offer then run, what is the worst that can happen and you may find you have some talents you didn’t know about. Be true to yourself throughout campaigning and remember to go out and talk to students. M: Focus on the change you wish to see – do not worry about who else is running for the same position or what they are doing. A friendly conversation face to face will always beat the most creative video, so do not feel like you do not have the skills required. This is coming from someone who made all their posters in Paint!
2. HOW DID BEING INVOLVED IN THE ELECTIONS DEVELOP YOU AS A PERSON? G: Being involved in the elections allowed to me find parts of myself that I didn’t know I had. Being confident on stage, going out and speaking to people I had never met and holding events for hundreds of people. All of these things I never thought I would ever do, only became possible due to being an officer.
