Women’s leadership conference Not one to miss

Marie Johansen, VP Education writes:

Roehampton Students’ Union is thrilled to invite all self-defining women to the first ever Women’s Leadership Conference held here at the University! The event is aimed at all those interested in seeing leadership opportunities for women enhanced – in all aspects of their lives. WLC 2017 will examine how female leaders, at any grade, can enhance their skills to become the leader they aspire to be! Here at the University, we are very proud to report that around 70% of our students are female. However, there is still a gap in representation of the genders on various boards and committees, including the Students’ Union. In order to inspire more self-defining women to go for leadership roles, or develop the ones they already hold in their personal and/or professional lives, we believe it is absolutely necessary to engage and inspire with workshops, speakers and reflectional exercises. To be a leader simply means that you do not remain silent,

and to realise that we are all leaders in our own right. Building a community of self-defining women who fight on all levels to dismantle structures by learning to look around you for inspiration is a way towards creating a truly equal society. The conference aims to discuss issues around gender inequality in several different areas, ranging from why there is a need to represent the under-represented, understanding and developing your leader identity and how to stay resilient in the face of everyday sexism. Alongside this, external and internal guests will tell their stories and open up for questions from the audience. In a traditionally male dominated society, women are constantly asked to ‘soften their image’ and to apologise when faced with challenging confrontations. Female behaviour will often be labelled as arrogant or aggressive, whilst the same behaviour from a male counterpart may be seen as assertive. Sign up to the Women’s Leadership Conference 2017 at:

roehamptonstudent.com/wlc and discover your own values, leadership identity and help create unity at Roehampton.

because you make us tick George Cole Writes:

March is Let’s Celebrate Our Students Month, a chance for our amazing and inspiring students to love themselves and the people around them! We have a massive calendar of events aimed at making you feel special, loved and proud of yourself, while also remembering the important messages of self-love and self-care. These

include sexual health guidance and promotion, a short campaign around body image, loads of destress events and some amazing chances to raise money for charity. It looks certain to be an hugely rewarding period! Did I mention it happens to be our RSU Elections? Keep your eyes out for that! In March we are running a week long campaign around sexual health, making sure all of our Roehampton students understand

and are aware of some of the risks around sexual intercourse and activity. L.U.S.H week (learning and understanding sexual health) is aimed at teaching students to be mindful when it comes to sex, not stopping any fun, but just to raise the awareness of STI’s and how they can be avoided. We will be promoting our free condoms and tampon service while also having some great free sexual health checks around campus. Be SAFE!

Varsity #roe

Charlotte Caidan, Sport Roehampton CoPresident writes:

The thing everyone loves about Varsity is how in just one day, the many Roehampton Sports teams that we have, can showcase what they’ve worked so hard for over the course of the year. This being the Fifth Annual Varsity, with

already three wins under our belt, is looking to be bigger and better than ever. All of our players are as passionate as the next about the sport they have chosen to compete in and what gives us even more of the will to win is our amazing spectators who come to support not just one of our teams, but all of them on this day. Not enough can be said about the unity of Roehampton on Varsity day, which will be held on the 29th

March this year, so to celebrate each and everyone’s success on a day filled with blood, sweat and tears, the Varsity after party is definitely one to remember. Our rivalry with BUCS New University is one that brings all of Roey to stand together and win together. Although we didn’t win last year (we had to give them one didn’t we!?), we will bring home the trophy to its original place with all the other Roehampton sports teams victories by its side. We’re ready, are you?

Think Global will bring to Roehampton two visiting food producers from Zaytoun, and Veena Nabar, a researcher based in India who has made a short film about co-operatives and coconut growing in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. You will get the opportunity to meet them at our Market Day Extravaganza on the 2nd March and to hear about their experiences of how Fairtrade and co-operatives are empowering local communities in the Hive Café from 12:30pm.

Candidate

Question time where candiadates speak their mind Natasha Cellupica-Towers, Comms intern writes:

Nominations will be closing on the 10th of March and hopefully by now our candidates’ manifestos will be well and truly ready for the 13th of March! On the 16th of March, our very own “Candidate Question Time” will be taking place! Our righthonourable ladies and gentlemen, will be in the spotlight for the first time! They will be required to give a brief, typically 1 minute speech to pitch to our voters, followed by live questions about their manifestos.

Candidates, expect to be asked about your pitch, as well as what you will bring to your role and why you are standing for election. Make sure to prepare a couple of flashy answers and bring along some supporters and you’ll be ready to face the world! Voters, come along and see what our potential leaders have got to offer you! This is your chance to put your questions to our candidates about themselves and their policies as they battle it out for your vote! Question Time will take place of the 16th of March in Monte Hall at 5.30pm. Come along, grab a drink and get involved in the future of the Student Union!
