Chairman’s Message
Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends,
As we draw 2024 to a close, I reflect on (and invite you to join me in reflecting) a year of incredible milestones, generosity, and camaraderie within the Lighthouse Club community.
This year has been filled with memorable events that have united our current members and supporters along with other colleagues in the industry. Since our last edition, recent regional events have included the Annual Dinners in Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Singapore, the Macau Annual Golf Day, the ever-popular Hong Kong Curry Club, and even a topical session, by my local branch in Singapore, on data centre engineering and construction.
Beyond the social and networking opportunities, we have managed to raise praiseworthy sums of money to support our continuing efforts towards ‘Allis cum Humanitate’, our motto of Consideration for Others. Our mission to assist construction industry professionals and their families remains at the core of what we do, such as the continued offering of the Lighthouse Club International Medical Benefits Program, administered by Mr. Seng Ch’ng. This initiative, which offers competitive medical insurance options to both individual and corporate members, reflects our commitment to providing meaningful benefits to our membership community.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge some of our larger corporate members, whose significant contributions amplify our impact. Gold members like MTR Corporation Limited and Kroll, alongside Silver members such as BKAsiaPacific Limited and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP, play an essential role in advancing our mission. We welcome more likeminded companies to join us, so we may continue to achieve our objectives locally, regionally and internationally.
A little request from me as I come towards the end of this Chairman’s message, if you know anyone in a jurisdiction where there is not currently a LHC branch (for example Japan, Korea, or Indonesia), and we can help them kickstart the formation of a committee, please reach out to us.
To every member and supporter, thank you for your generosity and dedication. Whether through your participation in events, contributions to fundraising, or support for new initiatives, you help contribute to the backbone of our success.
As we look forward to 2025, I am confident that, together, we will continue to strengthen our community and make a meaningful difference to our industry and the lives of those we support.
I look forward to meeting those of you who will be around for the Singapore gettogether on the 19th of December--and would love to hear your ideas for how we can take Lighthouse Club International to greater heights in 2025.
Wishing you a joyful and prosperous year ahead!

RECORD-BREAKING MOP 300,000 RAISED AT LIGHTHOUSE CLUB MACAU
Lighthouse Club – Macau (LCM), was founded in 2005 and has been holding Annual Golf Days since 2015 as part of our fund raising for the LCM Benevolent Fund. Other fund-raising activities include memberships, sponsorships, one-off donations, monthly get-togethers with lucky draw prizes.
Our Golf Days have always been well supported, with no shortage of sponsors, and golf teams always ready to take part in the tournament and fulfilling the Lighthouse Club aims of supporting the construction industry worldwide, through the promotion of good fellowship among its members and the provision of charitable assistance to distressed persons within the industry. 100% of all donations received go to helping those most in need, which in Macau means supporting the next of kin of people who are seriously injured or die as a result of fatal accidents. Such accidents are not limited to construction site accidents and may involve related accidents away from the site.
Tong Lei have participated in all 10 of the Lighthouse Macau Golf Days. It’s always a great sporting day and fun to meet old and new friends. We would like to say thank you to all of the Lighthouse Club Macau Committee and other people involved over all these years in organising such a good event. We will continue to support the Club and look forward to more events to help bond together all related members in the construction field of Macau.
Ronald Chan, Project Director, Tong Lei Engineering & Construction Co Ltd
I’m excited to share that we have supported Lighthouse Club Macau for many years and have secured 1st place at the LCM Annual Golf Day for the past 4 consecutive years. This achievement reflects our commitment to excellence and camaraderie within the construction industry.
The Lighthouse Club Macau plays a crucial role in providing support for families in the case of construction accidents, ensuring that those in our industry are cared for during challenging times. We invite you to join us in supporting this meaningful cause. Together, we can make a difference.
Harry Lai, CEO, Lai Si Construction
Over the years, LCM has made donations of around MOP 4.6 million (HKD 4.5million) to the next of kin involving 91 serious injuries or fatal accidents.
Lighthouse Club – Macau held their 10th Annual Golf Day on the afternoon of Friday 25 October 2024, at Macau Golf and Country Club. The Texas Scramble tournament was well supported with 19 teams comprising 76 players participating. With a typhoon in the vicinity of Macau and Hong Kong we were lucky that the
weather was good and not humid, but it was windy as the effects of typhoon Trami were felt, which tested the players.
Our thanks go to Min Da Construction & Engineering Co. Ltd. (Min Da), for their extremely generous sponsorship of this event. Min Da’s sponsorship included the after-golf dinner. Over the years, Min Da has been a very generous sponsor of Lighthouse Club – Macau.
For the first time in our Golf Day history, we had a Hole-in-One sponsor. Our thanks go to BMW Macau for offering a BMW i4 car to the first player to hit a Hole-in-One. Unfortunately, no one was successful, although Maggie Chan did hit the flag on hole 6, but the golf ball fell outside the hole. However, Maggie did win a limited-edition presentation of two BMW racing car models as a consolation which was also provided by our sponsor BMW Macau.
Athena Lao, CEO, San Fong Seng Construction & Engineering Co Ltd commented:
“It was our great pleasure to sponsor the Lighthouse Golf Tournament 2024. As I remember, we, SFS Group has been sponsoring this event for 9 years since 2015. I still remember that the first golf tournament I joined on 16th Oct 2015, and this was the first golf tournament I had ever joined. I started to learn golf 3 months before this tournament. I surprisingly got the award of "Nearest to the Centre Line". I love so much every Lighthouse golf tournament since it always motivates any type of golfer, no matter they are well experienced or beginners. This year, a "BMW hole in one" prize has been sponsored which makes everyone get more excited. We see the improvement of organisation in Lighthouse Club every year. We thank the Macau committee of Lighthouse Club for planning such a great event for all golfers every year. And we appreciate to give a continuous support to the club.”
Jason Li, Director of Zeko Construction and Engineering Company Limited also had a few kind words to say:
“Another year of a fantastic Lighthouse Golf tournament. This year Zeko sponsored the 6th Hole where BMW also sponsored the Hole-in-One prize. The Man himself, Mr Nick Lo (Founder of Zeko), was handing out Golf Ball prizes and raising up to MOP 8,500 alone, and the one and only Team Zeko which consists of Jason Li (Director of Zeko), Neil Stockley (Team Captain), Richard Coumbe (Sponsor of Hole 16) and our Star Player Greg Meares had a fantastic time.
Lighthouse Golf day was such a wonderful day and for a Great Cause.”
We at Jardine Engineering Corporation(JEC) , were honoured to support the Lighthouse Club Annual Golf Day by sponsoring the best gross score competition and putting a JEC golf team together for such a great cause. It brings us immense joy to see the community come together for a day of sportsmanship and charity. Our company takes great pride in contributing to initiatives that make a positive impact, and this event exemplifies the spirit of giving back. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, LCM organisers and supporters who have made this event a success. Together, we are making a difference, not just on the course but also in the lives of those who will benefit from this meaningful event. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of this wonderful occasion.
Maggie Chan, Manager, JEC Macao.
ITT Strokers, Alan Duffy
It was with great pleasure that Top Builders Group participated in the Lighthouse Club Golf Day. This year, we have put in two teams and sponsored the 15th hole. It was great fun not just to see old friends, but also make new ones, on what was a wonderful day on the course.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all persons involved in organizing and supporting this event with their own spare time and efforts. We hope the funds raised through this meaningful occasion will make a difference to the lives of those who are in need.
Carlos Tang, Business Development Director, Top Builders Group
Once the golf teams had finished their matches, towards 6:00pm, they gradually made their way from the golf club in Coloane to the Londoner Grand Royal Pool on the Cotai Strip, to be joined by non-golfing dinner guests. I30 people joined the dinner.
Before the dinner, Lighthouse Club – Macau Chairman, Keith Buckley, welcomed everyone and thanked all those involved in the events, including the Sponsors, the event organisers, and the Londoner Grand Team, for making the event a great success.
The BBQ dinner started around 7:30pm and comprised a grand array of salads/starters, grilled seafood and meat and desserts, cooked on location by the Londoner Grand kitchen team. Free flow drinks ensured a very good atmosphere.
Once everyone was settled down and enjoying the food, event organisers, Jose Isles and Kenneth Chun, proceeded to announce the winners of the golf competition awards, the lucky draw winners and the silent auction winners.
Lighthouse Club Macau owes thanks to all the generous sponsors and to the Lucky Draw and
Auction sponsors Zhi Fu Engineering Co. Ltd, Londoner Grand, BMW Macau and Kenneth Chun.
• Min Da sponsored the Best Net Score competition. The winners were ITT Strokers, with Aristocrat in second place, SJ Synergy in third, and Legal Eagles in fourth.

A Golf Day doesn’t just happen. It requires a lot of planning and organisation and thanks go to Jose Isles, Kenneth Chun, Irene Lei and the Top Builders team and Lighthouse Club Committee members and helpers for their invaluable help in arranging the tournament.
The tournament raised over MOP 275,000 for the LCM Benevolent Fund and was the highest amount that we have raised.
Luckily, we had no rain and the weather during the dinner was perfect. At around 10:30pm the guests started to leave having enjoyed a great golf tournament and dinner.
Macau Benevolence
In September we had good and bad news. The good news relates to a previously reported non-resident worker who was involved in what was thought to be a life-threatening accident, but last week, the injured person had improved significantly and he returned to China. As a result, the Benevolent Fund Donation was not made.
The bad news was that a fatal accident occurred on 30 September in a Cotai Hotel. A 59-year-old non-resident male worker suffered a head injury after falling from height and died after being sent to hospital. The worker fell from a mechanical room on the first floor to the ground. The worker was wearing safety belt but had not anchored it to any fixed structure.
He leaves behind a wife, two daughters and a son, a reminder of how sudden and impacting construction accidents can be.
In 2024 to date, our Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund has donated MOP320,000 to the Next of Kin of the deceased workers involved in four fatal accidents.
Lighthouse Club Hong Kong Branch
CONTRACTORS DINNER & SAFETY AWARDS 2024
The Hong Kong Branch held its 27th Contractors Dinner and Safety Awards at City Hall on Friday 27 September 2024. It was great to come together again, and we had 400 guests together celebrating and recognizing the achievement of those in the frontline of our industry.
The dinner, as with last year, has a ‘Spring Dinner’ feel with the excitement of meeting old friends and colleagues again and welcoming many new faces and new contractors. We thank our sponsors for supporting the event, for without them the evening would not have been possible. The awards are highly acclaimed, and we greatly appreciate the in person support from the Development Bureau, Highways Department, Civil Engineering and Development Department and Labour Department at the awards which ensures the winners are recognized at the highest level and promotes the important work of the Lighthouse Club. Also Fay Sui from the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims was our VIP.

There were 323 entries for the Safe Foreman Award, 17 for the Construction Safety Practitioner Award, 21 for the Project Leader Award, 20 for Safe Sub-Contractors Award and 28 for Safe Project Team Award.
As always, the nominations were of a high standard, and we are incredibly grateful for the assistance provided by the panels of judges. This year’s judges included Members of the Lighthouse Club Hong Kong Branch’s Safety Sub-committee and representatives from the Society of Registered Safety Officers (SROS), the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health
Association (HKOSHA) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
The Committee of the Lighthouse Club Hong Kong Branch would like to thank the following people and organisations for their support and ensuring that the Contractors Dinner and Safety Awards retains its position as the largest event in the Club’s calendar.
SAFE FOREMAN AWARD CHAMPION
Awards like the Safe Foreman Award not only recognize individual achievements but also serve as powerful motivators for all construction professionals to continuously strive for excellence in safety and to cultivate a robust safety culture within their organisations.
”
Receiving this award is a significant milestone for me and I feel immense pride in several key achievements. Firstly, I am proud of the safety culture that I help foster within the team. By prioritising safety training and open communication, we significantly reduce incidents and create an environment where every worker feels empowered to speak up about safety concerns.
Additionally, I take great pride in the successful implementation of safety protocols and procedures that not only comply with regulations but also exceed industry standards. This involves meticulous planning, regular safety audits and continuous improvement initiatives that engage the entire workforce.
This award symbolizes the collective achievements of my team. It reflects our commitment to maintaining high safety standards and our success in reducing incidents on site. Knowing that our collaborative efforts have led to a safer work environment is incredibly rewarding.
Finally, I am particularly proud of the strong relationships I build with my team members. By promoting teamwork and collaboration, we not only achieve our safety goals but also enhance overall morale and productivity. The award is a recognition of our collective efforts and it reinforces my commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive work environment for everyone.
Winning the Safe Foreman Award is also a significant achievement for Yee

recognition for the organisation: Enhanced Reputation, Employee Morale, Commitment to Safety Culture, Benchmark for Improvement and Competitive Advantage.
In short, the award reinforces Yee Fai’s reputation as a company that prioritises safety and values the well-being of its employees. It demonstrates that the company values and acknowledges the hard work of its employees, which can lead to increased job satisfaction and retention. It serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols and encourages all employees to remain vigilant and proactive in their safety practices. It motivates the company to continue improving safety measures, investing in training, and striving for even higher standards in
Peer recognition often leads to increased credibility and respect within the industry. It can open doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and professional growth, as others are more likely to seek out individuals who have been acknowledged for their contributions. This can also enhance networking opportunities, allowing for the exchange of ideas and best practices that can further improve our work.
the future. Clients often prefer to work with companies that demonstrate a commitment to safety, which can lead to more business opportunities.
Personally, from my years of working with Yee Fai I have developed and maintained many skills including Leadership, Communication, Technical Knowledge, Problem-Solving, Time Management, Safety Awareness and Experience in Construction Projects. Most important of these is Leadership: a foreman must inspire trust and respect among team members, guiding them through challenges while fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. Effective leadership not only enhances team performance but also contributes to a positive safety culture on the site.
Being recognized by my peers in the industry is incredibly rewarding for several reasons. Not only is it a validation of my hard work and dedication but a recognition of efforts which will inspire others. The setting of benchmarks also encourages others to elevate their own practices to meet or exceed those benchmarks. Together we encourage a safety culture reminding everybody that it is a shared responsibility. In addition, inspiring continuous improvement motivates professionals to seek out training opportunities and implement new safety technologies. My peers and I are building community and collaboration within the industry which enhances safety standards as we all work together to share best practices. And last, but not least, we attract those people who have the same commitment as we do in maintaining the highest of safety standards.
CONSTRUCTION SAFETY PRACTITIONER AWARD
I am deeply honoured to have received the Gold Award, a recognition I never anticipated. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Lighthouse Club Hong Kong and their esteemed panel of judges for considering me a deserving candidate. This prestigious acknowledgment has invigorated my commitment to excellence and motivates me to continue making meaningful contributions to the local safety industry.

GOLD AWARD WINNER
Angbuhang Bashant Sean
Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited
Conversion of 15,000M2 industrial building to modern data centre, Tai Wai
My passion for workplace safety originates from a personal experience involving my father who was injured while working at a construction site in Hong Kong. Because of that experience, I decided to build up my career as a Health and Safety Officer.
I have led numerous safety initiatives on site that have yielded positive results, including reduced incident rates
and improved operational efficiency. One of the most memorable was being part of a hand protection safety campaign at my previous organisation. The campaign was based on an art competition which was carried out by the workers’ children. The competition was widely accepted by the workers and made changes towards the importance of hand safety at work.
To be awarded the Gold Award for Construction Safety Practitioner is special for me since it is one of the highest recognitions presented by an organisation to date. I feel extremely honoured to receive this award especially after going through a very rigorous selection and interview process led by a panel of some of the most esteemed safety leaders in the Hong Kong construction industry.
I believe that winning this award will help my company, Leighton (LCAL), maintain its positive image that demonstrates high calibre compliance and standards of health
& safety at the workplace. I am very motivated to keep safety standards high at all times and to encourage others to do the same.
It is a fantastic feeling to be recognised by my peers at Leighton and from the industry, both at the awards event and afterwards. To be called a role model for young safety professionals is both humbling and gratifying at the same time.
During my time as a Safety practitioner, I have continued to keep learning and to enhance my skills. With the advancement of technologies which are bringing drastic changes to all aspect of our lives, the practices of construction site safety are ever changing as well. I have learned, and keep learning, that soft skills – such as effective communication, leadership, safety awareness, cultural awareness, time management, etc – and the use of technologies are just two of the key areas on which I should keep focusing and keep improving in order to
become an even better site safety practitioner.
These awards help to give individuals a sense of motivation to keep striving to do better. The Lighthouse Club Hong Kong also gives a platform to those safety practitioners, and other awardees, who are not able to compete in other local competitions as their first language is not Chinese. This is another reason why I feel so honoured by the recognition, from work colleagues as well as the Club and judging panel.
I would also like to point out what an important event the Award ceremony was as it was an excellent opportunity for networking with peers and colleagues within the construction industry, sharing experiences and knowledge and meeting old and new connections.
Winning this award has reinvigorated my inner energy to continue excelling in my field.
Gammon is a leading construction and engineering firm with a reputation as the contractor of choice for delivering high-quality projects across China and Southeast Asia.
Headquartered in Hong Kong, Gammon has a diverse range of expertise and extensive experience in the region since 1958. The company is firmly committed to building for a better quality of life and living environment in a safe and sustainable manner.
PROJECT LEADER AWARD
“ ”
Winning the Gold Project Leader Award signifies recognition of effective leadership and a commitment to team success.
As a project director of the Boardwalk Project since its commencement, I am very proud of our Boardwalk project team delivering outstanding safety performances which earned me this Project Leader Award. With 20 years’ experience I am committed to safety and to promoting innovative technologies to enhance safety on a project. I believe in open and effective communication with all workers and I engage with them often, for example, at lunch box meetings, as well as the regular weekly safety inspections.
The project team has continuously fostered a positive, open and sustainable safety culture in the Boardwalk Project. Adopting safe working practices, eliminating risks by alternative designs and methodologies, promoting prompt reporting culture, all such unwavering hard work by the project team have been recognized with some prestigious safety and health awards from the Authorities such as the 30th Considerate Contractors Site Award (Silver in Public Works), 24th Construction Industry Safety Award (Bronze) and now the 2024 Safe Project Leader Gold Award from Lighthouse Club Hong Kong.
This prestigious award can be treated as a recognition of our CIMIC Group’s (parent company of Leighton Asia) ONE Culture. CIMIC Group’s Mission is
“.. to generate sustainable returns for shareholders by delivery projects for our clients while providing safe, rewarding and fulfilling careers for our people.”
The principles of Leighton Asia – Integrity, Accountability, Innovation and Delivery are always my guidance to be a successful Project Leader. The most paramount thing is to underpin these principles by the Safety of our people. In my opinion, hard work and perseverance are essential traits for Project Leaders who not only drive their projects toward success, but also inspire their teams to embrace challenges and strive for excellence.
Maintaining resilience is crucial when we face failures. As a good Project leader, he/she should view failures as opportunities for growth and learning rather than endpoints.
I am proud to share our various Project Safety Innovation solutions which serve as a benchmark as Leighton Asia further enhances our One HSE(Health Safety Environmental) Culture across our projects in Asia.
The key innovations, which have been demonstrated numerous times to different construction organisations, we have delivered on the project include:
Roborigger – which is an innovative device that reduces many of the inherent risks associated with lifting operations. The device removes the requirement for taglines and riggers to control loads, as it can remotely control loads regardless of adverse environmental conditions, such as wind, rain etc.
Underwater drones – which safely conduct underwater inspections and surveys, eliminating the need for highrisk diving works.
The Robotic Life Saver - A remote-controlled rescue device that has revolutionised marine rescue, allowing

rescuers to execute a rapid and effective response from the safety of land.
I fully support the view that the awards we won (Safe Project Team Award and Project Leader Award) do always inspire and motivate the construction professionals, companies and individuals to keep fostering higher standards of site safety and safety culture.
The Lighthouse Club Hong Kong, as a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting safety and wellbeing within the construction industry, plays a vital role in enhancing site safety standards and culture. All the companies having the same mission and vision with the Lighthouse Club, who participated in this meaningful Safety Awards, strive for improvement and enhancement of site safety and culture. Actually, by my observation during the Contactors Dinner on 27 September 2024, I had observed that through this social platform, all the construction professionals came together and shared experiences and supported one another in promoting safety and well-being.
However, the most important thing for me now is to prevent becoming complacent and stuck in the past. On the other hand, I have to focus on the present, maintain a growth mindset and continuously seek improvement. I have to keep encouraging the team and asking them and myself, “How to do better?”
To
do the good job, you
must
first sharpen it. The facilities and environment must be in good condition for all workers.
I am very proud and honoured to win the Gold Award for Project Leader from the Lighthouse Club Hong Kong. I am also most proud that I have a great group of colleagues and a team of strong, cohesive business partners for this project. This is the third safety award I have been presented with this year.

morning assemblies as well as safety inspections. Today, technology makes it easy for us to send a large amount of information very easily to all workers, such as using WhatsApp. But it also means that face-to-face communication between people has become less and less. I therefore believe in holding bi-weekly real risk meetings with frontline workers in order to get their feedback and suggestions.

What makes me a good Project Leader is my attention to detail and to strictly follow processes and procedures, also making sure that others follow my lead. For example, I engaged with both the engineering and frontline teams to strictly follow temporary work control system and to carefully check the safety control measures before the commencement of work. Besides that, I also conducted ad-hoc checking on my own to ensure that finishing is in accordance with design drawings.
Winning this award means that all my efforts and experience are recognised, also my leadership and communication abilities are recognised and applauded.
For my company, Gammon, this is another great achievement and I am so proud to work for this company for many years. For Gammon to win this award means that the clients we work with can have confidence that they are working not only with professionals but also people who are
caring for their workers. Good craftsmanship depends on material, technical craft and working environment and these are all things which are valuable and keep up the quality of our service to our clients.
Recognition by my peers shows that my dedication to the job is one to be proud of and I hope that it inspires them to do the same things. It is great to also be able to be part of the Lighthouse Club Contractors Dinner where the awards are presented and to be recognised by work colleagues, friends and to meet other people from other organisations.
Competitions, like this one, are very important for our construction industry and for the workers who are engaged in the actual work on sites every day. We must make sure that our workers are not only kept safe but learn to adopt the safety practices that we talk about in training sessions and morning assemblies. When we do our safety inspections we must encourage our workers to “You See You Act” and to make sure that wherever they are working they and their colleagues are safe from harm. Our construction industry must continue to recognise the efforts of all workers and the Lighthouse Club Hong Kong does a very good job in making sure this happens. Awards highlight successful safety strategies, safety innovations and initiatives that lead to improved safety outcomes. They serve as a valuable learning resource for other professionals, inspiring them to adopt similar approaches and continuously improve safety practices.
SAFE PROJECT TEAM AWARD
Awards create a healthy sense of competition within the industry. Professionals see the success of their peers and are motivated to step up their game, best enhance safety protocols, and implement best practices to stay competitive and potentially be recognized in the future. ”
Receiving the Safe Project Team Award was a moment of immense pride and validation for our team. This is the recognition of our hard work in the project and the most satisfying aspect of this achievement was not just the recognition itself, but the knowledge that our efforts had a tangible impact on the safety and well-being of our community.
Building and managing a safety team comprising members from different disciplines is challenging but we successfully navigated this with a few key strategies. Clear, open and transparent communication channels were
established. Ensuring all team members understood safety protocols and procedures was crucial. Our team encouraged a culture of respect and collaboration as everybody had their unique expertise and perspectives which were recognised and appreciated. Establishing common goals was paramount to achieving a high safety standard as well as educating and training everybody about the different disciplines within the team. We had a strong safety leader who effectively fostered collaboration and resolved conflicts for team success. Regular teambuilding activities were organised

to strengthen relationships and help bridge gaps between different disciplines and encourage a culture of continuous improvement. We regularly evaluated processes, sought feedback from team members and implemented changes to enhance safety practices based on lessons learned and best practices from the construction industry.
Winning the Safe Project Team Award holds profound significance for the team. It serves as a testament to our collective dedication, perseverance and commitment to excellence in promoting safety and well-being. This recognition validates the hard work and innovation that we have poured into the project over the past one year.
This achievement not only acknowledges the exceptional efforts and contributions of our project team but also reflects positively on Leighton Asia as a whole. Winning the award validates our company's commitment to safety, health, innovation and high-quality work. SAFE LARGE SUBCONTRACTOR AWARD
The commitment to protecting life and ensuring a continuous and sustainable safe working environment is essential at every job site. It is a serious and responsible commitment to every worker's family that workers come home with pride.
”
Performing daily safety duties while working on this project is our commitment. We are so proud of working to the best of our ability, focusing not only on our regular safety walks but also on the everyday efforts of everybody that contribute to excellent safety results.
With 20 workers on site, a relatively small number, it might be easy to be not as aware of safety aspects. To prevent this from happening, we have regular, usually weekly, safety walks where all aspects of safety are checked. For example, working in a confined space or working at height. On one of our safety walks we reported on three items which were immediately noted and addressed. Something as simple as a protruding nail can have serious consequences and we are always looking for the smallest of things which could have the biggest impact.
We are very proud of our team that we work well together and look out for
each other. It is important for all of us in Chun Wo, and other companies, that we look after each and every one of us every day.
Winning this award for our team is definitely a great encouragement to all as it confirms the efforts that the whole team has been working well together. Furthermore, we believe that we have created a strong message to others about fostering a safe working environment. Everybody on the team is so happy that we won and were able to celebrate together at the event hosted by Lighthouse Club Hong Kong.
For our company, Chun Wo, to win this award is a point of pride for all employees. Firstly, to have been selected to represent the company made us very proud and then winning the Gold Award was a very satisfying moment. We all know that it serves as a significant encouragement to all Chun Wo employees to continue fostering our strong safety culture
as we owe it to all our employees’ families to make sure they are safe at work all of the time.
Not only is our company proud of us but also our friends and colleagues from other companies. The recognition from our industry peers is definitely a very positive indication of Chun Wo’s commitment to safety. This in turn provides great confidence from our clients and business partners, now and for the future.
The effect of creating a good safety culture is influenced by the competition award, it is not only about standards or regulations but also about the willingness to be a responsible company and to reflect a positive image for the construction industry. It is important for the Lighthouse Club Hong Kong to keep holding these award events and to keep encouraging all of our construction industry to foster the highest standards of safety.
SAFE SME SUBCONTRACTOR AWARD
We were very proud of receiving this Gold Award for Dakin because it demonstrates that we work well with our clients and that they continue to put their trust in us to have further working partnerships into the future.
Some of the most important commitments to safety are being aware from first thing in the morning to the last working hour of staying safe and making the working place safe for all workers. Our slogan is “Work Safely, No Injury” and we are proud of our safety record on this project. Daily morning safety briefings begin the day along with the client’s morning assembly. Then, depending on the work
Dakin Engineering Limited Main Contract Works for Proposed Commercial Development at No. 77 How Ming Street, Commercial Development GOLD AWARD WINNER
to be done we participate in making sure that workers are properly equipped to carry out the work they will be doing such as wearing safety harness for working at height.
During the hot weather we make sure that everybody is well aware of the heat stress promotion and that they are drinking plenty of water and protecting uncovered areas of such as back of neck etc, if working in sun spots.
Other things like regular safety training sessions and good housekeeping, in other words, making sure everybody keeps the construction site clean and tidy with no safety hazards, are important so that we maintain the good relationship with all workers and clients.
To win this Gold Award makes us so proud as a team and it shows appreciation of our contribution, tenure and achievements on site. It is also good for the morale of Dakin employees that we win this award as it shows that we are a company who cares about its workers.

A MEMORABLE EVENING: JAPANESE WHISKEY TASTING AND NETWORKING NIGHT
Hong Kong Young Members and Women in Construction (WIC) came together in a spirited collaboration to host a delightful Japanese whiskey tasting and networking session that celebrated both fine spirits and professional connections. The event unfolded at Leeder Quay, a beautifully unique venue situated on the ground floor of a historical building in Central. Its ultra-high ceilings and homely decor created a welcoming atmosphere, making everyone feel instantly at ease.
Alistar Macdonald from Barely Nectar took the reins in organising an engaging experience tailored for both novices and seasoned whiskey lovers. His presentation covered
the fascinating history of Japanese whiskey, its intricate making process and the marketing and selling that bring this exquisite spirit to life. Alistar enriched the session with personal stories from his own journey in the whiskey industry, sharing the moments that ignited his passion and shaped his career. His heartfelt insights were both touching and inspiring, forging a deep connection with the audience.
Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed the warmth of good company amidst laughter and engaging conversations. Bess, the owner and host of Leeder Quay, ensured that everyone was well-catered to, adding to the homey ambiance of the night. Guests savoured a variety of premium Japanese whiskeys, enhancing their understanding of flavour profiles while enjoying delightful pairings that complemented the tasting experience.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for this unforgettable evening—we appreciate your continuous support and look forward to seeing you at our next event!
A special thank you to Alistar for sharing his expertise and passion, and to Bess for her exceptional hospitality. Together, they helped create a wonderful night that highlighted the power of community and collaboration.
EDUCATION AS WELL AS SOCIALISING IN MACAU THIS AUTUMN
The September event was held on Wednesday, 11 September at the Coloane Yacht Club and sponsored by our loyal supporters San Fong Seng Group and AB Builders Group Ltd.
We had a good turnout including visitors from Hong Kong.
Prior to the gathering, Denis Branthonne, Co-Founder and CEO of Novade Solutions, gave a very interesting presentation with insights into AI in relation to construction site safety.
It’s a familiar scenario in the aftermath of an accident: workers and supervisors recognise that there were early indicators of danger, which went unnoticed amidst the daily tasks. This realisation often summarised as “the writing is on the wall” reveals a significant gap in safety management—the inability to spot and act on these early warning signs in a timely manner. Construction sites are characterised by abundant, comple x data that are challenging to interpret, making them ideal candidates for AI applications. However, a known obstacle until recently has been the non-digitised nature of such data within the construction industry. Novade, has been collaborating with contractors for several years to digitise their processes, thereby creating a rich repository of information. In 2022, they started to explore the potential of using AI to predict accidents. This has led to an exciting result: a tool that can help anticipate and mitigate risks before they escalate.
AI helps human decision but does not replace human judgment. The advancement of AI is as promising as it is critical, necessitating responsible use and discernment. Novade’s model, despite predicting 70% of accidents and identifying highrisk sites, is not foolproof - it does not account for the remaining 30%. A low-risk prediction by the AI doesn›t guarantee the absence of accidents; risk, by nature, holds the possibility of the unforeseen.
AI related safety solutions are increasingly being used in Hong Kong, promoted by Government Authorities and no doubt Macao will follow.
For more information go to the link: https://www.novade.net
Novade is based in Singapore and is represented in Macao by CESL Asia Ltd.
The October gathering was held on 9 October in the Ritz Carlton Bar on 51, Galaxy. We had a first time sponsor this month – Northcroft Macau Ltd, who specialise in Cost Management, Management Consultancy and Project Management.
Chairman Keith Buckley welcomed the Northcroft team and introduced Northcroft’s Managing Director, Kent Kam, who gave a presentation about Northcroft’s history, which goes back 180 years, and details of projects in Hong Kong and Macau.
We had a good turnout of around 100 guests and a very enjoyable evening was held. Northcroft generously donated Lucky draw prizes.
CELEBRATING AUSTRALIA ARBITRATION WEEK
The Queensland Chapter was honoured to support and facilitate an insightful and engaging event during this year’s Australian Arbitration Week held in Brisbane in October, hosted at the offices of Corrs Chambers Westgarth.
The event was a thought-provoking debate on the topic that “Australia should have a more significant presence in Asia as an International Arbitration Centre,” with four distinguished and diverse speakers who presented compelling and contrasting views on the topic.
On the Affirmative team, the debate began with the first speaker, The Hon James Allsop AC, former Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, whose chambers are located in the Sydney Arbitration Chambers in Australia and Atkin Chambers in the United Kingdom. Alongside him was The Hon Wayne Martin AC KC, former Chief Justice of Western Australia, whose chambers are in Perth at Francis Burt Chambers Australia and 39 Essex Chambers in the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Singapore. Both speakers passionately argued that Australia is well-positioned to expand its influence and significance in Asia’s arbitration landscape.
The Negative team featured Penny Martin, Counsel in the Singapore office of Three Crowns LLP, and Shashank Garg, Independent Counsel, Chambers of Shashank Garg in India. Both speakers also stated compelling arguments, concluding that Australia has challenges to overcome if it is to be regarded
as a key presence in Asia as an International Arbitration Centre.
The Lighthouse Club Australia Queensland Chapter extends heartfelt thanks to the following individuals and organisations for their invaluable time, generosity, and support in making this event possible:
• Our distinguished speakers: The Hon. James Allsop AC, The Hon. Wayne Martin AC KC, Penny Martin and Shashank Garg
• Todd Spiller from Corrs Chambers Westgarth for hosting and sponsoring the event, as well as Yazeed Abdelhadi and Rimkus for their co-sponsorship
• Sean Brady from Brady Heywood for expertly moderating the debate
• The Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA)
• Society of Construction Law Australia for their support as a partnering organisation
The event was also a wonderful opportunity for several of our National Committee members to meet in person, some for the first time!
Thank you to everyone who contributed and attended for making this event such a resounding success!

Highlights from Manila
The Lighthouse Club Manila has always prioritised fostering connections and camaraderie within the construction industry, and our recent social events have been a testament to this mission.
August Events: We kicked off the month with an exciting Curry Night in Flavours in Makati that brought members together for delicious food and lively conversations. Later in August, we hosted an engaging Quiz Night at Catalogue in Makati, where teams showcased their knowledge and competed in a fun-filled evening of friendly rivalry.
September Social Night: Our Social Night at Antipodean in Makati provided a perfect setting for networking, laughter, and camaraderie. Members gathered, shared stories, and strengthened professional and personal connections within the community.
October Cancellation: Unfortunately, our October Social Night had to be cancelled due to the impact of Typhoon Kristine (international name Trami). The safety of our members and their families was our top priority during this challenging time. We extend our thoughts to those affected and look forward to coming back stronger for future events.
Upcoming Events: Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that our Annual Ball will take place in November at the Fairmont Hotel in Makati. Additionally, we are planning a Christmas Social gathering in December. We will provide updates on these events in the next edition of the Lighthouse Magazine.
Supporting Our Scholars: Recently, we held an Assembly of our Scholars to explain updated guidelines on the financial assistance to individual scholars enrolled in our scholarship program, following a harmonization effort by the scholarship committee.
Beyond our social events, we continue our commitment to supporting students through financial assistance. We are proud to have enrolled six new scholars and, as we anticipate more scholars graduating, we will actively seek out students in need of financial support.
We remain committed to creating more opportunities for our members to connect, relax, and support one another as we continue navigating the year. Keep an eye out for updates on upcoming events, and we hope to see everyone soon!
