Photographer: Dianna Snape The shortlist for the World Architecture Festival Awards 2018 – the world’s biggest architectural awards programme – has been released ahead of the 11th edition of the awards in Amsterdam later this year. Up for an award are 536 projects from 81 different countries, selected from more than 1,000 entries. Chinese architectural and engineering practices submitted the most projects of any country, up by 76 per cent on last year, reflecting the level of development in East Asia and Oceania, with Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore also ranking highly. “This has been a terrific year for the WAF Awards, reaching our largest entry total to date.This has not resulted in any decrease in quality, if anything the opposite. It has been extremely gratifying to review entries from more than 81 different countries and note the way in which architects are absorbing lessons from contemporaries across the world,” says WAF programme director Paul Finch. www.worldarchitecturefestival.com
HONGKONG LAND ROLLS OUT RED CARPET FOR BEIJING LAUNCH
The opening of the new flagship hotel for the City of Dreams in Macau in June – the Morpheus – was celebrated by many, including Hong Kong architects Leigh & Orange. The building is the world’s first high-rise supported by a freeform exoskeleton steel structure. The design is enlivened by two sky bridges and protected from the elements by five different glazing systems and a unique non-repetitive double-curved aluminium cladding system. The complexity of the project and its enabling works required the involvement and co-ordination of eight firms of designers based in five countries. As the project’s executive architect, Leigh & Orange steered the design and statutory coordination for this multi-disciplinary project, documentation of the hotel tower, international restaurants, retail outlets and retail street, as well as supporting staff facilities. “The most challenging aspect of the project was the orchestration of the many different designers, with differing visions all being weaved into a unique building form. We’d like to think of ourselves as the conductor,” said Leigh & Orange managing director Ivy Lee. www.leighorange.com

An A$1-billion development in inner Sydney was launched in June by property developer Crown Group. Eastlakes Live by Crown Group aims to set a new standard for retail excellence with two major supermarkets, a restaurant promenade, street cafes, a medical centre, as well as landscaped gardens and children’s play areas. “Eastlakes Live presents Sydney’s new east, a way of future living in a lifestyle destination like never before,” says Crown Group chairman Iwan Sunito. “With Eastlakes Live, we are defining a vibrant community, a modern urban hub of Sydney, connecting people together to create a great place where residents can live, shop and play all in one place.” Crown sales director Roy Marcellus said the demand for apartments has seen more than A$134 million of potential sales. ATELIER BRÜCKNER SERVES UP THE MACALLAN EXPERIENCE NEAT
The new distillery and visitor experience of the world’s leading single malt whisky The Macallan opened last month in Speyside, Scotland. Designed by Atelier Brückner, the exhibition is in the form of a guided tour through the new distillery. The relatedness to the authentic location as well as the long distilling experience and the perfect maturation of the single malt whiskies are expressed in staged spaces dedicated to specific themes. The highpoint of the Whisky Experience explains the production stages and components that lead to the legendary whisky are presented in settings as immersive experiences. The three installations explain the importance of wood for maturation in the oak barrel, the magic of blending and the composition of the whisky and the whisky itself. BENOY TAKES TIANJIN SHOPPERS FOR A WALK IN THE (CITY) PARK
The Luneng CC Plaza Shopping Mall in Tianjin’s Nankai district features interiors by noted architectural firm Benoy. The 120,000m2 retail scheme celebrated its grand opening earlier this year. The retail development by Benoy sits within the wider 550,000m2 Luneng CC Plaza mixed-use development that includes a high-end hotel, boutique shopping street, five residential towers, a Grade-A office tower with six-storey shopping mall and two underground metro stations. “We wanted Luneng CC Plaza Shopping Mall to be a place of recreation for the community. A space where visitors can enjoy entertainment, retail, art, activities and great food with their friends – all under one roof,” said Benoy director Simon Wong. The scheme’s approach is brought to life by two thematic areas: the Spring Park and the Winter Park. The Spring Park defines the main six-storey atrium and brings Tianjin’s outdoors into the development with neutral wood detailing and bursts of decorative planting. OASIA HOTEL DOWNTOWN WINS ‘BEST TALL BUILDING WORLDWIDE’ The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in the United States has named Oasia Hotel Downtown the “Best Tall Building Worldwide” at the conclusion of its 16th Annual CTBUH Awards Programme in Chicago. The Singaporean hotel was chosen from among the four regional Best Tall Building winners, including American Copper Buildings, the Oasia Hotel Downtown, the Best Tall Building Asia and Australasia, The Silo from Europe, and Zeitz MOCAA, Best Tall Building Middle East and Africa. The striking Oasia Hotel Downtown stands out amongst the grey and blue high-rises of Singapore with its plant-covered façade of red and green, which connects to the green of the cityscape. Landscaping is used extensively as an architectural surface treatment, and forms a major part of the development’s material palette, with 54 species of plants climbing along the aluminium mesh façade screen. “This project won not only because it incorporates 60 stories of green walls along the exterior but because of its significant commitment to communal space. The tower has given over 40 percent of its volume to open air communal terraces in the sky,” said CTBUH executive director Antony Wood. www.ctbuh.org

WILKINSONEYRE LISTED TWICE FOR RIBA AWARDS IN BRITAIN
The Royal Institute of British Architects National Awards 2018 includes a shortlist of the best major public and commercial projects from that market for the past 12 months. It featured two projects from WilkinsonEyre: Gasholders London and Graduate Centre for Queen Mary, University of London. WilkinsonEyre completed work on Gasholders London in February, the development consists of 145 apartments and residents’ facilities, within a triplet of refurbished historic gasholder guide frames. The project sits within the wider King’s Cross N1C masterplan, the largest urban development scheme in Europe.The new Graduate Centre for Queen Mary, University of London was opened in June last year. The seven-storey building includes 7,700m² of new learning and teaching space. The Gasholders project went on to claim a National Award 2018. “For over 50 years the RIBA Awards have celebrated the best new buildings, large or small; shining a light on trends in the construction industry, and illustrating why the UK’s architects and architecture have an enviable global reputation,” says RIBA president Ben Derbyshire. www.wilkinsoneyre.com
BROADWAY MALYAN PROMOTES INDIAN LEADERSHIP; ANNOUNCES NEW CHINA WIN
The head of Broadway Malyan’s Indian studio has been promoted to a position on the regional board leading the firm’s Asia-Pacific region. Ankit originally joined the Singapore studio to work on large-scale residential and mixed-use projects, before moving to the firm’s Mumbai office where he has been responsible for Indian operations. “When Ankit moved to Mumbai, the studio was two-years old and in the relatively early stages of building its profile and reputation in the market,” says Asia-Pacific chairman Ian Simpson.“His promotion to board director recognises his efforts and particularly the ways in which he has represented the best interests of the Mumbai studio at both a local and regional level since his move there. In China, Broadway Malyan has recently been appointed to design a new school that will combine three international education brands on one campus. Nord Anglia Wenzhou Oujiangkou is a 55,253m2 school that will cater for 1,926 students aged from three to 18. It will be located on Lingkun Island, a development in Wenzhou that includes a new central business district, retail, leisure, tourism and residential zones. NEW WORLD DOCKSIDE DEVELOPMENT BLENDS ART AND COMMERCE IN KOWLOON New World Development has launched the first phase of Victoria Dockside, a mixed-use landmark development in Tsim Sha Tsui that it says will create a new iconic global art and design district in Hong Kong. The project is built on the site formerly known as Holt’s Wharf, which was a godown terminal next to the first railway to Mainland China – Kowloon and Canton Railway. Dating back to 1910, Holt’s Wharf served as a global freight and logistics hub, connecting the city to Mainland China and the world. In the name of the project, “Victoria” represents Victoria Harbour – pride of Hong Kong citizens, while “Dockside” marks the golden era of Holt’s Wharf, which was once the busiest port in the world. New World Development purchased Holt’s Wharf in 1971 and transformed it into New World Centre in 1978. New World Centre was the first mixed-use development complex comprising shopping mall, hotel and serviced apartments. ENGINEERS FROM ATKINS, DRAGAGES CELEBRATE HK TUNNEL BREAKTHROUGH
The northbound tunnel boring machine on the Lung Shan Tunnel project has broken through, ensuring the project is on schedule and due for completion by the end of the year. Atkins, Dragages Hong Kong and the Civil Engineering and Development Department celebrated the breakthrough on April 27. Work on the southbound section ended in March last year. At 4.8-km long, the Lung Shan Tunnel will be the longest twin tube road tunnel in Hong Kong and work on the project has engaged the biggest earth pressure balance TBM in the city, with a diameter of 14.1 metres. Unusually, the TBM went on to complete a 180-degree turn before construction of the northbound section. It is the first time in Hong Kong that a TBM has completed a U-turn in a specially designed rock cavern. The normal practice is to substantially dismantle the TBM prior to being transported back and set up again at its original launching position. “The project strengthens our tunnelling design capabilities and portfolio, and is therefore an extremely valuable testament for securing future tunnelling work,” says Ray Chan, project manager at SNCLavalin’s Atkins business in Hong Kong. www.atkinsglobal.com

SKYCITY AT HONG KONG AIRPORT ADDED TO THE LEAD 8 PORTFOLIO
Hong-Kong based architects, master planners and designers Lead 8 have been named lead design architect for the SkyCity Airport RDE complex being built by New World Development. The site has an area of 25 hectares, and will provide a maximum gross floor area of 350,000 m2 as it is completed in stages from 2023 to 2027. The complex is located adjacent to Hong Kong International Airport and is set to house retail, dining and state-of-the-art entertainment facilities tailor-made to tourists and Hongkongers. “Our design uses architectural forms and languages that are easily distinguishable from airport architecture. While it is also our intention to craft the retail space to be unlike a shopping mall. This will be an innovation-driven design, incorporating sustainable features through key design drivers to achieve, and indeed, exceed building certification standards,” says Claude Touikan, Lead 8 co-founder and executive director. The SkyCity Airport RDE complex adds to Lead 8’s aviation portfolio across the Asia-Pacific region. Al Seef, a new destination offering retail, dining, and hospitality experiences, has opened and features work by Hong Kong’s 10 DESIGN. The Egis-owned practice was the design architect for the 670-m stretch of the Dubai Creek waterfront that includes retail, food and beverage, hospitality, marina amenities and parking across a total areas of 85,000 m2. Led by Gordon Affleck and Paul Rodgers, 10 DESIGN’s scheme has broken down the retail and F&B amenities into a series of standalone pavilions fronting along the shores of Dubai Creek. The pavilions fully open out onto the promenade, blurring the distinction between internal and external spaces, providing the canvas for exciting, active, and bustling retail and hospitality concepts. To complete the offer, Al Seef accommodates two hotels by Jumeirah: a recently opened 150-key Zabeel House Mini and a 200-key Zabeel House. Extending from the hotels is the creation of separate F&B water pavilions that spill out and into the creek, stepping across a terraced, cascading landscape for a distinctive take on waterfront dining opportunities. 10design.co

CHINACHEM’S ONE HENNESSY POISED TO BECOME WAN CHAI LANDMARK
The Chinachem Group’s latest landmark in Wan Chai – the Grade-A commercial building One Hennessy – is on-track to be completed by the middle of next year. Located at 1 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, One Hennessy has 21 floors spanning about 29,260 m² GFA and 1,115 m² of lettable gross area per floor. Total lettable area reaches around 23,500 m² for all work spaces and 242 m² for the retail space on the first three floors. Prelease sales opened in May and have “drawn an overwhelming response”. Co-working space operator Kr Space has preleased seven floors spanning 7,710 m² for its first office centre in Hong Kong, while a second financial sector company has requested eight upper floors totalling 9,100 m². YOUTH SKILLS CONTEST TO EXPAND IN 2020, SAYS CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY COUNCIL
The Hong Kong Construction Youth Skills Competition 2018 was run late last month to help identify elite workers. Across six categories – including welding, bricklaying and joinery – more than 100 participants took part. A further 600 people were spectatorås at the event. Speaking at the opening ceremony on June 23, CIC chairman Chan Ka-kui said the competition aims to offer a platform for young tradesmen to share their experiences and enrich their skills so that the CIC could identify potential elites for focused training. During the competition, participants were required to complete various challenging tasks within six hours which created an exciting atmosphere at the construction council headquarters. Such was the enthusiasm for the event, the council says it hopes to organise the Hong Kong Construction Skills Competition in 2020 with a view to building a better future for the construction industry in Hong Kong. The Construction Industry Council was formed in 2007 and consists of a chairman and 24 members representing various sectors of the industry.The main functions of the CIC are to forge consensus on long-term strategic issues, convey the industry’s needs and aspirations to government, provide professional training and registration services, and serve as a communication channel between Government and the construction industry. www.cic.hk

HADID GETS CREATIVE IN NEW DESIGN FOR JIANGXI SCHOOL
The design for the Lushan Primary School in Jiangxi, China, by Zaha Hadid Architects features dramatic vaulted spaces that connect directly with their rural surroundings. The campus includes the school, dormitory and utility buildings composed as a network of barrel and parabolic vaults that open towards the river, the vaults stretch and intersect to accommodate the school’s varied programme. A long central courtyard acts as the school’s main circulation space and play area. The primary school will be an educational institute for 120 children located 160km northwest of Nanchang, the provincial capital, and serve 12 villages with a population of about 1,800 people. To minimise construction time and reduce the number of separate building elements required to be transported to the school’s remote location, the proposed project combines the local skills of in-situ concrete construction with new advancements in hot-wire cut foam formwork that can be prepared on site by an industrial robot to create the barrel and parabolic shaped moulds. www.zaha-hadid.com

The Luna at 18 Lun Fat Street in Wan Chai in Hong Kong is the new residential tower from Make Architects for Vanke Property (Hong Kong). The slim 29-storey tower contains 105 high-end serviced apartments, including one top-floor luxury penthouse and a resident’s clubhouse. It sits above a dual height podium containing retail and restaurants. Make was invited to compete for the interiors and façade design for an existing design, but took on a more holistic role after identifying a number of ways to improve the efficiency of the apartment layouts and the tower’s form.The history of the district has been expressed in the façade and balcony design. Both tower and podium are clad in champagne-gold, powder-coated aluminium rain screen panels that alternate between solid and perforated, meeting planning requirements as well as providing changing views and interesting patterns of light and shadow.“The space created within these studio apartments, in order to include luxury features you’d expect in far larger accommodation, is extraordinary and there is a continuation of detailing which is rare and sets this scheme apart,” says Make project director Sean Affleck. www.makearchitects.com

ITC, Shanghai, China MIPIM Asia Awards 2017 - Best Chinese Futura Mega Project GOLD Award
China has seen phenomenal developments of its building industry over the past few decades, mirroring the frenetic growth of the domestic economy. Along with the rising skyline, both homegrown and international architectural design firms have found a wealth of opportunities to capitalize on their expertise, though the challenges they face are no less challenging. Lead 8, an international design studio with award-winning experience in architecture, interiors, masterplanning, branding and graphics, has made considerable foray into the China market, where it recognizes the need to be agile and open to new ways of doing things, given how the architecture and construction sector there is evolving dynamically at breakneck pace and in greatly diverse ways.
The Rise of TODs According to David Buffonge, co-founder and executive director of Lead 8, Chinese architectural design has been reshaped by a host of mega trends. “Epic economic growth in China has had the biggest

impact on the built environment. Super connectivity, from roads to rail and air travel, has also resulted in an incredibly positive impact,” he said. Although Lead 8 was formed only in early 2014, its founding partners have worked together for over 15 years in Asia, including China. Significant progress of modern Chinese architecture is clearly manifested in the emergence of Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs), which are compact and vertical projects seamlessly connected to public transport with more public space and are integrated with the arts, culture and landscape. Calling TODs the most sustainable form of development, Buffonge explained that “they offer a variety of uses within easy reach of each other, connects well to public transport, reduces commuter reliance on vehicles and encourages walking.”
Technology Disruptions Technology is another driver of continuous change remolding the Chinese architectural landscape. It has given rise to online retail, which many see as a threat to bricks-and-mortar shops, though Buffonge does not share such a view. “Many businesses have seemingly suffered due to online shopping trends and the new shopping habits of millennials. Instead, we see opportunities and are tapping into the etail market to

create new destinations using the concept of shared space to create a more immersive retail experience, “he said, noting that there will be more variety of merchandise at one’s fingertips, retail businesses sharing space with cafes and cafes operating their own co-share workplaces. “I am also talking about how we work and share space with each other. Starbucks, for example, will probably operate their own co-share workspace in the future. More creative office space is now in demand and not only from startups. Financial firms also want to exist in coworking environments.”
Building Mixed-Use Communities More mixed-use projects that incorporate residential, commercial, office and retail buildings are being developed in strategically selected urban settings throughout the major Chinese cities and as part of transit-oriented developments. Converted from a dated department store into a new mixed-use landmark in the Sanlitun district of Beijing, the Pacific Century Place stands as a proud edifice of Lead 8’s design excellence in TODs. The project was awarded “gold” for “Best Refurbished Building” at the MIPIM Asia Awards in 2017. Highlighting a “mini blocks” concept of experiential space, Lead 8’s design strategy is to blur the boundaries of indoor, outdoor, work and play at this LEED Gold-certified property. “Mixed-used TODs are popular with the local governments not only because they are seen as more sustainable but they also provide better financial models with their better returns, flexibility and phasing opportunities. Reducing traffic is a high priority with most municipal governments in China, so TODs are highly encouraged,” he added.

Lead 8 also runs a number of aviation-related mixed-use projects outside some Chinese cities. Mixed-use airport developments are on the rise because over 50% of the revenues generated by airports in Asia come from retail, commercial, office and hotel developments located there.
Sustainability vs ROI? Even though TODs generally come with a heavier sustainability commitment in China, building them does not undermine the interests of developers principally focused on returns on investment. “Developers usually have a long-term or short-term approach to optimising returns. But branding is also important especially over the long term and how they are perceived by the city authorities is important if they intend to continue bidding for land. So, many developers are now looking beyond immediate ROI,” said Buffonge.

Solving the pollution problem has long dominated the agenda of Chinese cities. “Sustainability has become mandatory in all presentations by architects to government authorities. They have found that a sensitive and responsible approach to design can determine how fast they get planning permission. Developers also know that speed of approval has a big impact on ROI and doing the right thing will be of great benefit to them,” he said. “But developers are getting smarter and smarter in finding ways to comply, without sacrificing ROI and construction efficiency. Office property developers are especially aware that they need to obtain the key sustainability certifications in order to attract Grade-A tenants.” Policy stringency has also spread rapidly to other areas of architectural design – building codes, for example. “For architecture designers like us, it has been a challenge working with the new regulations but we believe it is for the betterment of the environment and the safety of everybody,” he said. As the architectural scene of China stands ready for more changes, the mantra underlying future developments in the next 20 years will be, as Buffonge put it, “sustainability, sustainability, sustainability.”

s award-winning architect John Pauline settles into his new role as Managing Director & Design Principal at the Hong Kong office of renowned Miami-based architectural practice Arquitectonica, PRC showcases one of the most longawaited and most ambitious private projects in the modern history of Florida’s largest city. As the brainchild of the Miami subsidiary of Swire Properties, which has headquarters in London and Hong Kong, the US$1.05 billion Brickell City Centre in downtown Miami is a 501,700 square metre mixed-use development covering three city blocks and comprising retail, office, hotel and residential space. Future phases being planned include three additional blocks. From the planning stage Arquitectonica collaborated closely with landscape architect ArquitectonicaGEO to deliver an extraordinary multilevel environment. Phase 1 completed in 2016, the development also features the environmentally sophisticated and innovative Climate Ribbon™, a 13,940 square metre elevated artistic masterpiece of steel, fabric and glass that protects visitors from inclement weather, captures sea breezes to regulate air flow and temperature, collects and funnels rainwater for reuse, and allows visitors to enjoy natural light in an open-air experience.

DELIVERING A LONG-TERM VISION FOR A SUSTAINABLE WORLD

RETAIL RENAISSANCE For Bernardo Fort-Bresica, founding principal of Arqitectonica, the objective was to make an urban retail environment, rather than an indoor suburban mall, and to address the realities of Miami’s hot and humid climate. Comprised of 51,600 square metres of retail space Brickell City Centre has created a new downtown for Miami's most urban renaissance. “The solution was to add another layer to the existing urban fabric instead of disrupting it with a giant box mall,” he notes. Brickell City Centre’s connectivity excels on many levels and solves the classic urban planning conflict between pedestrians and vehicles with pedestrian bridges across the streets. The third level promenade is linked directly to the adjacent subway station, as well as to the hotel, office buildings and condo towers that are above the podium for easy access to the retail, cinema, cafes and restaurants. The access and egress points to the parking and loading enables vehicles to enter from one street and exit via another, coordinating with the one-way street system to reduce traffic on the surrounding streets. Digital connectivity is provided with a Brickell City Centre application, additionally the Cinemex movie theaters and other tenants also have apps.

CONNECTING WITH NATURE The Climate Ribbon™ concept was developed at the planning stage to be a continuous canopy that floats above the promenades and maintains a comfortable micro-climate. Engineered by the same French company that created the new court at the Louvre Museum with simulations produced in Canada and manufactured by a German company, for Fort-Bresica it represents a truly global effort. The faceted geometry of the glazing and the flowing fabric ribbons look sculptural but are designed as per careful analysis of the sun angles and breezes. It lifts up to scoop in prevailing breezes and swoops down gently to help propel the breezes along the length of the promenades. The nearly 14,000 square metres of glass also collects eleven million liters of rain water annually in cisterns on each block, used for all the landscaping irrigation. “It is a high-tech 21st century take on an ancient idea, from the souks of Arabia to the exclusive shopping arcade in Milan known as Galleria Vittorio Emanuel, and makes possible a walkable, open-air ‘street’ in Miami’s sub-tropical climate. With the help of new technologies, the sculpted shape is a result of a scientifically derived solution to create comfort through natural means, where no energy is consumed to obtain the results,” adds Fort-Bresica. Brickell City Centre also features 26,100 square metres of office space and is home to EAST, a rooftop hotel with 263 guest rooms and 89 serviced apartments. Standing 40 stories high, EAST’s slender tower is suspended over gardens and pools. The streetside lobby interacts with adjacent shops and connects to a poolside bar and restaurant at the podium roof level. The main

body of the tower houses serviced residences in the lower levels and hotel guestrooms in the upper levels. Meanwhile, the top floors are occupied by Miami's highest conference centre and a bar lounge on the top floor opens out to a tower roof terrace that provides stunning views of the bay and the city skyline. The thin rectangular glass prism of the EAST tower is eroded twice and at the podium roof garden level a triangular space opens to the pool deck to result in a monumental porch. The supporting wall becomes a three-dimensional mural and the tower rooftop is equally eroded to create the sky lounge. The two interventions create a distinctive skyline from distant and pedestrian vantage points. Balconies are distorted into parallelograms inflecting toward the bay and Brickell Avenue to create different readings from different approaches to the tower. On the upper hotel floors the balconies project from the façade and fade towards the base like geometric cascading water or hanging tropical vines, adding a third dimension to the glass prism. Two residential condominium towers with a total of 780 units and hidden parking structures designed to accommodate 2,626 cars and 156 motorcycles
make up the space. While the hotel, office and residential towers are each unique they are similar in their objective to create a vision that is sustainable, well-informed and timeless. Use of materials with a long-life cycle such as insulating metal panels, glass facades, unique granite flooring and ceilings made of bamboo planks create a combination of industrial and natural materials. Bridging the man-made and the natural worlds and transforming the essence of sustainability into an aesthetic were also part of the vision. In a space where the city grid meets the waterfront geometry there is an angular undercurrent in the details that reflects the geographic confluence. “Multiple uses also forced us to think three dimensionally and to envision Brickell City Centre as the new hub of activity for the urban core of Miami. Challenges aside, the development has filled a huge void for a significant workforce, as well as tourists and residents that previously had few facilities. Nothing gives an architect more pleasure that seeing an initial sketch become a building and then see the public enjoying it,� concludes Fort-Bresica.

he Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council jointly hosted the seventh Construction Safety Week in May 2018 to promote health and safety in the construction industry, and inspire practitioners to work together to achieve the goal of “zero accidents” on construction sites. A wide range of activities were held during the week of 21 - 29 May, including a Kick-off Ceremony and Conference, Carnival, Site Visits and a “Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme” Award Presentation Ceremony. The Innovative Safety Initiative Award 2018, a prestigious industry event co-organised by the Development Bureau, the Construction Industry Council and Hong Kong Construction Association. Its Award Presentation Ceremony was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 21 May. With over 120 innovative ideas under three award categories – Health and Welfare; Safety Management System, Training and Promotion; and Safety Operational Device – several businesses were honoured for their significant contributions to improve workplace safety in the construction industry. This award ceremony brought together over 240 guests to witness the joyful moments.

The biennial search concludes for construction’s most exemplary The Quality Building Award 2018 (QBA 2018) came to a glittering conclusion in June as winners of the most prestigious industry award in Hong Kong’s building sector were announced at the QBA 2018 Award Presentation Ceremony. In addition to around 500 industry leaders attending in person, the Ceremony was also attended by The Hon Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, GBM, GBS, JP, The Acting Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Mr Wong Wai Lun, Michael, JP, Secretary for Development of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. QBA was co-founded in 2002 by nine of Hong Kong’s leading property sector institutions and has been jointly organized on a biennial basis since. It has become established as the most unbiased, prestigious industry award in building sector. Among the nine co-organizing institutions, QBA 2018 was led by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors. QBA 2018 features six main categories with “Grand Award” and “Merit” awards. Of all the winners, a special “Quality Excellence Award” will be awarded to the best overall project. A panel of 13 jurors of diverse professional backgrounds assesses the projects according to strict criteria.

This year the practice was not only once again recognised at Hong Kong’s prestigious biennial Quality Building Awards (QBA) with Merit and Grand awards for three of its more recent projects, but also the Quality Excellence Award for best overall project.
STREAMLINED LUXURY DLN received a merit award in the category of Hong Kong Residential Building (Single Building) for AREZZO, the third of its “A” collection projects in Mid-Levels West. Featuring a streamlined façade with floor to ceiling windows this 48-storey residential building comprises 127 spacious residences with stunning city views of Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline. Comprising 40 two-bedroom and 80 three-bedroom apartments, the development also contains seven special units, three of which are 2/F residences with private roof terraces. The development also contains of a two three and four-bedroom units on the 49/F, a four-bedroom simplex unit on the 50/F. The four-bedroom penthouse on 51/F also boasts its own private rooftop garden and pool. Other residential amenities include a private double-storey clubhouse and a green landscaped entrance forecourt at the podium floors, both of which may be considered essential and comprehensive additions to a high-end residential development in the MidLevels district.

MAXIMISING POTENTIAL In collaboration with PCP Architects, DLN also obtained a Grand Award in the Hong Kong Non-Residential, New Building – Non-Government, Institutional or Community categor y for 18 King Wah Road. This development saw DLN seek to maximise the potential of the site which lies adjacent to Victoria Harbour. Whilst fully utilising the views and making a significant contribution to the neighbourhood the focus for DLN from the early planning stage was on sustainability and creating a smart and healthy working environment for occupants of the building. The addition of a Smart Office App returns control to the occupants of the development whilst allowing them to personalise their working environment. With no integrated podium design, the commercial development of 18 King Wah Road stands out from other commercial buildings, with the majority of the ground floor spaces used as greenery and passage connecting to the future promenade. Setbacks of up to nine metres on four sides of the site also improve the spatial experience from street level, whilst the adoption of an aerodynamic building form reduces building mass and enhances airflow around the entire building. Hong Kong’s climate was also considered in the selection of materials and double low-e glazing were utilised to reduce energy consumption. Double layers of solar fins also provided a solution for balancing stunning harbour views and the glare of the afternoon sun coming in from the same direction.
BRINGING QUALITY EXCELLENCE TO HONG KONG Also winner of a Grand Award, the Hong Kong Housing Association’s (HA) Hung Fuk Estate was recognised with the QBA’s highest distinction of Quality Excellence. Inspired by the HA’s mission to develop sustainable

public housing and to facilitate the integration of new public rental housing (PRH) estates with existing communities through deliberate planning, DLN’s design of the first such estate in Hung Shui Kiu Area 13, Yuen Long comprises 4,905 flats in nine domestic blocks on a 6.4-hectare site, designed to accommodate around 12,900 people. The blocks range in height from 16-24 storeys. Completed in 2015, the development brings a substantial population to a rural area earmarked for new town development. A variety of recreational facilities, retail and transport services are provided within the estate, which creates a sustainable and harmonious living environment for residents. DLN’s planning incorporates two east-west view corridors of 30 metres and 15 metres in width respectively, to allow permeability of sunlight and breeze. The roof cover comprises solid and transparent panels titled at an angle to reduce noise impact and allow penetration of natural lighting. A zigzag semicovered design also allows air ventilation which eliminates the need to install fire services sprinklers and ventilation systems. The shopping centre in the estate features a “Main Street” concept, with a covered walkway decorated with Chinese motifs, highlighting traditional rural culture and providing shading along the shop fronts. Synchronising traditional rural surroundings the colour scheme of the estate is modelled on ink-andwash painting, whilst the exterior of the domestic blocks is mainly white and grey, with highlights in yellow, orange and green tones, representing the colour of the paddy fields throughout the seasons. The landscape design also uses a wide range of greenery, including roof and vertical greening, and the use of renewable energy.

stablished in 1992, CL3 Architects (CL3) is an internationally renowned architectural and interior design studio based in Hong Kong with regional offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Led by Founder and Managing Director William Lim, CL3 is one of the most in-demand studios in the region. And with a 60-person-strong team of dedicated professionals specialising in hotels, restaurants, residential club houses, offices, retail and art installation design, CL3 has worked on a wide spectrum of architectural and interior projects. One of its most recently completed projects to open on the China mainland is the Hard Rock Hotel, Shenzhen. An internationally recognised brand, it is the first attempt the Hard Rock label has made to penetrate the China market.
High Expectations “Hard Rock came to CL3 aware of the high expectations Chinese customers have. They wanted to upgrade their signature style to accommodate the 5-star expectations of the market and to make it more luxurious. They turned to CL3 to enhance their project delivery to the market and add a Chinese twist to the Hard Rock energy, rock music and superstar memorabilia that is the DNA of the brand,” explains Lim. As a practice CL3 prides itself on treating every project as a unique challenge and paying attention to every detail – from the design of architecture to interior detailing, to creating human-oriented and quality design with artistic value. “Our aim was to work alongside the [Hard Rock] brand to create a vibrant and energy-filled interior. An obvious starting point in terms of integrating Chinese culture was to incorporate the colour red and an image of a dragon into the design. We custom-designed a golden dragon made of drumsticks and cymbals that would set a dramatic and ‘Instagram-able’ tone right from arriving at the hotel”, Lim adds. Text: Elizabeth Dooley

Protruding outside of the entrance façade, the golden dragon, made of 1680 of cymbals, meanders through the ten-metre-high lobby space to lead visitors through to a red glass elevator lobby that takes them to the reception and ballroom on the 5th floor. Here, another installation of 160 red guitars is suspended to form the backdrop of the reception desk and imitate the traditional Chinese screen. The lobby lounge on the right is filled with hard rock memorabilia and a jamming area for music lovers.
Balancing East and West By reinterpreting Chinese elements CL3 have brought a rational and controlled artistic element to the project that strikes a seamless balance between eastern and western culture. An all-day restaurant streams rock and roll music and uses vinyl records as its motif for the wall artwork and screen partitions. Meanwhile the transformation of the colour scheme from red through to yellow creates a subtle ambiance throughout the various dining facilities which include private dining rooms and semi-private alcoves for group events. The 258 guestrooms include standard rooms, suites and presidential suites, which Lim explains are designed to reflect the life of a rockstar on the road. Spacious rooms featuring circular beds and psychedelic carpets lead to open bathrooms complete with gold and black mosaic mirrors, creating a strong Feng Shui energy combined with vibrant ultraviolet lighting effects and custom-designed furniture inspired by mid-century vintage Chinese pieces. “The Hard Rock hotel represents a different artistic approach to finishes, furnishing and equipment for us. The result is a hotel that has become one of the most anticipated and original hospitality products to enter the China market. Despite its out-of-town location, it has become a huge success that we a proud to have been a part of,” concludes Lim.
