Annual Review 2014 - 2015

Llangollen District Scouts – Annual Report Scouting is a hobby they say. One hour a week they say. Well, most leaders would dispute the one hour a week myth, but the District Team have put in significantly more time than that this year, and what an impact it has made! District membership numbers continue to rise slowly but steadily, but more importantly the quality of Scouting offered to all members in the District is rising at a rate of knots! A huge thank you to Sarah, Karen, Gareth and Gerry. All sections have had exposure to quality District events this year - from the first District Cub Camp for many years, to cycling events for Scouts, Sleepovers and Camp for Beavers, a trip to Ireland for Explorers and water activities all round! For a small District we are doing well! Thanks to a couple of Explorer Leaders, we have, for the first time, launched a proper Young Leader Training Unit (its not really so scary is it Paul and Catrin?!) This will offer decent leadership training for those Explorer Scouts that help out in other sections. Of course, it's not all plain sailing. Several groups continue to struggle to recruit adult leaders which has a massive impact on what we can provide. This has resulted in the closure of a couple of sections, but through the support of a well established group we have introduced Scouting to those in the Plas Madoc / Rhosymedre area. As leaders, most get a buzz out of watching the delight on the faces of our members as they achieve their best - from a 6 year old Beaver Scout spending their first ever night away from home, through to our older members attending the prestigious St. Georges Day Parade for Queen's Scouts in Windsor Castle. The District also provided, for the first time, a Leaders Play Day weekend - the opportunity for adult members to try out those activities for themselves that we offer so readily to our young members (but don't want to try out in front of them!) We plan to carry on this idea - after all, leaders are just Big Kids too when they are off duty! Finally, after 20+ years offering storage support to other community organisations, the District has reclaimed Cefn Mawr HQ, allowing us to provide fire lighting and bushcraft training on our own doorsteps. Congratulations this year to Rose Corbett-Thomas on being awarded the Silver Wolf and to Gerry Kellett the Bar to the Silver Acorn in the St. Georges Day Awards, and to Roger Cragg on his Award for Merit. All these leaders offer a huge amount to the young members, and other adults of Llangollen District.

Cae Llwyd: District Campsite Report The site was again well used last year – April to October mostly. Unfortunately, it remains the case that the site is not used very often by Scouting within the District – I know that the condition of the track leading up to the site is something that may put people off! Nevertheless, it is a popular site with a number of Scout Sections returning either each year or every other year. There are three bookings for this summer each for at least a week. Explorer Scouts from the District will be using it for a Pioneering Camp. It is also a very popular site for overnight camping for practice and assessed DoE expeditions. There has also been a few occasional bookings for water activities – canoeing and raft building. The Dee Valley Scout Canoe Club use the site during the summer months for canoe training. There have been two separate days for Paddlesport and BCU 1* training and assessment in June and two more in July concentrating on 2* training and assessment. These were well attended by over 27 individuals in scouting within the District. The District has also run a Foundation Safety and Rescue training session. Roger and I have met with representatives of Dee Valley Water Company at the camp site where we were able to show how the site is used. The Company remains very supportive recognising the good work that the district is putting in and appears to be receptive to not only renewing the lease but also extending the term of the lease [currently at 5 years]. A longer term, 15 or even 25 years, could result in the District being able to look into the possibility of grant aid. If any section is interested in using the site please contact me.

Gerry Kellett - Camp Warden

District Beaver Report The last year has seen a rapid growth within the beaver sections of Llangollen District. We have been having lots of fun already this year, and have even more activities planned for the months to come. Back in February we had our biggest ever Beaver Indoor sleepover and daytrip to Manchester Airport with over 62 Beavers in attendance. The interactive nature of the tour truly helped the Beavers earn their level 2 air activities badge. The Beavers had the opportunity to board real aircraft, whilst learning about the different job roles that help ensure the airport runs smoothly. Not to forget everyone’s favourite part - hopping into the pilot’s seat. It was great to see the Beavers dressed as pilots, Police officers, cabin crew and other roles. In April we teamed up with the district Cubs to celebrate St Georges Day, yet another phenomenal day with over 125 Adolygiad Blynyddol 2014 - 2015

children all having an amazingly Buzzy day learning about bees, dressing up as bees, face painting, crafts, badge making, throwing fluffy bees at tin cans and so much more On the 9th of May we teamed up with the district cubs yet again and participated in the JOTT 2015. This year we walked from Bersham Iron Works through Plas power woods up to Nant Mill Visitor Centre, despite the weather we had a lovely day with just over 100 people in attendance. We are due to have a ride on a steam train in Welshpool, Visit Chester Cathedral and that’s just District activities. I know all our individual groups have also been incredibly busy and I want to thank all the leaders for the ongoing hard work and commitment. So much so, that we have been able to award 29 Chief Scout Bronze Awards amazing achievement everyone well done. There’s been Beavers competing in Bowlaree and we can now announce that Johnstown Beavers came, 4th overall throughout their age group worldwide, congratulations. So what with doing, Water safety, Nights at the museum, Night Hikes, Litter Picking, Welly wanging, slime making, Photography, Visiting Danger Point, Making big bubbles, Wheelchair Racing, Seed Planting, Moon Walking, Experimenting Science with Pops Bangs and Fizzes, Making Instruments and buckets loads of Hot Chocolate and Marshmallows, I can safely say we have truly been very busy Beavers.

District Cub Report Well, another year over & another report to write, how quickly time flies! The Cub section have had a busy year with the highlight being the first District camp in over 25 yrs, we've also set up a new 'sub section' of Penycae in Rhosymedre and had a District JOTI event for the first time. The year started last April with the annual 6-aside football event in Plas Madoc which was well attended & saw 1st Penycae take the trophy with 1st Llangollen as close runners-up. The older Cubs were invited by the Llangollen District water activities team in June to take part in canoeing and kayaking training to complete parts of the paddlepower passport. This is a new awards system from the BCU leading up to the 1* award. All of the Cubs that took part gained various stages & one Cub completed the top stage to gain his 1*, an excellent achievement and one that we hope to replicate this year. The next event was the Sports night in Bryn Collen school . We had the biggest turn out, I think ever, and ran out of time as we had to run lots of heats! It was attended by every pack in the District which was really great to see & won overall by 1st Johnstown with 1st Llangollen in 2nd place. I haven't got enough space to bore you too much with the ins & outs of District camp but if you would like to see more photos etc. they can all be found here: http://clwydscouts.org.uk/2014/09/llangollendistrict-cub-camp-2014/ on the Clwyd Area website. Needless to say it was a very successful

event thanks to all of the Leaders who took part and the Cubs who, I have to say, behaved amazingly well - even down to being asleep by 11.30 on the first night which is unheard of!! Our next District event was JOTI (Jamboree on the Internet) where Cubs were able to speak to other members in Scouting, from all over the world, over the internet. We also completed the communicators badge taking part in activities like writing your name in Braille, code breaking and building lego models over walkie talkies. Again you can see lots of pictures and more information on the Clwyd Area website here: http://clwydscouts.org.uk/2014/10/jamboree-on-the-internet-in-llangollen/ . Following last years successful visit to Kibblestone International Camp we again joined the Cub Activity day in March and Cubs were able to take part in lots of different activities including Climbing, Archery, Indoor Caving, Falconry and Backwards Cooking. The weather was wet & cold in the morning but did brighten up after lunch - we had 72 Cubs taking part from 8 out of 9 packs. It's a great opportunity for Cubs to take part in exciting activities and make new friends. Our teams are already booked in ready for next year! Finally we managed to sneak this year's District 6-aside football into this report as well. Following the closure & re-opening of Plas Madoc, we were eventually able to hold the event there again. Some of the packs struggled with numbers for teams this year and there was a lot of 'sharing' players from one pack to another to make up the numbers. The Cubs took this in their stride & put their best into whichever team they were playing for at the time which I think sums up the enthusiasm and team spirit that our District has. The overall winners were 1st Johnstown with 1st Penycae runners up. I'd once again like to thank all of the Cub leaders in the District and Rose for all of their help and support over the last year as well as the parents & Cubs who make it all possible. And, with 2016 being the Centenary of Cub Scouts it doesn't look like we're going to be short of things to do in the near future……

Karen - ADC Cub Scouts.

District Scout Report The Llangollen District currently has 5 troops, Ceiriog Valley, Johnstown, Llangollen, Penycae and Ruabon although Chirk may have started again by the time this is read. Following the success of last year’s programme it was decided to continue with the same events this year. The 1st event was a quiz night at Ceiriog valley, each group submitted 10 questions ranging from music to scouting, pictures and general knowledge, with 5 Scouts per team with around 9 teams entering it was a well attended, close fought competition with a team from Penycae being the eventual winners. Congratulations to them. Thank you to Ceiriog Valley for organising this. 2nd event was “the outdoor challenge held at Penycae HQ this combined many scout skills with orienteering and 5 challenges ranging from 1st aid to fire lighting and pioneering and team challenges.

With teams from each group 5 Scouts to a team sadly only 6 teams entered, thankfully the weather was kind. Again another close fought competition with a team from Llangollen being the winners congratulations to them. Next event is the cycle cross which is to be held at Glyn Ceiriog hope the weather is good for this. I would to say a very big Thank you to all leaders for your support and all the hard work that you put in without you it couldn’t happen.

District Explorer Scout Report There still remains only two Explorer Units within the District - associated with two Scout Groups - Penycae and Llangollen. Nevertheless, there is an open invitation from both Explorer Units for any young person between the ages of 14 to 18 to go along and take part in Explorer Scouting. Quite a lot has happened over the last 12 months – doesn’t it go quick – too quickly! Just look at the following joint District Explorer Scout activities:─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─

Explorer Scout Forums Summer camp to Ireland 10 Pin Bowling Competition Paintballing Segway Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition Training Weekend Number of DoE Bronze practice and assessed expeditions

The annual District Explorer Scout Ireland was a great success. Leaving Ruabon station and travelling by public transport – train, bus, train, boat and then three buses [not wanting to mention the four hours on the A483 to Chester and missing three ferries] – through Wales and Ireland – finally arriving at our camp site belonging 1st Drogheda Scout Group in a little village called Collon by midday Sunday all of us very tired. However, from there on the camp was a great success. We made our own camp showers, bridge across tha stream to our hammocks, camp fire area and cooked on wood fires. We visited Drogheda, again, using the very dependable Irish bus service. We also took part in Go Karting, roller skating and 10 pin bowling. Early Friday morning, we packed up and travelled back to Dublin where we were booked in to a hostel. Explorer Scouts were split into groups and given challenges to complete in the city before meeting up in the evening for an Irish pub meal and entertained with some live Irish music. We spent the morning again in Dublin undertaking investitures at Dublin cathedral before heading for the ferry and then train from Holyhead back to Ruabon station. Great memories for all of us.

Following successful expedition training in early 2014 there has been a number of successful training and assessed DoE Award expeditions. Looking forward to this summer’s District Explorer Scout Camp to the Middlewood Scout camp Site, near Manchester.

Diamond Network Report It’s been another busy year of scouting for Network! As always, it’s been a mix of activities, socials and supporting other sections throughout the district. We start with Summer Camp last year- A joint venture with the Explorers and a week-long trip to Ireland. Travelling from Ruabon to Ireland and back by train, ferry and bus made a change from the usual ‘kit-heavy’ summer camp concept. The week finished with a couple of days in Dublin, where we were able to invest 2 new network members, Beth and Caroline. Alongside the regular River Cruises on the Wye & Severn, and the training weekend at Bala, we have had a weekend at the fantastic mountain lodge at RAF Valley, supported a number of camps in the district, such as the Explorer Pioneering camp at Cae Llwyd and the District Cub Camp. Our latest Network social took us Segwaying around Chirk Castle, it comes highly recommended! A number of changes are occurring with Network, at a local and national level. Nationally, Network is moving towards a nationally run concept, with a central database of activities and contacts, in an attempt to be more flexible for those members who may move around for university, or for work. As we’ve run our Network at District level since its’ inception in 2012, we won’t notice too many changes to the way we run it today, but should have greater visibility of what other Networks are doing, and may have members from outside the Area joining in our activities. At a local level, Sion has recently handed over his role as Network leader (or Co-ordinator as it shall be known in the new structure) to me, A big thanks for all the work he’s put in over the last couple of years and I look forward to carrying it on. Finally, congratulations to Sam Dodd on achieving his Gold D of E earlier this year!

Scouting age ranges There are 400,000 young people in Scouting, spread across five sections: Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and the Scout Network. Each section has its own balanced programme of activities, badges and awards.

Beavers (6–8) Beaver Scouts are our youngest members. They usually meet weekly to take part in a wide range of activities including games, crafts, singing, visits and good turns, along with plenty of outdoor activities. They will also have the opportunity to take part in the fun and excitement of camps and sleepovers. It may be the first time they spend a night away from home so it’s a real adventure for them.

Cubs (8-10½) A Cub Scout Pack can have up to 36 Cub Scouts and is split into smaller groups called Sixes. Cubs take part in a wide range of activities designed to be interesting and challenging. A Cub Scout meeting consists of games and activities with plenty of time spent outdoors. Camps and holidays are some of the most memorable events of the year for Cubs.

Scouts (10½–14) Each Scout Troop consists of small units of six to eight Scouts called a Patrol, usually led by a Patrol Leader. Outdoor activities feature prominently, with the highlight being camping. Throughout the year, Scouts learn various skills, such as map reading, camp cooking and first aid in preparation for camp. Rock climbing, potholing, gliding, photography and international experiences are just some of the things they get up to.

Explorer Scouts (14–18) Explorers are encouraged to lead themselves in deciding the programme and direction of the Unit, with support and guidance from leaders. The section also includes the Young Leaders’ Scheme, where young people are able to take on a leadership role in one of the younger sections. There is wider scope for activities like offshore sailing, campaigning, performing, parascending, mountaineering and expeditions.

Scout Network (18-25) Scout Network is the fifth and final section of the Scouting movement. Scout Network members take part in a variety of activities, which they undertake and organise themselves with the support of a Scout Network Leader. Example activities include abseiling, camping, circus skills, climbing, go-karting, gorge walking, hiking, pioneering and watersports.
