Scouting in Llangollen District The District is responsible for promoting the development of Scouting in the District and arranging co-operation with other organisations. It is also responsible for the raising of funds and the administration of the District’s finance and property and supervising the administration of Groups, particularly in relation to finance and the trusteeship of property. Attending to District administration, particularly relating to the appointment of Leaders, Section Assistants, Skills Instructors, Administrators and Advisers forms an important role for the District. The Llangollen Scout District covers an area comprising the southern part of Denbighshire and the south western part of Wrexham Maelor. It extends from Llandrillo and Corwen along the Dee valley to Chirk and includes from Johnstown to the Ceiriog valley.

The District is part of the Clwyd Area Scout Association which brings together the Llangollen District with the Scout Districts of Wrexham, Vale of Clwyd and Flintshire.

Llangollen District Scouts – Annual Report I write this in such an abnormal time, reflecting back on Scouting life pre-Coronavirus. We hold our AGM late in the season to allow us to share and learn from the exciting Summer activities offered regularly to our young members. Sadly, not this year. A quiet, quick AGM follows. But life and Scouting did exist pre-COVID-19 and was positive and encouraging. An increasingly large group of motivated and enthusiastic leaders were offering an ever-expanding programme of challenging activities. Another Explorer Belt expedition was launched and in preparation involving the largest ever group of participants. Llangollen Scouts and Explorers visited Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland for the first time and our District representative at World Scout Jamboree in America, Daisy, was selected as UK flag bearer for the opening ceremony - fantastic! Locally, we had more leadersthanever attain their Wood Badge and more undertake training towards gaining a Nights Away permit. As ever, there were leadership changes but the risk of losing 1st Corwen Scout Group due to lack of leaders was quickly followed by the establishment of the largest team of new adults that the group has ever had, allowing all 3 sections to relaunch a term after. Congratulations, well done and good luck to that team! Thanks to the extremely hard work of Ian and Sharon Henshall, Llangollen District formally opened the old Cefn Mawr HQ as our own Rosemary Corbett-Thomas Activity Centre, allowing our local Scouts to run an ever expanding programme of activities. This is an invaluable resource. This time to reflect is quite refreshing. We were doing well thanks to an exceptional team of leaders across the District. We will get back there!

Cae Llwyd: District Campsite Report Following the District’s annual canoe and kayak training days in June last year and a slightly smaller number of camping nights than in previous years there have been big changes in relation to Cae Llwyd.

Firstly, from September onwards the water company [Severn Trent] had drained the reservoir to undertake repair work following which it was unusable for the rest of the season.

Secondly, Roger and I have been liaising with the water company since the Autumn of last year endeavouring to renew the District lease. We have met with representatives of the water company and some of the discussions have been difficult. The present situation is that we have been presented with a draft lease which we have found to be very onerous. Comments have been made back to representatives of the water company and we were waiting, hopefully, to have another meeting – and then the lockdown has slowed everything down.

Hopefully, we will be able to renegotiate a new lease which allows the District to carry on using this great facility..

District Beaver Report We started the year with a District week end camp at Penycae, as part of the weekend the beavers completed the JOTT walk, we had to change our plan of having a picnic on the walk as the rain poured down. Older beavers camped for 2 nights and the younger beavers for 1 night. District camps are always well attended and an opportunity for all beaver leaders to support each other, share ideas and for the beavers to mix with other groups, make new friends. In February 2020 Corwen beavers relaunched , welcome to the beavers and beaver leaders we hope you can join us in future District events.

District Cub Report The year started off with a JOTT walk in May along the Llangollen canal from Chirk Aqueduct to Trevor Aqueduct. It was a good turnout with the Cubs loving the tunnels and plenty of wildlife along the way. We had a picnic half way along the route and ended up at the community centre for tea & cakes – obviously vital to replenish the calories that we’ve used! Next in the Cub District calendar was the sports evening which had 50ish Cubs representing 5 packs. The Cubs took part in various team activities including

Rugby training, Frisbee golf, Obstacle course and Orienteering. It was a lovely evening (for a change!) and great to see so many Cubs having fun together. In September we held a District Sixer Camp for the older Cubs. Again, we had a good turn out with the Cubs finding their own way to the campsite. Once there they pitched their own tents, cooked their own food and took part in activities like pioneering to complete their outdoor adventure challenge among other badges. Most of the weekend was spent eating and hopefully one that we will do again in the future. Cubs took part in various other events like the All Wales Cub Fun Day, Flip Out and the Panto with the final event of the year being Kibblestone 2020. This is an event that we have been running for several years now and it’s a great day with a variety of activities on offer. The Cubs get to take part in 5 different bases ranging from Climbing, Crate stacking, Axe throwing to Cooking, Woggle making and Pond dipping. This year the day was even more special as it was the last District event that Cubs were able to get together before lockdown. I’d like to thanks Rose and all of the other Cub Leaders for all of their hard work over the last year in supporting the District Events and hope that it won’t be too long before we can get back together again in the future.

District Explorer Scouts District Explorer Scouting has seen yet another successful year – numbers of Explorer scouts has increased again and there has been another year of exciting activities: • • • • •

Again, the District expedition training weekend was a great success with a record number of Explorer Scouts attending. This quality training enabled the Explorer Scouts to complete practice DoE expeditions and successful assessments. We had two silver and two gold qualifying canoe expeditions on the River Thames and three bronze and one silver practice and qualifying walking expeditions this year. So well done to all those who completed their expedition section of the DoE.

Silver DofE Camp

Explorer Scouts also took part in several camps [within their Groups], various canoe training sessions and the annual River Wye and Severn Canoe Trips. Young Leader Training for those Explorer Scouts who are or wish to work within the other sections within a Scout Group is mandatory in such situations regardless of whether or not they take part in the wider Explorer Scout Programme. There are presently two Explorer Scout units - associated with two Scout Groups - Penycae and Llangollen. Both are highly successful and have over 40 Explorer Scouts in total. Unfortunately, from January onwards, there was the appearance of Covid-19 and when it would hit the UK was on everyone’s minds, which impacted on our future thinking and finally, at the very end of the year [ie March, 2020], we were hit by lockdown. This also has meant the postponement of this year’s District Explorer Belt to the Baltic States, not just until next year, but it will be programmed now for 2022.
