Battle of Britain flypast over Swindon in September Plans are being made to mark the 75th anniversary year of the Battle of Britain in September and commemorate the life of Swindon pilot Squadron Leader Harold Starr who died on 31 August 1940, eight days before his 26th birthday.

Nazi pilots killed Starr in his parachute after he baled out of his Hurricane over Kent. He is buried at Radnor Street Cemetery, in one of the 103 Commonwealth War Graves. His brother Norman, shot down in 1945 over Dunkirk, and buried in France, is also remembered on his tombstone.

To mark this special anniversary in British history Swindon Heritage is coordinating events which will include: • Tuesday 8 September: Civic Reception at Steam Museum on Harold Starr’s birthday, followed by three days of talks about him, the Battle of Britain and the book, The Secrets of the Spitfire; • Saturday 12 September: Static display in the town centre of lifesize models of a Spitfire and a Hurricane (both of which were built in Swindon). This is subject to business sponsorship; • Sunday 13 September: Family day

Providing furniture to those in need for 5 years, the project is one of just 60 organisations in the UK to meet and comply with an audit by the FRN. It means Gateway is a reliable and legally compliant re-use operation.

Project manager Dawn Prosser, said: “The certification is about the level of our service and recognition of professionalism. It’s a badge of integrity and quality assurance.

“We’re thrilled and want to thank all the volunteers and those who donate furniture who have made this possible.”

The project currently provides around 45 households each month with furniture, white goods and home starter packs which include items such as pots, pans, bedding, towels, crockery and cutlery.

Dawn added: “It’s lovely to be able to help people. Recently a lady moved into a house with her son with special needs. She spent £50 on a sofa at a local charity shop

and then came to us as that’s all she had - and the clothes she was standing in. She was referred for beds and bedroom furniture but we were then able to provide so much more to help her.”

Donations sought: Gateway is always looking for donations of furniture and household items and are particularly in need of cookers, fridge/freezers and washing machines for a growing list of customers, many of whom are young families unable to buy new.

They also take donations of good quality clothing, toys and bridal wear for The Gate shop in Havelock Square which raises funds to keep the project going. To donate, call 01793 683146 or 07714 091 011.

“Earth-bag buildings are particularly good for areas prone to earthquakes. In one village such a centre was the only building left standing after the quakes.

“Our plan is to collect a team of experienced ‘earth-builders’ and volunteers to go out after the rains - probably late September.

Christine with Year 10 students at the Glory School in 2014 Story writer and translator Dr Christine Tipper, from Liden, has been supporting Glory English School in Bhaktapur, east of Kathmandu in Nepal, for the last 4 years, and she’s appealing for help following the earthquakes.

Christine is raising money from a book of the children’s poems, texts and jokes called ‘Writing for GLORY,’ and an e-book of anecdotes about her experiences called ‘Nepalese Nuggets,’ available on Amazon.

She said: “I’m a strong believer in opening doors through education and Glory is unusual as girls have equal opportunity to flourish and shine.

“The school takes a holistic approach - they understand that there is more to education than learning facts. Pupils are encouraged to express themselves through dance, song, music and sport. At Glory hugs, smiles, encouragement are the norm.

“But things have changed since the earthquakes. The majority of pupils lived in those brick and mud houses reduced to mounds of rubble you’ve seen on the news. They’ve lost their homes, their clothes, their food, some have lost family members and friends. One little 7 year old girl, Seena, has lost all five members of her family.

“Pupils have lost their text books, notebooks, pens, pencils. Many parents have lost their income, Glory school will struggle to collect fees and pay its teachers.

“The children are no longer carefree. I receive messages from them showing me the remains of what were their houses. They are afraid to go to sleep in case the earth moves again and they are crushed and they now sleep in the fields.

Spectacular support from shoppers Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group members with Sainsbury’s Bridgemead staff celebrating a record breaking year Members of Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group are stunned by the amount of money raised in a year of partnership with Sainsbury’s Bridgemead.

The group was chosen after staff agreed a shortlist of good causes to support in 2014. Through monthly fundraising initiatives, including shopper bag packs, wrapping Valentine’s and Mother’s Day flowers, a onesie day and tombolas, £13,000 was raised, with the fuel station team contributing £1,225 from a Christmas raffle and a sponsored screen wash. Staff member Christine Baker raised £400 by losing 23lbs in eight weeks.

“We’re really pleased with the total, it’s the highest our store has ever raised,” said community ambassador Simon Belcher.

Group chair Kim West said more than money was involved. “The total is fantastic; it’s a wonderful contribution to our £40,000 a year running costs.

MS Centre makes plan to move upwards Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis has launched a new appeal called ‘Moving on up!’

Swindon Therapy Centre has been a totally self-funded group for nearly 32 years, providing a wide range of physio and complementary therapies, as well as oxygen pressure therapy in a purpose built ‘diving’ tank.

Having moved to Bradbury House on the Rivermead Estate in Westlea in 2010, the centre has almost cleared its mortgage for the ground floor and has come up with a plan to purchase the rest of the building.

This will allow the charity to greatly increase the range of services available to its growing membership.

The move to Westlea meant that the centre has been able to work with people with other neurological conditions such as ME, stroke and Parkinson’s disease and children with a variety of conditions, including brain tumours, cerebral palsy and autism.

As well as a large physiotherapy room where members are helped with personalised exercise programmes, there are Pilates, yoga and other holistic therapies, as well as general advice and support.

West skatepark work starts soon

A computer generated image of the skate park to be built by Wheelscape The building of a skate, bmx and scooter park in West Swindon will start at the end of June.

Hopefully it will be ready for use during part of the summer holidays.

The project was first discussed at the West Swindon Forum in 2012, when a group of young people made a presentation on the need.

Originally the skate park was proposed for Salt Way Fields in Middleleaze but residents living in the vicinity objected. A consultation in 2014 identified the open space off Rivermead Drive, opposite the Renault building as suitable, but work was delayed because extra costs were going to be incurred

since the new location required a lot more work to install drainage and stronger foundations to ensure a high quality, long lasting facility.

Coun Nick Martin, who brought the young people to the forum three years ago, said: “It’s been really disappointing it’s taken three years to deliver. It’s quite a small skatepark, but I’m delighted it’s now happening.

“I’m sorry the skate park is not closer to homes but I urge parents to ensure their children are safe and encourage them to use footpaths, and not walk on the main roads even if it’s a little further.”

Extreme trampoline park plan for Link Centre sports hall Link Centre managers GLL have shelved the idea of relocating the library in the building upstairs and creating a giant ground floor gym, but they are now going to install an Extreme Trampoline Park covering 1,200 square metres.

This means all the community sport and recreation groups, activities and classes will have to be relocated or closed.

It also means the largest climbing wall in the region will be shut down.

GLL, which manages Link Centre under its Better brand, intend the trampoline park to be installed at the end of June. It will be a series of interconnected safety padded trampolines which can be used by up to 100 people at a time.

The project is part of a £2million investment in the centre and will include newly created, dedicated birthday party rooms and a refurbished café.

A relatively new concept in the UK, the trampoline park will be accessible to all sectors of the community offering group events, sports training and children’s party bookings.

ager for Better, said: “The trampoline park will be one of the very first of its kind to launch in the UK. It will be open to everyone regardless of fitness levels, age or experience, with fully trained coaches on hand to provide expert help and advice.”

However the move has horrified Val Hague from Haydon Wick who swims at the centre and plays badminton in the sports hall. “I’ve been a direct debit member for 17 years, but I’ll be looking elsewhere. I imagine hundreds of others will too.

“As an accountant I cannot believe Better are going to risk their underlying subscription income for a new idea that could turn out to be a fad brought in from the USA. “The community is going to lose a central location for fitness classes, basketball, martial arts clubs, badminton, roller hockey, 5-a-side football and kids coaching, wheelchair rugby and disability access days for schools.”

Martin Newman, secretary of Swindon Mountaineering Club, said his members are upset to learn of the closure of The Ridge climbing wall. “Prior to the transfer of Link Centre to Better, the club asked council representatives at the Swin-

“The wall was built with a lottery grant of £74,000 from Sport England. Swindon Mountaineering Club was a key stakeholder when the lottery bid was being prepared, writing a letter of support, accompanying council staff on visits to other climbing walls and commenting on the design, yet we have not been consulted on this decision.

“Climbing is one of the few sports currently growing in popularity and the wall is normally busy.

“This closure might be more understandable if a new alternative had been built in Swindon, that is taking away business, but this is clearly not the case. The Ridge is a good climbing wall and it is the only such facility in Swindon, with the nearest alternatives an hour away in Bristol, Reading or Gloucester.”

There’s a chance to learn about care for children in the town during national Foster Care Fortnight, Monday 1 to Sunday 14 June.

The annual campaign aims to raise awareness of the need and attract new foster carers. This year’s theme is Fostering: Make a Connection.

Finding sufficient numbers of the right carers is a challenge faced by all fostering services, including Swindon.

Across the UK, around 27,000 children will need a foster carer this year alone and the Fostering Network estimates a further 8,600 new foster carers are required to help meet this demand, including 600 in the South West.

Every day, over 63,000 children live with 55,000 foster families across Britain. A shortage of foster carers means some children have to live too far from family and friends, change school and be split up from brothers and sisters. More caring families mean a larger number of children being able to live with the right foster carer and not be moved around the care system.

Swindon Borough Council is part of the national campaign to

encourage more foster carers to help the growing number of young people who are entering the social care system. Foster carer Helen said she had thought about getting in touch with the council’s adoption department for some time. “I just wanted to put something good back into society.

“I thought being single, they wouldn’t want me, but I got some courage up, spoke to some people and they encouraged me to go ahead.

“The support I received made me feel welcome. Swindon do a very good buddy service, so you’re never on your own, you’re always part of the team.

“I would say go for it, I’ve never looked back since I’ve started fostering; I just want to go on further and help more children.”

Ofsted impressed by Catherine Wayte primary under new leadership

The report of an inspection of the primary school in Abbey Meads in March congratulates the leadership team for sustained improvements which support their assessment of a good school.

It says headteacher Emma Brown, pictured above, rapidly built on developments already in place after taking over in January, and ensured the quality of teaching and pupils’ achievement has continued to improve strongly.

The report states that school leaders, managers and staff strive for the best through effective team work.

The inspectors comment that the quality of teaching is rigorous and

teachers receive outstanding support to improve their practice.

Pupils are exceptionally caring and considerate, very polite and welcoming to visitors. The school’s systems for keeping pupils safe are extremely rigorous.

Ms Brown said she was delighted with the report. “We are overwhelmingly pleased and proud and I’d like to thank everybody who has risen to the higher challenge set by Ofsted to all schools.”

Student film about carrying knives has an edge A police dog running down an armed criminal or an officer pulling out a taser is not exactly what you would expect to see on the Swindon College campus.

But for one day only in May, students took part in a project with Wiltshire Police to make two films, as part of FAKE, or Firearm and Knife Education, a scheme to discourage teenage crime.

The police approached the college, and students were tasked with storyboarding the scenarios. Officers then spent a day putting the ideas into action which included a stuntman and police dog Reggie.

The two films edited by the students will be used in Wiltshire schools by the police to educate young people about the consequences of carrying a knife.

Richard Wright, work experience co-ordinator at Swindon College, said: “It was an incredible opportunity for the students to put their skills to practical use and in a professional way for a client. The experience has been invaluable. It’s a win-win for everyone; the police get a video made for them and we gained the experience.”

New North Swindon primary school to be ready for end of year visits

Tadpole Farm Church of England Academy opened in temporary accommodation at Redhouse Community last September and will transfer in time for the new school year.

The construction is being undertaken by Swindon Borough Council, using the increasingly popular Class Solutions timber framed modular building system designed by Nic Newland and Tony Currivan. It

means a primary school can be built for under £5 million instead of £7 to £8 million for a bespoke design.

The academy will have a few special additions including a hall featuring a large ‘church’ window and a high level minstrels gallery where children can perform at concert, or a bishop can give a sermon.

Headteacher Jane Leo said she and the teachers have had an initial tour. “We all think the building is wonderful; we can’t wait to move in.”

Young players are ‘Super Troupers’ Twenty-five young Rising Stars brass players from Great Western Youth Band made their contest debut in late April at the National Youth Brass Band Championships at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Ranging in age from just 6 to 11 years, the Swindon players were the youngest group in the beginners section of the contest alongside six other bands from across the UK. They played a range of music during their fifteen-minute programme,

including the Wallace & Gromit theme, Abba’s ‘Super Trouper’ and the popular brass tune Highland Cathedral.

One of the section adjudicators, Simone Rebello from the RNCM wrote in her comments to the band: ‘A great programme played with polish and flair.’

Becky Shore, inviting parents and children to take a journey into imagination with her Becky Shore, 27, has won the lease to take over the nursery facility at the former Moredon Children’s Centre in Montrose Close after it was closed by Swindon Council in last year’s cutbacks.

She grew up in the community and attended the original Moredon Primary School on the adjacent site.

Following a degree in Early Childhood Studies and gaining professional nursery experience, including management, Becky said it was time to take on the challenge of setting up on her own.

“It’s always been my dream to open my own nursery. I had been looking for the opportunity to run one where I was brought up; the council advertisement to run the nursery came at the perfect time.

“I was very clear in my tender that providing children with a great experience, and involving parents in the way the nursery is run, was my overriding interest, rather than making profits. It’s why I’ve called it

Imagination Day Nursery.

“There were a number of big childcare operators also bidding and I think my approach convinced the council selection panel that the needs of the children should be the top priority.”

Becky has had experience of working with children across the early years age spectrum and also spent a summer on Camp America when she was at college.

Imagination will offer 40 places for two to four year olds, on a full and part-time basis from 8am to 6pm, offering snacks and lunch for children who stay all day.

“My goal is to provide outstanding childcare experience in a natural environment, where children have fun learning and growing, ready to move onto school,” said Becky. “We are all going on a exciting journey together.”

Families, fun and faith will come together on Saturday 20 June for a community fete celebrating a quarter of a century since the start of Freshbrook Evangelical Church.

The free event with a fun-packed programme that includes live music, a puppet show and a barbecue takes place at Millbrook Primary School, Worsley Road, from 2pm to 5pm.

The church originally started in the temporary wooden community centre, before an ambitious group of Christians took it upon themselves to push for a permanent place of worship in Freshbrook.

The original nine members com-

mitted themselves on 15 May 1983 to pursue, campaign, fundraise and pray to make their dreams a reality.

But is was a struggle to acquire the site opposite Freshbrook centre, saved just as the group was about to admit defeat when an anonymous donor gave £40,000.

The same person would later provide another £100,000 towards the building project.

The story of the donations is just one of the many inspiring tales of how people from far and wide were brought together to establish the church. Read more at www.freshbrook.org

Cornerstone Church opens in North Swindon A new church officially started in Priory Vale on Easter Sunday as an offshoot of North Swindon Baptist Church (NSBC).

NSBC was itself a church plant in 1998 to serve the expanding community of North Swindon. It grew from 11 people to over 100 members in 15 years and established firm roots in the community through the provision of Sunday services, a toddler group, children’s club and youth group.

In order to meet the needs of the

growing population, NSBC decided to launch Cornerstone, with the aim of reaching out to Redhouse, Oakhurst, Tadpole Garden Village and beyond. It meets for a Sunday worship service at 10am in Uplands School, off Tadpole Lane.

Swindon photographer wins prestigious Human Rights award A former Swindon resident has won the photography grand prize in the 19th Annual Human Rights Press Awards (HRPA) 2014 organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club (FCC), Hong Kong, Amnesty International Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Journalists Association.

Alex Ogle, a photojournalist with global news agency AFP, covered the ‘umbrella revolution’ democracy protests in the former British colony last October and November, when the world’s attention was focussed on an extraordinary tent city set up on the main road through the island’s central business district.

Alex, who attended Greendown School and Swindon College, entered photographs illustrating the interaction between protestors and police over ten weeks.

The HRPA judges looked at almost 200 images including an awful lot of gas masks and yellow umbrellas.

‘After much deliberation, they gave the grand prize to Alex Ogle of Agence France-Presse for his eight-part series on the demonstrations. The work as a whole focused on the interactions between crowds and the police, and included shots

of officers aiming pepper spray right in the faces of unarmed demonstrators. In what was the strongest image, Ogle closed in on the details of a face dripping with stinging, yellow foam.’

Alex was unable to collect his award in person as he transferred from Hong Kong to the AFP office in New Delhi in early March this year.

The organisers of a festival in Highworth will be asking the ‘Spirit in the Sky’ for good weather on Saturday 11 July.

Wrde Up Festival takes place at the Lower Rec in Highworth and has managed to get Dr and The Medics to headline.

The band had a massive Number One hit in 1986 with a cover of Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit in the Sky. The festival, which is sponsored by Excalibur Communications, will be raising money for Prospect Hospice and Highworth Town Junior Football Club.

Other acts that have already been announced for the day long festival include a Michael Jackson tribute as well as several local performers like Yves, Alice Offley, Tumblin’ Dice and Overload.

The family friendly festival will include balloon modelling, facepainting and circus workshops from Clare’s Circus as well as magician Jack Stephens and musical theatre from Danzone with their funky

Dr and The Medics headline Highworth’s Wrde Up on 11 July freestyle jazz dance.

There will also be fair rides from Billy Danter’s Funfair.

Tickets cost £12 for an adult, £10 for a young adult (16 to 18 years old) with valid NUS card, children £8 and under 11s are free with an accompanying adult.

A family ticket, two adults and two under-18s, costs £36.

Old Town Festival kicks off Commonweal School youngsters to perform at festival Old Town Festival takes place from Saturday 6 June to Sunday 14 June, opening with A Night At The Races in the Commonweal Performing Arts Marquee on The Lawn on 6th.

The main event takes place on Sunday 7 June starting in Wood Street at 10am where there will be entertainment including Commonweal street theatre, cycling races, the official opening ceremony and parade from 11am.

After this it is the Family Fun Day on the Lawn which includes food stalls, a knight school demonstration as well as archery and fairground rides for the kids.

On Sunday 14 June there will be a birthday church service in the bowl from 10am to 2pm. If you need a break then stroll along to Old Town to sample the Foods of the World Trail from 1pm to 6pm.

Environmental writer’s home revamped for summer visits The birthplace and home of Richard Jefferies at Coate has been given a makeover and relaunched as an Arts Council England accredited museum.

With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Swindon Council, the old farmhouse where the writer and naturalist lived from 1848 to 1887 has been taken over by the Richard Jefferies Trust. Members have decorated the interior and created new displays about Jefferies and returned the garden to something he might recognise.

Campaign to safeguard free skatepark A campaign has been launched to make sure that a free skatepark is part of the proposals for the redevelopment of land at the Oasis.

In March revamped plans were revealed by developers Morai that will see a ski slope, a 5,000 capacity arena, a multi-screen cinema, a 10 pin bowling alley and a hotel on the North Star site, next to the Oasis Leisure Centre.

But Diana Kirk, who runs ATBSkate Warehouse at Hawksworth, believes there is no specification in the plans to keep the free open air skatepark that is currently on the site, and has launched an online petition.

She said: “It doesn’t look much, but the Oasis outdoor skatepark is the best in Swindon which people can use for free. There’s always been one at the Oasis since it was built in 1976, but so far the plans show no free outdoor skatepark, BMX track or cycle speedway.

“Children and adults from different walks of life come together daily to use this skatepark.

“We have been approached by operator(s) looking to create an indoor skate park in a safe environment within a high ropes and climbing centre, which we will review once we receive further details of the concept, plans and operations.”

Ms Kirk believes that the skatepark would need to be free as most young people would not be able to afford a paid-for one.

She said: “There are far better free skateparks in Cirencester, Faringdon and Marlborough, so we need to safeguard what we have in Swindon, otherwise there will be nowhere for skaters to go.”

Four Ridgeway School pupils were selected to represent the South West in a regional tournament involving squads from around the UK and Ireland in early May. The players have honed their skills over several years since joining an after-school club at Wroughton Junior School run by Swindon Council coach, Kelly Jones, a Level 3 volleyball coach and ex-GB player.

She said she’s thrilled to see their talent being recognised on a national stage. “They’ve all progressed massively. George is now playing for England and they all come down to

“It is a fantastic achievement to have four representatives at regional level and just shows how much talent we have in Swindon.”

George is one of only 12 players who have been selected to be part of the England beach volleyball training squad that will be competing in international events abroad this summer.

Now the election season is over the consortium of residents’ associations behind the campaign to see Thamesdown Drive linked to the Great Western Way is working with Swindon Council on a business plan to convince central government to support the capital investment of around £40million A draft business case is being discussed by a council cabinet working group which includes TDEX representatives.

“It’s a start in setting out the problems to be solved against the options available,” he said. “It clearly states the need for cycle paths to run the length of any

Swindon Town’s Wembley playoff

Sam Morshead of TotalSwindonSport.com reflects on how Swindon Town’s dream of promotion to the Championship on 24 May vapourised within 20 minutes in a game dominated by Preston North End.

They say insanity is doing the same thing time and time again and expecting different results. When it comes to Wembley, Swindon Town are most certainly losing their minds.

Bank Holiday Sunday’s trip to the national stadium – a third visit in five years – began with less expectation than their other two but ended in total desolation. It was a miserable conclusion to a bizarre and brilliant season.

Town fans are getting used to leaving Wembley first and filtering down the half-mile stretch back to the Tube with the echoes of celebration chasing behind them,

but experience doesn’t make it any easier to take.

Back in the Wembley of old, with its Twin Towers and crumbling walls, Swindon were invincible: three appearances, three victories and enough wonderful memories to last a lifetime.

It’s been 22 years since the last one, though, the towers have been replaced by a galactic arch, hope has been usurped by heartbreak and an entire generation can only associate the north London venue with failure.

Swindon fans were raucous before the game. The Globe on Baker Street and The Torch at Wembley Park became boisterous hives, Wembley Way was soon swamped with red and then, as the players emerged from the tunnel, a giant mosaic – printed above the arms of Town supporters behind one goal – added to the atmosphere.

It’s just as well those who’d made

the trip from Wiltshire had found enough to shout about pre-match.

Within 13 minutes the game was up, as the Robins found themselves two goals down and their captain injured again.

Perhaps that offered some form of consolation; Swindon supporters had plenty of time to digest the inevitable. Some retained that slither of belief that a comeback remained possible – a slither which was flattened when Michael Smith headed wide 30 seconds before Jermaine Beckford added Preston’s third.

Half-time might as well have been full-time, such was the party at one end of Wembley and misery at the other. As much as supporters could search and search and search, they could find no reason to cheer – a harsh and sad denouement to a campaign where cheering has been so surprisingly frequent.

A season of little promise ended in much the same way, despite what happened in between.

No time for over-thinking, no time for contemplation; just get on the Metropolitan Line and get away. Get away from the theatre of doom. Get away from a day that

needs to be forgotten. Just get away.

It wasn’t even worth a look back at the arch, by now shining bright white in honour of the victors.

And yet, should Swindon return in a few years’ time, we’ll all be there again. Praying for a goal, begging the football gods to undo this wretched curse, pleading for the players to perform on the biggest stage.

Because, through temporary insanity, this is still our club.

Citroen Cactus... ... Smoother than you’d think

In his latest car review, GEOFF MAXTED of Drivewrite takes Citroen’s Cactus for a drive The engaging Citroen Cactus has a look all of its own. It has the now famous thermoplastic polyurethane ‘airbumps’ on the body sides that are supposed to be maintenance free but I wonder what they’ll look like in a couple of years and how an owner would keep them looking fresh. If, however, it saves a few quid on repairs, then why not?

The looks are quirky and appealing. It’s a hatchback that will also appeal to the ‘crossover’ market.

In top-of-the-range Flair trim the featured car sported roof rails and wing mirrors in contrast to the purple metallic paint. I would never,

ever specify purple as a colour for a car and yet - it works. It looks great.

Under the bonnet The Cactus came with Citroen’s 1.6L Blue HDi 100hp engine and it’s a good ‘un. Punchy and strong, not quick but on the road it cracks on nicely. Citroen claim around 78mpg but in the real world we only saw just over 50mpg. I reckon that’s pretty good, especially when you link it with CO² at a lowly and tax-busting 89g/km.

Given the fun nature of the car I think I would go for the slightly livelier 110hp petrol engine. There are two less powerful engines on

offer plus a 92hp diesel, but that comes with an ETG6 ‘automated manual’ gearbox about which I have reservations. If you fancy an auto, then make sure you take a thorough test drive first. Personally I’d stick with the five-speed manual which works well. In Flair trim, the Citroen C4 Cactus comes with sensors and a very clear rear camera so parking is straightforward.

On the inside There are three trim levels to choose from: Touch, Feel and Flair; each group adding features. All versions of the Cactus come with a digital speedo and a large touchscreen display, which combine to make the dashboard look very smart and modern. Adding to the appeal are nice touches like the straps to close the doors and the ‘luggage effect’ glove box. Functions like climate control, radio, Bluetooth and so on, are handled through the

touchscreen so there’s a minimum of buttons. There are plenty of options to choose from but it’s worth mentioning the ‘eMyWay’ Sat-nav, which is very good.

I like the interior a lot and found the manually adjustable seats to be comfortable. There’s plenty of space up front and two adults will fit comfortably enough in the back.

The optional panoramic glass roof is a must-have. The interior is refreshingly different and I approve overall.

Verdict Amazingly, I haven’t yet seen too many of these cars around and it is hard to understand why. The 1.6L diesel is great although my choice would be for the petrol engine. This model costs £20,445 but has plenty of kit for the money. On the road the car feels balanced and surefooted at speed, and cruises well. www.drivewrite.co.uk

June youth Mix festival in West Swindon The emerge youth project is again organising The Mix Festival at Shaw Church on Saturday 20 June, 11.30am to 5pm.

This long running community event will have new attractions this year and a distinctly retro feel, with an American diner style café and beach zone with traditional games.

The performance zone will feature songs from the 50’s/60’s with the Golden Oldies, as well as a Disney singalong for all primary school aged children, plus local dance, drama and music groups.

Arts and crafts are high on the menu too, with a pop-art style mural, make a t-shirt, mosaic picture frames, jewellery, card-making, cup cake decorating, badgemaking and much more.

Messy church will offer crafts throughout the day for younger children and there will be an art gallery to exhibit pictures on a Summer holiday theme. These should be no larger than A4 and can be drawn/painted beforehand or created in the art workshop on the day.

Swindon’s Conservative MPs return to Parliament Justin Tomlinson: Thank you to all the North Swindon residents who re-elected me with an increased majority of 11,786. It was the proudest moment of my life.

I am extremely grateful to be able to continue representing my fellow local residents. For those who didn’t vote for me, I respect your views and will continue to stand up for everyone - regardless of their politics.

Returning to Parliament last week was like the first week back at school. The first day is spent working through all the correspondence which has built up during the election, whilst catching up with colleagues and greeting new MPs. It’s an exciting time and I still vividly remember my first day in Parliament. It wasn’t long before I found myself getting lost in the three miles corridors, including an embarrassing wrong turn into the kitchens.

I have spoken to a number of the new MPs and reminded them of the importance of casework - we have an opportunity as an MP to support local residents when it matters most.

After the first day back, it was then reshuffle time as the Prime Minister decided which MPs would serve in the Government.

It was very surreal as I realised this was when the next batch of Ministers were being confirmed, so I arrived at Downing Street and walked past all of the media, with no idea what to expect. After a short wait in reception the Prime Minister invited me in and formally invited me to join the Government as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Disabled People - a Ministerial role within the Department for Work and Pensions.

I am so proud to have been given this opportunity and will do my very best to make a difference, drawing on my experience of working with, and supporting many fantastic local organisations and charities in this field, right here in Swindon.

I will never forget my priority is representing North Swindon, and I am still as enthusiastic today as I was when first elected in 2010. To be re-elected and promoted within a week has been a real whirlwind and thank you again to everyone who has supported me, I really do appreciate it.

Robert Buckland: When I became your MP in 2010, Swindon was a town at the crossroads. The worst recession of modern times had hit us hard, and unemployment was stubbornly high.

We are now a town on the up.

The regeneration of Swindon’s town centre is now underway, with new developments creating jobs and attracting businesses. Unemployment has fallen by more than 60 per cent and opportunities for young people via apprenticeships, new school and college facilities in Swindon have increased. Funding has already been secured for other developments, including a new bus station. More than £100m has been secured to improve our roads and local infrastructure. Hundreds of families in South Swindon have benefited from the Help To Buy scheme, and funding has been increased for community health services by £20m, plus extra funding for GP services.

Vital law reforms have also been secured for carers and people with disabilities, vulnerable children, and victims of stalking and domestic abuse.

with thanks to the voters and fought hard to retain my role as South Swindon’s MP. It is an honour and a privilege to represent the people of Swindon, and I am delighted to have been re-elected. To everyone who voted for me and who worked so hard as part of a positive Conservative campaign, my thanks.

The Prime Minister has asked me to continue my work as Solicitor General, which I am very happy to do.

I have now re-started my regular local advice surgeries and am already supporting organisations and events. It was great to see the Old Town Festival Committee launch the Festival at Commonweal School, and to hear its choir in the Town Gardens. I have also been speaking to members of the Nepali community about the earthquakes that have touched so many.

I am grateful for the opportunity

to carry on the hard work, and am looking forward to implementing my five-point plan for the town to: • Push forward the Thamesdown Drive extension and improvements to the Great Western Way to transform the road system.

• Keep promoting Swindon as a great place to do business, attracting more high quality jobs to our town and building on the huge unemployment reduction.

• Enhance our local NHS so that our hospital, GPs and social care providers work together to provide an even higher quality local service.

• Fight inappropriate development but support the new homes Swindon needs in accordance with our Local Plan.

• Increase local choice in education to further drive up standards and give young people the skills they need for the future.

Youth MP calls for votes for under 16s Ellie James, Member of Youth Parliament for Swindon, coordinated the mock election at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy and says she was pleased by how young people were engaged in discussing the national issues.
