Town’s tired image receives welcome makeover Brand new boundary signs welcoming drivers to Swindon have appeared on major routes into the borough, replacing the weather-worn examples that have been in place for around 19 years.

The 12 new signs feature the official Swindon coat of arms and highlight the town’s twinning relationship

Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr David Renard said: “Our boundary signs had become increasingly tatty; everyone agreed they weren’t the best advert for Swindon.

“Within the strict regulations for highway signage we’ve taken the opportunity to have a clean, clear and consistent design which reminds everyone of our longstanding and valued links with other towns elsewhere in the world.”

Cllr Stan Pajak, a driving force in establishing the Torun link some years ago, said: “I am so pleased my call for new boundary signs including our Polish partner city has finally been realised.

They both promote our town to visitors and show the pride we have in it.”

The long running provision organised by a volunteer committee came to an end in February after demand dropped off and the cook left.

Neil McNally stepped in to relaunch the club as a social enterprise. He said: “There was a fantastic response in the first few weeks and we’ve had lots of positive comments about the meal which is prepared and cooked on the day by Clive Williams.

“We now welcome a wider age range; the aim is to get people talking to each other over good food.

You don’t have to book in advance, just turn up and enjoy a lunch.”

Tina Mackie, who set up the original senior citizens lunch club which ran for ten years, said: “I’m glad the lunch club has been revived by Neil; it’s an important part of the

“I like the idea there are younger people now enjoying lunch. The meals are really tasty which is why I’d encourage anybody on their own to come along and enjoy it.”

The two course meal, including tea, coffee or a soft drink costs just £3.90. The club meets every Wednesday from 12 noon.

Businesses back two charities Swindon Cares has officially unveiled the two charities they will raise money for over the next two years: Hop, Skip & Jump and Discovering Autistic Spectrum Happiness (DASH).

The High Sheriff of Wiltshire Lady Gooch and the deputy mayor of Swindon Cllr Andrew Bennett joined members of Swindon Cares at the Tawny Owl in Taw Hill for the announcement on 17 April.

Swindon Cares is made up of businesses in the town who organise fundraising events for the public. Since it started in 2003, over £215,000 has been raised for charitable, community and voluntary organisations in the town.

Hop Skip & Jump from their base at Upper Shaw Farm in West Swindon provides support for children with additional needs, from complex physical conditions to special educational needs and behavioural problems, as well as respite help for hard pressed parents.

A new free advice and information service has started on a six month trial at Toothill Community Centre and residents are encouraged to use it or lose it.

Following the closure of the advice centre at West Swindon Family Centre, for lack of funding, the centre received a grant from Zurich to start the service for Toothill residents.

Enterprise driver helps create 200 new jobs Outset Swindon, the organisation that helps people facing the biggest barriers to enterprise, hosted an event on Thursday 16 April to celebrate the creation of 200 new jobs in the town.

The Outset programme specialises in offering initial information and advice on developing a business project, and business start-up support for people such as the long-term unemployed, ethnic minority groups, women, under 25s and people with physical or mental disabilities.

The event took place at The Platform on Faringdon Road and brought together project funders and partners to meet some of the new start-ups that have been created by the scheme. Refreshments were provided by Outset clients Little Miss Cake Maker and Pamusha African Fusion.

The occasion was an opportunity to announce the results of Outset’s Social Return on Investments analysis, independently conducted

Prospect skydive worth the weight Vicky Reade from Penhill, whose plans to make a parachute jump in aid of Prospect Hospice were featured in the February magazine, achieved her goal on 22 March. But not without a struggle.

Before she could overcome her fear of heights, Vicky had to shed 28lbs. The memory of her late grandfather the well known Swindon folksinger Mervyn Penny drove Vicky on to lose the necessary weight.

She said: “I’m so pleased to have been able to help Prospect Hospice; they gave such wonderful support to my grandad and I wanted to do something in his memory.

“The tandem jump was a challenge

but not as scary as I thought it would be.”

Meeting ratchets up pressure for relief road Sixty people attended a meeting on 14 April at Peatmoor Primary School to discuss the campaign to see a link road built between Thamesdown Drive and Great Western Way. The results of a survey published in the Link and online were also announced - see opposite.

Organised by Thamesdown Drive Extension Campaign group (TDEX), in conjunction with Shaw Residents’ Association and Link magazine, the meeting was also attended by several local and national candidates standing in the 7 May elections.

Over the last ten years Mead Way has been turned into Swindon’s western by-pass. A presentation by Kevin Fisher, chair of Shaw Residents’ Association, demonstrated that over the next ten years about 3,000 houses will be built which will have a major impact on West Swindon.

Combined with greater economic activity at employment areas off Mead Way, the volume of traffic will increase considerably.

Link survey gives a voice to the people Nearly 400 readers took the opportunity to express their views about the chronic traffic congestion in West Swindon and the increase predicted for the future.

The TDeX campaign wants Swindon Council to make a better case to Government that a link road between Thamesdown Drive and Great Western Way needs to be funded and built as soon as possible. This includes a spur road to improve access to Cheney Manor Industrial Estate.

Until now, nobody has given ordinary people a say about what they think should be done. Sponsored

by Link magazine, the survey was compiled by Kevin Fisher of Shaw Residents’ Association (SRA) who analysed 393 responses submitted online and via the paper survey forms printed in the March Link.

The results are: • The overwhelming majority, 93 per cent want it built now.

• 87 per cent say the construction of the road is very or extremely important.

• 51 per cent say the efforts to satisfy this so far by Swindon Council are insufficient.

• 91 per cent want the road built

A light traffic day on Mead Way within 6 years, (although a 10 year timescale is a more likely reality).

• 46 per cent of people say manage the environmental impact, but build the road and another 37 per cent say the wider benefits outweigh any concerns.

• There is no majority view on what should be done with Mead Way, though 45 per cent say it should be converted to dual carriageway (Swindon Council has ruled this option out). There is limited support for filter lanes at roundabouts and traffic lights at some of them.

• There was no consensus regarding changes to Akers Way. • 52 per cent of respondents drive

during morning rush hour on four or five mornings a week; 51 per cent in the afternoon.

• 10 people expressed objections to the link road being built stating it will impact the environment and encourage more car use, leading to more congestion on Great Western Way and at Bruce Street Bridges.

Rather than build a new road there should be more money spent on public transport and cycle road improvements.

At the TDeX meeting Kevin said: “It’s essential for Swindon Council to make the case to the Government for the investment.

“If you believe the congestion

is bad now it is going to get a lot worse. From an earlier SRA survey we believe most of the through traffic on Mead Way is going or coming from the M4. Extending Thamesdown Drive cannot be seen in isolation, improvements to Great Western Way will be required to aid traffic flow.”

TDeX representatives are involved with a Swindon Council cabinet members action committee to find a way forward. After the Peatmoor meeting on 14 April, Swindon cabinet member for infrastructure Cllr Dale Heenan told Link that he expected to present the committee with a first draft of a business plan to make the case to Government for financial investment in the road by the end of April.

Make a difference in your community Volunteers provide vital support to organisations in Swindon and the people they help. This month there is a range of opportunities to get involved with.

The British Red Cross is looking for assistance for their Home from Hospital service in Swindon, which supports patients when they are discharged from hospital.

Volunteers provide practical support such as shopping, collecting prescriptions or preparing a simple snack. They also help to rebuild confidence and provide valuable companionship and a friendly listening ear.

Volunteers are asked to give a couple of hours a week for up to 6 weeks after discharge.

Age UK Wiltshire is also looking for befriending volunteers for isolated older people either by visiting or phoning regularly.

The contact can vary from a chat in the client’s home, a trip out for coffee, or going along to an existing community club, it just depends on the people involved.

In July and August Swindon Libraries will again be running their popular Summer Reading Challenge. People are needed to support children, helping with enrolment,

Myaware, Wiltshire Support Group, supports and informs sufferers and families with one of the myashenias, a group of muscle weakening diseases which can be fatal and for which there is no cure. It is controlled by strict medication which the sufferer has to take for life.

intensive care the next, needing a respirator to breathe.

Sue brings passion for learning to Isambard with new head role Acting head Sue Banks has been officially named as the new principal of Isambard Community School.

The experienced teacher has been at the centre of Isambard’s school life since it opened eight years ago, as deputy head under former principal Rachael Matty who retired last July.

The decision to promote Mrs Banks, who had been in the ‘acting’ role ever since, was revealed by the governors at the end of March in a letter to parents stating that they had voted unaminously to appoint her to the position.

She is now looking forward to pushing ahead with plans to improve the school that include strengthening ties with the local community.

She said: “I wasn’t given an easy ride. I had to interview for the job like everybody else and fit it around my existing duties as if I was applying from outside of the school.

“I had made it a condition of me being in the acting head role that I would not be handcuffed into just being a caretaker and was able to proceed with significant changes.”

An Ofsted inspection carried out last November flagged up that the school required improvement but

praised the actions of the interim leadership team led by Mrs Banks putting forward some significant changes to get things back on track.

“The Ofsted report , although negative, was actually better than we expected and we are doing all we can to address the issues that were raised,” she said.

“One thing that I’ve learnt during my time is that the teachers themselves should always have that passion for learning. My background subject is science but when I first started with Mrs Matty back in 2003 in Luton, she told me that my subject would be food technology

- something that I knew nothing about and it was completely outside of my comfort zone. I threw myself into it and I managed to get a distinction.

“It made me realise that I had a passion for learning and that invigorated me as a teacher. This is something that I want my staff to have as well.”

Mrs Banks spent most of her career in Birmingham at the same school and only left to start in Luton once her children had left school themselves.

Since September she has introduced several plans including setting in maths and a policy called ‘behaviour from learning’ which no longer allows low level disruption in class and there are now plans to revamp the rewards structure for

pupils as well as giving them more say.

Mrs Banks said: “My focus is on making this school as great as possible. At the moment I am looking for consistency throughout the school. We might be doing well in one subject but we need to be doing well in all of them.

“We also need to strengthen our ties with the community. At the moment we have space for more pupils and we want parents to see us as the good school that we are so that they send their children here and not drive them miles to another when they can walk or cycle within the local community.

“That will hopefully come with time as they see things improving.

As our school motto says there’s ‘no end of possibilities’.”

White Rabbit drops in for Ofsted party

To celebrate their rating as Good by Ofsted, youngsters at Hazelwood Academy in Toothill enjoyed a private screening of Home at Cineworld on Shaw Ridge on 26 March, and nursery children entered the world of Alice in Wonderland where they encountered the White Rabbit in their search for Easter Eggs.

The Ofsted inspectors found that Hazelwood is a good school in all areas of work and particularly praised the leadership of headteacher, Suzanne Lloyd, who joined

the school in April 2013, and the team she has built around her.

The report commented: “The good quality of teaching, including the teaching of reading, writing and mathematics, has led to pupils’ increasingly good progress since the academy opened.”

Blunsdon St Andrew Parish Council has taken over care and maintenance of 10 play areas in Abbey Meads, Groundwell West, Redhouse and St Andrews Ridge from Swindon Borough Council.

Parish Council chair Ian Jankinson said a programme of investment will take place over the next year.

“We will be replacing some old and broken equipment and making good damaged and worn surfaces, as well as giving them a good clean.

“There has been a lack of investment by the borough recently, so we have made plans to put in place a regime of checking and litterpicking, as well as bringing the play areas back up to a good standard.

“We have had some good feedback already from residents about how to improve things so if you have any ideas please contact us.”

This year’s parish precept has been agreed and despite the council having to budget for the care and maintenance of these play areas, and a previous over-calculation of occupied properties by Swindon Borough Council, the increase is just 30p per Band D household per year.

At £18.73, an increase of under 2 per cent, Blunsdon St Andrew is still one of the lowest cost parishes in the Swindon area.

Parish takes over play spaces

Blunsdon St Andrew Parish Council elections will take place at the same time as the General Election.

The council comprises 13 parish councillors representing the Abbey Meads ward (about half of Abbey

GLL, the charity which now manages Swindon Council’s leisure centre under its Better brand, wants to assure users of the Haydon Centre that current user groups will continue to be accommodated.

Organisers of Busy Fingers, the long running parent and toddler group, junior and youth club at the centre, are worried that GLL wants to turn the hall they use into a gym.

Better regional manager Paul Sherman said: “We’re unable to discuss plans until the council has agreed, but I can say every user group will be retained at Haydon, nobody is to be evicted. Once we’ve talked with the landlord, we’ll be holding a public consultation.”

But Busy Fingers group coordinator Debbie Musa-Eigee who is concerned for the future said: “The small community hall allows us to bring the outdoors inside with slides, trampoline and bikes; it’s the right size of room with good storage for a range of toys to make sessions interesting for children and parents.

“Community halls in North Swindon are in short supply. With the closure of Childrens’ Centres, parents and toddlers need places to go. It will be very disappointing if the council and GLL believe a gym will outweigh the needs of the community groups that use the room.

Roger Mugridge working with Crowdys Hill children Youngsters from Crowdys Hill Special School have continued to help special needs children in Zambia in a practical way.

For a second year they’ve taken part in a workshop run by Swindon charity Lights for Learning. Twenty students assembled and tested LED light boxes that will be powered by solar panels connected to car batteries. The boxes were labelled with the name of the student who made it, and each completed an all-about-me booklet for children in Zambia who will send back messages.

Crowdys Hill teacher Doug Staff will be travelling to Zambia in May to work with colleagues as part of the school’s global partnership and will fit the lighting units to Kamwi Primary School with local help during his visit.

The Lights for Learning system was invented by Roger Mugridge from Cricklade and since 2001 he and volunteers in the charity have paid their way to travel to Zimba-

bwe, Zambia and Kenya to fit solar lighting units to dozens of schools in villages which don’t have mains electricity. It means children have the opportunity to learn well into the evening and adults are able to engage in education or take part in community activities in remote areas after the sun has gone down.

Roger said: “It was amazing how quickly the children assembled the 94 boxes. They were so enthusiastic about helping, but made sure they did the job right.

“It’s really lovely that they are also able to send personal messages to the children who will benefit from being able to learn after dark.”

The Rotary Club of Cirencester donated £1,000 to fund the project which will see three classrooms and an office at Kamwi outside the city of Livingstone fitted with lights.

Roger will be travelling to the country later in the year to set up a solar power assembly workshop.

The Mayor of Swindon reopens the Richard Jefferies Museum at Coate for the summer on Tuesday 28 April to raise the profile of Swindon’s famous poet.

Heritage magazine remembers one of the few

Plans afoot to mark 175 years The birth of Swindon’s railway works almost 175 years ago has been confirmed as the catalyst for a series of celebrations throughout the town in 2016.

The February Link first revealed that plans were being made to mark the town’s railway heritage, and to involve everyone in reflecting on how we arrived at where we are now, and to look to the future.

On 25 February 1841, new Swindon was born when directors of the Great Western Railway authorised the building of a railway repair works in Wiltshire, after a site was identified by Daniel Gooch as the ideal location.

A year’s worth of celebrations are being planned including bringing back the iconic Swindon made locomotive King George V, exhibitions at Steam Museum, a commemorative pocket watch designed by Old Town jewellers Deacons and a special ale brewed by Arkells.

Now in its third year of publication, Swindon Heritage magazine continues to delve into the town’s deep and fascinating history, telling the stories of both local and national heroes, writes Frances Bevan.

Muralist, painter and Swindon treasure Ken White, creator of Virgin Airlines emblem the Scarlet Lady, has featured on the cover of Swindon Heritage, as has Swindon born suffragette Edith New who famously broke windows at 10 Downing Street. The forthcoming magazine features another local hero, fighter pilot Harold Morley Starr.

In July 1940 warfare took to the skies as the German Luftwaffe launched an air campaign to destroy the British Royal Air Force and especially its beating heart, Fighter Command.

As the Blitz raged in the skies above British cities, wartime leader Prime Minister Winston Churchill stood up in the House of Commons and delivered some of his bestremembered words: ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much

owed by so many to so few.’

And as the country prepares to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain Swindon Heritage honours one of The Few, and tells the story of Harold Morley Starr.

Also included in the summer edition is an update of events in

Radnor Street Cemetery where the Community Payback team is getting to grips with brambles and overgrown shrubs to reveal yet more monuments, while volunteers from the Kingshill Area Residents’ Association are adopting neglected graves and keeping the weeds at bay.

Non-celebrity surprises at the Swindon Festival of Literature: 4 to 16 May Known names are known because they have made it - onto television, radio, and into the newspapers and each year, we have a number of these in Swindon. This year is no exception, writes festival director Matt Holland.

Appearing on 13 May is Rory Bremner, who will doubtless provide post-election impressions that satirise prominent politicians and hold them humorously to account.

Radio 4 presenter and author Sandi Toksvig will quip her way for an hour on stage at the Wyvern on 5 May.

Rory Bremner, at the festival in association with Swindon Link And Nell McAndrew will skip her way round Lydiard Park on the 4 May before giving a talk on the joys of running.

But hidden in the pages of the festival programme are a host of other fascinating events, with authors you may never have heard of, but are just waiting to be found by the discerning reader.

For example, on 5 May at the Arts Centre, three mothers who are successful authors and who have disproved the notion that having children stops you writing, will be telling how they did it and present samples of their work.

On 7 May at the same venue,

there is a Festival first: a book about boxing. London-based author Anna Whitwham will be in conversation with Swindon-based trainer of boxers Paddy Fitzpatrick. This event offers an insight into the philosophy of this noble art.

Talking of art, with culture-loving Swindonians getting excited about the possible creation of a cultural quarter in town, it’s timely that two eminent lovers of the arts, Robert Hewison and Julian Spalding, will be addressing key questions at the Arts Centre on 12 May. And on 15th, Suzannah Lipscomb, right, a fine philosopher who defies stereotype, will address the question of how we think about things today.

Earlier the same day, zoologist Jules Howard will be explaining how a thousand million years ago, life on Earth suddenly became more interesting, colourful, and combative, thanks to sex!

These are just some of the fascinating non-celebrity surprises at this year’s festival.

How healthy is the town; what’s the level of wellbeing? Intuitive Therapy Swindon’s Health and Wellbeing Board has produced the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) for 2014/15, providing an overview of the current and future health and wellbeing needs of people in the Borough.

Some of the key Swindon facts in the document include: • Average life expectancy is 79.3 years for males and 82.7 years for females, relating to 2010 to 2012 figures, which is similar to the national average; • 96.2 per cent of girls aged 12 to 13 received all three doses of the HPV vaccine, the highest coverage in the country, relating to 2012/13 figures; • 2,911 babies were born in 2013, 28 born to women aged under 18 and 85 to women aged 40 or above; • Sport provides an estimated £91.2m in added economic value through improved quality and length of life plus avoided health care costs.

Overall, evidence shows that in many ways the health of Swindon’s population is similar to England as

Town fans now fitter to enjoy football Swindon Town Football in the Community are delighted to be seeing less of their fans following the success of the Football Fans in Training programme, writes Sam Morshead.

The initiative, which started in January, has encouraged supporters aged 35 and above with a waistline of 38 inches or more to shed pounds, and it’s been delivered with excellent results.

Ten weeks into the process, 30 participants have been involved in physical activity sessions and structured workshops, covering diet and nutrition, with all those taking part noticing effects on their weight.

Trust manager Jon Holloway said: “It has been an amazing couple of months with all of the guys showing

great commitment and dedication to improve their health and lifestyles in general.

“They were all issued with STFC kit at the start and now very much feel part of something special.”

As a bonus, first-team manager Mark Cooper joined the group to reiterate the importance of keeping fit both physically and mentally.

The next course commences in September, in time for particpants to enjoy the next season, whichever league the club is playing in.

Organiser Diana Kirk said: “The aim was to celebrate how guys and girls are going out and doing something they enjoy, which is keeping them fit and active. We had 100 competitors from Swindon and also as far away as Bristol and Oxford.

“Throughout the day there were

well over 300 people watching the competition; we had great help from parents to put on the event and it was lovely to see so many grandparents cheering on the youngsters.

“The kids really had to push themselves hard; there were some amazing tricks, and every time they came off the noise was just amazing. There was a fantastic atmosphere and a great spirit amongst the competitors.”

Wheelchair rugby players picked for England Five Swindon St George players have been called up to the England Wheelchair Rugby League training squad ahead of the European Championships.

Martin Lane, Robert McLeod, Kelvin Jones, Scott Jones and 15-yearold Commonweal pupil Billie-Ellen Batten have been included in the 21-strong party.

The group will be whittled down to 10 in the build-up to the championships, which are to be held at Medway Park from 23 to 26 September, first by call-ups to the GB squad for the Test series with France and then by a final selection process.

St George chairman and coach Tony Ellis said: “We’re a club that started less than four years ago and to have the lion’s share of an England training squad for a European Championships is just monumental.”

As assistant coach with the England set-up, Ellis had an input into the make-up of the side but he stressed that club members are definitely in the squad on merit.

“We’re becoming a beacon for the sport in the south west. Proud doesn’t even come close to how I’m feeling.”

Swindon Fencing Club wins five county titles Swindon Fencing Club returned from the recent Wiltshire County Fencing Championships with five county titles.

Eighty-five children competed in a variety of age groups at the event, which was held at Sarum Academy in Salisbury, and Swindon picked up gold medals in the under 14, under 12 and under 10 categories for boys and the under 10 and under 12 groups for girls.

Swindon Council deputy leader Brian Mattock presents Paul with his award Boxing coach and former ABA light heavyweight champion Paul Rogers was recognised for his contribution to young people in the town at the Mayor’s Pride of Swindon Awards 2015 in April.

As a volunteer at Scrappers Boxing Gym and Community Fitness Centre Paul dedicates his time alongside a team of coaches to work with children, young people, adults and people with disabilities. He also visits schools to encourage youngsters to participate in boxing, delivers non-contact boxing skills classes at Swindon Academy, Lydiard Park Academy, Riverside School and to several groups across the town.

Some of the young people Paul works with are disadvantaged and are close to exclusion from mainstream education. The non-contact boxing classes teaches fitness skills, self-discipline and confidence.

Paul said: “Whether you’re a child or an adult you get individual attention and training at Scrappers Gym, we teach and help everyone personally according to their ability.”

The gym is a project managed by Swindon Children’s Scrapstore and is located at the rear of 24HR Gym in Hillmead, West Swindon.

Festival to get people fit and healthy The early burst of summer in April gave us a hint (hopefully) of what’s to come and May’s Swindon Walking Festival aims to get people together to enjoy the outdoors in each other’s company.

During May there will be one-off events and weekly guided walks on offer. From wildlife strolls to fitness trails, Nordic walking and health walks, there will be short (under five mile) walks around different parts of the borough.

All the various groups walk at a different pace, so there’s something for everyone, no matter how fit you are says Cathy Compton, volunteer Swindon health walks leader. “You don’t have to be super fit to join one of our groups, we welcome people of all abilities, and joining a group is a great way to discover new places to walk and socialise.

“We follow different routes each week and I’ve noticed that people gradually lose weight, increase their confidence and become less reliant on medication after walking with our group over a number of weeks.”

The festival launches at a ‘Get Walking Day’ at Coate Water on Saturday 2 May, with a pleasant 3

to 4 mile hour-long guided walk around the lake from 11am.

Visitors will be able to meet the walk leaders, discover new walking routes, and browse stalls to pick up healthy lifestyles tips. Pedometers will also be available for everyone who joins this walk or any of the festival walks (subject to availability).

New weight loss support group

A Moredon woman is creating an informal meet-up to help people who are depressed about being overweight.

Vicky Cammack, 32, used to be more than seventeen and a half stone but is now ten and a half, and has dropped from a 24 dress size to a size ten.

She decided to really do something about her weight after being disgusted by a picture of herself in 2012 and having been on yo-yo diets for years.

Her strategy was to lose weight slowly through healthy eating and exercise so that her body adjusted properly.

She is now organising an informal monthly meet-up for those in a similar situation and wants people to get in touch.

She said: “I strongly feel that there isn’t enough long term support for people who are struggling to lose weight and then maintain the loss. I want to arrange a once a month in-

In his latest car review, GEOFF MAXTED of Drivewrite takes the versatile Peugeot for a spin

The revised Peugeot 5008 – a new family favourite The term Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) is not one that sets the pulse racing yet it helps if the MPV in question is also a decent driver and, in the case of the Peugeot 5008, this is certainly so.

Out On The Road The 5008 impressed with the level of performance available from a strong 2.0L HDi motor delivering 148bhp. Personally, the steering is too light for my tastes but it is accurate. Peugeot reckon the MPV will take just ten seconds to reach the magical 62mph. Certainly, response is lively and driving is much more pleasurable than the dull MPV title suggests. I rate this engine highly, but, inevitably, there is a penalty to pay in emissions at 140g/km. There’s a good selection of alternate, less powerful engines available including Peugeot’s frugal 1.6L BlueHDi 120 which emits just 109g/km Road manners are good and the ride is composed even on our neglected country lanes. There was inevitably a small amount of body roll but the supportive seats held us in place without issue. Under normal driving conditions I doubt anyone will notice.

Inside the 5008 The tested car is a top-ofthe-range model in Allure trim.

Although list prices start around £19,000 for the entry level Access trim, with Active being the next step up, Allure is the one to go for if you can reach to about £25k. It adds bigger alloys, a Cielo Panoramic Glass Roof (with electric blind), climate control, cruise and the really first class Peugeot Connect navigation. This provides Bluetooth and one of the nicest sat-navs I

have used.

Additionally, there is an adjustable ‘heads-up’ display right in the driving eyeline that shows your road speed and works in conjunction with the navigation to show the next required manoeuvre.

Overall, the interior is roomy and comfortable. The cloth seems hard-wearing but I would choose to go the whole hog and take the leather option. The 5008 is a sevenseater and has some nice touches.

There’s a security cubby beneath the driver’s seat and under the floor of the second row. Between the front seats under a sliding lid is the deepest cubby I’ve ever come across.

The Seats The whole point of a MPV is versatility. In the Peugeot 5008 this is very much the case. The three second row seats are individual and can be folded flat individually or in tandem. Nestled under the floor in the boot is the third row of seats which are simplicity itself to erect.

The front seat folds too.

The Verdict The Peugeot 5008 MPV is well judged, smart and has kerb appeal.

There are, as ever, many many options to choose from. It’s a doddle to park as it bristles with sensors and a clear, functional reversing camera.

The 5008 drives well,thanks to a taut ride and handling that makes it seem like a smaller car. It is intelligently configured and has a capacious boot. The Peugeot competes well on price, is more attractive than one particular competitor and has the most versatile seating of them all. A fine choice for family motoring. www.drivewrite.co.uk

Hilary, who runs West Swindon based dog boarding business Wagging Tails, is one of three finalists and is up against franchisees from national fast food chain McDonalds and bookkeepers Rosemary Bookkeeping.

Hilary launched her Wagging Tails franchise in April 2014 giving dogs in the Swindon area their very own holiday when their owners are away. Guest dogs stay in the homes of specially selected carers, all of whom are experienced dog owners, licensed by their local councils and fully insured.

Hilary’s service has received huge demand. She said: “To be nominated for an award for doing something that is so rewarding is fantastic and to be in the company of a globally recognised brand like McDonalds is incredible. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

The 2015 winners will be announced at the EWIF awards ceremony which takes place on Tuesday 12 May at the RBS Building, London.

Fun dog event The RSPCA Fun Dog Show takes place on Monday 25 May at The Westcott Recreation Ground in Wootton Bassett Road.

Registration begins at 10am and judging commences at 11am. The classes include most handsome dog, best junior handler, dog most like its owner, waggiest tail and prettiest bitch.

Only dogs who are over six months old can enter.

By Imogen Beckhelling Swindonian Audrey Cowley has been crowned Pet Carer of the Year for dedication and devotion to the care of her diabetic cat Symba The awards were launched as part of Pet Diabetes Month, which aimed to celebrate the commitment it takes to successfully manage the condition in pets.

It was Audrey’s vet who recognised the extraordinary efforts she makes to care for her cat and nominated her.

Despite suffering from motor neurone disease (MND), leaving Audrey with various functional difficulties, such as being unable to walk and talk without difficulty, has succeeded in managing Symba’s

diabetes for nearly five years.

She said: “I’m thrilled to have won this award and will cherish the professional photos of Symba forever.”

The event was supported by MSD Animal Health, who offer a range of veterinary pharmaceuticals and services to pet owners, farmers and animal health professionals.

He writes: Most people’s knowledge of hypnosis comes from things they have heard or seen on television. The truth is far less dramatic. There’s no hocus-pocus or mind control, and a hypnotherapist certainly has no control or power over a client.

Hypnosis is simply a very effective method of relaxing a person to such an extent that allows access to part of your brain you can’t usually get to, the part that can help us to achieve the things we might be struggling with.

The most common type of hypnotherapy is called suggestion therapy.

This is where, during hypnosis, the therapist suggests new behavioural patterns to the client, and because of the hypnotic state, these sug-

gestions go into the sub-conscious where they are most effective.

Examples of this are things like weight loss, driving test nerves, interviews, wedding speeches, and even fear of flying.

Hypnosis in the form of hypnoanalysis can also be very effective with long-standing anxieties and more wide ranging personal issues.

This work is more involved but is also very rewarding.

If you are considering seeing a hypnotherapist, try to find one that is either recommended by someone you know or belongs to a professional body such as the IAEBP. When the job was commissioned it was thought only the wooden bed of the bridge had to be replaced after nearly 30 years of use. However

contractors found the foundations needed more attention than first envisaged and the balustrades were in a poor condition and needed replacing.

Apart from the original steelwork the bridge is almost completely new.

“Is this superfast broadband for all or is it just fantasy?”

Community campaigner and council irritant Des Morgan has a moment of rhapsody about the recent announcement by Swindon Council of UKB’s superfast broadband for all using a fixed wireless system Whilst reading the latest Link magazine (April) I was also listening to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and was taken by the words ‘Is this the real life - Is this just fantasy?’

- the irony of which struck me as I considered Cllr Garry Perkin’s comments on the number of households which would benefit from the third incarnation of the plan to extend broadband coverage across the borough.

According to Cllr Perkins, ‘99.4 per cent of households will get superfast broadband when before they couldn’t.’ Really?

Well not really at all as Cllr Perkins and officers have failed to account for exactly how many households are currently signed up to a superfast package, or who could do so but have chosen not to.

It is correct for the council to suggest that UKB network could be the answer to rural broadband

deprivation but incorrect to suggest that their network and technology will make much difference to existing urban broadband users.

Back in the mists of time - 2012 to be precise - residents were told the post Digital City UK Broadband 4G LTE service in Swindon was to be launched in two phases. Phase 1 would offer a range of superfast wireless broadband services to residents and businesses as a flexible alternative to fixed line broadband services and would be available to order from 8 October 2012.

It was estimated that the UKB network would allow over 67,000 households and 2,600 businesses in Swindon to access superfast broadband via a 4G box that can be plugged into any power socket, therefore reducing the need for a home telephone line. It sounds remarkably similar to the new

proposal which is for a box to be placed on an outside wall and probably powered by being plugged into any power socket.

Is the council aware of what it is signing up to, or worse, did it actually mislead residents in 2012? According to council leader David Renard: ‘The solution UKB has proposed for the Superfast Extension Programme is different from what currently exists, in that it is fixed wireless.’

And yet in November 2012 the council claimed that the UKB system had gone live on 8 October 2012 with the 4G LTE implementation providing fixed wireless high speed superfast broadband.

Unless I am mistaken this appears to suggest the fixed wireless system installed in 2012 is the same fixed wireless system as is being proposed today.

But of course that could be an idle fantasy.
