LEADING UNITED STATES CONGRESSMAN HOYER APPLAUDS GHEP ON ITS COMMUNITY HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM For Immediate Release RIVERDALE, MD. – December 30, 2015 - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer, one of the leading and most-powerful members of the United States Congress, has applauded the Maryland-based Global Health and Education Projects, Inc. (GHEP) on the organization’s novel Communities Organized for Health and Environment (COHEN) program aimed at protecting the environment and human health in local communities in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

In a letter to GHEP’s leadership, Congressman Hoyer who is the Democratic Whip for the 114th US Congress expressed his pleasure on the organization’s efforts and projects through COHEN that support environmental friendly infrastructure in the Washington DC metro area and beyond.

“By encouraging environmental consciousness while supporting community expansion, your organization has proven that green initiatives are great community investments,” wrote Congressman Hoyer about GHEP COHEN program that is funded through a competitive grant award from the Chesapeake Bay Trust (CBT).

In his response, GHEP Executive Director Dr. Romuladus E. Azuine expressed the organization’s gratitude to Congressman Hoyer for his message of congratulations and encouragement. “As our representative, we are elated on your reaching out to commend us on

this grant award. Your letter bears testimony to your care o f the communities that you serve,” said Dr. Azuine.

Dr. Azuine described the COHEN program as a unique project aimed at not only increasing environmental consciousness, but also addressing the disparities in health and education that have since being a burden in our communities, especially those that GHEP serves.

The COHEN program is a set of structured and unstructured activities aimed at connecting individuals with outdoor activities that increase their understanding of the natural resources and mitigate prevalent risk factors of poor health outcomes.

“The COHEN program is at the center of GHEP’s commitment to increase the engagement of minority communities in environmental issues, natural resources restoration, and supporting individuals to make the connection between optimum health and improvement and outdoor activities,” added Dr. Azuine.

The GHEP Executive Director said that the organization was excited about the opportunity to implement the COHEN program in local communities not only in Prince George’s County but also in the entire DC metropolitan area.

Dr. Azuine thanked the CBT, the funders of the program, for their insight in prioritizing the engagement of minority communities in its grant making efforts and for supporting a program, such as COHEN that addresses health disparities.
