Trump Portrait Artist Shut Out Of Galleries And Auction Houses Artist who rose to fame after selling portrait of Donald Trump to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not finds it difficult to sell his latest Trump portrait created on shredded US currency.
Artist Drake Barry made headlines in 2014 when Ripley’s Believe It or Not Odditorium purchased his Donald Trump portrait painted on shredded US currency. Part of a series portraying famous millionaires and billionaires it found a home at Ripley’s Times Square location. Later in 2016 the same painting made headlines again when it mysteriously disappeared from public display. With Donald Trump making daily news, Drake Barry felt the time was right for a new portrait of Trump. After once again getting a supply of shredded US currency from the mint, Barry went to work on a new portrait depicting Trump wearing one of his now iconic Make America Great
Again trucker caps. Although the artwork measures a mere 20x24 inches, it manages to capture the oversized spirit of Donald Trump. Once the artwork was completed Barry was faced with an unusual problem; he couldn’t find a gallery or auction house willing to sell the piece. Although some politely declined, many simply refused to respond to his requests. Although not intended as a controversial piece, some have called it inflamatory. One Manhattan dealer who requested anonymity confessed “Usually controversy is welcomed in the art world, but particular subject is a bit too hot to handle”. Many have suggested Barry turn to eBay but he prefers to stick with traditional channels. Now he continues to search for a reputable gallery or auction house to display and sell his work. In the meantime he continues his series of portraits of iconic actors as bulldogs.
