STREET IMPROVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS 5
Introduction As announced in 2020, Mumbai is one of 15 global cities to be selected for the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS). Under this initiative, Bloomberg Philanthropies will support Mumbai for a period of 6 years (2020-2025) on key road safety initiatives, spanning best practice policies, excellence in road safety data systems, speed management, infrastructure designed to protect vulnerable road users, innovation or best practice in road safety enforcement, vehicle safety, etc. WRI Ross Centre for Sustainable Cities is one of the partner organizations in this initiative, focusing on the areas of Safer Streets and Safer Mobility. WRI Ross Centre for Sustainable Cities will support the 15 BIGRS cities, which includes Mumbai, to enhance safety through better road engineering and improved public transit, nonmotorized transport and overall mobility. In January 2020, WRI and representatives from the G/South ward of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) inspected the Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Street and Lala Lajpat Rai Street in Worli area of Mumbai to understand the road safety risks along the road and at the intersections. WRI is responsible for providing the technical inputs to the project. This Report documents the findings and recommendations from inspection of the above mentioned roads. This road safety inspection report was made possible through funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies under the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS).

Project Preamble THE SEA FACE ROADS: KHAN ABDUL GAFFAR KHAN AND LALA LAJPAT RAI ROAD, WORLI After inspecting the above two roads, we understood that, these roads are provided with relatively better vehicular infrastructure but lack pedestrian safety majors like protected refuge areas, pedestrian ramps and universal access to one of the main urban open space of Mumbai; the Sea Face Promenade! Keeping this in mind, the vision was developed focusing at quick fixes which could be implemented in order to make this street accessible for all the users!
KHAN ABDUL GAFFAR KHAN ROAD Length : 2.63 km Carriageway width : 21 m Footpath width : ~ 2.5 - 3 m
Length : 1.84 km Carriageway width : 21 m Footpath width : ~3 - 3.5 m Lala Lajpat Rai road starts at Mela chowk and extends till Haji Ali junction. The adjacent land uses are mostly commercial and institutional with an access to Mahalaxmi Racecourse

SPECIAL AREA: WORLI DAIRY COLONY PRECINCT
Inaccessible footpath force pedestrians to walk on the travel lanes.
Worli Dairy Colony located near Worli Dairy, is a mixed-use high density settlement along Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road. It is also a popular pit stop for truck and taxi drivers to access the public restroom. The community open space here, is undefined and the footpath ends abruptly creating a conflict between pedestrians and vehicles accessing this space.
DETAIL 6: LACK OF ACCESS TO THE FOOTPATH
Proposed Redevelopment Project Parking at intersections makes footpath inaccessible Pedestrian ramp with bollards is absent at crossings
Conflict between pedestrian circulation and parked vehicles near the public restroom on Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan road.
