THE AURORA EXPERIENCE
SOLAR ECLIPSE IN ANTARCTICA
From the start, Aurora Expeditions was destined to be different. Their passion for adventure, exploring wild places and sharing the experience with friends burns just as brightly as it did 25 years ago, as does their preference for small-group, personal expeditions.
A total solar eclipse occurs only every 1-2 years, and to witness it in Antarctica is without doubt a rare occurrence. Perched in a favourable position, hope for clear skies and favourable weather conditions to witness the full solar eclipse. The eclipse we hope you'll see in Antarctica is a total solar eclipse, which is only visible from a small area on Earth. Those who are able to see the total eclipse are in the centre of the moon’s shadow when it hits Earth. A total solar eclipse is in itself is special, but to possibly experience it in Antarctica is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Each expedition is accompanied by an expedition team that Aurora believe are the world’s best. Remote area specialists, their onboard lectures entertain and expand your knowledge. Whether you’re joining them for the first time or returning for another thrilling adventure, Aurora's original goals remain unchanged. Explore wild places that stir the soul, offer personal attention on unforgettable expeditions and welcome new friends into the Aurora family.

Introducing the Greg Mortimer
ACCOMMODATION
The ground-breaking new state-of-the-art vessel and one of the most advanced expedition ships in the world is set to sail in October 2019. Proudly named after Aurora Expedition's adventurous co-founder, this 104-metre ship is Aurora’s very first, purpose-built expedition vessel. Capable of negotiating the strongest winds and waves, the Greg Mortimer is built to world-class polar standards – designed in close consultation with their expedition specialists, taking advantage of Aurora's 25 years of experience. Accommodating 100 landing passengers plus kayakers and divers in the polar regions, with an average of 120 per voyage, the Greg Mortimer redefines expedition cruising for the future. Not only is the ship bigger to contend with adverse weather conditions, its added creature comforts make for a more enjoyable journey out on the open ocean. The Greg Mortimer remains true to Aurora’s ethos and focus on multiple landings, flexible itineraries and offers a wonderful atmosphere.
2019 MARKS THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY AT THE ANTARCTIC TREATY The main purpose of the Antarctic Treaty, which was signed in Washington on December 1, 1959, is to ensure "in the interest of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue for ever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord."
After a long day exploring the wonders of your destination, you need somewhere where you can simply relax and take a break from real life. The Greg Mortimer is the perfect place to take five and recuperate after exploring – with creature comforts and wellbeing considered as part of the overall design. All staterooms have private bathrooms, personal storage options, twin and double-bed configuration options, international power outlets and a daily cabin service, as well as all the basic amenities that you’ll need on board. Of course, the prospect of unexpected wildlife encounters is always on the table so your accommodation needs to have a view as well! Across four of the five stateroom categories, you’ll find large floor to ceiling windows that offer prime observation opportunities around the clock. Additionally, there are private balconies in roughly 80% of the staterooms, allowing you to watch the world float past and take in the salty air of the open ocean. Aurora have introduced three cabin categories to their Balcony Stateroom category. These have been classified into category A, B or C depending on the cabin size and deck location.
Your Antarctica Expedition highlights Immerse yourself in Antarctic adventure alongside the expedition leaders and soak up the knowledge of the passionate naturalists while marvelling at gentoo penguins. Become acquainted with world-famous polar explorers like Sir Ernest Shackleton through the on board historian. Take part in unique Antarctic activities such as sea kayaking×× and snowshoeing with the activity guides. The specialist team of experts share an unparalleled wealth of knowledge and passion between them. Gaze into the iridescent blue heart of an iceberg. Shiver at the sight of a leopard seal rising to meet your eyes. Sit quietly on a beach, invisible to a thousand penguins hurrying to and from the sea. Antarctica is no longer a dream, but a vibrant experience that you’ll treasure forever.
MEET THE PENGUINS
ZODIAC CRUISING WONDERLAND
Enjoy close encounters with charismatic species on the Antarctic Peninsula, including Gentoo, chinstrap and Adélie penguins. South Georgia offers vast King penguin colonies, Rockhopper and Macaroni penguins, while selective penguins live in burrows on the Falkland Islands/Malvinas.
Give ‘up-close and personal’ a new meaning by hopping aboard one of their Zodiacs. Inflatable boats invented by Jacques Cousteau are not just workhorses transporting you safely to shore. Like magic carpets they carry you amid exquisite grounded icebergs, close to feeding whales, near hunting leopard seals and provide the perfect box seat for watching calving glaciers.
Shackleton's Crossing
Kayaking
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY Climate change and carbon emissions continue to be major issues that everyone needs to be aware of and actively managing. Aurora Expeditions treat preserving and protecting the environment with the upmost importance and this is reflected in several features. This includes reduced emissions into the air and sea, lower energy consumption, high fuel efficiency, reduced light pollution for minimal wildlife disruption and lower on-board plastic use. Furthermore, the ship will have a state-of-theart virtual anchoring technology, meaning the ship can float anchorless while launching Zodiacs and kayaks, without disturbing the sea floor.
4
X-BOW™ With the introduction of the patented X-BOWTM, created by Norwegian ship designer ULSTEIN, the Greg Mortimer will be able to navigate harsh polar conditions with ease. As one of the leaders in marine engineering, ULSTEIN’s X-BOW™ is an inverted bow concept that’s been built on over 100 vessels in the shipping industry and allows for more gentle sea crossings, improved comfort and reduced emissions. Aurora are the first expedition cruise operator to utilise this technology for the challenging open ocean waves!
EXCLUSIVE PROMOTION ENDS 8.30PM WEDNESDAY 13TH MARCH 2019.

The memory of your first big iceberg sighting is likely to remain with you for a lifetime. Weather permitting, you may attempt your first landing in Antarctica by late afternoon 28-30 Antarctic Peninsula There are many exciting places you may land, hike, photograph or view spectacular wildlife including: Paradise Harbour A protected bay surrounded by magnificent peaks and spectacular glaciers, the rocky cliffs of this spectacular harbour provide perfect nesting sites for blue-eyed shags, terns and gulls. The serenity of Paradise Harbour is a haven for whales. Keep a lookout for humpbacks, orcas, minkes, and crabeater seals, as you explore the bay in Zodiacs. Half Moon Island See the large chinstrap penguin colony tucked in between basaltic turrets coloured by yellow and orange lichens. Gulls nest on these turrets and there are often fur seals and elephant seals hauled out on the pebble beaches. There is a large rookery of nesting blue-eyed shags at one end of the island, while at the other end of the island lies a small Argentinian station that is sometimes occupied by scientists conducting research on the penguin colony and surrounding waterways. Lemaire Channel If ice conditions allow, standing on the observation deck of the Greg Mortimer quietly as the ship sails along the narrow Lemaire Channel could certainly be one of the highlights of your voyage. The water can sometimes be so still that perfect reflections are mirrored on the surface and it is clear to see why this Channel is often called “Kodak Alley” Port Lockroy Located on Goudier Island, British Port Lockroy was discovered in 1904 and used by the whaling industry in the first half of the 1900s. Today, it is manned by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust and operates as a museum, gift shop and post office for visitors. You can even send a post
card home from the Penguin Post Office, the world’s most southern Post Office! Neko Harbour Located in Andvord Bay, Neko Harbour is an inlet home to gentoo penguins. The scenery is dramatic - towering peaks and calving glaciers surround the harbour. The thundering crack of the glaciers as they calve is sure to stop you in your tracks. DECEMBER 2021 1-2 Antarctic Peninsula 3 Elephant Island, Weddell Sea 4 Solar Eclipse According to NASA, the optimum position to experience the solar eclipse is well into the Weddell Sea. The full eclipse will only be visible in Antarctica, so eagerly await the Solar Eclipse from your prime location 5-6 Cruising Scotia Sea 7-10 South Georgia South Georgia is one of the world’s most amazing natural environments. South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a life-sustaining haven to some of the world’s largest congregations of wildlife. Tussac grass covers much of the island providing an ideal habitat for elephant seals and sea lions. A plethora of birds such as thrushes, finches, tussac birds and Megallenic penguins also inhabit the tussac. Pods of orcas, Peale’s dolphins and leopard seals are regularly seen in the waters around the island. You may even get to see the many penguins species that thrive on the island including Rockhopper, Gentoo, Magellanic, Macaroni and King penguins 15 Ushuaia, Argentina Disembark and transfer to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires.
