As you will already be aware the Community Centre is closed, this includes the RTC, the Op Shop, the Book Station, the Community Bus, Hairdressers, essentially all the activities that require people to gather. This has been done according to the directions of the Australian Government and will remain so until the go ahead to re-open is granted.

Please be advised - While the RTC is closed, Mark and I will still be here working behind the closed doors. We are here to provide Advice, Information and Referral Services - in that, it is business as usual. However, we respectfully ask that all requests be started with a phone call (4770 7855) or email (rollingstonertc@bigpond.com). Please call/email first.

An application form will need to be completed - please bring with you: Your Centrelink Reference Number; photo ID and your own pen.

Arrangements can be made to do the reporting / application online at an allotted time using equipment outside the building.

Our aim is to have limited physical contact, hence the need to call first. If the request can be handled over the phone it will be; which is better for us all. A strict hygiene regime is in place. I personally apologise if these arrangements are inconvenient however like the rest of us, I have vulnerable people in my household I need to keep safe as well as do my job and assist where possible in the Community. I thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Breast Screening Qld have not confirmed either way at this stage, though speaking to the co-ordinator they are expecting notification sooner than later. I have been advised that emails, letters and phone calls will be issued to cancel appointments should cancellation eventuate.

NO CLINIC FOR MARGARET: - VISITING VET 16th APRIL…..

However, Margaret is asking, if her existing clients are needing scripts/medications etc, they preferably text or phone her to order these before 16 April. Margaret will deliver the scripts/medications but will not be holding a clinic.

This visit will be strictly a pick-up service only.

Beyond this month please organise directly with Margaret for medications, as the closure of the Centre will remain in place until advised differently by the Australian Government. Thank you for your understanding.

The Rolly Rag will continue to be compiled and distributed each month. To highlight how good this Community is; we are encouraging people to make mention of those who have gone above and beyond, not only at this time of a crisis but anytime you feel someone needs to be congratulated for their efforts on an individual basis or on a Community level.

Leading on from that - As a Community we are facing some of the most difficult times unprecedented in modern history. This is a time to watch out for your family, friends and neighbours.

The Second Stimulus Package: What it means.

The Federal Government announced a second, far reaching stimulus package to help fight the Coronavirus and its impact on Australia. The aim is to add $189 billion into the economy to reduce the impact of the challenges arising from current Corona Virus pandemic.

A. Corona Virus Supplement: Permanent Employees, the Self Employed, Sole Traders, Contract Workers (who meet the income test), Casuals and Carers (of someone affected by Corona Virus).

You could receive a supplement of $550 a fortnight for the next six months, applying from 27 April 2020. To qualify, you need to be receiving (or be eligible to receive) an eligible income support payment like Youth Allowance, Job Seeker, Parenting Payment, Farm Household Allowance, Special Benefits recipients etc.

Please note: • You should be eligible for the full supplement if you are making less than $1075 a fortnight.

• Asset testing has also been reduced and will be waived for 6 months. Income testing will still apply.

• The payment is not available if you have access to any employer entitlements such as annual or sick leave or income protection insurance.

B. Pensioners: The qualifying criteria will be lowered by a further 0.25%. This will allow more people to have access to an income support payment such as the age pension or obtain further fortnightly funds due to these new criteria.

C. Superannuation (Early Release): From mid-April, individuals in distress can access up to $10,000 of your super in the 2020 year and another $10,000 in 2021. The withdrawals will be tax free and will not affect Centrelink or Veterans’ Affairs payments. To be eligible to access your superannuation you need to meet the following requirements: • You are unemployed; or • You are eligible to receive a jobseeker payment, youth allowance for jobseekers, parenting payment (which includes the single and partnered payments), special benefit or farm household allowance; or • On or after 1 January 2020: • You were made redundant; or • Your working hours were reduced by 20% or more; or • If you are a sole trader—your business was suspended or there was a reduction in your turnover of 20% or more.

• For those eligible to access their superannuation, you can apply directly to the ATO through the myGov website from mid April.

Also a temporary reduction in the minimum drawdown needs by 50% for account-based pensions. This will apply for the 2020 and 2021 tax years. For example, if you are under 65 and are required to draw down 4% of the pension balance at year start, you will now only need to draw down 2%.

D. Second Corona Supplement: $750 One Off Payment: For those who don’t qualify for the Coronavirus supplement, a $750 stimulus payment (from 31 March to 14 April) and, another $750 will be paid automatically from July 13 to certain income support recipients (including Age Pension, Social Security, Veteran and eligible Concession Card Holders). The payment will be exempt from taxation and will not count as income for the purposes for Social Security, Farm Household allowance and Veteran payments.

E. Bankruptcy Safety Net A temporary 6 months increase to the threshold for the minimum amount of debt required for a creditor to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against a debtor will increase from $5,000 to $20,000. In addition, the time a debtor has to respond to a bankruptcy notice will be temporarily increased from 21 days to six months. Where someone declares their intention to enter voluntary bankruptcy, the period of protection from unsecured creditors will be extended from 21 days to six months.

This past month, we said “goodbye” to two lovely people from our Community. Damien Waterhouse, we are thinking fondly of Kristy and Daine and letting them know we really do understand and that we’re here for them. And Karen Carleton, who worked at the Packing Sheds and loved going to Bingo. Also, not doing very well at all but slowly improving are Betty Coleman, Mick Coulson, Bryan Reinke, Alf Morgan, and Wes Nichols. Others who have had medical intervention are Jackie Brown, Dr. Olga, and Gaye Lovell. Let’s hope they’re all feeling lots better. Also up-andat-‘em again is Kerrie Cochrane, which is wonderful news.

Well, the world is turned upside-down and life is chaotic because of it. However, try to remain happy and positive (as much as you can); observe the social-distancing and good personal hygiene practices as set down by our health authorities and you have every chance of coming through this unscathed.

Of course, life at the Community Centre is pretty hectic for our Staff and Volunteers because of the present situation, but by now, you will know that we’re “shutting up shop” for a time. You will, of course, be advised of that date and of our re-opening date when they are known and are definite.

Otherwise presently all is cruising along fairly normally at the Community Centre. We are managing to catch up on some projects we couldn’t get to because of the (very little) wet weather we had and that we’ll continue while we’re able.

Just as a matter of interest, we have a very talented Pottery Lady living in Toomulla. Her work is not classical but of the “quirky” variety, hence her business name: “Quirky Clay” – phone 4770 7527.

It has been suggested by the experts that the BEST Hand Sanitiser is soap and water!! They advise not to use the homemade stuff because it’s not all as simple as it sounds and there could be danger lurking in some of the ingredients used, along with the fact that not all the measurements are as they should be. Personally, soap and water suits me fine and I’ve been using it successfully all my life – as do the medicos who perform surgery on you. They ONLY use soap and water, nothing flash.

Rollingstone & District Community Association Inc Scores $84,000 Disaster Funding for a Complete Upgrade of Pace Park, Rollingstone Community Centre.

The Rollingstone & District Community Association will have vital repairs made to its flood-damaged field at the Community Centre after receiving $84,000 in funding. Works at Pace Park are funded under the joint Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement (DRFA).

The Association President Mrs. Sue Von Wald says, “The work being carried out is to top dress the whole park, leveling the entire area to ensure the safety of all park users. After which a program of aerating, fertilising and weed management will be carried out over time. Pace Park is closed for maintenance until this work is completed.”

“The Safety of all who use the park has always been our driving factor when applying for funding. The water inundation in February last year resulted in Pace Park becoming extremely rough, whilst the depletion of nutrients saw the park present in a very lackluster state,” says Mrs. Von Wald.

“Once this work program has been completed, Pace Park can then be used more generally by all age groups for all manner of outdoor activities and knowing that Pace Park will be in as good condition as any park in the Townsville region.”

The Federal Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management, David Littleproud said, “The funding demonstrates the Commonwealth and Queensland Government’s commitment to supporting all facets of the region’s recovery.”

“These repairs have been jointly funded under the $20 million Community and Recreational Assets program, which was approved as an extraordinary recovery measure under the DRFA,” Minister Littleproud said. “All levels of Government have worked together to get these facilities up and running again to ensure they will serve the community and surrounding region for years to come.”

Queensland Minister for Sport, Mick De Brenni said DRFA was seeing facilities restored at up to 60 not-for-profit sport and recreation organisations across the Townsville, Richmond, McKinlay, Flinders and Cloncurry Council regions.

“This weather event was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced, so it’s great to see positive outcomes like this being delivered for P6 local Communities,” he said.

United front to tackle Corona Virus By now, you would be aware of the very serious measures both State and Federal governments have taken to slow the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

I myself had a scare last month after attending an event with Senator Susan McDonald, who tested positive for the virus. Upon learning of this, I self-isolated and was tested before receiving a negative result. In these difficult times, it is important to follow all medical advice to minimise the risk of spreading the Coronavirus in the Community.

When it comes to supplies; shop locally, only buy what you need and keep being kind and considerate to each other, especially our elderly Australians who are struggling to get supplies among recent episodes of panic buying. There is no doubt the negative financial impacts of this public health situation will also be felt by local businesses, including those in Rollingstone and Townsville’s Northern Beaches.

Measures taken by the State Government include; offering jobs support loans, mentoring sessions, financial workshops, industry support and a payroll tax relief package. Katter’s Australian Party will continue to lobby the State Government for further financial support in this difficult time. It is important we keep the local economy going while at the same time practicing good personal hygiene and social distancing.

BABZ AQUA GROUP As our Season has been brought to a early close by the “Corona Virus”, we wish to extend our Thanks to the Rollingstone Resort for their Diligence in keeping us healthy through the use of the pool and of course, the occasional coffee gathering at the bar area.

It has been a very enjoyable season with the group numbers growing and Babz, Rebecca and Carol keeping everyone moving with SPLASH, FUN and FRIVOLTY. Our Social “End of Season” gathering has also had to be cancelled but we are thinking of a mid Winter Social when Quarantines are lifted and life returns to normal, so keep an eye on your emails.

Be Safe, be Healthy, keep those hands WASHED and above all; keep moving over Winter and we will see you all back for next season.

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G.Day All, Our first BBQ for the year got us off to a great start. It was nice to be together again.

We had top food, thanks to the cooks; they do a great job and thanks to the ladies who prepare such scrumptious deserts. We all enjoy them. YOU ALL DESERVE A MEDAL. We had a game of Trivia and the winning team was Denis, Barbara, Joan, Carol and Cheryl.…GOOD GAME GUYS YOU GAVE EVERYONE A FLOGGING. Bob won the members draw. Good onya mate.

Several of our lovely ladies had birthdays recently, Happy Birthday to you all.

The program for this years activities was handed out and it should be a wonderful year.

Our first outing was to Bushland Beach Hotel for Breakfast on the 15th March. What a wonderful smorgasbord they have. Great food, as much as you can eat. I am sure no one would need lunch. 29 Members attended.

Paluma in the Clouds - Colwyn Campbell

Australia has experienced a tough time over the past twelve months, with drought, devastating fires and then floods ravaging so much of the country. The disasters seemed almost Biblical in their destructive power and some flippantly asked – ‘What next?

Plague? And now, the Corona virus, which is being compared with the plague-like Spanish Flu which swept across the world a century ago has dealt Australia a further blow. In our small communities along the coast and here, in Paluma, we have been relatively protected from these events but it seems inevitable that we cannot escape the impact of Corona. What havoc, the Corona Virus, or Covid 19 as it is now referred to, has created. It is hard to contemplate the social and financial ramifications and the suffering this virus will cause. Who would have thought that a tiny organism, invisible to the naked eye, could bring the whole world to its knees? The panic and hysteria about it is astounding – and alarming, but then so much mis-information has been spread, partly by both media and social media, that who can help but be confused. With more protection measures being announced daily, the situation must be taken very seriously.

Because I am writing this in mid-March, I was thinking about the Ides of March and why this time is considered unlucky. The date was made famous by William Shakespeare in his play about Julius Caesar, whose soothsayer warned him, ‘Beware the Ides of March’.

Caesar was murdered by Brutus on that day, 15th March. The Ides marked the 74th day of the Roman calendar and coincided with 15th March. It was linked to phases of the moon, the full moon falling on 15th of each March, May, July and October and on the 13th for the other months. Several religious observances were held on this date which was also the deadline for settling debts. Since the time of Caesar’s murder, this date has been considered unlucky and several major calamities, (such as Hitler’s invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939), have occurred over the centuries on the Ides of March. Another unpropitious date is a Friday 13 of any month. So, defying superstition, on Friday 13th of March, Paluma had a visit from Bob Katter and Nick Dametto who came for morning tea and discussions with the PDCA executive and other members of the Paluma community. Mr Katter flew in by helicopter and it was quite a sight to see the shiny little aircraft parked on our Village Green. A few days after the visit, Nick Dametto voluntarily isolated himself as he had symptoms of the virus. He was tested and to the relief of everyone, his test came back negative.

The Saint Patrick’s night dinner went ahead as planned, on 14th March with everyone enjoying good food, good company and much laughter. The AGM and a barbecue lunch are to go ahead as planned on Saturday 21st March, with a certain amount of social distancing being observed.

As a practical precaution, Paluma residents are observing this in any case. We can still walk our dogs and keep in social contact without risking infection. For those of us who were looking forward to time in our gardens – no hope: the mosquito plague is showing no sign of abating! At this time, it has not been decided whether to cancel the Easter Markets or to keep the History Display open. We are taking each day is it comes. Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello Members and welcome. The End of Month BBQ on Friday 28 February was reasonably well attended.

Thanks again to Greg Sant and Condo who cooked, Col Pace for the rissoles and the various Ladies who provided the salads and side-dishes. Monthly Club Fishing Competition winners were Senior, Wayne Truscott and Gavin Love. Dan Dale won the Mystery Prize and the Junior Category went to Cameron Love. The Club Members’ Draw was not claimed, the number was 5, Robert and Kirsty Pratt. The draw prize pool now jackpots to $100.00 so be at the next BBQ for a chance to win.

The Closed Club Barra competition went very well with a record number of 17 Members entering the event with a total of $500.00 on offer in the different categories. There were only 4 Barra caught and all by the same person, 11-year-old Shari Truscott who walked away with a very impressive trophy and some loot to boot. Well done and congratulations Shari.

Don’t forget we have the new Club Stubby Coolers for sale at The Landing for $5.00 each and you can order your Club Shirts either on BBQ nights or any other time by contacting Acting President Graham.

We welcome new Members John Buttigieg from Howitson Drive and Bill and On from Mystic Avenue. John is a keen fisherperson who should fit in well in our Club, I don’t know of Bill or On’s fishing prowess but I do know that they are bloody good cooks. Welcome, we hope you have a happy time in your new Club.

The Kids Fishing Classic which will be open to all children from any area and not just Club Members is currently being organized by our own Fishing Events Co-ordinator Dan Dale. Dan will advertise this event once he has all the details in place.

On the sick list this month we have Club Treasurer Garry Luff who is hobbling around on crutches or in a wheel chair after a foot operation. There has also been some excellent news out of Melbourne where Club Member Russell Rowe is successfully recovering from a Marrow Bone Transplant. Meanwhile, the sprightly Richard Pickering recently received some great news about his problem. ONYA Boys!

Also, on the list is Tony and Kerrie Cochrane who are both recuperating after surgery or illness. Get well soon, your community needs you both.

Thirteen people attended the CPR Refresher or full day First Aid Course on 14 March which was organized by your Club. Thank you, Di, for arranging this training again and a special thanks to RADCA for allowing the use of the Community Hall. Just think Cyril, that is another 13 local people who will rush to your assistance should you fall over. Don’t forget, there is a defibrillator at The Fishermans Landing for public use and no pre-training is required to use this item, it is fool proof.

During this last month there was a change in the Club leadership where Di Thompson resigned as President at the conclusion of our monthly Committee meeting. Vice-President Graham Milliken took over as Acting President until the next Club Annual General Meeting, (AGM) later this year. The position of Vice-President remains vacant. Di did volunteer to remain on the committee until the AGM to act as Club Events Co-ordinator on the provision that she does not be required to organize or attend any Club events held at The Fishermans Landing e.g. Club End of Month BBQ Nights. I am probably showing bias here but I believe Di has been one of the best hard -working Presidents this Club has known; bar none. She always strived to get the best outcomes for Club Members and to her the Club always came first in our family day to day life. She regarded all Club Members as her extended family. The reason for her sudden resignation after about 6 years or so is not medical or personal as some have theorised. Di does say however, that she believes she has come out of this with her personal integrity and reputation intact.

Please think long and hard about the make-up of the new Committee post AGM, we need new younger Executive and General Committee Members to carry this Club forward otherwise it will stagnate. We need a forceful, up front, in your face Committee who will not accept any attempts to be stood over, bullied or intimidated by snowflakes. Look around, have a think, who do you know who would fit the bill?

Nominate them, be daring in your nominations but for God’s sake do something!

I will be resigning as Secretary and Club Rolly Rag scribe at the AGM or earlier if at all possible, so now you have at least one position to consider filling……………………….Until next month, Ninger

Hello All, I am pleased to announce I have been appointed as the Officer in Charge of the Rollingstone Police Station. Sadly, that is about the only good news I can bring to this edition.

At the time of putting pen to paper the Australian Government has been required to implement arguably the most stringent social distancing practices in our history. Obviously, there is a need to keep the most vulnerable members of our community safe and at present by keeping your distance and maintaining good hygiene regimes you are doing your part.

There are going to be a lot of hard times coming very quickly, remember we are all in this together. May I suggest you consider the following • Look out for each other. If you have an older person living near you have a chat over the fence to see how they are going.

• People are going to be doing it tough financially. The government has already released information about different packages, I urge you to access funds.

• Don’t resort to a crime to support your life style, it will not be tolerated. Reach out for assistance.

• Social distancing is not social isolation – consider different ways to communicate. I remember having teenagers at home, so I’ve already had to learn that the hard way!

• This is going to cause stress. Get out of the house, go for a walk, go fishing, ride a bike ride or swim at the creek – just remember to keep your distance from others.

• Access reputable sources for information.

With the shortage of toilet paper reported forgive me for not shaking your hand for the foreseeable future.

MARSHMALLOW BUNNIES INGREDIENTS 2 cups Sugar 2 tbsp Gelatine 1 tsp Vanilla Extract 2 cups Coconut 1/4 tsp Salt 1 tsp Green Food Colouring 1 cup Boiling Water

METHOD Dissolve the gelatine in the cup of boiling water. In a mix master or similar - add the sugar to a clean bowl, and pour in the gelatine mixture. Beat on the highest setting for approximately 10 - 15 minutes or until the marshmallow is really thick and white. Add the vanilla and the pinch of salt to the mixture while it is still beating.

Meanwhile use a canola spray to grease your bunny moulds and a lamington tray. Spoon in the mixture, make sure you try and press the marshmallow into all the nooks and crannies. With a smooth knife make the marshmallow flat on top and place the moulds in the fridge for about an hour.

To do the grass, cut the set marshmallow into squares using a hot knife, and toss with a few drops of green food colouring. Line your dish well (leave a space for the Mummy rabbit). Gently remove the marshmallow bunnies from the moulds, cover in plain coconut and place gently on the grass. Using a cotton bud or end of a match, dip in food colouring and colour the ears, eyes and nose. Keep covered until ready to eat.

PINEAPPLE RICE SALAD INGREDIENTS 1 cup (200gr) basmati rice 2 cups shredded wombok 1/4 large fresh pineapple, peeled, cored & thinly sliced 250gr cherry tomatoes, halved 1 spring onion, thinly sliced 1/3 cup coriander leaves, chopped 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, chopped 2 tabs. Lime juice 1 and a half tabs. Fish sauce 1 tab. Brown sugar 1/3 cup Flavour Escapes Thai Sweet Chilli Cashews 1/4 cup flaked coconut or coconut chips, toasted Mint sprigs extra to serve METHOD Cook the rice according to packet directions. Transfer to large bowl and set aside to cool.

Add the wombok, pineapple, spring onion, coriander and mint to the bowl. Whisk the lime juice, fish sauce and sugar in a jug until well combined. Add half the dressing to rice mixture. Gently toss until well combined. Place the rice mixture on a serving platter.

Sprinkle with the cashews and coconut. Serve with extra mint sprigs and remaining dressing.

ROLLINGSTONE AND DISTRICT LEO CLUB

G’day again Rollingstone and what a fun-filled month Leos have had. On Sunday 1st March 13 Leos,1 Dad and our three Leo Advisors Travis, Shirley and John – together with 3 other Lions, participated in Clean Up Australia Day, with a total of 15 bags of rubbish collected in the Rollingstone and Highway Truck Stop areas. This was followed by a Barbecue in Bushy Parker Park and finished off with a refreshing swim in our free flowing Rollingstone Creek.

Then on Friday 13th May, 8 Leos together with Shirley and John driving the Rollingstone Community Bus travelled down to Lions Camp Kanga at Peter Faust Dam near Proserpine for the Queensland State Leos Council and Camp. Over the three days we met Leos from all over Queensland and participated in various group activities and mini-workshops; both indoors, on the oval and at night. They certainly knew where the Rolly Leos were in our distinctive new shirts – thank you Councillor Margie Ryder for your support in getting some funding to assist with these. All up a great weekend in a terrific location and it was fun to make new friends and learn of the activities they do in their own locations to support various Community events. They all liked our stories from the Dunny Derby and the various other activities we have already done and planned for this year.

And now, sadly, because of the Corona Virus we have had to cancel some of our activities, including the planned distribution of Easter Eggs at the Children’s and other Wards of the Townsville Hospital on Easter Thursday. We are still planning to proceed with some of our outdoor activities over the School Holiday break, including the Car Wash on Election Day (at this stage)!

Greetings to All, Many of the fundraising Activities that we were expecting to participate in 2020 have been cancelled in the light of Community concerns and safety. This includes our annual Rollingstone Pineapple Festival which will be cancelled this year and will leave us in a quiet period with uncertainty as to when we will be back into full swing. This does not mean we are closed to our Community needs and during this quiet time. We will be actively building our club to be stronger than ever when this COVID 19 has passed.

Many of our Club Members will have little projects to work on in preparation for the light at the end of the tunnel with equipment maintenance etc. We are concerned that some Members of our Community may have difficulties with the Community bus not running to Townsville on a Thursday and we are looking at ways to offer a service.
