OUR NEW MEDICAL CENTRE UPDATE To the Residents and Visitors of the Rollingstone District and surrounds.

Most of you will be aware that Dr Vladimir Hasa has been working towards opening a permanent clinic in the Rollingstone area for the past 5 years. After agreeing to purchase the land in 2011 the process has been long and arduous, but finally we can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

The street address of the property is 114 Mystic Avenue, Balgal Beach, and so with this in mind, (and a small vote amongst the staff), the name of the new clinic will be the “Balgal Beach Medical Practice.”

We anticipate that the practice will open with one G.P. and a Nurse Practitioner in attendance from Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 4.30pm.

The premises will accommodate a Pharmacy, and rooms for visiting Allied Health providers and a Pathology collection centre.

An official opening date has not been confirmed although we hope to be ready for operation by the middle of June 2016.

Thank you everyone for your patience and support during this long and winding journey.

Rollingstone State Primary School c.1916 “When Armidale evolved from a pastoral holding of the late 1880’s to a thriving community in 1915, it was evident a school was required for the area.

Isabella Fitzpatrick called a meeting of residents with families and from there they lobbied the Government to build a school on the land which she had given to the community for that purpose.

In 1916 the Rollingstone State School opened its doors to the children of the district.

Times have changed since 1916.

The original school building burnt down in 1957.

Temporary premises were used until the new school was completed in 1962.

Since then the Rollingstone School has expanded to meet the demands of a growing local population.”

NOTES FROM THE R.T.C March saw visits from the Project Outback Dental Van and Breast Screen Qld; the girls in the Breast Screen Van reported the total number of screens was up by 30% - what a wonderful result. The Breast Screen Van will be back in our region in 2 years’ time. The Dental Van saw 6 clients and had 1 enquiry. A schedule of visits will be made available to me soon. It is wonderful to see these facilities being utilised to their capacity.

April is a busy month; School Holidays, Bingo, 2 Coastcare outings, Seniors will be heading to Bivouac Junction for a few days; Board Games; the Vet; and we are organising a Family History Workshop with John Johnstone from the Family History Association NQ, who will be explaining how to search your family history especially using the internet. We are planning this event for 26 April at 10am in the RTC, however this date may change – we will keep you posted.

School holiday fun is a day trip on “Rosie” Leisure Accessible’s smooth riding, purpose built boat. Captain Ken and deckies Joy and Tommy will keep the kids entertained by teaching fishing skills and other tall tales.

This activity is open to children from 6 to 13 years. The cost is $10 per child and they need to wear sun-smart clothing, a hat, sunscreen, bring a water bottle, fishing gear if you have any, bait and enough food and drink to keep your children going for a day on the water.

Places are limited and bookings are essential. Please call me 47707855, to book as contact details will need to be collected for this activity.

The second activity is on Tuesday 5 April, at the Community Centre with two “come and try” Martial Arts sessions with Roxy, an instructor from Matt Fiddes Martial Arts who operate out of Bluewater. The first session is for kiddies 3-6 years, starting at 10-11am with the second session for 7-12 year starting at 11am-12pm. This is a free activity, please (you got it - call 47707855 for more details.

Rollingstone Landcare group have completed their first training session and are looking at a working bee to be held on Saturday 9 April at 9am to be followed up by another training session on 23 April also at 9am. Two more working bees are planned for 14 and 28 May both at 9am. This is an activity open to all interested parties. Many hands make light work – if you can spare the time – we will certainly appreciate your time.

Seniors are hosting their Biggest Morning Tea on 13 May. The theme will be advertised in next month’s Rolly Rag. 5 June is being reserved for the Opening ceremonies of the Rollingstone Station Building, the Op shop building, the generator as well as the Honour Board. More details to come.

Easter will just be over by the time you are reading this – wishing you a safe and peaceful Easter, as many chocolate eggs you can cope with and a couple of sleep-in thrown in for good measure.

Well, what a month it’s been locally from a health point of view.........

Our Purveyor of Fine Foods, Ross Jessop, was hospitalised with the diagnosis of that deadly disease, Melioidosis. He has been dangerously ill but is now home with a long recuperation ahead. So good to have him back. John Grady has had a stroke and is also doing it tough with some way yet to go; Arthur Bonnet, Pam Griggs, and Rose Long have all had falls which have resulted in knee surgery in each case; Bob Selby has spent some time in hospital with an ongoing condition; Shirley Muller has had a shoulder recon; and Jim Ollett has also seen some bad days!! Some fun – I don’t think. We wish them all quick recoveries. To those of you about whom we’ve not been advised are not at all feeling on top of things, please get well asap. 

  

There’s not a lot of news to report, although the Centre has been very busy; but with the rain has come a cessation of outdoor activities and work. However, it all still goes on in the big Hall and the RTC and the doors are open almost 7 days a week nowadays. We’ve also spent time at the “coal-face” making decisions which we hope will benefit the Centre and the community, making (hopefully) futuristic decisions, some more decisions not so visionary, submitting varied Funding Applications and generally still taking care of business.

With the local government elections held this past month, we now have a new Division 1 Councillor in Mrs. Margie Ryder.

The mobile Breastscreening Van has been and gone and we believe attendance levels were up 25%. They were fully booked. Congratulations Rollingstone and environs! We’ve actually done something right AND successful.

During April, we have another Coast Care morning down at the front beach. The project is now underway and perhaps in a couple of years (or more), the finished product will be obvious, commendable, attractive, and appreciated by our many visitors as well as locals. More hands make light work, so please consider joining the group doing the rewarding ‘yakka’ and learn much about our environment and nature at the same time. Notices will appear in the RAG the month prior to the date of planned work party.

Gidday Rollingstone,

There were a few things I needed to talk about this time, so

First there’s the Local Phone Book. I want to do the local Phone Book again. OK… not just me. There’s actually heaps of people that have been at me for a while now, to get this off the ground again. So I can’t take too much credit for anything this time around. The plan is to cover Rollingstone, Balgal, Toomulla, Hencamp, Crystal Creek and Paluma out to Hidden Valley. We want to offer the chance to have either: *a PUBLIC listing in the book that the rest of the community can access or *a PRIVATE listing that gets kept at the police station and only used by emergency services in emergency situations or you don’t have to be part of it at all – it’s your choice.

Once we have the book put together and printed, we’ll arrange for every household in those areas to receive a copy of the PUBLIC listing book. If you don’t have a letter box or a PO Box, the books will be available at the Police Station.

Just to be clear - whether you enter into the PUBLIC book, the PRIVATE book or neither – YOU WILL STILL RECEIVE A PHONE BOOK WITH THE PUBLIC LISTINGS. My plan is that NO-ONE MISSES OUT. In case you didn’t sign up at the stall at the local elections the other week, we are going to go ‘door to door’ with a form for your household that will give you the opportunity to provide name, address, landline number, and mobile numbers and email addresses. The alternative is to come into the police station and sign up at our counter. There will be a nominal charge involved in that process however – Tim Tams should cover it nicely.

All of the local clubs, associations and local businesses will have the opportunity to place a quarter page ‘classified’ ad, to advertise who they are and what they do or offer.

And did I mention that it’s FREE – including the ‘classified’ ads? The plan is for this whole venture to be FREE – for everyone. The ‘cut-off’ date for submissions – either personal, business or club/association – will be the 14th of April 2016. It’s only going to be as good as you make it. ************** The Rollingstone State School - you have to love this place. The school population is growing – the staff are dedicated - reading standards are at an all-time high – the kids are awesome - they’re kicking goals in the sporting arena (they won the last major sports carnival in Townsville) – the P&C president is an absolute legend - they’re in the top 10 State Schools in Townsville for NAPLAN results AND (drum roll please) they’re about to turn 100 years old.

“So what does this have to do with policing in the metropolis of Rollingstone?” I hear you ask. Not a thing. I just decided to change the subject long enough to get you all thinking about the upcoming 100 year celebration for the Rollingstone State School. That establishment is more than just a local school – it’s a local icon and a land-mark in this community. It deserves your support and respect – even if you don’t have kids attending there.

If you have even half an inclination to help, give us a call. The big day is on the 20 th of August and there’s PLENTY to do. *************** This is the bit where you get to sit back later and say, “Does Goughy think he’s a counsellor or something now?”

I have a question. Is there a difference between saying ‘sorry’ and just asking to be forgiven? Personally, I think that if you say ‘sorry’, then it isn’t up to you whether you get to be forgiven.

And if you just ask to be forgiven without saying ‘sorry’ first, doesn’t that mean that you just want to be ‘let off’ but you’re not necessarily sorry for what you’ve done?

I mean… there’s ‘sorry’ and then there’s ‘sorry’. I get told ‘sorry’ heaps of times but there have only been a small handful that I’ve believed have been ‘sorry’ for the right reason. A lot of the time, it’s ‘sorry’ I got caught, ‘sorry’ you don’t understand, ‘sorry’ if you were offended, ‘sorry’ but… They aren’t apologies – they aren’t ‘sorry’ I did or said the wrong thing.

I’ve touched on this stuff before… “never say sorry – it’s a sign of weakness” – that’s the biggest load of bollocks I’ve ever heard. A genuine apology – putting your hands up and owning your mistakes – is a sign of strength and courage.

But here’s a tip – don’t apologise thinking that you’ll be forgiven automatically. It doesn’t work like that. Being forgiven isn’t up to you. But looking at someone and saying a sincere and genuine ‘sorry’, can go a long way to clearing your own conscience – whether you ever get forgiven, or not. It’s the same as telling someone that you forgive them – that forgiveness can do as much to help you move on, as the person you offered it to. *************** And that, Ladies and Gents, is the end of todays ‘deep and meaningful’ section of the Coppers Log. I hope the Easter break was good to you and that the Easter Bunny gave your kids a sugar rush that lasts till September. I know the little #@*%* will for mine.

A few quick things to look out for: * Grey Nomads – they’re coming – again. * Traffic Branch coppers – they’re sneaky - they try and blend in with the humans. * Long weekend crowds – happens every time they get more than two days off in a row. * More rain – Bahahahahahahahahahaha – just kidding – but who knows? * Locked doors – just do it – this place is no longer a secret. The rest of the world knows we’re here and your home’s security is YOUR responsibility. * Locked cars – same as your house, easier to steal, easier to dispose of and painful to have to deal with Stay safe………………….Goughy

Hi everyone, I hope you all enjoyed the lovely rain. Gee, the grass grows quick and the mowing doubles, but it is so good to see the colour green everywhere.

Congratulations to the Gallagher Family on winning the lovely Easter Hamper full of chocolate Easter eggs. Enjoy the chocolates Margie & Noel and don’t forget to share them with the grandkids !! …….Thank you to all those who bought tickets in the raffle.

So Easter is done for another year and the Local Elections are over !! I hope everyone enjoyed the break and had a wonderful Easter.

Even though there is a possibility we could have a change of Local Councillors I will save my messages until May newsletter. As I write this the counting of votes from the election is still happening.

All will be confirmed on or around the 30th March.

So we have been very fortunate to have secured the services of a Building Consultant to help with the design and planning for a Community Hall. SD Building & Consulting . Nick & Wendy Salter have offered to work with the committee and prepare all the information / designing required by the Townsville City Council. This will then be submitted to Council and we will then anxiously await for the response from Council. Hopefully the design will be approved and we will get the stamp of approval for the land, to build a Community Hall.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. In an effort to appease and to atone myself to the Editor of this Fine Family Magazine, I shall attempt to curtail my hitherto verbose contribution in this edition.

The recent rain has been a blessing and we should start hearing of the good catches of barra and mud crabs now that the creeks are flowing. No doubt there will be more very informative information on this matter later in Dickie’s Fishing News. On the downside we were compelled to cancel the first Balgal Beach Markets for the year but they will commence again as soon as the weather will permit and the ground has dried out at The Landing.

Our Club Monthly BBQ which was held a week earlier due to Easter went very well with about 50 adults plus children attending in the wet conditions. New Vice-President Graham Milliken presented the Monthly Fishing Competition and prizes to the following members: Senior Dan Dale, Junior Jack Jones and Mystery Bruce Wollard. Congratulations. Once again we extend a big thank you to Col and Gladys Pace for their very kind contributions, to Robert for the cooking and to the Club and Committee members who did the set up, salads etc. Well done.!

We welcome new members Bill Kirkwood and Jackie Sprules and on behalf of all of our members we wish you both a long and happy association in your new club. The destination for the Closed Club Family Weekend Away from 13 to 15 May 2016 is yet to be decided. We have a few locations in mind, Lucinda, Cardwell, Kurramine and Mission Beach. All members will be informed once a decision has been made. These trips away have been popular in the past and are intended for the whole family to get away for a few days and just relax by a pool or go fishing. Please keep the date in mind by putting it on that scrap of paper behind the dunny door.

Don’t forget that raffles are held at The Landing most Friday/Saturday/Sunday afternoons from 5.00 pm subject to the number of people in attendance. We would love to see you all there for a social drink and some merriment.

Until next month, Ninger FISHING REPORT G'day Folks, The last few weeks have been a bit quiet in the fishing world, with a lot of northerly winds up to 20kts at times causing a lack of fish activity along he coast. The south easterly winds are now back after the low pressure system which brought very welcome rains to our creeks and farm lands.

With the new moon approaching this causes higher tides and good run offs from the creeks, good schools of bait fish and prawns should be around and up the creeks. This, of course brings the predators out. Large live prawns should be hanging around the Cattle, Crystal, Olera and Rollingstone creek mouths. These large prawns make excellent bait for Barra, Mangrove Jack and Bream so get your cast or drag nets out and have a go. With enough large prawns you may have enough for a feed.

There have been some reports of a few good crabs starting to appear at the creek mouths after the run offs from the good rains, so until the creeks settle down most of the crabs will be caught at the creek mouths. Some reports of big quantities of 38 cm Nannygai being caught on the inner shoals and reefs also around Acheron Island and Philips reefs. Sorry to say but you cant keep them, they must be 40cm. A few excellent Coral trout and Sweetlip being landed at Havanah, Fly and Esk islands using mullet and squid baits also a number of Spannish mackeral being landed in these areas using floating pilchards. Hopefully we will have a fine Easter with good boating conditions and for those fishing in the creeks, the takings should be better than previous weeks with the fresh water run off easing down to a regular run. The Rollingstone Creek mouth has changed again after the flush out and the sand bar shortened. Word has it that 1.5 meters of tide with your engine on tilt will get you out to sea. Well that's all for now folks don't forget to put in a trip sheet or at least tell someone where you are going. Keep a lookout for floating logs or half submerged ones after the creek run offs.

Around our area we have many varieties of birds. In Nth Qld we have around 400 and the one I see most often is the Curlew.

Over the past three months one bird carer in Townsville has rehabilitated a total of 17 curlew chicks that were abandoned by their parents. It appears that the drought has played a large part in this happening. The Curlew parents breed assuming that things will improve but mother nature dictates otherwise, so the chicks are left to starve. It seems very harsh but nature keeps numbers to a manageable level according to what food and water is available at the time.

There are two types of feeding procedures when looking after orphaned chicks: altricial and precocial. Altricial feeding is because the orphans need parental care and the best way is syringe feeding, they gape and you feed them whatever their required food is.

Others like the curlew need a precocial way of feeding, it is a matter of teaching them to peck and pick up food. This can be a slow way to care for these birds because Curlews can eat up to 500 grams of ox heart a day. Other foods include mealie worms and carers keep worm farms which greatly help also bright lights which attract lots of delicious insects.

Because the variety of birds are so vast our carers have a back yard full of all sorts of odd things, tubs, dog carriers, aviaries, port-a-cots, cages and puppy pens, then as orphans grow they need flight room and cage room.

It surprises people when they find out that most carers use these types of “pens”, we use child gates, playpens anything that works for us. I have seen an echidna in a large plastic storage bin as that’s one thing he can’t dig out of.

So if you ever have need to discard anything like this please give us a call and there is sure to be someone in the group who could use it. I have been lucky because our “op” shop at Balgal Beach has many useful things and I have managed to buy ALL sorts of goodies to use or to cut down to adapt to our orphans needs.

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc Lions being part of something great We don’t need a Hero - We are a League of Hero’s Here we are, it’s April and although we have enjoyed the rain it’s good to prepare for more stable weather, It’s also time for us to be more active in our Community and so we will be playing a part in helping our Local Disaster Group with updating the District Yellow Phone Directory and the RED one held at the Rollingstone Police Station - See Goughy’s fabulous Coppers Log - Please note we will have identification with us when we call at your door to assist in this important project.

April also marks my 9th month as President of our Lions Club and come the first of July we will introduce a new team and I congratulate those members who are advancing. I will be still part of the new Board in a support roll for team ‘Dowie’ and also taking up a District role I am saddened to lose members during my year as President and thank those who served our Lions Club so well but for a variety of reasons have taken a rest period. We are all part of a wonderful community here in Rollingstone & District and our Lions club has been strengthened by these member’s contributions.

We are encouraged by a new advancement of our ability to serve with 7 new members to our Lions club, 4 new members to our Leo’s and 14 Junior Leos with us this school year – Welcome to our group of dedicated people who make a difference to our local District and the World at large through our International connections.

Did you see how eager our younger members were at the Car Wash on Election day with the knowledge that all the funds are directed to our school!

MASON'S LAW INTRODUCED INTO QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT Last Month, the LNP introduced a Bill into the Queensland Parliament to expand the mandatory reporting of harm provisions in the Child Protection Act 1999 to the early childhood sector. This was the result of a long-running and dedicated campaign

by Townsville residents, John and Sue Sandeman, the grandparents of Mason Parker, who was tragically murdered in 2011.

Mandatory reporting laws are an important part of the Queensland child protection system which can assist in the detection of serious cases of child abuse that might otherwise go unnoticed. I am proud of the fact that the LNP has presented this Bill to the Queensland Parliament after a long, but important process, including a review by the Queensland Law Reform Commission.

I have strongly supported the extensive and robust examination of Queensland's mandatory reporting laws as they relate to the early childhood sector for several years, including sponsoring and presenting petitions on behalf of John and Sue Sandeman to the Queensland Parliament, which were supported by thousands of people from across North Queensland.

A COMMENT ON THE GREENS NEW ILLICIT DRUGS POLICY The Greens reached new heights of stupidity last month, when they announced their policy to decriminalise the use of illicit drugs, including the illicit drug known as Ice. The Greens maintained their policy would keep penalties in place for people who produce and sell illicit drugs - just not for those who purchase and use them illegally. What a load of rubbish. This is typical of the bizarre ideology of the Greens.

All their policy will do is create a consequence-free environment for illicit drug users and fuel demand – making it even more lucrative for the scum bags who manufacture and push them. Our local communities have spoken out strongly about their concerns over illicit drug use, especially Ice. We want people to take more responsibility for their actions, not less. What the hell are the Greens thinking (or smoking)?

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G'day All, What beaut rain we have had and so we know that FISHING WILL COME GOOD NOW! Drought on the land means drought in the sea and it is very true, it has been proved many times. So go now its time to ………….go get ‘EM. We had a great BBQ at the Community Hall and played Golf Putting with lots of laughter. Team four won the GOLD, they flogged us all.

CONGRATULATIONS GUYS. The food was really yummy as always and thanks to the cooks and kitchen crew. TOP JOB PEOPLE, thank you from everybody.

It was Peter Cahill’s birthday and his family came out to celebrate with him at our BBQ and also joined in the golf putting and other fun.

Hi all, I can’t believe I’m about to talk about end of season. Where have the 6 months gone?

Break Up Party is at the Golf Club, 6pm Saturday the 16th of April, the same date as has been on the Aqua calendar since beginning of season in October, no change.

I have confirmed with Mathew at the club and it will be “Off the Menu” dinner. So, get ready to “Put your glad rags on and join me hon....” Once again we have had a great season with plenty of new faces and welcomed back lots of old friends and long term participants. Not many days lost because of weather and only had to wear the shower cap once or twice. New improvements and lots of maintenance at the resort have made Tuesday & Friday mornings even more enjoyable.

Rollingstone & District Seniors Well this time has come around very quickly and has caught me totally unaware.

Ok what’s been happening. A happy group went to see Lonnie Lee at Morning Melodies and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Then they headed over to the Dalrymple hotel to partake in a lovely lunch. A great day out.

A small group went ten pin bowling, alas my arthritic fingers don’t let me do that any more, but I believe there were a few ex players in the group but think there would have been more laughter than strikes with this lot. The moral of the story is get out and DO things, get outside your comfort zone.

Bingo was very well attended, great to see that we are attracting more people, it is a fun day with the chance of winning some money. By getting a good turn out we can keep it going and our prizes will get bigger!

Now a date(s) to put on the calendar, April 17,18,19th.

There are plans afoot to take a group to Bivouac Junction camping and cabin park. Ask those who have already been there with the Seniors and they will give a glowing report, you can fish, relax, fish, drink, relax, go for walks, relax, drink, you get my drift.

Paluma In the Clouds This is our first communication for the year so I apologise that some of the ‘news’ is a little old. I was away at the time of the deadline for contributions to the last issue of the Rag. Paluma is at last truly ‘in the clouds’ again. Despite the minor inconveniences of becoming bogged in our own drive-ways, regular loss of power, (though actually it is quite pleasant dining by candle-light and at night, without the background noise of television or refrigerator hum, and listening to the delightful sounds of frogs, crickets and night birds), having damp washing hanging around the house for days and television programmes dropping out because rain has obliterated the signal, we are very, very happy to see the rain.

One aspect of the heavy rain which hasn’t thrilled residents is that the deeply scoured road edges, which were filled and supposedly repaired by Council last year, washed away with the first rains, leaving even deeper gullies at the roadsides and making access to the driveways of several residents, impossible. This is not only inconvenient but dangerous too for pedestrians who, as there is no footpath, of necessity walk on the road: they risk injury should they have to get to the side quickly when a car comes by.

The new playground on the Village Green has been well used, regrettably however, it has already suffered vandalism – NOT at the hands of local children. Speaking of vandalism, we were appalled to discover that a graffiti ‘artist’, in full view of the public, defaced rocks at Little Crystal Creek Bridge.

She also sprayed rocks along the Range Road. It makes one wonder at the mentality of people who want to destroy a place of natural beauty that is enjoyed by so many.

McClelland’s Lookout Park had substantial improvements made last year with repairs to the path from the car park, the painting of the toilet block and clearing of unruly growth around the shelter shed, painting the shed and resurfacing the floor. New barbecues are to be installed soon. The area looks so much more inviting now which is bonus for the many couples who choose this site for their wedding.

A solution has not yet been found for the overflow from the Village Green public toilets but Council engineers are investigating options for a solution specific to Paluma’s conditions.

Linda Venn has retired from the Paluma Environmental Education Centre which she has steered through many years and seen grow into the vital educational facility it now is, capable of accommodating up to 59 students and 13 adults. We wish Linda well in her retirement. Gumburu, the Catholic Environmental School has undergone major refurbishments, with the addition of a dry storage area, staff bathroom, laundry and new kitchen. It is nice to see the village enlivened by the regular visits of so many children who all seem to immensely enjoy their time in the clouds.

The year’s social activities begin on Saturday evening, (19 th March), with a dinner at the Community Hall to celebrate Saint Patrick. We hope the rain will not deter visitors. It is always a merry night, with everyone wearing something green and bringing a plate of food to share, preferably an Irish recipe.

The following weekend, Easter Sunday, 27 th March will see the Paluma Easter Markets. Open from 9 am until 1 pm, there will be a sausage sizzle and many interesting stalls to browse through.

Come up and enjoy a day in the clouds.

Natures Notes - Roy Mackay What a wonderful 88th Birthday I am having. As a naturalist, what could be better than sitting on a veranda eating birthday cake with several friends and sharing it with maybe twenty Rainbow Lorikeets, a pair of Victoria’s Riflebirds, a pair of Spotted Catbirds, a few Macleay’s Honeyeaters, some Lewin’s Honeyeaters and a few White-cheeked Honeyeaters.

It was wonderful.

Despite the very wet, though welcome weather, we are seeing plenty of birds about, a few snakes and many spiders here in Paluma. On a recent visit to a friend in Balgal I noticed that birds are plentiful there too.

While it is easy to kill spiders, care must be taken to see that spiders do not bite you, especially if you decide to capture them alive to release them in your garden or nearby bush.

I feel sure you have noted that there were fewer Fork-tailed Kites over the past summer months and that now, in March, they are coming back in numbers.

On the sad side, there seem to be more wallaby carcases on the Highway than usual. These are likely road-kills at night when it is harder to dodge them.

Way back in 1949, I started the Australian Reptile Club in Sydney.

About that time a separate group started the Australian Herpetological Society. One of the present members, David Millar, is writing a history of these clubs. I’m sure the reptile enthusiasts of Rollingstone/Balgal will be aware of this. I have a draft of the first chapter. I had a wonderful feeling to find that so many of my P 23 friends of that time are still around – and I am 88.

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi everyone, Don’t forget. 2016 is our 100 year celebration. We will be celebrating this milestone on August 20 th.

We have had another great term here at Rollingstone State School. Our students have all been working hard, and deserve a few days off over the Easter break!

Actually, so have the staff, here’s to holidays, guilt-free chocolate and sleep-ins.

Attendance has been a focus at our school for the last few years. This term our schools attendance rate is 93.4%, which is excellent. We continue to remind the students that ‘Every Day Counts’ at Rollingstone. If students miss just one day each week, they will end up losing over two and a half years of their schooling.

Thank you to our parents and caregivers that are ensuring that our students are at school every day.

This week should have been our annual Pink Stumps Day fundraiser, unfortunately the oval is still a little reminiscent of a lake, and it would be unsafe to hold our cricket game. We are postponing the day until week four next term (Tuesday, 3/5/16). We would love to have some community members join us for a game of cricket!

This term, students have been playing Auskick, with Blake. Blake did an amazing job, coming out each Tuesday lunch to teach the students all about AFL. The kids had a great time!

August 20 will be our community celebration for our 100th birthday. We will have rides and entertainment. If you wish to host a stall please contact me at the school on 47707313.

Next term we will hit the ground running, with NAPLAN, ANZAC ceremonies, NAIDOC celebration, school cross country, intraschool sports competition, pink stumps day, Chappy week, Mother’s Day Stall, School Photos…..I need a rest just thinking about it. See you all next term, have a great break.

There was also a Lions raffle on the day of the election, supporting our P&C. The prize was a $100 voucher for Rosco's store the winner will be published by the Lions club. MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB

As predicted with the improvement in weather conditions, the number of bowlers enjoying our Sunday morning barefoot bowls has increased to an average of sixteen over the last few weeks.

It has been great to welcome some new faces already this year but please be assured we always have room for many more , so if you are still contemplating giving this great game a try, come along any Sunday morning at 9.00am and surprise yourself.

As we have just started another year, it is probably appropriate to mention a couple of rules that we all have to abide by.

Dress : Neat attire at all times and certainly no singlets are allowed This is a Resort rule and their dress regulations are posted inside the clubhouse. Children: While the vast majority of us are all grandparents and adore kids,we are unable to cater for children at this stage. It is the parents responsibility to supervise any children who may accompany them and please ensure no going onto the green.

All participants are requested to be present by 9.00am so that teams can be organised and play can commence by 9.30am.

If you do happen to be running a few minutes late, please ring either myself or the Resort. Cost is $7 per game.

The North Queensland mens pennants will be conducted in Ingham over the May long weekend and this year we will be entering a team. To participate, members must be affiliated with Bowls Qld and be financial members of the club. Club uniforms must also be worn for each match. We will be finalising the team over the next few weeks and are looking forward to a fun weekend for players and partners.

Some of our male members are still playing with MacNade Bowling Club in the Saturday Ingham competition and gaining some valuable experience. Once this commitment is finalised, we will be looking at Saturday afternoon bowls for those seeking more competition. Michael will be co-ordinating this activity and gauging the level of interest in the next few weeks.

We will be purchasing our own Barefoot Bowlers club shirts and this is currently taking place. If you haven't already done so , please supply your size to Maureen or myself. Cost will be around $35 - 40 . Steve has volunteered to be available with his tape measure next weekend to assist any members unsure of their size.

MYSTIC SANDS GOLF CLUB

Hello Golfers, Welcome to 2016 and a new year of golf. Not a lot has happened so far due to the rain but it was very welcome.

The dam is full and the fairways are nice and green. Our opening day was a wonderful success and everybody was raring to go. We had a two ball ambrose and there were some good scores registered.

The summer comp was a good success we had a lot of good scores. A big thanks to Steve and Vonnie Wynne for running the season competition well done to the both of you.

I will be putting a few different items in this years golf news so I may as well start with our juniors. The management has decided to encourage those young people who might like to get into golf. There will be no club fees charged, all you will have to pay is $2 for the Saturday morning lesson and play a few holes. Golf clubs are not necessary as the club will supply them on the morning, So all you young people out there, why not give it a go you never know there just might be another Adam Scott or Jason Day out there . All you have to do is enquire at the clubhouse and Matt will be very happy to help you.

R.S.L. NEWS Easter will have been and gone by the time you get to read the April Rolly Rag! Hope you all had a pleasant Easter break and didn’t indulge in too many eggs.

On Sunday the 6th of March we held our AGM. Mick Coulson presented our club with a photo, generously donated to our club by Chris Martin and Brian Knight. We had it mounted and framed and it is now on display at the club. Brian had taken the photo of Suvla Bay when they attended the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli in 2015. Ewan also presented Mick with an Australia Day Award. He received a certificate and medallion for service to the RSL. Mick has been a Queensland RSL service member for 30 years, many of those as a serving committee member, and had previously been a member in NSW. He was proud and honoured to receive this award.

Our new committee / board remains nearly the same as for 2015.

Ewan Cameron was elected as President, Mick Coulson stood down from the Vice President’s position and Rod Girvan replaces Mick until we can call for nominations at our next quarterly meeting. He will become our Welfare Officer when he completes his course. Welcome to Jon, our Navy representative on the committee!

Our oldest member, Keith Norton was in attendance and being one of the few WW11 veterans remaining, is being interviewed by a lady studying history at JCU. She is going to make a digital history of Keith using his memories and photos he took whilst serving overseas. We are looking forward to the final product.

April, our busiest month of the year, is with us and of course that means ANZAC Day on Monday 25th. Hopefully we will again have good support for our Dawn Service and our March.

A reminder re times: the Dawn Service will commence at 5:40 am at the RSL Memorial in Balgal Beach Park. Following the service we will be serving a breakfast in the park and we hope you can stay and enjoy the lovely food prepared by the Lions.

After breakfast you may like to go home or perhaps visit the Mystic Sands Golf Club for a rest or drink prior to the second service.

For those who are marching, we form up about half-way along The Esplanade at 9:30am and then step off at 9:45am.This enables us to arrive at the memorial by 10am for the second service. All community groups are welcome to participate in the March. Following that service everyone is invited to attend the Mystic Sands Golf and Country Club for a more relaxed side to the day. We will be serving snacks and drinks at reduced prices.

Our member, Jim Kennedy, has advised that the Working Military Dogs will be in attendance again this year. They were here a couple of years ago and were a big hit, especially with the younger members of the crowd. The dogs remind us of the important role played by animals during wartime. In the past our military have been supported by horses, donkeys, pigeons and of course dogs. Nowadays, the dogs are very important for detecting unexploded bombs in order to protect our current servicemen and women. Please be aware of their presence if you intend bringing your own dog to the service.

The dogs will be secured and their handlers will be fully in control, but we are just letting you know so that your own animal will not be frightened by their presence.

Unfortunately we have been directed by the receivers of the golf club that we are not to play the Ode at 6pm on a Friday. This

came about because a small number of people complained about the Ode being played. However, following the announcement last week, a number of people complained about not playing the Ode. A much larger number than those who oppose the Ode. Some of the golfers believe it is a golf club and the RSL should not be there. However, when the RSL was formed, one of the original owners and developers, Arthur Johnson, a Rollingstone RSL service member, was quite happy for us to call the establishment “the home of the Rollingstone RSL”. This has been the case since 2000 and has been agreed to by those running the club since then. We asked to do raffles to fundraise and as those on the committee of the golf club did not wish to sell raffle tickets we began on Friday nights in 2000. Hopefully this situation can be solved amicably in the near future.

Speaking of raffles and the Goose Club, we had just gotten over Robyn’s $280 win on the 19th February when Colleen and Nick’s number came up on the 4th March, giving them $220.

Congratulations Colleen and Nick! Hopefully the jackpot can now build up again but if a number comes up in the first 10 draws and then again in the jackpot draw that number is eligible to win the jackpot as long as the person is present. Another number can get the $20 consolation prize if the person is present and that number hadn’t come out previously. The RSL is now solely responsible for the jackpot as prices for goods given out as prizes have increased over time. This compromise came about when Steve and Vonnie were running the club as this seemed to be a simpler way to overcome the increase in costs for them. We thanked Steve and Vonnie for their assistance over the years at our AGM. They are associate members and support us through the purchase of raffle tickets and Goose Club numbers. We hope they are finding life a little less stressful now that they don’t have to be at the club every day. Vonnie has quickly gotten back into being a teacher aide, on a relief basis, and is enjoying working with children again. Steve no longer needs to make regular trips to Dan Murphy’s or the supermarket. He can actually have a day off!

AHHH- the Goose Club went off again. Congratulations to Michelle who won $220! Michelle has been purchasing one number each week, for quite some time, so we appreciate her continued support. My poor brain is now going into overload as I work out how much behind we are with the Goose Club in 2016.

However, we will continue with our $200 jackpot and hope it can build up again over the next couple of months.
