As we are attempting have this Rag out before the end of the month to remind everyone that Saturday will see our catch-up Australia Day starting at 8am. We will report on the goings on in next month’s Rag. School Holidays start with Easter Friday 2 April and resuming on 19 April. In that time Notch (Deeragun Community Centre) are hosting a craft session at the Community Centre on Thursday 8 April starting 10am until 12pm. This is a free activity open to all school aged children. See page 30 for further details. Friday 16 April will see the Lions present their Lego Challenge “Bricks n Blocks” see page 21 for further details. Benita has been holding Weight Circuit classes at the Community Centre for over 5 years now and has chosen to do so over more lucrative sessions in Townsville. However as numbers have been very inconsistent of late, Benita has to find new ways of ensuring she is not loosing out financially. Currently she is entertaining the thought of texting all her regulars to ensure there will be adequate numbers to make the trip north viable for her. Having this class available to us in Rollingstone is something we do not want to loose. Please if you are looking for some fitness activities give Benita’s class a go. The best thing is you can work as hard or as lightly as you wish. Thank you, the numbers at Indoor Bowls on Wednesday mornings at the Community Centre, have built up steadily with 3 mats being used on a regular basis again. Indoor Bowls is a gentle exercise and a lively social gathering. Come along and meet the Bowlers – they are a fantastic bunch of people. The response for registering for assistance prior to a weather event or disaster has begun to trickle in. We are still getting organised to come out and see those who have completed the form. In the mean time please have a think about what is the best scenario for you should an event present its self. This can be recorded in your plan and utilised when needed. Please do not forget to get your form in. We cannot help you without your consent. There is always an army of volunteers lending their muscle to the Community Centre. I do apologise in advance if I miss anyone - this is not intentional, and I am always badly red faced if I do. So here goes, thanks to Alec and Angie, Di and John for taming tigers; to

Yes, you too volunteer your time by reading the efforts of these other dedicated volunteers. Then there is the crew who constructed the pathway between the Hall, Lions’ Den and the back of the hall. You have done a mighty job and “we will have wet feet – No More!” Well done chaps. This pathway is a joint effort between Lions and The Association, to provide comfort for all during the wet season. The Flyer in the Rag this month is all about responsible pet ownership. Owning a pet is a privilege not a right. Now that we have had some really nice sunny days the Solar Street Lights are working to their full capacity. You may not have seen them working but they do their job nicely. These lights were sourced by David Soelberg of MD Tech Services 0447744387 in Bluewater who installed them with grant funds provided by the NQ Monsoon flexible funding Cat C a joint funding venture between the Australian and Queensland Governments administrated by the Department of Communities. It is with the generous support of the Townsville City Council’s Community Grants team that we can continue to provide the community with the Rollingstone Rag. They have again approved our grant application for the purchase of the paper on which the Rag is printed. Thank you, team. Pace Park upgrade is finally completed. The Oval is now of the same standard you will find anywhere in Townsville and ready for your use. Congratulations to all who celebrate a birthday or anniversary this month. Enjoy yourselves. Wishing everyone and safe and happy Easter. Be careful on the roads. Look after yourselves………………you are the only one who can. Cheers………Chris 7

NEWS There is no contribution for Community News this month, due to the indisposition of the writer’s partner.

ROLLINGSTONE SENIORS Our first Committee Meeting was held Friday 17th with everyone present other than Kerrie, our Secretary , who was absent due to a death in the family. At the A.G.M., it was agreed that this year, instead of having the Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council that we instead donate $1000 to them to be spent in Townsville. A Mothers Day Raffle will be held and added to that donation. Tickets will not go on sale until after Easter, at $1 a ticket. Cheryl Pearson was asked if she would like to re-join the Committee, which she agreed to accept. We will be holding the Flower Show again in August this year, so…. 'Get Potting'. That's it for this month, filling in for Kerrie . Wendy - President

The local SES is now accessible through the RTC (at the Community Centre) during work hours on 4770 7855, and after hours and weekends on 0407 753 562. Through an agreement with Townsville SES Headquarters, it has been arranged that we operate as a local Call Centre on their behalf. Otherwise, you can still call 132 500 or 000.

It’s that time of the year, and at the RTC we also have available a good number of booklets and brochures produced and distributed by the Queensland Emergency Services pertaining to the welfare of you and your family with reference to severe weather events. A particular booklet: “GET READY GUIDE” is extremely comprehensive and would be most beneficial for those new to North Queensland.

A consortium of local Groups will be canvassing the local areas in an endeavour to put together a Vulnerable Residents’ Register which will be accessible to the local Emergency Services (Police, SES, Firies) before, during and after a severe weather event in our district. There is a flyer in this “Rag” (March). Please don’t just throw it in the bin if you think it might help you or your neighbours. This flyer has received the blessing of the Emergency Services in Townsville, so no-one is over-stepping the mark; and it might be a further blessing to many households locally.

ROLLINGSTONE RSL ANZAC DAY Sunday 25 April 2021

Rollingstone RSL has been provided with updated information and guidance from Queensland Health regarding ANZAC Day services. As previously mentioned Rollingstone RSL is pleased to announce that ANZAC Day Commemorative Services at the Balgal Beach Cenotaph will take place this year. The Dawn Service will commence at 5.40am and the morning service at 10am. The parade before the 10am service will now go ahead. Those taking part in the parade before the 10am ANZAC Day service are requested to assemble at 9.30. Due to COVID 19 restrictions we are unable to serve breakfast. Members of the general public are no longer required to “sign in” at either service. Volunteers and VIPs in attendance are, however, still required to register their contact details. COVID precautions including social distancing will be observed. Rollingstone Rag, April 2021

If you are feeling unwell, please stay at home.

RSL Queensland is aware that many people will not be able to attend services this year. Based on the tremendous community response to the “Light Up the Dawn” initiative last year, RSL Queensland will encourage Queenslanders to come together in 2021 in their driveways, on their balconies, or in their living rooms at 6am, to commemorate this iconic Australian tradition. If you have any questions regarding ANZAC Day please contact Rollingstone RSL Secretary Suzi Vincent on: secretary@rollingstone.rslqld.net.au or 0409 880 902. 15

Remembering an icon Local agriculture lost one of its pioneers in March with the passing of John Pace. John was a founding member of Rollingstone-based Pace Farming, a small crops farming company run by the Pace family which harvests pineapples, sugarcane, banana, watermelon, pumpkin and cattle. On behalf of the Hinchinbrook electorate, I would like to offer the family and friends of John Pace our deepest condolences during this sad and difficult time. The region has lost a true gentleman and an agricultural trailblazer. Early last month, I had the opportunity to join with local Councillor Margie Ryder and members of the Rollingstone and Balgal Beach community to discuss projects that would help keep local residents fit and healthy. Some hot topics included new park equipment focusing on

youth engagement and walking trails. While you might think these sorts of initiatives are the domain of local government, as your State Member of Parliament, I often find myself working with Cr Ryder to help progress such projects by way of assisting with avenues to apply for State funding. I’m a member of the community as much as anyone else and I applaud initiatives from residents like those in Rollingstone and Balgal Beach who want to plan for the future. I’d like to thank all of those residents who attended on behalf of the Rollingstone and Balgal Beach community during last month’s meeting and I Iook forward to working with you all to see these ideas come to life. Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook.

BABZ AQUA GROUP Another month has passed with less interruption from stormy weather allowing us to gather at the beautiful Rollingstone Beach Front Resort for our Splash Fun Fitness sessions. A special thanks to the past managers, Sue and Mick and a welcome to the new managers working under new ownership. We wish them all well in new endeavours. Our programme of exercises has been evolving under Rebecca’s watchful eye and her diligence with behind the scene homework to grow and expand the exercises to challenge us all, has been greatly appreciated. Thank you Bec for all your hard work! There has been a noted increase in the flexibility of our bodies with some new challenges!

SPLASH. Rollingstone Rag, April 2021

Fun and laughter, community spirit and fitness assistance is thriving in our group. On a sad note, we are all thinking of Cheryl after the sad loss of Don. He will be greatly missed and we look forward to having Cheryl back in the water soon to support also. Joan and Tommy are settled in town with Carol and Trevor becoming their new neighbours also. Missing our fellow splashers but welcome to the new splashers who have been joining us. A few more males to balance the numbers would be great! Wishing all a safe and healthy Easter, we will continue in the water whilst it is still warm, come and join in Tuesday and Friday in the water at 9.30am. All levels of fitness welcome. FISHERMAN'S LANDING FISHING & SOCIAL CLUB Happy Easter Everyone. Dickies Fishing Report: G’day folks, well another month has gone by. I do not know where it went, however Woolies and Coles have had their Easter Bunnies etc in the shops since Christmas. ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LEO CLUB Hello Rollingstone and District. By the time this Newsletter arrives the Rolly Leos will have celebrated their 10th Birthday with a small celebratory Party and Sausage Sizzle at the Lions Den on Friday 26th March. Lions District Governor Audrey Kenny, National Leo Chairperson Toni Lanphier, District Leo Chairperson Sophie Seeden, together with State Member for Hinchinbrook Nick Dametto and our local Councillor Margie Ryder are some of the invited guests who will address the Leo’s on the night and congratulate them on their Service and Commitment to the Community. A full report will be in next month’s Rolly Rag. Earlier this month the Lions, together with the help of our School Junior Leo’s (Grades 4 through 6) served a Healthy Breakfast to the Students and Teachers of Rollingstone State School. This has become a “twice a year” event where the Junior Leos plan their menu, write a letter for the School

Message Board to alert parents of the Breakfast which is also a “Gold Coin Donation” for the School Chaplaincy Fund, and then very enthusiastically serve their fellow students and Teachers a Yummy Brekky. And when the entire School “Roar” their appreciation, we know that through the School Junior Leos Program we are helping and encouraging our future and current School Leaders. And Parents, we hope that when these amazing young people turn 12 they will be encouraged to also join our Senior Leo Club! Leo’s do have some events planned for the Easter Break - if you would like to get involved and join in the fun with our Rolly Leos right here in our beautiful community, then talk to Leo President Morgan, any of the Leos, or contact one of our Leo Advisors:Travis Johnson: Mob 0439 540552 Shirley Muller: Mob 0407 114687

Here we are already in the fourth month of the year and wondering where Summer went. The days now are noticeably shorter; a slight chill is felt in the air late in the afternoon as the cloud mist descends over the village. Sometimes the mist rolls in as early as 2.30 presaging a light shower. This time last year, we were concerned that our rainfall had been meagre but this year we have no cause for complaint. The village lawns are green and gardens looking lush. Every March, Camellias, Tibouchinas and Golden Pendas come into bloom, adding a riot of colour to already colourful gardens. The Golden Pendas, are large trees and look spectacular when massed with large, golden powder-puff flowers. Buzzing of bees working the flowers can be heard at first light, and throughout the day the bees and a variety of birds are constant visitors. Vibrant royal purple flowers densely cover the entire crown of Tibouchinas; so intense is the colour that the trees appear to shimmer luminously in the late afternoon light. Two striking examples are on either side of the road as you enter Paluma. And of course, the reliable Camellias are putting forth blooms in every nuance of colour from white to deep pink. During the Wet Season, a group of enthusiastic gardeners held working bees to construct and plant garden beds in the area surrounding the community hall, picnic tables and play-ground. Many of the plants were donated by Townsville City Council, while others came from local gardens. The plants are flourishing, following regular rainfall and have done much to enhance the area. We have survived the first year of Covid 19. Who would have thought, this time a year ago, that a tiny virus could

bring the world to its knees and cause so much grief and the loss of so many lives. We have been lucky here to date, relatively unscathed and not having to endure the lock-downs and privations of more populous places. With the development of vaccines, the future looks more hopeful. It has been a relief to be able to socialise more freely – many of the Paluma residents meet regularly at the Inn on Saturday mornings for ‘Coffee and Gossip’. Now we will re-open our Tuesday History displays where visitors can study the selection of photographs and enjoy cake and coffee. Entry is free. Many social events are planned for the year. A dinner to celebrate St Patrick’s Day was held on 20th March: a successful event with delicious Irish meals shared, much stout drunk, many Irish jokes told and in general much laughter. Other events planned are the Easter market on 4th April; Petanque on Saturday afternoon, 15th May; Saturday 26th June the Bush Dance with Wattle ‘n Gum. All are welcome. Work has now been completed for now on the restoration of sections of Mount Spec Road, The road was closed from 6pm to 6 am between 11th and 25th March for night works. I have been incapacitated over the last six months by surgery and injury and have been overwhelmed by the support and help given to me by friends and neighbours. They have shopped for me or taken me shopping, driven me to and from medical appointments, done my laundry, weeded and pruned my garden; mowed my lawns, done all sorts of odd repair jobs, cooked delicious meals for me, kept me company when I felt low spirited and numerous other little acts of kindness. I will not mention names as it may cause embarrassment but you know who you are. I am truly blessed to live in such a warm and caring community, Remember to look on our website, www.paluma.org for information about walking tracks, events, etc. Colwyn Campbell

Hello Rolly Rag Readers, During each week, we are confronted with an interesting array of problems, as no doubt you are as well. Recently, we have encountered a couple of animal related matters. Firstly, we have had several recent crocodile sightings in our local area. It is important to be ‘Crocwise’ when around our beautiful creeks and beaches. Never forget, crocodiles are around! If you see a crocodile in the area, please report it to the Department of Environment and Science (DES). This can be done via the QWildlife app for iOS and Android users, on the DES website or by contacting the department on 1300 130 372 (and selecting Option 1). For anyone who is interested, there is also a user-friendly crocodile sightings map on the DES website. Secondly, feral horses are on the move. Townsville City Council have advised that there has been an increase in the number of reports of feral horses grazing on the roadside particularly in the Black River and Bluewater areas. This area of the Bruce Highway has seen several near-misses between cars and horses. If you drive this route, which I’m aware many of us do, please take care - slow down and drive extra carefully. Please report any sightings of feral horses to the Council on 13 48 10.

As we approach the Easter holiday period, I wish to remind everyone to please take it easy and show patience on our roads. With the overseas travel restrictions still in place, we are expecting the roads to be very busy. Remember the fatal five: Speeding, Seatbelt use, Drink/ Drug Driving, Fatigue & Inattention/Distraction. We want everyone to arrive home safely this Easter, so here are a few reminders: • Ensure you and your passengers wear a seatbelt or wear the fine.

Don’t drink and drive, and have your lift legend.

Rest for 15 minutes after driving for two hours and if you can, share the drive to stay alive.

Don’t speed and obey the conditions of the road and the road rules, read signs and consider all drivers.

Don’t be distracted, put your phone on ‘do not disturb while driving’ and leave your phone alone. Be sure to put your own and all other road users’ safety first these holidays, don’t meet us by accident. I wish everyone a happy Easter and hopefully this year we all get to spend some time with our friends and families over the holiday period, especially after last year’s celebrations were interrupted by Covid-19. Stay safe, and don’t forget never smile at a crocodile! Senior Constable Brendan POWNALL Rollingstone Station Policelink 131 444, Emergency 000

Are you bushfire prepared? The bushfire season in Queensland runs from late July to February, and will vary within the state. The Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is an early indicator of potential danger and should act as your first trigger for action.
