Better to be safe than sorry. Notifications will be forwarded as soon as a new date is arranged. The Carboot sale went well. We had 23 sellers and people came and went all morning. Thanks to the Lions for getting the Sausage Sizzle up and going. Thanks also to Dan and Mon for the wonderful coffees and slushies. A big thank you to Michael and Reece for your expertise with the posters, bollards and bunting. Your enthusiasm was infectious and assistance priceless. In conjunction with the Carboot Sale, the Art Exhibition saw a constant stream of visitors on the Saturday. Numbers were a little down at Friday Night’s opening but that did not dampen the spirit of the evening. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Many thanks and congratulations to the members of A@RT for organising the exhibition and presenting over 90 paintings and other media for exhibition. Congratulations to all exhibitors and especially to the Bubbles and Brushes crew. It was lovely to see your work being presented for viewing. Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G’day all, Our last BBQ was great although our member numbers were down due to people being away, others ill with colds etc. however, even with a small group we still always have a good time. We hope you all get well soon. The food was great as always, the fish and snags. The fish was cooked to perfection. Our cooks, Bruce and Bob really showed their expertise. Job well done guys. The good variety of desserts prepared by our ladies were beautiful also, and as usual, very delish. CAN’T HELP MYSELF, and I also noted everyone else had the same problem. The two Lucky Members draws were won by Joy and Shirley. Their prizes were two Lound’s Seafood vouchers. Of course, Col has the best seafood in town.

We also had an Aussie TRIVIA NIGHT to see whose knowledge is best. As always, loads of fun. It was won by team Bob, Teresa and Cheryl. Very smart guys. Our next BBQ is on the 14th August at the hall and will be our AGM as well. It would be great to see everyone there. Come along, join our club and share some new ideas. For information, call Linda on 049*9 343 573. Visitors are always welcome at our BBQs. Cost is $10 per adult, and kids under 12 are free. Members are always free. Yummy food. Well, all the best. Stay well and happy. Best regards from your Committee.

Rollingstone & District Leo Club Hello again from your local Leo Club and a warm welcome to those visiting our part of Paradise! We hope you are enjoying our North Queensland Winter Sunshine. The Leos also had one-on-one time with Lions District Governor Michael Maclaren and Lions Club President Michelle during the course of the Activity, and heard how Leos and Lions are making a difference in their local communities right around the world. Rollingstone Rag, August 2022

And our School Junior Leos will also be supporting the Pineapple Festival with their involvement in the “Pineapple Pirate Pete” Schools Colouring-in Competition, with the winning entries displayed and winners in the various categories announced as part of the Festival Program. PLEASE

Our Local Wildlife Carers Wow, talk about winter weather, we have had the likes of never seen before, bbrr, blooming cold if you ask me. Ok so no-one asked but…..so its true.

I would like to introduce everyone to WRAPT: W Wallabies R Roos A and P Possums T Townsville

that banner. The same goes for possums, they come under the species Marsupials and we do those also. Most of you know Chris and I and we are so thrilled with the support and donations everyone has given us over the years so thought it only the right thing to do, introduce the new group we have joined. We are thrilled to be able to carry on the caring and rescuing we have been doing out here close to home and if anyone would like learn more of what we do we are only a phone call away and delighted to share our passion.

We are a relatively new group which has been born out of the Northern region. We do all of Townsville but felt a need to be based out in the northern area. We have dedicated, qualified carers for all the above animals which we specialize in but we also have carers who will take on birds as we live out this way and immediate care is essential.

We know we need to care and look out for our iconic animals so future generations may have the thrill of seeing them in their natural habitat. The latest report states that we have lost so many species of animals in the last few years, they are extinct which is disgraceful. The bush fires and floods did not help at all. We must all do what we can to keep our animals.

Wallabies and roos come under the species Macropods and we do any animal that comes under

Rollingstone RSL Rollingstone RSL is growing from strength to strength. We have more social gatherings planned for the next few months, including two bus trip outings….so keep an eye on our Facebook Page, Rollingstone RSL for updates. Over the last two months it has been wonderful to meet so many veterans travelling our country through the vans stopping over for a few days at the Golf Club. They have fabulous stories to share and have supported our various raffles to the max! Thanks guys, and safe travels. If you know veterans in our area who are not on social media, please share information with them. Joining in with our local RSL Friday nights at the Golf Club is also an excellent way to hear of ‘what’s

Rollingstone Rag, August 2022

going on’ and to meet up with other veterans. It’s all about supporting each other and the best way to do that is to make contact with other vets or speak to local President Ewan or Padre Bob. Have you ever wondered what is accomplished with funds raised from raffles or accepted donations? RSL Qld has many social programs in place to support the needs of serving and retired veterans, from helping with; reeducation, life outside of the military support groups, heath care initiatives, job search for those leaving the forces, education grants for the children of veterans and housing for those who find themselves homeless. Already in conjunction with RSL Qld, the Rollingstone RSL is providing support with a veteran who needed accommodation due to Townsville’s rental crisis. The photo below gives a good overview of support given during the first quarter of this year and shows the reason why supporting a local RSL in their fund raising is so very important to the wellbeing of many veterans across all of our military services.

Office of Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook Visit: 86-92 Herbert Street, Ingham QLD 4850 P: 07 4765 4700 | F: 07 4765 4709 |E: hinchinbrook@parliament.qld.gov.au

Weekly grocery shopping is leaving our wallets light North Queenslanders are being left with extremely light wallets when doing their weekly grocery shopping.

I often think we are extremely fortunate to have so many talented artistic locals around the Hinchinbrook electorate.

Recently at Woolworths in Ingham, broccoli was selling for an excessive $11.90 per kilogram, which was up from $9.90 the previous day, and don’t even get me started on the humble iceberg lettuce. Many of the price hikes of our staple vegetables have been put down to the heavy rain and low levels of sunshine which has reduced supply and quality. Unfortunately, when we visit grocery stores, we empty our wallets and walk away with just a few bags. With the cost of living rising rapidly, I’m encouraging our community to shop local where possible. In Rollingstone, we are extremely lucky to have local producers of various fruit and vegetables such as pineapples, watermelons, pumpkins, and mangoes. Next time you need to fill up the fridge, I encourage you to take the time to go straight to our farmers. By purchasing directly from our local producers, you are supporting local businesses and jobs.

Congratulations to our local artists and thank you to our local community groups for facilitating a wonderful evening enjoyed by all. I must congratulate Rosa Christian and the Committee Treasurer, Ann Martin, and their team of volunteers for their efforts over the years in creating and continuing to grow this event. I’d also like to thank Chris Martin from RADCA for her contribution to the event, as well as the Rollingstone Lions Club for running the bar on the evening.

Our nation’s farmers in horticulture and agriculture keep food on our table and I would like to thank our local farmers for their tireless work. While I have the opportunity, it was an honour to officially open the Rollingstone Art Exhibition on Friday 15th of May, in the absence of Cr Margie Ryder.

Rollingstone State School Hello Community We commenced this term with a trip to join Bluewater State School to celebrate NAIDOC day with some activities organised by Northern Beaches High School. The Program is organised and run by the high school students and they do an awesome job preparing informative and fun activities. It is now a highlight on our calendar and it is great for the students to mix with other schools. A big thank you to both schools for a wonderful day. This term we have three teams competing in the Townsville Schools Big Blast competition in Townsville on the 7th September. In preparation, each Monday we put our iPads and pencils down, grab our hats and each class participates in coaching sessions with our Townsville coaches for bowling, batting and fielding practice. Each Thursday, students are learning T-Ball, (bring back any memories?) with Mrs Jackson as part of PE and also selected students will also be training for Red Track athletics on the 8th of August in Townsville. Add some lunch time handball competitions and league tag with Chappy Travis and you have a very sporty term.

participating in Archery Tag against our students; should be well worth braving the cold conditions! On our term calendar we have dress up days, a movie night, lego competitions, a Leo’s Breakfast, high school transitions, community days and our beach walk at the end of term. Somewhere amongst all these highlights, we also have to complete all our learning in class!

Ekindy Pods

Two Ekindy Pods are operating at Rollingstone State School on Monday and Tuesday. As a school, we are unable to deliver a kindy program and we only provide a venue. We applied for the grant last year as we had many families not able to attend a kindy or day care centre in town. Both pods are operated by BushKids, and the children attending do a weekly online home session with a teacher from the Early Learning Centre, and one play day a week together. Miss Mandy is the facilitator for Bushkids and she organises a fantastic time each week for those attending.

There are a few spaces available this term, so if your child will be attending Prep next year and isn’t currently enrolled in a day care or kindy, please give Oh, and in case we need any more inspiration to get our office a call on 0747707313 to find out more. outside and be healthy and active, we are very lucky Kindy is an important transition in preparing children to have our Local Luge Olympian, Alex Ferlazzo, visit to be ready to attend school in Prep. Although us at Rolly to share his experiences. Can’t wait! Ekindy is fantastic, if you have the opportunity, I highly recommend attending an authorised Year 4/5/6 are preparing to go on camp in the next kindergarten for 5 days a fortnight. For all those little couple of weeks. We are trying to organise a threeones yet to attend school, head down to the year cycle with our camps to visit the rainforest, the Community Centre on Thursdays to play with Jodie at rural outback and the reef. This year we are heading Playgroup. to Paluma to join the environmental camp centre and to participate in some high flying acrobatic activities Andrew Stallman with Outreach. Toomulla News AED (Defibrillator) available at little library in Herald Street

Thank you to all those who responded positively to last month’s piece on supporting activities in Toomulla Beach. Unfortunately, no ideas for future events were forthcoming from the community so there are none planned in the immediate future. If you have a suggestion, please contact someone on the Toomulla Beach Community Association committee. The draw for the Winter Raffle was conducted together with nibbles, drinks and much frivolity. Thanks again to Rhonda and Rudi for the great work they do. Unfortunately, only one of the winners was present but the others have been contacted and advised of their prizes. Winners were: 1st Prize-Andrew Evans; 2nd Prize-Margie Gallagher; 3rd Prize-Shannon Fleming. Congratulations to all.

Rollingstone Rag, August 2022

Please note that membership of the Toomulla Beach Community Association is now due. Unlike just about everything else in this world at present, the fee remains unchanged at $5 per family. Membership offers several benefits and it is a small way of helping our community, so please contact Margie Gallagher as soon as possible. It would be nice to see every household in Toomulla Beach become a member of the association this year. A further reminder to everyone that the speed limit in and around Toomulla is 50km/hour and along the Esplanade it is 10km/hour. Please stick to these limits to help save the lives of residents and wildlife. By doing 60 or 70km/hour along Herald Street you may save 20 seconds. How important is this compared to saving a life? Most residents comply but there are still a few that seem to feel the speed limit doesn’t apply to them. It does. Many residents use the little library in Herald Street. It is a great community asset. Several new books have been added in the past few weeks including some recipe books that have been donated recently. Take a look when you are next in the area.

AED (Defibrillator) available at Paluma Community Hall for public use June ended with a rush of activity. The annual Bush Dance by Wattle’n Gum on the afternoon of Saturday the 25th was preceded by the also very popular BBQ lunch. Even if you didn’t want to trip the light fantastic, the music itself was most enjoyable and a good laugh was had at the expense of the dancers as they mastered some of the steps. Some of the dancers have been attending this dance at Paluma for over 25 years. The Gold Coin entry donation is money well spent in supporting this unique community band. The next day saw the locals up early setting up for the markets. A good crowd was in attendance with a good variety of stall items available and the stallholders were well pleased with sales. The “ Bakers of Paluma “ held their inaugural baked goods stall with monies going to the PDCA. The range of home cooked fare was impressive and the 3 tables of goodies sold out. The Paluma Bakers are looking forward to doing it all over again at our 2nd October Market.

fell across it and had to be removed. No serious injuries were reported although a few bikes did not make it to the finish. In 2021 there was camping at Hidden Valley at the race finish with a party after to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the ride. It proved so popular that it was repeated again this year with a party on Saturday. This proved very popular again and the food trucks were kept busy. So too was the bar which was organised by the Paluma & District Community Association. The Paluma Rural Fire Brigade organised a barbeque in the Community Centre for the volunteers at lunch time on Sunday for a debrief and this was well availed of. So it is over for another year and Sam Steadman & Aline Herzog are to be congratulated on the organisation and the many volunteers were, as always, indispensable.

The crowds cleaned out the Sausage Sizzle before closing and the visiting public were entertained by some band members who played from the verandah.

By the time you read this Sam & Aline will be married and the community wish them many happy and adventurous years together.

The playground got a great workout by the many children. It was great to see the families enjoying a day out up the mountain.

Les & Lynn Hyland

July has been a dry month, in a rainfall sense that is! Although there was some 94mm in the first five days, there was absolutely nothing thereafter until the 16th. Needless to say the big event of the month was the “Paluma Push” and, unusually, light rain descended just in time for the race start and continued with some heavy spells until the last riders reached Check Point 1 at Paluma Dam. It was quite awkward handling the radio and keeping under the umbrellas as far as possible, not to mention writing down the messages and events taking place all the time. Lynn was assisted in directing the riders by Nick & Glenda as the longer courses had to turn right on a track around the lake while the “Recreational” riders went straight on across the Dam wall. Fortunately, the road to the Dam was in the best condition it has been in a long time although during the race a tree Rollingstone Rag, August 2022
