This festive season don’t drive naughty drive nice Firstly, I would like to start off by saying thank you for your support throughout this year. The community’s resilience has shone through despite the constantly changing COVID-19 health directives. It has been a challenging year for many, however, it is important to note some of our key industries are thriving, our farmers have enjoyed high prices across a range of horticulture commodities, the property market is booming, and locals have been supporting our small businesses through these tough times. I’m sure everyone is counting down the days until Christmas to unwind and relax. I must mention that traditionally, Christmas is the busiest time on the roads with people travelling to visit loved ones and heading to holiday destinations. As you all know there are multiple roadwork zones along the Townsville to Ingham stretch of the Bruce Highway resulting in changing road and traffic conditions. This is a friendly reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility, please be courteous, show tolerance and abide by the road rules. Christmas is a time of joy and happiness for most however there are people less fortunate who struggle during this time. If you are in a position to do so, I encourage you to donate to charities to support those in need, check in on your neighbours or maybe even invite someone over for lunch that may be spending Christmas alone. I hope you all enjoy the Christmas break and have a safe new year. I look forward to catching up with you all at the many community events held during the festive season. NEWS

Well, at time of submission of this column, we hadn’t any knowledge of those presently and locally, feeling unwell. That’s not saying there aren’t any. It’s just that we’ve not been told of those doing it tough. So, to anyone not on top of their game, we wish you all the best and hope your debilitation moves off sooner rather than later.

This past month has been just soooo busy with meetings and meetings and meetings, finishing up projects, and getting out correspondence as we try to accomplish and achieve. The usual activities have been on-going plus quite a number of extra functions/events which is so great to see, especially the continued extra usage of Pace Park. Chrissie is run off her feet what with all that is happening, needs to happen, and stuff that just has to be done. Now don’t forget: the Community Centre closes on Decr. 17th and re-opens on Jan. 4th. However, if you need to Access Centrelink or for anything else URGENT, call the afterhours number posted on the door of the RTC. This is our ‘annual vacation’, so please understand. At a recent Committee Meeting, a member expressed the wish to put a “Blue Tree” in place locally. Discussion revealed a strong feeling that this should very much be a Community Project with input from everyone who was happy to be involved. Therefore, we’re posting on here and elsewhere in this “Rag” to ask if you’d consider coming along to a community meeting to be held at the Community Centre on a date and time in the new year for further discussion of this matter. This is an extremely emotive issue and affects most of us at some time in our lives, either directly or indirectly. We don’t want to do this on our own and ask your serious consideration in attending. Please register your interest/intention with Chrissie on 4770 7855 and we’ll get back to you with a date and a time. So, the old Bus has moved on to start a new life in Bluewater. What a winner that old vehicle was for this community. I hope Bluewater appreciate and enjoy her as much we did here in Rollingstone. We were going to have a Volunteer’s Christmas Celebration but there’s just so many parties happening that we thought it’d be nicer and much more appreciated if we did it when everything had settled down early into the new year and all our Vollies would once again be ready for a feed of ham and prawns. We’ll let you know a date and time early in the new year. We’ve got some new ideas for Australia Day which we’ll be getting out in this “Rag”. Hope they all appeal and we see lots turn up to celebrate what’s great about living where we do. We really are blessed, you know. Due to a number of complications, it now doesn’t look like our Washer/Dryer set-up will be in place by the end of the year, but you never know. We’re as organised and up-to-scratch as we can be but we just have to bide our time what with suppliers, freighting, funder’s requirements, etc. Margaret, our Vet, WILL be here during both December and January. Thank you………. Last Bus Shopping Day will be Thursday, Decr. 23rd. There will be no Bus Service the following week cos it’s Christmas Week and everyone’s having a week off. Next Bus Shopping Trip will be Thursday, Jan. 6th.

Remember if you eat well, exercise, and see a doctor regularly so you live a long and prosperous life, you will eventually die anyway, so stop worrying and start living. There’s a Facebook Cooking Page called “4 Ingredients”. There is a recipe on it called “Sunshine Slice”. It’s made using PINEAPPLE. You should try it – it’s lovely!!

Remember this at Christmas time: A dog or a kitten is NOT a toy. Live well, love much, laugh often and Have a Wonderful Christmas and a really Super New Year with lots of Good Health and Happiness ....................... “Sancho Panza”.

GAYE LOVELL: WALLABIES, KANGAROOS & BIRDS…..4770 7356 / 0412 965 535 CHRIS GREEN: POSSUMS…..0402 084 588

What a wonderful day. I had just started the morning feed ritual when my phone went. At that hour of the morning it is usually only one thing, an animal. It was, a lovely guy in Borton Street had picked up a small joey wallaby that he fortunately saw next to its fatally injured mother. I totally understand these creatures being hit as they have no road sense but I fail to understand why people can’t or simply will not check for young ones. As we know our temperature rises extremely rapidly in summer and if left this young one would have been basically cooked, dehydration would set in and the black ants and birds would of guaranteed a horrendous death. I would wish this on no one as it is torture of the cruellest kind. Please do not be afraid to stop and check, there is a very clear difference in the sexes and only the females need to be checked. This little guy has the slightest graze on the top of his head and weighed in at 627gr so good size and has good chance. Birds are another species that suffer in this extreme heat, they just love to see a bird bath or a sprinkler going. They overheat also and we often get stressed birds in who cannot fly but a bit of RnR and water does wonders. We take water with us so remember the animals. This includes your pets at home, make sure they have plenty of fresh water this time of year. The same goes if you are going away for a few days over the festive season make sure your animals are properly cared for not just left to fend for themselves, she’ll be right attitude just doesn’t cut it any more.

Council offers FREE MICROCHIPPING to registered pets once a month. The event

They are saying that we are in for a good wet ???? Remember the snake population are on the move and when it is wet they need to come closer to get food so domestic birds and such are like drive thru meals for them, very easy to get and normally in a dry spot. Aaaah sheer bliss. I have heard of several snakes being in the wrong place already BUT remember always treat a snake as a deadly guy as too many times you see idiots with a snake on their arm asking for ID and it’s a brown. Ugh, disaster waiting to happen as he has to remove that from his arm and it is not going to be happy to do that. Chrissie and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us this year in donations of linen etc. It is very much appreciated and never goes astray as what we cannot use gets passed on to other groups. Just a bit of useless information, I have a barking owl out the back of my place and I’m wrapt to hear it, if lucky I see it. See small things attract small minds. Please everyone have a very Merry Christmas, over indulge, be cheerful and thanks be for another day. We will see you all in the New Year of 2022 Please note Chrissie (Chris) Green is also a carer for all animals out here..0402 084 588. Please take note of her number.

Hi All. Seventeen years ago I arrived in town and my first question was “Do you have any Water Aerobics here that I can attend?” The answer was no. “Well, is there a pool?” Yes, at the Golf Club. Someone took me along and there were about four girls in the pool puddling around trying to think up a few exercises. I offered to run them through one of my few programs from back then. They loved it and asked me if I would do it regularly for them. That four or five girls gradually grew until I realised I would have to find a program to utilise the whole pool, not just the shallow end. So the “Water Gym” or Float Belt program was introduced. More and more started to join us. We had to take out memberships at the club back then to use the pool but Management at the time decided they couldn’t afford to keep up the chemicals in the pool throughout the wet season (our pool season) so we had to find another venue to continue. There were so many of us that we had outgrown the pool anyway. Cheryl Pearson accompanied me to the Rollingstone Caravan Park where we approached John & Gaynor, who were the Managers at the time. They said they would be quite happy to have us. We have found the Caravan Park to be the perfect spot ever since. The pool is beautiful and big and luckily had plenty of room for our group to grow and it did! In December 2018 we had sixty people on the books for that season and we had also broken a record of thirty one participants in the pool for 1 session. That December, Richard was diagnosed with a terminal Glyoblastoma Brain Tumour and I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up my commitment to the group activity. I had one artificial hip at the time but knew I would soon have to have the other one done as well. Richard was given 3—6 months to live without treatment so he opted to have radiation treatment, after which they gave him a further 12 months. It is not a tumour they can operate on and he has now developed a second tumour. Treatment options are fast running out. However it is 2 years since the Doctors gave him the 12 months and he is still fighting on and defying all odds. When Richard’s illness struck, we soon realised what a truly wonderful Community we live in from all the offers of assistance that came forward, not just for the pool but at home as well. So many offers to assist with the daily drive into town for treatment; casseroles and cakes turned up magically. Dianne Greene and Bec Hutchison came forward to keep the Aquarobics going until I could get back into stride. I now realise that it is going to take longer than I thought, so I am saying Farewell to my beloved Aqua and thank you to all of the wonderful (170 at last count) different people who have participated over the seventeen years. I have loved it and it has been a big part of my life. I am very proud of the achievement and the many people we have tried to keep a bit fitter than they would’ve been without it. Thank you all and I wish the group all the best and hope it continues on for another seventeen years. Babz.

Everyone welcome……..Enquiries: 0417 716 366 Recently, Colin Pace was awarded the National Medal for the Rural Fire Service, for his contributions within the Rollingstone Rural Fire Brigade. Colin was one of the founding members of the Rollingstone Brigade in June of 1962 and by the early 70’s was First Officer. Knap sacks, with an attached spray nozzle, were the only firefighting equipment the brigade had until the mid 80’s, when they received their first appliance. It was a 64 Model Ford truck from the Whitsunday’s, a retired Urban firefighting unit, or commonly known as a Red Truck. Colin can recall quite a few frightening experiences during his active years with the brigade, and I’m sure he’ll be happy to retell the stories if you ask. First Officer was a position he held for many years before handing it over to his nephew Raymond Pace in 2004. Colin is now a Support Member of the brigade and he appreciates the recognition and still does his part within the community when needed during the fire season. Rollingstone Rag, December 2021

Thursday Night Bowls has been a real winner with the competition between locals, campers, caravaners always competitive even though it is social. There were big bowls nights for the Lions, Leos and the Smallbon Cup. Reg, Graeme and GB the winners of the Perpetual Trophy. During the year we ran a few meat tray raffles and with money in the account the committee is going to splash the cash just before Christmas, so turn up Thursday nights and join the festive spirit. A special thank you to Rooster Smallbon and Rod Charleston for assisting with the greens week in week out. Thank you Troy for mowing and bringing the roller out for the green mob. Thanks also to Mick and Lisa for allowing us to keep bowls going at Mystic; to Meg, Hailey and Wade for the sausage sizzle each bowls night; thanks Rhonda for giving us space in the Mystic Sands report. If you haven't played before, contact the club for a free lesson and remember the bowls slogan "If you don't use it you could lose it".Until 2022 enjoy life, a happy Christmas, stay safe and drive carefully. Several of our bowlers will be travelling to other club competitions over the festive period. Best of luck team and bring home the trophies and the cash. Next year the Pineapple Fours will be back with lots of other events planned, so drop in to the club anytime and have a quiet one and find out what's going on!.... 17

ROLLINGSTONE AND DISTRICT LEO CLUB Hello everyone, and hard to believe we are just a few short weeks away from another Christmas Celebration. In the last couple of weeks your Leo Club Members have:Sunday 14 November conducted their “Colour Run and Obstacle Course ” at Pace Park in conjunction with the Lions “Lap The Map for Diabetes” Global Awareness and healthy lifestyle event. Nine Leos, several of the School’s Junior Leos, and many of the young people of our Rollingstone and surrounding communities, as well as several adults and family groups, supported the event. And thank you also to the Community Ladies who also walked around Pace Park, and Lions for supplying the yummy Sausage Sizzle and cold drinks at the end.

We wish all those who live in our part of paradise a very Happy and Holy Christmas, a Merry and Safe New Year, and look forward to seeing our Leos back supporting their Community next Year. Merry Christmas everyone! Shirley Muller Assistant Leo Advisor Mobile 0407 114687: Email jsrellum@yahoo.com.au

Collection Boxes for non-perishable Food Items are at the Community Hall, RTC and Lions Den, and we thank our wonderful Community Citizens for again supporting us this year.

Jan Giles with her prize for winning the Lions Diabetes Lap The Map Raffle.

ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB INC. Congratulations to all who took part in planning and contributing to the Regimental Dinner that was a great success from several aspects. The army personal came from Cairns to Rockhampton and many had never visited our District before, so it was a wonderful opportunity to promote our area. It was a credit to the Soldiers in the way they helped cleaned up on Sunday morning and brought everything back to normal, even some out on an early morning Sunday run after a late night. Many members of our Armed Forces and members of this Regiment died on battle fields to protect our freedom in the past and were young soldiers just like those who visited our District over the weekend as the final stage of a training exercise. It was also an exercise for ourselves, a test of our ability to act during emergency situation be it a major flood, fire etc. Just as the Soldiers were at the end of a training exercise, we too were doing practical training in our resilience to cope and serve under pressure. We would like to extend our thanks to Major Mark Smith the acting Commanding Officer for the Regimental Dinner and all the army person involved in visiting our region. John Holliday Rollingstone and District Lions Club President

BLUE TREE At a recent Committee Meeting, a member expressed the wish to put a “Blue Tree” in place locally. Discussion revealed a strong feeling that this should very much be a Community Project with input from everyone who was happy to be involved. Therefore, we’re printing here to ask if you’d consider coming along to a community meeting to be held at the Community Centre on a date and time in the new year for further discussion of this matter. This is an extremely emotive issue and affects most of us at some time in our lives, either directly or indirectly. We don’t want to do this on our own, and ask your serious consideration in attending. Please register your interest/intention with Chrissie on 4770 7855 and we’ll get back to you with a date and a time. This will also be posted on the local Facebook Pages. Hi Balgal Community, Just wanted to give you a few updates and take this opportunity to thank all the Volunteers who give so generously of their time and wish the Community a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. Community Meeting- HAVE YOUR SAY: • The response to this community engagement in regards to what peoples thoughts are for the Pace Park renewable, Bushy park and the proposed family facility has been amazing, Thank you all so much for taking time to let us (TCC) know what the community is wanting. • Again the background was- 28 Families wrote to me, led by Harmoni asking for a Family Facility, and then in the council budget there was money for renewals. So to my delight Council staff took this on as a project to collaborate, refresh, find out who is actually using the current facilities at Pace Park and Bushy Beach - basically to formally gather as much info and feedback, so we (TCC on behalf of Ratepayers) spend the money wisely for what YOUR current community needs and wants are • The community meeting was well attended and the staff got some valuable information. As promised these will all be collated and presented back to the community in the new year. The Bush Walking Track: • I was so pleased to actually see this take shape and thank Adam from council for sourcing funding for this and the Lions for taking the lead on this. Connecting Balgal: • This project is taking shape, so I will be scheduling a community meeting for late January to keep following through. Drainage Meeting: • Again thank you to those who attended the follow up meeting, and as promised all the clearing of the drains should have happened by now and we will be meeting again in and around March for the documented follow up to see if the work that was done helped. • At the time of writing this I understand some negotiations are currently being held with private land owners to also help. So hopefully by Feb we will have a clearer picture. Looking forward to seeing you in 2022 Warm Regards….Margie

Hi Community Holidays are almost upon us all!!! I think both students and staff are looking forward to a wellearned rest after another busy but successful term. A huge thank you to all our partners throughout the year that continue to support the school in making such a huge difference to the lives and learning of our students. Pink Stumps On the 1st November we held a Pink Stumps day at the Community Centre to raise money for the McGrath Foundation for breast cancer. Traditionally a day where everyone wears pink and plays cricket, we slightly modified the activities to suit our hot climatic conditions. The team looked sensational in pink and we had a round robin of six events that involved cricket skills and water! The highlight was playing in the bubbles on the ‘slip n slide’. Students hurled themselves down the wet, slippery slide and had to peg a ball at the stumps while hurtling down out of control. We also held a couple of special activities that had our Chappy Travis hanging from a wall with duct tape and the students got a little bit of payback with ‘Pop the Principal and PE Princess,’ which turned into a massive water balloon fight. As always, our wonderful P&C cooked us a yummy lunch, much of the proceeds going towards the McGrath Foundation. Thank you to all the community members who came down and donated on the day. We all had an awesome day and raised $541. A special mention to our Year 2 entrepreneur, Emily, who donated her after school time to making beautiful bracelets to sell. She raised $28 for the McGrath Foundation……...Well done Emily! Photo of Chappy Travis hanging by duct tape is on back page.

My Metaphor Family By Monique My brother is a young lion. My mum’s a friendly ninja, sneaking up on us. I’m a dog with messy hair, who has a lot of fun. My dad is a cat, he likes to drink milk. My Aunty, who is a tiny giraffe likes coke instead. We are a busy family when it comes to business. Our home is always happy, But it’s a zoo!

Get someone to throw it to you! A Merry Christmas to everyone and wishing you all a safe and Happy New…….Yours sincerely…...Irene Leary Dickies fishing Report: Giday Folks, well unfortunately the wind has not stopped blowing this month. I think it is called the mango winds, lots of blossom being knocked of the trees so there will be a smaller crop in the coming days. So I guess that is the same reason for lack of boating days, unless you got out around dawn and came back before 10am and only fished on the inner shoals. The creek fishing has been reasonable considering the state of the creek water with a few Grunter being landed along with some good Mangrove jacks. Live bait and small plastics being the go and cast into the snags. Rollingstone and Hencamp Creek are the prime areas for small boats with the odd good muddy being potted also some blue swimmers. The inner shoals as far out as Gun Barrel Reef have once again produced a few School and spotted mackerel to pilchards floated out from the boats also some boated on trawled lines, silver jigs and red and blue lures trawled at around 4 knots at 3 to 4 meters deep other wise it has not been a very productive month. Well here’s hoping for better weather wind wise to come, and also a reasonable wet season to open out the creek mouths. With all creeks needing around 2 plus meters of tide to safely navigate the channels. You can leave your out of date flares and epirbs at the landing for safe disposal and don’t forget to put in a trip sheet with either Townsville or Ingham coast guards or at least tell someone where you are going to fish and what time you will be returning. The creeks nearly all have good size crocs in them so be careful around the banks of creeks. Tight lines and safe boating. Regards…..Dickie

over medium heat for 5 minutes or until glaze boils and sugar is dissolved. Using a small knife, cut ham rind 10cm from shankend. Starting at the opposite end to shank, run your thumb under rind to separate it from the fat. Peel back and remove rind. Bake, basting with remaining glaze every 15 minutes, for 1 hour 15 minutes or until ham is golden and caramelised. Transfer to a platter and rest for 30 minutes. Use clean hands to roll tablespoons of mixture into balls and toss in remaining coconut. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. 30

It’s been another busy month in the little village of Paluma. At the end of October, the Outer Limits crew held their annual ‘Dinner Under The Stars’ on Saturday night, to be followed by the ‘Paluma Trail Run’ on Sunday morning. For a few hours on Sunday, the village was filled with fitness fanatics of all ages as they tackled either the 6 km, 10 km or 20 km trails. Both events were held on the same weekend that significant maintenance works on the electricity network was scheduled by Ergon Energy, resulting in power outages of up to six hours on both days. It was a case of panic stations for a while, but the Paluma SES led by ever-reliable Charlie Allen came to the rescue and fired up the generator to ensure the event took place and was run safely and efficiently. On 6 November we marked Halloween in Paluma-style with the annual ‘Monsters and Mayhem on the Mountain’ Social at the Community Hall. This year it was great to see many kids attending this function and they embraced the theme of the night with their ghastly costumes. There were certainly some creepy people come out of the woodwork (or in the case of Paluma, the mountain mist) on the night. Witches, zombies, Hannibal Lector and the PurplePeople Eater were all in attendance. As usual a great deal of fun and frivolity was had by everyone and with five desserts on the menu, the kids were all on a sugar -high and hyped-up until late into the night. One of Paluma’s long-time residents and champion volunteer of ‘all things that need doing’ celebrated a milestone birthday on 7 November. Wilfred Karnoll is a long-serving member of the PDCA and he undertakes a great deal of maintenance work around the village and at the Community Hall. He works hard to keep our local walking tracks in top shape for visitors and locals to enjoy. There is not much that Wilfred doesn’t know about the rainforest walking tracks and trails in the greater Paluma area and the southern part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Happy Birthday Wilfred! The Paluma Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) has been very active over the past month. Ross Hyne and Sonya Bryce have done a general spruce up and cleaning at the RFB base (at the Community Hall) and they have recently completed an equipment audit. They have held several recent meetings and some training for the volunteer members, especially new recruits. The Paluma RFB is looking for new members and we encourage others to sign up to this important community service. Talk to Ross and Sonya if you would like further information on becoming a member. As we wind down for 2021, the last Social of the year will be held on Saturday 11 December. The annual Tropical BBQ sees most residents in attendance at the Community Hall to catch up with friends and neighbours before the Silly Season sets in. As always the theme of this night is ‘tropical’ and there is always an impressive parade of weird and wonderful tropical shirts and other summery outfits. We hope to see everyone join us for this event in December. Paluma has enjoyed some heavy rain showers over the past week and it looks like the wet season is approaching. The gardens have responded well to the rain and the grass is growing! The plant of the month in the village is Tibouchina Chameleon. There are some superb specimens of this large shrub/small tree along Mount Spec Road. Look out for the stunning shades of purple and pink flowers as you drive through the village. You can’t miss them! See you round the misty mountain ridges……...Michele Bird: 0417 767 099
