I would like to thank all those great people who have helped me out in anyway throughout this year, making goodies to sell at our Seniors Cake Stall at the Balgal Beach Markets. Also a Big Thank you to everyone who has helped me man the Cake Stall – you have all been great. A special thanks goes to Dulcie Hebberd for her tireless efforts making most of our preserves over many years. Dulcie is retiring this year so we wish her all the best. Another Special Thanks to Judy Gammie, who makes quiches and cakes for every market day – even making many handcraft item for us to sell. Judy also donates to every raffle we run. Nevis Foster is also another great contributor of novelty items during the year – Thank you Nevis. Thank you to everyone who has bought and /or sold raffle tickets for our Seniors during the year. A big thank you to those generous people who have donated prizes etc for our raffles. Our Christmas raffle, the last raffle for the year – will be drawn at Seniors Christmas party 28 November and the winners’ names will be posted on all the street notice boards as usual. On a personal note – An update on Clyde’s condition. Clyde is mending very slowly. We will know more towards the end of November beginning of December. Went to a function at Rollingstone at the weekend (8th November) called the Longest Table organised by Rollingstone Lions ……. raffles raising money for the local constabulary to purchase an ATV (quad bike) to assist in cyclone/Emergency management and reckless use on quads. It was a good afternoon with broom throwing, gum boot throwing (boots and brooms landed on top of the community hall roof so the extension ladder was marched out) ham wheels, guess number of lollies in the big bottle and some other hilarious contests that we left to the more able amongst us. Our bbq meal was delicious and was followed by a big choice of desserts. Our group enjoyed the afternoon in the cool of the afternoon. Well done Rollingstone Lions! Toolakea Beach residents.

2 years! Has it really been almost 2 years since starting at the RTC? All I can say is that I have enjoyed every moment and look forward to many, many more enjoyable moments.

Last computer class for 2014 is 5 December at 11am learning about at INTERNET SHOPPING. 2015 classes commence 6 February – no class for January. Cathy will be taking the February class with Chris returning from maternity leave come March. At the RTC we have free USB sticks to be used to scan important documents and proof of ID. This is an incentive from the State Government after TC Yasi and the Brisbane floods where people lost all their important documents and identification founding it difficult to obtain replacement licences etc without adequate Proof of Identity. The copying of documents, sighted as true copies and scanned onto USB can be done at the RTC. The Festive season is a wonderful time to reflect on all those selfless people who have given their time and expertise, helping with all matter of projects throughout the year to keep the Community Centre in tip top shape and running efficiently. My thanks to: The Management Committee for providing a clear vision and direction, The Op Shop Girls – your contribution to the community centre as the human face of the centre, is evident by the amount of repeat customers we get through the Op Shop; Our Bus Drivers – always ready to step in when needed; Our Rolly Rag girls who produce this lovely newsletter for our enjoyment a million thank you’s; our cleaning, maintenance and gardening gurus – visionaries and creators of lovely vistas, after a recent inspection by the TCC for the hall to be utilised as an Evacuation Station said "tell everyone concerned, you have a lovely, well maintained facility here" - all very good news. Seniors Card (State Government) brochures and application forms are available from the RTC. The Townsville City Council has recently posted letters to residents of Balgal/ Mystic Sands/ Toomulla regarding the Storm Tide Evacuation Zones. The Storm Tide Evacuation Guide was referenced in the letter. I am having a number of these guides delivered to the RTC and they will be available for collection. School Holiday program – 4 separate x “Come and Try” free activities have been organised by the Townsville Football Club and Fisherman’s Landing Boating & Fishing Club. o Townsville Football (Soccer) are organising 2 “Come and Try” clinics for Monday 12 January and Monday 19 January starting at 8am (sorry for the early start – but it will be too hot any later) until 10am. The workshops will be held at the Rollingstone Community Centre. Craig Perfect will introduce basic skill building games and run a limited player game. Morning tea will be supplied. Everyone welcome. Please wear comfortable clothing, runners and bring your hats, sunscreen and waterbottle. Call 47707855 for more information. o The Fisherman’s Landing Boating and Fishing Club are hosting a “Come and Try” fishing workshop on Friday 16 January starting at 9.30 until 11.30am. Learn from the locals. This will be held at the Community Centre bring your hats, sunscreen and waterbottle. If you have any fishing gear bring it along otherwise all equipment will be supplied. Morning tea available. Parents are invited to stay. o Then put all those practical fishing skills to practice by participating in the Kid's Fishing Competition at Fisherman's Landing hosted by the Fisherman's Landing Boating & Fishing Club on Friday 23 January from 8.30am to 11.30am. A Sausage Sizzle lunch and presentation to follow. All fishing equipment will be supplied or bring your own. Also bring your hats, sunscreen, waterbottle and personal insect repellent. Parents are invited to stay. This is wonderful news and a very well earned appointment. I have included in this issue a compiled list of events and activities that will be held during December, January and February. I have taken care to include as much information as possible and for the information to be accurate, I suggest you call to the club or organisation listed to confirm the information should you have any concerns. RTC and Community Centre Closure Dates: COB Friday 19 December – 8am Monday 5 January. Remember the RTC is here for Centrelink Services, Internet and computer access, all forms of administration assistance including faxing, scanning, printing, copying and the services of a JP just to mention a small number of our services. From past tragic experience, it is not advisable to swim in the Rollingstone creek in the area under the bridge while the water is not freely flowing. It is not known what micro nasties could be lurking in the stagnant water. This is advice only, your discretion is advised. RaDCA and the Lions have worked together to present quite a number of successful events and functions this year. It has been a pleasure working with you and I look forward to more of the same next year.

Sick report: Bob and Judy Holt; Nevis Foster; Alf Coleman. Sincerely hoping you’re all feeling better, asap. Have asked around but haven’t had any more “sick” reports, so if we’ve missed wishing you well, please excuse, because it wasn’t for want of trying. November has been a quiet month for the Community Association, as will be December except for Christmas Carols and numerous break-up parties. We’re closing the Community Centre from Dec 19th to give all our volunteers a well-earned break, until January 5th. There will be some holiday activity for the kids and presumably activities will resume at the Hall during January once Chris is back. And, of course, January 26th will see the Australia Day event again, held in partnership with the Lions. A beautiful day for an equally beautiful ceremony on Armistice Day (now called Remembrance Day) down on the beachfront at old Balgal. So wonderful to see all the school children in attendance; and so sad to see the lack of numbers from the community. If it weren’t for the kids and the representatives laying wreaths, there’d have only been about 30 people present. Considering the privations those service personnel suffered in their quest to preserve a better world for all Australians with their involvement and sacrifice in the Great War, it’s a rather sad indictment on our society. But for those of us in attendance, it was greatly uplifting and humbling and gave us an opportunity to honour their memories with our eternal gratitude. Rollingstone residents were once eligible for the PTSS but this was removed (without any advice thereof) around 1998/99. Since then I’ve been valiantly trying to have it re-instated without any luck whatsoever! I recently sort legal advice and instead of being morally and emotionally driven, have decided to be somewhat more pragmatic by listening closely while the condition for this entitlement was actually explained to me correctly and at length for the first time in 16 years. Long story short: we’re geographically disadvantaged in that the cut-off point in our area is the Townsville City Council boundary which is Crystal Creek/Mutarnee. This all has nothing to do with being domiciled within a 50klm range from the Townsville Hospital; it has to do with just how far from the Townsville Hospital required “specialist services” are available. End of story. We’ll NOT be getting any consideration re the PTSS (travel or accommodation subsidies) but the Community Association will endeavour to provide a list of budget accommodation facilities, should you need to stay down in Townsville (for medical reasons) for a longer period. Sorry, but that’s how it is – and, believe me, we really did try to make it better for you all; but one wins some and loses some – this one we unfortunately lost. Bus bookings will continue during the Community Centre down-time as will hire of facility and equipment. You will need to call Sue (0407 753 562). Reminding you all that there will be no RAG printed during January and February. Please remember: DON’T give puppies and/or kittens as Christmas gifts, and if you feel you really must, make sure they’re spayed or neutered. Storm Tide Evacuation Maps are available from the RTC. Your personal official documents can be printed at the RTC for a small fee and scanned onto your very own USB stick, which we’ll give you! Just speak with Chris. It’s vitally important you have all this in place before the cyclone season, virtually a “must-do”, for all sorts of convenient reasons. Until we resume operation, Management wishes you all a wonderful Christmas and a bonzer New Year. And, please be kind to each other........... A word of warning………..we have learned the hard lesson through a very tragic event some years ago that it is not advisable to swim in the creek around the bridge area while the water is not flowing. Many nasty micro organisms live in the stagnating water and can be harmful to your health. This is a general warning only - swim at your discretion.

As the Member for Hinchinbrook, the travel that I do and the people that I meet are plenty and varied. In the last few weeks, in addition to travelling to Brisbane (and beyond) in my capacity as the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, I have actively participated in, and attended meetings and events that are important to communities on Townsville's Northern Beaches. Some of these include:  Bluewater State School – Annual School Fete  Rollingstone Lions Club – Longest Table fundraiser  Black River – Community meeting  Northern Beaches Community Consultative Committee – Meeting  Paluma and District Community Association – Meeting of community representatives  Rollingstone – Meeting of community representatives I am passionate about the Hinchinbrook Electorate and its’ communities. I will continue to attend as many events and functions as possible, speak to as many people as I can, and effectively represent Hinchinbrook in the Queensland Parliament. It is both an honour, and a privilege. MASTER TEACHERS FOR NORTHERN BEACHES SCHOOLS The learning experiences of children at two Northern Beaches schools will benefit from highly skilled and experienced teachers from 2015 as part of the Newman Government’s Master Teachers initiative. The $135 million initiative will see 300 Master Teachers deployed to state schools across Queensland, in order to enhance teaching practice and lift student performance. Both Bluewater State School and Bohlevale State School will benefit from the Newman LNP Government’s plan to achieve better student outcomes by improving frontline services. BE CROCWISE As we approach summer and enjoy all manner of recreational activities in and around water, it is important to remember the dangers as we enjoy all that is wonderful about living in our beautiful part of Queensland. This includes being mindful of crocodiles. All sightings of potentially dangerous crocodiles in Queensland should be reported to CrocWatch on 1300 130 372. The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection records and investigates all crocodile reports made by the public, and will take appropriate action based on the potential safety risk posted by the animal. Always remember that no natural waterway in crocodile country is ever 100% risk free, and the public should always remain croc-wise at all times when in and about crocodile habitat. CHRISTMAS WISHES As we approach the festive season, this will be my last column contribution for 2014. This has been a year marked with numerous challenges, but also a year of considerable success. I would like to extend my wishes for a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and happy New Year to all constituents of the Hinchinbrook Electorate. Gidday Rollingstone Last one. It’s Christmas and I couldn’t let the year pass without saying thank you to the people who deserve it. So… Lorraine and George – without you both, my office would resemble a third world country. You do a sensational job. Miss Nina – Always there to help out when I need her – always on the money (literally) – knows her stuff, my stuff and all the stuff we need to have right for the LDMG… and a good mate as well. Tony – large individual, hairy back, knuckles drag on the ground when he walks – one of the most motivated and enthusiastic people to ever put their hand up to help – the bloke, without whom, the Disaster Management Group would still be counting funds in the hundreds, not thousands (yes… knuckles… dragging). Rural Fire Brigade and SES volunteers – Never cease to amaze and impress – always step up when they need to – always persevere in the face of anything that fronts them whether it be physical or political – knowing that these people are there is one of the greatest reassurances of my job. Darren Haggis Haggarty – a good man and a great copper without whom I’d be knee deep in dodo trying to wade through parts of this job (sometimes it sucks being a dinosaur). You should probably give Darren a big thank you – he’s been a voice of reason a few times when I’ve wanted to spray the whole place with Prozac. Puy – Darren’s better half who tolerates me taking up most of his time, cares for a veggie patch growing in not much more than deco granite and cooks the most AMAZING tucker (her version of “little kiddie hot” took the skin off my tongue and made my teeth sweat!) Mitchell – Darren’s boy – trains with me, laughs at my lame jokes and is already booked in to be Poppy’s boyfriend once she turns 18 (or maybe 35). Miss Jenny – what can I say – the best admin that God ever gave breath to – the one person who can lay claim to preventing my career from changing to “Officer In Charge of Paper Clips” in some dingy back office - my office manager, my confidante, my alibi… but more importantly, my friend. Allison – keeps me sane (kinda), pretends to tolerate the 2am phone calls and call outs and reminds me constantly that “people are really just doing the best they can. Don’t get cranky with them unless you know they can do better.” And Poppylillac, my terrorist and my best mate – who reminds me (without ever saying as much) that what I do for a living is nothing compared to what I do as a Dad and who I am when I’m at home. The New Year is going to bring changes with it – changes to how we do business, changes to the Coppers Log, changes in expectations - some that I’m looking forward to and some that I’m not – some that you’ll notice - and some you won’t. Sounds a bit cryptic and probably deserves some more explanation, I know, but that’s not going to happen… at least not from here. From a policing perspective, it stays the same… if you need us, you call. My attitude towards this community… our attitude… is the same as always. Our commitment to our police division, our communities and the individuals who live here, remains as strong as it always has been. Merry Christmas to all of you. Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G.Day Everyone; How good was our November BBQ? Thanks must go to the cooks, preparation people and all who praised the tucker. A case of MKR again. We played team Quoits with team one taking out the gold. WELL DONE TEAM. Lai Pang Baker was our Ladies Champion of the Year and was presented with the Lynn O’Kane PERPETUAL TROPHY. Our girl can certainly hook a fish or two. Fish of the month September went to Merle Dickenson with a 56cm Coral Trout. Mystery Weight went to Ken Dickenson with a 60cm Doggie Mackeral. Fish of the Month October went to Tom Ruddick with a 48.5 cm Grassy Sweet lip. Mystery Weight October went to Merle Dickenson with a 38cm Grassy Sweet lip. Our Lound’s Fresh Seafood Raffle was won by Gwen Cahill. Col and Anne have the best seafood in town. Congratulations to all winners and very well deserved. Some of our club seniors went on a tour of Tasmania recently and all had a wonderful time. It is so good that our members become such good friends and can really enjoy each others company. For those that don't know us, Leisure Accessible provides recreational opportunities for people with a disability and senior citizens. The club operates "ROSIE", a purpose built 7.9m vessel with a flat deck and including an accessible toilet. The side and front ramps provide access for wheelchairs and passengers. ROSIE is a smooth riding, stable boat that travels in a flat attitude, excellent for carriage of people with a disability and seniors on fishing trips and river cruising. We would to thank Dave and Rita Gurr for donating a wheelchair for us to use for passengers convenience in boarding ROSIE. R.S.L. NEWS Remembrance Day. Thank you to all of those who attended the service. I must admit that at about 10:25am I was starting to worry that only a few would attend this service. However, gradually more people arrived and the school bus came with all of the Rollingstone students. Lydia Jamieson from Mutarnee State School brought 2 of her leaders and thus there was a very reasonable crowd for the morning service. Flight SGT David Nutt and 27 SQN from RAAF Base Townsville provided the Catafalque Party. Keeping it in the family way, we had John Muller as MC, and daughter, SGT Rebecca Mackey, who presented a moving speech as Guest Speaker. Shirley Muller also assisted by handing out programs and poppies. Thank you to the Muller Family for your support. Students Mishye and Kaylee from Rollingstone, and Corey from Mutarnee, proudly presented poems as part of the service, and Chappy Jess from Rollingstone SS, admirably performed the Chaplaincy aspects of the service. A wonderful idea from Miss C, the new permanent principal of Rollingstone SS. Congratulations Kacey and I’m sure Rollingstone RSL and Rollingstone State School will continue their strong relationship to ensure students learn of the significance of our ceremonial days. Mutarnee State School, whilst a little further away, always make the effort to participate and we thank them for that. Upon returning to the golf club for refreshments, it was lovely to have a couple of visitors from Mackay say how impressed they were with the service. The setting on the Esplanade and the participation by the RAAF and students impressed them. It is nice to receive positive feedback! Finally, a thank you to Sunbus for allowing use of the bus, and to Robert Jackson for driving the bus so that Rollingstone SS could continue their tradition of attending the Remembrance Day Service. In last month’s article I forgot to mention our QGM, which was held on Sunday, 12th October. We had about 15 members attend and managed to disseminate information as to the future direction of the RSL. Following our meeting, members relaxed and enjoyed a drink and nibblies, ably prepared by Jodine, Vonnie and Emma. We also thank them for their efforts on Remembrance Day. We look forward to our Christmas Party which will be held on November 22nd this year. Alas, this article is due prior to our event, so won’t be able to tell you who danced on the table! A couple of weeks ago the Mystic Sands Bowls Club had a “Come and Try” Day. It was fun, as usual, and as Phil has mentioned in his articles each month, if you want to learn bowls in a fun and relaxed manner, come on over on a Sunday morning and have a go. During, and after the game, a card of numbers was handed around for you to purchase a number or numbers, and the winner received $50. It was interesting to learn from Michael Blake that the money raised was to go to “Soldier On”, a fund to assist those who have been involved in conflict and have returned with physical or emotional traumas. Thank you to QLD Lawn Bowls for this initiative. A thoughtful one as we enter 4 years of remembering the Great War. Our Jackpot has again gone off, with Jodine winning $340 on 31 st of October. She had Emma pick out some extra numbers for her and 64 came up! Congratulations Jodine! We will probably suspend the Goose Club over the Christmas period, but will continue with our raffles. Jodine makes a delicious sauce for reef and beef and her chicken parmas are also very popular, so why not come on over and have dinner, buy a few raffles and give yourself a night off from cooking. Three positives from this- you have supported the club, the RSL and no dishes to do!! A reminder, particularly for Service Members. Dues need to be paid by 28th of February 2015 to remain as a continuous member of RSL Qld. If you are like me, you find it better to pay as you receive a bill, so it doesn’t get lost or you forget about it! AGM in February: possibly Sunday 15th, but to be confirmed. A big thank you to Janine, Kerry and Gaye who put together the Rolly Rag. They do a marvellous job and are always willing to help when I ring and need assistance. Enjoy your couple of months break! Santa Claus is coming to Toomulla! Yes Santa will be here on Saturday 6 th December at 5pm to give all the kids a party. It’s that easy! It’s free! So register the kids and bring them along to see Santa and have lots of fun on Saturday 6 th December down at Toomulla Park. Magnums will be catering for the Christmas dinner. Melanie catered for the Christmas party last year and it was excellent food and service so we have decided to go with Magnums again this year. $20 – Age 13 to Adult. $5 – Kids 5-12. You will need to book for the dinner ASAP. The Christmas Raffle is up and running. $1 per ticket and will be drawn on Saturday 13 th December. st 1 Prize: Christmas Hamper. 2nd Prize: $50 Coles Voucher. 3rd Prize: Wine Pack. Tickets are available from Mick Wellington, Don Cummins, Peter Hall, Margie & Noel Gallagher & Rudi & Rhonda Schwarz. The Garage Sale was a huge success. The weather was terrific, and what a delightful day we all had. We made $820 in sales and $75 from the Raffle. The sausage sizzle was a hit; the boys cooked them to perfection. It was such a relaxing, fun day and I am confident that everyone grabbed a bargain. Thank you to all those people who donated items to sell, to everyone who came along, and thank you to all the wonderful helpers on the day. Very much appreciated. Our Face Book page is getting more likes everyday and is proving to be a great success. It is allowing people to share & express what matters to them & to discover what is happening in the community. If you would like to advertise your business on the Toomulla Beach Community Face Book page please do so. It is a great way for the residents to discover what local businesses are available in their community. The Bunning’s Sausage Sizzle was held on Saturday 29 th November, but as I am writing this newsletter before the event I cannot tell you how much profit we made. I will email and put it on Face Book along with some photos. It is wonderful to hear from some of our residents, who have not been well lately, that they are on the road to recovery. Great news and what a positive outcome for them! We wish you a speedy recovery. Well this will be the last newsletter for 2014, so I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to everyone who has supported the Toomulla Beach Community Association this year, and to all the helpers for every fundraising event for the year. Rollingstone And District Leo Club Our local Leo club, though small in numbers, has had another year of contributing to our local community through a range of projects and activities. During 2014 the Leos have: Participated in Australia Day and ANZAC Day activities  Supported “Clean Up Australia Day” in March  Supported the activities associated with the Official opening of our Lion Club Den  Participated in the Rollingstone Pineapple Festival – how good was our Float – and the “yummy” Hot Dogs that followed  Conducted several car wash and fundraising activities  Supported the Lions “Longest Table Fundraiser” for the Local Disaster Management Groups effort to raise funds for their ATV. “Chook Lotto” was a BIG hit with the crowd...........  Planted and now maintain our own LEO Garden at the Lions Den Also this year we have been very fortunate to have the support of School Principal Kacey Constantine, and through that partnership we now have our “Junior Leos” in Grades 4 to 6. This group, with the assistance of the Lions Club, now have their own “Junior Leos” garden at the school, where a previously open “washout” between 2 buildings has now been repatriated with the Junior Leos planting and maintaining their own garden. A great way to help support the local environment. Talking of the environment, a big “Thank You” to Mrs Gough who also supported the Leos and Junior Leos plus some younger members of the community who did a clean-up of Rollingstone Creek earlier this month. Thank you to Lions Vice President John Holliday who also assisted Leo Jake and provided a “Sausage Sizzle” and cold drinks on completion. And – this group is going to do it all again next month on Sat 13th December @ 7.00am - as their last activity for 2014. Well Done Leos! Leos would also like to thank Lion Ian Thomasson who has been our Leo Advisor right from the start of the Leo Club. Thank you Mr “Thommo” for your guidance, leadership, patience, hard work and humour as you have supported us through all of our endearours – it is very much appreciated. Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc Hello to all those who call the greater Rollingstone area “Home”, and as we prepare for another Festive Season and do our “Cyclone Preparations”, can I please say a “Big Thank You” to all those who supported the Lions “Longest Table Fundraiser” to assist with the purchase of the Local Disaster Management Group’s purchase of their ATV. It was great to see a good turnout of locals and visitors to support this event, and while we will not get our name into the Guineas Book of Records for the longest table, there appeared to be much merriment with our traditional games of “broom throwing” and the “Gumboot throw” (twice on the roof to retrieve the broom & boot), “pumpkin tunnel ball”, “Rock Putt” and of course the recognition of Rollinstone’s Strongest Man - Ryan Alston who just pipped our own Graeme Wegert for the title. Good to see the children also participating and enjoying themselves, as well as our local MP Andrew Cripps who I am told performed very strongly in the Emergency Services Tunnel Ball team. A big thank you also to our Lions Club Members who supplied delicious food and cold beverage to satisfy everyone’s needs, and our local Artists ( Line Dancers, Zumba Ladies and the lovely singer Anita) – all of them adding their own special touch to the success of the evening. As the year draws to an end, our Lions will be: supporting RADCA with our local Carols by Glowstick on Sunday Dec 7 th  supporting The Northern Beaches Combined Church’s Carols at North Shore on Sat Dec 13th  assisting the Leos with their final Rollingstone Creek Cleanup also on the morning of Sat Dec 13 th  Conducting the annual “Santa Lolly Run” and Christmas Cake Sales on Saturday 13th Dec departing from the Community Centre at 2.00PM. Thank you to the Firies and Police who continue to support us with this event – together with SANTA and his Helper! Then we may take a well-earned rest until Australia Day events in 2015. THREE INGREDIENT FRUIT CAKE Ingredients 1 x 750ml Iced Coffee Milk 1kg Mixed Fruit 2 cups S.R. Flour Method Soak mixed fruit in the Iced Coffee for 24 hours. Add SR Flour and mix well. Bake in a lined 8 inch (20cm) square tin. Bake at 150 degrees Celsius for 1 hour. P 21

Rollingstone & District Seniors Dear Readers, Many thanks to Cheryl for writing last month’s article whilst I was away on a Rock ‘n Roll cruise with six other seniors. The cruise was great, the music loud (it certainly got our feet tapping and blew all the cobwebs out of our nooks and crannies), and the weather was perfect – what more could you ask for? We all had a good time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The Elvis Presley impersonator was extremely good and one of our seniors had her photo taken with him so that she could show her grandkids what a really “hip” grandma they have. There was a really good turn up for bingo, even had some grey nomads, who were up here for our winter, join us. A very big thank you to Gaye Lovell and her sister Pam Redfern for providing all the presents for Santa’s sack, so very thoughtful of you, and the prospect of winning the $100.00 final jackpot really kept everyone’s eyes glued to their cards. It’s nearly Christmas time again and like everyone else I am wondering where this year went to. Those of you who still have last minute presents to buy, don’t forget to have a look in our Op Shop. There are some really good bargains there. So good to have our bus back on the road again after its bingle with a kangaroo. Many thanks to Chris for arranging alternative transport for us during the time the bus was being repaired. Also a big thank you to Ben, our driver, who stoically puts up with us “elderly ladies” every week. Finally, welcome back to all our intrepid seniors who made a trip to Tasmania. In the case of a disaster, cyclone or any other catastrophe, the Local Disaster Management Committee has asked that all Senior Residents in the Rollingstone area, provide details of their medications, medical requirements etc to be placed in a sealed envelope and left at the local police station. In the event of a disaster event this information will then be passed on to Bluewater Pharmacy and they will arrange for the medication to be forwarded to Rollingstone should it be required.

Rollingstone State School Celebrating 100 years in September 2016 Wow, we are already at the end of the school year, and what a great year it has been for our staff and students! I thought that I would take the opportunity to reflect on the last twelve months as principal of this great school, although unless you want to read a novel, I will only mention a couple…. We started off the year with a very small cohort of year 7 students (yes, 1 student) after farewelling the year 6 and 7 students at the end of last year. Our 6’s happily headed off to Northern Beaches State High School as our trial ‘Flying Start’ group. I am very proud of the way they embraced high school life and was lucky enough to be a presenter at the NBSHS Awards Night last week and presented high academic awards to our Rolly students (congratulation Caitlyn, Sophie and Mikayla). All of the staff over there always say great things about the students they get from Rollingstone. Our student numbers didn’t drop though, with another big intake of some amazing preps. All staff and students hit the ground running this year to improve our reading results, and achieve some high benchmark levels. We received $22,458 of extra funding for the Great Results Guarantee from the state government, which enabled us to get another full time teachers aide. Our Reading Program began in week 2…. and boy are we all so proud of the results that our students have achieved. (Last year we celebrated that 36% of our prep to 3 students reached benchmark- in 2014 we are aiming to achieve 80%). At the time of writing this, the staff are busily testing the students and I am looking forward to each child coming in to the office to let me know about their fantastic growth over the year. Another proud moment for me this year was our work with the community. This year saw the beginning of the Junior Leos club in partnership with the Rollingstone and District Lions and Leos Club. Seven of our students stepped up to join the club and to be involved in the community. They have developed a Junior Leos garden and cleaned up Bushy Parker Park. Our local RSL moved their Remembrance Service to Balgal Beach this year, so we didn’t think that we would be able to get there for the service… They organised to bus the whole school there! It is great to see such great partnerships happening within our local community. In 2014 we also started our music program, with both classroom music and instrumental lessons. Almost a third of the school has been participating in either guitar or piano lessons! A permanent principal has been appointed at Rollingstone State School, and I am very proud (and a little relieved) to announce to the community that it is me! Kacey Constantine Principal ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------Chappy Chat: Hi all, it was lovely to attend the Remberance Day ceremony recently and have the extreme privilege of leading two prayers for the community. I have been at Rollingstone State School for 2 years now and have enjoyed being their School Chaplain as I visit each Monday and Thursday to be involved with the lives of students, staff and families. Things that stand out as incredible moments include: getting to know new students, being part of parades each week and seeing their great achievements, running activities at Under 8's Day, NAIDOC celebrations and the year 4-7 Camp at Daradgee. It has been wonderful attending the P&C meetings as parents and community members work together to enable many great things to be part of the school year and have organised 2 discos (a 'Super' theme and 'Back to the 80's') for the kids to have fun dressing up, dancing and raising money for the Starlight Foundation and the school. I loved seeing students cheer and participate in Red Track events, playing my ukulele for the Pinapple festival school float, making many pancakes for Chappy Week breakfast and now organising a few items for the carols evening. It has also been great to see Jake Thomson continue to volunteer when he can as he supports the students in the classroom and is another supportive role model. P & C Association News The Rollingstone School P&C Committee has been active this year. Here is a quick summary of what we have been able to provide for the school from our fundraising efforts: NAPLAN breakfasts $ 107 Craft items for under 8s week $ 219 Hire of bus for senior school camp $1200 Fuel for bus for camp $ 105 Craft items for NAIDOC week $ 200 The P&C was also successful in obtaining a grant to construct shade sails above the all-purpose court. The shade sails will be in place for the commencement of the new school year in 2015. The P&C contributed a further $6,000 towards the shortfall between the grant and the final cost of the shade sails. On behalf of the P&C, I offer sincere congratulations to Ms Kacey Constantine on her official appointment as Principal at Rollingstone State School. The school has flourished under Kacey’s enthusiastic and skilled guiding hand. We look forward to working with Kacey next year. We would love to see new members for the P&C in 2015. MYSTIC SANDS GOLF CLUB Hello Golfers, Well this year has almost come to an end. We have had some very good golf, and some new members to fill the ranks of our little club. Over the last couple of weeks the weather has become very hot and dry, making the course very dry and the water situation very critical. Brett has done a terrific job to present the course in a fine way for the two last major events of our calendar. These were the last Monthly Medal and the Medal of Medallist. MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB The last month has seen a lot of activity around our little club with both the `Come and Try Day' and our annual Pineapple Fours taking place. On the `Come and Try Day ' we attracted 29 people which gave a number of people their first opportunity to try our great game and hopefully to continue to participate in our social Sunday mornings and then beyond. The Pineapple Fours was a huge success with a full complement of 14 teams (56 players) participating. The winning team, along with the runners up, were both skipped by Townsville district skippers which was great to see players of this calibre gracing our green. A special thanks goes out to all our members for their help in carrying out all the varied duties that goes hand in hand with organising a event like this and an even bigger thanks to our fantastic sponsor `Pace Pineapples' who have always been there to support us. Thankyou so much. Our final game for this year will be on Sunday 14th December which will hopefully see a good turn up of people who have enjoyed barefoot bowls during the year. Following the morning game, we will enjoy a light luncheon 12 noon before presenting one deserved member with the trophy for `Barefoot Bowler of the Year ' . So, if you have participated in this very successful initiative during the year, please come along and join in the fun for our final game for 2014. We would expect to resume bowls on the first weekend in February, but of course this will be dictated by the rain gods. If in doubt – give me a shout. THE VOICE of “THE VON” What a great day was had by those who were at the Club for the Melbourne Cup lunch at the start of the month. Weather was fine, drinks were cold, food fantastic and the ladies….dressed to kill! A menu of a variety of tapas with prawns, stuffed chicken legs, ham, sliders with lamb and beef followed with cheesecake and tiramisu (to die for) were served and enjoyed over the two hour period. Our staff did a fantastic job, considering this was something new and the day was a great success. The menu for Golf Presentation night on the 28th November is similar to that of the Melbourne Cup Day. If you haven’t advised that you will be attending on the night and wish to do so...please include your name on the list on the club noticeboard. This year will be the first time that junior golfers and parents are invited for a combined night with senior golfers. I would like to congratulate all recipients of Trophies on Presentation night. The AGM for the Management committee and the Golf committee will be held on the Sunday morning after the presentation night. It is pleasing to see a few of newer members to the Club nominating for positions. We must pass thanks on to Bill Kirkwood as he steps down from Golf President and has opted not to stand for re-election. Thank you for your efforts throughout the year Bill. I know well the efforts put in to the commitment and to running your own business as well. Cook Jodine has been putting out some culinary delights on Tuesday and Friday nights with some new dishes and of course many of the old favourites. Hi, a few of you may remember seeing Townsvilles local wildlife warrior when she was up here for the Pineapple festival. Deborah Carter rescues injured birds as part of her not-for-profit organization Fight 4 Flight NQ Birds of Prey, well she has come up with a quirky way to raise funds. Like all wildlife carers she has to support herself and with feed bills for the birds exceeding $200 weekly depending on what bird types she has in she had to find a way to boost funds. She has embarked on a plan where her and her flock attend themed parties and school based sessions. She caters to littlies and the elderly, giving talks on the birds and what they eat and where they come from and if they are an endangered species. Her barking owl, Bruiser, is a great hit. Where else would you have the opportunity to educate with the real thing. We are indeed a lucky country and while we have these dedicated carers we always will be. Thank you Debbie. Debbie can be found on Facebook page Fight 4 Flight N Q Birds of Prey The start of the silly season is upon us. I am perturbed by the number of wallabies/kangaroos killed by motor vehicles in the 50 - 60 kph zones in the past 6 weeks. I personally have had to go to 8 incidents which have all had a bad outcome. Now what I have found is that the injuries sustained have been more along the lines of speed related. Most of the injuries have been horrific causing great pain. I understand that there are times when one cannot avoid an animal but my main concern is the speeding factor. There has been a big increase in speedsters in our area in the past months. I have been overtaken on the 80 km zone and been left like I have slowed up. There is really no where to get to in our small community to make these speeds necessary nor understandable. There are some drivers who seem to have no concept of speed limits when it is dark, perhaps they think everything and everyone is tucked up in bed. Well wrong, there are native animals out and about, that is their natural time and unfortunately they do not come off very well with a machine doing 100+. We have become a society of racers, we have to rush from A to B, we need to slow down and enjoy living and life in our bit of paradise.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome to the final news bulletin from the club for 2014. How the year has buzzed by and now we are all organized for Christmas, or are we? Well, the big news is that Cyril is back from his short fling with that 70 year oldish backpacker. He left a few months ago, strong, fit, and healthy with a spring in his step and a huge grin on his dial. You should see him now, what a train wreck. Like a wounded lion he will lie low now to lick his wounds and recover but, has he learnt his lesson? No way. Apart from lost tongs (again), no one who had a spark to light the BBQ then running out of gas during the cooking, our monthly club BBQ held on 31 October went without a hitch. Thanks to the Ladies at The Landing for preparing the salads and Gladys Pace for the yummy dessert. A very big thank you also goes to Robert Pratt who did the cooking under very trying circumstances, a lesser chef would have crumpled up his apron and whimped out after the obstacles he had to endure. The monthly fishing competition winners were: Senior James Baker, Junior Jacob Collinson and Mystery Jacqui Hemming. Congratulations and well done. Please note that there will be no club BBQ in December. By the time this edition is published our AGM and November BBQ will be done and dusted. Hopefully we will also have a new committee ready to carry on the good work of the outgoing committee and to put the final touches to the New Year Eve Function at The Landing. Speaking of which, have you booked for the New Year Eve Party at The Landing? Don’t forget that people who didn’t book were turned away last year so don’t be one of the disappointed ones this time. It is always a pleasure to welcome new club members and this month we introduce our latest members, Michael (Mick) Munro and Perry and Melissa Jones together with their children Jack and Kaitlin. Welcome, we all hope you enjoy what your new club has to offer. A small but enthusiastic group attended the Melbourne Cup function held at The Landing where fine food, fun and good company were aplenty. Our thanks go to Secretary Ros for organizing and single handedly running the event for the club. During the weekend 14, 15, 16 November, a club group of 28 souls journeyed to Lucinda for a Family Fun and Fishing Weekend. There was plenty of socializing (I didn’t know we were such a social lot), fun and hilarity but not much fishing was achieved with only one fish landed by Treasurer Di. However, ask her about “the one that got away” The Friday night BBQ went well despite the initially frozen prawn entrée so dinner was done in reverse, main BBQ meal, prawns then dessert. Babz Armitage won the joke telling competition but alas we cannot repeat her joke in this fine family magazine. We were later joined by members of the Alligator Creek Angling Club who were there for serious fishing for fellowship and camaraderie which went long into the night. Some members went fishing on Saturday or just for a cruise around the beautiful waterways in the area, we really do live in a wonderful place while some just lazed by the pool. We all went to the local hotel for dinner on Saturday night but most were back in their beds by 9.00 pm, apparently they had run their race on Friday night and had no steam left for any further social interaction. It was pleasing however, to note that Col Cattle represented our interest with the Alligator Creek crew well into the night. A huge thank you go to Treasurer Di for organizing the trip and doing the catering, food preparation and cleaning up, to Vikki Fischer for cooking and assisting with the food preparation and cleaning and last but not least to Dickie for cooking. Thanks also to all who attended and made it a special fun weekend. Dickie’s Fishing News. G’day Folks. Once again I have been press ganged into writing a few lines on the fishing news of the area by our scribe the honourable Neil Thompson who threatened to publish details of my alleged skullduggery on the club trip to Lucinda. I thought that I had a rather sober and well behaved trip in the company of El Presidentee Mr. Garry Luff. Getting on with the news. There are good reports coral trout, sweet lip, finger mark and mangrove jack being taken by spear along the pylons of the Lucinda Sugar Wharf, also good catches of reef fish species from Britomart Reef. Taylors Beach estuary and Cattle Creek are producing good catches of muddies and blue swimmers with the area also giving up great catches of bream, grunter and mangrove jack but depending on the time of day and the tides with early morning incoming tide seem to be the best. Lots of prawns are being taken in Olera, Scrubby and Rollingstone Creeks over the last week. As a result, schools of grunter, bream and possibly other large species following the prawns and bait fish up the creeks. One local had a good catch of prawns in front of Fishermans Landing and along the creek to the mouth. The good boating conditions experienced recently has allowed trips out to the islands and the reef with excellent catches of Spanish Mackerel, however, one of our club members reported a lot of sharks around White Rock at the southern end of Palm taking hooked fish before they could be landed. Also, spear fishermen (persons) have reported much shark activity in the area. The outer shoals from Olera to Mystic Sands are giving up mostly undersize doggie and spotted mackerel and a few nannygai. Safe boating and tight lines, don’t forget to put in a trip sheet prior to departure. . As this will be the final Rolly Rag for 2014 and therefore my final contribution, I wish to thank my 2 readers for their ongoing support. Natures Notes - Roy Mackay I am sure you will have noticed that the Dollar Birds and Rainbow Bee-eaters are back and several other species too on their migration from the North. Some even migrate from PNG. Up here in Paluma, the Venns reported seeing a spiralling column of "flying ants" termites - with Spine-tailed Swifts (White-breasted Needletails) diving through the column to feed on them. Flocks of Fork-tailed Swifts will also do this and both species of these birds can feed together in the same mass of insects. So despite the lack of rain we are noticing the changes in the seasons. No storms yet. Gregor Johann Mendel, an Austrian Monk in the Monastery at Brno in Czechoslavakia, was the founder of the science of Genetics. His published work on garden peas in 1865 was not recognised until 1900. So Charles Darwin was not able to use this paper in his own studies. So, science and religion can work together. In 1989, Brother O. William Borrel, a missionary and teacher at St. Xavier's High School on Kairiru Island, off the mouth of the Sepik River, PNG, published "An Annotated Checklist of the Flora of Kairiru Island, New Guinea". Paluma In the Clouds..Colwyn Campbell Forthcoming Functions This year as an experiment we are having a Christmas Function in the form of a “Tropical BBQ” on Saturday December 13th. It will be at 18.30 hrs in the Community Hall and we want you to bring a “tropical” plate to share and whatever meat you want to eat. The BBQ will be fired up and you can CYO [ Cook your own] or have it attended to by whoever volunteers to be chef for the night ? That could, perhaps, be dangerous….. As there will be no “Rag” in February we might mention that our St Patrick’s Night in 2015 will be on 22nd March following the good Saint’s Day by 5 days. It is a bring a plate to share and anything Irish will be most welcome. Breakfast with Andrew On Friday November 14th, at short notice, Councillor Sue Blom arranged for Andrew Cripps MLA [Member for Hinchinbrook] to have a breakfast meeting with some community members at Gumburu. Councillor Tony Parsons and 11 persons from the community attended. PDCA president Lynn Hyland brought up several items on behalf of Businesses / Emergency services and matters that the PDCA have already corresponded with Qld Govmt and TCC ; the lack of Mobile phone coverage and the impact this has on business and emergency services in particular. The inability to access NBN due to the lack of rural funding and the lack of satellite capacity. This may be addressed by a new satellite but not until 2015. Businesses do have an, often very low grade, ADSL connection but even this is not available to residential customers. The idea of a WiFi “hot spot” [or spots] in the village was suggested and met with approval as partly alleviating the lack of mobile coverage. The increase in traffic [partly due to the work at PEEC] was mentioned and its impact on road surface and edges and badly rutted verges was pointed out. The provision of a walking track to link from Lake Paluma to Ingham was also put forward and the need for upgrading tracks and Star Valley Lookout were stressed. Provision of speed bumps at either end of the village or, possibly better, a school zone was discussed as well as a sign at the bottom of the Range “No Fuel for xx Kms via gravel roads” [At Bluewater Springs]. The quality and quantity of the water supply was brought up and Sue Blom confirmed that the provision of a water treatment plant was in the pipeline. Altogether this was a highly profitable meeting in getting local concerns to those who can bring pressure to have them addressed. Lynn thanked Andrew, Sue & Tony for coming to meet with us and all thanked Bill Venn and Janette Furber for the venue and excellent breakfast respectively. Fires The very dry windy weather we have been having should have been a warning to all of the danger in lighting and tending a fire. Nevertheless, there have been two fires which necessitated the service of Rural Fire crews in November. One started on Ponderosa Road, Mutarnee and ran behind the pipeline and necessitated the backburning of the upper side of the Range Road from near the 16 km post to the Crystal Creek Carpark to gain control. It even necessitated closing the road to all but local or construction traffic on Saturday November 8th. It is believed that the fire was not tended after it had been lit and the wind did the rest. Another fire burned Offerman’s Block on Sunday 9th November and threatened to run across other five-acre blocks, one neighbouring property sustaining damage. It was contained by the PRFB and again it seems as if it was left untended. Tuesday History The normal Tuesday History Mornings will not operate on December 2nd or over the Christmas period, so we will not be open on either the 23rd or 30th of December but will resume on January 6th. Quite a number of villagers do drop in on Tuesdays and this is encouraged as providing a place for a chat and a cuppa and sometimes providing local knowledge to visitors who may call. Every Tuesday and Friday morning in summer you will find Babz Armfield bobbing in the beautiful pool at Rollingstone Beach Caravan Resort with a bunch of local ladies and a couple of brave blokes. For ten years she has been volunteering her time to lead the aquarobics group. Babz what brought you to live here? We had been working in remote Australia and on our leave we often headed to Townsville to visit friends. We had our hearts set on ‘landing’ close to the beach and headed north. We only got as far as Middle Earth before we found our paradise. Tell me more about living in the outback? Where do I start? I travelled so much back then that I logged over 100 jobs during my working lifetime …yes that is not a misprint 100! I managed the airport on Mornington Island and had various other jobs in aboriginal communities in places like Halls Creek. I picked tobacco in New Zealand, even became a leather machinist making bags and jackets and was the first female new car salesperson in Ballarat. I could go on but it would fill the whole Rag. Wow you have certainly seen a lot of this country. Oh we haven’t stopped. Richard has just finished fitting out a motor home so now we can do our trips in a little bit of luxury. You were honoured with a shared award for Senior of the Year at the last presentations. Tell me about your other community activities. Of course aquarobics is my great love but I also do line dancing and started music afternoons at the community centre and MC Australia’s biggest morning teas each year. As a survivor of breast and bowel cancer it is important to me to do something to help fundraise for the cancer related charities. On a lighter note let me ask you if you could have anyone alive or dead to a dinner party who would you choose. John Trevolta (love him), Barbra Streisand, Julia Gillard, and JFK. That would be a lively lot. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

PLAYGROUP The year is flying by and who can believe we are in November already. We have been busy at Playgroup making our Christmas decorations. We are heading to Bunnings to doing some really creative artworks with the talented Lisa and her Team. I have booked and confirm our all-important Christmas party, and this year we will be having Rollingstone host us. It is on the 4th December 2014 from 9.30am to 11.30am and Santa will be arriving around 11.00am. All you need to bring is a plate of Christmas food to share and a smile. For those of you that need a lift on the bus, please get your name on the booking sheet as it is filling up fast and we only have limited seats. Please RSVP to let me know who is coming along to celebrate Christmas with us. Our last Day for the year will be the Christmas Party, so I would like to Thank you all for your continued support of our Playgroup. I would also like to wish those of you moving on or not returning next year all the best for your future endeavours and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We also have a few of our children heading off to Prep, I would like to wish them every success as they start their next journey and hope they come and say hello every now and then. This term has been getting to know our local community, we have joined 2 of our local schools by hosting playgroup there twice a month and what an exciting time we are having with the kids really enjoying the change. We meet at our local schools on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday at Bluewater State School and the 2nd and 4th Thursday at Rollingstone State School each month. We have also teamed up with Bunnings Warehouse, they have hosted some of our playgroup sessions at our centres and we have travelled for some of our sessions to Bunnings Warehouse North Shore. Keep an eye out for the Christmas Party Flyer, this should be any exciting day for the parents and children.
