Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G’day All! Another great monthly BBQ night to welcome winter to our beautiful region. We had an excellent roll up and we all enjoyed the YUMMY fish and sausages along with an excellent variety of salads etc. As usual the desserts were tops. I hear really good comments about the food as members are enthusiastically feeding their faces. THANKS TO EVERYBODY WHO COOKED AND PROVIDED THE TUCKER. We played mini golf putting with team four taking the honours and awarded the gold prizes. CONGRATULATIONS GUYS WELL DONE. The Lound’s Fresh Seafood Raffle was won by Denis Cleaver. LUCKY DUCK! NOTES FROM THE R.T.C Hello Everyone, Is there an interest in the community that people would like to learn more about - I am looking for expressions of interest for courses and workshops that could be held at the community centre. The courses that come to mind are First Aid or perhaps Food Handlers. There are plenty of other lifestyle courses out there so if you know of something that would interest the community please let me know and I will see what can be organised. The Rollingstone Lions and RaDCA have purchased a Reclining lift chair, as a joint community service with the idea of loaning (short or medium term) the chair to residents with restricted mobility needs. Further enquiries contact the RTC 47707855 or Lion John Muller on 47707510. Don’t forget the murder Mystery Night 19 July - tickets are now on sale for $30.00ea at the RTC – get a group together – be the first to identify the murderer. School holiday program is all about animals. Starting 9am until 12pm on Tuesday 8 July you will get to experience trained birds of prey up close. Have a photo taken with these majestic birds. The Dogfather Dog Trainer will be able to give hints and demonstrate how to train your dog. Our local wildlife carers will also be attending with their babies it is always wonderful to watch the babies being fed. Thank you to Ian and friends for your plumbing prowess in redirecting the storm water away from the hall and Lions Den. Tai Chi is offered at the Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1pm. This exercise is designed to combine relaxation techniques, controlled breathing along with joint and muscle strengthening movements. Come and give it a go – you will be surprised at how good you feel afterwards. Seniors Week is coming around again in August. Put your thinking caps on as nominations for the TCC Senior of the Year are coming due. Nominations forms can be obtained from the RTC or online. The Seniors Luncheon will be hosted by Deeragun this year and will be at the Bluewater Community Centre. Numbers are limited bookings for Rollingstone can be made through the Seniors committee or through Evol at Deeragun…………………….Take care - Chris

As we lose yet another oldie from our midst, the “passing of eras” continues unabated. How I hate it. We bid adieu this time to Irene May, a stalwart within our midst for many years: a lady who served her country during wartime, was passionate about horses and kids and lovingly tended her community. Thank you, Mrs. May, and vale. John Friar recently met with an unfortunate accident in the form of a sting-ray barb penetrating his foot. As those of us who live here know, this can be extremely dangerous. John is not having a great time of it with infection the debilitating factor. However, we’re thinking of him and wish him a quick and successful recovery. At time of submission of these notes, we were unaware of any other locals “doin’ it tuff” health-wise. We know there’re quite a few who suffer constantly so we pass on our best wishes for their comfort and improvement. If there is someone we should’ve mentioned or know about but haven’t/don’t, we’re sorry but our thoughts and best wishes are with you.  Chris (Centre Manager) attended a forum during June to catch up with matters Senior. If you have ANY questions relating to Seniors (whether for yourself or another/others), please don’t hesitate to contact her for help. Remembering she is there for ALL health, welfare, community and administrative services. She is now also a JP (Qual.) – to be honest, you’d be quite surprised at the number of services that are now offered by Chris from the RTC.  By now, our security cameras will be in place. This is a bit of timely news for those considering causing a mischief at the Centre, for whatever reason.  Also, please be aware that we – the RTC and Chris – are able to assist should you urgently or as an emergency require transport to an appointment. We can deploy our Bus for this reason. It will, of course, involve a fee but you would understand that, should a situation be in a precarious position. This applies to all age-groups.  We (the Community Association) have contributed substantially towards the Lions purchase of an electric recliner/lift chair to be made available for loan to frail and disabled members (of all ages) within our community. This aid was recently acquired and is already being utilised by an elderly person to help with their quality of life.  And for the bad news: Council has made us start all over again with plans for the old Railway Station Building because we were told that we couldn’t have steps, only a ramp. As steps were included in the original application, the change apparently completely nullifies those plans/application and we are to start over again, with all attendant costs as if it were the first time around. Ggggrrrrr..............!!!  We applied for the Free Bunnings $450 Voucher as advertised on Facebook and as far as we know, we’ve been successful. This will come in very handy. Thank you very much, Bunnings. Brussell Sprouts: A much maligned veggie which can be so delicious with a little care and attention. Just remove any damaged leaves, cut a cross in the core of each one and (here comes the important part) cook in lots of salted, rapidly boiling water, without overcrowding, until crisp and tender. When ready, toss the brussell sprouts in some hot oil or butter or sprinkle with grated cheese and cook under a preheated overhead grill. Added BACON is also very delish! Things are really bad when you realise your wheelie bin goes out more than you do! Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart. Live well, love much, laugh often............“Sancho Panza”.

Education Focus In Hinchinbrook Since coming to office two years ago, the Newman Government has made a huge contribution to education delivered in state schools across Queensland, including in the Hinchinbrook electorate, of which I am very proud. Education is an extremely important part of the future of our young people, communities and our economy. For example, the Newman Government delivered a total of $3,833,647 in special grants under the Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund for schools in the Hinchinbrook electorate, to deal with school maintenance backlogs, which had become significant and embarrassing under the former Labor Government. Several schools in the Hinchinbrook electorate benefited from the delivery of tablet computers as part of the Newman Government’s eLearning for Special Needs Students’ initiative. E-tablets have proven to have enormous potential for students with a learning difficulty or disability, helping them to communicate and learn. Furthermore, all state primary schools in the Hinchinbrook electorate are receiving funding under the Getting the Basics Right – Literacy and Numeracy grants, which represents a major funding boost for literacy and numeracy programs that would help ensure young students were on the right track for future learning success. Now the Newman Government is looking to the future and developing a 30-year plan for education, with the announcement of the historic Queensland Education Accord initiative, to determine priorities for our schools and ensure future generations are given the best possible education and job opportunities. I will be consulting with local school communities, both primary and secondary, in the state, catholic and independent systems in the Hinchinbrook electorate, to ensure we have our say in this important process. This is an exciting opportunity to work together on a shared vision that sets clear priorities for the future

THE DEVIL’S ADVOCATE It’s time the purveyors of political misdemeanours addressed the subject of how much more money and (ridiculous) entitlements politicians receive than does the man-in-the-street, whether they (the pollies) have been worthwhile MPs or not. We all know how out of whack and criminal the amounts and entitlements are, but it’ll be a cold day in hell before anything is done to remedy this situation. Whoever the politician is that stands up and fixes this dilemma, will get just about every vote available; and then perhaps we CAN look forward to some of those Gold Cards and freebies-for-life awarded to the boys and girls of the old and bold brigade, who no longer serve on the benches or even contribute in any way whatsoever, being repudiated. The extravagances seem to be embarrassing even to the pollies – well, some of them – so it’s to be hoped something will be done............one day. Never pass up a good chance to shut-up!! Just wish those who use social media to vent their collective spleens – usually with a liberal helping of foul language - would take note of that little old adage. We are becoming a silver-spoon nation of whingers. People in their 60s and 70s who grew up in regular working-class families, usually doing it tough financially, are now complaining about everything as though they had a “royal” upbringing. Perhaps just fitting in with the rest of the population – particularly the Gen Y-ers and Baby Boomers! But don’t worry too much because someone will be along directly to pat you on the head, give you a belly-rub and tell you how tough you got it. Someone will be there (probably the media and/ or the PC police) to stoke that burning sense of entitlement you feel deep down in your belly. Time perhaps for a reality check by giving yourself an uppercut??? The Apostrophe – that much maligned and misused grammatical symbol. The mind-set is: let’s just use it wherever an “s” occurs, forget about the fact the “s” in that case may indicate a plurality..........just do whatever turns you on. The apostrophe is a punctuation mark used to mark omissions and possessives of nouns and pronouns and some (possessive) plurals.................NOTHING MORE!!! Experts say that as Australia becomes more global, successful and cosmopolitan; our unique expressions are dying off. Now, if that’s the case, that’s a downright shame. In our house, we try to include “Australianisms” as much as possible in our conversation. Often sounds a bit bucolic or “hay-seedish”, but for the sake of the preservation of such verbal uniqueness, it’s worth the effort. No doubt, Aussie expressions will eventually be found only in anthologies. People handle the truth less well than anything else, which is why the first reaction to truth is (usually) anger or tears. Might explain the outbursts of vitriol on social media, when the truth is provided via the protective anonymity of a distant pc. Who knows? Everywhere one looks on electronic and printed news outlets, there are Staffy X, Mastiff X, Great Dane X and Bull Arab X puppies for sale, or to give away or abandoned. WTH?? Have the owners of these dogs never heard about de-sexing/neutering? And if so, why do they feel the need to continue breeding pups that will never find decent, forever homes because they’re too many of them. And can someone tell me what constitutes a “Bull Arab” considering they’re not a registered or recognised breed? (The opinions expressed in this column are not necessarily those of the “RAG” editorial and RaDCA Management Committee.) P9

SENIORS GOING PLACES I have just a few offers and suggestions for Rollingstone Seniors trips for the next 12 Months. Until I have a idea of numbers I am unable to get quotes for accommodation or buses or tours. I would appreciate if you could indicate below if you are interested in any of my suggestions. And comments or suggestions to assist me in planning what the majority would like to do.

Trip 1

Malaysia:- as I have already booked flight tickets to Singapore for 26 th November 2014 I plan to visit Borneo Sabah. Any one is welcome to join us. Please give me a ring and I will give you a idea of my suggestions and any other suggestions greatly accepted. All travel will be booked independently but I am very happy to assist. A return flight Tsv/Bns/Kota Kinnabulla and stop over KL one way is approx $950 at present with Qantas/Malaysian airlines or you can travel Jest Star Cairns/ Darwin Singapore, on discount maybe for around $500.

Trip 2 Atherton:- I thought late February or when the Yungaburra markets are on would be a good time. It may be possible to get better prices off season plus it is cooler in the tablelands. If bad weather or cyclones are around it would be probably possible to cancel and rebook. Plan either a local bus or hire bus and if insufficient persons interested to car pool and share costs. A day trip to Herberton Village museum, Wine and cheese & chocolate tour, A visit to the Yungaburra Markets, just to mention a few ideas. As to the activities you go to would determine the length of time required.

Trip 3 Harvey Bay or Gold Coast:A good time for this trip would be after Easter and all school holidays (which is first week in April). Travel on your choice of transport. In 2015 there will only be the Spirit of Queensland (old tilt train) the railways have indicated that to travel then, when sitting up it will on be 1 pension concession? The only problem with the train is it may be a early morning arrival like 5am and a late departure about 10pm into Maryborough. Otherwise Harvey Bay is expensive to fly to. I am not sure that there is a lot of sites to visit other than a day on Fraser Island, but I am sure we could fill in a few days. Gold Coast:- Always plenty to do there! Off season cheap accommodation, good shopping including Harbour Town DFO, would be available. Plenty of transport options locally. If travelling by train no extra fee to Gold Coast Station.

It is over to YOU for numbers suggestions and ideas ASAP please call Gwen 47707540

Rollingstone & District Seniors Once again it is the end of a very busy month.!! 1st we had the markets which were very successful considering our cake donations and customers were down. Our next stall will be on the 5th July and all donations will be warmly welcomed. Bingo: Attendance nearly doubled in June which resulted in prices increasing. We will definitely have more popcorn at hand for our July BINGO Morning Melodies: Although the weather was terrible Morning Melodies were well attended and everyone enjoyed Little Patty especially Colin Pace who had quite a conversation with her!!!! We would like to thank the Kirwin Tavern for the good food and the complimentary desserts that we were all offered after our luncheon. Alex Ferlazzo ( Franks son from Bluewater Pharmacy) paid us a visit at our Bowling Morning to thank us for the donation we had sent him and he gave a lovely talk and was able to answer all our questions to our satisfaction. We now know all about LUGE racing!!! We wish him all the best for the next Olympics. For those of you who don't know Alex was the youngest competitor in the last Winter Olympics. He is an amazing athlete and he is looking for sponsors for his next Olympics if anyone is wanting to help! Our Progressive Dinner was a huge success according to all who attended. The food was terrific and I wish to thank all the cooks and the people who allowed us to use their homes for each item on the menu.

Our next outing is a trip to magnetic Island on the 8th July and Ten Pin Bowling on 22nd July Please advise early if you wish to attend. And payment needs to be in NOW !!

Remember our next BINGO will be held on 12th July

A General meeting will be held after Bowls on July 2nd and we look forward to a good attendance Take Care and hope you all have a good July‌.Cheryl

Gidday Rollingstone To a few… Put your hand up if you’ve ever heard or seen a car screaming past your place at some crazy break neck speed and thought to yourself, “That car MUST be doing about 200mile an hour! Where are the coppers when you need them?” Come on now… a quick show of hands please. OK, now keep your hand up if you’ve seen that car and recognised who it is or you were able to see the rego number. Now… keep your hand up if all you did from there was a big fat NOTHING – you didn’t want to dob – you didn’t want to get involved – you’re worried about what other people would say or think about you – you’re happy enough to just sit back and wish that it wasn’t happening or that someone else will do something about it – or maybe you jumped on the internet to see if anyone else had the courage or conscience to speak up, so you wouldn’t have to be first (or the only one). But when it was happening, did you call the police? Did you give the info to ANYONE who could actually do something about it? Or are you content to sit on your backside and whinge that it happened – after all, it isn’t YOUR job to look after this community is it? It isn’t YOUR place to do anything more that try to get all the gory details so you can tell the story of what you THINK happened. God forbid that you should actually want to step up and help protect the community you live in. To everyone… You see folks, it’s more than just words – it has to be more than just you knowing what’s going on for the sake of gossip - it’s more than just getting onto Facebook or Twitter and grumbling about it – it’s more than just YOU living here. Darren and me… we get the pointy end – and that’s fine with us - but we can’t do it without you. The Rural Fire volunteers and the SES are the same – point at them and have a smirk or a laugh at their expense, but they can’t do it without you either. I’m not asking for anyone to jump in and crash tackle a baddie or conduct their own investigation – but if something happens that concerns you, maybe… just maybe, you might want to tell us as well. There’s another advantage to that theory. I’m not as green as I am cabbage looking – we usually have a fairly decent idea of whose responsible for certain things in our patch, but there’s a huge difference between knowing and proving. It’s called “evidence” – we can’t charge someone without it (sometimes that’s what makes it seem like we’re not doing anything about your problem) – what you saw or heard can make all the difference… but only if you have the courage to stand up. ****************** Have you ever had someone in your life who manages to bring out your absolute best but still manages to wear you down into a jibbering mess – someone who can push your buttons without even realising that they’re doing it, much less the effect they have – someone who you can honestly say you would lay down your life for without even a heartbeat worth of hesitation or regret – someone who manages to teach you almost as many lessons about yourself, as you try to teach them about life? Ones that give depth and meaning to the silliest of ideas and can laugh off the world’s problems as quickly as changing channels on the telly. I’ve got a few people like that. Ones that I would fight for and defend, no matter what and yet I’ll threaten to tie them to the clothes line for a few hours if they don’t shut up while I’m on the phone. Ones that I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) do without but would occasionally happily trade them off to a passing tourist from a little town in the back blocks of Saudi Arabia, just because they thought they looked cute. Yep… I’ve got people like that – and one of them is a terrorist… and she just turned 8.

Stay safe Goughy

R.S.L. NEWS Rollingstone RSL held their Quarterly Meeting on Sunday 1st June with around 20 members in attendance. These meetings are important for the members to maintain contact with the committee and keep up to date with how the Rollingstone RSL is working. It was pleasing to see our oldest member, Keith Norton, was present, and Ewan noted that Keith was soon to have his 90th birthday. We also had Eddie White playing bowls with some of his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Eddie had been celebrating his 80th birthday, over a few days, I might add! Furthermore, Eddie noted yesterday, 22 nd June, upon winning the C Grade Championship, that “Life Begins At Eighty!” Congratulations to those members on achieving those birthday milestones. Ewan also noted that despite spending over $8 000 repairing the Memorial in 2013, the RSL is financially sound. This is due to the continued efforts of a dedicated group of members and supporters who attend or support our raffles and Goose Club each week. Special thanks to Gloria, Faye and Rob, Phil and Robyn, Reg and Dowie, who have come to my assistance when I have been endeavouring to do the raffles and Goose Club at the same time. Unfortunately my computer has been out of action for a couple of weeks and I haven’t been able to do a new raffle roster. Thank you to those who have volunteered to go on the roster. Friday nights have been rather quiet, but we have no difficulties selling the meat tray tickets, as the golfers are willing to purchase tickets and they sell reasonably quickly. Fortunately we have been able to sell the remaining Goose Club numbers each week and I have 2 lucky wins to announce. On the 23rd of May, Robyn Small won $700 and then 4 weeks later on 20th June, Gloria and Kon won $ 260. So sometimes there is quite a gap between the jackpot going off and at other times it comes up rather quickly. Either way, the win is great for the recipients. Both winners have been great supporters over the years, so congratulations to them. Thank you to Vonny for putting in the $100 each time, along with the RSL’s $100 to restart the jackpot at $200. So if looking for something to do on a Friday night, why not come over to the golf club for your chance to win! Further to our Quarterly Meeting, reference was made to the Wall at Bushy Parker Park. As explained previously, it was not possible to relocate the wall, as it would probably be damaged. The RSL had negotiated to place replica plaques on the Memorial when it was repaired. I mentioned this a few times last year at our committee meetings, but we decided to wait for a grant we were expecting. However, it was decided at this Quarterly Meeting, that we would replicate the plaques on the Memorial, and hopefully this can be done in time for Remembrance Day this year. Di Thompson also suggested the possibility of another wall at the beach. This was discussed, and is to be looked at in the future, depending on how many other people may desire to lay a plaque in memory of a loved one who has served. Hopefully we can get onto these replicas in the very near future. Sorry, a positive Ewan would say, we will get onto the replicas! President Ewan and Rod, Immediate Past President, represented Rollingstone RSL at the State Congress, held on the weekend in Townsville. I’m sure Ewan will have information to present at our next committee meeting on 30 th June. DIARY TIME: Monday, 18th August, Vietnam Veterans’ Day. Service at 10am at the Memorial at Balgal Beach. Please make an effort to attend if you can. This is usually a fairly small gathering, and a reasonably short service, but of course is still very significant to those who served in Vietnam or have relatives who served there. Finally, Mick and I are off on a holiday and the lovely Faye will be doing the Goose Club for a couple of weeks. I’m sure she will be run off of her feet as you clamber for your numbers. You will need to be quick as the “Grey Nomads” have returned! Lovely to see Geoff, Bernie, the 2 Rogers, Anne, Lynn, Gavin and Judy, back here enjoying the services of the golf club. Take care, and we will see you when we return. Cheers, Rhonda.

MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB

Our mens pennant team has just competed in the North Queensland Pennant competition and accredited themselves very well. We finished with two and a half wins from seven matches with the most pleasing feature being the performance of our new bowlers, who, in most cases , were playing their first `serious' games. All of the guys really enjoyed representing our little club and it was great that we no longer have to call on players from other clubs to make up the numbers. Highlights of the weekend would have to be Bob B throwing his arms into the air after every successful bowl ; the Terry F. jig and how easily certain players can be `encouraged' to play a good bowl ( 3 Fags Tony !). A great weekend and thank you to every player for participating. Our Mens Club Fours have been completed with Tim, Graeme , Peter and Michael being victorious. They will now be representing our club in the district Champion of Champions in a few weeks and we wish them well in bringing more glory to our club. Sunday morning Barefoot Bowls continues to thrive with our record now being set at 19. These fun mornings are proving very popular and its terrific to see new bowlers being introduced to our great game. The games are played in a different format to conventional games and all players are kept involved throughout a match. Tony B has taken over from Ashley in the `benefit ' stakes and is (temporarily) enjoying his run of luck with taking out the vouchers. Bowlers are reminded that names must be in by 9.30am at the latest to enable a 10 am start. I would like to personally thank the 16 bowlers who joined Robyn and I in celebrating our 40 th wedding anniversary after last weeks game. This was a great way to finish a brilliant morning and could be something that others might wish to consider when celebrating milestones…………...As always , please direct any enquiries to Phil Small on 0418 779 292. Thanks

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome to another riveting update of our Club’s news, gripes and generally good stuff. Later in this edition, you will read a segment we introduced last month on local fishing activities provided by none other than Dickie for which we are most grateful. The Club recently purchased a large TV for use at The Landing for functions like the NRL State of Origin nights, NRL/AFL grand finals etc. We will be advertising when these events will be on so please turn up and show your support for this venture. Numbers were down at the end of the month BBQ held on 30 May but those who attended feasted on the fine fare cooked by Jeff (I don’t cook fish) and Kim Cheeseman, well received potato bake made by Kim Cheeseman and scrumptious cakes baked by Jeanette Pratt. Thank you all. The monthly competition winners were; Senior Male, Mark Hemming with a 1.88 kg Barra. Senior Female, Lai Peng with a .21 kg Whiting and Junior Male, Brendan Baker with a .4 kg Bream. Congratulations. There were no Junior Female participants in April. John Sandeman has retired as co-coordinator of The Fishermans Landing markets and Rebecca has taken over that task. John, on behalf of the Committee and all our Club Members we thank you for grabbing what was a failing concept by the throat and making it work. We wish you all the very best in your retirement and thank you for a job well done. Rebecca has volunteered to take the reins so good luck Bec, we wish you well in your new endeavour. You all know Rebecca from BNB Beauty N Body who does the massages at the markets. Her contact Number is 0422198900 so if you have any suggestions, complaints or constructive criticisms Rebecca is available to discuss these issues, …..anytime, ….24/7, hehehe. The 30 odd people who attended the first State of Origin night at The Landing enjoyed watching the game on the big screen and the sausage sizzle. The number of supporters for each state was about equal so only about half of us went home disappointed at the final score. The number of people on our sick list is growing. It is pleasing to see that Ron Condren (Condo) is slowly improving but he still has a long recovery period. Dickie recently underwent a hernia operation and is laying low at home in convalescents. Popular rumour is that Dickie got a hernia from carry around a big heavy wallet. Mark Hemming dislocated his shoulder while attempting to avoid a collision between his boat and another boat that had been moored long term to the pontoon. We wish you all a speedy recovery. As I alluded to previously, the Grey Nomads have arrived in their droves. Please, be kind to them, embrace them, give them a big smile, say hello, welcome for they have endured a harsh journey to escape that terrible, cruel southern winter. High fuel prices, exorbitant caravan site fees, terrible roads, angry and abusive semi drivers to name a few. But, and a big but, ensure they know the fishing rules for this State. Ensure they know the legal sizes of the various species including mud crabs, ensure they know female mud crabs, no matter how big cannot be kept, ensure they know that ripping the claws from a crab will mean its demise, NO, they don’t grow back as most of them believe. Also ensure they know of the hefty penalties when, not if, they are caught. The Committee has asked me to bring the following items to everyone’s attention but to do so first I need to get cranky. Right, now I have on my cranky face so line up, shut up and pay attention. That includes you, the one on the end. Listen up The Pontoon – Right of Way. Vessels approaching or departing the pontoon have right of way so if you are fishing/crabbing off the pontoon (despite the no fishing signage), it is your responsibility to take in your lines before they become entangled around a prop. The Pontoon – Mooring. The pontoon was designed and placed to enable vessels to temporarily moor (10 – 15 minutes) while taking on cargo or passengers or for unloading at the end of a trip. It is not there to be used for short or long term mooring. So skippers, you cannot tie up there between tides while you go home to do the weeks washing or the gardening. Similarly, you cannot dump your vessel there and leave it there for days. Are you all still paying attention ? Good, lets move on, The Pontoon – Rubbish. Some people think it is OK to take their drinks, eats, bait etc to fish/crab off the pontoon (despite the no fishing signage) but are too inconsiderate or ignorant, lazy or just plain dumb when it come to placing their rubbish in any one of the ample number of bins around the area. Do the right thing. It does not take much effort to follow the above simple rules so lets all be considerate in our activities around the pontoon. There, that is the end of my cranky bit so bugger off and behave yourselves. The Club has received complaints about the dirty and slippery (read dangerous) state of the boat ramp. Our Club has no responsibility for the ramp, it is a Council issue and the problem has been brought to Council’s attention. So, if you have a complaint and have Councillor Suzanne Blom’s number …… Dickie’s Fishing News. Due to the south easterly trade winds to 15 knots plus along the coast, the fishing has been a bit quiet during the past few weeks. However, a number of hardy fishos have managed to try their luck in some of our local creeks between Lucinda and Saunders with Victoria Creek estuary at Taylors Beach producing a number of good Mangrove Jacks, Grunter and Blue Salmon. Crystal and Olera Creeks gave up some excellent Crabs, Blue and Threadfin Salmon and a number of Mangrove Jacks to 4 kg. Rollingstone creek, a reliable fishing spot, is still producing good Barra, Grunter and Threadfin Salmon. The best baits are live bait, soft plastic lures like vibes, gold bommers and curly tails in deeper holes, smaller lures like minnows and plastics around the mangrove snags With the approaching cool weather we should expect an increase of both Blue and Threadfin Salmon and some good Whiting catches. Another friendly reminder that membership fees will soon be due. The Committee decided to keep the fees at the same rate as they have been now for a number of years despite the ongoing cost increases to the Club. It’s a bargain at $50.00/family no matter the number of children you have and $30.00/single membership. Also don’t forget the end of month BBQ on Friday 27 June, 6.30 pm on the lower deck. We hope to see you there and as always it is free for members and $10.00 for guests/visitors who are most welcome. Fishing rule No. 27. Fishing will do a lot to build a man’s character but it will not make him truthful.

Until next month, Ninger

Rollingstone State School Celebrating 100 years in September 2016 As usual, students at Rollingstone State School have been very busy this term. We have had some outstanding reading achievements and the students are busily setting their reading goals for next term. Reports will be posted home to families at the end of this week. This term saw the whole school participate in Under 8’s activities. The theme of Under 8’s was “Everyone can play” and we certainly did!

The school moved around a variety of hands-on fun activities in their Peer Support groups, with the senior class leading the younger students as they participated in the activities. We made spray painted bandanas, exploding volcanoes, played with coloured foam and generally anything that made a mess. It was very exciting that the local Playgroup could join in with us on the day, and we loved having them in our school.

Our school disco was on last week and the students, parents and staff all had a wonderful time. The money raised at the school disco was for the Starlight Foundation and was coordinated by our wonderful school Chappy. The theme of the disco was ‘Super’ and we had many super heroes, super geeks, super students and a very super principal. Thank you to all of the families that supported our school disco. It is always great to see such community support. Mr Judd Burgess has been appointed as principal at Aitkenvale State School. We all congratulate him on his appointment. He has sent a message out for the Rollingstone community. A MESSAGE FROM MR JUDD BURGESS Dear Rollingstone Community, I understand there has been a long and frustrating wait to end the uncertainty of the Principal’s position of Rollingstone State School. This has ended this week with the news I have been appointed to Aitkenvale State School as Principal. I would not have got this far without my wonderful time at Rollingstone State School and the wonderful community. I will always have a place in my heart for Rollingstone as it was the community that supported me in my first Principal’s position. Rollingstone gave me the chance to become a Principal and a better person. My deepest thanks to you all, Mr B At this stage I will be continuing in my acting position until a permanent principal is appointed (and with a bit of luck, that will be me). Have a happy and safe holiday! Kacey Constantine Principal

Last term we added some additions to our playground with Sandra from re- creative, but we still have some more work to do, so bring along your ideas and we will see what we can come up with. This term the parent surveys will be handed out and this is your chance to tell us what you like and don’t like about our service, to help us improve what and the way we deliver these services to you, so please fill them out and get them back to us as soon as possible. Natures Notes - Roy Mackay Back from Britain and Paris. While there was little reference to nature on our tour, there was time to make observations as we travelled from one place to another. Before the main tour started Colwyn and I took a one day tour to Leeds Castle near Maidstone, Kent, not Leeds, West Yorkshire. From the castle we went to Dover where, yes, we saw the White Cliffs, the small town of Folkestone, and the ships leaving for Calais and the cars and trucks going to the Chunnel. It was very cold and very windy. We saw Gulls and Sparrows (you know that our Sparrows originally came from England, don't you?). And then we went off to Canterbury which was our main aim for this one day tour. I am not religious but I do like some of the appurtenances of religion - the architecture of churches, cathedrals and mosques, I also like organ music which we listened to in a few places. So, even before we started the main tour we noticed that the grass is greener in Britain than here, though the grass in northwest Tasmania would equal it. Then we noticed very large fields of brilliant yellow Canola/Rapeseed. In fact, we saw such fields right up to southern Scotland. Crows, Carrion Crows and Jackdaws were seen along the way and at Leeds Castle we saw White Swans, Magpies (Not the same species as ours) and Pied Wagtails and Mallard Ducks, which are often seen on park ponds here in Australia, and are common throughout Britain. First day on the main tour was to Stonehenge. It was bitterly cold and with a freezing wind. If there were birds or mammals (beyond sheep) to be seen there, I never saw them. All the same, while we all know what Stonehenge looks like, you must see it to get a better appreciation of its size and its significance. More next month. However, it was good to get back home to see Riflebirds, Catbirds, Macleay and White-cheeked Honeyeaters and Rainbow Lorikeets and even to see a Yellow-footed Pouched Mouse running across my lounge room floor.

As usual there will be gift vouchers to be won and some keen gardener will have their name engraved on the Alison Evans Memorial Trophy. Good gardening. Rainforest Inn: We are pleased to report that the “Rainforest Inn” is extending its operations to open for lunch from Wednesday to Monday inclusive. With the increase in tourists during the winter months this goes far to provide a satisfactory service to the casual visitors who arrive expecting to be able to buy food in the village. The lunchtime hours ; from 11.00 to 15.00 hrs ; should cater for everyone. Another new addition is the provision of Breakfast from 08.00 hrs on Sundays and evening meals are available, but only if pre booked before 16.00 hrs on the day. The Motel remains operational seven days a week but, naturally pre-booking is strongly advised. They are catering for a private function on Sunday June 15th so will not be able to cater for casual visitors on that day. After the lack of facilities in Paluma in the past we wish Neil and Jennie all success in their enterprise. History Display We now have two new albums covering the progress of education in Paluma. Many thanks must go to Linda Venn for her meticulous research and presentation of these records. The albums cover the Paluma State School from 1950 - 1968, then the Paluma Environmental Centre and finally the Paluma Environmental Education Centre as we now know it. There are many interesting snippets of information and some interesting photos down through the decades. The list of student names makes for interesting reading too. We wonder who was the wayward child who required punishment for hanging about in Benham Creek !! The History project will not be open on Tuesday July 29 due to the Art & Craft exhibition. Fire Brigade news The “Paluma Push” is being held on Sunday 20 JULY 2014. The brigade will perform its usual role in running a number of check-points along the course to Hidden Valley. This year we need some extra help to make up for some volunteers who can not assist. Would you please contact me - Michael Drew - on the phone numbers or, preferably, the email address at the foot of this paragraph, if you are able to help in this vital activity which ensures the safety of entrants in the “Push”. There will be a debriefing barbeque at the Community Hall at about 17.00 hrs on 20th July following the event. Have you ever wondered what you would do if your gas bottle caught fire in Paluma, so far from the assistance of the Townsville Fire Brigade ? The Paluma Brigade is intending to arrange a short demonstration by an expert in the field of dousing gas bottle fires if there is sufficient interest in such a project. Would you please indicate if you are willing to attend such a demonstration by notifying me as as soon as possible on the eMail address shown. The National Parks Service recently advised that it will be conducting Fuel Reduction Burns. Please be aware that some of these burns may affect the use of the Range Road.Michael Drew: drewma4810@gmail.com. Phone:4770 8638 Paluma 4771 5522 or 0428 779 302 P 27
