“Closing the Gap” Community Fun Day @ Rollingstone Community Centre
31 August 10am - Carer’s Meeting with “Selectability”
We have some really wonderful events and activities planned for July, August and September. The Pineapple Festival is on 10 September; our annual Carboot Sale 16 July and Art Exhibition 15,16,17 July along with the Seniors meet Juniors Morning Tea and Activities 29 July and a Camp Oven Cooking Workshop 30 July. In August an invitation to all new residents of the district to come to the Community Centre to be welcomed by your new community and be informed about the groups, activities and events in the district. A week later we are planning “Closing the Gap” celebrations embracing Indigenous heritage with Craft activities, Indigenous dancing and much more. There is a small explanation of each activity below: *Firstly and most importantly, please note that for July only Margaret the Vet will be at the Community Centre on Monday 18 July starting 9am. Please add this change to your diaries and remind your friends. This for July ONLY, back to normal in August. The Centre is looking to re-establish the Carers meetings here in Rollingstone. Kathryn from Selectability is convening the meetings with the first meeting to be held on 31 August 10am to 11.30am. Please note this in your diary if you are in a caring role or know someone in a caring role who would benefit from a meeting such as this. A Camp Oven Cooking Workshop is being held at the Community Centre on Saturday 30 July. Starting at 8.30am for 9am. The Association is subsidising this activity and the cost to participants is only $15. All meals during the day will be supplied within this cost. You will need to book your place as numbers are limited. (If you have already put your name down please confirm with me (Chris). 47707855. See the flyer on page???? Seniors meet Juniors – 29 July 9am-11am. Another fun activity the Association is holding is a Seniors Meet Juniors Morning Tea. Want a Grandbaby fix or you are living away from your parents and want the Children to have some exposure to Grandparent figures – please come to this event. Please call 47707855 to book for catering purposes. 13 August is the date of the New Resident’s Morning Tea. This morning tea is open to all residents of Rollingstone Balgal Beach regardless of the amount of time you have lived here. Please come along to this event especially if you are new to the area and would like to meet other new residents or some of the long-term residents. Carboot sale 16 July – 9am-1pm. It is true – one’s trash is another’s treasure. This is an opportunity for locals to hold a stall to move on some of those items that are no longer suiting your lifestyle. There are no seller’s fees to be paid for the stall, the Lions will hold their famous sausage sizzle and Dan & Mon’s Coffee van will also be in attendance. As in past years we have coupled up the Art Exhibition on the same weekend. 19 August will see the community come together to experience Indigenous Cultural immersion with “Closing the Gap” Community Fun Day Celebrations. This activity is still in the planning phase so more information will be advertised as it comes to hand. Sunday 26 June saw the Volunteer Appreciation Function held. What a lovely day – relaxed atmosphere, great food, comfortable conversations and from comments received – everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to the Lions for catering; the crew who set up and decorated the room and to the Association for the opportunity to thank our Volunteers. Just in case you do not know where to find the Community Centre – The Rollingstone Community Centre is located at the end of Community Crescent. When driving towards Balgal Beach on Balgal Beach Road – take the first right hand turn on to Mystic Avenue. Then take the first right hand turn on to Community Crescent – at the end of Community Crescent you will come across the entrance to the carpark at the centre. ‘Love to see you at one or all of the above activities – Look after yourself – you’re the only one who can. Cheers Chris Rollingstone Rag, June 2022

Rollingstone Athletics Day A beautiful day was had down at the Rollingstone Community Centre for our Athletics Day. Cranes took home the victory with over 614 points and the Crows followed closely behind with 574 points. A big thank you to Jenni Jackson (PE Teacher) for making it all possible and a big congratulations to all of the winners and participants. All of the students had a great time being competitive and everyone showed great sportsmanship. It was great to see the RTC playgroup children get involved and join in on the fun as well.
We’d like to thank the RTC Management for allowing us to use the facilities and also the Lions Club for the use of their kitchen. Our P+C ladies do such a great job cooking and catering to everyone and the ability to do so on site makes it so easy! So thank you all very much. We would also like to thank our local farmers for donating a whole bunch of fresh fruit for the students. We really do appreciate it. A big thank you to the Fehrenbachers, Paces and Berras for your continued support and generosity towards our school. And last but not least, a big thank you to our very own Andrew Stallman who always puts in enormous hours behind the scenes getting everything ready and set up for our students to enjoy. We hope our families enjoy their holidays and have a great two weeks off.

NEWS
During June we lost another of our longer-term residents. Peter Cahill was a really nice man and a great bloke, enjoyed by all who knew him. He was kind and funny and always happy to help. We’ll miss him. Vale, Peter. Also passed, was Marion Accorsini who was the wife, Mum and Grandma in one of our well-known local pineapple farming families. She was also Gladys Pace’s sister. Vale, Marion. John Ellerton (Norwegian Jon) is having an extremely tough time, health-wise, as are Vanda Simmons, Stuart Humphreys, Ps. Bob Richardson, Terri Dallman, and Jan Giles. And having had hip surgery while this issue was in production was “Frank, our Friendly Farmacist”. We wish all these special folk good luck and a rapid recovery.
John Holliday had his 80th birthday during June. Good one, Johnno! And Remy Pace turned One (1) – luvly stuff!! • The Washer/Dryer facility is up and running!!! Now, remember, there is only (one) 1 unit, so you could arrive to

We would consider a weekend emergency, but it would need to be genuine – we, too, have lives to lead and spend most of those lives at the Community Centre as it is. Not just going over to open up for someone who’s just arrived in town and wants to get going again. • Our PURPLE POPPY Project is going wonderfully. Several local ladies have responded enthusiastically, and we’ve
collected 153 crocheted poppies. Suzi Vincent and Deb Calder are thrilled with the result and we must publicly thank Lynne Prytherch, Pam Griggs, Bronwyn Sant, Ann Martin, Rhonda Wallace, Moira Sharkey, Cheryl Pearson, and Merle Douglas for their efforts. Suzi has some ideas as to what will be made up using the poppies for presentation at relevant events/functions. In JULY, we have some events coming up which might appeal to the general public (which is difficult to do these days): The Car Boot Sale & Art Expo; the Kids and Oldies morning; and the Camp Oven Cooking Workshop. Be nice to see a good attendance at these functions. Cool Weather events all over the place presently and coming up. Need to read the “Rag” and Facebook to keep an eye on what’s happening and there’re lots at this time of the year. SOMETHING of WHAT’S HAPPENING at the 2022 PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL This year, we’re once again “doin” the Pineapple Festival! Much has occurred and much has changed over the past 2 years, so it’s a l-o-n-g road back. We’ve a new Management Committee, and some other new admin-type innovations, so we’re desperate that it should all work for us AND the public. We’ve dropped a few things and, in their place, we’re trying others; we’re keeping it simple with an emphasis on catering for all ages to make it a Happy Day Out for all attending. So, here’s some more info regarding what’s happening and what we’ve got to offer this year: • Well, first up, we’ve got 40 Market Stalls. Hopefully, they are of such diverse nature that they provide lots of selection and enjoyment. • And then we’ve got numerous varied Food Outlets for your delectation. • About 8-10 Displays of different persuasions and hopefully of interest to our patrons – which is yourselves! • In the Hall, you’ll find the local P. & C. Tea Room; the kids Colouring-In competition entries will be on display; the Cooking Competition entries – 3 categories – Pineapple Jam, Pineapple Chutney, and Pineapple Fruitcake each with a First and a RunnerUp/Consolation prize; the Adult Art Competition exhibits all with a Pineapple theme and a First and a Runner-Up/Consolation prize; and the History of the district and industries on purpose-built boards as
found in museums; plus some limited Op Shop items. (There is no Entry Fee for any of our competitions; but we’d love for the cooks to make extra of whatever they’re submitting for judging and everything will then be donated to the Memorabilia Stall for sale, please). • On the Hall Verandah, will be a Book Fest outlet, a well-stocked Memorabilia Stall, and a Bumper Cake Stall. • As well, the Op Shop will be operating at full speed at the end of the big hall. • There’ll be the ATM and the First Aid and Security. And Mr. Harvey has kindly loaned us his paddock off Balgal Beach Road for parking. • It costs nothing to attend (no entry fee, in other words) but a Gold Coin donation would be much appreciated. None of this money is retained – it all goes back into the community: maintaining the Generator, dispersed among the area Schools, etc., donated towards community-related projects, along with the mounting Bills and Permits to which the Festival is subjected. We start each year with a float of $4,000 which has been in place forever. For the next month until the Festival (in September), we’ll do one more article in August about what’s happening at this year’s Festival plus the Programme. So, see you in August.

Hello all, from the A@RTeam, We hope you are all well and safe while Covid still runs rampant. Time is marching on and our Annual Exhibition is now only 2 months away. Keep opening night, Friday 15th July free. Write it in your calendar now. If you can’t make it to that celebration, then...LUCKY YOU, we are open all day Saturday the 16th July alongside the Boot Sale, but closing later at 3pm as usual. And again, on Sunday 17th until 3pm. As you can imagine, we are gearing up for that event in July but we will not be neglecting you, our Community. There will be another Bubbles and Brushes for this year and that one will be one the 4th August. You will have the choice of either following the painting presented or choosing your own subject. There will, of course, be artists present to help you out.
We also intend having a table at the Balgal Beach Market in July and the following months, and will make our presence felt at the Pineapple Festival in September. For further information contact Ann Martin: 0408100083 or Rosa Christian: 0439672906. Cheers from the A@RTeam. Peter Simpson at the A@rteam's goodbye dinner. Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G.Day All, QUESTION? What would you think about going to the beach with all your best friends sitting in the shade or sun keeping warm laughing and joking with everyone, and then having a beautiful brunch and being able to watch the sea on such a beautiful morning. Well our club did just that at 10am on Sunday 10 June. It was so relaxing. The food was cooked on the BBQ by our great cooks, Bruce and Mark. We had sausages, bacon and eggs, baked beans, onion, toast, coffee and tea. WOW. They did a great job, all members raved about how good the food was and plenty of it. Thanks also to the committee ladies who did a wonderful job with the catering. Rhonda Smith won the lucky members draw and the raffle prize, a Lound’s fresh seafood voucher. How lucky was that. Very lucky lady. She was so excited. We will NOT be going to Bivouac on the 10th of July; the trip has been put on hold till a later time. Our next BBQ will be at the Community hall on the 10th of July 5.30 pm so hope to see you all there for a good fun night. Visitors are always welcome at our BBQ nights. Meals cost $10 for adults, children under 12 are free. Members are always free. Good food and good company always. Phone Linda on 47707991 for information or bookings. Stay healthy and happy. Best regards from your Committee.

We are into the winter weather we have, cool nights and perfect days, who would live anywhere else. I have once more been lucky or unlucky depends how you interpret my tale. The beginning of June, I had a female agile wallaby jump my back fence with her joey, yeah ok, big deal you say BUT she then hopped over the gate and left her joey here in my yard. Like hello what’s the go here. She returned 2 days later and fed it, then returned 2 days later and fed it, leaving her huge mate out the back which delighted me as he was (is) big. Then suddenly things changed. Mumma kept coming into the yard but not to feed her young boy, yep I checked, a boy. She came in for the sweet potato and muesli mix I feed the young ones in the compound. I felt that the joey was too skinny so decided to try and bottle feed him which usually is not successful as they know it is not mothers milk, but he actually attempted to drink, very messy but took some so I was very pleased. I have managed to feed him twice more. I have come to the realization that I am the unpaid babysitter as we are now in week 3 and her joey is still here and she comes and goes at will. Hussy. It is nice to have something like this happen as it gets rather depressing when all we see is injuries resulting in death. There have been a few big eastern greys hit lately and lugging them sure tells both Chrissie and my age. Where is Superman when you need him. Keep enjoying this lovely weather and catch you next time. …...Ciao Gaye ‘n’ Chris Rollingstone Rag, June 2022

Rollingstone RSL June has certainly been a busy month for our local RSL. On Sunday the 5th June, the Golf Club hosted the AGM, presided over by Rod Girvan and followed by a fabulous lunch. Thank you to all who attended. Welcome to new RSL Secretary, Anna McRae. One of the many duties the Rollingstone RSL has in our community is to be able to contact, and at times, support veterans of all services. This month we were able to help support a new veteran to Rollingstone, Peter, with the help of Mates for Mates Townsville. If you know anyone in the community who is a veteran and would appreciate a home visit, please call Padre Bob on 0438 455 302, or President Ewan on 0417 719 043.

Hello Rolly Rag Readers, Well, we are halfway through another year already but unfortunately it has been a very busy period for emergency services on our roads due to several traffic crashes on the Bruce Highway. As most of us have now experienced, whenever there is a crash on the Bruce Highway it normally results in very lengthy road closures and whilst I acknowledge the inconvenience to everyone, it is not something that we as the local Police can make any quicker and most often, we ourselves do not know how long the highway will be shut for but usually expect it to be for several hours. The reason for the closure in most serious crashes is to allow for Crash Investigators to attend, document and process the scene. The road is then cleared of debris and finally is inspected to ensure it is safe to be used by the public. This does take a considerable amount of time. Tragically, we recently had another serious traffic crash in our community which resulted in the highway being shut for nearly nine hours with no possible detours available. Whilst working at the job we were approached or contacted by several concerned parents trying to return home to their kids or trying to get to Townsville to pick up children from school. This might be a good time for parents especially those new residents to our community to start considering your contingency plan: • What will you do when the highway gets closed? • Where can you go and stay until the road is reopened? • Do you need to contact your children’s school, to see if they have emergency after-hours care for this type of situation? • Do you have family or friends that could collect your children for you? It’s Just something to take the time now to think about and discuss with your friends and family. Secondly, whilst on the topic of road closures, the 2022 Paluma Push is on again soon. This year it is being held on the 16 th July. During the event, Mount Spec Road from Paluma to the Paluma Dam turn off will be closed for some time to allow the competitors through so please plan ahead if you need to use the road or even better if you have the weekend off, head on up early pick a nice spot beside the road and cheer the riders on as they pass. Just be mindful of the extra traffic expected over the weekend on the range. Once again everyone, please take care and stay safe!
Mystic Sands Golf Club Our club was represented at Charters Towers on the weekend of 18 and 19 June for their open competition, by Robert Perkins, Jim Johnstone and Frank Ostrowski. Robert Perkins won B grade. Our ladies travelled to Proserpine for the Proserpine Ladies open on 18 and 19 June! They all had a buzzing start to the weekend at Proserpine on Friday night as they assisted in a head-on collision outside their motel, so their minds really were not in the game Saturday morning. Course Conditions were windy and the club open a new Par 3 on hole 2 for our first day of play. Results were well below our best but we enjoyed some bonding with fellow golfers and look forward to our next Open at Ingham and Charleville this weekend. Only 3 weekends till Ladies Open 9thJuly and Men’s 16thand 17thJuly, get your entries in via admin@mysticsands.com.au Mick and his team have really been putting in the hours on course and its coming up a treat, Great work guys!!!

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club Inc The Members and Friends of the Fishermans Landing Fishing and Social Club Inc.; have been deeply saddened by the loss of Member: Richard Pickering. Richard’s history with the Club dates back to when the Club first established and his involvement with the commencement of community projects that continue to benefit locals and visitors alike, today and into the future. In the early 2000’s, a forward thinking small group of locals bonded together to float the idea of a pontoon adjacent to the boat ramp at The Landing and after having successfully strived for a revamp and much improved boat ramp. Richard’s input as an engineer, having dealings with all levels of Government and their departments, was invaluable. The undertaking of this project involved an enormous amount of volunteer time and expertise by the committed group and Richard’s guidance and contributions were a very large part of this project. From initial positioning, design phase, compliance with the Tidal Works Code, the list must have seemed never ending but Richard powered through with abounding passion and conviction that the job be done to enable the Community to have a structure for practical use well into the future. Richard’s sense of fun, love of family, his devotion and support for and from his loved partner, Babz, are many of the aspects we shall all miss. Many trips and social gatherings witnessed his giving, loving and caring persona and his ability to have the best time always! So many stories out there are to be fondly remembered. Richard did not allow illness to dull his zest for life, his passion of caring for others and always had good words no matter how he was suffering. A positive attitude and stoic resolution with dignity aided his fight to remain with his beloved Babz for as long as he could. His contribution within many communities across a wide demographic, commitment to family and friends, will be remembered….Rest Peacefully Richard. The regular Monthly BBQ is held on the last Friday of each month. A courtesy bus is available for those who would like to have a drink without the risk of capture. Members and children eat free, Non-Members $15 per person. Our monthly BBQs are not a BYO event. Please email us for further details: fishermanslandingfishingclub@gmail.com

Toomulla News AED (Defibrillator) available at little library in Herald Street
from everyone at the meeting. Some of the items reported on were beach erosion, a walking lane to the highway bus stop, a better turning lane on the highway for southbound traffic, maintenance of beach walkways, a bin at the Barramundi Bay emergency boat ramp, and gates at the end of Herald Street. Several new ideas were raised by those who attended.
Three lucky ticket holders will score big in the Toomulla Beach Winter Raffle when it is drawn on 15 July. Up for grabs is a six-burner Jumbuck BBQ, a $50 Voucher, and a Wine Pack. Tickets are $1.00. If you have not got your tickets yet, see one of the committee members of the Toomulla Beach Community Association. You need to hurry.
Now the bad news: The attendance at both events was poor. This may mean that Toomulla Beach residents are not interested in community events and what can be done to improve our idyllic life here at the beach…more likely, it is general apathy because since Councillor Ryder’s meeting, I have been approached by people asking what happened at The Community Association has put on two excellent events the meeting. “I was going to come but…”just doesn’t cut it.“I in the past few weeks. First was the Bee-Centric Community forgot, I had to take some things to the tip, my partner had Learning Experience Day. Come on community, we can do better than that. The second event was a Meet Your Councillor get together on Saturday 11 June. This was followed by a sausage sizzle and drinks. Councillor Margie Ryder reported on progress with several issues that have been raised by the Community Association and she listened to comments and problems

AED (Defibrillator) available at Paluma Community Hall for public use (near the main entrance door to the hall up the ramp)
Winter has certainly arrived at Paluma. Temperatures have been down to single digits overnight and residents on the outer western blocks have reported some morning frost. The smell of burning wood fires permeates the crisp mountain air in the village at dusk and dawn. The days have been splendid with dry, fine weather and clear blue skies. It’s a brilliant time for getting outdoors to spruce up the garden or enjoy one of the local walking tracks or a spot of bird watching. Speaking of our feathered friends, the Satin Bowerbirds are busily courting with the male birds building their bowers filled with blue trinkets to attract the females. The Victoria Riflebirds are displaying with their impressive wing clapping dances and of course, the everpresent scrub turkeys are busy dismantling my carefully tended garden and pot plants! Such is life at Paluma. Our local legend Leslie Hyland celebrated his 91st birthday on 14 June. Leslie’s friends joined him at the Rainforest Inn for a special morning tea and birthday cake. It was a chance for us to thank Les for his ongoing service to the Paluma community as a dedicated volunteer for anything and everything. Les made a heartfelt speech, reminding us of the value of community spirit and friendship. We are the lucky ones. How many communities can boast a 91 year old who is an active member of the SES, Rural Fire Brigade and regular volunteer for every community event. Not to mention his long -term service as our resident Barman for monthly socials and one of the long-term volunteers for the Paluma History Display. What a treasure is Leslie! The ‘Paluma After Dark’ walk was held on 18 June with
Rollingstone Rag, June 2022
increased attendance this time round–no doubt due to the brilliant weather. About a dozen people joined the walk hosted by Jamie and Don. We took a night walk around Don’s Hussey Road block observing a green-eyed frog and leaf-tailed gecko. The troop then headed off along the walking track through the dense rainforest to Ethel Creek Falls. With torches and UV black lights at the ready we saw fluorescent fungi, lichen, supplejack vine and other types of rainforest leaves and vegetation. A native rainforest rat darted across our path at one point, but was too quick for us to identify. Several handsome spiders, a stunning moth and other insects were observed going about their nightly activities. Returning home along Hussey Road, Juanita spotted a sugar glider in the canopy of some wattle trees. This was the first time many of us have seen an arboreal marsupial at Paluma so it was a special treat indeed. A very informative and educational night was the outcome, with some of Paluma’s long time residents kindly sharing their local knowledge of the rainforest and its inhabitants. While June has been relatively quiet on the social scene the last week of the month is a big one for the Paluma Community. The annual Bush Dance with Wattle n Gum takes place on 25 June from 12pm to 4pm at the Community Hall. The Paluma Community Market is held the morning after on 26 June from 9am to 1pm. We expect good attendance at both events with the beautiful winter weather. We’ll report on these big events in the next edition. Don’t forget the annual Paluma Push Bike Race is coming up on 16 July. More information is available from Outer Limits Adventure on their website. You can also check out what is happening in our community with village news, events and upcoming activities regularly posted on our Paluma.org website. See you soon on the (not-so-misty) winter mountain-top at Paluma. Michele Bird….mbird09@bigpond.com
