Letter to the Editor:

THANK YOU.

On behalf of the Ravenshoe, Heritage Steam Railway, I would sincerely like to thank the Editor of the “Rolly Rag”, Councillor Sue BLOM and the residents of the Northern Beaches for their support in our fund raising venture of collecting and selling aluminium cans to help fund ongoing expenses of the railway. Following the publication of my first article in the March Edition of the “Rolly Rag”, I was astounded by the response and I thank you one and all. We have a number of new collections within the area between Bluewater and Crystal Creek, including the Paluma Environmental Education Centre, who have offered to collect the cans in the township of Paluma on our behalf. We also intend to seek the support of the Paluma and District Community Association. I would like to express my very sincere gratitude to the residents of Toomulla for their fantastic support. I believe that this community, through the Toomulla and District Community Association, would have given us the best response to our original article. I am staggered by the support and I think of how many cans would have ended up in the refuse tips from this area before we introduced this initiative. You’ll notice that we have installed a new Collection Bin opposite the Community Centre. As previously reported, we (Barry JONES and myself), collect the cans every Sunday (or twice a week during the Tourist Season) and I travel an average 80km each trip each time, but I do not claim any reimbursement for the fuel. I get sufficient satisfaction from the support of the locals and the pleasure of banking the money into the Railway’s Bank Account. For your information, on the 23rd February, we sold 221kg crushed cans, for which we received $221.00. Some 4 weeks later, we sold another 231kg of crushed cans for which we received $231.00, plus $20.25 for some Extruded Aluminium donated by Warren and Wendy HARVEY, which bought the total to $251.25. This means that so far in 2015, we have raised some $472.25 from the sale of cans from this area. I also have the pleasure of advising that on the 22 nd April, I banked $370.00 into the Railways Bank Account. The amount of $102.25 was expended purchasing steel and fabric to build additional collection bins and frames for wool bales used for the collection of cans. If you would like to join us in this Fund Raising Project, please contact me on 0428-752575 and give me your details so I can include you in our list. Again, I express my very sincere thanks to all of those who have been and are supporting this fund raising program. Warren BUTTERWORTH. P2

NOTES FROM THE R.T.C v It is great to be back – travelling overseas always helps me to appreciate what we have in Australia. No matter what, I say we are still the “lucky country”. While in Gallipoli, it was hard to put into words the feelings experienced when hearing the hardship and depravity our soldiers endured. Not to mention the stupidity of the campaign and the bravery of the everyday soldier doing his bit, knowing it was a futile battle and totally against the odds. In 1934, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, President of Turkey, sent these next words to an official Australian, New Zealand and British party visiting Anzac Cove: Those heroes that shed their blood, and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side, Here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries ... Wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have Become our sons as well. These words are now inscribed on the Turkish Monument at Ari Burnu.  A big thank you to both Sue and Lynne for standing in for me – you both have done a wonderful job.  Exercise classes: We are very fortunate to have three different exercise classes to offer weekly. Benita presents her Weight Circuit Class Fridays at 9am, Nicole provides calmness and serenity with Yoga on Wednesdays at 1pm and especially for the day time workers – Jo pushes you through your paces on Tuesday evenings at 6pm with Boot Camp. – See the ads in the Rag for prices etc  It is important that we constantly thank our volunteers – without your generous donation of time and expertise this centre would not be in such good condition. I am not just talking about our wonderful girls and blokes in the Op Shop, the Station, doing the maintenance and the bus driving – I think it is a forgotten fact that the Management Committee also consists of volunteers who give so much to this centre and community – not for financial gain or glory but so that the community has a place they can come to meet up with friends, socialise, for assistance when things get tough, to play, exercise and to gather for celebrations. I give the RaDCA Management Committee a big thank you: You are doing a wonderful job for this community.  Emergency Relief at NOTCH in Deeragun. There is a major change to the Emergency Relief program provided by NOTCH Deeragun from 20th April. Emergency Relief is only available on Mondays and Fridays from 9.00am to 12noon. If help is required outside these hours please contact the Salvation Army on 1300 371 288 for an appointment.  The Centre is looking at undertaking another garden project and is asking the community for the donation of plant pots of all sizes. These can be left on the verandah of the hall. Thank you in advance.  Our Op Shop continues to grow in strength and sales. This is purely due to the quality of the donations received from our community and the talent of our volunteers. Thank you for your donations – keep them coming they are very much appreciated. Remember we are also open on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. We are always looking for more volunteers in the Op Shop and the Station, please give me a call to register your interest. If a full day sounds too much half days are available.  Need to go into town but do not have transport? The Rollingstone Community Bus runs on Thursdays starting out at 8am from the Community Hall. $15 from the hall or $20 pickup and delivery to home for Rollingstone, Balgal Beach and Toomulla. $15 pickup and delivery to your home for all other stops on the Northern Beaches. There are 9 seats available so booking is necessary. Call 47707855 to book.  The RTC is here to help – need to photocopy, print, laminate, use the computer and/or internet, contact/report to Centrelink, need a question answered or help finding a service, give me a call, if I do not know, we will find someone who does. Need documents signed by a JP – we can assist with that too – remember please bring you photo ID.  The Community would like to wish Darren and Puy all the best with their new posting. You were not here for long, however you certainly take a piece of Rollingstone’s collective heart with you…...Take care

Chris

Not so well.....Gail Blackley, Nevis Foster, Vi Kennedy (fall). There are no doubt about whom we we unaware. May you all feel so much better soon. Ric and Helen Dyer are no longer part of our community. Ill health and fragility have determined that they needed to be in a care facility. They were vibrant members of our community for many years and their contribution to our lifestyle will be sorely missed. During May, we said good-bye to Debbie (Blondie) Geritz-King who passed away after a lengthy illness. Before she succumbed to her illness, Debbie and husband Reg were pretty much into everything! She too will be sadly missed by all of us who knew her. Vale,

Deb.

At the RTC, we have available (for the cost of a gold coin) posters of “Common Snakes of the Townsville Region”. The money collected goes to the Townsville Snakecatchers’ Group. These posters are really most impressive! WOW – what a day it was for the Seniors’ Cuppa Tea for Cancer Morning Tea. The morning saw approx. 130 happy people attend and they were treated to a positively wonderful repast and some unforgettable entertainment. Such a lovely fun time and the end result for Cancer research was a $2530 donation. Congratulations must go to Rhonda (Muller) and her team on a most successful event. Also to be roundly congratulated are all the local businesses who donated vouchers for raffling – it is for such a great cause and so very much appreciated. It was reminiscent of the first half dozen of these functions that Carol Phillips master-minded 14 years ago. Carol’s biggest fund-raiser brought in just over $4000 and all up she raised almost $15,000 over a few years. Looks like it’s happening all over again! How good is that? Most of the painting around the Centre should be completed by the end of May which means that the building certifiers are now able to sign-off on all our buildings and that will be another job-lot of which we’ve taken care. However, still have facias and eaves which need attention. We would like to publicly acknowledge the donation from the Rollingstone Seniors of a Bar Fridge and Electric Jug for “The Station”, aka the Library. So greatly appreciated!! Otherwise, stuff seems to be going smoothly at the Centre - well, let’s hope so, anyway. Chris is back in harness and we’re doing what we need to do to maintain a u-beaut facility and comply with all Government requirements. Please God, it stays that way. Anything for a quiet, productive life.

What is RAITA? ‘Raita’ is an Indian side dish of yoghurt containing chopped cucumber and/or other vegetables, and spices. Try this; it’s very yumm: 1 teasp. Gidday Rollingstone……………..This is Acting Sergeant Darren Haggarty here for another edition of the Coppers Log. April - May have been fairly good months. Our ANZAC day ceremonies this year were again absolutely brilliant with a large turnout for the 100 year anniversary. Once again the Lions, RSL, SES, Rollingstone and Mutarnee State schools and Townsville Council (Sorry in advance if I missed anyone) did an outstanding job to make this a great day to reflect for all. We are very lucky to have dedicated professional people to organise and run these events. I was reflecting back on my Grandparents and the lives that they led the other day. My Grandma Irene “Rene” Haggarty was born in Texas Queensland and was a tough but kind woman.Grandma drove a “flipper blue” type 3 Volkswagen with a bright red leather-look interior. Towards the end of her driving career Grandma was issued with a few traffic tickets (Before anyone says it, not by me, I was too young!). I especially remember the time when Grandma drove around a marked police car which was stopped at a pedestrian crossing and when she was intercepted gave the police officer a piece of her mind for stopping in the middle of the road (By the way yes she did get booked). I think this was the sign it was time to either give up driving or get a stronger prescription for her glasses or maybe it was the time she drove into the service station and heard a loud noise and wondered why the car wouldn’t start. The fact the engine mounts had given way and the engine was sitting on the ground may have been another hint. (Lucky there were less cars on the road back then!!!). When Grandma passed my Grandfather gave me her type 3 Volkswagen and over a few months I hand-sanded it back to metal and had it repainted like new. It looked so good that when grandfather saw it he asked for it back. Well what could I say? The fact he reversed it through his downstairs brick wall some months later brought a tear to my eye (yes Grandfather was ok) and the fact he left it to someone else in his will when he passed away brought another tear to my eye. I must mention some of the characters I have met in Rollingstone. Ray who attends the BP service station for his daily coffee. Ray is a true character and I will miss his enthusiasm for life and some (not all) of his jokes. Bob “The mischievous one” who with the help of one Acting Senior Sergeant GOUGH (I know you were an accomplice GOUGHY) gave me some wipes to clean up any doughnut residue (Now Bob, police officers don’t waste any part of a doughnut). Thinking of doughnuts; when I was conducting foot patrols at Pacific Fair shopping centre at Broadbeach, I was standing outside a doughnut shop talking to the owner when I was blinded by a flash from a camera and observed the culprit running in a westerly direction. I am sure the culprit was training for our next Olympic running team because my attempts to catch the culprit were to no avail (Admittedly I do wear at least 14kgs of equipment so that’s my excuse for not catching him). As yet the photo has not surfaced in cyberspace!!!! It is with a lot of sadness that I must advise you that this will be my last Rolly Rag as I have accepted a promotion and will commence as Sergeant, Officer in charge of Boulia police station as of early June. Leaving this piece of paradise will be very difficult as I have met so many wonderful people and made lifelong friends. I promise I will be back from time to time to say hello and catch up. My position here at Rollingstone has been advertised and I am sure Goughy will find a suitable replacement. Puy will miss the finger nail and toe nail painting sessions with Poppy Lilac, Brooke and friends. I am sure Goughy’s dog chook will miss the sneaky Thai snacks that Puy gives him at our back door. I must thank Goughy and Allison for their help during our stay in Rollingstone, and Jenny and Christine for the great work at the station. There are so many good people here and unfortunately I just won’t be able to mention everyone but I am sure you do know who you are. My 17 months here has flown and as you are reading this I will be patrolling one of the biggest police divisions in Queensland at around 61,000 square kilometres. Please remember the Rollingstone disaster management golf day is on the 14 th June and we need teams of 4 to sign on to play. It was a great day last year and I strongly urge you to attend. I wish everyone well, stay safe and enjoy this wonderful part of the world! Take care, Darren, AKA Daniel Craig (Ok, I know I am still dreaming but I can), AKA McHaggis. Dear Editor Thanks for allowing me to toss this in at the last minute. I couldn’t let the time pass without mentioning a few things that deserve some space. Firstly and by far most importantly, on behalf of Allison and Poppy and myself, I want to offer my sincere condolences to Reg Geritz and his family for the loss of his partner Blondie. We were meant to be at the beach for the ‘rock and roll’ send-off that Blondie had asked for – I wanted to talk about her courage and her unfaltering good spirit, and about his dedication to her… how loving someone is more than just using the words… By the time this Rag is circulated, a few things will have changed. Darren’s family will have moved out of the house next to the police station, Darren himself will be sucking in red dust as it blows in, off the Simpson Desert and the Senior Constable position will have been advertised, interviewed and (with any luck) almost filled. Hopefully Darren will have the experience he’s looking for in Boulia – we wish him all the best for it. I’m sure some your readers will be starting to think the police station at Rollingstone is looking a bit empty. The grand plan is that I’ll be staying at Deeragun as OIC until around the first week of July, staff from Deeragun will be coming up to Rollingstone to man the office on a day to day basis for a few weeks until I get back and I’ll attending to any urgent “after-hours” jobs. All the basics stay the same – the office will be open from 10am to 2.30pm, Monday to Thursday with Miss Christine at the helm, the police car will still be cruising around the back streets and the highway during the day (probably with a few different faces in it) and if you need us, all you need to do is call. Remember… the coppers from down here aren’t used to be waved at as they drive past you - not everyone is as friendly as you lot are. I’ve been gone for while this time, but I’m keen to come back when my job here is done. See you in the next Coppers Log……..Goughy P 11

Council Clippings - Division One Hello to all and how can it be that another month has gone by so quickly?? Half the year is nearly gone!! The old Rollingstone Bridge closure came as a shock to us all in the past month. Council is working towards a way forward with re-opening the bridge for the local community and as this went to print I can't give you a time line or a clear answer to how long it is going to take to sort this out. The community has clearly spoken and council is listening to the wants and needs of the Rollingstone community. I am always happy to meet to discuss and will be up again second Wednesday of the month 9 until 1 pm unless something unforeseen occurs. Please stay safe and warm as winter has arrived and we all go about our business. Derek and I will be cooking at the Saunders Beach Community Hall on the 19th June so come and join us and support another great community in the Northern Beaches. Kind Regards Sue Blom Councillor Division 1 Chair Community & Culture Townsville City Council 0427300364

R.S.L. NEWS Wow! Great pictures of ANZAC Day in the May Rolly Rag. Thank you to Debbie, Kristie, Nicholas, Len and Wendy for submitting photos. Realised I had missed a couple of people to thank as well as the many that were mentioned in the last issue. Nina and Cherrill, from Rollingstone State School, also assisted with programs and certificates, so thank you to them for all of their help, not just this year, but in many previous years as well. Nina would often help me when I was first learning the ropes of this secretarial job! On the day we had a surprise donation from Ray Campbell, of a book his uncle, Gordon Campbell, had collected as a memory of his exploits during WW1. Thank you to Ray and we will look after that treasured book and display on special occasions. It is hard to give away memorable possessions, but I guess there comes a time when you think, I need to pass this on, so that it is not lost and idly discarded later. To all RSL members, please try and make it to the Golf Course on June 14 th for the Disaster Management Golf Day. It is a fun event and helps to maintain the equipment we need during those rare, but inevitable storms we receive in this area. It is fun and you don’t have to be a serious golfer, just turn up and enjoy yourself. The Lions provide a delicious barbecue lunch to satisfy your appetite following the game. On July 9th, RSL members are invited to join with the TPI Association for another fun day of golf. They are visiting Mystic Sands this year, and again it’s a day that is not too serious, with lots of laughs. On a sad note we are losing two members of our RSL. Only from the Mystic Sands area though! Jim has said he would like to remain a member of our Rollingstone RSL, unfortunately Vi had a fall recently and has been hospitalised. Whilst their house was on the market, as they intended to eventually move to town, this hastened the need to sell. Vi and Jim have lived in Mystic Sands for many years and both have made a number of friends. They belonged to different clubs over the years. Vi enjoyed the craft group and the Seniors, whilst Jim was more into fishing, golf and the RSL. We wish Vi a sound recovery and best wishes to both of them in their new setting. Jim was rubbing his hands about no more mowing! Hopefully Nevis and Fossie are on the mend. Nevis was in hospital for a few days and Fossie has not been the best following a fall. I believe Helen and Rick have moved into a care facility at Wulguru. They have their own unit but won’t have gardening issues and their meals are cooked for them. Best wishes to all RSL members who may be unwell at the present time. Whilst thinking of farewells, we need to say goodbye to Darren, our effervescent policeman who has been acting sergeant for the past couple of months. Thank you Darren for your assistance during the past two ANZAC Days and for your advice as to how to conduct the days’ activities. We will miss your bright, cheerful manner in which you approach the public. Best wishes to you and your family for your new posting. A final look back at ANZAC Day. Did you notice our new marquees? Our committee were very impressed when they had constructed them and they certainly proved worthwhile on ANZAC Day. We applied for, and received a grant, from North Queensland District for these marquees and have been very pleased with the acquisition of these as they will enable us to provide shelter during our future commemorative day services. Thank you to North Qld District for the support. We have six new members following ANZAC Day. They are Megan and Ken Jeffree, Annie and Doug McGuire and Rhonda and John Gurd. John’s father served in WW2, and Mick and I looked into his history whilst at Kanchanaburi last year. Australian ex-service personnel, who now live in Thailand, have established a centre for people to seek information about those who served in WW2. On the off chance I put in my uncles name and found information about his service, which I did not know about. An interesting and informative place to visit if you are looking for information on long lost relatives. There I go, digressing again! However, a warm welcome to Megan, Ken, Annie, Doug, Rhonda and John. Finally, our Friday nights are going well at the golf club. The Goose Club jackpot is now over $500 and our meat tray raffles sell rather quickly. We also have a $30 jackpot or bottle of spirits raffle when there are a number of patrons at the club. C1 and C2 are doing a great job with the food, so why not give yourself a night off of cooking as well as giving yourself a chance to win a prize. Take care. Enjoy our wonderful weather and lifestyle……...Cheers, Rhonda.

ANZAC CEREMONY AT BLUEWATER STATE SCHOOL On Friday 24 April, I was very pleased to attend the ANZAC ceremony at Bluewater State School. Congratulations to the school leaders who led the ceremony and thanks to the ex-servicemen who attended and shared their stories with the students. I always enjoy visiting Bluewater State School. The students put a lot of effort into their ANZAC ceremony for this year’s 100 th anniversary, which was also well attended by lots of parents and family members from the local community. Lest We Forget. ROLLINGSTONE SENIORS BIGGEST MORNING TEA On Friday 8 May, I attended the Rollingstone Seniors Biggest Morning Tea. This was a very interesting event put on by a very active group of seniors. They welcomed visitors from south to Bluewater and Toolakea and north to Ingham and Forrest Beach. There was a very tasty morning tea and a great fashion parade from the Op Shop. If you are heading out to the Rollingstone Hall and RTC, take a look at the excellent little library that’s been established in the old Rollingstone Railway Station building. JUST IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING… The Abbott Government handed down its 2015-16 budget recently. It’s been received more positively by most people compared to last year. However, the Labor Government in Queensland have claimed it includes cuts to health and education. In case you were wondering, this isn’t true (and some of you won’t be surprised!). In fact, in relation to education, total Commonwealth Government funding to ALL schools across Queensland will increase this year and will actually increase by $875.7 million from 2014–15 to 2018–19, a total of 28.8% increase over this period. In the area of health, funding from the Commonwealth Government to Queensland will actually increase by 5.3 per cent this coming financial year to $3.2 billion and will continue to increase each year between 3 and 8 per cent to 2018-19, to $3.8 billion.

REHABILITATE or EUTHANIZE? There is a side to wildlife caring which is unfortunately neccessary but not welcomed. We do our utmost to save every animal that we come into contact with but there are a lot of times when this is not possible. In these cases we have to weigh up the options and decide the best outcome for the animal. For example: we check an animal that has been hit by a car and is lying on the roadside. Pacify and calm the animal is the first thing. Normally they are in shock so they can appear docile. Check for injuries and determine to what extent are they able to be treated. If the decision has been made that the animal can not be saved (and this is not taken lightly) then euthanasia is the only option. We do not prolong the animals pain and suffering, a lot of time they have already gone into shock and this affects animals differently. To euthanize, the person has to have done an extensive course and must be licensed and qualified through Queensland Health, Poison and Drug Regulation to undertake this job or to be a veternarian. Because the number of persons allowed to hold this license is restricted, there are only 6 in the Townsville area! We are very fortunate to have one out here in the Rollingstone district, but often there are times when we need to call on others depending on the circumstances. This license is ONLY for wildlife. If we can not handle the animal it then becomes neccessary to be able to sedate them using a special dart gun. There is only 1 dart gun available for Townsville area and surroundings. These darts are extremely expensive so it is never used unless there is no other option. We cannot just chase an animal until it is exhausted as this in turn causes myopithy and causes them to die through it. When an animal is euthanized it is done with compassion and always by HAND. Once an animal is euthanized it cannot be buried and must be cremated. This means that the volunteer wildlife person must also organize to take the deceased animal to the crematorium (which is quite a journey into town).

Note from editor: PLEASE REMEMBER our wildlife carers who do such an incredible job are doing this work at their own expense . From feeding and medicating the animals around the clock, being called out at all times, driving to help and driving into town for further issues. If anyone would like to HELP please discuss this with one of the above listed wildlife carers for there are many ways we can do a little bit towards helping!!! From blankets, to a cash donation ‌..every little bit REALLY helps !!!!!

MYSTIC SANDS GOLF CLUB

Hello Golfers, Well here we are nearly the middle of the year and the golf is going great guns. The ladies count is now up to 16 members and some promising players among them. There has been a lot happening over the last month, with the men sending 2 teams away to play Pennants. Our B Grade pulled off a good win and the C Grade just missing out by half a point.Well done to both teams for such a small club getting 2 teams together is a feat in itself. We had a change of greenkeepers in May with Brett Barsby going to another club, good luck Brett with your new endeavour. Funnily enough as one door closed another opened and in walked another greenkeeper with plenty of experience. It seems he has hit the ground running - good man - so if you see him around the course his name is Greg. Please give him a wave and say hello. We lost a lovely lady a couple of weeks ago with the passing of Debbie Gertz, our thoughts are with you Reg on your sad loss. Golf Results as follows: Monthly Medal Results Mens Div 1 Winner Chris Farlow with 66 swab that man terrific stuff Chris. R/U Denis Cleaver with 69 well done you cheeky little cabbie Mens Div 2 Winner Brian Wilson with 69 good on you Brian R/U Phil Small with 72 maybe next time Phil keep hammering away Mens Div 3 Winner Paul Cahill with70 well done Paul R/U Tony Griffiths with 76 did you pop off to sleep Tony Ladies Results Div 1 Winner Gabbie Downwood with 72 this young lady is going to be A Grade in the not to distant future well done! Ladies Winners were Di Stephan and Megan Jeffree with 48 Di is one of our senior ladies and Megan is another new lady with better scores to come and another B Grader on the way. Diane gave Meg a bit of guidance and they came home with the bacon. Well done girls R/U Maree King and Debbie Bolton with 44 again. Another senior lady guiding a new lady to a very good score on the day well done to these two ladies as well. A little bit of Vets News. Our men and women went on their northern jaunt to Kurramine to play golf and get up to some nonsense. Everyone had a ball and some golf even got played in between having to dress up and have a few cordials. I am led to believe that some newcomers had a great time, see I told you Pat and Pete its fun. That's all for now……..Stay safe and look after one and other…….Cheers Maree K.

MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB Our highlight for May would have to be Mothers Day where we had 20 players enjoying a great morning’s bowls followed by a magnificent luncheon at the Resort. The line dancing contingent within our bowling club particularly enjoyed the musical entertainment throughout the afternoon which all added up to a great day out. As mentioned in the last Rag, we have given Friday night bowls a trial over the last two weeks. Unfortunately this was not successful due to limited numbers and the fact that the current lighting is totally inadequate. We will investigate the option of hiring in light banks, say once per month, where we will try to attract a full green full of players (which will definitely not be on a Friday). Further details in next Rag. As the local Disaster Management charity day is being held at the Resort on Sunday June 14 th, we will be incorporating our normal Sunday morning barefoot bowls into this event. For all those locals who dont want to play golf, why not come along and join in playing bowls with all proceeds going into the relief fund. We need everyone present by 9.00am to enable a 9.30am start. Please remember that Barefoot Bowls is on every Sunday morning at 9.00am (cost is only $7) and we finish by midday. As usual, please direct any enquiries to Phil Small on 0418 779 292…………...Thanks. P 20

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc Here we are – winter in Rollingstone – and welcome to all of our Southern Visitors. We trust you are not finding it “too cold” for you as you visit, and hopefully spend some time in our beautiful part of Paradise. If you are here for an extended period of time, why not get involved in our community as there are many things to do to keep you entertained. Your local Lions Club has again been active in the past month supporting our local and wider community. Some of the highlights have been: Supporting the CHILDREN’S TUMOUR FOUNDATION “NEUROFIBROMATOSIS “(NF) WALK by providing a sausage sizzle fundraiser at The Strand. Prior to that we had a very interesting presentation at our last Lions Dinner Meeting by Mystic Sands resident KristieWilliams and her committee, with 5 of their children including our own Leo Club member Jye Williams doing an impressive “topless parade” to show us the extent of the tumours these young people have to live with on a daily basis. We sincerely hope that their fund raising activities will go a long way to raising awareness of this insidious disease, as well as raising funds for research to help find a cure.  Also on that same day we supported the Defence Community Organisation (DCO) with a barbecue at Jezzine Barracks as part of their Family Fun afternoon. There are several Defence Families living in our community and our contribution on the day certainly ensured a successful outing for all the kiddies – many of them with either Mum or Dad currently serving our country overseas  We have also provided “Lions Muscle” with vehicles and trailers to help Volunteers North Queensland (VNQ) move into new expanded premises in Vincent. We also have assisted several other local families with little furniture removal jobs.  On-going support to our local Junior Leos with their Rolly Creek clean-up, and their Garden Project at the school.  Preparing for the annual Rollingstone Pineapple Festival which this year will be held on the 2nd Saturday (12th)of September. Please place this date in your calendar NOW as you certainly won’t want to miss this Premier Event. The first meeting of the committee under this year’s chairman Lion John Holliday has been held, with some new changes this year to enhance the experience for all of our patrons. Want to be a part of this committee and help stage this year’s event – please give John a call. One of the things I enjoy about living in Rollingstone is the great sense of community spirit that exists here, and a big part of that is being able to support our local business houses whenever possible. We know that the temporary closure of the old bridge is an inconvenience, but please don’t forget that our local General Store still needs our support during this time. Rossco and Olga have been wonderful supporters of this community over the entire time they have been here – helping many local individuals and organisations in ways that the general population are not ever aware of – so please continue to go that little extra distance to support them now. Talking of local support, many of us have either been on board “ROSIE” or seen her in action as part of the parade and entertainment of our annual Pineapple Festival. “ROSIE” is the Leisure Accessible vessel that takes Seniors and people with a disability on excursions on the calmer waterways here at Rollingstone and in the greater Townsville area. This is a wonderful service provided by “Skipper” Ken Turner and his “Deckie” Joy, and has brought much pleasure to many people over the 15 years she has been in service. The vessel is now on it’s 3rd set of motors and is performing well, however her trailer is now in urgent need of replacement. Cost is $10,945, with Lions asked to lead a fund-raising exercise to cover cost of replacement. Your local Lions Club will be providing some financial support but we can’t do it all by ourselves, and we are seeking assistance from other community clubs and local residents who would like to assist. Please contact me if you would like to make a financial contribution to this very worthy cause. Shirley and I have just returned from our Annual National Lions convention in Newcastle, where we were inspired by some wonderful guest speakers and their presentations to conventioneers. Last year Lions nationally partnered with Beyond Blue to provide much needed awareness and counselling services to those in need within our communities, and I am pleased to advise that we have now expanded this service to also include the Black Dog Institute. Each year we have supported the local Black Dog Chapter by catering for their breakfast and lunch for their local Charity Motor Bike ride – donating over $1,000 this year to provide much needed support to the local Lifeline Counselling Service. To all of those in our community, if you need some help or support your local Lions are only a phone call away. Our motto internationally is “We Serve”, and if you would like a fulfilling change in your life, please consider joining our Rollingstone Lions Club so that you too can experience the joy that comes from being able to support those who need it most. We are a funloving bunch, why not come and join us at our Lions Den at the Community Centre for our monthly “Happy Hour” from 5.00PM to 7.00PM on the first Saturday each month. And to any visiting Lions in our area, we would love to see you too at our Business or Dinner meetings (2nd & 4th Tuesdays from 6.30PM). Till next month, keep well – and please - support your local community where you can. John Muller – President Mob 0407 114687

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. Yes my three readers, I am back! Well, actually, we are both back from our trip south which was good but it is always wonderful to arrive home to paradise again. I wish to thank my dear wife Di aka The Handbrake for her sterling job on telling me where to go, what to avoid, that a semi had just left the next town 147 km up the road so be sure to give it a wide berth when it passes as well as her excellent driving tips for the whole 7,500km journey. You couldn’t leave home without them could you. Christine Ruston stood in for me as Club Secretary and Scribe during my absence and has done a great job for which I thank her whole heartedly. Me thinks we may have found a new Scribe perhaps? We welcome new Club Member Stephen McAlister into our happy band and wish him a bright and happy time in his new club. Speaking of memberships, it is that time of the year again members (comes around fast doesn’t it) when membership fees will soon be due. Please get in early with your renewal applications and avoid the rush. Family Membership remains at $50.00 and Single Membership is $30.00. What a bargain. I am finding it difficult to believe that not one member, not a single sole has stuffed up enough to win the Tale of Woe award during the past couple of months. If I don’t get some good stories soon I will just have to invent some and as I have said previously, don’t let any resemblance of the truth get in the way of a good yarn. The next major item on our Social Calendar is a combined End of Month BBQ, a Closed Club Fishing Competition and Family Weekend Away at Cardwell during the weekend of Friday 26 June until Sunday 28 June. Our last trip away to Lucinda in November last year was a great success (pity about the fishing) so mark this up on your fridge door. All our members have been given the details by E-Mail or post but please ensure you book your accommodation at The Kookaburra Caravan Park now. If you don’t wish to fish or enter the fishing competition then just come along for a relaxing weekend. Please, if you are attending, put your name on the notice at The Landing for catering purposes otherwise you may not get any meals. Note also please that this is a closed club outing so members only, no friends or visitors. We have had a recent change within the Committee with Rebecca Hutchinson standing down as our Markets Coordinator. Over the past 12 months or so Rebecca has done an outstanding job working tirelessly co-ordinating the markets, getting new stall holders and generally ensuring that things ran smoothly on the day. We know her biggest disappointment has been the lack of a fruit/veg. stall holder during the summer months. However, in her efforts to entice one Rebecca has driven up and down the coast and inland following leads to no avail despite her pleading and attempts at bribery. The Committee and all members wish to thank her for her great work but, we will still have her happy smiling face around as she has agreed to remain on the Committee as a General Committee Member. Mr. Dan Dale of Mon’s Tasty Thai Food has stepped in to fill the big boots vacated by Rebecca. We wish him every success. Drop in at their food van for a yarn or to give Dan any ideas you may have about the markets. It is again time to reiterate the simple rules in relation to the use of the pontoon behind The Landing. First…..Craft have right of way so if you are fishing illegally off the pontoon, show some courtesy and wind in your line when a boat approaches. Second…..There is a bin on the pontoon for rubbish for those too bone lazy to walk to the nearby council bins. Do not put, fish guts etc in the bin on the pontoon, in fact, take it home with you. If the bin is full do not leave your rubbish on top of or beside the bin as it will only end up in the water, a bit of common sense please. Third…..The pontoon is not there to be used as a wharf, jetty or marina. Load/unload your passengers and gear and move on. Sadly, following an incident late Saturday afternoon on 16 May we have to put into print the obvious and that is do not light a fire on the pontoon! We don’t care if the midgies were annoying you mate, you should not have been fishing from the pontoon in the first place. Our Mothers Day function was a great success thanks to Rebecca who put it all together and our own (we think they are anyway) Charlie’s Angels who provided the foot tapping sing along music. One particular happy chap on the day was Richard Pickering who won the one hour massage and other BNB beauty products. We believe he couldn’t wait for the massage and was beside himself with excitement. We thank everyone who supported the raffle and the very kind sponsors who donated the prizes. The Stinger Net was removed on Friday 15 May and will be returned from Cairns after maintenance during November to be reinstated for the next Stinger season. In the meantime, Dickie (I only look after the stinger net) Charleston now has a lot of time on his hands. You have been alerted! Our end of month BBQ held on 24 April was another success with many members and visitors turning up to feast on fine fare belted into submission on the hot plate by the best couple of bait layers we could find who just happened to be wandering past at the time. Thanks to all involved who made the night the success it was. There is no Dicky’s Fishing News item this month as Dickie said the fishing and crabbing in the whole area has been so good the past month you could almost catch something in your bathtub so you don’t need him to advise you where to go. Don’t worry, I will trick him into a few lines for the next issue. Do not forget the first NRL State of Origin game night at The Landing on Wednesday 27 May. We will have the big screen TV, nibbles and a few snags etc so come along and cheer QLD or NSW to a great win. Until next month,……………...Ninger P 24

Paluma In the Clouds Bits & Pieces It has been a very quiet month in Paluma, largely because we had so many people away. Hylands were in Burketown, Bishops in New Zealand, Michael Drew was in Ireland, Don Battersby, off touring and goodness knows who else. Cliff & Denise Urquhart have moved to Townsville where they have secured accommodation suitable for Denise’s wheelchair. Needless to say there was only minimal rain although some dull days gave the vegetation a little respite from the sun. Ergon were in the village for a second time replacing poles and it seems that they have completed the job. The attendance at the history display has picked up a little with a trickle of out of town visitors appearing on Tuesdays. Apart from that there is singularly little to report this month. Market The next Markets will be on the Sunday of the Queens Birthday Weekend - 7th June - and as a few of our regulars are unavailable we would welcome any new stallholders. Contact Lynn on 47737675 [leave a message if she is out ] or try 4770 8681 [best in the evenings, as we do not hear it when out on the property away from the house]. Mobiles do not work well in Paluma ! Cost of a table is only $5.00.

Congratulations to the Mothers Day winners: Andy Evans, Don Cumming, Jeremy & Brittany. Thank You to all those wonderful people who supported the raffle and also to those who helped to sell tickets. Thank you to Kate - United Chemist NorthShore, Dave & Robyn Allen - East Ingham Hotel for your kind support/donation with the raffle. We are extremely grateful for your support. A BIG Happy 18th Birthday to Amber Harrison & Dean Allen for the month of May!!! Happy Birthday to Sherree Eberle, Eddie White, Noel Gallagher, Robyn Allen, myself and any one else who is lucky enough to be have a birthday in June. Celebration time for us all !! Congratulations to Marcus Bell. Marcus has been selected to represent The Townsville Brolgas Rugby Union U12’s in the country carnival in Emerald over the June Long weekend. It has been a speedy progression in his Rugby Union career as he is currently only in his second year of playing the sport with the Western Suburbs Dragons. A lot of thanks must go to Mr Grant Whiteford, one of Marcus’ teachers at the Bluewater State School. Mr Whiteford has encouraged Marcus to continue with the sport outside school hours and believes that Marcus can achieve greatly in this sport. The Bluewater State School won the Junior inter-school carnival known as the Development Cup in 2014 and Marcus and the rest of the team are looking at defending their title at the event this year prior to Marcus travelling to Emerald. All the best in the carnival Marcus. the Toomulla Beach Community Association committee were proud to hand over a cheque to Marcus for $308 to help towards the cost of travel expenses & accommodation. This was the proceeds from our Mothers Day Raffle last month. I am sure by now that everyone has seen the Aluminium Can Collection Box (bright yellow frames) on Herald Street. The cans are collected religiously every Sunday by the dedicated men, Warren Butterworth & Barry Jones, who then off sell them, with all proceeds going to the Ravenshoe Heritage Steam Railway. I see this as a very worthwhile cause, which will allow the train to continue to operate for the people now, and future generations to come. So……… for some very exciting news……. the TBCA committee met with Council & Natural Resources this week……. it was one of the most positive, constructive meetings we have had since starting with the campaign to gain land for the purpose of building a Community Centre. The representatives that were present for both departments, discussed several issues, but overall, expressed to us, to keep a positive outlook with our plans. The possibility of securing a piece of land in Toomulla, is certainly starting to look like it could become a reality over the next few months. We all have our fingers & toes crossed. Feel free to talk to myself or any committee member for further information. I know there are some people out there that do not agree that we should have a Community Centre but I suppose people’s opinions can be like batteries - they all have a positive & negative side !!! Until next month…………..Cheers………. Rhonda.

Natures Notes - Roy Mackay Wonders never cease. As I told you in the April issue of the Rag it was a new experience to me to see a mass of Brush Turkeys roosting for the night on pine trees above Little Crystal Creek Bridge. Well, last Monday evening coming home to Paluma, Colwyn Campbell and I stopped to see the roost again. Surprise, surprise, the roost was full of White Cockatoos and no Brush Turkeys at all. The Venns of Paluma called for me to look at a young Cuckoo in their garden and try to identify it. It would be virtually impossible to determine which species it was from conventional bird identification books because so many young birds of closely related species look the same. So I resorted to the specialist HANDZAB (Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds) volumes which give the best descriptions of our birds than any other. Volume 4 showed the young plumage of closely related species so I was able to determine that our bird a young Pallid Cuckoo and only slightly different from the Oriental Cuckoo.

Where are the tortoises around Rollingstone/Balgal? They are in the freshwater creeks and ponds and in the sea and unless the light is right all you will see is its nose sticking above the surface while it takes some air into its lungs. If you see one in your local freshwater you may be able to encourage more to come by occasionally spreading breadcrumbs on the water. The most common species there is either Cann's Snake-necked Turtle (Chelodina canni) or the Sawshelled Turtle (Wollumbinia latisternum). There is no rigid rule as to whether you should call them turtles or tortoises. Generally, if it lives in water, fresh or salt, it is a turtle. If it lives on land it is a tortoise. There are no native tortoises in Australia. In the sea you have six species of turtles, the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) being the most common……………...Roy Mackay.

PLAYGROUP Fun Crafting I hope everyone has enjoyed the break and had a wonderful Easter. My family and I did. We went away to Rollingstone for Easter. This term we will be having some fun just crafting, looking at some fun painting activities and making some play dough with a twist. We will be heading back to school, the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at Bluewater State School. The Bunnings North Community Involvement Team have jumped on board again this year and we will be crafting with them in store and at our centres. We have Launchzone included again and to make it easier for everyone to remember I have made scheduled the last Wednesday of every month. We will also be heading on an Excursion this term so put your thinking caps on and come up with something fun for the groups to do. Check your programs and our Facebook page to keep up to date with all the exciting things that we will be doing this term. We are always open to suggestions, so if you have any ideas come and see myself or drop your ideas in the suggestion box in the main reception area. Memberships for 2015 are due now, Please fill in a new membership form and media consent form and return it to me A.S.A.P. Membership is still $ 20 a year and only $3 a session for a family. Let’s go have some fun…………….Till Next time keep playing ………………...Nicole P 27
