Volunteers Wanted:
Bus Cleaner; 1 day a week to clean both buses inside and out. All products and equipment provided. Book Enthusiasts: The main role of in the library is to put the books away after they have been returned and stamp the newest donations - sorting as you go into keepers, double ups and give aways. Bus Divers: We have had a good response to the call for bus drivers but will always like to have a few more ready to step in. All our regular bus drivers are going on holidays (I keep saying that is not allowed but they’re not listening). Thank you to the gents who have put their hand up. Very much appreciated. These positions would suit Centrelink recipients with a volunteering obligation. Please call Chris on 47707855 to register your interest. Please do not forget to come to the Centre on 28 May to hear Rosa Christian’s journey to becoming a writer at a later stage of life. Rosa is graciously hosting a “Get to Know the Author Session” from 7pm. Bar and snacks will be available on the night. Following this Rosa Christian is presenting a workshop on Never too Old, Never too Late - Writing for Pleasure and Profit on Saturday 29 May starting 9am. Places are filling fast. Gentle reminder that Bingo is held the second Saturday of each month. Bingo is run by the Seniors expressly to provide enjoyment for locals. Please make it a date to come along and support this activity. An Aged Care Information Session is being organised for Wednesday 8 June 12.30pm by a local who is hoping to educate the Community to what is available within the Aged Care Services. This session is open to everyone especially those with questions regarding Aged Care Services, Adult Guardianship, Maintenance Assistance, and those in a caring role or concerned family and friends. Representatives from these services will be in attendance and it is your chance to ask the hard questions without the long waits on the phone – and actually speak to a “real” person. Then to follow this Session up – on Thursday 10 June from 9am to 4pm the Centrelink Mobile Office will be parked at the Community Centre Carpark. Please make the most of this

opportunity – no travelling to see a Centrelink representative. They are here to help in any way they possibly can. Another opportunity to ask those questions you may have been reluctant to do due to time on phones or length of travel. They have come to us. As a Community we wish to welcome you to our strip of the Qld Coast. A Welcoming Morning Tea is being organised for those new to the Community, whether it be a couple of years ago or ever-so recent. Welcome and please come along and make yourselves known. We have some pretty good cooks up this way and do a mean cup of tea/coffee and scones, cream and jam – we dare you to come and find out. See you Saturday 19 June 9-11am. In this month’s Rolly Rag a quarter page invitation has been inserted. Please if you are aware of new neighbours, we ask you to put the invitation into their letter box and perhaps and only if you want to include your contact details and/or and invitation to come along with the new neighbour. Children are more than welcome and can either join their parents/guardians in the morning tea or enjoy a “Lego” session in the Lions Den. Please book in only for catering purposes. The Bubbles and Brushes night was once again a great night to participate. There is certainly hidden talent in the community, and I am so totally amazed that when people sit down with the same task to do, the variations must be really appreciated. There were just under 25 people turn up to the Resilience Planning meeting held on 8 May from our service providers to some of the newest members of the community. Thank you to everyone who gave their time for this meeting and this includes Alicia and Brittany our gracious hosts. Alicia has provided a brief rundown on the morning in this newsletter. A hearty shout out to all our volunteers for being your generously wonderful selves and to our garden gnomes who worked so tirelessly pruning, weeding and mulching.……………………………………. Thank you.to the moon and back!!!!! Happy Qld Day on 6 June. Look after yourself……………………you are the only one who can. Cheers - Chris

Rollingstone Community Takes Action to Build Resilience Recently, members of the Rollingstone community attended a Council Emergency Management workshop to learn more about disasters, and how to create a community response plan. The Rollingstone community response plan will detail the strengths and capacity of the community to mitigate, respond to and recover from disasters. Resilience is defined as the ability of a community to withstand a shock and adapt to change. Building resilience at a community level is key to preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters. 21 locals attended, including representatives from Queensland Police Service, SES, Rollingstone and District Lions Club (Inc), and the Rollingstone and District Community Association. Also in attendance was Emma Rush, from the National Recovery and Resilience Agency.
Rollingstone Rag, June 2021
The invaluable input from attendees will be utilised to form a community response plan, which will be open to community consultation. The plan will then be finalised and promoted to the Rollingstone community. For more information, or to get involved, please contact Alicia Palmer or Brittany Saunders: Alicia.palmer@townsville.qld.gov.au; Brittany.saunders@townsville.qld.gov.au.

NEWS
No doubt there are others and probably even worse off, • but we’ve not had too many reports of those not doing it too well this past month. We do know that John Gurd had a leg removed (so brave, John); that Angie Barr (one of our Op Shop Manageresses) has a broken ankle; and that Margie Hammelswang is just not keeping so well; anymore is Jan Holliday. Kerrie Cochrane has broken a toe and Tony Cochrane is in hospital having a • barrage of testing. We send our affection and best wishes to each of them for a quick recovery. •
We’ve been informed that a fully-fledged Severe Weather Evacuation Point we will never • be. Evacuation Shelters are purpose-built, specially designed and must meet stringent safety requirements and we certainly are not that. However, we can “do stuff” for our community after a weather event and we are very wellequipped to provide those amenities and facilities. Fortunately, we’ve not been called upon to do so yet, and hopefully that won’t happen, but should it ever occur, with the Lions next door and what we have to offer, we should be able to do a good job!
•
We’re starting a Building Fund in an effort to put together enough funding to build a new and bigger Op Shop. Please see Page 9 of this edition.
•
Assistant Treasurer—anyone interested in volunteering as the Association’s Assistant Treasurer? More information contact Chris on 47707855
•
Australia Day Honour Board has been shifted to the Hall verandah; and the “Armidale” Railway sign has replaced it beside the railway display.
•
Thanks to Trish Cronin and TCC the Historical Sign and the Pace Family sign at the Community Centre are being updated and upgraded.
•
All toilets in the Big Hall and RTC have been checked and attended to if required. We’re in the throes of having all the air-cons cleaned/serviced so that should just about bring our house-keeping up to date.
•
We’ll also be making a concerted effort during June to sell the old Bus. It’s no longer paying for itself, so we must move it on.
Rollingstone Rag, June 2021
The 2 local State Primary Schools (Mutarnee and Rollingstone) are having their Sports Carnival on Pace Park this year. That’s so exciting for us. We’ve been hoping this would happen one day – and here it is! It’s happening soon and it should be a bi-i-i-g day!! We’re looking to set-up a Trauma Support Group. What are your thoughts? Would there be enough interest to warrant it? Please let us know your thoughts. We took our Bus Trip to the markets during May. Numbers were extremely disappointing for what seemed initially like a good idea particularly after we were knocked down by bookings………and then cancellations. Oh, well, such is life! Anyhow, those who went had a great day. We all bought lots of goodies and there was much chatter and laughter on the Bus and at lunch (at the Cowboys Club). Also, we had just the very BEST driver in Bob Jewell and he had his trusty T/A, Theresa, with him and they were wonderfully kind and helpful. A great day all round and now we’re looking at going to the Markets at Mundingburra State School and also the Marian School sometime during the cooler weather. Well, I sorta think that’s about us for this month. Enjoy the cooler weather!

A Treasury-led Taskforce is consulting with industry and community representatives, as well as other interested stakeholders, to develop a final design for the reinsurance pool. Fishing Report: G’day Folks. Well we have been blessed with some good fishing weather of late and good reports from creeks in the Taylors Beach area down to the Paluma Shoals, also the inner Shoals producing excellent Grunter, Sweetlip and the odd coral trout being landed, especially just off Crystal Creek entrance Shoals and the Olera Creek Shoals. Both creeks producing good crab catches whilst luring for Mangrove Jack while waiting for pots to fill up and protecting them against the share farmers if you leave them overnight they will have been checked on your behalf or stolen. The winter species are starting to arrive with the odd report of whiting and winter bream in the creek openings, with yabbies, mantis prawns and strips of squid being the best bait. Creek and early morning beach, and Inner Shoals will be the best time due to a SE flow arriving making the weather 15 to 25 kts over the next few
weeks not good for boating after 10 am. Only a few reports from the Islands with good catches of Trout around Havannah, Fly and Esk Islands, also good GT catches on floating pilchards and no reports from divers and snorkellers. The annual whale migration is under way with an early report out from Townsville so they will not be far away. Every year now with the increase in population there is the odd interaction with these beautiful animals, especially at night, so please be aware and travel safely . Well that’s it for this month, and remember to let someone know where you are proceeding to and when you will be returning or better still let Townsville or Ingham coast guards know. You can leave your out of date EPIRBS and Flares at the Landing for safe disposal. Dickie

How quickly these months are passing! The winter Solstice is approaching and the days are now markedly shorter. After a few wintry days early in May there was a brief respite with cold nights followed by balmy days but now the cooler weather is taking over and night time temperatures have been getting pretty close to freezing. It is time for parties around a fire pit and a chance to observe the night sky clear of cloud. The stars and planets sparkle incandescently against the black backdrop of the sky. Has anyone managed to see the International Space Station as it orbits around us? Cloud obscured the view on the few occasions I had hoped to see it. In the village, Camellias are still blooming; Gordonias have laid carpets of fried eggs; the native trees planted around the hall and picnic area on the Village Green are thriving, and in several gardens, Maple trees are aflame with Autumn colouring, their crowns standing out from the green foliage of neighbouring trees. Meanwhile, the brush turkeys are up to their habitual destructive ways, ravaging gardens and eating every herb, vegetable or fruit they can steal. The AGM of the PDCA was held on 24th April with the elected executive remaining unchanged: President: Jamie Oliver, Vice President: Sarah Swan, Committee member: Lynn Hyland, Treasurer: Wilfred Karnoll. The position of Secretary remains to be filled. 30th April saw a very productive meeting of community members with Margie Ryder. Various local issues were discussed including the laying of a hard-stand outside the Community Hall parking area which now becomes a boggy patch in wet weather. Another issue raised was the possibility of having a board-walk and viewing platform constructed around the weir.

Table Tennis and other games will be played on Saturday afternoon, 29th May from 4.00 pm, again to be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. The Paluma Push will be held again in late July and already prospective participants are cycling up the Range Road on weekends, testing their stamina (and their bike’s) in readiness for this popular event. More details in July Rollingstone Rag. The highlight, social event of the year will be a dinner party on 12th June, to celebrate the 90th birthday of Les Hyland, Paluma’s oldest resident. Les, many of you will recall, was your Paluma in the Clouds correspondent from 2010 to 2018. He is a remarkable man: coming to Paluma in 1986 with his wife, Lynn, he immediately became actively involved (and still is) with all manner of community affairs as well as the Rural Fire Brigade and SES. Les can be seen in all roles, from officiating at the bar on all social occasions, to operating the communications at events such as the Paluma Push or a rescue operation. Les is Paluma’s national treasure. The very popular Bush Dance, held every June (apart from last year) will again be held on Saturday, 26th June, at 7.30 pm. Entry is $15 for adults, $10 for children and $39 for a family. For enquiries, please contact Daphne on 4773 3695. The following day, 27th June, Paluma Markets will be held, from 9.00 am to 1.00pm. ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi Community The weather is cooling down so the students are out and about in the school yard. In Science we are studying living things so the students have toiled hard and we now have an awesome vegetable patch. To their credit they have done all the labour from setting up garden pods, shovelling dirt, planting and daily gardening. We are hoping to have a few cooking classes once the vegetables are ready. I don’t think they will be calling on my help for that part! We have just finished our cross country and selected students will compete in Townsville this term. Athletics is now the focus. Shotput, long jump, high jump, sprints and all those fun ball games. This year we will be holding our athletics at the Community Centre on Thursday 24th June. The students will be on centre stage competing in their respective events. As part of the day, we also have plenty of fun activities for Under 8’s, students, siblings and even adults. The P&C will be cooking some yummy food so please come down for some live sports action and some fun. Our wonderful P&C continue to work hard fundraising to support the cost of our school camps, excursions and activities. This year we are heading to the Apex camp at Magnetic Island. To assist their fundraising efforts for our students, please support their pie drive Andrew Stallman Principal Rollingstone State School

Step forward towards fairer insurance Relief is on the way for North Queenslanders seeking cheaper insurance premiums, following a $10 billion reinsurance pool announced by the Federal government.
Coalition Government is serious about this, it should be Implemented before the election, not after.
Relentless lobbying by people like Kennedy MP Bob Katter and the Member for Dawson George Christensen have helped secure this relief. This was a key priority for Katter's Australian Party during the last State Election when we engaged closely with the strata sector which has been most impacted by sky-rocketing costs in the last few years.
I’m always concerned when I hear a government is working closely with the insurance or banking industries because there’s always a chance that they could railroad this proposal. Insurers seem to care little about bringing insurance prices down for North Queenslanders as their main focus is profit for their shareholders.
We will, however, reserve full judgement on the Federal Government's plan until further details are received.
The State Government should not be let off the hook either when it comes to insurance and I will continue to call for the abolishment of stamp duty on insurance policies.
It is disappointing that the start date for this reinsurance pool will not be until July 2022, meaning North Queenslanders will have to endure another cyclone season before there is any reduction in the cost of premiums to those affected. I am reassured that the Federal crossbench is there to make sure this isn’t a PR stunt to pacify North Queenslanders coming into the Federal election. If the
One thing’s for sure, the KAP will be there to ensure whomever comprises the next Federal government will be held to account on making sure the reinsurance pool is delivered, whether that be Liberal or Labor. Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook
ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LEO CLUB Hello again Rollingstone and District, and isn’t this a wonderful time of the year to live in North Queensland? Wonderful too that at the end of May our Leos supported the Rollingstone And District Lions Club in their local Doorknock to support the Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal.
Earlier in May. Lion John and I attended the annual Lions National Convention in Canberra, and the highlight for us was the presentation on stage of the Annual Leo of The Year Competition. State winners from across Australia were assessed on their community service, leadership and contribution to Leos as well as their communication skills and personal presentation. Their passion and commitment to the community service they provide in their local areas was most evident, as was their youthful enthusiasm and energy. All are members of their local club – just like our local Leos are proud members of the Rollingstone And District Leos Club.
Want to do something different and join in the fun with our Rolly Leos? Then talk to Leo President Morgan, any It is a good feeling knowing that by donating a little bit of of the Leos, or contact one of our Leo Advisors:our own personal time and energy to help collect much needed funds can help make such a big difference in Travis Johnson: Mob 0439 540552 helping to continue the great work the Salvo’s do in Shirley Muller: Mob 0407 114687 supporting the Homeless and also maintaining their Drug Leos – Try it, and Alcoholic Rehabilitation programs.
