Around the Home……… 10 Must-know Handy Household Tips Bananarama Pull bananas apart before displaying them in your fruit bow. If you leave them connected at the stem, they'll ripen faster and go brown quicker. Who Knew?! Flexible vacuum To suck up hard-to-reach gunk under your fridge, or behind a bookshelf, insert an empty paper towel roll into the end of your vacuum cleaner and bend, or flatten it so squeeze into these difficult spots. Buying capsicum We're not sure why, but a capsicum with three bumps on the bottom is sweeter than one with four. Oh, but four bumps makes for a crunchier, firmer capsicum, so you should weigh up crunch vs. sweet when picking out your pepper! Fend off weeds Instead of tossing your daily rag into the recycling bin, use the newspaper as mulch and deter noxious weeds. Simply wet the sheets and put the layers around your plants and garden beds, covering the soil as you go. The weeds won't get through the wet newspaper layers. So Cheesy Wrap cheese chunks in aluminium foil and store in the fridge to keep your cheddar fresher for longer and to keep mould out.
Mozzies be gone! If you have the kind of blood that attracts mosquitoes like a moth to a flame, then listen up. To keep the pesky blood suckers at bay, place a fabric softener dryer sheet in your pocket. Mosquitoes are repelled by the scent and you'll smell like a summer breeze all night! Crispy leftover pizza To reheat a pizza so that the base is out-of-the-oven crisp, heat your left over slices in a fry pan on low-medium heat on the stove until warm and wave goodbye to the days of soggy microwave pizza. Reopening envelopes If you seal an envelope and realise you've forgotten to include something inside, just place it in the freezer for an hour or two and voila, the envelope will unseal without a trace! The power of garlic Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a subtle taste and towards the end to blast it with flavour. Getting rid of ants It may sound cruel, but if you have an ant problem, desperate times call for desperate measures. Put small piles of polenta where you see ants and they'll gobble it up, return "home" and won't be able to digest it. Your ant problem (and the ants) will soon be dead.
planet to survive just a little bit longer. Wearing synthetic “Save the Whales” t-shirts or sympathies for the dolphins is not quite good enough. It is not really that hard. You care about the future of the Planet Earth or the future of your kids and grandkids, it is not really that hard, will cost you nothing and will give you a feel-good feeling. Just throw all the plastic wrapping, Styrofoam, melamine, rubbish in the green or red …….I took it upon myself to take back the bins after the lidded bin. council trucks have done their duties. Now, it is not too much of a drama for me to drag back the bins, even if there are maggots swarming all over it from the leftovers of some BBQ over the weekend. It’s not really a nice job, but it has to be This is the magic symbol. Look for this, it is on more done. I tip the bins over and give them a good hose-down, see items than you think. Everything that has this on, you throw you later, little creepers, the birds can have a little feast too. into the yellow bin, but no other crap. If you throw your Some people I know bag up and freeze these sort of things until napkins, prawn heads, baby-nappies in there, you stuff it all up. the night before, but perhaps this is not really realistic in this I do not know, what all your attitudes are, but keep this in mind: place. Fair enough, long live the maggots. RADCA relies on its commitment to recycling, for What does get my goat up, however is the fact that the yellowfinancial and material support from all levels of lidded bins are also being contaminated with all sort of general government. rubbish, nappies, plastic forks, serviettes and wrappers, all sort RADCA gives you all your easy access points, like of rubbish that should not be there. NOTES FROM THE R.T.C Welcome to the first edition of the Rollingstone Rag for 2016. Much has happened during the Rag’s break time. We have held 2 craft workshops, the birth of the Rollingstone Coastcare Group, The “Round the World Cruise” as presented by the R&D Seniors; A visiting Dental Van and of course our Rollingstone Australia Day Awards. The Craft workshops were well attended (Photos on the back page) Christmas lights were up-cycled and participants were kept cool while creating their own Ice Tie Dye outfits. Thank you, Sandra for presenting these wonderful workshops. The Rollingstone Coastcare Group are now a sub-committee under RaDCA and have completed their first training session at Old Balgal Beach. This is an exciting new project, still in its infancy and needs much support from the community. If you would like to see Balgal Beach returned to its natural state please call 47707855 for more details. Australia Day Awards – there were some very surprised recipients this year – They were absolutely taken for words. Thank you for nominating so many very deserving locals, each and every one of them not only deserves their nominations, they deserve to be awarded. I would like to thank the whole Rollingstone Community for taking me under your wings and for the nomination of “Citizen of the Year”. As I said on the day, I am not good with public speaking and I feel I did not adequately express the honour I felt, receiving this wonderful award. I feel very privileged to work for the Rollingstone Community and help where I can. Respect, Empowerment and Resilience are three corner stones in my philosophy and are the mantra I use when assisting everyone who comes through my door. Thank you on more levels than you can imagine. Dental Van – Project Outback Dental spent a day at the Community Centre at the end of January. Plans are on the table for the return of the van with the date advertised. What a wonderful concept – the dentist can come to you. A quick reminder that the Community Association has a facebook page “Rollingstone & District Community Association Inc”. Updates on community, the goings on at the community hall and special community events can be accessed from this page. Should you wish to comment please email me at the RTC rollingstonertc@bigpond.com. Your input into the community centre is valuable to us, please note: all suggestions are seriously considered. Breast Screen Queensland will be located at the Community Centre 21 – 24 March. Ladies between 50 – 74 are encouraged to have a free screen every two years. Ladies 40 years and over are eligible to join this free program as well. Please call 132050 to book your appointment. I have, will you? Attention: All hall users and workers – please note: the yellow lid rubbish bins are strictly for recyclable items only. A trend of late, is to fill them with anything, to the point where one of our volunteers asked the general waste collection truck driver to empty the yellow bins along with the red bins. Please, we are lucky to have the opportunity for recycling - as quoted by the same volunteer “why do we have to contaminate - with our unsorted rubbish, the efforts of all those in the community wanting to do the right thing by recycling!” Thank you to all involved in tree plantings over the Christmas Break. Your assistance made a big job look easy and the trees are progressing very well. Thank you to Gordon P for your diligence in watering the trees. 7-13 March is the inaugural Queensland Women’s Week with the International Women’s Day on 8 March. How to celebrate International Women’s Day 3 ways: Educate yourself – Learn the history of International Women’s Day Learn about women’s struggle for equality around the world Learn why the day is so important
Celebrating individual Women Help out a close female friend or family member Tell a woman what she means to you Thank the women in your life Treat women with respect Raise awareness
Celebrate on a Global Basis Donate to a local women’s shelter Check out women’s accomplishments Something to ponder: A man walked all the way from Dublin to Cork along main roads without passing a single pub. How did he manage that? (Pubs or “public houses” are very common in Ireland.) Take care…….Chris

Welcome to 2016 from the Community Centre!! Let’s hope it contains an abundance of blessings for us all. We support the well -being of our adults and children by creating a facility helping to build a resilient and connected community.
Sadly, Myrtle Silver passed away in December. Betty Farlow’s Mum, she was a long-term resident of Rollingstone. Vale Myrtle. We also lost Ric Dyer and John Price over the summer break. Two wonderful men who were well-known and loved by all of us who knew them in the many years they lived here. Both did so much for the district and we’ll miss them terribly. Vale Ric and John.
Passing on our love and best wishes to Claire Spittler and her son, Colin, as he struggles with a further bout of illness. And our thoughts and love are always in place for Di and Judy, our two very special ladies.
Bruce and Elaine Sommer have sold their home, as has Anne Price. We will truly miss these folk as well, all having lived here for many years and been great contributors in many and varied ways within our community. We wish them all the very best in their future endeavours. Arrivederchi, friends............
Garry Luff has left town for greener career fields and that is sad for us. He’s lived here quite a while now and been very active within and supportive of the community. He is also a most personable man with a good brain and lots of commonsense – don’t see a lot of that around these days – so we’ll miss him tremendously. Come back soon, Garry!
On a happy note, we had a special Christening Day at the Hall during February. Nevis and Graham Foster’s twin greatgranddaughters, Zoe and Mia, celebrated with lots of family and friends in a ceremony conducted by Fr. Giles, with some eats and drinks to follow. Truly a lovely, happy occasion for two little one-year-olds and those who love them.
Ian Dow and Reg Geritz are responsible for constructing the Australia Day Awards board for us and for this they need public and very grateful acknowledgement. The name plaques arrived in a timely manner and were able to be affixed to the actual hoardings just before Australia Day. This was a welcome surprise – and thank you, boys, so very, very much for your generous assistance and hard work. (P.S: You all ought to come and have a look at this display board because it’s most impressive!)
And big thanks must also go to Hut, Ian D., Reg, Gordon, Bob Mawhinney, Richard Pickering and his friend who did/ are doing the work associated with the landscaping of the Park and also Hall and RTC surrounds, e.g: the mowing, whippersnippering, watering, planting of trees and everything else over the summer months.
We held our annual Volunteers’ Luncheon during February also. It was very well-attended (55 – that’s not all of them; and we’re always needing more) and seemed to be a happy couple of hours with every one chatting up a storm and enjoying each other.
The Community Association has received funding to establish a local Coast Care Group which will hopefully be responsible for the rehabilitation of the old Balgal Beach dunes foreshore. Preparations have started with a formative meeting on Saturday, January 16th at the Hall. An overview of the whole project was made known to a well-attended meeting, an outline given of planned activites and intentions and a sub-committee of the Community Association to be known as “Rollingstone Coast Care” formed. First meeting was a workshop during February centring on noxious weed and grass identification and a further meeting will be held in March . These workshops will be accompanied by food and drinks. The Townsville Birdwatchers Club and a Herpetological Society will be invited to attend for any input they may be able to offer.
At the RTC, Chris can submit your medical insurance claims: BUPA, Medibank, etc., and Medicare! So much easier than traipsing around the city looking for offices and then having to park! She also does resumes and cover letters and we don’t charge very much – if anything.
We secured the services of the “outback” Dental Van which set up in our parking lot on January 29 th & 30th. It was really, really poorly patronised and but they will come back and try again at a later date.
Sad to see such a poor turn-up for Australia Day. Hard to work out why, but there it is!! Those attending spent a happy couple of hours and enjoyed a very yumm brekkie supplied by our local Lions. It’s very hard to forget we live in the best country in the world – just think about it and what we have in every way; and maybe next year you’ll join us to “Celebrate What’s Great”!!
A reminder too that Qld. Breast Screening will be at the Community Centre on March 21st – 24th incl. Very proud of the many and varied services our Centre Manager manages to put in place for our collective well-being.
A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for almost anything!! Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good. Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”. P6

Gidday Rollingstone Let’s do this bit first. A few weeks ago, I lost probably the most loyal and trustworthy friend I’ve ever had. He died very quickly of kidney failure and I never got to say goodbye. He was a mate that would stand beside you no matter what. When I was in the worst mood ever, he was still there – he never judged me, never made me feel stupid and he’d always forgive me. There was never a day that he wasn’t pleased to see me and there was nothing I couldn’t tell him. I’m not ashamed to say that I loved him dearly and I miss him still. Well, it’s 2016 and so far I’m bitterly disappointed. When I was a kid, I was 110% convinced that by this time we’d have made firm friends with the aliens, been jetting around in floating cars and would have figured out how to have intelligent conversations with dolphins. But no… the aliens are still up there laughing at us for knocking little white balls into holes with skinny sticks just to take them out and knock it into ANOTHER hole and I can’t get a certain Volkswagen to float (or sink) no matter how many times I push it down a boat ramp. I did have a good chat with a dolphin once – I remember being pretty drunk and he laughed at me a lot but I think it made perfect sense at the time. Facebook. Loooove Facebook. Seriously… I use it to post some photos now and then but it’s a great way to stay in touch with friends and family whether they’re across the world or two doors away… a great way to share news and information on world events, national incidents or what happening two doors away… a great way to keep up with who’s who in politics, fashion, media, movie stars or who just moved in two doors away… and lastly (my personal favourite) a great way to let the world know about property that was stolen or people wandering through your yard at night or how some fool caused an accident on the highway and why aren’t the police doing anything about it… OK, now I’m being a little sarcastic. Let’s be clear. You’re perfectly entitled to have your say on Facebook (or any social media) and let people know what’s happened to you but please don’t think for a heartbeat, that your social media comments are a substitute for formally letting the police know about an incident. If you want the police to become involved in whatever has happened to you, call 131444 (Policelink) or 000 (for emergencies) or 47707144 (our station). Or you could do it the old fashioned way and actually come in and have a conversation – remember them? That’s one of those things where you stand face to face and speak to another human without the use of an electronic device. Amazing huh? Ask someone over the age of about 50 to explain it to you (ok, ok… more sarcasm). We just got about as close to a lightning strike as I’d ever care to be. On the morning of Australia Day, about 4am, I was sitting on the lounge to keep the terrorist and one of her friends company during the thunder storm. They were fast asleep but we’d already had a few big bangs and I wasn’t sure if they’d stay that way. I’m sure that some of you have been really close to a strike before. It’s like night time turning to daytime for a split second, sparks shooting from the ground, the house shaking and the most intense explosion of sound… all at once. The sparkie that came out that morning reckons that the lightning found the top of the concrete post behind the station (about 20 meters from the house) and travelled down the steel reo into the concrete slab and blew out a piece of cement. At the time I was thinking more like an Al-Qaida attack or the apocalypse maybe. There may be photographs circulating shortly that show an individual dressed up to look vaguely (VERY vaguely) like Elvis. The imposter, although obviously ruggedly good looking, if not a little old for the job, may appear to be vaguely similar to someone you know. Let me put to rest, any suspicions or rumours you may hear and simply tell you that you definitely DO NOT KNOW who that imposter is. Thank you… thank you very much. Seeing as this is the first Rag of the year I thought it might be a good time to rehash some housekeeping items… for the sake of the newer residents. If you’ve read all this before, now’s the time to slip out and put the kettle on. As a police division we cover from around Leichhardt Creek (in the south) to around the Bambaroo Hills (north) and out to almost the Burdekin River. That area includes Balgal, Toomulla, Mutarnee, Bambaroo, Paluma and Hidden Valley. We look after over 80kms of Highway and beach, 1000’s of kilometres of bush track and every creek, stream and trickle in between. This is a two police officer station – me being the tall, baldy, bearded old sergeant that looks like an unmade bed and Senior Constable Shaun (the sheep) Sutton – the younger, fitter, much better looking red head (I have to talk him up – he’s doing all the work). Then there’s our admin guru, Christine – the brains of the operation and the one widely referred to as the REAL officer in charge. Christine’s office hours are 9.30am to 2pm, Monday to Thursday. The hours kept by Shaun and I are all over the place like a mad woman’s breakfast. The station can look after you with all your Weapons Licensing stuff, police checks and most of the Queensland Transport stuff – rego (car, boat, trailer), transfers, payments, etc. Three big things however… i) WE DON’T DO DRIVERS LICENSES… ii) WE DON’T HAVE EFTPOS (it’s cash or cheque only) and iii) YOU CAN’T PAY YOUR FINES HERE. If you’re travelling away from home for a long period of time, let us know – we’ll get some details and keep an eye on your place. But we can’t look after your house keys so please don’t ask us to keep them here. We have two box trailers here at the station (purchased by the Local Disaster Management Group) for use for any good reason. Good reasons include rubbish, moving house, gardening… NOT going on holidays. All you’ll need is your driver’s license and a signature – no cost. And that’s that. We try to handle most of our own work up here and we take responsibility for what happens in our area. Having said that, we get visits from time to time by the coppers from Deeragun, Ingham and the Traffic Branch. It’s worth mentioning because it’s usually ALL BUSINESS for them. So there you have it. If you’ve never read a Coppers Log before, this is usually what you’ll be reading – me dribbling on about what ever takes my fancy, having a rave about what I think matters or telling a war story about something that’s probably totally irrelevant. And if you’ve read this stuff before, you’re probably rolling your eyes by now. Stop complaining – I told you to go put the kettle on. w Seriously though, if you have any topics that you want to hear about, just let us know. I’m happy to get into just about any subject – but save yourself some time – nobody’s name will get mentioned and you won’t get as many gory details as you’ll find in the Woman’s Weekly – so don’t bother asking……………….Stay safe………...Goughy P 11

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome to a new year hopefully full of dreams come true, adventure and other wonderful things. While most people had a good rest during the break, your Committee has been quite busy organizing another successful New Years Eve Party and putting in place courses and other events that took place early in the New Year. But let us not get too far ahead of ourselves. At the Remembrance Day Ceremony on 11 November 2015, Vice-President Di laid a wreath on behalf of the Club but it was a pity more Club Members did not turn out for such an important occasion. The end of month Club BBQ held on 27 November was a great success with approximately 70 members and guests attending. Once again, we sincerely thank Col and Gladys Pace for their very kind donation of prawns and the fruit salad, ice cream and watermelon. Robert Pratt did wonderful things at the BBQ plate (he also cooked)! The winner of the Club Monthly Fishing Competition for October was Dan Dale (not again!) in the senior category. There were no junior or mystery prizes. Congratulations Dan. Our new members list is growing steadily and we are pleased to welcome Sue Mears, Michael and Toni Collinson, Glenn Hayman and Laura Martin, Josh and Naomi Peterson, Gale Sawtell, Darren and Kellie Thompson along with Matthew, Ben, Riley and Charlie, Mark and Kerri-Ann Fitzsimmons along with Emmy, Kaylee and Aiden, John O’Brien along with Rebecca and Shene, Sue Thompson, Peter and Jenny Bereyne, Bob and Judyana Holt along with Kiyana, Stephen and Jacqui Dilley, Denis and Linda Cleaver and lastly Neil and Katherine Rowlands. We bid you all a very warm welcome. A Defibrillator (AED) has recently been purchased by the Committee and it is now located on the front left side front wall at The Landing for use by anyone in the community in an emergency. This is a piece of quite expensive but vital medical equipment which can save lives. It is not a toy and should only be touched in an emergency. It is serial numbered for easy tracing and an alarm and strobe light activate immediately the front glass of the case is broken to gain access to the AED. As a consequence, a free CPR Course was conducted by staff of the Black River Ambulance Station on Saturday 30 January at The Landing (you were all notified by Email). On Saturday 20 February, a one day First Aid Course was conducted at The Community Centre and again, you were all notified. Then on 27th and 28th February a Boat Licence and Jet Ski Licence Course was held. As I said earlier, your Committee has been quite busy over the Christmas break. The January end of month BBQ was well attended and our yearly fishing trophies were presented to the following happy recipients. Club Senior Champion for 2015 was Dan Dale (no surprise there really). Dan can catch a fish in a bathtub. Club Junior Fishing Champion for 2015 was a very tight contest between four of our emerging stars but in the end after count backs etc, congratulations to our winner, Jake Collinson. This year we introduced a new award named the Meritorious Catch Award and the clear winner of that award for 2015 went to Perry Jones for his snag of a 15.29 kg Mackerel. Congratulations to our champion anglers. Those of you who perhaps some times read this article will recall we also have a monthly Tale of Woe Award and this year the trophy went to Brett Collinson. Congratulations and commiserations Brett. Monthly Club Fishing Competition winners for December was senior, David Beaumont and the mystery prize went to Steve McCalister. There was no junior prize. January was an all Jones affair with senior Perry Jones (11.20kg Cobia), junior Jack Jones (11.30kg Mackerel and mystery Melissa Jones (1.59kg Doggie). Well done. About 115 revellers saw the old year out at our New Years Eve Party held at The Landing. The food was very good and drew many favourable comments as did the last minute stand in entertainer, Tess Shore from Cranbrook. Thanks to John Holliday who drove the courtesy bus and to our members who helped out. Please note members that the Club’s end of month BBQ in March will be held a week earlier on 18 th March in lieu of 25th March which of course is Good Friday. The Closed Club Barramundi Fishing Competition on 5th and 6th February resulted in not one barramundi being landed despite the 17 groups that participated. The tides were right but apparently that was about all. If you hang around with an old hand, you know the type, old, rugged, street wise, been around the block a few times, you get to learn much as happened to me early on New Years Day when we were returning a load of tables to their rightful place when our truck driver demonstrated to us how to unload the tables which is quite simple. Untie the load, put the truck on a slight incline and touch the accelerator. The result, an untidy mass of tables scattered around the car park. Then all us labourers had to do was pick them up and carry them some distance in the blistering sun to the storage shed. The driver?, he sat in his air conditioned truck and laughed. Good one Condo! Members, an era in our Club’s history has regrettably come to an end with the recent resignation of our President of the past three years Mr. Garry Luff. Garry is leaving Paradise to follow a new career in rural banking based at Richmond in Western QLD. He became President back in November 2013 when the Club was in danger of closing due to few members and no social activities except for a fairly ordinary monthly BBQ which attracted about 9 people. Garry held a meeting, got a committee and kick started the Club again to its present state of about 150 financial members and 60 to 70 people attending the BBQs. He introduced new initiatives into the Club, trophies, New Years Eve Parties, local fishing competitions, family weekend trips away and the like but, more importantly, he introduced a new standard of cultural behaviour. Ladies and children can now attend our functions and not be subjected to lewd comments or foul language. It is now a family club, functions are family orientated where the whole family can and are encouraged to be involved and participate. Prize money is given equally to the adult as well as the children winners of our competitions; thanks to Garry’s leadership, the boys only fishing club mentality is long gone.
P 14
I personally thank Garry for is friendship and advice and I am sure I speak on behalf of you all when I say to him simply, “thank you”Garry may have resigned as President but he intends to remain as a Club Member and attend most functions. As he said, “it is only a six hour drive each way” As a result of Garry’s resignation, Vice-President Di Thompson will take over the President role and Mr. Graham Milliken who was a member of the General Committee will assume the role of Acting Vice -President. Both appointments are effective until the next Club Annual General Meeting. The first Tale of Woe award for 2016 goes to that man women adore and fish fear, that lord of the ocean, that, that, oh that will do. I speak of course of David Ruston who, on a recent trip “out there” with a mate broke the anchor rope, lost his expensive but more importantly all his contacts when his mobile got drowned then, on finally reaching the boat ramp, cut his foot open and, my three dear readers, no fish! There is more. More recently he purchased a new state of the art depth sounder and set off to scoop the pool at our Barra. Fishing Competition and found his new contraption did not work. Not a happy fisherman but as his dear wife Christine confided quite confidentially of course, “David, fishing and boats are a disaster”. We have some Members on the sick or on the mend list. As I write young Mac Sharpe is still in hospital following a serious quad bike incident on 23 January on his family’s property Fairlight Station. He was assisting to round up bulls when the front wheel hit a log and he was thrown with the bike coming down on top of him. He was in intensive care for some time with internal injuries but is now recovering. Past President Garry visited him and presented him with a fishing rod and reel for which he was most thankful, stoked was the word he used I believe. His Mother Cheree hopes to be able to spring him from the hospital for a couple of hours to attend our next Club BBQ on 26 February. Bruce Wollard is still plugging along and it is great to see Bruce and Lyn out and about again. Condo (Ron Condren) is paying so many visits to his doctor lately that word around Paradise is that he and the receptionist have a thing going. Stay tuned for an announcement but in the meantime I am going to get my best suit (the only one that still fits) cleaned. Get well soon. Don’t forget members the first markets for the year is on Saturday 5th March so please support our Club and drop in for a look. You never know, you might see something you can no longer live without and it is always a great place to catch up with everyone. We’ll see you there…………..Until next month, Ninger
AED (DEFRIBRILLATOR)
NOW AT FISHERMANS LANDING CAFÉ
The Fisherman’s Landing and Social Club is pleased to announce we now have in place a defribrillator on the wall near the steps down to the lower deck. Our club ran raffles and worked hard to get this piece of equipment for the Community. This defribrillator was purchased and installed by our club and is for use by all the community if needed. We held a CPR awareness course run by Black River Ambulance at the Landing on the 30th January which was attended by 15 members. Again on the 20th February we held fully Certified First Aid course at the Community Centre. This course was advertised on Balgal Beach News and was open to the community, unfortunately only 2 members from the open community attended but 14 of our club members are now fully certified. I intend to run another fully certified First Aid course in June if we have enough takers the cost is approx $100 for the full day. Also in June I would like to organize another CPR awareness course with the Black River Ambulance or other qualified group. The CPR Awareness course I hope will be free of charge. As we now finally have our defribrillator it would be good if as many people as possible are comfortable using it..ITS EASY. IT EVEN TALKS YOU THROUGH. Please contact me on 0427240472 if you wish to attend any of these courses, everyone in the community are welcome. Hope to hear from you all soon Di Thompson President ………………….Fishermans Landing Fishing and Social Club

AUSTRALIA DAY ON TOWNSVILLE’S NORTHERN BEACHES My Australia Day started at Rollingstone, hosted by the Rollingstone Lions Club and RADCA. We welcomed two new citizens, Danny and Annette De Bryn and handed out a number of local Australia Day awards. Christine Martin was awarded Rollingstone Citizen of the Year. I enjoyed lamb chops on the barbie at an Australia Day event hosted by the Toomulla Beach Community Association and was impressed with a well contested thong throwing competition at Saunders Beach, organised by the Saunders Beach Community Association. Luckily, I found a game of cricket late in the afternoon in the park at Sanctum, Mount Low. I’m pleased to report there were good performances in the field from Cr Sue Blom and Cr Tony Parsons. Hope you all enjoyed Australia Day. My batting was ordinary. BRING FORWARD NORTHERN BEACHES SCHOOL PROJECTS I've asked the Palaszczuk Government to bring forward the modernisation of facilities at Bluewater State School and the construction of a new school at North Shore to help create jobs in the wake of redundancies and voluntary administration at the Yabulu Nickel Refinery. Both Bohlevale State School and Bluewater State School currently operate under enrolment management plans, so there is no doubt that there is a real need for investment in education infrastructure servicing communities on Townsville’s Northern Beaches. TOWNSVILLE'S NORTHERN BEACHES CLUBS SCORE GET IN THE GAME GRANTS Three local sporting clubs on Townsville’s Northern Beaches secured funding from Round 4 of the Get in the Game grants program. The successful clubs included Full Boar Archers ($7,478), Northern Beaches Cricket Club ($7,324) and Parkrun – North Shore Townsville ($1,500). BUSINESS CONFIDENCE STALLS IN NORTH QUEENSLAND Businesses in North Queensland are frustrated by the lack of economic direction from the Palaszczuk Government, according to the latest Westpac Group CCIQ Pulse Survey of Business Conditions. Business confidence in North Queensland was the lowest of any Queensland region. Business conditions in North Queensland are the worst in the state. Business confidence indicators in North Queensland have fallen significantly since Labor came to office. The report identified “inaction” on infrastructure projects as weighing on business sentiment.
Rollingstone & District Seniors Senior membership is now due. Even in these days of price hikes our membership has not gone up and it needs to be paid by June 30th. After that date, people who have not paid their fees...will be un-financial. We have started the new year off with a bang by having a world cruise evening at the Community Hall February 13th. For those who did not bother to go you missed out on a fun night. There were heaps of laughs and the Lions manned the bar so drinks were flowing. Even though these events are put on by the seniors (they think they are the only ones comfortable enough with making clowns of themselves and having a great deal of fun while doing so), they are open to anyone who wants to come along for a great night out. We would like to thank everyone who helped make the night a success and a big THANK YOU to Babz and Richard for all the effort they put in bringing this cruise idea to life. Thank you, Thank you. The night was a HUGE success due to the Mammoth effort of all involved with the organising of this event. The senior age starts at 55 years, now you can’t say that is old, age is very much in your mind, so if you are new to the area and are unsure of us “old” fogies then come along to any of the various activities that are on at the community hall and you are sure to meet one of us there enjoying ourselves. Bingo started early this year due to popular demand but again we would like to see some new faces, we have a rolling jackpot which increases until it is won. The next one is an Easter bingo so would be great to see some Easter bonnets. So c’mon ladies dig em out. Gents too. Board games are on every 2nd Tuesday of the month and anyone who likes chess or various other board games will be welcomed with open arms. There are numerous games played so there is something to suit everyone. Community Activity not just Seniors. The seniors had their AGM 17th February and there has been a complete change about. We once more must thank the retiring committee for all their hard work in 2015/2016 and hope that they can now relax and let the new kids on the block muddle through. Our secretary of many years Claire Spittler has unfortunately had to resign from that position so it will be handed to the acting secretary. We must thank Claire for all the work she has done in this position and I hope that I can follow suit. NEW COMMITTEE: President: Peter Cahill Vice President: Secretary: Gaye Lovell Treasurer: Committee Members: Cheryl Pearson and Faye Thomson. Happy thoughts……………...Gaye

“A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WILDLIFE CARER” I received a phone call early one morning from 2 ladies out walking their dog. They had found a female Wallaby injured from being hit by a vehicle. I grabbed my rescue kit and headed around to Tracy St.. I found the Wallaby was a Mum and she had a baby around 190gr - 3months old in her pouch. Sadly, Mum had a broken back, but was still alive. I discovered the baby was alive as well. When I informed the Ladies they were very upset. Thanks to these ladies, I was able to take the Mum into the vets to be humanly put to sleep and the baby was taken to a carer. (Gaye Lovell). At the time of writing this the baby has put on weight, her ears are up, eyes open and is doing well. The ladies have named her Tracy and are following her progress - lots of photos and cuddles.I am telling this story because emotionally, it was so hard for the Ladies to see an animal in so much distress and have to deal with the aftermath of wallaby verses vehicle, but they did. They are very passionate about animals and don’t like to see them hurt. Please, if you injure our wildlife with your vehicle ensure the animal is not in distress and in need of medical attention - it does not take long to make a call to one of the wildlife carers listed above. Put our numbers in your phone for quick reference. A BIG THANK YOU to Michelle and Wendy for caring….well done ladies.

Natures Notes - Roy Mackay The humidity over the past two months and which is still with us, seems stronger than ever I can remember over the past twenty-eight years I have been here. At the same time we have more fires in the environment than ever before. This of course, wipes out a huge amount of our wildlife, especially those that cannot escape quickly enough: such as some lizards, frogs, insects, snakes, some birds and their nests and some small mammals. Although there were some fires between Townsville, Rollingstone/Balgal and Paluma they were not as fierce as in previous years. The frequency of fires in the environment determines the level of the population of the wildlife in the area: many birds, reptiles, mammals and amphibians are becoming rare because of these fires. The rise in population, the spread of housing and the clearing of land is also affecting our wildlife. We do not have enough National Parks and other reserves for our plants and wildlife. Have you seen a Frill-neck Lizard lately? I visit the Balgal area about once a week and am pleased to see the wildlife there, mostly birds. I see mostly birds and the occasional Agile Wallaby. Lately there have been flocks of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos in large numbers passing through and, yes, there are always plenty of Peewees. I must go down to the beach a bit more. Like me, you will occasionally be coming home after dark. Sometimes you will see a snake across the road, mostly pythons. They are harmless and there is no need to deliberately run over them. Last night I found a two metre Amethystine Python across the road. I stopped, picked it up and placed it in some nearby bush. You do not need to go that far. Just stop and go around it. Roy Mackay

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Welcome to 20 ‘sweet’ 16 from Rollingstone State School! I hope that you have all had a wonderful Christmas Break, and, like all of us here, have hit the ground running with our new year. At our school we have grown in students and in staff. We welcome Ibu Lumbi to our staff (you might know her as Lisa McMahon). She is teaching all of our students from prep to year 6 the love of language and culture through teaching Australian Curriculum: Language (Indonesia). We are also excited to utilise her expertise in Indigenous Cultures through working with our students from diverse backgrounds. We hit the magic number in 2016 to form our fourth class. We now have a straight prep class, with Mrs Burstow, a year 1/2 class with Mrs Drew, a 3/4 class taught by Mrs Ratcliffe and Mr Bruce and I share the 5/6 class. Mrs Jackson teaches physical education on a Tuesday, but will be heading off for maternity leave at the end of term 2. Mrs Drew has come to us from Paluma Environmental Education Centre, and we are excited that she has been able to join our staff. Our 2016 school leaders have been elected. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the senior students who presented speeches to the school. It made me so proud that we had such an outstanding group of students, and it was a very difficult decision to choose out of all of the leaders. The counting was very close, I had to count some categories twice to double check. Congratulations to Hayden Long and Lauren Hepple for being voted Rollingstone State School Captains. The sports house captains are: Jabiru – Morgan McMahon and Phoebe Adlard, Cassowary – Jaiden Long and Tasmyn Hughes, and Kingfisher- Caitlyn Jones and Chloe Hooker. Mr Bruce has already been very busy this year. He has just been for a week on Bruny Island in Tasmania as part of a Bush Blitz / Teach Live grant. The expedition placed 5 teachers from all around Australia with scientists collecting specimens to determine the distribution of plant, insect and marine species in National Parks. Each day, teachers were teamed up with scientists from different disciplines and sent all over the island to help collect. Afterwards the teachers wrote up their experiences in a blog for the students. If time permitted, they could help the scientists sort and preserve the day’s specimens. If you would like to see Mr Bruce’s blog, go to http://bushblitz.teachlive.org.au/index.php/ and look up the 2016 expedition. 1 Sorting dredge samples from the sea bed of the The expedition did not set out to find new species. Mainly it was meant to find out d'entrecasteaux Channel beside Bruny Island data so there would be a baseline for studying how the populations change. Two of the scientists were from the Hobart Botanical Gardens Seed Bank and they were collecting large numbers of seeds to study germination and growing techniques in case an area has to be repopulated after a natural disaster, A severe fire such as the ones in Tasmania at the moment could easily wipe out a common species in that area. It was an impressive experience. Scientists were passionate about their science and were willing to spend hours to help the teachers understand. The teachers spent further hours discussing how they could take the experiences back to the students. A Google Place forum has already been set up by one of the teachers so they can exchange ideas. Don’t forget. 2016 is our 100 year celebration. We will be celebrating this milestone on August 20th. See you all there.

MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB
Great to see our little club up and running again for another year with our regular Sunday morning bowls having recommenced on 14th February with a dozen hardy bowlers braving some extremely uncomfortable weather conditions. No doubt as the temperature starts to improve we will see our numbers increase accordingly. Our breakup day in December was extremely well attended with 30 bowlers enjoying a fun game of bowls and an excellent luncheon provided by the Resort. The Barefoot Bowler of the Year was awarded to Maureen C. which was well deserved as she hardly missed a game throughout the year and always brings her own sense of fun onto the green each week (along with recipes, fashion tips and anything else people want to talk about!). Our AGM was conducted on the same day with the following committee elected for the next twelve months President:…………..Phil Small V/President:………..Bob Brown Treasurer:…………..Michael Blake Secretary:…………..Maureen Cahill Games Director:……Tim Blake Some of our male bowlers have started playing with MacNade bowling club of a Saturday in the Ingham competition which provides an excellent playing standard and is ideal for those wishing to improve their own game. Michael is coordinating these trips so please contact him should you wish to be involved. I know there has been a fair level of consternation over the condition of our bowling green during our break-up period but this has now been rectified thanks to a huge effort by Greenkeeper Greg. The green has been scarified, mowed and sprayed over the last few weeks and now will only continue to improve. At this stage, we are only conducting games on a Sunday morning (9.00am ) but we do envisage playing on a Saturday afternoon once our commitment to MacNade Bowling Club is completed. Please direct any enquiries to Phil Small on 0418 779 292…………..Thanks. Welcome back to the Toomulla Newsletter. To think that it is March already! Hoping everyone had a wonderful Christmas & New Year. Congratulations to George Duvel on winning the magnificent Christmas Hamper and congratulations to all the other lucky winners. Thank you to our sponsors and those who donated prizes. So, we held the TBCA - AGM in January and the Executive committee elected are as follows: President - Rhonda Schwarz Vice President - Mick Wellington Secretary - Margie Gallagher Treasurer - Shane Wellington. Committee members - Don Cumming, Rudi Schwarz, Noel Gallagher, & we welcome a new committee member - Nick Salter. His lovely wife Wendy has also offered to help with ideas for fundraising 2016. Wendy has already put a concept forward for a “ Duck Cup “……… now that will have you thinking!! Watch this space for the next update. Everyone had a great time on Australia Day in the park. We were more organised this year with the heat & sun. Thanks to the Fishing Club for letting us use their Gazebo’s and thanks Ben for bringing down the generator and setting the fans up to keep people cool. The kids had a great time playing cricket, ‘throwing the thong’, treasure hunt, trivia and also winning lots of prizes. Congratulations to all those lucky people who won prizes in the raffle. Ben, Rudi & Noel cooked the Aussie Lamb and sausages to perfection. The kids did better at Trivia then the adults . .. Haha !! Happy Birthday to Rudi…50 something…. & Macy - 5 who both share the same birthday date (20th) Jayden - 5 & Debbie… 50 something … who both share the same birthday date (21st) for February. There is a Easter Raffle coming up. Tickets will available this week. The prize will be a beautiful Easter Hamper. We will draw the Raffle on Tuesday 22nd March 2016. Happy Birthday to those who celebrate a birthday in March….....….Cheers…...Rhonda

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc Lions being part of something great Welcome everybody, it’s March already so where did the start to the year go? Are you new to our district? Noticed locals passing in their cars and waving, this is an unwritten law here in Rollingstone, an acknowledgement that we are all part of the one Community so join in and see if you are the first to wave. Also if you are relatively new you would be aware that the little bridge in Rollingstone Street is closed for repairs that hopefully will commence this month, however you may not be aware that our Lions Club with support from the Community Association has put a submission to Council to have the repaired Bridge named after a prominent pioneer in our district. Through the Rolly Rag; we called for submissions of names and we had a strong response for 3 people with Isabella Fitzpatrick coming through as the strongest preference; Her history is displayed on the wall in our Community Hall Now here’s where you can support our local community; Council has agreed that Isabella would be a worthy nomination but they wish to conduct their own survey to gauge local interest in having the bridge named. Council has not indicated how they will conduct this survey but this is a once only opportunity to recognize this outstanding lady so we appeal to everyone to respond to the Council survey. At our wonderful Australian Day Celebrations at the community hall, I introduced the service groups in our community and stressed we can all do with new members no matter how old or young you are or if it’s only a few hours volunteering,The Lions, Leos and Junior Leo’s are no exception, we would love to see some new faces I have grouped all the Service Groups together with their contact numbers so could I encourage you to check them out and see if you would like to volunteer your services no matter how small, to any or one of them. R.S.L. NEWS
Another year has begun with continued commemoration in relation to World War 1. This year is the 100th year since the Battle of Pozieres, a battle which claimed many Australian troops who had fought at Gallipoli and were then sent to France. This occurred in July. More about that later. It is also the 100th year of the formation of the RSL! Then we can’t forget Townsville is also celebrating 150 years! Our co-patron, Councillor Suzanne Blom, certainly looked the part when dressing in the style of that era. Well done Sue! Sadly, our member Rick Dyer, passed away on the 20th December last year. Rick had been hospitalised for some time since moving to Townsville and was not at all well. Helen has moved to Villa Vincent and is in a higher care section. Paul, their son, said Helen had settled into the new situation and was better able to move about and interact with others. We wish Helen all the best for her future. Our AGM will be held on Sunday, 6th March 2016, at the Mystic Sands Golf Club, at 10:30am. Hopefully, many of our members can attend, hear how our club is going and provide direction as to the future of our club. It will be Steve and Vonnie’s last day, I believe, and we can say farewell and thank you to them for their assistance over the past years. Any members of the community who have been contemplating joining the RSL are most welcome to attend. On Australia Day Rollingstone RSL were proud to receive the Community Event of the Year Award for 2015. This was for the ANZAC Day Service held to commemorate 100 years since Gallipoli. Mick Coulson, Vice-President, accepted the award from Councillor Sue Blom, with John Holliday as MC. Thank you to RADCA and the Lions for this award, which we have proudly displayed at the golf club. Most members have paid their dues for 2016 and I will be in touch with those few service people who haven’t paid as the last date for payment is 28th February, if you do not want to have to re-join. We need to thank Ashley Foster and his son David for helping Mick to update the board. There was Ashley, balancing on the ladder, as he traced the names and numbers, and David climbed the ladder to add the new names to the boards. Thank goodness for our younger members! Back to Pozieres! I have received a letter from the Pozieres Remembrance Association, a group that along with the Village of Pozieres, are hoping to build a Memorial Park on the piece of land described by Charles Bean as “the one place on Earth most densely sown in Australian sacrifice”. The Memorial Park will not be a place of grandiose monuments but rather a series of gardens designed to show respect for the men who still lie there, and to protect their resting place for all time. Unfortunately they have not had as much support as they expected and are therefore asking Sub- Branches for assistance, and individuals as well, who may have had family members serve at Pozieres. Initially they believed it would not be hard to sell 7000 bricks at $50 a brick, Australia wide. I believe we will discuss this at our AGM, but please note any individuals can also contribute if they so desire. You can see their web page at www.pozieresremembered.com.au if interested or please contact me for further information. I believe our member Doug Osmond is thinking about going to Pozieres as his father fought there. Finally, thank you to all of our supporters of the Goose Club. On the 4th December 2015, our lovely workers behind the bar, Colleen and Emma, won $260. Then we had only been back for 5 weeks and on February 19th Robyn Small won $280. Due to popularity, all numbers have now been taken. New people to the area have come along on a Friday night and asked for numbers. So all are taken at present. However, if you are going away, as a number of our members do, you can always say, as Tony G (M5) does, sell my numbers whilst I’m on holiday. Some people have queried why we don’t start with a blank sheet on Friday night. However, selling 100 numbers on the night would be very difficult most weeks and we have members who work but like to support the RSL by having permanent numbers. Plus, we always have our raffles! We do the 2 meat trays (50 tickets sold at $2 a ticket) and then a bottle of spirits or $30 golf club voucher (72 tickets at $1 a ticket). Thanks again to all of our supporters, be it in buying Goose club or raffle tickets. Thank you to all of our ticket sellers who do their rostered night and to those who volunteer when extra help is needed. Your support is most appreciated. Reminder: Monday, 25th April is ANZAC Day!.................Cheers, Ronnie C.
