Thank you to the Rollingstone Community Six years ago, I was obese and at risk of heart attack, diabetes and stroke. Since then, I have lost over 40 kg, eliminated medications and reduced my risk of heart attack. This year I rode in the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride, ran the Townsville half marathon and the Melbourne Marathon. My training has consisted if running laps of Balgal, running home from Frosty Mango or Yabulu, endless laps of swimming pools, riding the Cardwell Range and home from Ingham and Townsville, paddling my kayak back and forth between Toomulla and Hencamp Creek and hours at the gym. I wish to thank my friends, family and the Rollingstone community who have supported me. Thank you to all the people who say “good morning” on my early morning runs. Thank you to all the motorists who wave and give me space on the road. Thank you to all the Rollingstone and Helens Hill students who wished us well on the Tonwsville/Cairns ride. Thank you to Vicki who paddled, trained and rode with me. Thank you to Natalie (who completed the Tokyo Marathon) and trained with me. Thank you to Michael who has tolerated endless early mornings, dutifully positioned water bottles along various routes, and dropped me off along the highway so that I could run or ride home. Thanks also to all the other well-wishers who I have passed along the way……….Katrina Blake Update: Katrina completed the Melbourne Marathon in 4 hours and 41 minutes, well inside her goal of beating 5 hours. She finished in 4768th out of a field of 6046. I would like to congratulate the Rollingstone Community Association, the Rollingstone Lions club and local Rollingstone businesses for putting on another great Pineapple Festival. The stalls were diverse and interesting while the bands, individual performers and the La Luna performers Georgia Bell and Bec Courdice were all first class. My family enjoyed the day with Dean my son and his friends enjoying the tug of war event and it was nice to touch base with Tony Accorsini. It was pleasing to see The Rollingstone Primary school stall on display showing the fine results the local students have achieved. Well done to the Principal, staff and very importantly all the students. The food and coffee were good and the pineapples we bought and took home were sweet. I look forward to future festivals and congratulations to all involved. Kindest Regards….Ray Gartrell …...Councillor Townsville City Museum calls for collectors to contribute to Townsville 150 exhibition Local North Queensland collectors are again in the Museum of Tropical Queensland’s sights. The call is out for local collectors to look deep within their closets and cupboards for objects that could become part of the exhibition Townsville turns 150: The old and the news. The Museum is partnering with Townsville City Council, James Cook University and the Townsville Bulletin to create an exhibition celebrating Townsville’s 150 year anniversary with a focus on how milestone events influenced the city’s development and were reported in the media. Exhibition curator Ms Viv Moran said the Museum was hoping generous locals would come forward with their objects to help tell the story of how Townsville has changed since the 1860s. “We’re looking for objects that show how technology has progressed over the past 150 years including things such as telephones, medical and domestic equipment. “We’re also looking for objects from significant periods during the city’s development such as during the two world wars. Other categories of objects being sought include children’s toys and games, early Townsville souvenirs and postcards and equipment or material from early local businesses. “We appreciate the effort and value that these objects hold for their owners, and each item will be treated as carefully as if it were part of the Museum collection for as long as it is on loan to us,” she said. People who own objects they think might add to the exhibition should contact Ms Viv Moran directly on 07 4726 0643 or email viv.moran@qm.qld.gov.au Townsville turns 150: The old and the news will open in February 2016. Through the support of their councils, locals from Charters Towers and Hinchinbrook receive free entry to the Museum. The Museum of Tropical Queensland, part of the Queensland Museum Network, is open from 9.30am -5pm daily. Media Contacts: Lorelle Schluter: 4726 0603 / 0424 408 373 or

NOTES FROM THE R.T.C
!–
Welcome to November – How fast has this year flown. The Christmas season is only around the corner. The Car Boot Sale went really well. Thanks to John and Shirley from the Lions for cooking up the Sausage Sizzle and Dan and Mon for Coffees and Slushies. More than a dozen sellers came along and the ones I chattered to reported a successful morning. Thank you to all who came along for a look and to bag a bargain. Plans are a foot to hold another Car boot Sale, but not just right now. The learning from the morning is that October is starting to get very warm and it was suggested we utilise the shade trees out the back. Any other feedback will be gratefully received. A reminder of the Councils free dump days - Friday, October 30 to Monday, November 2 – a good chance to rid your properties of unwanted “Stuff” before the cyclone season. Next month I will publish a list of the events and parties for the festive season. If your group is holding a festive season event/ gathering, call me to have it listed. The weekend of 5 & 6 December is going to be a Christmas Packed weekend. Saturday 5 is the date of the final Fisherman’s Landing Market Day; Christmas festivities and activities and the Opening of the Stinger net are being planned. The next evening will host the Rollingtone Christmas Carols 6 December. We are getting the wonderful help from Rollingstone School this year. The invitation is open to all local performers to lead the chorus in a couple of songs. Please call Chris at the RTC or call Mr Bruce at the School. See advertisement on page 26 for more details of both events. The September School Holiday Lu Luna Workshops went over very well; with almost a full house each time. The Drum Circle With Alex Salvador was also a wonderful hit with both the Children and Adults who attended. Photos do not do justice to the unity, volume and vibration within the hall that morning. Watch this space for the Christmas School Holiday program. Two art workshops with Re-Crea8Tiv and Fishing Workshops and a Fishing competition with the Fisherman’s Landing Fishing and Social Club. Details will be in the December Rollingstone Rag. It will be time to think about whom to nominate for the Australia Day Awards soon. Put your thinking caps on - who has gone out of their way to be helpful in our small community or to yourself individually; which young person has shown great community spirit or worked hard to achieve on the sporting field. Is there a Senior who has given above and beyond? Nomination forms will be published in next month’s Rag. The weather station at the RTC is now online. Bookmark the link below into your internet explorer:http:// www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=IQUEENSL849 The data is updated every couple of seconds giving accurate information including wind speed / direction, cloud cover, rainfall and pressure, plus more. The only difference is the daily reporting times are from midnight to midnight where the BOM works from 9am to 9am. There may be some discrepancy with the volume of rain reported due to this, however using the graphs on the website, it can easily be worked out. Any queries call Chris 47707855. This is the weather captured as we speak, right in our local environment. To our volunteers – thank you. Every month I say this, I know, every month I mean it. Your assistance and time helps make the workload at the Centre so much more manageable. Whether you give time sporadically or are here regularly, every precious minute and your skills are gratefully received and appreciated. Watch those new speed limit changes between Leichardt Creek and the southern side of Bluewater – please observe these changes – ultimately, the changes have been made to keep us safe. Take Care……………….Chris

Wednesday, Novr. 11th @ 11 am. After all, its the date and time that First World War peace was declared..............and there’re few more important dates than that in our lifetimes. People are essentially kind and good. We need to thank Hut for his valued assistance when we so badly needed it. We also need to recognise Kerry Gavan and the Australian Railway Heritage Society for their contribution to the station building display that we’re planning. They’ve been so kind and helpful at a time when all looked very much out-of-reach. And then Clr. Tony Parsons comes to the rescue with some more donations from QR for the Station display also. Such a wonderful result – goodonya, Tony. And same accolades go to Tommy & Joanie Ruddick for the new “old” Tea Trolley to go into the Station building as well. This was made from scratch by Tommy and is absolutely superb. So many nice folk doing such nice things!! And as William Shakespeare once said: “I can no other answer make but thanks, and thanks, and ever thanks............” to you all! So, after 3 years of trying to get it right, we’ve finally succeeded and we’ve received our Final Inspection certificate on the Railway Station building. That means all is now in place on all our buildings as required by Council and with everything legal we’ll be having an ‘open(ing) day’ some time next year. The rotten fascia across the back of the main building at the Community Centre has been attended to by Council at their expense, for which we are extremely grateful. Trees accidentally planted on the septic drainage area, have been removed and relocated. Plans are well under way now for the railway display which will be put in place on the south-western side of the Station. And this also applies to the Australia Day Awards Honour Board which will be erected close by. We’re hoping to conduct an Art & Craft Exhibition competition next year – perhaps in conjunction with our Open Day for which we’re looking at Sunday, June 6th (Queensland Day). We’re not sure yet, but we’re hoping to have substantial prizes so for those of you in our community who are arty or crafty, please start thinking about entry or entries and any other work you’ve done that you might like to display for sale. This event may have a Junior section (as yet undecided) but is primarily for adult contributors. We believe there’re quite a number of budding and aspiring artists who live both locally and in the Northern Beaches area...........pottery, hand-made soaps, quilting, hand-crafted timber, homemade jewellry, any amount of “crafty” diversity. Tell your family and friends that the 80kph zone on the Bruce Highway between Townsville and Rollingstone extends from the 80 speed sign just south of the Bluewater Creek Bridge until the 100 speed sign just north of the Leichhardt Creek Bridge – and vice versa. We’re still working towards forming a Coast Care group to start regeneration of old Balgal Beach foreshore. Just waiting for Council to finalize some of the stuff they have to do and then we’ll meet with them to set a date. We’re meeting with NQ Dry Tropics as you read this, sorting out funding grants and a partnership project. So things really are moving, just taking time to do so as happens pretty often with these sort of things. The Community Centre will be closed this year from Decr. 18th and re-opened on January 4th. This gives everyone working at the Centre a couple of weeks of some unencumbered time to enjoy Christmas and New Year with family and friends. As volunteers, they all give freely and unselfishly of their time for the rest of the year and we feel they deserve some sort of reward, no matter how small. The first RAG of the new year is the March edition, published to be distributed towards the end of February.
Congratulations to our Centre Manager, Chris and her Dad, Bernie Smith, who during October, were awarded the 20 Year Clasp
on the Meritorious Service Medal, in recognition of their years of contribution to the Qld SES.
Well..................the Car Boot Sale was a success. Lots of ‘car boots’ and lots of people participating, looking, and buying. It was
however, a very hot day seeing as how we’re just coming out of the cooler months and with no shade in the Centre carpark, it made for extremely warm conditions. We’ll have another one (maybe 2, even) next year and move it around under the trees behind the RTC. Anyhow, it was most worthwhile and we thank everyone who came along. So good to see Dan and Mon there with their slushies and coffee. Most appreciated by those in attendance; and the Lions had a sausage sizzle and drinks, so everyone was accommodated. Our Gardener Extraordinaire, Committee Member, Senior of the Year and all-round good sheila (Di Stephan) has established a garden planter (beside the barbecue area) full of herbs: sweet basil, mint, parsley – curled leaf and cilantro – oregano, sage, rosemary, thyme and not-too-hot chilis. These are for the community, should you need something in a hurry and not have it at home. Everyone is most welcome to access the herbs; that is until someone destroys it all which has happened to all our prior attempts. A few Sundays ago, I headed out to Mass and had gotten out onto the Beach Road when I realised I wasn’t quite completely
dressed. I had underps on, but had neglected to put on my shorts!! Ooooh-waaahhh. A quick “U-ie” and back home for some pants. Now, I know the Lord has a good sense of humour, but I’m not sure if it extends that far – let alone what the rest of the congregation might have thought? Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”. P6

Gidday Rollingstone, So… it’s early October – and after the mad rush to have last month’s article submitted in time (and because my right arm may well be out of action for a little bit closer to the deadline – more on that later) I’m getting a head start. Impressed? Nah… nor was anyone else. The situation with the feral horses in our National Parks has reached (and breached) boiling point with another tragic death on the Bruce Hwy as a result of collisions with these animals. Let’s be clear… I’m not about to enter into a conversation about what should or shouldn’t happen to control this situation. You have your opinion – and you’re entitled to it… but I’ve heard plenty – dozens of opinions - from experts (and wannabe experts), amateurs, environmentalists, scientists and horse enthusiasts, property owners, arm chair critics, “know-all / know nothing” morons who just want to beat a drum and complete liars who just want to sensationalise the situation. And I’ve spoken to the family of the boy who lost his life. He was 15. I was told that, given my position, I might have been “a bit too passionate” in my opinions on this… but he was just 15. Do you have a son or daughter about that age? Forgive me… but what you think of my opinion – what you think about my “passion” – doesn’t mean much to me. In the long run, the actions taken to address the feral horses coming onto the Bruce Hwy, will be taken in the best interests of the road users and with the safety of the public held as the highest priority. So now, it’s getting towards mid-October and I’ve got a fairly clear picture of what’s coming up. I go under the knife for an operation on this arm tomorrow and then I’m out of action for a week or so. After that, I’ll be taking a couple of weeks leave (why not… I can’t do much at the minute anyway). Super Trooper Shaun (the Sheep) Sutton will be fighting crime and battling the forces of evil and corruption while I’m out. Other than that, it’s business as usual. And…..here we are – late October, stitches, pins and screws holding a tendon in place in my arm and the Rolly Rag editors doing the Haka at me over the article being late… again. My hat goes off to the people involved in producing the Rag – they have been nothing but patient and tolerant with me ever since I started doing these articles nearly 12 years ago. Yours truly, on the other hand, has been consistently inconsistent. Anyway, at this stage of the game a partial cull of the feral horse population has been conducted, the speed limit on the Bruce Highway is back to 80km/h between Bluewater and Leichhardt Creek for about 3 months and Clemant State Forest is closed and will remain that way until National Parks decide otherwise. The opinions are still flying thick and fast but basically what’s happened, has taken place to protect the public – agree with it… don’t agree with it… read paragraphs 2 and 3 again. I don’t think there’s too much else I can tell you about. We had a little traffic accident on Balgal Beach Road – no major injuries there. There have been a few visits from the crews from Deeragun and Ingham just to help us out while I’ve been slowed up with this arm – no great dramas. Sutto has opened accounts with a few seafood shops around the place to try and cover his failed fishing trips. The creeks are looking more like rock gardens than waterways – in fact I’m in the market for a good old fashioned American Indian rain dance (I would actually settle for someone with a suntan, a tom-tom and a feather duster) just to get past this dry spell and a big thank you to the mysterious person who delivered the small package of TimTams to the station and left without being identified – nice work. You’ve earned the title of the “Phantom Bikkie Bringer”. Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, will be Anzac biscuits. If your true identity is discovered, this office will disavow all knowledge of your existence. This paragraph will self-destruct in 10 seconds. ……………..Stay Safe…………..Goughy

Rollingstone & District Seniors Aquarobics started on Friday 16th October. A group of about 15 intrepid Seniors tip-toed into the water to once again get our bodies nimble and trim. The water at first was coolish but once we started our exercises everyone soon warmed up and it was really most exhilarating – thanks Babz. Please note, Seniors will be holding their final cake stall for the year on the 5th December at the Christmas Markets. All contributions of cakes, biscuits etc. will be greatly appreciated. Senior Christmas Lunch will be held on Friday 11th December 2015 at the Community Hall commencing 12.30 p.m. at a cost of $20.00 per head. This year we are having caterers Andjenitas provide the meal for us, so to assist with numbers those of you wishing to attend please pay your $20.00 and advise either Rhonda Muller on 4770-7957, or myself, Claire Spittler on 4770-7258 no later than 27th November 2015. BYO alcohol. Finally a group of Seniors went to see Saturday Night Fever at the Civic Theatre. In a word – it was brilliant. The costumes were sparkly, the music of the BeeGees nostalgic, and the changing of the scenery expertly done. It was an extremely polished performance about testosterone fuelled youth, a boy from the ghetto who only wanted to dance, the agonising anxiety of an unplanned pregnancy and subsequent suicide, all set to the toe-tapping music of the BeeGees. Those who didn’t see it missed a jolly good show. Til next month, take care of each other…………………Claire

Wildlife Therapy Recently I had my elderly Father staying with me and he got a big kick out of helping me in feeding my baby possums and I saw that when he felt down, they actually helped boost him up. He really enjoyed the little ones that could crawl up his shoulders and around his neck. I had 2 babies at the time and one was larger and furrier than the other. One morning I was feeding the larger one and Dad came out and looked at it and was amazed that the little one had grown so much overnight, I looked at Dad and informed him that this was not the baby that he has jumping all over him but the larger one of the two and that the little one was still snuggled up in his bed. With that, Dad promptly went over and picked him up and said NOW I can see the difference, this is MY little one. They were really good therapy for Dad as he has a lot of medical issues and these little “wild” critters gave him so much pleasure and he could focus on something other than his health issues. Now that Dad has returned south, I have to keep him informed of their every development and photos are a must. He really was so taken by these little baby possums; it was amazing. Being a carer has so many unthought of rewards.

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G.Day All, The Greek Festival at Riverway was a great fun time out for our members. We took the Community Bus to the festival. We arrived there about 3.30 pm, looked at all the stalls then we all sat down to watch the entertainment, which was excellent; plenty of dancing etc. Of course the Belly Dancers were popular. We ate well and as always the company was really good. We arrived back at Rollingstone at 10pm. All exhausted after such a good day out. Our monthly get together at the hall saw a large roll up of members. We played Team Golf Putting with seven teams playing for the gold prize. Team three won the prizes after a lot of competition. WELL DONE TEAM. We had a HOT DOG NIGHT which was different, with lots of nibblies first, followed by YUMMY desserts. It was really top stuff as usual. Kerrie Cochrane won the first Lound’s Fresh Seafood Raffle and Elaine Finn won the second one. Congratulations girls, Col and Annie have the best seafood in town. ENJOY. Tommy Ruddick won the fish of the month with a 54cm Finger Mark. Well done Tom. There was no winner for the Mystery Length this month. Our BBQs are held on the first Sunday of the month at the Community Hall commencing at 5pm. Visitors are most welcome at our events. Meals are $10 per person; children accompanied by an adult are free. Member’s meals are always free. We are going to organize some more social nights out, they are just so much fun……… Stay safe and happy………..Kindest regards from your COMMITTEE.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. This month we have lots of information for our members about upcoming events so please stay tuned and read on. The end of month BBQ held on 25 September was again a huge success and once again our thanks to Robert Pratt who wove his magic at the hot plate, the steak was suburb. The monthly winners of the Club Fishing Competition were Senior: Dan Dale, Junior: Mac Sharpe and Mystery: Mon Dale. Congratulations. Not many enthusiasts turned up for the AFL Grand Final function at The Landing to watch a very one sided disappointing game for a grand final. The only interest after kick off was by how many points the winning mob would win. However, the following day for the NRL Grand Final the hot dogs were consumed with gusto while the 30 odd people enjoyed a great game the result of which hung in the balance until the last 45 seconds and was resolved after full time. The crowd brought the new roof to the lower deck down when JT kicked that golden point. By the time this fine family magazine hits your letter box, our end of month BBQ that was brought forward to 23 October (you were all notified) due to the Lucinda trip will be over for another month. I hope we all had a great time. The Lucinda trip has been well supported with over 40 people indicating their intent to make the journey. Our next big function will be on Saturday 5 December when the last Balgal Beach Market Day for the year will be held and we will also celebrate the opening of the Stinger Net for another season. Many people have been busy putting this day together so we are hoping for a good attendance. Dan Dale has about 55 stalls booked with more enquiries coming in daily. The Rollingstone Police will conduct The Big Dry Boat Race where a very handsome trophy will be presented to the Senior and Junior winning teams. Now is the time to get a team together, build your boat and start practice. The Rollingstone State School P & C will host a kids beach wear fashion parade; there will be live music; face painting; food stalls; beach cricket; a water slide provided by the Rural Fire Service and lots more for everyone. Please take note of the date, Saturday 5 December from 8.00 am to late afternoon followed by on Sunday 6 December Carols by Candlelight presented by RADCA at the Community Hall. It is going to be a big weekend in Balgal. Once again your Club is pleased to host the annual New Years Eve Party at The Landing. The Committee has begun preparations for the night but this year acceptance for Club Membership Applications will cease on Tuesday 15 December until Friday 15 January 2016. If you are not a financial member by 15 December and you wish to attend the party the cost will be $75.00 per family or $35 per single. Remember, financial membership runs from 1 July to 30th June the following year, not as some believe from the date of joining. The function is free for current financial members but if you are in doubt as to your current membership financial status please ring me on 0427 240 472 for clarification. We have many community minded people in our area. You know, those people who work tirelessly behind the scenes without looking for accolades or fanfare. Well, we are very lucky to have one such person on our Executive Committee; Club Treasurer Christine Ruston. Christine is always ready to lend a hand where needed and that now leads me into the very much coveted and sought Club Trophy, The Tale of Woe Award for the month. You see Christine answered the call from RADCA Management and volunteered to help out by delivering Rolly Rag on RADCA’s postie type scooter...No problem...never ridden one but if you can ride a bike...Not so...She had so much fun falling off the first time she decided to do it again and again. Don’t worry Chris, Sue V.W. is frantically looking for a set of trainer wheels so parents if the set off your young childs’ trike goes missing, bang on the gate with all the flags. Recently I attended a three day function “down south” where a whole bunch of blokes gather and reinforce that apt adage “The older we get the better we were”. Retired and broken down ex-Shearers who struggled to shear a 100 a day are now boasting 200 plus and I am very surprised that each of us in the early 1960s Charleville Rugby League Team weren’t snapped up for the Australian Team; gee we were good! Whilst down there I joined an organization called P.E.T.A. or People for The Eating of Tasty Animals. However; I find that even though I like cats, I cannot eat a whole one by myself. We heartily welcome new Club Members David Beaumont and Renae Santini and their children Jack, Karla, Amari and Charlie. Welcome on behalf of the Committee and all Club Members. There is no fishing article this month from Dickie as he is having a well earned and very much needed rest in Thailand. We have not heard from him but there have been no reports of the Thai Government declaring war on Australia so we must assume he is behaving himself. Dan Dale reports that the markets are going well with two new stall holders selling clothes and, most importantly, not one but two fruit/veg stalls. The Markets are on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month but remember this year we will close from 5 December for the Wet Season break. Any queries should be directed to Dan Dale on 0417 076 742 or 0448 274 228. I am in trouble with the Editor of this fine family magazine because I took my dear wife Di on a short holiday in the motor-home when I should have been working on this article. I did learn one thing on this trip, don’t trust little old ladies. I phoned ahead to ask permission to traverse and camp at a beautiful place on their cattle property and asked about the road conditions. Dear Mrs. H. assured me the dirt road surface was like a baby’s bottom, smooth as a billiard table. After leaving the sanctuary of the bitumen we were on the 44 km of dirt to reach our destination and that is when we realized that dear Mrs. H had made a mistake as her version of smooth and ours are at opposite ends of the scales. By the time we arrived, Di’s silicon breast implants had moved, one was on her head like a silly hat on race day and the other was around the back of her neck like a big zit ready to squeeze. I am very gratified to report that they have since slipped, sloshed, slurped and slid back into place – I think, could be worth checking out! As for her false teeth, like the news broadcasts say, the ground and air search will begin again tomorrow at first light. I do hope they find them soon, meals at our house now take for ages and I am sick of chewing her meals for her…………...Until next month (if I am still able), Ninger NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: Dear Readers, we are leaving the visuals (images of the silicon breasts) up to your own imagination. ………..HaHa.…...LOL

PONTOONS FOR BUSHLAND BEACH & SAUNDERS BEACH I welcome news that floating pontoons will be installed at boat ramps at Bushland Beach and Saunders Beach. This is good news for boaties, with pontoons increasing safety and accessibility for younger and older people and people with a disability. The residents on Townsville’s Northern Beaches are keen fishers and these pontoons will certainly be used regularly and appreciated. I’m pleased the Marine Infrastructure Fund, put in place by the former LNP Government, has allowed for these improvements. RUMOURS AT YABULU In recent weeks, there have been rumours about the future of the Yabulu Nickel Refinery. These rumours, while unsubstantiated, have been persistent. The Refinery is a significant employer and an important part of the economy in the Townsville region. I have no desire to alarm employees of the refinery, or to create any concern for the community in the Townsville region. I would be pleased, in fact relieved, to see a statement from the Refinery, clarifying the matter and resolving any current uncertainty. The Queensland Government should also clarify if discussions have been held with representatives of the Refinery about its operational future. Such a clarification is sought to provide comfort and confidence to the community in the Townsville region. BRADY SACKED FOR DOING A GOOD JOB? The Palaszczuk Government sacked former Port of Townsville Chair, Pat Brady, despite the Port achieving strong results under his leadership. Just two days later, the Annual Report for the Port of Townsville was released showing the Port was going from strength to strength. To sack Mr Brady when the evidence showed he was doing a good job, doesn’t make sense. The only conclusion is that the decision by the Palaszczuk Government was politically motivated. It is concerning that Labor is putting politics ahead of good governance.

Council Clippings - Division One I am very pleased to advise that boating infrastructure will be improved on Townsville’s Northern Beaches, with floating pontoons to be installed at boat ramps at Bushland Beach and Saunders Beach. The upgrades follow similar recent infrastructure improvements to boating infrastructure in the Hinchinbrook electorate, including a new boat ramp at Saltwater Creek at Toomulla and a new floating pontoon at Mourilyan Harbour. This is good news for boaties on Townsville’s Northern Beaches, with floating pontoons increasing safety and accessibility to boating opportunities for both younger and older people and Queenslanders with a disability. The residents on Townsville’s Northern Beaches are very keen fishers and improvements floating pontoons at both the boat ramps servicing Saunders Beach and Bushland Beach will certainly be used regularly and appreciated. I am pleased that the Marine Infrastructure Fund, which was planned for and put in place by the former LNP Government, has allowed for these improvements to boating infrastructure in the Hinchinbrook electorate. I’m particularly pleased to learn that the installation of these floating pontoons will also involve the widening of the existing ramps and should allow the ramps to be used at lower tides, which will provide for even better access to these facilities. The population on Townsville’s Northern Beaches has increased significantly over the last 15 years and it is important that community infrastructure like this is improved to accommodate that growth and maintain the popular lifestyle we enjoy in the area. I understand that works at both sites is due to start Residential, rural and commercial lawns and gardens shortly and should be completed by the end (including school grounds/gardens) Kind Regards of January 2016 Level 2 Sue Blom Sprinkler and irrigation systems only to be used between Councillor Division 1 6pm and 8pm Chair Community & Culture (Odd and evens system applies) Townsville City Council Handheld watering at any time on any day 0427300364 Even houses - Tuesday and Saturday Odd houses - Wednesday and Sunday

Well, we are fast approaching the festive season with only 8 weeks until that big man in the red suit arrives. Let the Christmas cheer begin!! So what’s been happening in Toomulla the last couple of months?? Grass fires; no rain; new residents arriving; still no rain; two new council beach access walkways; people still speeding along Herald Street; the council adopted tighter water restrictions; complaints about barking dogs; a small shower of rain and some lucky Melbourne Cup Sweep winners. Thanks to the fire guys for back burning from Toomulla turnoff. The fire that was burning along the highway could have been a lot worse for Toomulla had they not proceeded with the back burn. Level 2 water restrictions have kicked in, allowing the use of sprinklers between 6-8pm on an Odds and Evens system. Odds apply to Wednesday and Sunday and Evens on Tuesday and Saturday. Level 2 allows hand held watering anytime. Is there anyone out there that could carry out a ‘rain dance’ for us all!! Welcome to the new residents in Toomulla and I hope you enjoy your time here. Toomulla is certainly a beautiful part of paradise. Looking forward to seeing you at our next community event. The Toomulla Beach Community Association Christmas party will be on Saturday 28th November along with the kids Christmas party which will see Santa arriving around 4.30pm. Registration for the kids to receive a present from Santa must be completed, and this can be done by phone - Rhonda 47707813. Mick - 47707007 Margie - 47707087. Otherwise you can email schwarzee1959@gmail.com with the child's full name, age & gender. This will allow us to purchase a well suited gift for each child. There will be a buffet meal served at 6.30pm catered by Magums Catering. Each year the community association subsidise the cost of the Christmas buffet to make it affordable for everyone to attend. The cost for the Buffet Meal will be: $20 (over 12 - adults.) $5 (age 5 - 12.) Bookings are essential and will close on Monday 23rd November. Sorry for any inconvenience…. but…… there are definitely no bookings taken after this date. Toomulla has two new beach access council constructed walkways from Dreamtime Court and also Lady Elliot Court. Both walkways will get you directly onto the beach area. Thank you to Chris Pronk - Townsville City Council Environmental Management Services & Cr. Sue Blom for all your help with the original proposal right through to the nearly completed project and to all the residents who supported this project. A suggestion has been put forward to me to write up a petition, ask people to sign it and send it to Cr Sue Blom. The petition would be requesting that the council put speed bumps or 50 km signs along Herald Street to stop the speedsters who are currently using Herald Street as a drag strip!! I have lost track of how many times that I have written in the Rolly Rag asking for people to slow down. There are a lot of kids on pushbikes now, as well as people walking or riding their bike along Herald Street. Please - SLOW DOWN. Please don’t forget residents, you have four days of free access to Townsville’s landfills during this year’s free dumping long weekend Friday October 30 to Monday November 2 to allow you to clean-up ahead of the next cyclone season. Residents will once again have unlimited free dumping access to dispose of domestic and green waste at the Jensen, Hervey Range, Stuart, Toomulla and Bluewater facilities. Local North Queensland collectors are again in the Museum of Tropical Queensland’s sights. The call is out for local collectors to look deep within their closets and cupboards for objects that could become part of the exhibition Townsville turns 150: The Old and the New. She is looking for objects that show how technology has progressed over the past 150 years including things such as telephones, medical and domestic equipment. Also looking for objects from significant periods during the city’s development such as during the two World Wars. Other categories of objects being sought include children’s toys and games, early Townsville souvenirs and postcards and equipment or material from early local businesses. Ms Moran appreciates the effort and value that these objects hold for their owners, and each item will be treated as carefully as if it were part of the Museum collection for as long as it is on loan to the Museum. People who own objects they think might add to the exhibition should contact Ms Viv Moran directly on (07) 4726 0643 oremail viv.moran@qm.qld.gov.au Tickets are now selling in the Christmas Raffle - Prize: $200 value Christmas Hamper $1 per ticket or 6 for $5. You can get your tickets from Mick Wellington, Don Cummin, Margie Gallagher and Rhonda Schwarz. The table will also be out on weekends at 62 Herald Street with tickets ready to buy. The raffle will be drawn on Friday 18th December……….Good Luck to everyone………...Cheers.Rhonda.

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hello from Rollingstone State School, We had a great finish to last term with our annual beach clean-up. Mr Bruce would like to give a big thank you to our community for the number of people walking the beach with bags and picking up rubbish. The 22kg of rubbish we collected this year was almost half the amount collected two years ago. What about this term? The After School Youth Group had a great camp at Big Crystal Creek. Our school was selected for the trial NAPLAN Science test to be done online. By the time you read this our year six students will have sat for the test which will be used to prepare for NAPLAN on-line next year. Swimming has started on Thursday afternoons at North Shore. What is still to come? Wednesday 28th October at 6:00 pm is our Prep Information Evening. Do you have a child starting prep next year? Do you know someone who has? We would love to meet you and let you know about our wonderful school. Tuesday 3rd November at 9:00 is the start of our TAG-Rolly. TAG stands for Transition Action Group. Don’t you just love Education Acronyms? It is designed to help parents and young children prepare to start school. Check out our promotion below. Wednesdays 4th and 18th November are our Prep Open Mornings. Children starting Prep next year are welcome to join us for a morning in the classroom. Wednesday 11th of November is Remembrance Day. The school will join with the community at the Memorial at Bushy Parker Park for the 11:00 am service. Then the really busy time will start but more of that next time. Stay safe and keep learning.
TAG Rolly is coming Next year, Rollingstone will offer a TRANSITION ACTION GROUP for 3 to 5 year olds to prepare them for school. It will run on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 to 11:00 in the library and the program is designed to prepare children to start school. A parent /grandparent /guardian will need to be able to stay with the child. This year, we are going to run a trial for the last six weeks of term. If you are interested, come along to our Prep Information Evening on Wednesday the 28 th October at 6pm or just turn up on the 3rd November at 9am.

MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB As regular bowlers would know, we have been unable to play for the last few weeks due to a much needed, total, renovation on our green. A huge thank-you goes out to the nine volunteers who donated their time and considerable energy to scarify, core, fertilise and topdress the green over a period of three days. Special thanks to (non bowler) Bob M for spending a whole day coring the green. Resort greenkeeper Greg for his assistance and expertise, and to Hut for saving us a mountain of work with the use of his backhoe. The green is now well on the way to being restored to its former glory and we can all look forward to playing on a much improved surface…….Well done to everyone involved. The break was obviously stressful for a number of our bowlers as first Sunday back we had 21 eager people keen to resume competition. Of these, we were delighted to welcome 5 new bowlers to the club which is a very pleasing addition. On Sunday November 1st, we will again be hosting our annual Pineapple Fours, so unfortunately there will be no social (Barefoot) bowls on that day. We will have a full green of 56 bowlers competing for total prize money of $1000 in this all day event which is always well patronised and enjoyed by affiliated bowlers throughout the Townsville and Ingham districts. The last two months have seen three of our regular bowlers lose beloved parents and to you all, please accept the deepest sympathy from all members of our club. Our thoughts are with each of you. As usual, please direct any enquiries to Phil Small on 0418 779 292…………..Thanks. P 22

We were lucky enough to be part of the Michael Morgan Charter Flight from Townsville to Sydney leaving at 5 am Sunday for the grand final. Whilst we were watching the final of the under 20’s grand final we were approached by two reporters from Channel 9 Wide World of Sport and they wanted to know where we were from, how long we supported the cowboys, who was going to win etc. Half an hour later they came back and asked us would we be happy to do a live interview with Wally Lewis and Yvonne Sampson from Wide World of Sport. We were taken over to the interview desk on the sideline “miked” up and the interview went to air live for some 6 minutes just before the end of the under 20s game. Live to air. Afterwards we received dozens of calls and texts from all over Australia letting us know they had seen the interview. Thought this might be of interest as we were the only ones interview out of the 82000 odd people at the stadium and that we were locals from Balgal Beach of which we made them very aware …..Regards Fred and Paula Gillam Our Grandkids reaction when they saw us on the TV

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc Lions doing what Lions do best The ‘Wheels for Rosie’ are now ready, $5500 has been raised from our local community groups and a matching grant from Lions Australia Foundation to allow Leisure Accessible Inc. to carry out the good work with a brand new trailer. Our District 201Q2 Convention was held in Cairns on Friday 16th to Sunday 18th of October with our 2 VP: Kerrie Cochrane, 3rd VP: Linda Cleaver, Welfare Officer: Jan Holliday and myself in attendance. We have settled back home having made new friends and a better understanding of District and National projects. Our Club Secretary PDG John Muller OAM has been away with duties in WA & SA as National Coordinator- Membership Committee for 3 weeks and returned home on Sunday October 18th At our Dinner meeting on t27th October we had 20 visiting members of the Castle Hill Lions Club to hear an inspiring talk by Lions Irene and Martin Braddick on Lions Eye Health and Lions Inbound Youth Exchange. We would like to see 3 inbound youths placed in the Rollingstone District in 2016. If you would like to know about hosting an overseas youth for 3 weeks with support from our local Lions members, just contact our Club Secretary or myself for details. Santa is making a special visit on Saturday 12th December and the Rural Fires and the Police will give him a tour around Balgal Beach & Mystic Sands in the afternoon. Our Lions will be there too, selling our famous Christmas cakes and puddings -$12 for a 1kg Cake, $16 for a 1.5kg Cake & $12 for a tasty pudding. We must make our preparations for the cyclone season now with a good clean up around our houses and dispose of all that junk that just seems to cuminate without us noticing. We are concerned about those who genuinely do not have access to a trailer or ute or do not have the physical abilities to do a good emu bob around the yard or cannot get up on a ladder to clear the guttering (heavy rain seems a long way off at present but don’t be too complacent). That’s where the yellow shirt department: that’s us...the Lions Club...comes to the rescue. We will help out as an extra pair of hands or two and get the job done for a cup of tea and a lean on your veranda post while we have it. If it is a major clean up that’s required; our members who volunteer their time and their own vehicles would appreciate a donation to cover fuel costs to travel to the Council tip. Just give a phone call, either myself on mobile 0414808483 or our Club Secretary John Muller on 0407114687. While I’m on the subject of volunteers, there are so many opportunities to volunteer in our local Community. Many of our residents do just that but did you know the Community Centre, the Rural Firies, the SES and yes us the Lions Club are all in need of extra hands so if you feel you have a couple of hours to spare or you are looking forward to retiring next year; why not make an early New Year’s resolution to join the army of volunteers that make our Community the little slice of paradise that it is. Kind Regards to you all…...John Holliday…...Club President

Paluma In the Clouds
Well that was the day that was! The morning started with the Markets and Sausage Sizzle which saw a steady stream of visitors, especially early in the day. The weather was fine although very windy and most stallholders had a reasonable day. When it closed at 13.00 hrs the hall had to be transformed for this was the night of the Grand Final. We had had requests earlier in the week from people who were camping at Lake Paluma to show the game on our large screen TV and we agreed to do so. It snowballed ! From the “about 20” we were expecting it became obvious that this was a very conservative estimate and people would be looking for sustenance. From intended small beginnings we found we were running the bar, providing snacks, and then running a full fledged sausage sizzle.... Due to a lack of shopping facilities in Paluma we had to make an inspired guess as to quantities which catered for the 43 adults and about 18 children who turned up. At the finish up there were a a few sausages left, we had run out of XXXX and had not a single savoury plate left. We have to say that the whole group were well behaved and really appreciated the event. Our floor just withstood the stamping at the dramatic finish and our chalkboard on the front of the Community Centre had “Saint Jonathan” scrawled on it soon after the finish. Following the clean-up the PDCA workers heaved a sigh of relief [or elation!] and needed no sleeping pills that night. Thanks to all who helped at the Markets and the Grand Final. It was a day we will not forget anytime soon. Blankets of Love On the weekend from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th October the quilting ladies from this group hired the hall for their annual retreat and scenes of intense activity were to be witnessed throughout the 3 days. Brian O’Leary had updated and extended his Bird show on DVD and was madly burning copies for sale at the History Project. At one stage he was talking to some of the ladies about it and they expressed interest so he got permission to screen it in the hall on Saturday afternoon. Expecting to sell, maybe five, we were rushed with orders and were astounded when we disposed of a full dozen. As he said, they make great christmas presents. Village green The “Green” has been closed from October 19th to November 31st while work is being undertaken by Townsville City Council on replacing the children’s playground and relocating it away from the septic trench from the public toilets and the Community Hall boundary. A section of the “Green” has been barricaded for the past six weeks to prevent entry on to an overflow zone. ……...Les Hyland
Natures Notes - Roy Mackay There are still places in Australia where all the fauna and flora are not all known and so, are not named. At the same time, even areas like Rollingstone/Balgal and Paluma have small plants and animals which are known but not named because we do not know enough about them to differentiate them from their nearest relatives. As mentioned in the last Paluma Turkey Talk we have a common moth which is named but we do not know its caterpillar or the plant that the caterpillar lives on. So, there is still a great need for scientists in all the divisions of natural history to recognise the full life histories of our plants and animals. And now we have the Asian Bee Apis cerana to contend with. If you get the Wildlife Australia magazine, Vol.52 No.3, you will see how introductions, deliberate or by chance, can change the wildlife or plantlife about you for good or bad. Ahem! Quite incidentally, it was my daughter-in-law, Caroline, who wrote that article. Often, because of long term climate change animals and plants change accordingly. That is why some fossil animal and plant fossils are very different from our present species and some have not changed at all. And so we are learning more and more that man's closest living relatives are the Chimpanzee and the Bonobo and relatively speaking, other very close relatives to us, now extinct, were the Neanderthals and several other now extinct species in African, Chinese and Indonesian fossils. Yes, we are all animals. We all join or joined male and female genes to perpetuate our species. It is a shame that we have wars caused by idealism or the supernatural to destroy ourselves………….Roy Mackay

R.S.L. NEWS
Thank you to the RSL members who attended our Quarterly General Meeting on Sunday 18th October. It was pleasing to see we had our youngest service member, Callum Curtis present, along with our oldest service member in Keith Norton. Keith has been a member for a number of years and has endeavoured to attend as many meetings and Ceremonial Days as he possibly can. He had spent many years caring for his virtually bed-ridden wife, Dorothy and now has more time for himself. Despite having a little difficulty with standing, after sitting for a while, Keith remains positive and we look forward to seeing him on Remembrance Day. It is pleasing to have Callum join our club and we are hoping to recruit a few more younger service members. Another familiar face was Jim Kennedy. Lovely to see Jim again, and he too, is aiming to attend our Remembrance Day Service. Ewan Cameron, our president, spoke of Qld RSL’s emphasis on welfare for the members. There are many changes happening and hopefully it will lead to improved facilities and services for past, present and future service personnel. Another new member, Wayne Butler, suggested we ask for a person from DVA to attend one of our general meetings. This occurred following concerns from some of our members re problems they had with DVA. Ewan thought this was an excellent suggestion and will look into it for 2016. Unfortunately one of our members, Rick Dyer, who moved to town just recently, has been hospitalised. Whilst in there he told Ewan he didn’t have a phone to use. Ewan organised a phone, purchased by our Rollingstone RSL. This phone will remain as our RSL property, but will be available to members who find themselves in a similar situation. Rick is unsure as to how long he will be in hospital, but he and Helen will move to a nursing home situation when he leaves hospital. We hope Rick is on the mend and Helen is happy and in good spirits in her lovely unit at Wulguru. Following the meeting, members enjoyed nibblies and a drink or two, whilst catching up with their mates. Thank you to Steve, Vonnie and Sharon for your fine efforts with the food and drinks. Notice I mentioned REMEMBRANCE DAY in the above paragraphs! Please try and attend if you are free. This is a day to remember all of those who have served overseas, or assisted on the home front, to keep Australia a free country. Remembrance Day Service: Wednesday, 11th November at 10:40am at the Memorial at Balgal Beach. Another date to keep in mind is Saturday, 21st of November. We will be having our RSL Christmas Party at the Mystic Sands Golf Club. Treasurer Jan seems to be loosening up with the purse strings in her retirement days and she has said, “We need lots of raffle prizes Rhonda!” So come along for some fine food, fun and friendship. We hope to have the band that we had last year. Their music was well received and added to the atmosphere. Our North Qld District President, Steve Sergeant, will be present and possibly someone from RSL Qld. If possible, we will run the Community bus, as we have done for the past couple of years. A letter will be sent out shortly to all members and hopefully we can have a good turn out again in 2015. One of our committee members, Rod Girvan, has missed a couple of meetings, as well as the QGM. However, it is not due to him being idle, but because he is one of the key members of Bluewater Rural Fire Brigade. The number of fires in our area has been alarming and what is worse, many are deliberately lit, with the culprits not stopping to think of the terrible effects of their actions. So hang in there Rod! Also, Joe, Rob W and Rob T, all RSL members, have been busy assisting with fire-fighting. Well done to those members! Sorry if I have missed anyone. Well had better finish and send as Kerrie requested all articles to be in early, if possible, as she is on her own with this edition. See you at the club on Friday nights and hopefully on Remembrance Day. Take care………………………………………..Cheers, Rhonda C.
