PARCEL COLLECTION SERVICE If anyone in the community would like a parcel picked up in Townsville and delivered to your door on the day our Community Bus goes into town (weekly on Thursdays), just call Chris (855), organise it with her and it will be done. Cost is $5.

Rollingstone Coast Care are starting a new program to remove the pest plants on the Esplanade over the next twelve months.

Every second Monday Morning (two bin week) Interested individuals will gather at 7.30am at the southern end of the Esplanade for a working bee for one hour only, finishing at 8.30am. Please help return the Esplanade to its natural state. Mmmmm!!! Only 1 hour a fortnight? An easy investment in our environment. Call Chris on 47707855 for more details.

PEDESTRIAN ACCESS TO MYSTIC SANDS BEACH As advised by Townsville Council, (see page 6) the only pedestrian access currently available to Mystic Sands Beach is via the “walkway” provided in Augusta Drive between Virginia and Turnberry Courts.

NOTES FROM THE R.T.C THANK YOU BEN First and foremost, THANK YOU Ben, your contribution to the Rollingstone Community Centre has been greatly appreciated over the past 2 ½ years. It has been wonderful to know that the bus was well maintained, and the Ladies and Gents travelling on the bus were well looked after and their needs were accommodated. Love your retirement and freedom.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS is on the 4th of December between 5 & 6 pm with Santa arriving at 6.30pm. The Schools are invited to perform – we also invite anyone in the community who wants to perform to let us know, singers, dancers, lagerphone players – anyone. To support our “Troupies” and their bid for a full sized Basketball Court at the Community Centre an “Old Fashioned Confectionary” stall is being operated at the Christmas Carols as a fundraiser. This is an excellent opportunity to buy some extra Christmas treats or gifts for family and friends or a Secret Santa at work.

2ND ESCO COMMUNITY CONSULTATION meeting Wednesday 2nd November between 6&7pm at the Community Hall. Company representatives will be present to discuss further developments in this proposal and to answer any further questions now there has been time to think since the first meeting.

SUICIDE PREVENTION 1ST WORKSHOP AND 2ND WORKSHOP – Depending on when you received your Rolly Rag you may have missed the first Suicide Prevention Workshop on Saturday 29 October at 9.30am – 11am. There is a second workshop planned for Tuesday 15 November at 9.30am-11am. Refer to the advertisement on the inside cover page.

CHRISTMAS FUNCTION BOOKINGS – The first week of December is filling fast for Christmas Parties and luncheons. Consider now when you are wanting your Christmas function and let me know even if it is booked tentatively. A tentative booking can be cancelled if not required.

COAST CARE – has a new program up and running – every second Monday at 7.30am (two bin weeks) a group will meet at the southern end of the Esplanade, they will be alternating between whipper snipping and spraying the guinea grass as well as general maintenance of already cleared sites. This is a very small band of dedicated people and they can really use a hand.

1 hour a fortnight of work.

GARDEN GROUP – I have a small list of people interested in forming a Garden Group, I am still taking names call to 47704855. There are some interesting suggestions for the group in the wind cannot foreclose just as yet.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 11 NOV 2016 – at the Cenotaph at Balgal Beach – it is our day to remember our fallen War Heroes. Presented by the Rollingstone RSL Sub Branch and is always a very moving ceremony.

CYCLONE PREPAREDNESS MEETING – New to the area? Want to know a little more about how to prepare for a wet season or a cyclone up here in Rollingstone? We are looking to present a Storm Season preparedness talk. More information about this when it comes to hand.

MY HEALTH RECORD – Do you know what a My Health Record means – not many of us do. As you may be aware, in June 2016, over 580,000 My Health Records were created for North Queensland residents as part of the Australian Government’s trial to increase participation in this important national digital health initiative. My Health Record is a secure digital record that contains a summary of important health information about an individual, such as any existing allergies, medical conditions, treatments and current medications. This information is accessed by the individual and their authorised healthcare providers.

We are offering 2 information sessions to learn more about this Government Service; how to access it and what it can do for us. The information sessions have been organised for Wednesday 14 December at 12.15pm and again at 6pm on the same day. There is no need to book however it would be nice to know someone is coming along. Bob Holt has had a rough month just gone, but is now coming along nicely. Thinking of both he and Judy and wishing them all good things. We’ll do it again next year around May, and hope for a better attendance.  We have had some Expressions of Interest in a Garden Group, Chris has a small list of names already and there are some exciting seeds of ideas coming. Absolutely no Expressions of Interest for the formation of a Men’s Group. We’ll now let it go and leave it with the community to do its own thing.  Please mark Sunday, December 4th on your calendars to bring the kidlets along to CAROLS at the Community Centre – 5.30/6.00pm start. PUBLIC PEDESTRIAN ACCESS TO MYSTIC SANDS BEACH Council manages public pedestrian access to beaches throughout the Townsville Local Government Area across 32km of residential beach frontage and 78 paths.

Public pedestrian beach access is provided to the Mystic Sands Beach at a location central to the community indicated in the attached diagram, with a public car park provided.

Coastlines change all the time. The section of foreshore off the end of Borton St was a beach for a small period of time pre 2006 and council provided a public pedestrian access path there made of bollards and plastic coated wire. This has long since eroded away.

The section of foreshore off the end of Borton St is currently the bank of a creek and no longer a beach and has been so since 2006. There is no suitable pedestrian access to the beach via the end of Borton Street at this time.

Gidday Rollingstone WE HAVE EFTPOS!!!! Exciting huh?!?! You can’t get cash out or stuff like that, but you can pay regos and weapons licenses and all the usual stuff, just like before – only this time, using the latest in white man magic – EFTPOS!!!! I haven’t actually touched it yet but Christine tells me it’s quick and easy and that Sutto and I probably couldn’t stuff it up, even if we tried and it’s not scary at all… but just to be sure, remember that Christine’s office hours are Monday to Thursday, 9.30am till 2pm.

Melbourne was great – thanks for asking. I’m still not convinced that there was supposed to be a city built there… ever. It’s an awesome place – loved the cafes, the restaurants, millions of places to go and see and some of my best mates are Mexicans… I’d even go back for another visit tomorrow – but it’s cold – ridiculously cold – and windy and wet… and cold. Personally, I think that the clown who once said, “Hey, this would be a great place to build a town. You guys should all move here and settle down” – has since moved to the Gold Coast and spent the rest of his life chuckling to himself and sipping a cold beer in the sunshine.

We’re getting a lot of intel emails through from Brisbane, warning us about scams – the clever tricks that some ratbag computer boffins play on unsuspecting and innocent internet and mobile phone users. Unfortunately, some of these scams are pretty convincing and can pretend to be anything from EBay, Telstra, Optus and any of the banks, right through to the Australian Tax Office. It’s a sad indictment on society as a whole, that we now live in a world where this is becoming commonplace – where being able to trust someone is almost the exception rather than the rule.

Your personal security and safety and that of your family, is still your responsibility – locking your house and your car – knowing where your kids are and who they’re with – being aware of what goes on around you and who your family are exposed to. That responsibility should also extend to your personal affairs – your cash, credit cards, accounts, tax and especially your identification – any and all personal information about you or your family should be checked, secured and protected. Even the photographs you post online (like Facebook or Instagram) can be stolen and misused. Did you realise that once you’ve posted a photograph online, you no longer have any control over it – even if it’s only on there for minutes before you take it down, a digital copy of that image remains in ‘cyberspace’ and be accessed.

My advice is to think very carefully about what you have and what measures you’ve taken to keep it safe.

Sutto mentioned the roadworks in last month’s Rag – and we’ve had a few calls about it since then. Yes… it’s slow. Yes… it’s a pain in the backside. Yes… its seems to be taking forever. No… sometimes I can’t figure out what they’re doing either. Mid 2017 is what we’ve been told and until then the speed limits will be all over the place like a mad woman’s breakfast – depending on where their main work site is. The bottom line is exactly what Sutto said… watch for those speed signs and toe the line with them – traffic coppers from Townsville and Ingham are on the hunt for anyone who doesn’t pay attention.

A special ‘Hello’ to all the lovely people who’ve been pulled over at our RBT sites over the past few months. It’s always nice to see your happy, smiling faces. It’s even nice to see the ones who roll their eyes, the one who break into a sweat, the ones who breathe a sigh of relief that they’re in the passenger seat and the ones who still think they can bugger up the machine by sucking through the straw instead of blowing. Remember, we’re not there to give you grief, UNLESS you’ve been drinking or attract our attention for all the wrong reasons.

I did a breath test other day on a Japanese bloke, here on holidays. His wife was so excited by the whole show, she wanted a photo of hubby blowing into the machine. She held up the camera, he put his laughing gear around the straw and I pulled the best “smile for the gumby tourist” face I could muster. I expect to hit super-star status in downtown Tokyo later this month.

Rollingstone & District Seniors Things have quietened down for a few weeks but that is going to stop as we have the Christmas season looming down on us.

After weeks of being very ill, Gwen has finally been diagnosed with pneumonia and a collapsed lung. She is very lucky that she avoided being hospitalized. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Bob Holt is in hospital, heaven help those nurses and Len Clark has just had surgery so our best wishes go out to those two (and also to their long suffering spouses).

The people who went to the sky show enjoyed it, you always get a few moans but that is human nature they tell me. Growing up on a military air base, planes don’t do very much for me but I did go and see the air show many years ago. Great for Townsville and area.

There is a Tribute to Shirley Bassey at Civic theatre on 22-23rd November. If interested in attending, please check with Rhonda M. There are notices on the board and at the RTC regarding the Orphans Melbourne Cup. It is being held at the hall and is a BYO which includes a plate of finger food to share. The cost of $2 is to cover the hall hire and there will be sweeps etc. This is a very informal get together instead of sitting at home alone watching the race we can join with others and have a good time.

The Seniors Christmas Luncheon is being held at the Hall Friday 9 th December. The cut off point for numbers and payment will be November 30th. This will allow time for catering numbers. It will be a cold buffet, desserts, punch and you can byo spirits if required.

There will be wine offered. The cost is $10 pp. A select few will be doing the work so the rest can come along and enjoy without having to do anything. This has been the major complaint this year so the Committee hope we have rectified it. Here’s hoping.

Bingo will have the last game for this year on November 12 th as we want to give people time to prepare for Christmas. Hope to see a good crowd along.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. My three dear readers will be absolutely delighted to hear that this article will be quite brief (hurrah they all chorus) as I will be away on holidays for most of the month.

After the AGM, our end of month Club BBQ was held with Robert dazzling all comers with his culinary skills and again, because of the feast he has been presenting each month, we have found that a sweets course is unnecessary apart from the Kids who receive ice creams and icy poles. Thanks Robert for another wonderful job in satisfying the multitude of diners. Thanks to Col Pace for the rissoles, Di, Therese, Kellie and Sue for the wonderful salads that drew many favourable comments.

This month there were no Club Monthly Fishing Competition prizes to award as not one fish was weighed in during August although we know some were caught. It only takes a couple of minutes to attend The Landing with your bag full and the lovely ladies at The Landing will do the rest. Fellas, do it while your good lady cleans the boat! There are good monthly prizes up for grabs so get into the swing of this competition and create some well, dare I say, "competition".

Because of a lack of fishing in our Club, a new Committee Position has been created by President Di to address this issue. It was felt that we were becoming more of a social club with less emphasis on the fishing but that has been addressed by the election of Dan Dale who will oversee all things fishing on behalf of the Committee. We extend a warm welcome to Dan and wish him every success in his new position which is a bit alien to his old Markets position. No doubt Dan will be canvassing all our members for your ideas so please give him every support as, after all, you will benefit from it in the long term.

October is looming up to be a quiet time in our Club mainly due to the number of Club and Committee Members overseas on separate holidays to Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. However, the end of month BBQ on Friday 28 October will still be held so please feel free to attend for another wonderful night out and, financial Club Members, it is Free! The Free Kids First Aid Course is still scheduled to be run at our Club Balgal Beach Markets on Saturday 5 November so be sure to come down with your Children and learn some very important stuff which one day may just save a life.

Full details of the Closed (no friends or visitors) Club Fun Weekend Away to Lucinda on 25th to 27th November are on the board at The Landing. Please put your name on this list for catering purposes as the rule is no name, no food! Also book and pay for your accommodation at The Wanderers Resort but be sure to mention you are with our Club.

It is always a popular and great relaxing weekend away so why not come along and join in the fun. Perhaps even do a spot of fishing or cruise the beautiful waterways around Lucinda.

I have not been advised of any of our Members currently being on the sick list which is great news although Kerry Corchrane is, I believe, a little unwell from guilt as rumour has it that KC has still not snagged a fish; any fish big or small.

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News The Club’s October BBQ was enjoyed by those members who attended as some were away and others not so well. As always the cooks did a great job with the fish and sausages and likewise, the ladies with the salads, potato bakes etc. A very big thank you was relayed by President Faye.

The Golfing Teams showed their putting ‘SKILLS’ , as ‘SKILLS’ go, but it appears everyone enjoyed themselves going by the laughter and cheering. The successful Team won by just one point so it was a close

competition. Congratulations team for a top game.

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc I apologise for missing last month’s edition, I had a bout of the dreaded flu.

This has been a reasonably busy month for our club, with the Bunnings sausage sizzle and catering support for the car boot sale.

We have commenced cleaning up the Balgal Beach Nursery for Elaine Finn due to ongoing health issues with John. This is a fairly big project, however, I have had volunteers not only from our club, but outside help. I would however love to make contact with people who own brush cutters to maybe give a hand to clear down the back of the nursery. If there are any volunteers, please contact me. This is a very worthwhile project helping 2 of our own.

We have had a few furniture removal jobs within the community and rubbish runs.

The club welcomes four new members, firstly, the newlyweds, Dave & Linda Birse, Vincente Lopez and Leslie Reardon. These lovely people will be inducted at our next dinner meeting.

We are preparing for some large catering tasks coming up: The Bluewater fete on 28th October and The North Qld Caravan Club Xmas Party on the 18th November, followed by the Rollingstone Rocks Car Show at the Big 4 caravan Park on the weekend of 25, 26 & 27th November. This is going to be a mammoth event.

Our district convention is being held in Ingham on the weekend of 11, 12 & 13th November.

CENTENNIAL LEGACY CELEBRATION Lions Clubs International was formed in Chicago, USA in 1917, and as over 1.4 million Lions in over 46,000 Lions Clubs around the world celebrate their Centenary of Service, all of them have been encouraged to provide a lasting legacy to mark their commitment to their local community.

The Rollingstone And District Lions Club have enthusiastically been supporting their local area for more than 10 years, and have provided significant Service to many local projects and activities over this time, including commencing the annual Rollingstone Australia Day Awards and the Rollingstone Pineapple Festival. Art Exhibition: The Art Exhibition held over 7 days in September produced a quite eclectic collection of art ; not just paintings, but sculptures and a few photographs. Artists from Mission Beach, Mt Fox, Ingham, Paluma, Rollingstone and Townsville participated and the People’s Choice award was won by Suzanne Job with her “Birdwing Caterpillar”. We reckon that some 200 people visited the display, some days being well attended others quite small.

Notwithstanding this there were a few works sold and overall the event was quite successful. Thanks to all who visited.

Paluma Pick: The Melbourne Cup is only a couple of weeks away and for many years in Paluma we have held our own Horse race evening on the Saturday before the race in Victoria. This year it falls on Saturday 29th October. So come all you punters for dinner in the Community Hall at 18.30 hrs on the usual bring a plate to share basis. Bring a few spare dollars for a horse in the Paluma style race and a few more for a drink or two or three at the Bar. If you have racing colours or any version of the style do wear it. The winners of the Garden Competition, which was judged on October 18th, will be announced and prizes presented on the night.

Plant Identification Course: A Rainforest Plant Identification Course will be held in Paluma from 25 to 27 November, commencing with Dinner at the JCU House on the evening of the 24th. The course takes from 08.30hrs to 16.00hrs on the three days and costs $670 with accommodation and $500 without. PRFB AGM: Notice has been posted on the Community Hall advising that the Paluma Rural Fire Brigade AGM and Levy Meeting will be held in the Community Hall on Saturday 5th November at 17.00 hrs. The meeting is open to the public as it will set the Levy paid by ratepayers for the coming year. It is proposed that the Levy remains unchanged. The AGM will elect the officers for the coming year.

Garden Competition: The PDCA have again gained sponsorship from Bunnings for the Annual Garden Competition. The judging took place on October 18th and as Bunning’s staff were not available this year to judge the competition we were fortunate to obtain the services of Linda Rabane and Natalie Pace to inspect the gardens in the Village & 5acre blocks. Winners are to be be announced at the social on 29th October.

Foot Race: Outer Limits Adventure will conduct three races on Sunday 30th October starting from the Village Green. There are three courses 20km 08.00hrs 10km 08.30 hrs and 6 km 09.00 hrs start. A large crowd are expected and parking in the village will be at premium. Be aware of increased traffic.

Natures Notes - Roy Mackay Spring has a arrived, migrant birds are either on their way in to our rainforests or leaving it to go south. Snakes and lizards and frogs are more obvious and mosquitoes are very obvious. On the plants side, very obvious are the blooms of our flower gardens and our forests are coming into bloom. It is a great time of year. It is getting warmer, bird-watchers are having a great time, snake-catchers are getting ready to take care of reptiles that invade private homes and gardens, It is a wonderful time for all who study nature.

The Klumpp family were just leaving their house in Paluma the other day when I stopped to talk to them. They showed me a photo of a Boyd’s Forest Dragon (Diporifera boydi) which they found in their backyard. This amazed me as I knew of only two other places in our area where this species existed – on the banks of the Paluma Dam and on a ridge crossed by the road to the dam. But to find one of these lizards in a Paluma backyard is amazing, Do they occur in your rainforest areas?

Snake-catchers in your area could probably supply you with lists of snakes, lizards and frogs found in the Rollingstone/ Balgal area. Ask them. You have such a variety of habitats including the mangroves and beaches. The lists should be long.

Thank goodness we have not had as many dry season fires this past few months as we have had in the previous few years. Our wildlife has had a chance to breed up again. The next few months will tell us if we see more fauna than in the past few years. I miss seeing several mammal species on the road up to Paluma at night, Last night I didn’t see one mammal or reptile.

R.S.L. NEWS At the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month we will remember them. So if you are free please make an effort to attend our service for Remembrance Day. The service commences at 10:40am to enable us to be ready for the minutes silence at 11am. It is on a Friday this year and we will again be supported by the RAAF with a Catafalque Party, guest speaker and two flag orderlies. The RAAF always look so smart in their uniforms and go to great effort to attend our commemorative services, so please try to be there and show your respect for those presently serving our country. Venue: Rollingstone RSL Memorial at Balgal Beach.

Following the service we will adjourn to the Mystic Sands Golf Club for refreshments. As it is a Friday you may like to purchase a Goose Club number, as presently our jackpot has risen to $500. I am always wary about discussing the jackpot as it often goes off after I have made a comment in the Rolly Rag. However, even when it does go off it begins again at $200, which would be nice to win.

As Ewan noted, Mick and I were away for the October news, and I would like thank Ewan for doing the article. Our trip to America was wonderful and we saw so many sights and learnt so much. The American people were friendly and helpful and we loved the southern accent when in North and South Carolina and Georgia.

From an RSL perspective, Arlington National Cemetery and the Vietnam Veterans’ Wall in Washington, were places we definitely wished to see. I remember friends returning from Washington a number of years ago and commenting on how powerful it was to se e the Wall and know that all of those names were Americans who had died as a result of the Vietnam War. Mick left one of our Long Tan badges there and we were told the items are collected each day and eventually a museum relating to the Vietnam War will probably be built nearby. A commemorative area for the Korean War and also a statue of Abraham Lincoln are in the vicinity so this is an area not to be missed if you go to Washington and are into history. A museum relating to Gettysburg and the battlefields are also other highlights from our trip. Ah, I digress, better get back onto RSL News.

Our RSL Christmas Party will be on Saturday, December 3rd. At this stage we hope it will be at the golf club, but we need to check with the receivers as to the club staying open for longer hours. We also need to check the availability of the hall if we can’t use the golf club. Members will be notified as soon as a decision is made. You will receive notification in your letterbox, by post or email with details.

One of our members, Robbie Eade, is currently riding around Australia on a trike, with the aim of laying a flag in the home town of every Australian service person who has died since the Vietnam War. This is a project he derived and has given him something to aim for in life. He is accompanied by his red heeler, who enjoys travelling and meeting different people. He began in WA and then went to SA where he has been held up with the weather and running repairs on his trike. He regularly sends photos of his trip and I will endeavour to put one in my December article.

It is that time of the year and I do not mean that Xmas is coming. It is the time of year when all the creatures large and small are moving, breeding, feeding and all those things that go along with nature. I had brought into care a very small "greater glider" which was found way up behind Paluma, it only weighed 27grms so the chances of it surviving was very small These are some of the issues we are trained to deal with.

At this time of year the snakes are on the move, they are looking for food, shelter and a mate. The best thing to do if you have a snake in the yard is put any animals away, bring in pet birds and close doors and windows so it can't get inside. Nine times out of ten the snake will be long gone by the morning. If you do find a snake inside, close the room they are in, seal under the door with a towel or similar and ring a snake catcher. Wildlife carers are volunteers and most snake catchers charge so it is worth your while to isolate the snake to make their job easier.

Baby birds are literally falling out of the sky and our carers are inundated with them at the moment. Many carers have a limit on the amount they can have at any given time, so it is in the birds best interest for the public to try and reunite the baby with the parents if possible or give the bird a chance to regain its strength if it is just exhausted.

It is the start of the kangaroo season also but with the dry weather, we hope that most females will hold off breeding until the rain comes.

25 YEARS OF SERVICE RECOGNISED I recently had the pleasure of presenting Ken Belgrove of Bushland Beach with a certificate in recognition of his 25 years of service to the community as a Justice of the Peace. Ken is a builder by trade who worked for the Queensland Housing Commission, QBuild and the former Building Services Authority on the Sunshine Coast, in Mount Isa and in Townsville during his career.

In recent years, Ken has worked for James Cook University until going into semi-retirement at Bushland Beach in 2013. Since then Ken has continued to do pool and building inspections. I'd like to thank Ken for volunteering as a Justice of the Peace over the last 25 years. Our community is fortunate to have many people like Ken who are willing to provide this service.

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF TROPICAL HEALTH AND MEDICINE – AN LNP PROJECT I was delighted to attend the recent official opening of the new Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine facility at James Cook University in Townsville. This is a fantastic asset to North Queensland. Facilities are also being constructed in Cairns and in the Torres Strait, making the AITHM well positioned to make a great contribution to research and innovation in the area of public health and medicine in the tropics and I’m certain that it will do just that.

The former Abbott LNP Government contributed $42 million to this project in August 2013. Of course, this matched the $42 million commitment the former Queensland LNP Government had made in December 2012. As a North Queensland based Minister in the former LNP Government, I was very pleased and proud to see the results of our investment providing a base for cutting edge scientific and health research that will benefit our community for generations.

TOWNSVILLE RING ROAD STAGE 4 - ANOTHER LNP PROJECT Stage 4 of the Townsville Ring Road was a project delivered and funded by the former LNP Government. This significant upgrade of the major arterial road network on the northern side of Townsville will be a great asset to the travelling public using this road and residents living in communities on Townsville’s Northern Beaches.

I know traffic disruptions during the construction period can be frustrating, but it will be worth it. A recent community open day allowed the public to inspect the progress that has been made on the Townsville Ring Road Stage 4 project. I’m proud to have been a member of the former LNP Government that delivered and funded this great project for Townsville.
