Rollingstone State School
Residents will have an extra day of free dumping during Townsville’s annual pre-cyclone season spring clean which will run for four days from Friday, October 30 to Monday November 2. Residents will once again have unlimited free dumping access to dispose of domestic and green waste at the Jensen, Hervey Range, Stuart, Toomulla and Bluewater facilities as well as Magnetic Island
Thanks to everyone who has dropped off, made and grown items for our P&C Produce stall at this years Pineapple Festival. The funds we raise on the day will go a long way in supporting the Rollingstone Students ability to attend swimming lessons this year, so every donation from the community is greatly appreciated.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the raffle for the local Wildlife Carers. We would like to share with you how we are using the funds. After much consideration, it was decided the best use for the money raised was for medical supplies. We are used to handling the milk mixes, the pellets and day to day food but the medicinal part can get very expensive. Our main list is: Vitrate, worming medicine, Betadine, Slippery Elm, Impact, Nilstat, skin repair cream, Sorbelene, medicine for Coccidia, Cefaclor, Critter care, Rescue remedy, diarrhoea medicine and Vitamin E. These things we really need to have on hand. Some medications are used daily and others just when needed, but we always strive to have a medicine chest with up dated medicine without racing into town to purchase things when we are busy caring for these animals. Now we just need something to put them all in, a medicine chest! We the Wildlife Carers of this area thankyou all very much for your support.

La Luna Workshops – The first Dance Workshop at the time of writing this is yet to be presented. By the number of bookings, this will be a wonderful workshop. The Circus Workshop is scheduled for 10am Thursday 1 st October Flip’n’Trick – Join the fun of this circus play-based class. You will be challenged through a circus circuit, group play and games. Hula Hoop, spin plates, twirl poi, juggle and learn to use other circus manipulation toys. Booking is essential as there are only a few spaces left. 47707855 Drum Circle – The first 20mins will be a drumming workshop, learning techniques to be used in the Drum Circle after the workshop. The Workshop starts at 10am for 20 minutes and is open to 20 participants (booking is essential to secure you place), the Drum Circle starting at 10.20am is open to all interested participants. Car Boot Sale – The Community Centre is holding a Car Boot Sale on Saturday 24 October from 9 ‘til noon. If it can fit in your car, truck or trailer and you want to sell it, come along. No seller fees – you sell it you keep the cash. Call 47707855 for more information. Christmas is just around the corner – time to think about Christmas Carols. Carols is being held on Sunday 6 December this year starting at 6pm. We invite anyone who wants to participate to tune up those vocal chords – shine your shoes and get your costumes out of mothballs. Planning will start soon. The Snake Presentation A big thank you to John and Bronwyn Rathbone (Sorry if I have renamed you Bronwyn) and Gavin Kriesal and his daughter. John has so much knowledge about snakes, their habits, consequences from snake bite and treatment, he is amazing. Gavin’s ability to handle dangerous animals was something to admire, while watching Gavin set up and close down his display. One thing I did take away from the workshop is that while we have some of the most poisonous snakes in Australia, the venom does not have the same effect on muscle and skin as other snakes in other countries. The 30 people who attended the workshop, up here at Rollingstone, very much appreciated your time and expertise, especially being a Sunday. John says he is putting together a workshop on stingers in the near future and is willing to share this knowledge with us also. Watch this space. Pineapple Festival – WOW what a day – estimates suggest that between 3500 and 4000 people came to our humble little festival. Food sold out – drinks sold out. The RaDCA Tearoom sold out. FC’s Coffee ran out of milk. A big standing ovation to the Organising Committee – Big Thanks to NQ Paradise Pines for approaching their sponsors and providing the musical entertainment, the roving acrobats, posters and printed schedules of events as well as bringing the digital technology to the festival organisation with a website and facebook page. Check out the Rollingstone Festival Webpage at http://www.rollingstonefestival.com.au/ and the Rollingstone & District Community Association facebook page for photos of the day. The Pineapple Festival is a community event – please, if you have any ideas, no matter how big or small, the organising committee would love to hear from you – or better still have a think about sitting on the committee next year. Someone, I would like to thank personally, is my laminator extraordinaire, who took on the task with such enthusiasm – Thank you – you know who you are. “What we do, determines how we feel! – Not what others do; Not what the world does or did; Not what we did in the past!” As always – take care…….Chris

The Community Association AGM was poorly attended – due to complacency, indifference/apathy, satisfaction? Who knows? Subsequently, the same Committee members were returned, so best we just get on with it...............again. Seems like when there’re no dramas then no-one’s really interested. BUT, make one error/slip-up/honest mistake and the piranhas’ll getcha!! What a truly wonderful event the 2015 Rollingstone Pineapple Festival was: the weather was superb, the entertainment/activities obviously the same and the crowd close to 4000. What more could our little township ask for? Huge congratulations to all involved in making the day such a success. I can’t let this opportunity go by without thanking the women who helped me in the Community Association Tearoom: Carol, Joan, Bernice, Cheryl, Michelle and Wendy. What treasures they are; and their contribution and abilities made the “Tearoom” a great success for the Pineapple Festival Committee. Looking forward to the Drum Circle and La Luna activities during the school holidays, and hoping to see lots of kids in attendance. Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”.

More days proposed for annual free dumping weekend Residents will have four days of free access to Townsville’s landfills during this year’s free dumping long weekend to clean-up ahead of the next cyclone season. Townsville Water and Waste Committee today endorsed a staff report recommending the event be held from Friday, October 30 to Monday, November 2 to coincide with Cyclone Sunday (November 1). The timing of the event will also better fit in with upgrade works at the Hervey Range landfill and the completion of the Magnetic Island Waste Facility and for the first time will be extended over four days instead of the usual three. Residents will once again have unlimited free dumping access to dispose of domestic and green waste at the Jensen, Hervey Range, Stuart, Toomulla and Bluewater facilities as well as Magnetic Island. Committee chairman Cr Ray Gartrell said the four-days of free dumping was a prime opportunity to clean up the yard ahead of the cyclone season. “The weekend is the one time of year when we throw the gates open at the landfills to give residents the opportunity to clean up around their yards and homes ahead of the cyclone season and make as many trips to the tip as they need,” Cr Gartrell said. “This year’s event has been put back slightly this year to a time slot that will provide the public with full access to the city’s landfills, and in particular to the Hervey Range facility which is undergoing an upgrade. “While it won’t be on the traditional public holiday weekend, the free dumping will be extended out over four days instead of the usual three to give residents a greater range of choices.

Gidday Rollingstone, So here I sit, late for the Rolly Rag deadline… AGAIN, school holiday TV mumbling along in the background… AGAIN, and an amateur terrorist plotting my untimely demise if I point a camera at her... AGAIN. I’ve actually taken this week off (go on… say it… “WHAT… on holidays… AGAIN!!”) - partly because of the school holidays but partly just to let the dust settle a bit. It’s been a busy few weeks for one reason and another - a few trips to Brisbane - a family funeral - doctors - physios - more doctors – an MRI scan and now waiting for a call from a specialist about some surgery (never, NEVER tear a tendon in your elbow – no fun.) I’m back at work next week but Shaun (the Sheep) SUTTON will still be doing the bulk of the jobs for the next few months until I can get a straight answer from the medicos about this arm. Now, let’s catch up. Sutto and Jen seem to be settling in very nicely – all light switches located and accounted for and no complaints forthcoming from anywhere. The Pineapple Festival – a great success and a credit to this community – but you weren’t expecting me to say anything else were you? In all sincerity, there were people who came up to the police tent, JUST to say what a great event the Festival was – why they wanted to tell us, is anybody’s guess, but they obviously felt it was necessary to give it the thumbs up. Horses on the Highway – a hot topic at the minute. The QPS and the Townsville Council have had a meeting with Federal and State representatives and officers from National Parks. This is a work in progress and there are a few plans that have to be addressed and researched before they can be implemented. At the end of the day, my advice is pretty straight forward – please pay attention when you’re on the highway, especially at night – drive to the conditions AND don’t drive tired. You won’t get extra “brownie points” for getting there a few minutes early – I’d rather have you arrive a few minutes late and alive than not arrive at all. Traffic stuff – read the last few lines of the paragraph above – the advice is basically the same. We’ve been blessed with relatively few traffic accidents so far and certainly nothing too major. You can’t control how other people act or react on the highway – just how you act and how you deal with what happens. Terrorism – mostly domestic as opposed to community based – at least for the next 2 weeks until school goes back and they start to plot as a group again. A more direct and definitive approach to control the threat could be taken if they didn’t display moments of affection and “cuteness”. It’s difficult to instigate interrogation and torture techniques after you’ve just read a bedtime story and the subject is snuggled under your arm, fast asleep. And there you go… all caught up. There are probably a dozen or more things to talk about but I’ve already stretched the friendship with the editors and fielded two phone calls asking for the article. Remember, I’m basically office bound for the next ‘God knows how long’ – come up and say gidday, bring cake or Tim Tams (don’t tell Al) and give me all the good “goss”…………...Stay Safe Goughy

Rollingstone & District Seniors Recently two of our seniors visited Gail Blackley at the Mater Hospital. Gail looked frail but seemed to be holding up well and was eager for news about Rollingstone. We told her about all that had been going on and made her laugh a lot which was good for her. Seniors' Sports Day was a huge success with our friends from Bluewater attending together with a large contingent from Forrest Beach. Forest Beach are now looking forward to next year's event so they informed us. It was so good to see all our old friends again and the sports we played caused much laughter and enjoyment. A big thank you to Merle Dickinson for organising the events and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. On arrival our guests sat down for a delicious morning tea, then we played our games and finished up with a delicious lunch. All in all, it was an extremely pleasant time and a big thank you to everyone involved with the preparation of the tables, the catering and generally seeing everything went according to plan. I am reliably informed the Pineapple Festival was a swinging affair, with a huge crowd in attendance and lots of stalls. Pleased to hear the Seniors Stall did well and many thanks to all who contributed cakes etc. 'Til next month take care of each other ……. Claire

Wildlife Therapy Recently I had my elderly Father staying with me and he got a big kick out of helping me feed my baby possums. This took his mind off his problems and made him smile and focus on the little ones so desperately needing support! Now that he has returned South, these babies have become part of his family and I now have to keep him informed of their every development and photos are a must. He really was so taken by these babies, it was amazing and wonderful to watch and share with him. Sadly we loose some of our babies as you can see from the photo, we get some really young ones and this can be a hard part of the voluntary work we all do. But let me say that being a Carer has rewards in ways we never think of! As noted earlier in the “Rag” , we Wildlife Carers thankyou for purchasing raffle tickets at The Pineapple Festival as every little bit helps us in supporting our broken and damaged wildlife. There are so many things that are needed and we will be doing more raffles from time to time as well as asking for anyone who has spare blankets or sheets. We are also looking for a few people who can sew to make up our “pouches” . Please speak to us if you can help with this as we have a template to use. We also need things like fruits, apples etc and even everyday things like toilet paper where we go through huge amounts for the animals in intensive care. P13 If you can help in any way please contact one of the above numbers or look out for our future raffles and collection bin!
Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News CULTURAL FESTIVAL G.Day All, Our members who travelled to the Cultural Fest in the Rolly Bus had a great time, it was excellent. Entertainment scored 10 out of 10. The food was beautiful with such a variety to be had. We tried it all. YUM. The company was tops too. We also went to the Garden Show at Riverway on the way to the Cultural Fest. There was a lot of garden stuff to see including some very beautiful orchids. It was a very good show. We arrived back home to Rollingstone at 10.30 pm after an excellent day. Our Fathers Day Celebrations at Ken Turners place went off well with about fiftyfive attending. We played Back Yard Cricket while others played Saggy Balls with both activities creating lots of laughter. Judyana and Greg provided us with lots of beautiful music, and songs that we all knew. Nothing but good comments from the crowd and lots of applause. A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO YOU BOTH. We dined on soup, stew and sweets in a big circle around the fire. Thank you to all who cooked such a wonderful meal. LOTS OF IT. John Price was given the honour of cutting the Fathers Day Cake. Thanks John. You deserve the honour. Our annual GHOST RIDE through the bush was exciting with a ghost firing a cracker gun and spooking all on board. The pesky ghost followed up with a water pistol as well. All on board got a real fright. Screams and laughter from everybody. Ken Dickenson won fisherman of the year and Merle Dickenson won the annual Lynn O’Kane trophy. The LOUNDS FRESH SEAFOOD RAFFLES were won by Faye Thompson and Cheryl Pearson. They are very yummy prizes to win. Col and Anne have the best seafood in Townsville and are great supporters of our club; and have been over many years. Our next BBQ has been cancelled due to the football finals and will be held on the following Sunday 11th Octoberber at The Community Hall. Guests are always welcome. Member’s meals are free, visitors $10 and children free. Our next bus outing is to the Greek Fest at Riverway on the 10 th of October. Kindest regards from your Committee.

ROLLINGSTONE PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL On Saturday 12 September, I attended the Rollingstone Pineapple Festival with Noeline Ikin, LNP Candidate for Kennedy and Senator James McGrath, LNP Senator for Queensland. It's always great to welcome guests and visitors to the electorate. It was a great day out, with lots of families in attendance. James, Noeline and I judged the floats in the Pineapple Festival Parade, Noeline and I judged the pineapple desert cooking competition. Thanks to James and Noeline for visiting Rollingstone. BLUEWATER COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION AGM On Sunday 6 September, I attended the Annual General Meeting of the Bluewater Community Association, at the Community Hall in Bluewater. Thanks to the outgoing committee and congratulations to the incoming committee. Good luck for the coming year. STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS ON BRUMBIES I'm still waiting for a reply from Environment Minister, after I raised safety concerns about the number of brumbies on the Bruce Highway and local roads on Townsville’s Northern Beaches. A number of constituents have contacted me about the issue and a report in the Townsville Bulletin suggests the Queensland Government is in discussions with Townsville City Council. These brumbies are obviously moving around more as a result of the prolonged dry weather looking for food and water. This is not a new issue – we’ve encountered this problem before in recent years when there was an extended period of dry weather and we were able to address it with a passive trapping and rehabilitation program for the brumbies in Clement State Forest. ROLLINGSTONE SENIORS SPORTS DAY On Tuesday 8 September, I attended the Rollingstone Seniors Sports Day at the Rollingstone Community Centre. There was a good crowd in attendance, with Seniors attending from as far south as Toolakea and from as far north as Forrest Beach. There were eight different games and activities. It was a great day for this group of active seniors. Congratulations to the organisers

Hello to all! Another month has flown by and when you read this we will be 13 weeks out from Christmas. Where has the year gone again? Congratulations to all involved in making the Pineapple festival another roaring success. I do apologise for not being there but Councillor Tony Parson and the Mayor, Jenny Hill had a great day, so you were well represented. I have sent an update on the Bridge project and things are moving along, unfortunately slowly but we are heading in the right direction and the project is on track to start later this year. Over the weekend I attended the offical opening of the Northern Beaches Aquatic Centre with the new slides. What a hit the Northern Beaches pool was with compliments from all over the city. In the past 8 years I have seen us grow from strength to strength and this is a credit to us all. Our children no longer have to go to town for jobs as we have them in our area, a far cry from when my kids were growing up. We now have so many choices for dining out with the addition of Pizza Capers at Woodlands. The Bushland Beach Fish and Chip shop has recently just won the Best Fish and Chips in Townsville through a radio competition. Yes, we have come of age. The people I spoke with at the pool event were really amazed at what the Northern Beaches has to offer! Something we all have known for a very long time and it keeps on getting better. I hope you have a great month, catch some fish, read a book or just enjoy life because all too soon we turn around and we are too tired to enjoy! See you during the month, ring and say hello or drop me an email with your concerns.

Rollingstone Pineapple Festival Committee Chair Wow - What a successful 8th year of our Rollingstone Pineapple Festival. It just gets bigger and better; we know you all had buckets of fun from the positive comments on Facebook and hope you invite friends to our next year’s event. We have recovered from all the hard work and are now planning for our 2016 event and wish to give a big thank you to our Sponsors and the grower families. You again made your important contribution to the success of the day. Our volunteers also make an enormous effort and they deserve a gold star award, their tasks range from Community Centre gardens in tip top condition, the layout of the Village Green, the car parking, manning stands and food outlets for our community groups and the big effort to restore everything back to normal after the event, to everybody that helped we cannot thank you enough for your generous support, without all your efforts our Festival would not be the success it is. Kind Regards John Holliday

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. In this issue I shall not reveal any more of my childhood misdeeds or activities to give my three dear readers sufficient time to recover after my revelations last month. Instead, please read on to be informed of what has happened in our Club this month and, more importantly, what is about to occur. The end of month BBQ in August which I did not attend due to a family commitment in the freezing south from all reports dependant upon to whom you speak went well with a couple of minor issues which have been addressed by the Committee. Again we thank that Chief Chef, that king of the hot plate, that wizard of the kitchen who can turn a humble snag into a culinary delight, that..., that…oh that will do, we have pumped him up enough, that all round good guy Robert Pratt for doing a very fine job in feeding the emaciated multitudinous. Also thanks to Col and Gladys Pace for their very popular contribution of watermelon, fruit salad and ice cream. Our Monthly Fishing Competition winners were: Senior, Dan Dale (yet again) with a 5.28 kg Cobia, Junior, Brooke Palmer (yet again) with a .52 kg Grassy Sweetlip and to round off a family daily double, the Mystery Prize went to Rod Palmer. Congratulations to you all. The Recruiting Officer has again done his job this month without the use of thumb screws so we warmly welcome new member Wanda Cheeseman who hails from Bowen. Yes my three dear readers, we cast our recruiting net far and wide. Welcome Wanda, we hope you enjoy your new Club. Wanda is the Mother of Club Member Jeff Cheeseman who must have heard stories of her sons activities up here. Does this mean that Jeff will now behave himself at Club functions and outings? Nah, don’t think so! A huge thank you also goes out to those of you who have renewed your membership. Now, some really important stuff so take that old time dance record off the turntable for a couple of minutes and please pay attention. It might also be prudent to grab a scrap of paper and a writing stick to jot down a few very important details to add to that growing list in the throne room. The Committee has agreed on a Calendar of Social Events (Social Calendar) up to 31 st December. The first two events are on 3rd and 4th October for the AFL and NRL Grand Finals. As usual, we will have the big screen TV going and free hot dogs for members ($5.00 for visitors and guests). Then the next major function is a Family Weekend Away to Lucinda on 30 th, 31st October and 1st November. As always, it is important that those members who wish to go to Lucinda book and pay for their own accommodation now. Full details for the weekend were sent to all members via Email on 13 September, please read it! Please also note members that this a Closed Club Family Weekend Away so it will not, repeat, not include a Fishing Competition, but any catches may be weighed-in at Lucinda or taken to The Landing for weigh-in for inclusion of the Club Monthly Competition. The next extravaganza is the final Balgal Beach Markets for 2015 on 5 th December. The Committee is planning a special event on this day to celebrate the end of the market year and to recognize the opening of the Stinger Net Season. Free stall sites, yes Cyril, Free, Entertainment, Food, Santa, Fashion Parade and a lot more so come along to make this day a success. The Ladies from the Rollingstone State School P & C Association who are organizing the Beach Wear Fashion Parade would love to hear from any young teenagers who would like to participate. Apparently, the youngsters are keen to strut their stuff on the board walk but the older ones are a touch shy. If you are willing, please call Christine Ruston on 0458266687 or pop into the Rollingstone Police Station to see her. The Committee has agreed to stage another New Years Eve Party at The Landing on 31 st December and more details will be provided later. Lucky winner of the 4.5 litre bottle of Chevas Regal Scotch raffle, K. Stevens of Mystic Ave has not been sighted since the prize was delivered to his door. Word from a close associate is that Stevo is away working in the Mt Isa locality but we think he is holed up in his house with a huge contented and happy grin from ear to ear. Congratulations Stevo, commiserations Bunny. Thank you to our ticket sellers and a big thank you to the ticket buyers. Our next special raffle in October will be for a 4.5 litre bottle of Bundy……...Stay tuned! This month the privately covetous but publicly shunned and unwanted, unsavoury Tale of Woe Award goes to Rod Palmer. Rod recently took up a new position within the same international company only to discover he now works out of Gladstone and, the cruncher, after a decade with the company he also now has to actually work on Fridays – all day! Rod’s doting but reclusive and rather unsociable wife, old Granny Sloane, revealed through a small crack in their front door that the team of psychiatrists is making some progress. Which brings to mind a trivia question, what is a mob or a gaggle of shrinks called? Don’t forget our end on month BBQ on the last Friday of the month at The Landing commencing at 6.30 pm for socializing then between 6.45 and 7.00 pm our Chief Chef or any other bait layer hanging around deputized by the Chief Chef will fire up the BBQ. We need to start later than some would like because, believe it or not, some poor souls still work. The BBQ is free for members, guests of members or visitors are charged $10.00….STOP PRESS….Please note that the end of month BBQ for October will be a week earlier on Friday 23 October instead of 30 th October due to our Club’s jaunt to Lucinda on 30 th, 31st October and 1st November. All other details relative to our BBQs remain the same. Dickie’ Fishing News For those keen anglers who wait with bated breath each month for Dickie’s Fishing News I am afraid that I have some bad news. There is none. The crux of the matter is that Dickie will very shortly head overseas on a much needed holiday to an unspecified country. He is keeping very tight lipped about his destination but we have noted that he has been getting around humming to himself something about Siam. Anyway, he cannot extensively research and complete his article as he is packing his toothbrush and a pair of jocks and digging in his back yard looking for his buried stash to refill his already bulging wallet. Have a great time Dickie and come back P 26 with a mega size grin. …………………….Until next month………….Ninger

Congratulations to the winners and also to those who did not win for their efforts in the extremely dry weather we have had this year MARKETS The next Market Day will be on the Sunday of the October long weekend - the 4th. As always we could do with a few more stallholders - charge of $5 for a table is kept low as we realise it costs petrol to get here. Contact Lynn on 47737675 or 47708681 by Monday 28th September to book a table. ROAD WORKS Repairs were carried out on weekdays [morning to 14.00 on Saturdays] between 14th and 29th September on the bridge over Little Birthday Creek on the road to Lake Paluma. The road remained open during the entire period although there were occasional traffic delays while work was in progress.
Natures Notes - Roy Mackay
Brett & Mark wirth some of their August catch As I gaze out of the back window each morning I can appreciate the environment, the rainforest, my garden, the birds coming to my bird-table, etc..I can also reflect on my childhood in the western suburbs of Sydney when I had to go miles to see trees, lawns, the greenery surrounding the cemetery around a Baptist Church or the trees and lawns around the Sydney University. So, you in Rollingstone/Balgal and me in Paluma are fortunate in being able to look out upon the natural environment - where mans’ ancestors came from. Remember it was a Roman Catholic Monk in Austria who first discovered that we all come from genes passed on by both our parents who developed from the genes passed on by their parents - ad infinitum. As we study our ancestry or the ancestry of plants and animals, we have discovered that we all came from ancestors who came from the seas and the earth at least half a billion years ago. One such animal has changed very little since it left earth's waters to live on land and guess what? They occur in our rainforest and in your moist woodlands. It is called the Velvet Worm or Peripatus. There are about six species occurring in the Townsville electorate. They live in rotting logs or under rocks in moist soils. To see what you are looking for get David Attenborough's DVD called First Life and near the end of the film you will see one. Now, that is a project for children when on a school walk through the forest. Not long ago a boy at the Paluma Environment Education School found one in the nearby rainforest. The Velvet Worms are a perpetual wonder on our world. By now you have probably seen some reptiles come out for the warmer weather. Unless they are a danger to you in your house and surrounds leave them alone - and they will leave you alone. You will also notice some birds are already nesting as they are in Paluma. Have you noticed the flocking of the Peewees along the main road through Balgal? Enjoy your environment.
Merry We Meet! Hi Girls & Boys, I hope you are all getting ready for pool season. There has been a change since the September Rolly Rag. I said we would be starting on Friday October the 9th. Due to unforseen circumstances we won’t be starting till Friday, October 16. It’s only a week later but the positive is that the water will be another week warmer! We will be starting with Woggles. Don’t worry if you haven’t got one as we have spares. As this is the last Rolly Rag letter before we start I would like to invite any newcomers along. Don’t be shy. We are all shapes and sizes and we like to have a bit of fun and a lot of laughs in between exercises. Can I also remind everyone to please observe the rules and especially the speed limits in the park. The drill is to proceed to the boom gate inside the park, give a short bip on your horn and wait till the gate rises. If there is a car in front of you, wait till the car goes through and the gate goes down then bip and proceed through when the gate rises again. Follow the road down, then turn left to the pool area. I am always happy to take anyone along for their first time if they don’t know someone else to go with. Most people work out some car share arrangement. My phone number is 47707375. Don’t hesitate to call me with any enquiries. Cost is same as last year. Pay me at poolside. Starting at 9am Tuesdays and Fridays I look forward to seeing new faces and all our old friends back again for this season. …….Stay Healthy & Keep Fit…………... Babz. P 27
R.S.L. NEWS September has flown by and we are into the footy finals! Lots of discussion re: winners and losers at our Friday night gatherings at the club. Raffles, Goose Club, dinner and off home to watch the games. A number of our RSL members were in the Golf Club tipping competition and they did rather well when it came to payout time. Winner, Ashley Foster, a Family Associate. Second, Des Ward, a social member, but also our Flagman and Publicity Officer. Equal third, Dowie (a service member) and Reg Geritz, a social member. I think Dowie did okay, due to Reg making sure Dowie’s tips were in on time. Besides assisting with our Commemorative days and being great supporters of our raffles and Goose Club, these “gentlemen” are also great RSL and golf club supporters! Good luck to them, and let’s hope we can have a lady amongst the winners next year. Come on Val (3rd last year), Vonnie, Glor and myself! On a more serious RSL note, we have Remembrance Day coming up on Wednesday, November 11th. I do hope we can have a good attendance at our service at Balgal Beach, in this the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli. More news on that in the November Rag. We are holding a Quarterly Meeting on October 18th. Meeting begins at 10:30am at the Mystic Sands Golf Club. Members will receive written notification in the near future. Hopefully we will have a good attendance as we head towards the end of 2015. A reminder re: our Christmas Party on Saturday, 21st November 2015. Again written notification will be sent out to all members prior to the event. I have information re: The Bond University RSL Youth Development Program. Students currently completing Year 10 or 11 can enter and win a scholarship of up to $5,000. The money is to assist students towards advancement in the fields of academic, sporting or community achievements. Please contact me for details if you are interested or go online to www.RSLyouth.com.au or email enquiries to RSLyouth@bond.edu.au Each year we see a number of winners in the Townsville area so it is not just for Brisbane or SE Qld students. In October, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) conduct a Veteran’s Health Week. This involves a number of displays and activities in Townsville, and includes the Veteran’s Golf Day. This will be held on Monday, 12th October at Willows Golf Course. The competition will be 9 holes on the back nine of the main course. The president of the TPI, Pop Duscha, is calling for nominations from various clubs who may be interested in fielding a team. You don’t have to be a TPI, or former defence member to participate. You don’t have to be a recognized golfer or belong to a golf club. So perhaps some of the many clubs in our area may like to enter a team. Former test cricketer, Andrew Symonds is playing. The format is a 2 Person Ambrose. “No fund raising, just good company, good food and good fun!” ( quote from the TPI magazine) . There will be water and soft drinks on the course, as this is a health week promotion, but you can relax with a beer or two at the bar afterwards and a healthy gourmet lunch (meats, prawns and salads) is included in the price. Cost to TPI members and spouses is $10 and $25 to guests. This covers your game fee and lunch. Great value for a morning of golf. Lots of prizes too! Golf buggies and clubs will be available for hire. Nominations must be in by 1700 on Wednesday, 7th October. Please call or see me for further details. Friday nights are starting to slow a little, as the “grey nomads” have headed off. However, this gives you a better opportunity to win a raffle or the Goose Club prizes and Jackpot. This currently is around $300, so is worthwhile winning as Christmas approaches. That’s it for October and I hope all RSL members are keeping happy and healthy. Our Pam Mac has recovered from her illness which laid her low in Cairns in August and it was good to see Phil R back on his feet and assisting Lions at the Pineapple Festival. Take Care………. Cheers, Rhonda C.

Make sure your properties are cleared , gutters empty and grass is kept short at this time. Its dry and we have already had some concerning fires. Luckily we have an amazing team who help keep our community as safe as possible BUT it all depends on the homeowner to be responsible!
