Letter to the Editor Last week we had some devastating and heartbreaking news.

Our beautiful Grandson passed away as a result of SIDS. I'm sure many of you would either know or have heard of someone that has been affected by this terrible condition.

My son and daughter-in-law are trying to raise awareness and funds to prevent families from suffering their same heartbreak in the future.

Our son Peter grew up in Balgal and went to Rollingstone school.

Madonna and Bryan Reinke.

This is their story:

Our baby Joshua Reinke was born on May 4th at just 31 weeks. He spent 5 weeks of his life in hospital and then we were able to take him home for 7 of the most precious days of our lives. Joshua sadly passed away on the 18th June 2017 surrounded by love in his parents arms.

RIP our perfect little baby - we will love you forever.

We've created this page because we want to make a difference. We are inspired by the work of SIDS and Kids and wanted to support them by raising money as part of our participation in Red Nose Day 2017. Please help us make a difference and help us honour Joshua's life by donating. We want Joshua's loss to have meaning in this life and for our fundraising to both bring about a cure but also help other families that face these situations."

Hello Rollingstone District, I’m making a guest appearance in the Coppers Log this month while Sgt Gough is on Long Service Leave. I hope you have all been keeping well in this magnificent weather…. If only I could spend more time in it fishing!

I would like to touch on a serious issue for a moment. Ice or methyl amphetamine use in our community. The use of Ice nationwide has increased to epidemic proportions and our small community does not remain untouched by this very serious issue. In fact 2016 statistics reveal that the use of ice among those who live in regional areas is significantly higher than those who reside in the city. Between 2010 to 2016 there has been a 36% increase in the number of reported ice users.

Ice users exhibit violent, erratic and paranoid behaviour, leading to psychosis. Ice users often act out in an aggressive and violent manner. More often than not it is the ice user’s family and children, others in the community and the emergency services who are on the receiving end of the drug fuelled violence. This violent behaviour often occurs while the user is under the influence and also when they are “coming down” and looking for their next “hit”. Moreover drug dealers (of all kinds) who are owed debts exhibit violence toward those who owe, including their children and families. What does this mean for you?

When drugs of all kinds start to filter into a community police see a marked increase in offences such as domestic violence, break and enters, stealing of motor vehicles and violent assaults. The victims of these offences are most often YOU, the innocent community member going about your daily business. Basically if we clean up the drugs = we see a decrease in crime.

ALL of us have a responsibility to keep our children and families safe and keep our community a safe and friendly neighbourhood in which to play and live. Individually you are the eyes and ears of police and each person represents an opportunity to keep crime out of our wonderful community. If you see, hear or smell anything suspicious I urge you to contact Policelink 131 444 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersqld.com.au and report what you have observed. It may be something small, you may not even be sure what you saw, but if your gut is telling you something is not right then I strongly encourage you to report it.

Can they find out it was me? NO - You can remain completely anonymous if you wish. If you do provide your details (Police may have some clarification questions when investigating) they are protected by section 119 of the Drugs Misuse Act in that any person or police officer who discloses your details are guilty of a crime and liable to 5 years imprisonment. I would encourage anyone who makes a report to keep it private.

Moving onto hoons. We have had some reports of some hooning around Balgal Beach and the Bruce Highway. Again we have families with small children walking and riding their bikes along the roads in the afternoon and our streets are no place for hoons (this is particularly relevant given the school holiday period). Put simply I will NOT accept hoons on our streets. If you see any vehicles that you believe to be hooning, travelling at high speed, doing burnouts etc I again urge you to take down the registration and description of the vehicle and driver if possible and contact the police station, Policelink, or Crimestoppers as above so that I can follow up with these individuals. The QLD government not long ago cracked down heavily on hooning and now hoons can expect to have their vehicle’s immobilised, impounded or forfeited for hooning offences. I have no issue whatsoever in keeping these irresponsible people and their vehicles off our streets.

So in summing up my message to the community this month is empowerment! I want you all to feel empowered to assist us in protecting our community from all forms of crime. Crimes are rarely committed under the nose of even the most diligent police officer and we need your help in identifying the individuals that simply do not belong in this community. Help us, help you!

My message to individuals who do intend on continuing this behaviour: Our small community does not afford offenders the anonymity that larger centres do – everyone knows someone who knows something and the community is watching.

Thank you to everyone who put their crafty talents to the test making a Dream Catcher with Maree Blackman of Harmony by the Sea (Bluewater). Thank you, Maree for being so accommodating while organising this activity and for your time conducting the lessons. There are so many talented people both young and young at heart, is this community. We enjoy putting together these activities, getting everyone involved and creating. Being creative is as good for the soul as having a jaw shattering belly laugh, a big soppy, sloppy nose dripping cry or physical activity. The natural body chemicals released at these times create our natural highs (and they are free).

Places are still available for our second activity – Origami Workshop for kids and History of Origami for the adults. Thursday 6 July with the Adults workshop being held between 2 & 3pm and the children’s session starting at 3.15 to 4.30pm.

Have a look above for the activities at the hall. Yet again there is something going on each week not including our regular activities.

The Car Boot sale was a great success with approximately 15 sellers bringing along their gear. A good steady stream of people attended with the carpark full at one stage. Thanks to the Lions for providing their famous Sausage Sizzle and to Mon for her wonderful coffees.

It was a good day, we will be organising another Car Boot for later in the year.

As the end of the Financial Year approaches, the RaDCA Management Committee will be calling for new members, give it some thought – do you have something to offer the community? Do you have skills that are required to assist with the running of the Community Centre and the associated events and activities provided by the Community Centre?

Due to scheduled maintenance, the Mobile Library will not be at Rollingstone on Wednesday 5 July. The Library girls apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

The Gardening Group are meeting on Thursday 13 July at 7pm at the Community Centre, to plan more activities and so everyone can have input. There are some wonderful ideas being put into the hat, they just need to be scheduled and organised. To make the evening a little more interesting bring along some plants, seedlings, cuttings that you would like to give away or swap. There are some amazing plants out there – if you have any oddities you want to show off please bring them along or if they are too big bring some photos even on your phones would do.

The Art Competition/ Expo is only around the corner – Please let your friends know – What interesting creations can be made using the Humble Pineapple as the subject/ Theme.

Narelle is ready and waiting to assist with One on One Computer tutoring on Tuesdays, between 9.30am and 11.30am. We have two bookings for 4 July, but can squeeze in a third if necessary. Call to make a booking.

Patrick and Kellie from Mackey Wales Law, presented their ADH, EPA and wills information 13 June, the feedback forms state that this was a very informative and interesting workshop, the information was presented in a manner that the attendees would absorb and comprehend. Thank you, Patrick and Kellie your time and expertise is very much appreciated.

We had a good crowd who enjoyed an afternoon of music from The Gottani Sisters, Anita and Noelene Smith, Judyana and Tony and Friends Band, (Cheryl, Justin, Judyana and Tony), Keith Bagley, Peter Moxon, Peter Kleehammer, Chrissie, Joyce Stewart and Ben Hobson, and Lance and the Northern Beaches High School for the Equipment. Thanks to The Lions for the well-stocked bar and the Seniors for the yummy afternoon snacks. Wonderful effort Everyone.

Nevis and Graham Foster have welcomed twin great-grandsons into their family. Kane & Kobi already have twin big sisters, Zoe and Mia, who are now going on 3. How’s that for family planning, and we wonder what the odds are of this occurring?

Our Treasurer, Lynne Prytherch, was at Castletown recently when she ran into Helen Dyer and her carer. Helen is now w/chair-bound but otherwise seems to be doing well, and she now lives at (Ozcare) Villa Vincent. She recognised Lynnie and they had a lovely catchup chat.

Madonna & Brian Reinke lost their precious little grandson, Joshua, to SIDS. And we are lost for words, but please know you are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

We lost John Finn during June. At least, he’s no longer suffering, having been so ill for so long. Our thoughts and prayers are with Elaine and Luke. Vale John.

And we’ve also heard that Ray Campbell isn’t well at all and is in hospital.



   

WOW!! Just WOW!!! What an afternoon of entertainment at the Rollingstone Community Association’s “Country Music” Concert. So much talent – how fortunate are we? Special thanks to Judy & Bob Holt for their wonderful organisation; to the Rollingstone Seniors and the Rollingstone Lions for supplying the food and drinks; to all the performers who gave freely of their time and talent for us all to enjoy; to our Centre Manager, Chris, who brings it all together and keeps it so; and to all those who turned up to enjoy what was on offer. There would have been 150 people in attendance who got to hear the Gottani Sisters, Charlie’s Angels, Keith Bagley, and so many other talented locals. Thank you all...............you’re all very, very special people.

And what a way to spend several wonderfully enjoyable hours. We’ll probably do another one late in the year.

Another worthwhile couple of hours was our Legal Presentation during June. There were 25 in attendance and Patrick Sutton and Kellie Hopkins from Mackey Wales Law were able to provide lots of beneficial information. Most well-received Our Car Boot Sale was held in perfect weather and the backdrop of our maturing trees provided a great place to hold it. Our thanks to Dan and Mon and the Lions for providing food and drinks. We had a goodly number of vendors and the community reception was also pleasing. It seems to have been a successful, friendly and fruitful morning for all involved.

Have you tried the Pies at our local BP servo? If you haven’t, you ought to do yourself a favour and do so – but get there early. They quite honestly do go out of the door rather rapidly although there’re always Sausage Rolls if you miss out on the Pies. The Pies really are just THE BEST!!

HEALTH TOPIC OF THE MONTH SAND FLY (MIDGES) FACTS

Commonly known as ‘Sand Flies’. Biting Midges are small flies. Small and hard to see.

People are often bitten without realising. Itching may commence immediately after bite, but often not for some hours later or next day.

Reactions to bites may last for several days to weeks. If you experience discomfort from the bites of midges seek medical attention to help relieve symptoms. Midges are most likely to be encountered around tidal zones, lagoons, estuaries and mangrove swamps. Most active around dusk and dawn. Adult flight activity increases shortly after high and spring tides. Activity decreases as wind increases The department of Medical Entomology at Sydney University states that – “There are no known efficient methods of controlling biting midges” (Sand Flies) and “Irritation associated with bites may be alleviated with anti-pruritic preparations, but severe reactions may require medical treatment with antihistamines” Where appropriate try to wear long sleeves and long pants, light coloured and loose fitting clothes especially around dusk and in areas of high midge populations. Use insect repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions closely.

DEET (Diethyltoluamide, N,N-diethyl-3-methlbenzamide) remains the gold standard of currently available insect repellents. It’s a broad spectrum agent that is effective against mosquitoes, biting flies, fleas and ticks. It was developed in 1946 following the experience of American soldiers involved in jungle warfare and was again used in the Vietnam War. In higher risk areas (eg areas where malaria, Ross River Virus, Barmah Forest Virus and Dengue fever occur) Insect repellents with 15-30 per cent Deet should be used.

Natural repellents include: Always follow directions of manufacturer when applying insect Eucalyptus oil repellent. Guidelines for safe use of insect repellent are: Tea tree oil Read entire label before use Vicks vapour rub and many more home remedies.

Roll on preparations are preferable to sprays Try what natural remedy works best for you. What works Apply sparingly (lightly) to exposed skin for one person may not work for the next person Do not use on cuts, wounds or irritated skin Do not apply to areas around the eyes and mouth If you experience discomfort from the bites of midges seek Do not apply to lips, hands or fingers of young children medical attention to help relieve symptoms.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome, Yes, Cyril and my three dear readers, we are still far from Paradise but this time we are in the Nation's Capital, Canberra. I know there must be worse places in the world to be but to be honest I cannot think of one at the moment. The good news is that by the time this edition of the Fine Family Magazine bounces off your roof or patio into the dog's dish we will be heading north again thank goodness.

During my extended absence, Graham Milliken, Dan Dale and Dickie have written the article on my behalf therefore keeping a certain Editor off my back. I thank them for their excellent articles and me thinks perhaps, maybe I may be able to hand the whole shooting match over to them. Now, wouldn't that be good.

We may be far from Paradise at the moment but we have heard that Club Members Mick and Lisa McMahon have taken over the Mystic Sands Resort. We wish them all the very best in their new venture.

G’day Balgal and surrounds, A lot of you have probably heard about a fishing competition called the “Fisherman’s Landing $500 Fish”. Unfortunately by the time I got things organised I was too late to advertise it in last month’s Rolly Rag and by the time you read this it will be over. I did my best to advertise it around the place so hopefully a few of you found the time to compete. Keep an eye out here next month for the results.

Over the past month I haven’t had the time to throw a line in but I have been talking to a few of the tourists visiting and fishing in the area. One common question I was asked was “How do we know where we can and can’t fish?” For those of you who are visiting or new to the area, just go into any of the Bait and Tackle shops in town and get a free Zoning Map. The one that covers our area is Map 7. It’s a pretty good map and includes heaps of useful info as well. Another thing to familiarise yourself with is the species bag and size limits and total bag limit for coral reef fin fish. All information regarding this can be found at www.daf.qld.gov.au. In the near future Queensland will be employing another 20 Fisheries officers and 3 of them will be based in Townsville. This will probably mean a few more visits to our area. Anyway, until next month, fish safe.

Cheers Dan…...Club Fishing Co-ordinator This month's Club barbecue was held on Friday 26th May. Quite well attended with around 50 people in attendance had a good night. Vice President Graham officiated in the absence of President Di and our Secretary Neil. Thanks to Bruce and Lyn Woolard, Therese Milliken, Lurleen Sharp, Geoff and Vicki Fischer for helping to set up. And of course Dickie who had half the gear out before anyone got there. Col paces burgers were again a hit, disappearing in no time. Col also brought along a good whole rump for a raffle - you never guess who won it, Colin Pace. I suggested to Col that we were all going round afterwards for another barby. He reckoned he was going home to bed, so I told him just to leave the rump, barbecue and gas bottle out and we'd look after the rest! Also again thanks to chef extraordinaire, Rob Pratt, with his usual delights, plus a stew that he brought along from some leftovers. A good feed and a good night.

MARKETS - held Saturday 3rd June Not a bad day - 10 stallholders in attendance. Crowd didn't seem to be all that big, and feedback I got from some stallholders was that they didn't have a lot of customers, but they spent up well. The breakfast BBQ was cooked by our latest cordon bleu chef, Bruce Woolard, with the workers selling the produce being Lyn Woolard and Vicki Fischer. Vice President Graham was there to help, but didn't do anything around the barby, just general dogs body racing around getting things as needed, collecting the fees from stallholders, selling raffle tickets etc. We might have to sack our old chef and keep Bruce on - sales were up a bit, and basically sold out of most things - he must be a better cook! We did have a couple of apologies from helpers for the day - Lurleen and Therese who were both running around after Grandkids. Not a real lot of other news this month. It has been quiet around the place with Neil and Di away (the noisy pair!). Barry Mugeli is back in town for a couple of weeks so we welcome him back. That's about it I think……...Regards Graham...President of Vice Dickies Fishing News Giday Folks, another month gone by and the weather has not been very kind for the boaties and most fishing restricted to the creeks. Taylors beach estuary has been producing some good winter Whiting and Bream with the best baits being Yabbies if you can get them or peeled prawns, Good catches of crabs being reported from Crystal and Ollera Creeks with Cattle creek producing some excellent Barra's and blue swimmers. The doggie Mackerel have arrived on the inner shoals especially out from the microwave tower just north of Rollingstone Creek. Also the reports have indicated good size spotted and Spanish Mackerel schooling with the Doggie Macks and taking Floating Pilchards. Lots of Nannygai being landed out from Mystic Sands and the Paluma shoals but most seem to be around the 38 cm mark and just undersized, however the big schools of Nannygai seem to dominate the area making it difficult to land other species, the powers that be should lower the size length to 36cm however I can’t see that happening anytime soon. A pod of Whales were spotted out to sea of Rollingstone Creek mouth during the week and put on a display for an hour out the front of the beach along with a pod of dolphins. No reports from out wide of the islands due to the weather however good Queen fish and Spanish Mackerel being boated on the Paluma shoals and around Rattlesnake and Herald islands. The latest secret bait is to walk the front beach at low tides looking out from what seems to be Yabbie holes but when pumped with a Yabbie pump contain Mantis Prawns which are one of the best baits going evidently guaranteed to catch a fish with every prawn. Be careful when handling them as the can nip.

Well that’s it for this month—tight lines and safe boating. Remember to lodge a trip sheet with either Ingham or Townsville coast guards before going out to sea or at least tell someone where you are going. Regards Dickie.

R.S.L.NEWS

As predicted in the June article, we held a QGM on Sunday, 11th June. The QGM went a little longer than expected but that was due to our having three guests attend. Each guest addressed an issue relating to their role as a member of the QLD RSL Board. The guests were: Roy Cunneen, a Board member involved with legislation; Bill Whitburn, President of Townsville RSL and President of North Qld District, who represents North Qld on the QLD Board, and Stewart Cameron, President of RSL QLD. Their talks were interesting and assured our members that QLD RSL was in a strong position financially, where as other states were having difficulties. Board members were diligent in keeping records to ensure they were using money provided to cover out of pocket expenses appropriately.

Stewart explained to us what had happened in NSW and the new President there realised he and his committee had a lot of work to do to recover the image of the RSL in NSW. It was also noted that Rollingstone RSL had received approval from North QLD District to form a Citizens Auxiliary. Ewan is looking at establishing this in July. Whilst Citizens Auxiliary membership is designed for those who have not served in the forces, social membership will still be available.

Thanks to Sam who stepped in to provide snacks for us following the meeting. He had to raid the diminishing freezers but did a great job.

As noted in last month’s issue, Rollingstone RSL will conduct a service at the Memorial on Friday the 18th August to commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day. More news in the August Rolly Rag. It has been an interesting time at the golf club and it is now widely known that the new owners are Lisa and Mick McMahon. Good on them. They are really taking on a massive challenge and the RSL and the community wish them the very best for the future development of the club and the course. They have a positive, enthusiastic attitude and a desire to see the place develop into a friendly, welcoming club where all, locals and visitors, can come and enjoy the facilities.

The two men working on behalf of the receivers over the past few weeks have been most interesting to talk to. Sam and Mitch are both involved with farming, amongst other things. Mitch, however, explained to me that when things weren’t the best in the dairying industry, he studied finance, and consequently got the position with PPB Advisory. Hopefully all will go well and the changeover occurs on the 29th June. Sam can get back to the snow and Mitch to Cowra.

Both Lisa and Mick have relatives who have served and they are quite happy for the Rollingstone RSL to continue to use the golf club as our home base. This is certainly pleasing to hear. We could relocate but I must admit one of the highlights of the golf club is the view to the mountains and the comraderie that occurs on Friday nights. There will be changes, as expected, but I’m sure that Mick and Lisa will make them positive and in the best interests of all patrons.

A big thank you to the following who are there to help with the raffles on Friday nights. Faye is our usual back–up lady, to whom I turn to when someone is unavailable, as well as doing her rostered nights. Megan, Ken, Dowie, Reg, Linda, Dave, Annie and Doug have all taken their turn or made up for their night when unavailable. Our new member Vince has stepped in and assisted as well as doing his rostered night and we had the return of Robyn, and Glor assisted with one raffle for old time’s sake. The dynamic duo from a couple of years ago! Of course the night doesn’t run without the assistance of barrel girl Cathy, or sometimes Jodie, and the scribes who record the winners. Thanks Rhonda L and Jane and any others whom I may have missed. Thank you to all of those members.

Your assistance is much appreciated. We also need to thank those who purchase tickets or numbers; some regularly and others when convenient. Thank you to those people for your support. I am about to do a new roster so if you would like to meet new people, join in with a fun group, please see me and I will include you on the roster beginning mid -July.

Please remember if you know of an RSL member who is hospitalised or needs assistance you can call Ewan or myself and we will try to assist if possible.

Finally, hope to see you on a Friday night for the raffles and Goose Club. Great things to look forward to but of course it all takes time and effort so give Lisa and Mick time to settle in and get used to running a golf club. Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G’Day All, Having had to hold our BBQ a week later than normal due to another event being booked at the hall on the same day, resulted in fewer members being able to attend. We did, however, have some visitors who were made very welcome and joined in all the fun.

We played team golf putting with everyone enjoying the game. Always lots of fun, laughter, and advice from the side line.

Team three won and were applauded for their excellent score. WELL DONE ALL. Our LOUNDS FRESH SEAFOOD RAFFLE was won by Juanita Carter - lucky girl - Enjoy We must thank the cooks for a delicious dinner and the special ladies who constantly bring along such lovely desserts, just as well they are all diet friendly. HA HA. Can’t resist. Gordy does the best smoked chicken wings. Good on ya Gordy. WE LOVE ‘EM. A group of us are going up to the Hervey Range Tea Rooms for brunch on Sunday 25 th June. It will be lots of fun. We hope it is not too cold!!!

Again it was a privilege to attend this event and see the most deserving people get the awards

MUTARNEE STATE SCHOOL Our school enjoyed a three-day camp at Lake Tinaroo with the students and staff from Mount Fox. The student activities included fishing, bush skills, kayaking, climbing and catapult making as well as developing friendships, learning to be independent and learning how to eat (there was no shortage of food provided!).

Following the staffing changes through this term and the many interruptions to learning, our students were still completing assessment tasks on the last day of term. This has resulted in report cards not being able to be issued until the start of next term.

Our P & C was successful in gaining a grant to replace part of our playground. This will take shape over term 3 as the old one is removed and the new one built.

Looking forward to everyone being back at school on Monday 10 July.

Rollingstone SES The last couple of months have been busy with lots of training for the new recruits with three qualified for height safety, three completed PIARO course, three also did their First Aid. There was a search and rescue up at Paluma range for a missing person. When we are not out on deployment we are always refining our skills or learning new ones.

SES is always looking for new recruits. If you are interested in joining your local SES come along to training on Monday nights at our shed, which is behind the Community Centre, 44 Community Crescent, Rollingstone from 7pm..

Unfortunately due to personal reasons this will be my last contribution to our local rag as I've resigned from our local SES Stay safe out there everyone, it's been good chatting to you all every month. Thank you for reading my words.

Welcome to July everyone. Only 25 weeks until Christmas! Where has the last 6 months gone?

Our Community Garage and Car Boot Sale was another success. Thank you to all those who donated items to sell. Very much appreciated. Rudi, Noel & Debbie did a great job cooking and selling out of food, leaving everyone happy. There were a lot of bargains at the sale, which were snapped up very quickly. Margie and Helene did a wonderful job selling lots of items. Other stall holders said they were happy with their sales for the day. Money raised will go towards the kids Christmas Party for 2017.

The “Winter Raffle” tickets are selling well and we managed to sell a lot at the Garage Sale. The lucky winners will be drawn on Saturday 29th July 4pm. 1st Prize: 4 Burner hooded BBQ. 2nd Prize: 1 Litre Bundy Rum. 3rd Prize: $20 Voucher. 4th Prize: Hot Chocolate Gift Pack. There is also 5th, 6th & 7th prizes in the raffle. Good luck everyone.

A big thank you has to go to Rudi for helping Eddie Rouse rake up in the park recently. Eddie likes to keep the park clean & tidy and appreciates any help with raking or picking up leaves, so if you would like to help please go and talk to Eddie. He would be very happy.

Congratulations to young Jace Jennings and his team for winning the Laurie Spina Shield for North Devils Gold U11’s Rugby League.

Jace scored a try along with other team mates to get a convincing win 20-0 against Springfield Panthers at the 1300 Smiles Stadium.

What an amazing experience for Jace and his team mates. Congratulations Jace and proud parents Chris & Chloe, sister Caitlyn and little brother Jesse.

From my recent visits to Balgal I have noticed a rise in the number of Fork-tailed and Whistling Kites. This has not affected the numbers of Peewees, Magpies or other birds I notice there.

You will have noticed that many migrant birds, such as the Forest Kingfisher have gone North. At the same time other species have come up from South such as King Parrots.

Even though I know most of the wildlife around Paluma where I live, It came as a surprise to read (Wildlife Matters, Winter, 2017) that Sharman's Rock Wallaby, which I often see in Taravale Station and surrounding hill country, is probably the rarest mammal in Australia.

You have reptile collectors in your area and I am sure they would be able to tell you the rarest species in the Rollingstone-Balgal and surrounding areas. Ask them.

Koalas are not found in your area, I believe, but are found West of Paluma and south. We are at the northern tip of their distribution.

They are not found in the Rollingstone-Balgal area but occur in the south of Townsville.

Just as we are having more land cleared for crops around Australia, we need at the same time more National Parks and Special Reserves to protect our flora and fauna species from extinction

ANNUAL PALUMA PUSH The annual Paluma Push conducted by Rockwheelers Mountain Bike Club assisted by Waterfall Creek ( Hidden Valley) and Paluma Rural Fire Brigades will take place on Sunday 23 July 2017 starting at 8.45 am.at Paluma.

One of the best vantage points for viewing the early stages of the race ,when every rider looks a winner , is on the Paluma side of the Hussey Road intersection ,1.4 Kms west of Paluma Village.

There is plenty of hassle free parking and plenty of room for good photographs/ selfies as well as a quick getaway to Hidden Valley when the race field departs the Paluma- Hussey Road section.

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi there everyone, I am very pleased to let you all know that Keith Poulter will be the new principal at our lovely school. Some of you may remember Keith, he was the acting principal at Mutarnee State School, before heading to Hamilton Island and then to Cannonvale State Schools.

It has certainly made it just a little bit easier to leave knowing that Keith will be here working with you. Keith will be visiting us on Thursday and Friday morning to meet with all of the staff and students. I know that you will all make him feel very welcome. I have spent the last couple of weeks reflecting on my time here at this very special place. I have certainly made many life-long friends. If you want to be great, surround yourself with great people. I certainly have the opportunity to surround myself with great people, and the team that I have worked with at Rollingstone have been second to none. Each staff member at this school comes with a huge amount of expertise, a massive amount of caring, a generous giver of their time, a sharer of their knowledge. Our Rolly R’s say ‘Respect yourself, respect others and be responsible’, the staff at this school embody our school rules, they consistently talk respect and responsibility, but they also walk it, and they walk it together. Margaret Meade (a cultural anthropologist) once said, “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has”. I can only hope that in some small way, I have contributed positively to this ‘group’ at Rollingstone. There are many things that I am particularly proud of during my time here: 

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc Hello Rollingstone, This month at our annual changeover dinner we celebrated our tenth year in Service, and 100 years of Lions International.

Members, partners and friends from the Community had a great night, the food was superb, prepared by Faye Thomson and served by members of the Seniors. Thank you very much to those tireless workers who made the night a great success. A special thanks to Judyana for providing the beautiful music. Lions International highest award “THE MELVILLE JONES FELLOWSHIP AWARD” went to John Holliday for his tireless work and dedication to Lions and our community. Well done John.

We have been asked by the Golf Club Management to cook on Friday and Tuesday nights for the members and guests. This is until such time as they obtain a cook. Last Tuesday night we catered for the farewell dinner of the much loved Principal, Kasey Constantine.

She has done a marvellous job at our local Rolly School and will be sadly missed by the kiddies and parents alike. We hope that her new post on Magnetic Island as Principal of Maggie School gives her as much joy and pleasure as this post has. Good luck in the future Kasey.

We hope to start the construction of our toilet block, which will be attached at the end of the Lions Den, very shortly. We have a few hiccups with Council but they will be ironed out and brick and mortar will commence. This will be an asset to the Club and I understand that members wish it to be named “Dowies Dunny”.

Progress has started in full swing for the upcoming Pineapple Festival. In previous years parking has been a major problem. This year, thanks to the generosity of Mr Warren Harvey of Balgal Beach Road, who has kindly donated the use of a large paddock that adjoins Pace Park. This land has been burnt off and will be graded to form a large parking area. There will be Parking Attendants on hand and it will be suitably marked out as a large car park. It will only be a distance of approximately 100 metres to walk into the festival after parking. I would like to thank Raymond Pace and his team of firies for the burn off and the Pace family for taking on the task to prepare the car park. I wonder where we would be without the generosity of the Pace family.

Rollingstone & District Seniors The weather this time of year is just so wonderful, shows us the true meaning of paradise. If others are like me, they will be out in the yard trying to sort out the wilderness that grew over the hot months.

I hear that the dynamic duo are heading over the ditch for a long awaited holiday/family visit. We all wish Judyana and Bob the most fantastic time but don’t forget to return to us.

To everyone else who has headed off or are gearing up to go, have a wonderful safe time, wishing you all the very best.

Then we had the poor long suffering couple who have been married for 55 years, ouch that takes some beating in this day and age when it is off with the old and on with the new. I always thought it better the devil you know. Congrats you pair anyway, it is lovely to see.

I, ahem, have just returned from China and I might add it was just fabulous. They do not have” seniors”, they have “experienced” people and I think that is just lovely. Both Pam and I were helped whenever needed and seats were relinquished for us, so nice. We were treated with the utmost respect, so different from here.

The Mini Golf day has had to change due to school holidays etc and will now be on the 11th. Please mark that down.

The Tribute to Banjo Patterson is full steam ahead so please book tickets before they run out. Date JULY 15th. The menu and entertainment is all finalized so all you need to do is turn up for another great night. The Lions will have the bar open to quench your thirst. Tickets available from Rhonda on 957 $25 pp.

Civic theatre presents Danny Elliott in Concert 17-18th October, I hear he is very popular so this will be another fine outing.

The Bingo jackpot went off last month to a charming local so that was great news. Do feel free to come along, we have a good time and the pace suits us all.

The Evening Bowls is another fun time, those who go along have a wow of a time so come along and learn the great skill of carpet bowling from the experts (so called). It is not a late night. We welcome all so come along and join in the fun.

We will start making plans for the pineapple festival again, soon.

The seniors are having a stall, so start potting those plants and making the jams and chutneys. Closer to time we will remind you about the cakes and biscuits. Everyone loves the home cooking.

RADCA will be manning the kitchen again this year so any help in there will be greatly appreciated, if more volunteer then a roster can be organized giving people free time to enjoy the day outside.

Ok for someone who could not think of anything I think I have done well, thanks for putting up with my waffle, until next rag. Be good and have FUN…

ROLLINGSTONE LIONS CLUB CELEBRATES 10 YEARS On Saturday 3 June, I attended the annual installation dinner for the Rollingstone & District Lions Club. This was the 10th installation ceremony since the club was re-established in 2007, which I also attended. The club is going from strength to strength because of its dedicated and motivated members, who make a great contribution to the local community in the Rollingstone district.

I'm very proud to be associated with this hard working local service club. Congratulations and good luck.

This year is the 100th year since Lions was established in the United States in 1917.

LNP TO SUPPORT FRONTLINE EMERGENCY WORKERS The LNP has recently announced a strong policy of imposing a mandatory minimum gaol sentence on anyone convicted of a serious assault on a police officer, an ambulance officer, or a firefighter in Queensland. This policy is about standing up for our dedicated emergency service workers on the frontline who do a tough job protecting our local communities.

It is unacceptable for them to be assaulted while doing their duty. It is disgraceful that these emergency service workers have to increasingly put up with the threat of being assaulted while they go about protecting the lives and property of Queenslanders. The LNP won’t put up with that and will make this change. These thugs must take responsibility for their behaviour.

LNP FAMILY CAR REGO PLEDGE For two years in a row, the Palaszczuk Government has increased family car registration by 3.5 per cent more than twice the inflation rate. The Palaszczuk Government’s rego slug means a four-cylinder family car now costs over $720 to register – an increase of $55 in just two years!

The LNP has a strong track record of delivering cost of living relief for Queensland motorists. In 2012, the former LNP Government froze rego on the family car for the three years we were in office, as part of our plan to keep the cost of living for Queensland families under control.

The LNP is committed to putting an end to Labor’s unfair cost hikes by once again freezing family car registration for three years if we win the next state election.

Our rego freeze guarantee is fair on Queensland motorists, in contrast to the price hikes under the Palaszczuk Government
